Ion exchange is considered to be an effective technology for the removal of various impurities from cobalt advance electrolytes. With the correct choice of resin, ion exchange can consistently remove the required impurities to the levels for the production of high-grade cobalt metal. Although ion exchange was in the past used primarily for nickel removal, more recently it has been also considered for the removal of copper, zinc, and cadmium. Generally, granular ion exchange products are used, but Mintek is currently evaluating ion exchange fibres for a number of applications, including the removal of copper from cobalt advance electrolytes. Fibrous ion exchangers have major advantages compared to granular resins in that they have significantly higher reaction rates, and wash water volumes could be limited. Granular and fibrous ion exchangers were evaluated and compared for the removal of copper from cobalt advance electrolyte. A synthetic electrolyte containing 50 g/L cobalt and 50 mg/L copper was used for the test work. Equilibrium isotherms, mini-column tests, and split elution tests were done. The results were used to size a full-scale operation to treat 100 m3/h of electrolyte. The potential cobalt losses or recycle requirements were estimated, and data to calculate indicative operating costs for each adsorbent was generated. This information was used for a techno-economic comparison of granular and fibrous ion exchange systems for the removal of copper from cobalt advance electrolyte.

The earliest authenticated scientific report of the occurrence of platinum in rocks from the Bushveld Complex appears to be by William Bettel on 10th November 1906. Thereafter, prospecting of the chromite-rich rocks for platinum proved frustrating. I suggest that the resurgence of interest shown by Dr Hans Merensky in 1924 resulted from his realization that newly-panned platinum had a different grain size from that in the chromite layers and indicated a different source rock, which he located and it became known as the Merensky Reef.

Premier Mine is a large underground diamond mine, situated at Cullinan in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. The mine hoists over 3 millions tons of diamond bearing kimberlite per year, from a modern, mechanized panel retreat block cave mining operation. Troughs sited at the base of the cave are developed into the overlying caved ore, allowing loading access to the ore through draw points. Trough opening is therefore a vital aspect of the mining operation. Most of the production is dependent on fast, reliable and safe trough opening. Successful trough openings are achieved under difficult mining conditions due to restricted void, long up-holes and the inherent properties of kimberlite?soft, elastic rock with a high swell factor. Early in 1998, Premier Mine undertook a joint development project (with an electronic initiation system supplier) to determine whether the use of a fully programmable electronic detonator system would enhance the mining cycle in the trough opening process. Blasting commenced in February 1998, initially with blasts of a similar size and duration to those that had been previously blasted with shock-tube systems, to confirm the operational capabilities of the blasting system. The accuracy, reliability and flexibility of the electronic delay detonators (EDDs) minimized associated risks for re-engineering of the trough opening process. Further, as blast timing was optimized, larger blasts were successfully initiated. To date over 20 troughs have been opened successfully with the use of EDDs. Not only did it take less time to open troughs, but also drilling and blasting operations have been optimized, as well as an overall improvement in safety. This paper details the benefits that EDDs have delivered to Premier Mine in this area. Decision-making regarding plant-scale reagent dosage regimes and air rates is a topic of ongoing investigation and high importance. The current work explains some techniques that have proven useful in deciding on plant-scale flotation operating regimes. Specific focus has been placed on the reagents: frother and depressant, as well as some discussion around the control of air rate and froth depth. Air rate has been selected based on its effects on the froth phase. Froth velocity and froth height above the cell lip are the two variables measured and used to select the operating air rate. Pulp level is then adjusted to increase or decrease mass pull. A technique has been developed using the Anglo Platinum Bubble Sizer on an industrial flotation cell to determine the relationship between bubble size and frother concentration. This technique has been extended to measure the equivalent frother concentration or frothabilities of various streams on a rougher bank. A mass balance for frother was performed successfully, and this provided a better understanding of the way frother moved in the rougher bank. With this knowledge, more informed decisions can be made about frother addition required in subsequent flotation stages. For depressant, a new protocol for deciding on dosage rate has been developed. The depressant dosage should be based on the amount of fresh feed material reporting to a bank. Currently 400 g per ton of fresh feed has been assumed a reasonable starting point, with promising results. Improved froth stability and grades were observed. There is scope for more accurately defining the optimal dosage rate. Importantly, the combined effect of changing the chemistry and the hydrodynamics together has been demonstrated. A significant upward shift in the grade-recovery relationship for a cleaner bank was observed.

In the first part of the article, the authors give a broad overview of the chemistry and some engineering aspects of bioleach processes, eventually leading to the important and critical issue of the stability of arsenic-containing residues, especially those derived from bioleaching of sulphidic gold ores. In the section ?Factors affecting arsenic stability? they give an excellent summary of the factors normally affecting the stability of such residues. This is followed by some valid comments on the suitability of a single leach test to evaluate the long-term stability of solid waste streams. However, they fail to mention that, up till now, no tests procedure has been accepted by either environmentalists or the mining/processing industry as a valid method to test the long-term stability of solid wastes. Their own method is no exception, although, like many others, it is useful to identify potential problems with solid wastes considered for disposal.

