During galena flotation of Rosh Pinah milled material, metal ions and salts contents of various water resources (deionized, simulated circulated, lead concentrate thickener, lead tailing thickener and borehole) influenced mineral recoveries, upgrade ratios, selectivities, froth stability and flotation kinetics. The various water resources employed during galena flotation caused activation, depression or selectivity effects on minerals due to the presence of different ions in solution. Metal ions in these water resources were adsorbed by the ore, whilst ions associated with gangue minerals (dolomite and quartz) were released into the flotation pulp. Lead concentrate thickener water caused depression of sphalerite and pyrite, increased fast floating fractions for silver, copper minerals, sphalerite and quartz (unwanted), and improved slow floating rate selectivity against pyrite and sphalerite. Lead tailing thickener water enhanced sphalerite recovery during galena flotation (unwanted), and increased fast floating fractions of pyrite. Western borehole water did not affect galena recovery, but sphalerite and pyrite recoveries were unacceptably too high. Ions from copper, lead, and zinc salts tended to release high amounts of ions, such as calcium, magnesium, silicon, and manganese from gangue minerals (dolomite and quartz) during milling. During galena flotation, lead ions depressed sphalerite, pyrite and dolomite at a lead concentration of 400 ppm, but sphalerite was activated at a concentration of 800 ppm. Sphalerite was activated with copper ions (89% recovery, 2.09 upgrade ratio) and depressed with zinc ions (maximum recovery of 25%). This corresponds with findings in previous investigations. Dolomite and quartz were slightly activated with zinc ions. No evidence was found that lead and copper ions activated any gangue minerals during galena flotation. The economical analyses of different Chuquicamata open pit mine planning scenarios, indicate that the pit closure should occur at latest in the year of 2017. However, about 60,000 m of drill holes have demonstrated that below the pit bottom there is a potential of 2.3 billion tons of ore. Hence, Division Codelco Norte developed the scoping engineering for a large underground panel caving operation, similar to El Teniente mine. This project considers the exploitation of a 2500 m 300 m footprint, with three 250 m lifts. The plan considers to initiate the construction in the year 2009, to begin the production in the year 2015 and achieve a production rate of 45 million tons per year in the year 2021. A large-scale transition from open pit to underground mining like this one presents three main challenges: (1) to include the geotechnical aspects relevant for mine design and mine planning, (2) to define the proper surface and underground infrastructure, and (3) to fulfil the project deadlines and to achieve the production targets. This paper summarizes this transition project and discusses these three main challenges.

Eutectic freeze crystallization (EFC) is a novel technique for the recovery of pure salt and pure water from hypersaline waste brines. It is therefore a promising technology for the treatment of industrial waste waters. The impurities caused by crystallizing salt out of multi-component brines by EFC have not yet been investigated, however. To these ends, the selenium impurity found in sodium sulphate, produced from the waste brine of a platinum operation, was investigated. It was believed that the similarity between sulphate and selenate ions allowed isomorphous substitution of selenate ions into the sodium sulphate crystals, which was the likely cause of impurity uptake. It was found that the presence of sodium chloride in the industrial brine promotes the uptake of selenium, while ionic strength of the brine and mass deposition rate of sodium sulphate did not have a significant effect on the selenium uptake. Isomorphous substitution is predicted to be the most significant mechanism by which all impurities will be taken up when applying EFC to other industrial waste brines.

Using chip sample data and spatial structure parameters from a large mined-out section of a South African gold mine the advantages to be gained from a regular underground borehole drilling programme have been investigated for short- and medium- to long-term planning based on block valuations. The results have been compared with the current position, which relies invariably on the extrapolation of limited peripheral sampling data from raises, gullies or stope faces. Some preliminary work has also been done regarding the implications of such underground drilling on costs used for the present pay limit calculations. The results of the study, though preliminary, show that the net advantage of advance regular underground drilling could be substantial and that a more intensive follow-up research is warranted.

Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and shear strength parameters(cohesion and angle of internal friction, Cand F) of rocks are important parameters needed for various engineering projects such as tunnelling and slope stability. However, direct determination of these parameters is difficult and requires high-quality core samples for tests. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the applicability of the Brazilian test (BT) - a simple, less sophisticated and inexpensive method for both specimen preparation and testing - to estimate the UCS and shear strength parameters of rocks. Thirty-seven rock types were sampled and tested, 24of which were volcanic, 8 were metamorphic, and 5 were sedimentary. Statistical equations were derived to estimate the UCS and shear strength parameters of rocks using the BT. The validity of the statistically derived equations was confirmed using predictive analytics software (PASW Statistics 18). A strong linear relation was found between BT and UCS values. BT and UCS values exhibited prominent linear correlations withthe cohesion values of rocks. The Mohr envelope was also used to determine the cohesion and friction angle of rocks using BT and UCS values. It is deduced from the current study that the BT values can be used to estimate the UCS and cohesion. However, no relation was observed between the angle of internal friction values and the UCS and BT for all rock types. Therefore, different approaches are suggested for the estimation of the internal angle of friction for application in the preliminary design of projects.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree This paper addresses the critical parameters that need to be considered when designing a mechanized bord-and-pillar mining layout for a narrow tabular steep dipping orebody. These parameters are : ?Reef dip ?Reef width ?Geological structures within the orebody ?Physical dimensions of the selection of machines ?Gradeability of the selection of machines. The main objective in designing such a layout is to maximize machine efficiencies whilst minimizing dilution. This methodology was then applied in the design of a mechanized bord-and-pillar mining layout for a given piece of ground (Vlakpoort and Moddergat) using a given selection of machines. This piece of ground contains the PGM bearing UG2 Reef with an average thickness of 124 cm and dipping at 18°withadverse strike and dip changes. Two bord-and-pillar layouts were designed for this area. Layout 1 is characterized by the use of strike conveyors to convey ore on strike with an average LHD hauling distance of 35 m. Layout2 uses LHDs for all on strike conveyance of ore with an average hauling distance of 75 m. These two layouts were then technically and financially compared. It was concluded that layout 1 is theoretically superior but layout 2 was chosen due to its greater flexibility and probability of operational success. Layout 2 was also compared to conventional mining and it was concluded to be more economically feasible. However the latter is a proven mining method in these conditions and has a lower risk operational failure. Bord-and-pillar mining has some favourable promises such as improving labour difficulties, lowering operating costs and providing safer working conditions. The success of mechanized bord-and-pillar mining in narrow tabular steep dipping orebodies will depend on the extent of the research and development efforts which need to create and innovate technologies to overcome some of the current limitations stated in the above-mentioned parameters.

Sishen Iron Ore Mine previously used only A-grade material (>60% Fe in situ value) from the pit for beneficiating in the DMS plant to a final product grade of 66% Fe in lump and 65% Fe fine ore. The B-grade (between 50% and 60% Fe) and C-grade material (between 35% and 50% Fe) were stockpiled separately, owing to the inability of the existing DMS plant to beneficiate material at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3. The ability to beneficiate the B-grade material at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3 was evaluated, and air-pulsed jigs were found to be techno-economically feasible and value maximizing. The beneficiation of B-grade material would add to the existing DMS production of 28 Mt/a, with no additional mining cost and only limited costs for the handling of waste and B-material. The objective of the Sishen Expansion Project (SEP), i.e. the jig plant, was to produce 10 Mt/a of saleable product with six modules to the set physical and chemical specifications by 2009. During the start of construction, it was decided to add another two jig modules to the plant to increase production to 13 Mt/a. During commissioning and ramp-up the shortcomings and advantages of the jigs were fully experienced and understood, resulting in many changes to optimize jigging performance..

