The 1963 performance of the United States economy was impressive. The year was one of continued growth unmarred by a recession. By the end of 1963 the economy's expansion had already lasted almost as long as the 1954-57 upswing, and the net gain in output since the trough in activity in early 1961 compared favorably with most earlier postwar cyclical advances. There was no indication of any slow- down at yearend. Both gross national product (GNP) and national income in 1963 were 5 percent higher than in the previous year. GNP totaled $584 billion, a gain of $28 billion over 1962. Real output of goods and services rose 3.4 percent over the year. Price increases continued to be moderate. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all registered new but unemployment continued high at 5.5 percent and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to use its full potential. Current value of mineral production kept pace with the economy. The constant dollar value of mineral production gained more than real GNP because of the relatively stable price of minerals. Mining production achieved a new high in 1963. Steel production totaled 110 million tons, 12 million tons above 1962, making 1963 the first 100- million-ton year since 1957 and lifting the steel-associated minerals group upward. The gain in ferrous metals mining was insufficient to compensate for the decline of nonferrous metals mining resulting in an insignificant decline in the metal mining total as a whole. he stiffness characteristics of longwall shields were investigated in this Bureau of Mines study. Since longwall strata activity is characterized by roof-to-floor and face-to-waste displacements, a model with two degrees of freedom was used to describe the load-displacement relationship of the shield structure. The model considers the support as an elastic body and relates horizontal and vertical resultant forces acting on the support to associated displacements as a function of the stiffness of the support structure. Stiffness coefficients under full canopy and base contact configurations were determined by controlled displacement loading of longwall shields in the Bureau's Mine Roof Simulator (MRS). Three two-legged longwall shields of different manufacture were investigated. The stiffness characteristics of these shields were evaluated relative to two parameters, namely, shield height and setting pressure. The test results indicate a reduction in shield stiffness for increasing height. Setting pressure was found to have less of an effect on shield stiffness, producing only a slight increase in stiffness as setting pressure increased. Similar trends were observed for all three shields, indicating a similarity in stiffness characteristics for shields of the same basic configuration.

"Welfare endeavor in connection with both the metal and the coal mines of Utah has shown gratifying progress during recent years, and in most mining towns of the state, both the operators and their employees deserve much credit for the efforts put forth to better the living, working, educational and recreational conditions. Progress has been and is being made, but there are still a few important towns where purer water and better sewage disposal are pressing needs.In the older metal-mining towns that are incorporated and are independent of the mining properties operating in the vicinity, less opportunity is presented for the companies to exercise efforts looking toward improved welfare conditions than in company towns controlled by the mine operators.However, even in such towns the companies can do much to better welfare conditions, as shown by the progress in Bingham Canyon during the past several years. The Utah Copper Company has spent $800,000 since 1920, in the erection of modern brick cottages, apartment houses and the Germnell Memorial Club. The cottages and apartment houses have every convenience to be found in up-to-date city homes. The Gemmell Memorial Club erected and equipped at a cost of $175,000 was provided by the company for the benefit of the Utah Copper employees living in the canyon and has been made the recreational center for the camp. Another improvement is the $100,000 fireproof hotel built by the United States Mine of the United States Mining, Smelting and Refining; Co. in the Copperfield section of Bingham Canyon. This hotel will accommodate 105 men exclusive of hotel help and has all the conveniences of a city hotel."

"This paper is based data obtained by the Bureau of Mines from some of the principal mine operators in Pennsylvania, in the course of a study conducted in cooperation with the U. S. Forest Service, with regard to economies that might be effected in the selection storage, and preparations of timber particularly treatment with preservative to prolong its life.The Pennsylvania anthracite region, considered as a single mining district is by far the largest user of mine timber of any mining district, either coal or metal, in the United States, and the bituminous districts of Pennsylvania rank second. The present annual consumption of mine timber by the coal-mining industry of Pennsylvania probably exceeds 100,000,000 cubic feet annually.In 1919, Pennsylvania produced, in round figures, 145,300,000 tons of bituminous coal, 86,200,000 tons of anthracite, and 5,400,000 tons of iron ores. If it be assumed that the bituminous coal mines required 0.33 cubic feet, anthracite mines 0.7, and iron mines 0.9 cubic feet per ton mined the timber requirements were bituminous. 47,950,000; anthracite, 60,340,000; iron mines, 4,860,000 or a total of over 113,000,000 cubic feet.The average cost of round mine timber in the anthracite region in 1905, was, according to the U. S. Forest Service, 6.6 cents per cubic foot, and $15.00 per 1000 board feet for sawed timber. The present cost Las advanced to 27.5 cents per cubic foot for round timber, delivered to the mine, of which cost 57.4, represents freight charges."