We present a novel hybrid algorithm for quantifying the ore grade variability that has central importance in ore reserve estimation. The proposed algorithm has three stages: (1) fuzzy clustering, (2) similarity measure, and (3) grade estimation. The method first considers data clustering, and then uses the clustering information for quantifying the ore grades by means of a cumulative point semimadogram function. The method provides a measure of similarity and gives an indication of the regional heterogeneity. In addition, grade estimations can be obtained at different levels of similarity using a weighting function, which is the standard regional dependence function (SRDF). Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is defined as ‘The goods and services that support the electronic display, processing, storage and transmission of information’. Early in 2002 the South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) commissioned a study into the diffusion and adoption of ICT in eight sectors of the economy. The platinum mining Sector was one of these. The key findings presented in this paper are based on the platinum sector component of that study. The paper examines the theoretical basis behind technology transfer and innovation diffusion and presents the results of an ICT diffusion survey carried out in the South African platinum mining sector. ICT is shown as the modern day technological tool which is an accelerator of economic development. The current state of ICT diffusion in the platinum mining sector is defined and projections for the near future are given. Recommendations which will ensure smooth and full adoption are presented and justified.

Risk lies at the heart of all mining and nowhere more so than in pit slope design. Mining is principally about two areas of risk; safety and economics. This paper addresses the main elements of pit slope design and presents a view of the state of the art in terms of safety, design, prediction of performance, success and pit slope management. There has been a recent trend for serious injury and fatalities due to stability in open pit mines. The causes and contributing factors are analysed in relation to geotechnical knowledge, pit slope design and management. Currently there is no standard classification system for mine slope designs and it is considered doubtful if a universal system is possible. Designs are usually formulated in accordance with many different methodologies, various engineering principals and a number of different philosophical approaches, with results often presented in terms of Factors of Safety or Probabilities of Failure. However wide experience has demonstrated that even with apparently detailed engineering investigation and analysis at Feasibility Level, at the Operating Stage mine slope angles are regularly subject to large changes. The general experience is that these changes are ± 5° and 16° overall, which is considerably outside the accepted order of accuracy. For large deep mines these are huge changes and represent significant risks to the operations. The current state of practice in pit slope design is examined for two stages, feasibility and operating.

A number of base-metal operations would like to increase production to take advantage of the higher metals prices. In general, this higher production should not be achieved with major operating changes. In hydrometallurgical facilities, leaching and pressure leaching represents one area where upfront limitations may be a bottleneck to the capacity of the entire plant. An assessment of the capacity of the leaching tanks and autoclaves was performed using a predictive model within the AweSym flowsheet simulator. The model is described, and the results of the application of the model to a number of different leaching reactors are presented. It is argued that the leaching number, which relates the residence time, particle size and the leaching rate, is of prime importance. Finally it is shown that there are some unexpected catastrophic events in increasing production capacity without a thorough understanding of the leaching operation.

The selection of an underground mining method stems from a multivariate analysis that considers geomechanical, geological, economic, and operational parameters. Even after identifying the most compatible method, there is no assurance that the mining company will achieve the best performance. The geological complexity of some deposits requires adaptations of methods described in the literature to obtain more selectivity and reduce mining waste. There are some studies on geometry of underground structures, but a methodology that describes an adaptation of a room-and-pillar mining method for ore bodies with down-dip varying from 20° to 25° is novel. The present work aimed to reduce dilution by adapting the traditional room-and-pillar mining method (TRP) to inclined ore boLittle attention has been paid to the rehabilitation of derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa after their lifespan. This paper aims to explore management gaps in legislation that have resulted in the non-rehabilitation of derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa. There is growing evidence that supports the distressing effects of mining on people living around these mines in the North West Province. This paper was motivated by the current socio-economic status quo of old mining towns, the influx of illegal miners (Zama Zamas), severe environmental damages, and the violence associated with derelict mines. Underpinning this research was an ecosystem approach and integrated resources management principles, which formed the foundation for the decision-making process.The researcher used a mixed-method approach and employed convergent techniques. A semi-structured instrument was used to collect data from 200 respondents. The results indicated that there is a dire need for community-based consultative processes, and an absence of clear guidelines for derelict and ownerless mines to pressure mine management to adhere to rehabilitation standards. Moreover, the mining charter is ambiguous regarding policy implementation, budgetary allocation, and duration of the rehabilitation of these mines. The paper concluded that management challenges associated with derelict mines can be reduced if all stakeholders follow the guidelines as outlined in the environmental legislative framework (NEMA) of South Africa while being open to innovations in line with international best practices. It also contributes towards the development of guidelines for the management and implementation of legislation related to derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa from a philosophical, theoretical, and policy perspectivedies. This new method is entitled short-hole room-and-pillar (SHRP). The equations that measure the dilution are defined according to the geometry of stopes and openings. The results comprise comparative analyses of the operational and planned dilutions to measure the performance of the SHRP method. The average operating dilution of the SHRP method was more than five times lower than the planned dilution according to the TRP method. Low operational dilution indicates high selectivity of the method and its potential to reduce underground mining tailings.

