In the mining method used at O'Okiep Copper Company (OCC), vertical crater retreat, the prime requirement for the fill is that it should be sufficiently strong to be free-standing to a height of 150 m. Other requirements are minimal decant and drainage water, and high pulp density to allow large tonnages to be placed quickly and alleviate transport problems. The excessively high cost of cement precluded the use of a cement-based fill, and after three years of extensive investigations a backfill based on the smelter slag was produced. Currently a fill with a uniaxial compressive strength of greater than 1 000 kPa after one month is being produced. This is in excess of the design specification of 850 kPa after 2 - 3 months. The research and development which went into the slagfill is briefly covered; the production of the fill from the various raw materials is described; and the design and control systems of the backfill plant, the reticulation system and its monitoring are examined. Finally, the implications of this high- quality fill for the mining programme are assessed.

A number of shallow coal or hard rock mines employ pillar mining systems as a strategy for roof failure control. In certain platinum mine layouts, pillars are designed to ‘crush’ in a stable manner as they become loaded in the panel back area. The correct sizing of pillars demands some knowledge of the pillar strength and the overall layout stress distribution. It is particularly important to understand the impact of the layout geometry on the effective regional ‘stiffness’ of the rock mass around each pillar. An important design strategy is to model relatively detailed layout configurations which include a precise representation of the local pillar layout geometry and to analyse multiple mining scenarios and extraction sequences to select optimal pillar sizes and barrier pillar spacing. Although computational solution techniques are now impressive in terms of run time efficiency, a major difficulty is often encountered in assigning suitable material properties to the pillars and in devising an effective material description of the layered rock strata overlying the mine excavations. This paper outlines an efficient numerical strategy that can be used to assess large-scale pillar layout performance while retaining the ability to modify individual pillar constitutive behaviour. The proposed method is applied to selected layouts to compare estimated average pillar stress values against values determined by detailed modelling and against observed behaviour.

WeissThe reasons for failure of computer applications in the mineral industry and the direction of future developments.The Chairman opened the discussion by elaborating on the disappointment felt by some authorities with the lack of progress in the application of computers in the mineral industry during the last ten years, and posed the question to the panel : 'Do you agree that the computer age has not come up to expectations?'Mr Langton said that although there seemed to be a tremendous amount of brainpower applied to the theoretical side, he thought that the production men had not got all the help from computers that could have been given to them. The computer, said Prof Griffiths, is as yet a new tool which should not be used to do old things in old ways. To learn to use the computer will take time. After all, he said, it had taken 400 years after the introduction of the printing press to achieve general literacy, and perhaps it will take 40 years after the introduction of the computer to achieve `numeracy'.In Mr Weiss' view, the reason for the feeling of disappoint¬ment lay in the focussing of attention on the computer. The blame, if any, lay with the people surrounding the computer, that is, the analysts and programmers, to whom the emphasis should be shifted.Prof Hawkins said that he thought that some applications of the computer in the mineral industry had been successful, such as, for example, the compilation of payrolls. Reasons for failures in other areas were to be sought in the fact that the people connected with computers had failed to realise that they were merely part of a system. They had not understood the power structure of the organization which their work tended to change, and were therefore not prepared for the inevitable conflict with the production men.In Mr Splaine's view the production man had not received the assistance he could have had from the computer people because he may possibly not have allowed this to happen.Prof Bleksley concluded from these opinions that the promise which computers had ton years ago had not been fulfilled and added that the opinions expressed by the panel had intruded on his next question which was: 'Is the reason for this that people are involved?Prof Hawkins elaborated on his previous theme, namely, that of computer people in relation to management. Com-puter people, he said, were trying to impose change on management but were not prepared to share the responsibility for these changes. In fact, they wanted their work to be distinct and separate, and, as far as management was concerned, changes would be made when management believed that these would be less agonizing than no change at all."