Design, fabricate, and test a machine capable of operating in coal seams 48-inches and thicker that can reduce the time, expense, and injury potential inherent in extending and retracting mine-wide section belt conveyors, while eliminating the need to use additional machinery or equipment in accomplishing such moves. The Problem Many underground coal mines use a belt haulage system to move cut coal from the face to the loading area. This system usually consists of a main line belt conveyor fed by section belt conveyors. A shuttle car at the face carries the coal cut by a continuous mining machine to a feeder breaker that breaks the large lumps of coal into smaller, transport-able pieces and unloads them onto the tail piece of the section conveyor. This tail piece is skid-mounted so it can be readily moved as needed. The conveyor is kept close to the face during mining in order to shorten the haul distance of the shuttle cars. Section belts can be lengthened by adding belting, wire rope, and support hard-ware. During pillar retreat mining, these section belts are shortened to keep pace with pillar extraction operations. However, these belt moves, either the extensions or retractions, usually require six to eight workers and three to eight hours to complete. In addition, a 100-foot belt move requires workers to handle up to 4,000 lbs. of material, not including the tail section. Strain and sprain injuries can be incurred during this heavily labor-intensive task. The time required to move the section belt can also create losses in the mine's production. During 1984, minerals exploited in Burundi included gold, kaolin, lime, and peat. Over 1,100 troy ounces of gold was extracted and traded during the year as a result of the lifting of the Government ban on gold mining in mid-1983 and the establishment of an artisan mining program and licensed trading counters. Almost 2,000 tons of kaolin was mined for the manufacture of insecticides. Lime production was for domestic fertilizer applications. Amoco International and the Government signed an accord late in the year for a petroleum exploration program covering 600,000 acres of Burundi's onshore Ruzizi Plain and part of northeastern Lake Tanganyika. Amoco was expected to begin the exploration program by mid-1985. Anticipated program costs could run as high as $200 million.2 The Finnish company Ekono Oy completed its peat industrial energy development studies for the Buyongwe peat deposits of northern Burundi by the end of the year. The project assessed the quantity and fuel quality of 13,000 hectares of peatland and was part of a larger study for developing the Musangati lateritic nickel deposits of Burundi, estimated at 3% of the world's reserves of nickel. The Buyongwe peat would fuel dryers and an electrical generating plant for supplying power to nickel ore processing facilities. Briquetted peat would also be used as a substitute for wood and charcoal, presently the main sources of rural energy in the country and rapidly depleting because of deforestation. The study also evaluated the most economical methods to harvest the peat bogs. The study was financed by the International Development Association (IDA), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Finnish Aid-Finnida, and the Burundi Government.

Because economic and geographic factors have focused particular attention on the use of anthrafines in blends containing Lower Kittanning coal as the low-volatile component, samples from this particular bed were selected for experimentation whenever practical. Carbonizing tests were carried out in accordance with standard procedures, using the Tuscaloosa and sole-heated ovens. Most of the results are in general agreement with those reported by previous investigators. Specific findings are as follows: (1) The effectiveness of anthrafines in reducing coal expansion is such that even highly expanding, low-volatile coals can be carbonized safely with suitable additions of anthrafines and careful control of charge density. (2) Increases in coke size, resistance to shatter, and apparent specific gravity appear to be characteristic for additions up to approximately 15 percent to a fixed base blend. When anthracite of minus-48-mesh size was used and the proportion of low-volatile coal simultaneously increased, these indexes increased only slightly or remained substantially constant. (3) No increase in breeze formation was noted for additions in amounts up to 15 percent. (4) Abradability of coke was increased by additions of anthracite of No. 5 Buckwheat size, but it either decreased or remained sub¬stantially constant when the inert was ground to pass a 48-mesh screen.

"The Bureau of Mines investigated the presence and extent of methane accumulations in mine roof cavities using a full-scale mine model. Methane was released at a constant rate into the roof of a cavity built onto a 700-ft wind tunnel. Two box-shaped roof cavities were used in the study: one had a volume of 114.7 cu ft; and the other had a volume of 57.3 cu ft. Methane concentration was measured at 28 sampling points in the cavities using 21 different combinations of gas emission rates and air velocities. Brattice hung in the cavity helped reduce methane concentrations without auxiliary ventilation. It was also found that the effective ventilation rate increased by a factor of 40 in the large cavity and by a factor of 20 in the small cavity when air velocity was increased from 100 to 600 fpm.INTRODUCTIONAny location in a coal mine where 5 pct or more of methane is present constitutes a potential site for an explosion and roof cavities are likely locations. Unfortunately, little is known about the buildup of methane in roof cavities. Some research has been done using scale models where no air flows past the cavity so that methane disperses only by diffusion (5) 4 a rare situation in mines.No known cavity-model investigations have been made that simulate air and methane flow conditions normally encountered underground. These Bureau of Mines studies were undertaken to determine the extent and manner of methane buildups in coal mine roof cavities with air velocities in the range normally found in coal mines and with various methane emission rates."