The Konkola Mine, a subsidiary of the Konkola Copper Mines Plc (KCM) which is owned by the Vedanta group of companies of India and Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Holding limited, is located at Chililabombwe in the northern extension of Zambia's Copperbelt province. In its operations, the mine has been experiencing problems in ascertaining the optimum degree of fineness and the operating density of the hydrocyclone overflow in order to achieve high flotation performance. It was believed that recovery of sulphide copper minerals from Konkola ore is a function of the fineness of the grind so that it might be an economical justification to modify the grinding plant in order to run at lower cyclone overflow densities than the case is now. In an effort to improve these operations, it was decided to carry out test work on various hydrocyclones of sizes 0.381 m, 0.4575 m and on 0.508 m. The later was found to give satisfactory results and was installed on the plant. Despite giving satisfactory results there was need to investigate further to establish the working densities and size. Increasing the density of cyclone overflow decreases the per cent passing 75 pm at least in the range 1080-1 150 g/l. Furthermore, hydrocyclones give better separation at low densities of feed and hence the efficiency is high at low feed densities. Circulating load increases with an increase in feed densities and an decrease in the grind. The flotation performance in both sulphide and oxide copper minerals rougher stages is enhanced with an increase in the degree of fineness of the grind, with an optimum being obtained at a density of 1 150 g/l and 81.4% passing 75 µm. The separation and beneficiation of low grade collophanite has long been a technical challenge in phosphorous production. It requires the joint efforts of process design, reagents optimisation and operational control. In this study, the statistical response surface method was applied for determining the optimum reagent dosing in the flocculate flotation of a low grade (18.59%) collophanite ore. The dosage of three reagents, including a pH regulator (Na2CO3), depressant (Na2SiO3) and flocculant (modified starch), were input parameters of the modelling design. Two quadratic mathematical models were derived for prediction of grade and recovery based on the statistical design. Statistical analysis of the experimental results validates the reliability of the models. Through further calculation, the optimum dosage of the three reagents were found to be 3,020g/t Na2CO3, 1,990g/t Na2SiO3 and 880g/t modified starch, with which a maximum recovery of 75.81% and P2O5 grade of 30.08% was obtained from flocculate flotation test. ABSTRACT: Hydraulic experiments have been conducted since 1997 within a small fractured calcareous rock mass in southeastern France, at a site called Coaraze. On this reduced-scale site closing a floodgate located on a downstream spring produces repeated hydraulic loadings. Simultaneous measurements of normal deformations and pressure in several joints have provided a better understanding of the hydromechanical behaviour of such a fractured rock mass. The present paper first describes both the site and conceptual interpretation of the measurements performed. We showed that accurate measurement reproduction requires incorporating certain features: a variable normal joint stiffness, the joint vicinity (through introducing a Z coefficient), and the initial stress state. The paper then develops an original analytical interpretation of the coupled pressure-displacement measurements carried out, which reveal the high level of measurement suitability to the non-linear behaviours examined. 2D modelling, using the discontinuous code (UDEC) was used to proceed with the calibration step. In diesem kleinen Standort, werden wiederholte Wasserdruck Erhöhungen durch das Schliessen eines Hahnes produziert. Gleichzeitiger Druck und normale Verformung Meßungen in mehreren Fugen haben erlaubt, das hydromechanische Verhalten einer solche gebrochene Felsenmasse besser zu verstehen. Der Artikel beschreibt zuerst den Standort und stellt die begrifflichen Interpretationen der Meßungen vor. Um die Meßungen gut zu reproduzieren ist es wesentlich, bestimmte Faktoren wie die veränderliche normale Steifheit der Fugen, die Nachbarschaft der Fugen (über einen Z-Koeffizient) und der Spannungstand zu berücksichtigen. Der Artikel erklärt die originale Methode für die Druck- und Verformungs-Meßungen Interpretation und zeigt die gute Korrelation der Meßungen mit dem nicht-linearen angenommen Verhaltens der Fugen. Die numerische 2D-Modellierung mit dem UDEC Software ist für die Verkeilung der Faktoren gebraucht worden. L'article précise la méthode originale d'interprétation des mesures pression-déplacements qui montre la bonne adéquation aux lois de comportement non linéaire proposées. Cokriging uses a sparsely sampled, but accurate and precise primary dataset, together with a more abundant secondary data-set, for example grades in a polymetallic orebody, containing both error and bias, to provide improved results compared to estimation with the primary data alone, as well as filtering the error and mitigating the effects of conditional bias. The method described here may also be applied in polymetallic orebodies and in other cases where the primary and secondary data could be collocated, and one of the data-sets need not be biased, unreliable, etc. An artificially created reference data-set of 512 lognormally distributed precious metal grades sampled at 25×25 m intervals constitutes the primary data-set. A secondary data-set on a 10×10 m grid comprising 3200 samples drawn from the reference data-set includes 30 per cent error and 1.5 multiplicative bias on each measurement. The primary and secondary non-collocated data-sets are statistically described and compared to the reference data-set. Variograms based on the primary data-set are modelled and used in the kriging of 10×10 m blocks using the 25×25 m and 50×50 m data grids for comparison against the results of the cokriged estimation. A linear model of coregionalization (LMC) is established using the primary and secondary data-sets and cokriging using both data-sets is shown to be a significant improvement over kriging with the primary data-set alone. The effects of the error and bias are filtered and removed during the cokriging estimation procedure. Thus cokriging using the more abundant secondary data, even though it contains error and bias, significantly improves the estimation of recoverable reserves.

