"SynopsisThe application of the attainable region (AR) technique to the analysis of ball milling is currently limited to batch data. This paper introduces the use of the technique to continuous milling.To this end, an industrial open milling circuit processing a platinum ore was surveyed. Samples were collected and later characterized by means of laboratory batch testing. On site, several milling parameters were varied systematically so as to collect data for modelling purposes. These paramters included ball filling, slurry concentration, and feed flow rate. After data analysis, a simulation model of the open milling circuit was developed under MODSIM®, a modular simulator for mineral processing operations. The mill was then simulated and the data generated was analysed within the AR framework.Initial findings reveal an opportunity to gain valuable insight by studying milling using the AR technique. From an exploratory perspective and inasmuch as this study is concerned, feed flow rate, ball size, and ball filling were identified as being pivotal for the optimization of open ballmilling circuits. Mill speed, on the other hand, had only a limited effect on the production of particles in the size range -75 +10 µm.IntroductionGlasser and Hildebrandt (1997) propounded the attainable region (AR) as a technique for the analysis of chemical engineering reactor systems. Results have since been produced and tested on both the laboratory and pilot scales. The method results in a graphical description of chemical reactions by considering the fundamental processes taking place in the system, rather than the equipment. From the plotted graphs, the process and the reactors can be synthesized optimally into a flow sheet.The use of the AR method still has a long way to go as far as mineral processing is concerned. For instance, several articles have reported the application of the AR technique to ball milling: Khumalo et al. (2006, 2007, 2008); Khumalo (2007); Metzger et al. (2009, 2012); Metzger (2011); Katubilwa et al. (2011); Hlabangana et al. (2012). Their main shortcoming has been the exclusive use of laboratory batch grinding data.To address this deficiency, Mulenga and Chimwani (2013) proposed a way by which the technique could be extended to continuous milling. In effect, the batch milling characteristics of a platinum-bearing ore (Chimwani et al., 2013) were used and scaled up to an open milling circuit. Then, with simplifying assumptions, an attempt was made to optimize the residence time of particles inside the mill. Later, Chimwani et al. (2014a) presented some optimization examples involving various milling parameters. The sequence of published articles then paved the way for the study of industrial milling systems with the AR methodology."