Tills U.S. Bureau of Mines report briefly evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of basic dust control techniques presently used by U.S. coal preparation and mineral processing plants. These include ventilation, baghouse-type collectors, wet scrubbers, electrostatic precipitators, source control, sprays, good housekeeping, and personal protection devices. Two specific problems in these types of operations are also considered: dust collector system duct clogging, and control room dust control. Information provided in this report results from dust control research projects conducted by the Bureau at various coal preparation and mineral processing plants over the past decade to reduce workers' dust exposure. These studies indicate that plant ventilation systems normally provide the most cost effective method for dust control. Baghouses and scrubbers were also effective in specific applications, and examples of each are given. In extreme dust conditions, personal protection devices, such as respirators or the dust helmet, can also be highly cost effective.

One of the largest items in the expense of operating a refinery is the cost of the fuel used in distillation and for miscellaneous purposes such as in the heating of buildings and in the generation of electricity. On a B. t. u. basis, the average refinery consumes approximately one-tenth as much fuel as it produces. Theoretically, the fuel consumption at refineries should be much smaller than this, but furnaces can not be designed to be 100 per cent efficient and, in addition, a large part of the waste heat is low-temperature heat which would not pay for the expense of recovering it. Annual surveys of fuel consumption at refineries have been made by the United States Bureau of Mines, beginning with 1925. During the 5-year period, 1925-1929, the refineries made steady progress in fuel economy. This is evidenced by the computed figures of heat requirement per carrel of crude oil refined, which show a decline from 829,000 B. t. u. in 1925 to 639,000 B. t. u. in 1929 (see fig. 1). In 1930, however, 'the trend in fuel economy was reversed and the quantity of heat utilized in refining the average barrel of crude oil rose to 672,000 B. t. u. There were undoubtedly a number of reasons for the apparent decrease in fuel economy at refineries in 1930, chief of which were the tendency to carry the distillation farther instead of merely topping the crude and a gain in the consumption of waste oils, such as acid sludge, which in actual practice yield less heat per unit consumed than has been theoretically assigned to oil.

The effect of indium on the solid solubility of calcium and of silicon in magnesium was studied using metallographic, X-ray diffraction, and electrical resistivity techniques. The addition of 2 weight-percent or more of indium reduced the solid solubility of calcium in magnesium by forming a compound containing indium and calcium. Indium additions have no perceptible effect on the solid solubility of silicon in magnesium.

This information circular is a revision of I.C. 7238, Danger from Carbon Monoxide in the Home, by L. B. Berger and H. H. Schrenk, issued in April 1943. Each winter brings its toll of deaths and serious accidents from the deadly gas, carbon monoxide. Newspapers carry warnings to the public of the, dangers of this gas, and frequent news items report the finding of persons dead at unconscious from the effects of carbon monoxide, yet these accidents continue. Either these warnings are not read, or they are unheeded by people who feel that, "It can't happen to me." It can happen to you carbon monoxide is no respecter of persons.

This report describes a method of using sodium for reducing titanium tetrachloride, developed at Boulder City, Nev., as part of the Federal Bureau of Mines effort to improve the extractive metallurgy of titanium. Finely divided titanium metal, titanium lower chlorides, or a mixture thereof was produced in a continuous operation at temperatures between 105° and 205° C. by the reaction of molten sodium and vaporized titanium tetra-chloride in an agitated bed of finely divided inert solids (powdered sodium chloride or the reaction products). Composition of the product was controlled by varying the relative quantities of sodium and titanium tetrachloride used. A description of the operations and analytical data of the reaction products are given.

A pure scandium solution was concentrated from 10-4 mole per liter to 0.5 mole per liter by continuous foam fractionation in a spaced, packed column. Recovery in the foam was 77 percent using a spaced, packed draining column with sodium n-methyl-n-"coconut oil acid" taurate as the surfactant. The technique was first studied batchwise in a small unpacked column to determine the more important variables. Optimum surfactant concentration was found to depend on scandium concentration. Extraction and, in general, enrichment ratios were highest in the 2.5 to 3.5 pH range at temperatures ranging from 50° to 70° C. An airflow rate of 136 ml./min. was satisfactory in the equipment used.