The corrosion behaviour of a low carbon steel was investigated in synthetic seawaters with and without Sr2+. It was found that strontium substitutes for calcium in aragonite, rather than precipitating as discrete strontianite (SrCO3). The aragonite deposits that formed in the presence of Sr2+ were finer than those that formed in the absence of Sr2+. It is believed that an increase in the strontium content of aragonite induces a decrease in its solubility, which in turn results in a higher nucleation rate of the precipitates. Furthermore, the growth rate of aragonite is decreased by the presence of Sr2+in the solution. It is concluded that Sr2+is an essential ingredient in any artificial seawater when calcareous deposits are investigated on steel. The basis of this paper is a compilation of work in the design and construction of copper heap leach facilities, and interviews with various heap leach operations personnel in Chile and Peru. The purpose is not to highlight specific mines and their performance, but rather to discuss geotechnical/civil features of copper heap leach facilities that function well, as well as features that do not. During the 1990s several copper heap leach facilities were brought on-line in South America. Many of these facilities have now been operational for a number of years during which time the operators have been able to monitor the performance of their heaps. This paper serves as a compilation of operators? experiences, and provides a discussion of the lessons learnt over the past decade. Several key geotechnical issues are examined, focusing upon the integrity of the ore, drainage material and pipe network, along with the success of inter-lift liners. This conference provides a timely update of the original paper (Burkhalter et al, 2002).

Energy efficiency is currently a significant area of interest due to the Eskom power situation, which led to severe power impacts to the PGM, and indeed whole SA primary industries, in early 2008. Anglo Platinum has focused on energy efficiency for a number of years, especially in the concentrator operational area. New comminution technologies have been aggressively developed, which have shown real metallurgical efficiency gains as well as significant energy efficiency and saving potential for Anglo Platinum?s total electrical consumption as the company expands into a growing PGM demand market. This paper illustrates this programme?s activities, potential and considerable achievements to date.

Discussed in the paper is the redesigned reserve/resource classification for solid minerals being put forth by the authors to replace the acting Russian classification of 19961. The new version is based on the traditional foundations of former Russian classifications and the principles of the ‘McKelvey box’, both categorizing mineral resources according to the degree of geological assurance and economic viability. Based on these approaches the classification deliberately deals with both reserve and resource categories very similar to those established by the Geneva Accords in terms of definitions implied. The authors proceed from the UN-ECE proposed concept of ‘reserves’ being a part of ‘total resources’ explored in great detail by geological and feasibility studies and economically mineable at the time of reporting. The draft classification distinguishes ‘proved’, ‘probable’ and ‘possible’ categories of reserves depending on the stage of feasibility assessment carried out, i.e. the degree of detail and accuracy with which modifying factors affecting mineability of an orebody are taken into account. The reserves are regarded as a product of feasibility assessment of ‘measured’, ‘indicated’ and ‘inferred’ resources. The portions of them not having been classified as ‘reserves’ are regarded as composed of two classes: ‘subeconomic’ and ‘potentially economic’ resources (or ‘resource base’). All the cells of the classification matrix are provided with traditional for Russia alphanumeric designations and appropriate UNFC codes. The classification scheme recommended is viewed as a step forward in improvement of the State inventory and reporting mineral resources in market conditions, conducive to cross-border professional collaboration in the field of providing reliable information on the mineral rawmaterials base of the world’s economy. Besides, it recommends an easy way to get rid of amethodological error in the UNFC classification scheme where consecutive stages of geologicalexploration are identified with a single inherent degree of geological assurance. Closed form solutions assume opening shape to be circular to simplify the calculation of the ground response curve for the design of underground openings. However, in mining and civil engineering works, non-circular openings are commonly excavated. Therefore, there is a need to estimate the ground response curve for such openings. In this respect, a simple model for circular, arch and rectangular shape underground openings subject to a hydrostatic stress field is the aim of this study. A comprehensive numerical modelling, using the finite difference method, based on numerical modelling code FLAC version 4.0, was carried out. In addition to shape of an opening, the effect of rock mass strength, opening size, in situ stress on strain (tunnel deformation to tunnel radius) of the opening in response to applied support pressures was investigated parametrically by developing models for each specific condition. The strain results for each excavation shape obtained from this large number of models against the normalized strength of rock mass and internal support pressure with in situ stress magnitude were evaluated by multiple regression analysis. As a result, a model that was well correlated to data was developed for an overall estimate of the ground response curve depending on relevant effecting parameters. The regression coefficients of the model were given for estimating both roof and sidewall response curve of each excavation shape. The model was verified by statistical tests and by an analytical solution. Diagrams were also established to highlight the influence of relevant parameters and to estimate the support pressure for a stable opening staying within the acceptable limits of strain. Strains occurring in a rectangular opening are found to be larger than those in the arch and circular openings for the other fixed parameters. In the mean time, larger strains occur around an arch shape opening than a circular opening.

