Hydraulic fluid power systems are advantageous whenever power output must be accurately and safely controlled. The load movers, cylinders, jacks, rotary actuators and hydraulic actuators in these systems can be made to smoothly and accurately start, stop, reverse, hold position or move steadily under heavy and variable loads or torques. Because hydraulic systems are simple, compact, reliable, and low cost compared to other power methods and because they can deliver controlled power anywhere on the machine to which a hose can be routed, they are a pan of almost every type of machine found on a coal mining section. Some of the functions they perform are positioning drill booms, driving drill pots on roof bolters, positioning curter booms, raising, lowering, and swinging conveyors, driving conveyors on continuous miners, raising, lowering, and applying sustained loads to longwall roof supports, and advancing the face conveyor and roof supports in longwall mining operations.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 352 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States and 5 foreign countries. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1974 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economics. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. This handbook describes effective methods for the control of methane gas in mines and tunnels. It assumes the reader is familiar with mining. The first chapter covers facts about methane important to mine safety, such as the explosibility of gas mixtures. The second chapter covers methane sampling, which is crucial because many methane explosions have been attributed to sampling deficiencies. Subsequent chapters describe methane control methods for different kinds of mines and mining equipment, primarily for U.S. coal mines. These coal mine chapters include continuous miners and longwalls, including bleeders. Coal seam degasification is covered extensively. Other coal mine chapters deal with methane emission forecasting and predicting the excess gas from troublesome geologic features like faults. Additional coal chapters contain methane controls for shaft sinking and shaft filling, for surface highwall mines, and for coal storage silos. Major coal mine explosion disasters have always involved the combustion of coal dust, originally triggered by methane. Thus, a chapter is included on making coal dust inert so it cannot explode. Methane is surprisingly common in metal and nonmetal mines around the world, as well as in many tunnels as they are excavated. Accordingly, a chapter is included on metal and nonmetal mines and another on tunnels. Proper ventilation plays the major role in keeping mines free of hazardous methane accumulations. The ventilation discussed in this handbook, except for the chapter on bleeder systems, deals only with so-called face ventilation, i.e., ventilation of the immediate working face area, not ventilation of the mine as a whole. The omission of whole-mine ventilation was necessary to keep this handbook to a reasonable size and because a huge amount of excellent information is available on the subject.2

This paper describes block -caving methods and practices of the Bagdad Copper Corp. in Yavapai County , Ariz . It is one of a series being prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts of the United States . The story of the Bagdad caving operation is of particular interest because the ore body was not as thick as at other mines where the method had been successful . At Bagdad the caving method worked very well as a smallscale operation of 300 tons per day but was abandoned when production was increased to 2,000 tons per day . The Bagdad mine is in western Yavapai County , Ariz . , about 22 miles northwest of Hillside , a station on the Phoenix -Ash Fork branch of the Atchison , Topeka & Santa Fe Railway system ( fig . 1 ) . Copper ore now is mined by open -pit methods . The ore is concentrated , and the concentrates are trucked to Hillside and shipped by rail to a custom smelter . Some molybdenum sulfide is produced as a byproduct . This report gives a brief history of the district , describes the ore de- posit , and outlines the methods of prospecting , exploration , and estimation of ore . Development and former underground mining , including stope preparation , stoping , and transportation , are described . Extraction of ore , production rates , miscellaneous operations related to mining , wage and contract systems , and method of concentration are described . The final section discusses mining costs . The underground mine was visited by the author several times between 1937 and 1942 , and some information has been drawn from personal notes . The property again was visited in June 1957 , and maps and plans for this paper were furnished by the company at that time ; they have been edited to conform with Bureau of Mines format . The underground mine could not be visited then because it had been closed in 1948 when open -pit mining was begun .

