A compressor and utility station, which is believed to be one of the largest mobile units of this type ever constructed, was placed in operation at the Bureau of Mines experimental oil-shale mine near Rifle, Colo., during. 1949. This mobile unit mounts two 770-cubic-feet-per-minute air compressors, a 2,500-gallon water tank, and a 200-cubic-foot air receiver. The mobile base of the unit is a 30-ton trailer 30-feet long and 12-feet wide. Prior to the construction of this unit, compressed air was supplied to underground workings through pipe lines connecting with a stationary compressor plant on the surface. The power consumed in supplying compressed air to underground drilling crews was 0.531 kw.-hr. per ton of shale broken. Use of the mobile unit has cut this figure to 0.421 kw.-hr. per ton of shale broken and, more important, has eliminated the cost of installing and maintaining underground air and water lines.

Aluminum alloys are used in two broad classifications: wrought and cast. Wrought alloy products, which are formed into final shape by rolling, forging, extruding. etc., contain low percentages of alloying elements; whereas cast aluminum products, which generally are not worked before use, may contain higher percentages and a somewhat different selection of alloying elements. For example, wrought aluminum alloys usually contain less than one percent silicon and cast alloys contain as much as 18 per-cent silicon. While there are good techniques available for separating aluminum alloys from mixed scrap, there are no efficient ways to separate wrought aluminum from cast aluminum. The high levels of silicon, iron) copper, and zinc from the cast alloys make wrought-cast mixtures unacceptable for wrought alloy production. Consequently, separated wrought aluminum scrap commands a premium price on the market. Since increasing amounts of mixed aluminum alloys are being recovered from automobile scrap, this separation is important for efficient recycling of these alloys. Approach The difference in thermo-mechanical properties between the two classes of aluminum alloys is used as the basis for the separation process. Casting alloys lose their ductility within a certain temperature range while wrought alloys remain ductile. As temperature increases, aluminum alloys gradually become weaker, and at a certain temperature, each alloy loses strength and ductility due to incipient melting in localized areas. For casting alloys that temperature generally lies between 520° to 560° C, but it is above 600° C for most wrought alloys. Mild crushing, therefore, in the proper temperature range will result in complete fragmentation of the casting alloys but only plastic deformation of the wrought alloys. A simple screening step then is used to separate the oversize wrought pieces from the fragmented cast alloys.

A new mining law for the Recublic of Polend was promulgated by presiden- tial decree dated November 29, 1930, published in the Journal of Lews (Dzienni stex) No. E, text 654, December E, 1530, and wes to become effective January 1, 1932, in all Polend except Silesie. Its adoption in Silesia wes dependent pon the action of the Silesian Diet. As the new law is considered an im- provement over the old Austrian Mining Lew, which is operative in the Silesian districts of Bielsk and Cieszyn, and the Prussian Kining Law, which is opera- tive in Upper Silesia, no delay in its adoption for Silesin was looked for. This new law codifies the various juridical regulations pertaining to ines existing in different parts of the Polish Republic but does not include legislation with respect to the extraction of minerel oil, especially crude oil. Petroleum legislation was postponed to a later date in order to facili- tate codification in other fields. Koreover, as the oil industry exists in Galicia elone, deley will not be detrimental.

Only limited work has been reported in the literature about the use of latex in soil. Unisol 91 2,3 (a 9:l oil-latex emulsion made b International Synthetic Rubber Company) and Phil1ips Petroset4 geotechnic emulsions are surface soil stabilizers which penetrate a maximum of two inches, but do not reduce permeability. Diamond Alkali 5 found that styrene-butadiene rubber latex as a one percent latex-soil mixture reduced permeability to 0.7 from 21 feet per year under a head of twenty feet of brine. We have found no literature reference for use of latex as sealant at depth in the soil, although asphalt has been applied at depth using civil engineering methods6,7. Most of the materials investigated as soil sealants in the present work were latexes, although some studies were also conducted with a variety of inorganic and organic chemicals. Of the latexes tested, most were rubber but a few were plastic, e.g. polyvinyl chloride. Sealants examined in this investigation are listed individually in Table I with supplier, code number, and other pertinent information. The materials consisted of the following general classes with additional details as indicated: 1.Anionic latexes: a. styrene-butadiene copolymers and terpolymers (SBR) b. butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer (Paracrils®) c. polyvinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers (WC) d. ethylene-propylene terpolymer e. vinyl acetate homopolymers and copolymers (VA) f. acrylics (acrylate copolymers) g. 2-chlorobutadiene homopolymer (chloroprene) (prepared specially as cationic material coagulated by soil). 2. Water Soluble polymers: a. polyvinyl ether b. methylcellulose c. polyethyleneimines d. polyacrylic acid homopolymer e. copolymers and terpolymers with acrylic acid types (water soluble as sodium or ammonium salts) f. alginates g. monomers (for polymerization in soil, e.g. acrylamide)

