A chemical method of determining microgram quantities of arsenic in coal was investigated by the Bureau of Mines to supplement a semiquantitative spectrographic method of determining arsenic in coal ash. In accordance with a method recommended by the International Organization for Standardization, 1-gram samples of coal are decomposed by wet oxidation with boiling sulfuric acid (H2S04) and nitric acid (HN03) to remove the organic matter. After heating to fumes of SO3 to remove HN03, the arsenic is separated as arsine by the action of zinc in H2S04 solution. The arsine is absorbed in dilute iodine solution in which the arsenic is determined colorimetrically by the molybdenum-blue reaction. Two modifications of the method for obtaining the arsenic in solution, in addition to the wet oxidation method, give satisfactory results. The modifications are (1) furnace ashing with MgO added to the coal, followed by treatment with H2S04, and (2) extraction of arsenic from the coal by dilute HNO3 without ashing. Float-and sink-tests show that arsenic is associated mainly with mineral matter in the three coals examined. High-temperature ashing tests show that very little arsenic is volatilized from coal ash below 1,000° C, but it is virtually all removed from the ash at 1,300° C.

Develop computer software that can aid in improving the visibility and illumination in underground mines by providing quick analysis of existing equipment and conditions and the effects of potential modifications. Background Poor visibility and illumination are common problems in underground mining. Mining equipment often restricts operators' fields of vision. Also, fighting systems are often positioned where they cause excessive glare, which restricts the visibility around the machines even further. To help address these problems, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed a PC-based software package to analyze certain human engineering aspects (ergonomics) of mining equipment design. The software is available for use by equipment manufacturers and mining companies for design work on new machines, as well as for evaluating proposed modifications to existing machines. Approach The Crewstation Analysis Programs (CAP) package includes assessments of visibility, illumination, and glare in the surrounding work area. The advantage of using computers for these types of analyses is that numerous design iterations can be tested quickly and efficiently to determine the effects of changes on visibility. This cuts down the need for expensive testing using physical mockups. Another advantage is that design ideas can be tested in situations where testing would not normally be possible. For instance, the effects of modifications to a lighting system or canopy design could be tested while the machine remained in service.

This Part is concerned with the theoretical study of UHF radio communication in coal mines, with particular reference to the rate of loss of signal strength along a tunnel, and from one tunnel to another around a corner. Of prime interest are the nature of the propagation mechanism and the prediction of the radio frequency which propagates with the smallest loss. Our theoretical results are compared with measurements made by Collins Radio Co. This work was conducted as part of the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center's investigation of new ways to reach and extend two-way communications to the key individuals that are highly mobile within the sections and haulage ways of coal mines.

"The Bureau of Mines, in its investigations of as masks for use in mines and allied industries tests masks that are voluntarily submitted by manufacturers for examination, and issues approval certificates for masks that meet the bureau's specifications. This paper describes the tests that were conducted on an ammonia gas mask by the Bureau of Mines, which successfully met all requirements and tests for ammonia, masks. The mask tested, known as the GMD ammonia gas mask, is manufactured by the Mine Safety Appliances Co., Pittsburgh, Pa. This ammonia gas mask, which forms a pocket over the face and allows breathing through the nose, consists of a face-piece with non-shatter eyeglasses; this is attached by means of a corrugated rubber tube to a canister supported on wearer's chest by a harness. The canister is green in color and is of tinplate construction. It was a disc valve at the bottom to prevent exhalation through the canister. The filling of the canister consists of a specially impregnated activated charcoal, about 750 c.c. in volume and weighing about 520 grunn. The material is supported above the check valve by a dome of wire screen covered with toweling. Above the granular material is a filter of absorbent cotton screens, and all materials are hold firmly in place by pressure from strong"

A new post-disaster signalling system for the Bureau o Mines, using through-the-earth EM propagation, was successfully field-tested in the Lake Lynn test mine. Successful detection at an estimated input SNR of -30dB was accomplished using a coherent integration time of 4.46 minutes. The transmitted waveform consisted of a repeating pseudonoise maximal length sequence phase modulating a 1950Hz carrier. The receiver used a sliding-window matched filter, optimal for signal known exactly except for phase and starting time, implemented via a special purpose processor. Parallel processing permits adaptive signalling, where the detection (integration) time is determined by the actual input SNR encountered. This field test demonstrates a trapped miner detection system that is about 36dB more sensitive than a current pulsed system. This increased sensitivity permits some desired combination of increased range, shorter detection time, and reduced transmitter power or antenna-size. The combination of pulse-compression-type-signal, coherent integration, parallel-processing, and output peak-detection algorithms permit implemention of an ultra-reliable detection system. The same combination is compatible with digital Pulse Position Modulation and Emitter position location strategies.

This paper describes a gas-transport method for measuring vapor pressures of liquid metals. Vapor pressures of iron and nickel were determined at temperatures between 1,540° and 1,620° C. The results can be represented by the following equations: log Pmm (iron) -19,460/T + 9.147, log Pmm (nickel) -2l,030/T + 9.689. The study was undertaken as part of a program to determine thermodynamic activities in liquid iron alloys.