Mine water in the Upper Olifants River Catchment in Mpumalanga(upstream of Loskop Dam) is at times discharged into local streams, resulting in local acidification and regional salination of surface water resources. Pollution of surface water can be prevented by collecting and treating mine water to a quality where it could be re-used without restriction (Cleanwater 2020 Initiative). Mine water in the Olifants River Catchment currently amounts to only 4,6% of the total water usage, but contributes 78,4% of the sulphate load. Limestone and lime treatment is the most cost-effective technology for neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acidic/sulphate-rich water to sulphate levels of less than 1500 mg/l due to precipitation of magnesium and removal of the associated sulphate fraction (through gypsum crystallization). Neutralized mine water of this quality may be suitable for irrigation. A number of alternative desalination treatment technologies were investigated (subsequent to gypsum crystallization pre-treatment) where treated mine water must meet more stringent quality requirements (e.g. less than 200 mg/lSO4). The capital cost of these processes varied between R4 million/(Ml/d) and R10million/(Ml/d) and the running cost between R2/m3and R5/m3. Water usage in the Upper Olifants River Catchment currently amounts to 947 Ml/d (including the power stations), and will increase to an estimated 1385 Ml/d by 2020. The additional water demand by2020 (438 Ml/d) will have to be supplied by importation from neighbouring catchments, and more efficient utilization of the local water resources, including excess mine water. Various levels of treatment are required to make mine water suitable for the following potential applications (acceptable treated water sulphate concentration shown in brackets): irrigation (2000 mg/l), coal processing plant (1000 mg/l), general industrial use (500 mg/l), discharge to public streams (500 mg/l), potable use (200 mg/l) and cooling water in power stations (20 to 40 mg/l). The following two options, or a combination thereof, can be considered for management of excess mine water in the Upper Olifants River Catchment: ?Collection and treatment of excess mine water to a quality suitable for selected urban and industrial applications (Option A) ?Collection and treatment of mine water to a quality suitable for irrigation (Option B). The estimated capital and running cost for Option A amounts to R528.5 million and R55.7 million/year, respectively, compared with R68,2 million and R11,9 million/year for Option B. It is recommended that Option B be investigated for implementation in the short to medium-term. Option B was selected due to cost benefits and the initial favourable results obtained by a joint Water Research Commission and Coal Industry initiative where mine water is used for irrigation. Option A may become feasible in the long-term to ensure maximum environ-mental protection and reduced treatment cost as a result of anticipated technological improvements over the next 5 to 10 years.