"The increase in tunneling operations that requires working under pressures greater than that of ordinary atmosphere has raised the question of the use and possible limitations of respiratory protective devices under such unusual conditions. As little, if any, information is available, there is need for a comprehensive study of this subject before specific recommendations can be made. In the absence of such data it seems desirable to make a few preliminary observations regarding the problems associated with wearing respiratory protective devices under increased air pressures.Two distinct problems must be considered--the mechanics of the apparatus used under such conditions and the physiological effects of increased pressures on wearers of respiratory apparatus. The purpose of this investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines was to design and construct a fluorescent X-ray spectrograph for dynamic rate studies of selective oxidation in molten metals and to establish basic principles for interpretation of data obtained by this method. An X-ray spectrograph was constructed in which the sample holder is a resistance wound furnace; it was operated up to 800° C. in oxidizing atmospheres. No difficulties were experienced with the cooling or heating systems nor with the protective layer of mica around the X-ray tube window, even though the oxidizing surface of the metal is only 0.5 inch from the X-ray tube window, Means are provided for heating under controlled atmospheres for selected time? temperature cycles.

The systems MgO-MgFa-SiO2, at 2 and 4 weight-percent Li2O and at 3.8 and 7.7 weight-percent Na2O were investigated by solid state reaction at 1,200° C. The results are summarized in four ternary diagrams. Besides the expected humites and simpler silicates or fluorides, proto-amphibole and water-swelling fluormicas or fluormontmorillonoids were found in the systems containing lithium and monoclinic fluoramphiboles, water-swelling fluormicas or fluormont-morillonoids, and nonwater-swelling fluormicas were found in the systems containing sodium. These latter compounds were not in the base system MgO-MgF2-SiO2.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes a viewing transformation algorithm that generates a perspective view of a three-dimensional scene. This tool may be used by researchers to improve mine safety by assessing the visual capabilities of a mobile equipment operator. Three-dimensional transformations used to build the viewing transformation and techniques used to project the image onto a two-dimensional display screen are defined. The algorithm is written in the C-programming language and designed to stress portability, allowing it to work without significant modifications on numerous computers. A listing of the computer routines along with sample output is included in the report.

Preparation of high-purity magnesium-yttrium alloys by electroreduction of Y2O3 dissolved in a YF3-LiF bath and the subsequent deposition of yttrium in a molten magnesium cathode was investigated in laboratory-scale apparatus. Parameters such as temperature, current density, and electrolyte density were studied. Electrolysis was conducted in a specially designed MgO diaphragm cell at temperatures ranging from 780° to 970° C. Alloys containing up to 55 weight-percent yttrium were prepared at cathode current efficiencies of 21 to 60 percent. Cell design and operation are described, and some of the limiting conditions pertaining to the method are discussed.