The Bureau of Mines measured the vapor pressures of selected mixtures in the binary systems CdCl2 ?SnCl2, CdCl2 -ZnC12, PbCl2 ?SnCl2, and PbCl2 -ZnCl2 by the static pressure method. These data were evaluated by the second-law (sigma-plot) method. Equations expressing the vapor pressures and the heats and free energies of vaporization as functions of temperature are given.

Provide reliable, early-warning fire detection instruments, telemetry, and control systems for noncoal underground mines. Approach Industrial-grade fire detection instruments and signal telemetry equipment were modified for long-term exposure to harsh underground mine conditions, then were installed in four mines to evaluate long-term performance and reliability. How It Works The elapsed time between the onset of a fire and its detection is critical because fires tend to grow in size and intensity with time. Early fire detection and warning permit the initiation of a mine's emergency plan (evacuation, fire fighting, etc.) while the fire is still small, or ideally, while it is still in the incipient stage. Fire detection and warning systems, utilizing sensitive heat, flame, smoke, and gas analyzers, provide the most rapid and reliable indication of a developing fire.

PURPOSE This report provides an integrative review of 52 recently published research reports that examine the associations between long working hours and illnesses, injuries, health behaviors, and performance. The report is restricted to a description of the findings and methods and is not intended as an exhaustive discussion of all important issues related to long working hours. Findings and methods are summarized as reported by the original authors, and the study methods are not critically evaluated for quality. SUMMARY In 16 of 22 studies addressing general health effects, overtime was associated with poorer perceived general health, increased injury rates, more illnesses, or increased mortality. One meta-analysis of long work hours suggested a possible weak relationship with preterm birth. Overtime was associated with unhealthy weight gain in two studies, increased alcohol use in two of three studies, increased smoking in one of two studies, and poorer neuropsychological test performance in one study. Some reports did not support this trend, finding no relationship between long work hours and leisure-time physical activity (two of three studies) and no relationship with drug abuse (one study). A pattern of deteriorating performance on psycho physiological tests as well as injuries while working long hours was observed across study findings, particularly with very long shifts and when 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work a week. Four studies that focused on effects during extended shifts reported that the9thto 12th hours of work were associated with feelings of decreased alertness and increased fatigue, lower cognitive function, declines in vigilance on task measures, and increased injuries. Two studies examining physicians who worked very long shifts reported deterioration on various measures of cognitive performance. When 12-hour shifts combined with other work-related demands, a pattern of more adverse findings was detected across studies. Six studies examining 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work per week reported increases in health complaints, deterioration in performance, or slower pace of work. Two studies com-paring 8- and 12-hour schedules during day and night shifts reported that 12-hour night shifts were associated with more physical fatigue, smoking, or alcohol use. Two studies examining start times for 12-hour shifts reported that decrements in alertness or more health complaints were associated with early 6:00 a.m. start times. One study examining 12-hour shifts in hot work environments reported a slower pace of work as compared with shorter shifts. Another study examining high workloads during 12-hour shifts showed increased discomfort and deterioration in performance as compared with shorter shifts. More definitive statements about differences between 8-hour and 12-hour shifts are difficult because of the inconsistencies in the types of work schedules examined across studies. Work schedules differed by the time of day (i.e., day, evening, night), fixed versus rotating schedules, speed of rotation, direction of rotation, number of hours worked per week, number of consecutive days worked, number of rest days, and number of weekends off. All of these factors could have interacted with overtime and influenced study results. This report presents a discussion of the spectra of 39 condensed thiophenes in which the structure includes at least 1 benzene ring. The vibrational bands present in three regions of the infrared spectra of these thiophenes were interpreted by comparing the similarities of the spectra of condensed thiophenes with the spectra of substituted benzenes. In the overtone-combination region 23 of the 39 condensed thiophenes had spectra which contained sufficient detail to be usable for correlating this region of the spectrum with the appropriate benzene spectrum. In the in-plane deformation region it was possible to make correlations for the vibrations of 18 of the 39 condensed thiophenes whose infrared spectra were studied. In the out-of-plane deformation region the C-H out-of-plane vibrations for hydrogen on benzene rings in the condensed thiophenes can be correlated using known data from substituted benzenes.

Experiments were made with a batch reactor to determine the effect of gas pressures, temperature, and gamma radiation intensity on the reaction CO + Ch ? COC12. The equation, [dp = 0.0110 (1 - 0.01t) (PCOI)1/2 PC12] where [dP] is the change of pressure of phosgene with time (atm/hr), t is the temperature (°C), PCO and PC12 are the reactant pressures (atm), and I is the radiation intensity (r/hr), was found to best fit the data. Oxygen and a large ratio of reactor surface to volume retarded the reaction, but inert gases had no effect. A low-temperature reactor system is proposed to take advantage of the conditions which give a high reaction rate with gamma radiation and a simple scheme of product purification.