Recovered activated carbon fines result from processing of ore and concentrates via cyanide leaching and sorption of valuable metals on carbon at gold-mining plants. This intermediate product is characterised by the particles sized smaller than 0.6 mm and gold grade up to 300-500 g/t. Processing of carbon fines with recovery of valuable metals is not available at many plants due to the lack of optimal technology. The paper describes the testwork and development of an efficient technology to process carbon fines with the recovery of valuable metals into the target gold alloy. This innovative technology involves pelletising of fine activated carbon particles using an organic binder, drying and further firing of pellets in a grate fired furnace at 800-900 °С. The produced ash is subject to sintering with sodium nitrate and hydroxide at 600-700°С. The sintered ash is then leached in water. The insoluble residue containing gold and silver is removed by filtration, dried and smelted to produce gold alloy. Water solution containing sulphur and arsenic is subject to detoxification. Processing of recovered carbon fines according to the developed technology implies the use of standard full-scale equipment. The offered method to treat gold-bearing carbon fines was patented by the Eurasian Patent Office. Written contribution by J.F. Curtist The paper is an interesting exercise in the application of mathematics to a theoretical situation presumed to oc¬cur underground. However, some of the assumptions on which the calculations are based are unlikely to occur in any actual mining situation. Assumptions made in the paper Objections to these assumptions are noted seriatim. (1) `it is assumed that any loading-rate effect will be small and can be ignored' (p. 3). A loading rate of the order of 50 kN-12 per cent of the maximum load-is customary to prevent the props being dislodged by the blast. (2) `it is unlikely that all the props will be installed with their full stroke available, but for the purpose of this analysis, it is assumed that this is the case' (p. 3). A more reasonable assumption would be that, with the most careful selection of prop length and the most rigid control of stope width, the available stroke length would on average be reduced by the order of 70 mm on installation-20 per cent of full stroke. (3) `each support unit supports a block of 3,3 m2 bound¬ed by vertical fractures with zero cohesion that are parallel and at right-angles to the stope face respec¬tively' (p. 5). Joughin and Jager have shown this to be an unwar¬ranted assumption in respect of the positioning, the direction, and the dip of the fractures present in a stope in rockburst conditions. If, as assumed, there was `zero cohesion' between such blocks, the removal of a hydraulic prop in row 3 supporting such a block would ensure that it fell out before a profile prop could be installed in the same position. (4) `the height of each of these blocks is 3,0 m, the volume of each block is 9,9M3, the mass of each block is 27 225 kg' (p. 5). The concept of individual props being affected by dis¬crete blocks of known and uniform dimensions of relatively low ground velocities (less than or equal to 2,16 m/s) acting in line with the axis of the prop is one that lends itself to neat mathematical calcula¬tions. It does not, however, bear much similarity to the actual conditions that are exposed underground in excavations where rockbursts occur. In order to obtain a more suitable separation medium for fine coal, in this paper a pulsed fluidised bed was used to measure the pressure fluctuation, density characteristics, bubble diameter and rising velocity of Geldart A and B particles in the bed by controlling the pulsation frequency and gas velocity, in order to study the fluidisation effect and two-phase distribution of the bed. The results indicated that with the increase of pulsation frequency, the breakthrough point on the fluidisation characteristic curve caused by particle adhesion disappeared, and there was an optimal frequency, which made the minimum fluidisation velocity of particles reach the minimum. In addition, the bubble rising velocity was also simulated. The relationship between them was established using a model, and the error was within 5%. This provides an effective way to predict the bubble velocity, study the distribution of bubble phase, and improve the stability of bed density. The kinetics of the reactions involved in the non-oxidative dissolution of nickel concentrate in hydrochloric acid were studied by electrochemical and powder-leaching methods. It was found that the rate of non-oxidative dissolution increases with a cathodic shift in the mixed potential, which can be achieved by an increase in the nickel-to-sulphur stoichiometric ratio at the reaction surface. An unactivated concentrate with a sulphur content of 36 per cent exhibited a mixed potential of +O,3V (SCE) and could not be leached satisfactorily in 3 M hydrochloric acid at 60°c. When activated material (18 per cent sulphur) was leached, it had a mixed potential of -O,3V, and high iron and nickel extraction rates. Results reported by other workers on the non-oxidative dissolution of sulphides are explained in terms of the mixed potentials at which dissolution occurs.

On Tuesday, 10th November, 1987, The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy held a colloquium attended by some 120 delegates on 'On-Stream Analysis' at Mintek, Randburg. Mr John Moore, Consulting Metallurgist of Anglo American Corporation of South Africa Ltd, introduced Mr Gene Fivaz, the President- Elect of the SAIMM, who read an address by Mr B.C. Alberts, the current President. Mr Alberts was unable to attend the Colloquium owing to urgent business overseas. Opening The opening address emphasized the important role of minerals in the South African economy. In particular, it was noted that 20 per cent of the work force were employed in the minerals industry or associated industries. In recent years, production costs had risen as a result of inflation, and sanctions had had some effect on the exportation of minerals. Thus, there was continuing pressure on the industry to improve recoveries and increase efficiency.

Although the incidence of heat stroke in South African gold mines is small, work continues on its reduction. This paper proposes limits of heat stress that are applicable to South African underground conditions, with the warning that they should not be extrapolated to other situations without careful consideration having first been given to their limitations. These limits of heat stress take physical and physiological considerations into account, and they correspond to there being a 10-6 risk of an essentially nude man developing a rectal temperature in excess of 40°C. It is recommended that further work should be undertaken on the development of equations for the calculation of the heat transfer from clothed men, the derivation of equations that quantify the physiological conductance and sweat rate response of humans, and on establishing the frequency distributions that describe variations in rectal temperature response between individuals in different types of environment.

Rand (Member) Recent studies have shown that the overall extraction of gold from Witwatersrand ores is increased as the proportion of gold reporting to the amalgamation circuit is increased. Testwork has therefore been carried out with a view to improving recovery by gravity concentration. In this paper, the history of gold recovery by gravity concentration is reviewed, and methods and machines at present in use are briefly described. The results of plant and laboratory tests are presented, and the limitation of existing concentrators is discussed. A pilot plant is being built for the testing of improvements to the existing concentrators and of several new devices, particularly the Reichert-cone concentrator.