The feasibility of breaking hard rock by thermal weakening and subsequent mechanical impacting was tested, Field tests at a basalt quarry in Dresser, Wis., demonstrated that large hard-rock blocks (5 by 5 by 5 ft) could be effectively reduced in size by this method. A series of secondary breakage tests, using air-propane heating, resulted in an average heating cost of $0.36 per ton. This combination energy approach provides an alternate means of size reduction of large hard-rock boulders for quarry and for underground are chute and grizzly operations where mechanical methods, used alone, are ineffective.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash- softening temperature of ash, the free-swelling index, and the hardgrove grind- ability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instruc- tions issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the con- tractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal. The Government purchased approximately 5-1/4 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1953. In connection with these purchases, the Bureau analyzed 11,435 samples. These are published for the use of Government officials and the public. A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States, or, where production is small in any one State, by groups of adjacent States. In addition to analytical data showing composition and quality of coals of the States, the publications con- tain brief descriptions of the geological structure of the coal basins, typical mining conditions in the various districts, the principal economic data of the industry, and the relationship of mine or channel samples to delivered and tipple samples. The present publication covers many States but deals only with the analytical data of the coals. Tunnel driving is recognized as one of the most hazardous of occupations; this is a reflection of the high accident severity rates and resultant high compensation and similar costs in this industry. Most tunnels are driven by contractors who bid for the jobs, taking into consideration the prevailing industrial insurance rates at the time the bids are placed. After the bid is secured the contractor then attempts to complete the job at the minimum cost to himself. In a sense the accident-cost item is fixed for at least one year when a policy is secured. Time is generally an important factor not only for the contractor, but also for the insurance carrier and the assured. If the assured represents a private interest, the cost burden usually is ultimately placed on the general public which avails itself of the service contemplated; if the project is a governmental enterprise the cost burden unquestionably falls upon the general public involved and on the general tax payer. For these reasons it is of vital interest to the public that accidents not only be kept at a minimum as a humanitarian objective, but also because the accident-cost burden, too frequently not even realized and considered to the degree that it should be, can assume proportions that materially affect the cost of the enterprise. The basic industrial insurance rate for tunneling in California in 1932 contemplated an earned premium of 12.12 percent of the labor pay roll. The State has been particularly engaged in large construction enterprises, some of which involve high accident cost rates, notably structural-steel bridge building, which contemplates an earned premium of 19.65 percent of the labor pay roll. When this figure is compared with the much lower rates that apply to other industries it is apparent that a heavy toll in human wreckage is taken by such engineering projects, which must be viewed as monuments to human suffering as veil as to human achievement.

A review of the practices of analyzing for precious metals at the Reno Research Center, U.S. Bureau of mines, is presented. A general description of fire assaying, the physical layout of a fire assay laboratory, and the use of fire assaying in combination with atomic absorption, induction coupled plasma, and emission spectroscopy is reviewed. The combination of techniques significantly decreases the detection limits for precious metal analyses and simplifies the analysis of the platinum-group metals. Methods of protecting personnel from ingestion of lead are also discussed.

After becoming an oil exporter in 1972, Ecuador experienced a remarkable economic upswing until 1978. However, in 1979 and 1980, a combination of only slight improvements in agricultural output and stagnating petroleum output lowered rates of real gross domestic product (GDP) expansion to 5.3% and 4.3%, respectively. In current prices, the GDP in 1980 was estimated at $11.3 billion.2 The slowdown in growth is attributable in large part to the low level of petroleum exploration in the 1972-79 period. Ecuador's production of petroleum declined 4.5% in 1980 compared with that of 1979. The consortium of Corporación Eatetal Petrolera Ecuatoriana (CEPS), the State oil company, and Texaco, Inc., operating in Ecuador's eastern jungle region was responsible for nearly all of 1980 production, The volume of total crude petroleum exports from Ecuador dropped from 44.7 million barrels in 1979 to 40 million barrels in 1980, although crude petroleum export revenues rose from $1,032 million in 1979 to $1,294 million in 1980- The latter figure represented 54% of Ecuador's 1980 merchandise exports. Crude oil exports accounted far about 46% of the value of 1979 merchandise exports. The total nonfuel mineral exports in 1980 were valued at less than $1 million.