The rebound phenomenon, which occurs during rockfalls when a rock block impacts with a slope surface, is influenced by several parameters related not only to the slope material but also to the block and the kinematics. The paper presents a small-scale testing campaign undertaken at the LMR (EPFL) to better understand and quantify the bouncing of blocks on granular slopes. The influence of some factors related to the ground material, the block and the kinematics is examined. Bei Steinschlägen wird die Flugbahn eines stürzenden Felsbrockens maßgeblich durch den Abprall vom Hang bestimmt. Der Rückprall hängt von verschiedenen Parametern ab, wobei nicht nur das Hangmaterial sondern auch Blockeigenschaften und Kinematik eine große Rolle spielen. Zum besseren Verständnis dieses Phänomens und seiner Quantifizierung werden am LMR (EPFL) kleinmaßstäbliche Versuchskampagnen auf granulären Materialien durchgeführt. Der vorliegende Artikel stellt die Versuche vor und untersucht den Einfluss verschiedener Boden-, Block- und kinematischer Parameter. Le phénomène de rebond qui se présente lors de l’impact d’un bloc rocheux sur la surface d’un versant dépend non seulement des caractéristiques du terrain, mais aussi de facteurs relatifs au bloc et à la cinématique. L’article présente une campagne d’essais sur modèle réduit entreprise au LMR (EPFL) afin de mieux comprendre et quantifier l’impact de blocs sur des matériaux granulaires. L’influence de divers paramètres relatifs au sol, au bloc et à la cinématique est mise en évidence.

Several methods exist by which the capacity of a dense media separation (DMS) plant can be improved: 1) Increase the feed rate in spite of efficiency 2) Replace with bigger equipment 3) Add whole new module 4) Replace total plant 5) Change over to four shift/ seven days per week roster 6) Replace with alternative process 7) Increase the availability and utilization Options 1 ? 6 have varying degrees of cost implications. The seventh option would seem to be the easiest. Normally it is also the function of the plant operating and maintenance team to maximize this. Usually higher operating and maintenance cost are associated with an increase in these parameters. A general principle that is applicable to plants and systems is that as the complexity increases, the total availability decreases. By simplifying the flow line it may be possible to reduce cost while at the same time increase the availability and utilization. The typical standard DMS flow line contains components that compensate for the variance in pump performance or for the inefficient recovery of ferrosilicon with additional equipment. "Since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) in mid-2008, capital has been more difficult to access. Mining projects must contend with projects from other industries for scarce capital. A decision to invest available capital in mineral projects requires that valuation be conducted to assess the expected return on the projects. The discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis is generally applied for the valuation of mining projects, whereby future cash flows are discounted to present value using an appropriate discount rate. The discount rate significantly affects the outcome of a valuation. Economic and finance theory provides tools to calculate discount rates. The discount rate must account for factors such as the risk and stage of development of the mineral project; hence the appropriate discount rate to utilize in a project is often a subject of debate.The discount rate is the weighted sum of the cost of debt and equity. There are several methods for determining the cost of equity. This study considers the commonly applied Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model because of their simplicity and availability of parameters required to estimate the cost of equity. This study explores how differences in the cost of equity obtained by these two methods can be explained for a mining environment. Data for empirical analysis were collected from the I-Net Bridge, McGregor BFA, and Bloomberg databases. It was found that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model provides better estimates of the cost of equity compared to the CAPM under depressed market conditions. Therefore, this research recommends that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model be used to estimate the discount rates for mining projects during periods of depressed market conditions."