Drums of a modern longwall shearer are manufactured to include various constructional features conveying extracted material onto the face conveyor as efficiently as possible. Designing a drum with a conical shell or with reduced vane length, consequently with a stepper vane angle, is the most widely employed method in an attempt to increase loading efficiency. This study compares loading performances of two such drums, one having a conical shell with modified loading vanes, the other with a cylindrical shell with reduced vane length. Firstly, the loading performances of drums are predicted and the maximum haulage rate attainable with the drums are calculated. Then the performances of drum are compared by long-term comprehensive underground trials with coal shearers under similar conditions during the production operation of Park Termik Cayirhan coalmine in Turkey. Although higher loading performance is predicted for cylindrical drums, the in situ trials point out that Globoid drums have a slightly higher loading performance than cylindrical drums. Furthermore, the relationship between operational variables, i.e. extraction height, sumping depth, haulage rate and in situ loading performance, were investigated statistically on the basis of data gathered during the underground trials. Titanium bearing resources can selectively be chlorinated at temperatures below 200°C if the Ti02 in the feed is nitrided before chlorination. However, the nitriding reaction is highly endothermic, requires highly reducing conditions, is only thermodynamically favourable at elevated temperatures, and is affected by mass and heat transfer restrictions. At the required processing conditions, problems might also be experienced with sintering and with melting of slag forming components in the raw materials. A test programme was undertaken to study the effects of raw material type, temperature, gas composition, bed depth, carbon to raw material ratio and residence time in order to simulate conditions required for scaling up a nitriding process. In contrast to previous experience with low-grade titanium-bearing slag containing about 30% Ti02, ilmenite and chlorinateable slag do not form melting phases under the studied nitriding conditions and hardly sintered at all. Both feed materials can readily be nitrided with conversions in excess of 90% at temperatures around 1300°C and using bituminous coal as reducing agent with fixed carbon in excess of 1.1 times the stoichiometric requirement. The conversion decreases as the bed depth of the feed material increases and the N2/CO ratio in the gas decreases. Analysis of the relative rates of mass and heat transfer into the reacting beds of ilmenite and slag showed that the heat transfer rates are more limiting than the mass transfer rates. In order to increase the throughput that can be achieved in a kiln, it would be necessary to take special measures to enhance the heat transfer rates into the mass of reacting material. One such a measure is to pre-form the mass of reacting material into thin-walled, hollow brick shapes prior to introducing it into a kiln. Depending on bed depth, temperature and N2/CO ratio, required residence times in the high temperature zone of the kiln can vary between about 6 and 10 hours. This study aims at investigating the structural characteristics of backfilling material. In this regard, spatial arrangement of solid particles and associated voids in a unit mass of coal mine refuse as backfilling material were tested. The materials were produced from coal mine refuse of Zonguldak Colliery, Turkey. The experimental procedures were developed to determine their void ratio (or its equivalent porosity), bulk density and the shape properties of constituent particles. The orientation fabric and the co-ordination number were the other two fabric elements determined. The filling materials were sieved and their particle size distributions were found. The results obtained by experiments were related to the particle size distribution parameters, namely, the coefficient of uniformity and the effective size. It was concluded that mean value of void ratio is correlated with coefficient of uniformity. The standard deviation of porosity as an index of fabric heterogeneity is clearly correlated to effective size. By an original experiment, the frequency distribution of coordination number was observed as binomial in uniformly graded materials. Also, the co-ordination numbers of test mixtures were calculated by the Marsal method and results obtained showed a good correlation between the minimum particle size and number of contacts per unit area.

Platinum metal was first utilized by the Inca civilization in South America where it was found in alluvial deposits along the San Juan and Atrato rivers that lie between the Andean mountain range in Colombia and the Pacific Ocean. The nuggets found in these rivers average between 77% and 86%platinum, 7%?8% iron and small amounts of copper, gold and other Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). The Incas often alloyed platinum with copper to increase its workability and fabricated various ornaments from it.

Vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalyst has been utilized to oxidize SO2 to SO3 since the early 1900?s. This versatile product displaced the expensive and easily-poisoned platinum-based catalyst in nearly all applications by the 1930?s. MECS has been manufacturing the vanadium-based catalyst since 1925 and today is the leading supplier in the world of sulphuric acid catalysts in a variety of forms. Currently, MECS has world-wide customer/technical support for the catalyst as well as a dedicated catalyst manufacturing plant in Martinez, California. MECS also has a strong technical and research and development program dedicated to creating new and improved products and services. This paper will describe some of the technical details of vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalysts as well as offering a unique look into how caesium-promoted MECS catalysts can be used in single and double absorption acid plants, and off-gas plants running on irregular gas feeds, to reduce emissions and pre-heater run times. An update on MECS technical services extended for use in characterizing converter performance is also presented.

Klipspruit Colliery is experiencing coal losses, which leads to a negative impact on coal production and subsequently loss in revenue. This study aimed to identify the possible causes of coal losses in the No. 4 upper and lower seams. The objectives were to identify potential sources of coal losses through a literature survey, to identify areas where the coal losses occurred, to determine factors affecting coal losses, and to identify the most cost-effective methods to reduce coal losses. Highwall losses, top-of-coal losses, and coal edge losses were identified as the major areas of coal loss at Klipspruit. These losses were mostly attributed to the drilling and blasting practises of the pre-split, interburden waste, and the coal seams. Recommendations include re-visiting the current pre-split design and the tolerances adopted for the interburden and coal seam drilling and blasting design. It is furthermore recommended that Klipspruit implement a continuous improvement plan for the drilling and blasting and refresher training for the blasting crew and operators.