Explosives have been fired electrically for several decades. Mountains have been tunneled, deep shafts sunk, extensive coal and metal mine workings excavated and, in times of war, railroads, buildings, bridges, and fortifications have been destroyed by means of electrically fired explosives. Modern engineering depends so much on explosives that their safe and efficient handling and especially their detonation are of prime importance to all those connected with the use of explosive agents. Electric shot-firing is only one method of igniting explosives, but it is rapidly spreading and because of certain inherent safety features should be encouraged. Data collected by the Bureau of Mines indicate that in the United States a large percentage of the blasting in quarries, shafts, and tunnels, and from 15 to 25 per cent of the blasts in mining operations, are set off electrically. The Bureau of Mines is interested in electric shot-firing because of its use in mining, and especially because electric methods, when properly applied, are undoubtedly safer than other methods commonly used.

THIS PUBLICATION is the third to be prepared as a result of a cooperative project by the Bureau of Ships and the Bureau of Mines for accumulating literature published on zirconium and hafnium. The undertaking also resulted in the establishment of an information center on zirconium and hafnium at the Bureau of Mines station at Albany, Oreg., for the use of research organizations and others. The present bibliography consists of references (with abstracts) to pertinent literature on zirconium. The first publication in this series was Information Circular 7771, Bibliography of Zirconium, published in April 1957. It consists of 969 abstracted reports and 645 U.S. and foreign patents. The second publication, called a supplement to Information Circular 7771, is numbered Information Circular 7830 and consists of 844 abstracted reports and 62 U.S. and foreign patents. It was published in October 1958.

In recent years the demand for products of greater refractoriness has placed an ever-increasing emphasis on ceramic materials, including the metallic oxides. Magnesia (MgO) is one of the most important of these oxides, exhibiting, as it does, high electrical resistivity, high slag resistance, and a melting point of 2,800° C. However, magnesia has a tendency to hydrate in the presence of water and to volatilize above 1,500° C. in certain kiln atmospheres and has a comparatively low resistance to thermal shock. Because of these disadvantages, the previously listed advantages inherent in this material have been largely overlooked, and research on magnesia has lagged behind that on oxides such as alumina and zirconia. This bibliography has been prepared in an effort to present to Government and industry a comprehensive picture of the prospects for greater utilization of magnesia as a refractory material in future research. To provide as selective and accurate a collection as possible, the references included cover magnesia in a pure state, not as an additive or in combination with other materials. However, several references discuss the effect of minor impurities (less than 5 percent of the total) on the properties of magnesia, as these papers are considered to be of special importance. A few references to articles on forming techniques are also included, as they are valuable additions to the overall treatment of the subject. The processes used in obtaining and refining the raw materials are adequately covered in earlier publications and are excluded. A number of references are omitted as being of questionable value in enhancing the cumulative study of pure magnesia as an ultra-high-temperature refractory material.

It deals with the physiological aspects of exposure to air contaminated by organic matter, noxious and toxic gases, and dusts that emanate from various sources in underground workings; part II will discuss the relation of abnormal mine temperatures and humidities to the health and efficiency of minors; and part III will describe theoretical and practical methods of air conditioning mines to correct or alleviate the conditions mentioned and will discuss the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various parts or the world.

This report describes operations at the Rosiclare Fluorspar Works of the Aluminum Co. of America at Rosiclare, Hardin County, Ill. The works include the Fairview mine, the fluorspar mill, and related facilities. The publication covers exploration, development, mining and milling practices, mine-drainage problems, and other activities and is presented as part of the Bureau of Mines series of publications on mining and milling practices in various parts of the United States. The Rosiclare fluorspar area, for its size, has been the largest producer of high-grade fluorspar in the United States and probably in the world. The vein system in this area is over 5 miles long and 1/2 mile wide, and ore has been found as deep as 900 ft.