FINANCE The annual accounts which are attached to this report show an excess of income over expenditure of R21 519. It is very gratifying to be able to report that Council's efforts to stop the depletion of our accumulated funds are meeting with success. The most important contributors to our surplus this year are symposia and colloquia, sales of publications, Company Affiliate subscriptions and the profit on the journal. While we do not expect continued profits from all these sources in the future we do feel that we are now in the process of accumulating a substantial financial foundation. This will give the Council the necessary confidence to initiate the new developments in the activities of the Institute which are now under consideration. The decision to create a new grade of membership, Company Affiliate, is dealt with elsewhere in this report. There has been a generous initial response from companies and this is the cornerstone of our improved financial expectations. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R91 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4 502. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year from R9 160 to RH 331, which is R2 134 in excess of the book value. Accumulated funds now amount to RH 529 compared with R23 010 a year ago. MEMBERSHIP Sixteen Fellows, twenty Members, six Graduates, nine Associates, twelve Students and twenty-four Company Affiliates were elected during the year. One Member and two Associates were reinstated. Twelve members were admitted to retired membership. Transfers: Member to Fellow, three. Graduate to Member, seven Associate to Fellow, one. In recent years the requirements for a barrier system between the waste body of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and the natural ground (NG) has necessitated the use of HDPE-lined TSFs in South Africa and other countries. The addition of an HDPE liner creates an interface between, inter alia, the tailings and surrounding soils on the footprint of the TSF. It is known that low-strength materials beneath slopes can cause slope instability. One method which can theoretically mitigate this instability of a lined TSF is the addition of stability bunds along the footprint of the TSF. Altering the profile of the footprint to include slope changes which oppose the direction of the failure creates passive slices in a limit equilibrium analysis. The passive slices actively oppose the movement of active slices, resisting the mobilization of tailings, thus greater active slice forces are required to develop a failure surface running along the liner interface. Two scenarios are presented and compared. The first scenario retains the ground profile unaltered and the second scenario includes stability bunds along the ground profile. An in-depth assessment is made of the interslice forces and the interface shear stresses for each scenario. The theoretical background is discussed in greater detail to determine the mechanisms of reinforcement provided by the bunds.

The paper summarizes the current state of development of simulation models for SAG and FAG mills, and gives the results of recent investigations of the physical processes occurring in autogenous grinding. The breakage process is treated as the sum of three regions of breakage actions: normal breakage caused by nipping of particles between media (steel balls or pebbles); abnormal breakage caused by media when the particle or lump is too big in relation to the media to be readily nipped; and self-breakage resulting from the chip¬ping fracture and abrasion of the tumbling action of rock lumps. Each region of breakage action has associated specific rates of breakage and primary progeny fragment distributions. A simplified form of the model was used to predict the performance of an 8 m diameter SAG mill with L/D = 0.5 grinding a copper ore, and predicted maximum capacity and minimum kWh/ton at about 6% ball load at 25% total filling. Two FAG mills of L/D = 2 were necessary to give the same capacity, and the simulations indicated a lower kWh/ton for these mills. For this ore, both systems were technically feasible.

"The aim of the audit was to determine whether the mining project environmental impact assessments (EIAs) in Kenya are undertaken according to international best practice. A sample of 50 EIA reports for the 2007–2016 period was evaluated using 18 criteria in the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW) guidelines. The findings showed that only two criteria were considered ‘excellent’ according to the ELAW guidelines, namely baseline environmental assessment and prediction of physical impacts. Six criteria were found to be ‘satisfactory’, including prediction of social impacts, analysis of alternative options, and impact mitigation. The reports were quite weak in terms of: consideration of all phases in the mining cycle, environmental regulatory framework, prediction of biological impacts, stakeholder consultation and engagement, integration of human right issues, and integration of climate change and cost-benefit analysis. It is therefore recommended that the Kenyan National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) should consider tightening the EIA terms and conditions in the approval of statutory terms of reference (ToR) for full-scale mining EIAs to ensure improved performance of EIA as a tool for environmental protection. IntroductionThe nexus between society and the environment has continued to generate interest because the environment is the source of goods and services that sustain the various needs of human beings as outlined in the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) (Armstrong and Peart, 2000; Sutton 2004; Chakrabarti 2007; Strange and Bayley 2008). All the five generic categories of societal needs, namely physiological needs (food, water, clothing, medicines, etc.), residential and occupational needs (shelter, transport, energy, etc.), economic needs (tradeable goods and services), leisure and recreational needs (tourism), and cultural and spiritual needs (e.g. sacred resources and ecosystems) (Mwaura et al. 2016) are addressed by the environment. Consequently, a wide range of development sectors have been established around the world in order to address the above needs (Lederer, Galtung, and Antal, 1980; Rammelsberg et al., 2006; Noonan, 2014). All these development sectors rely entirely on the environment for their proper functioning, as shown in Table I."

