In recent times, the transportation of minerals and their tailings has become a major concern across the world. There exists a huge demand of efficient and cost effective transportation system which poses minimum environmental damage. One of the economically and environmentally viable techniques which potentially offer a solution to the above problem includes transportation of minerals and their tailings in the slurry form through pipelines. Slurry transportation through pipelines is reported to be more beneficial in terms of cost, environmental impact, maintenance and safety when compared with other conventional modes of bulk transportation such as train, truck, barge and conveyors. The main challange associated with hydraulic transportation of slurries is to obtain a non-settled slurry and to design a pipeline system which results in the optimum energy requirement for transporting a large throughput to longer distances at a lower cost. The feasibility of hydraulic transportation of slurries through pipes mainly depends upon slurry properties and flow conditions in the pipe. Results from rheological studies exhibit the presence of shear thinning flow behaviour of minerals and their tailings in water. The flow behaviour index (n) and consistency coefficient (k) obtained from the rheological analysis are further used for the specific energy consumption and energy losses during transportation. The cost of transportation in USD per ton per 100 km and transport capacity in tons per day are calculated from the specific energy consumption to transport these slurries. The results demonstrate that the slurries can be transported to long distances (say, 100 km or more) corresponding to optimum energy consumption and dissipation rate at a substantially cheaper cost than the existing rail and road transport in India. Although we have carried out transportation studies with coal fly ash (CFA), lignite & bauxite slurries, for paucity of space, the results reported here are essentially for CFA slurries. Details of our investigations with lignite coal & bauxite will be reported seperately.

Marble wastes are generated by quarries (marble quarry waste-MQW) and processing plants (marble cutting waste-MCW). The large amount of marble wastes is becoming serious problem for industry and environment because of discarded into rivers and lagoons, without any treatment. Marble wastes can cause environmental problem and economic loss if the waste is not used. However, this type of wastes has a good potential to be used as an amendment for the neutralization of acid soils. In this study, MQW and MCW were applied to an acid soil at different rates and their effectiveness on neutralization was evaluated by a laboratory incubation test. The results showed that soil pH increased from 4.71 to 6.36 and 6.84 by applications of MCW and MQW, respectively. It was suggested that MQW and MCW could be used as soil amendments for the neutralization of acid soils, and thus the negative impact of marble wastes on the environment could be reduced.

For the moment reserves of high-grade ores are practically depleted requiring ever-increased involvement of low assay raw materials, such as black-shale ores, in industrial operations. Black-shale ores are constituted of minerals containing such valuable components as vanadium, uranium, molybdenum, manganese, and rare-earth elements (REE). We studied technogenic solutions of black-shale ores processing, after uranium, molybdenum, and vanadium were recovered. Mentioned solutions contain rare-earth elements in substantial quantities (S REE 70-100 mg/dm3) that is very important factor taking into consideration the world demand ever-increasing last years. Higher concentrations of iron and aluminum inhibiting REE sorption and extraction recovery are found in solutions. We propose a method of hydrolytic deposition to cleaning solutions from impurity elements (Fe, Al). Study of hydrolytic deposition kinetics allowed identifying optimal conditions to run this process. Rare-earth elements may be recovered from purified solutions through sorption process followed by their further deposition from eluates in form of concentrates. "Most SAG grinding operations currently use ball sizes between 5.5 and 6 inch maximum size. However, in most cases the use of this ball sizes hasn’t been justified by a phenomenological analysis of the real effect on the grinding process, but rather by trial and error. The analysis of the influence of ball sizes in SAG grinding hasn’t been developed in detail by considering the effect on process parameters inside the mill, grinding efficiency or internal classification. Historically a conventional grinding reference has been made on the empirical procedure developed by Azzaroni (1980). Further to Azzaroni’s methodology, Sepulveda (Sepúlveda, 2007) developed the SPEC methodology, incorporating the ball size effect on the grinding efficiency parameters using a population balance model included on Molycop tools spreadsheets.This paper demonstrates a detailed analysis at pilot scale of the ball size employed in SAG grinding and scaling that exists between the different levels. This analysis includes assessing the effect of balls sizes on parameters associated with grinding efficiency and its effect on the total fill level, product size distribution and specific energy consumption, among others. In a complementary way it develops a technical - economical evaluation from industrial data comparing two different ball sizes and its effect on the grinding process analysed integrally."