The operation of electric face equipment in underground coal mines has proven to be extremely hazardous to mining personnel, including equipment operators and others working in the vicinity of active equipment. Recent industrial engineering studies* of accidents and fatalities indicate that a major contributor to this hazardous situation is noncompliance with modern principles of human engineering, particularly lack of standardization of control configurations. Control configurations differ not only among different machine types, but also among the same machine types produced by different manufacturers. This lack of standardization can produce a high incidence of error in the operation of electric face equipment, thus creating a potential source of accidents. Other examples of non-compliance with human engineering principles are the widespread use of identical black, round control knobs (regardless of the function being performed), and the inappropriate location, spacing, and labeling of controls. Any or all of these factors may place the operator in a "negative transfer" situation, which means that control manipulations appropriate for one type of machine are different from (or even the reverse of) the control movements required to produce the same effect on other machine types. This situation increases the accident potential to the operator, as well as to others in the vicinity. Accident potential is further increased by circumstances which do not allow for large error tolerance-specifically, emergency procedures. Reports of accident statistics cite operator inexperience as a primary cause of most accidents involving underground electric face equipment. Several factors contribute to operator inexperience, including: 1. High personnel turnover 2. Employee absenteeism 3. Current union practice of bidding for jobs.

This paper is one of a series on mining methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. It describes briefly mining practices at the Sunrise iron mine of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Corp., Platte County, Wyo. The Sunrise mine is in the Hartville iron district in east-central Wyoming (fig. 1). The district covers part of the Hartville Mountains, a region of moderate relief in which erosional features have been formed by the dissection of a low plateau. Altitudes vary from 4,300 feet along the North Platte River to 6,000 feet in the uplift. The climate is semiarid, with hot summers and winter temperatures below zero for short periods. Grasses, cacti, yucca, and low desert shrubs grow at lower elevations. Cottonwood and boxelder trees and willows grow along permanent streams; juniper and coniferous trees are confined to the higher elevations.

This report describes the linkage of all mining sectors with all other manufacturing, services, and final demand sectors of the U.S. economy. Besides being a basic data source, it provides a framework for aggregate economic impact analysis with respect to the mining industries. The framework is an open-static input-output model specifying 48 mining industries as classified in the Standard Industrial Classification Manual for all mining activities and 76 nonmining industries which collectively exhaust, all economic activities. The 124-sector model used in this report is an expansion of the preliminary 82-industry aggregation estimates made by the Department of Commerce. In the expanded model, 48 ruining industries are substituted for the original 6. The methodology used to ascertain the industry-by-industry procurement cost estimates and product ion flows necessary to the construction and expansion of the basic 82-sector model included personal interviews, case studies of specific mining activity analysis, and published and unpublished data from the Bureau of Mines and the Census of Mineral Industries, The end products of this study are two tables arranged to show the direct purchases necessary for each industry to support the level of economic activity and the total purchases generated in each industry throughout the economy by each $1 of aggregate economic demand in 1958. The tables may he used for economic impact studies and market analysis by firms engaged in or closely associated with the mining industries. Some illustrations of their usages are presented.

Most Japanese copper smelters are located in areas of concentrated industrial activity and high levels of atmospheric pollution. A review of unofficial sulfur dioxide emission control data from major Japanese smelters shows capture of 91 to 99.7 percent of the sulfur in the smelter feed. The bulk of Japanese smel ting capacity was constructed in the last 10 years. Six of the major sme lters use flash furnaces, and two use reverberatory furnaces. A prototype three-furnace continuous system is in use as a parallel train with reverberatory furnaces at one smelter. Most of the sulfur dioxide is manufactured into sulfuric acid. The remainder is captured by gas scrubbers that yield gypsum and sodium salts. Ready markets exist in Japan for the acid and other su lfur byproduc ts.