The paper explains the main effects of input leaching parameters, such as addition of a reducing agent, acidity, agitation, temperature, and leaching system potential, in relation to observed and predicted yields of sought-after cobalt. An artificial neural network coupled with graphical probability networks was developed wherein the abovementioned input parameters were used to predict the percentage of dissolved cobalt. Furthermore, similarities and differences between the Bayesian and neural network approaches in terms of their key outcomes are compared with respect to study of the dissolution of cobalt in sulfuric acid. Key results indicate that there is a need to use neural network results to predict conditions for dissolution of cobalt, while using Bayesian network to explain inferences about conditions of the input parameters, thereby achieving realistic predictions.

The President declared the Meeting open at 4.08 p.m. OBITUARIES The President: Ladies and gentlemen, before we start the business of the meeting, it is my sad duty to announce the deaths of the following members of the Institute since our last meeting: Dr O. A. E. Jackson, Honorary Life Fellow and Past President; C. Airth, T. L. Blunt, A. E. Frazer, C. L. Lamb, and K. Richardson, Life Fellows; and J. T. Beaumont, Fellow. As you know, there were a number of other deaths during the year, which were reported at previous General Meetings of the Institute. As a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased, and in sympathy with the bereaved, I ask you to rise and observe a few moments' silence. In particular, we welcome Mr Mike Gericke, President of the South African Council of Professional Engineers, and Professor Midgley, President of A. S. and T. S. We are also pleased to welcome the Presidents of the Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Certificated Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, the Civil Engineers, the Joint Council of Scientific Societies, the Mine Ventilation Society, the South African Association of Consulting Engineers, the Association of Mine Managers, the Institute of Foundrymen, the Institute of Welding, the Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers, Mine Surveyors, Production Engineers (London), and the Institute of Production Engineering. Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of seventeen and the standing committees held 45 meetings. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of expenditure over income of R4,608 compared with R2,124 last year. This deterioration can be attributed largely to two important factors, namely an increase in secretarial fees of RI, 789 and an increase in the loss on the Journal from R2,343 to R3,508. In addition, our contribution to the expenses of the Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers increased by R607 from R549 to R1,156. The increase in secretarial fees is partly due to our increased demand for services and partly to increased salaries. In order to maintain its essential services it has been necessary for the A.S. & T.S. to increase salaries in order to keep pace with commerce and industry. With regard to the Journal, we did not expect immediate dramatic results from the changes that were effected as from the beginning of last year in the arrangements for publication. However, the improvement has been even slower in materialising than we expected. This situation is being watched carefully and we will not hesitate to make further changes if necessary. It became clear early in the year that the financial position was deteriorating and your Council decided that it was essential to meet the situation by raising subscriptions and entrance fees. At the same time it was decided that there are no grounds for a distinction between Town and Country members and that in future the scale for the compounding of subscriptions should be based on anticipated future membership, rather than past membership. These changes have had only a minor effect on the accounts under consideration. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R132 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4,338. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures decreased during the year from R13,059 to R6,567, while accumulated funds now amount to R17,959 compared with R22,567 last year. It will also be noted that we are holding R25,844 on behalf of the Symposium on Opencast Mining. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE A committee was established to organise a drive for membership as it was felt that there are numbers of persons in our mining and metallurgical industries who are not yet members but who qualify for membership. Members of the committee were allocated responsibility for campaigning in sections of industry and for publicising the aims, objectives and advantages of belonging to the Institute.