"INTRODUCTION One of the major activities of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and the mineral industries. Research is undertaken in connection with these problems to determine the explosion and ignition hazards of combustible gases, liquids, and solids and to investigate means of reducing them.Occasionally the Bureau is asked to determine inflammability or ignition temperatures to enhance safety in nonrnineral industries. From time to time it has complied with such requests when no other agency was available to do the work and the investigation could be conducted with a minimum of time and expense. The present investigation is one of this class.Nicotine (C10H14N2), a colorless combustible liquid having a boiling point of 246°C, is usually obtained from tobacco and its products by extraction processes. When heated to its boiling point it decomposes; the purified product is obtained from tobacco extractions by distillation at reduced pressures or is distilled in a current of inert gas.It has an unpleasant odor, a burning taste, and in the undiluted state is highly toxic. Under certain conditions it can be oxidised to nicotinic acid and in the near future may therefore become of considerable economic importance. Nicotinic acid is a component of the vitamin B complex now commonly used to fortify white flour and other foods that normally are deficient in these vitamins."

Renewed interest in the underground gasification of coal evolves from comprehensive studies of earth fracture systems that indicate that the movement of fluids can be controlled in the coalbed. In particular, directional property studies of natural microfissure occurrence, permeability, ultrasonic velocity, tensile strength, and orientation of intervals of inherent rock weakness, together with geologic structure setting and fracture trace analysis, can predict the gaseous flow paths in the coalbed. Having this information, the dominant direction in which gases generated and/or liberated by heat would move can be determined so that appropriate well patterns can be developed. Together with advances made in drilling technology that permit long horizontal holes to be drilled through the coal seams, tests can be conducted to determine whether directional control will permit devolatilization of the coalbed and gasification of the remaining hot coke in a systematic manner to produce a low-Btu gas suited for the generation of electricity.

"INTRODUCTION Organizations formed for the purpose of conducting conservation work in oil fields, in order to conserve and prolong the supply of crude petroleum are rare and novel. Such an organization is the Rocky Mountain Petroleum Association, Denver, Colo, As our production of petroleum can no longer keep with the consumption, the plan of organization, character of work, and results obtained by this association are well worth considering. It is hoped that the results achieved in the Wyoming fields will serve to stimulate similar organizations among operators in the state or other oil fields of the United States, The Rocky Mountain Petroleum Association, Danvers Colo., was formed in May, 1919. It comprises the Midwest Refining Co,. The Ohio Oil Co., and the Continental Oil Co. These three companies entered into a cooperative agree¬ment with the Federal Bureau of Mines whereby $30,000 would be spent under the direction of the bureau, which agreed to furnish competent men, and to furnish the work and expenditure of funds. Although the financial burden for the first year's work, now drawing o a close, was carried by only three companies, they stipulated their desire that the benefit of the work should accrue to the industry, and that the personnel employed should be as zealous to assist one operator as another, without regard to whether ha was contributing to the support of the work or not."

High-purity lanthanum metal was prepared by electrolysis of La003 in a LaF3-LiF-BaF2 bath at 950° C. The requisite bath temperature for the deposition of molten metal was maintained by supplying the heat as current directly to the electrodes. A current efficiency of about 60 percent was obtained. The lanthanum nodules contained carbon and oxygen as major impurities. The total impurity content was from about 0.1 to 0.2 percent.

No experimental heat-of-formation value has been reported in the literature for cerium sesquioxide. The heat of formation of bismuth sesquioxide has not been determined in recent years, and the older value was subject to large uncertainty. Accordingly, the heats of combustion of cerium sesquioxide and bismuth metal were measured by the Federal Bureau of Mines. The heats of formation were: ?H°298.15 = -427.01 ± 0.70 kcal. /mole for cerium sesquioxide and ?H°298.15 = -137.16 ± 0.30 kcal./mole for bismuth sesquioxide. The free energy of formation was estimated for cerium sesquioxide and accurately calculated for bismuth sesquioxide. The data were compared with values in the literature.

"INTRODUCTION Two holes were drilled on the G. S. Stiner zinc prospect, in the Lead Mine Bend area of Union County, Tenn. The holes were drilled in the vicinity of an area of gossan float and were bottomed in the Maynardville formation of the Nolichucky shale. Drilling was started January 24 and completed February 16, 1947. The total footage drilled was 421.2 feet.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, does the actual investigative Work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, Cliver C. Ralston, chief, analyzes samples and makes beneficiation tests.The project was under the general supervision of Mitchell H. Kline, chief, Raleigh Division, Mining Branch, Raleigh, N. C.LOCATION AND ACCESSIBILITYThe prospect is located approximately 20.5 miles southwest of Tazewell, Tenn. It is reached from Tazewell by driving 13.8 miles southwest on State route 33, thence 6.8 miles over graveled roads in a northwesterly direction to Stiner's general store. The drill holes are located in the bottom land northeast of the store (fig. 1 and 2)."