"A study is presently underway by the authors to investigate the character of the bit-coal interaction during coal cutting and its influence on the size and shape distributions of the generated dust. An important aspect of this on-going project is the development of acoustic emission (AE) criteria which would make it possible to carry out remote monitoring of coal cutting operations. The on-going AE studies are fundamental in form and were undertaken to evaluate the general feasibility of AE monitoring techniques using simplified coal breakage and cutting procedures. The present paper will focus on the test facilities, experimental techniques, and results associated with linear, single-bit cutting. An AE-transducer, attached directly to the bit, detected AE signals during the cutting process.Experiments have been carried out on seven specimens of coal obtained from the USBM experimental mine at Bruceton, Pennsylvania. Three separate cuts were made for each of two bit angles (10 and 45 degrees) and two bit velocities (0.085 and 0.169 cm/sec), for a total of 12 separate cuts. Data associated with resulting particle size distribution and AE characteristics (major dominant frequency components) will be discussed. Data analysis has also been underway using a computer-based pattern recognition system known as ICEPAK (Intelligent Classifier Engineering Package). This program is able to evaluate over 100 features of an AE event and to make objective comparisons between AE signals associated with different loading or cutting parameters. The results to date show that AE generated during some of the test conditions can be recognized by ICEPAK with a recognition rate of 90% and higher while other conditions cannot at present be separated with a suitable recognition rate. Further analysis of the experimental data is presently underway.The reduction of the severity, and eventual elimination, of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) depends on gaining fundamental understanding in a number of major areas. These include dust generation and entrainment, transportation, suppression, medical effects of dust, and possible treatment. At present a project is underway by the authors to investigate the character of the bit-coal interaction during coal cutting and its influence on the size and shape distributions of the generated dust. An important aspect of this on-going project is the development of acoustic emission (AE) criteria which would make it possible to carry out remote monitoring of coal cutting operations. Suitable on-line analysis of monitored AE data would allow engineers to evaluate factors such as shearer bit conditions and cutting efficiency, and to quantify the particle size and shape distribution of the generateddust. The on-going AE studies are fundamental in form and were undertaken to evaluate the general feasibility of AE monitoring techniques using simplified coal cutting procedures. To date experiments have been carried out on coal under uniaxial compression, linear single-bit cutting, and cutting using a laboratory-scale, single-bit shearer. A brief outline of the overall study has been presented in an earlier paper (Hardy, Shen and Kimble, 1995). This paper will consider the linear single-bit cutting studies in more detail.It is generally accepted today that most solids emit low-level seismic signals when they are stressed or deformed. In this paper this phenomenon will be referred to as acoustic emission (Hardy 1972, 1981, 1989). In essence, the measurement of AE activity in a field or laboratory structure is relatively simple. A suitable transducer is attached to the structure, the output of the transducer is connected to an associated monitoring system, and the AE signals occurring in the structure, due to internal or external stress, deformation, and failure are suitably acquired, pre¬processed and recorded."

The Bureau of Mines believes that all coal mines are potentially gassy; for the purpose of administration in the prevention of explosions and fires, the Bureau recommends: That any coal mine wherein methane or other combustible gas can be detected in amounts as much as 0.27 of 1 percent or more by frequent systematic searches shall be classified as a gassy mine. Permissible methane-indicating detectors such as are given in I.C. 7110 or subsequent lists of Bureau approved methane-indicating detectors, or conventional methods of sampling and analysis of required accuracy may be used. The concentration referred to in the decision is percent by volume.