This paper describes preliminary tests at the Bureau's Experimental Mine to determine, under conditions that may prevail in a bituminous coal-mine heading, how small a quantity of fire damp may bring coal-dust into suspension and ignite it. The results show that the explosion of as little as 150 cubic feet of an explosive mixture of gas and air containing 9 per cent natural gas may start a disastrous explosion of coal-dust. This is a very small volume, of gas, to cause such a result. Let us suppose that this amount of explosive mixture, as at the face of an entry which was 10 feet wide and the face was overcut to a depth of 6 feet and an upper layer of coal 2.5 feet thick had been removed, the recess so made would have a volume of 150 cubic feet. Furthermore, only 13 cubic feet of pure methane is needed in thin volume to produce this 9 per cent explosive mixture.

Equipment and procedure for the continuous roll bonding of metal strips are described. The reels, mill rolls, and furnace were located within a vacuum chamber capable of operation at a residual gas pressure of 1 x 10-4 to 1 x 10-5 torr. Several metals were successfully clad at rolling temperatures of 930° to 1,050° C in lengths up to 120 ft. The bimetals that were clad included stainless steel to carbon steel, molybdenum and nickel to stainless steel and carbon steel, and titanium to carbon steel. Bend tests of bond integrity are described, and microstructures of the interfaces are presented. The amounts of brittle intermetallic phases formed at the interface are minimized by this cladding method.

There is evidence to suggest that cell injury induced in alveolar macrophages (AM) following phagocytic activation by silica particles may be mediated through changes in intracellular free calcium [Ca 2+}. However, the mechanism of silicainduced cytotoxicity relative to [Ca2+], overloading is not yet clear. To provide a better insight into this mechanism, isolated rat AMs were exposed to varying concentrations of crystalline silica (particle size< 5 µm in diameter) and the fluctuation in their [Ca2+]; and cell integrity were quantitatively monitored with the fluorescent calcium probe, Fura-2 AM, and the membrane integrity indicator, propidium iodide (Pl). Results from this study indicate that silica can rapidly increase [Ca2+]; in a dose-dependent manner with a characteristic transient calcium rise at low doses (<0.1 mg/ml) and an elevated and sustained rise at high doses (>0.1 mg/ml). Depletion of extracellular calcium [Ca 2+]0 markedly inhibited the [Ca2+]; rise (˜90%), suggesting that Ca2+ influx from extracellular source is a major mechanism for silica-induced [Ca2+]; rise. When used at low doses but sufficient to cause a transient [Ca2+]; rise, silica did not cause significant increase in cellular Pl uptake during the time of study, suggesting the presevation of membrane integrity of AMs under these conditions. At high doses of silica, however, a marked increase in Pl nuclear fluorescence was observed. Depletion of [Ca 2+] 0 greatly inhibited cellular Pl uptake, induced by 0. 1 mg/ml or higher doses of silica. This suggests that Ca 2 + influx, as a result of silica activation, is associated with cell injury. Indeed, our results further demonstrated that the low dose effect of silica on Ca 2+ influx is inhibited by the Ca2+ channel blocker nifedipine. At high doses of silica (>0.1 mg/ml), cell injury was not prevented by nifedipine or extracellular Ca2+ depletion, suggesting that other cytotoxic mechanisms, i.e., nonspecific membrane damage due to lipid peroxidation, are also responsible for the silica-induced cell injury. Silica had no significant effect on cellular ATP content during the time course of the study, indicating that the observed silicainduced (Ca2 ... ); rise was not due to the impairment of Ca2 + -ATPase pumps, which restricts Ca2+ efflux. Pretreatment of the cells with cytochalasin B to block phagocytosis failed to prevent the effect of silica on [Ca2+]; rise. Taken together, these results suggest that the elevation of [Ca2+]; caused by silica is due mainly to Ca2+ influx through plasma membrane Ca2+,channels and nonspecific membrane damage (at high doses). Neither ATP depletion nor Ca2+ leakage during phagocytosis was attributed to the silica-induced [Ca2+]; rise.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Diesel Research Program emphasizes the development and evaluation of emission control devices to reduce exposure of miners to diesel exhaust pollutants. Studies by the USBM have shown that diesel exhaust aerosol (DEA) contributes a substantial portion of the respirable aerosol in underground coal mines using diesel equipment not equipped with emission controls. The USBM and the Donaldson Co., Inc., Minneapolis, MN, have developed a low-temperature, disposable diesel exhaust filter (DDEF) for use on permissible diesel haulage vehicles equipped with waterbath exhaust conditioners. These were evaluated in three underground, mines, to determine their effectiveness in reducing DEA concentrations. The DDEF reduced DEA concentrations from 70 to 90 pct at these mines. The usable life of the filter ranged from 10 to 32 h, depending on factors that affect DEA output, such &apos;as mine altitude, engine type, and duty-cycle. Cost per filter is approximately $40.