Ion exchange is widely used in hydrometallurgical operations for the recovery and purification of valuable metals. Special chelating resins have a high affinity for specific elements, allowing the selective removal of low levels of impurities from a background of highly concentrated valuable metal. Solvent-impregnated resins have been added to this group more recently, expanding the treatment options. These products find application in the purification of cobalt-rich liquor prior to the production of high-purity metal or metal salts. Impurities in copper-cobalt circuits that are typically targeted by ion exchange include iron, uranium, copper, zinc, nickel, bismuth, and antimony. Ion-exchange resins can also be used to treat tailings, thereby recovering additional valuable metal and improving the Environmental and Social Governance credentials of the operation. Today the roller screen has a wide range of applications in the steel-making industry. It is used for screening of green pellets before using the kiln. Since the appropriate size of a green pellet is -16+9 mm, there are different gaps between rollers that make green pellets classified in three categories: -9 mm (undersize), -16+9 mm (onsize) and +16mm (oversize). The efficiency of a roller screen is specified according to the weight percent of undersize in onsize as a fine material, and weight percent of onsize in oversize (loss). This efficiency is influenced by different operational parameters such as roller diameter, roller speed, and roller gap, material type of rollers and inclination of roller screen. This study investigates the effect of different material types of rollers in efficiency of Ardakan roller screens, located in the Yazd province of Iran. The rollers of the existing roller screens in this pelletising plant are made of polyurethane which according to this investigation, has a maximum lifetime of about six months. Operating the polyurethane rollers beyond its lifetime generates serious problems such as high wear of rollers, and consequently, material buildup on the roller surface which then significantly decreases the roller screen efficiency. So, after examining different roller materials, stainless steel 304 with higher surface roughness to help pellets move properly on the roller screen surface was selected as a solution to this problem. The new roller screen was constructed by Fakoor Meghnatis Spadana (FMS) and replaced the previous one. In this way, the maximum capacity of the roller screen was increased about 17% and the roller screen efficiency was increased about 15%. A study of the arrangements for pulp discharge on pebble mills, and their influence on mill performance by A. H. MOKKEN, B.Sc. (Eng.) (Rand) (Fellow), G. K. I. BLENDULF, M.Sc. (Stockholm) (Member), and G. J. C. YOUNG, B.Sc. (London) (Member) Although used for many years in the gold-mining industry, the conventional pan lifter at the discharge end of a pebble mill has hindered attempts at optimization of speed of rotation and pulp flow. A theoretical approach to flow patterns in pan lifters has pointed to limitations in the capacity of these lifters, with capacity decreasing as speed of rotation is increased. Complete elimination of the pan lifter by the adoption of peripheral or end discharge has resulted in a marked increase in pulp flow and an improvement in power utilization. Assays of the gold content of pulp discharged after a mill stoppage from mills fitted with pan lifters show values well in excess of the current milled grade, which indicates an accumulation of gold particles in the mill and, therefore, a longer retention period. The same could apply to other heavy minerals and metals present in the ore feed or worn off mill linings and metallic grinding media. Examples are osmiridium, fine iron and iron alloys, and copper and sulphide minerals. This phenomenon is attributed to the higher specific gravities of these metals and minerals, causing them to migrate towards the mill shell, from which position they are not readily removed by the lifters at the discharge end of the mill. The close association of gold particles with iron and sulphide minerals in the crevices of mill liners might be conducive to the formation of coatings on the gold. Assays of samples of milled pulp taken from a mill designed for end discharge show a lower accumulation of gold. The accumulation and nature of these gold particles are being studied at present. With increasing diameters of pebble (or autogenous) mills, peripheral or end discharge appears to be the preferred method of pulp removal.