Considerable need exists to devote more attention to: (A) Hydrogeologic studies of mining areas to enhance the planning of new mines and the abatement program of existing mines. (B) Additional research to explore methods of dewatering the strata associated with mining areas. "INTRODUCTIONOrganics extractable from respirable diesel exhaust soot particles by organic solvents have been known for some time to be direct acting frameshift mutagens in the Ames Salmonella typhimurium histidine reversion assay (Huisingh, et al). Upon deposition in a pulmonary alveolus or respiratory bronchiole, respirable diesel soot particles will contact first the hypophase which is coated by and laden with surfactants. To model interactions of soot and pulmonary surfactant, we dispersed soots in vitro in the primary phospholipid pulmonary surfactant dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine (lecithin) (DPL) in physiological saline. We have shown that diesel soots dispersed in lecithin surfactant can express mutagenic activity, in the Ames assay system using S. typhimurium TA98, comparable to that expressed by equal amounts of soot extracted by dichloromethane/ dimethylsulfoxide (DCM/DMSO)(Wallace, et al, 1987). Here we report additional data on the same system using additional exhaust soots and also using two other phospholipids, dipalmitoyl glycerophosphoryl ethanolamine (DPPE), and dipalmitoyl phosphatidic acid (DPPA), with different ionic character hydrophilic moieties. A preliminary study of the surfactant dispersed soot in an eucaryotic cell test system also is reported.MATERIALS AND METHODSSoots D4 and D6 were collected at two different times as scrapings from the exhaust pipe of a diesel tractor-trailer immediately after the engine was stopped. Surfactant dispersions were made by ultrasonic probe sonicating 25 mg of commercially obtained DPL, DPPE, or DPPA into 1O ml of O.85% physiological sterile saline (PSS) for 10 min at 40 watts power. For surfactant dispersions, 2.5 mg soot was mixed into 2.5 ml of the appropriate phospholipid dispersion. Mixtures were sonicated by 40 watts sonicator probe for one min, then incubated in the sonicator water bath for 30 min at room temperature; the mixture was then incubated for one hour at 37C while being rotated continuously. Dilution series were made with saline. For solvent extraction, 2.5 mg soot was mixed into 2.5 ml of DCM and incubated in a sonicator water bath for 30 min at room temperature. The sample was then mixed with 2.7 ml DMSO, placed in a dry bath at 45C, and the DCM evaporated under a stream of nitrogen gas until 2.5 ml of liquid remained. Ames salmonella/microsome assay utilizing TA98 for frameshift mutation was used for mutagenicity testing, with and without S9 activation, as described by Ames et al (1975). Unfiltered sample extractions or dispersions were preincubated with tester cells for 90 min at 37C : 0.1 ml of sample was mixed with 0.5 ml of PSS, or of S9 mixture, and 0.1 ml of an overnight TA98 culture incubated samples were then added to 2 ml of top agar supplemented with biotin and a trace amount of histidine, and overlayed onto Vogel-Bonner minimal media plates. After 48 hours incubation at 37C, revertant colonies were counted. Solvent controls were DMSO, DPL, DPPE, DPPA, and saline. Positive controls were trinitrofluorenone (1 ug/plate), for samples not treated with S9, and 2-aminoanthracene for S9 treated samples (2.5 ug/plate). All samples were assayed in duplicate. Sister chromatid exchange (SCE) assay was performed, following Lett, et al (1981), using V79 cells, of Chinese hamster pulmonary fibroblast origin. Stock diesel sample suspensions were made as 10 mg soot/ml DPL suspension, or 20 mg soot/ml in DMSO. Aliquots of these soot preparations were added to 15 ml of culture medium per sample flask to result in concentrations of 25, 50, and 75 ug soot/ml medium. After 12 hours incubation, 200 ul of 25 uM 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was added to each flask. After another 35 hours incubation, 200 ul of 10 ug/ml colcemid were added; and the cells were harvested three hours later. Cells were swollen by hypotonic saline, and fixed twice with methanol/acetic acid, and burst on microscope slides. Cells on the slide were stained with Hoechst 33258, exp"

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated a hydrochloric (HC1)-calcium fluoride (CaF2) leaching procedure to treat domestic manganese (Mn)-bearing silicate resources. The proposed process is an alternative to high-temperature and energy-intensive extractive techniques. Single-stage leaching with a stoichiometric amount of HCl and a F-Mn mole ratio of 0.2 extracted 96 pct of the Mn when the leach conditions were 50° C, 3 h, and 35 pct solids. Ninety-eight percent of the Mn was extracted during countercurrent leaching at similar conditions. A process flowsheet was developed that incorporated HC1-Cab leaching, excess leach acid utilization, fluoride (F) recycle, and Mn recovery. When the domestic manganese silicate ore was processed, 98 pct of the Mn was extracted, 99 pct of the Cab was reclaimed, and a leach residue was produced that passed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Extraction Procedure (EP) Test for nonhazardous waste.

A tube-wall reactor with a Raney nickel catalyst deposited on the outer wall of the tube by flame spraying is effective in the practically complete conversion of 3H2+1CO synthesis gas to a high-Btu gas (methane) at an hourly space velocity of 7,000 volumes of gas (NTP) per hour per volume of annular volume. Partially reacted synthesis gas containing an appreciable amount of methane can also be treated in this reactor to increase the heating value to over 900 Btu per cubic foot. Excellent heat removal through the metal wall to a coolant and temperature control were obtained. The heat transfer co-efficient from the catalyst to the coolant was about 275 Btu per hour per square foot per ° F. Synthesis tests were conducted with tubes 1.2 inches in ad by 6 inches long, and 1.3 inches in od by 36 inches long. When operating at a synthesis gas rate of 100 to 120 scfh per square foot of catalyst-coated tube, catalyst life was long enough to realize a catalyst cost for the raw Raney nickel alloy of about 0.3 cent per 1,000 cubic feet of pipeline gas (900 to 950 Btu per scf). Gas recycling at ratios of 1:1 to 3:1 was effective in increasing conversion and in extending the life of the catalyst to about 16 weeks. In cost and in operating characteristics the tube-wall reactor compares favorably with the fluidized-bed and hot-gas-recycle reactor systems for the synthesis of high-Btu gas from H2+CO.