Tarkwa Gold Mine is owned by Gold Fields Ghana, IAMGOLD and the Government of the Republic of Ghana in a 71%, 19% and 10% ratio. The mine is operated by Gold Fields Ghana. This large, low-grade, open pit, gold mining operation is located in Tarkwa, in the Western Region of Ghana, approximately 320 kilometres by road, west of Accra, the capital of Ghana, West Africa. In the Financial year ended June 2007, the operation mined a total of 108 million tonnes of which 22 million tonnes was ore. The mined ore is processed through three gyratory crushers supplying two heap leach pads (North and South) and a carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant. Before the 6 Sigma project commenced, the current fragmentation was resulting in sub-optimal feed size to these crushers. It was decided to use 6 Sigma methodology to improve the fragmentation. A defect was defined as a fragmentation analysis indicating less than 95% passing 750 mm. The objective was to improve fragmentation in order to achieve a constant throughput to the north heap leach crusher of 1500 t/hr, a 5% increase in pit loading efficiency and a 50% decrease in rock breaker hours, equipment damage costs and in-pit sheeting costs respectively. However, this was not to be achieved at the expense of grade control as Tarkwa is exploiting a low grade, high volume deposit and therefore ore dilution must be kept to a minimum. This paper is intended to take the reader through the various 6 Sigma phases of the project (Define ? Measure ? Analyse ? Improve ? Control) which have resulted in a 10% reduction in loading times, of which half has been attributed to improved fragmentation, as well as a substantial increase in blasted stocks. The focus has been on both drilling and blasting parameters as both processes had to be taken into account. These parameters are technical but personnel factors were also identified and dealt with as they arose. In order to measure the impact of any change in the process parameters on the fragmentation size distribution, cameras have been acquired. One has been installed looking into the bowl of the north crusher and the other one was dedicated to field observation, of individual blasts. Both are used for on-going fragmentation analysis. At Tarkwa, mining efficiency is strongly dependent on good fragmentation as well as the presence of un-blasted ?toes? on the pit floors. Crusher throughput depends on an acceptable ore fragment size. Compliance to plan with regards to actual hole depths was temporarily monitored by manual hole dipping, but, this is now being replaced with a fully automated Drill Data Management system developed by Sandvik and Modular Mining. The Six Sigma methodologies, using control charts based on data collected in the field, allowed the mine to improve methods with regards to the control of blasted material. It also enforced the implementation of a quality control programme encompassing the entire Drill and Blast process.

"In order to be able to map the variation in the concentration of elements in soils, it is necessary to sample at intervals that will give adequate coverage of the area and will allow determination of the rate of fluctuation of concentration with distance in any environment. This rate of fluctuation with distance can be referred to as the continuity of concentration.The continuity of concentration in soils varies according to the chemical characteristics of the element being considered, the underlying rock type or orebody and in response to the dispersion processes that operated during soil formation. Within any environment there is a maximum distance between sampling points within which adjacent sample values are related. This distance, the critical sampling interval, can be determined by means of a correlograrm.Where the sampling grid has been chosen to provide an adequate coverage over unmineralized rock, adjacent samples being related, anomalies may be missed if the element continuity in the anomaly is less than in the background. Results show that a knowledge of the critical sampling interval of the environment being examined may used to select a more efficient sampling pattern for a geochemical survey."