"Pressure leaching is an option for copper recovery from chalcopyrite. Leaching takes place at high temperatures and pressures in the presence of an oxidizing agent. This work shows how the performance of pressure leaching circuits may be improved by optimizing the configuration of autoclaves and the heat removal method. The objective was achieved by creating an autoclave model that combines mass balances, energy balances, and population balances. A base case circuit consisting of a single autoclave was chosen, and this base case was compared with options for increasing capacity by adding more autoclaves to the circuit. These capacity increase options include circuits in which the additional autoclave is added in parallel, in series, and in series with thickening between the two autoclaves. The copper extraction, productivity, and cooling requirements for these options are compared. The series circuit with interstage thickening has the highest extraction and productivity; however, the cooling duty in the first autoclave is high. In addition to comparing circuit options, three options for heat removal were investigated: cooling coils, quench water, and flash recycling. The flash recycle option results in the highest copper extraction, and the quench water option the lowest copper extraction. IntroductionBackgroundCopper sulphide ores and concentrates containing chalcopyrite are typically hard to leach under atmospheric conditions. Smelting of these ores may also be a challenge, due to the inability of smelting processes to handle low-grade ores, as well as impurities such as arsenic and antimony. Alternative hydrometallurgical routes to treating chalcopyrite are therefore required. One option is pressure leaching, which is the focus of this work.In the pressure leaching process, sulphide ores and concentrates are leached in autoclaves at temperatures of 200 to 220°C and a pressure of about 3000 kPa (Schlesinger et al., 2011). An oxidizing agent, usually oxygen, is required to oxidize sulphide ions to sulphate ions. The oxidation of sulphur to sulphate is exothermic; consequently, a method of heat removal is necessary in order to maintain the temperature in the autoclave."

Spiral concentrators are gravity-based separators widely used to beneficiate coal, heavy minerals and beach sand. It consists of a helicoid trough that spirals downward in the helical configuration around an axial column. The particle segregation takes place based on size and density under the influence of gravity as the particles spiral down within the thin water layer. In the last century, most design modifications of this equipment were based on trial and error based lab-scale experimentations and empirical approach. The use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has gained interest in the past two decades to understand the underlying flow physics in the spiral concentrators. In this paper, we used CFD to model the fluid flow and investigate the particle segregation inside a conventional LD9 spiral concentrator. Firstly, the Volume of Fluid model was used to resolve the liquid-air interface. The liquid depth and flow field predictions for varying flowrates were validated against the experimental literature data. One-way coupled VOF-LPT model was then used to describe the particle dynamics in the spiral flow field assuming dilute particulate flow. Moderate dense particulate flow (20 vol.%) was then modelled using the Algebraic Slip Mixture (ASM) model. Four particle-phases representing particles of different sizes of dual-density were simulated, and the component particle segregation was analysed. A variety of backfills is presently being placed in different gold mines. The backfills are pumped as slurries to stopes where they are discharged into some form of retaining paddock. The effectiveness of fill as a support medium will depend on a number of factors. These can largely include (i) inherent properties of the material, e.g. particle size, shape, distribution and com- position, and (ii) conditions of placement. The terminology required for describing backfills is introduced, and the various laboratory-measured properties are presented for a variety of fills. Finally, the properties of the fills as they are placed underground are discussed.

Spiral separators have been widely accepted as one of the most flexible gravity separation devices for several decades. The International Journal of Mineral Processing, 84, pp. 118 – 132 mentioned that spirals are for treating material too coarse for flotation and too fine for dense-media separation. Powder Technology V 102, pp 244 – 252, 1999 stated that there exists a genuine need for extending the performance envelope of spirals – whether to treat finer or coarser material than the traditional size ranges. In recent times there has been an upsurge in interest, particularly in the development of newer fine gravity separators. Spiral separators for the recovery of ultra-fine particles have a unique profile, pitch and features to ensure efficient performance. The flow on the spiral trough must be controlled to minimise turbulence that will entrain fine particles in the outer section of the trough. The experimental test work showed a movement of mass from the outer region towards the centre column of the spiral, i.e., from the fine tailings band towards the concentrate. As recovery on the spiral trough is a function of mass yield and grade, the ultra-fine 7 spiral had a better recovery than the HX5. This makes the UF7 an ideal rougher spiral.