Ceramic filtration plates are used for dewatering slurries with high solid concentrations and particles in the size range of 30 μm to 150 μm. After extensive operating times, the ceramic filter plates at Minas Rio in Brazil begin to blind due to the precipitation of barium sulphate on the surface of the ceramic filter plate, which reduces the overall efficiency of the filtration process. Further research is needed to identify the barium precipitate phases on the blocked filter plates and its thermodynamic and kinetic behaviour in the system. A crystallography analysis was performed on the sample and the results showed that there are two different sets of precipitates formed on the filter plate: grey crystals which were large and scatted on the filter plate and red micro crystals that covered the entire surface of the filter plate. The red microcrystals on the sample were identified with XRD, which indicated that the sample contained barium sulphate in the mineral form barite. Experiments were conducted to determine the optimum conditions under which barium precipitation will occur. The conditions tested as a possible driving force for barium sulphate precipitation were the effect of temperature, pH and concentration. The pH and temperature ranges were pushed to both the lower and higher boundaries. The effect of temperatures as low as 15oC was studied and pH levels of 7 and upwards. The first nuclei started appearing at a pH of 7 but significant growth is promoted at higher pH levels. The X-Ray diffraction analysis confirmed the phase of the precipitates formed, and the orthorhombic crystallographic structure formed is a characteristic of barium sulphate. Calcium minerals such as scheelite, phosphate, apatite are valuable minerals, which have similar flotation properties to the calcium gangue minerals. An additional problem is the fine dispersion and close mineral association of valuable and other minerals. Low polar compounds (non-ionic surfactant), such as fatty iso alcohols, neonol and phosphol, and their combinations with sodium oleate have been studied using flotation of monominerals and ore flotation; ATR IR spectroscopy and TEM for study surface of minerals; UV spectroscopy for control solubility, aggregation and de-aggregation processes. Increase in solubility of fatty acid collectors was confirmed by low soluble (heteropolar) compounds. Oxyethylated esters of phosphoric acid are adsorbed on phosphorite by -O2PO2R2 and on other rock minerals by donation of OH bond. Same effect shows difference of adsorption of fatty iso alcohols on calcite and scheelite. The different forms of adsorption of ionic and nonionic compound on a sparingly-soluble mineral surface creates distinction of the flotation kinetics and technological balance of ore flotation. The results of the separation of flotation of scheelite from calcite depend on the order of pouring into pulp of fatty iso alcohols and oleate, and their ratio in the mixture. Increasing scheelite recovery into rougher scheelite concentrate by 3.6% for both the flotation and sludge classes was obtained. Calcite recovery varied slightly upwards or downwards by 0.8-2.4%. The use of the non-ionic surfactant phosphol in combination with a fatty acid soap allows for obtaining a phosphate concentrate with more than 28% P2O5 content and almost 80% recovery in flotation operation. "The mining industry in the Democratic Republic of Congo has seen a significant expansion in copper and cobalt production in recent years. The greater proportion of this expansion has arisen through processing of oxide ores. The design of metallurgical processes for these oxide ores is based on the conventional equipment and layout for processing of sulphide ores, and comprises milling followed by leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. The physical characteristics of the oxide ores, however, provide the process design engineer with an opportunity to examine critically the principles on which equipment selection is based and to design processes better suited to these ores. In 2015, ERG Africa began a project to expand the leaching capacity of the Luita hydrometallurgical facility. A number of innovative changes to the conventional process design were included in the modified flow sheet, which were validated when the project reached design throughput in November 2017. Of these changes, the most novel presented an alternative approach to mitigate the impact of colloidal silica on the operation of the solvent extraction plant. Introduction ERG Africa operates the Luita hydrometallurgical facility located at Kakanda in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), treating malachite and heterogenite minerals to recover copper as electrowon cathode and cobalt as a hydroxide precipitate. The process was originally conceived as a heap leach operation followed by direct electrowinning of copper, with solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) of cobalt. In preparing the sized ore for the heap leach operations, the undersized ore fraction at a P80 of 625 µm was discharged to a fines storage facility for later processing. This fraction carried with it approximately 30% of the copper contained in the run-of-mine (ROM) ore feed, and an equivalent proportion of cobalt.In a subsequent development, the cobalt SX section was converted to a copper SX facility, the leached cobalt being recovered from a bleed stream from the copper heap leach circuit. The operating cost for the process as then installed placed this facility well in the fourth quartile of the industry cost curve. The initial Luita operation was established in 2010 at a time when metal prices were above long-term averages (copper above US$3.00 per pound; cobalt above US$20.00 per pound), and the drop in prices in 2015/2016 presented a major challenge. The London Metal Exchange (LME) copper price dropped below US$2.00 per pound, with cobalt dropping below US$10.00 per pound in Q1 2016. This set in motion a range of improvement initiatives for the Luita operation. Central to this was the installation of a tank leach circuit to process the discarded fines and a modified SX circuit to manage colloidal silica. The revised Luita circuit reached design capacity in November 2017 and has proven to be well suited to processing of the oxide ore feed. This process design challenges the boundaries of conventional thinking in the areas of leaching, solid/liquid separation, solution management, impurity management, and metal recovery, and is the subject of this paper."