The quality of iron ore fines in terms of high iron content and low levels of deleterious impurities such as Silica, Alumina, Sulphur and Phosphorous is a critical parameter, in sintering and subsequent iron and steel making processes. As the higher-grade ores become depleted, there will be a stronger focus on treating lower-grade haematite/goethite ores and developing suitable beneficiation techniques to reduce the levels of impurities. Innovative flow sheets, based on new and commercially available technologies, is required. These will be needed to include gravity concentration devices, which can handle coarse and fine feed sizes. In this paper, efforts made to reduce the silica and alumina content of a low grade iron ore fines (<1.0 mm size) sample from the Pilbara region in Western Australia are described. The feed sample, a goethite abundant lower grade iron ore fines, which was a plant reject assaying 48.66% Fe with 13.61% SiO2and 5.09% Al2O3 was investigated. To this end, an experimental campaign was undertaken, and beneficiation studies were conducted on the sample using a Floatex Density Separator (FDS), a gravity device which can be operated for size classification and/or relative density separation. The objective was to produce high-quality iron ore material suitable as sinter feed. An iron concentrate with a grade around 57.0% Fe (Calcined Fe of about 63.0%) was achieved while recovering around 67.0% of the feed weight. In addition, a rejection of substantial content of Silica (>75%) and Alumina (>66%) was achieved while securing >77% iron recovery. On the other hand, sharp classification efficiency with low values of imperfection around 0.20 was obtained. Consequently, the response of the lower grade iron ore sample to FDS application, has vast potential to reject deleterious impurities as a single stage separating beneficiation equipment. Remarkably, it was demonstrated, that a great amount of goethite, abundant in lower grade iron ore fines/plant rejects, which are currently being either stockpiled and/or dumped as waste, can be treated using FDS application and potentially can add a significant value to the iron ore mining industry by recovering additional iron ore fines. "The purpose of this research is to develop enhancements in the mineral processing by flotation methods of nonferrous ores. Currently, 180-190 million tons of ore are processed by flotation in Russia. The annual processing volume of copper-nickel and copper-zinc ores exceeds 20 million tons. In the total volume of processed ores by flotation, non-ferrous ores account for roughly 35% and ores of precious metals for another 15%. The total demand of flotation reagents in Russia in 2016 was estimated at 170,000 tons. Sulfur-based collectors used in the flotation of non-ferrous sulfide ores (typically, xanthates) do not always offer sufficiently high recovery of valuable components.It has been found that reagents like DMIPEC and DK-80 improve the recovery of metals into concentrates. To identify the reasons of that higher recovery, quantum chemical calculations of the mechanism and interaction forces of DMIPEC with non-ferrous sulfides were undertaken by determining the stabilization energy of the resulting chemical complexes. It has been shown that, in the interaction of DMIPEC and DK-80 with the surfaces of sulfide minerals, ethylene and acetylene bonds act as the reaction centers, and the formation of molecular p-complexes is the result of metal-cation interactions with the surface and the flotation reagents.In the flotation of non-ferrous ores, DMIPEC and DK-80 act as selective supplementary collectors with foaming properties, and at a flow rate of 3-35 g/ton, they reduce the flotation time, and increase copper recovery by up to 3.5%, zinc recovery by up to 12%, gold recovery by up to 8-10%, allowing to increase the recovery of valuable components by 1.5-12.0%, basically this kind of reagents nearly double the flotation rate, improve the grade of the concentrate, improve the stability of the flotation process parameters, and reduce the environmental impact of flotation plants."

"More than 400 plants in the world are able to accumulate nickel (Ni) in their aerial parts at concentrations higher than 10 g per kg of dry biomass. Then, Ni can be recovered from the biomass of these hyperaccumulator plants. Agromining is a chain consisting in growing such plants and producing metal. It has been developed thanks to the combined know-how of agronomy and hydrometallurgy. Hydrometallurgical processes have been designed; two different pathways were developed: i) acid leaching of ashes after biomass combustion and ii) direct Ni water extraction after biomass grinding. Experiments with 2 species of Ni hyperaccumulators (A. murale from the Balkans and R. bengalensis from Malaysia) have shown that the first process is very robust and transposable. For the second one, the way Ni is stored in the plant has a strong influence on extraction. A. murale transformation was explored in more details from the lab scale to the pilot scale. Results proved that Ni is totally transferred into the aqueous phase after 2 hours at 90 °C. A life cycle assessment has clearly shown the environmental interest of this approach (especially by detoxifying agricultural soils). INTRODUCTION Agromining is an emerging phytotechnology aiming at recovering metals thanks to hyperaccumulating plants (van der Ent et al., 2018). These plants are able to accumulate very high concentrations of metal in their aerial parts. For example, for nickel, the hyperaccumulation threshold is 0.1%, i.e. 10 grams of metal per kilogram of dry biomass. There are some advantages to use this technology instead of conventional mining techniques: •,Treating unconventional metal resources: they can be (i) natural soils with low concentrations but also low fertility because of the metal presence (like serpentine soils for Ni) (Bani et al., 2015), (ii) mine tailings or (iii) industrial wastes (like surface treatment sludge) after soil construction (Rue, 2017);"

"The paper describes the results of the study of gold-copper flotation concentrate atmospheric oxidation at different sizes of material, varying oxidation time, with air or oxygen blow. The study showed the low rate of sulphide oxidation during oxidation of flotation concentrate at a feed size (P98 -74 µm). The coppery recovery into solution was 48%; the recovery of gold by subsequent cyanidation reached 86%. Preliminary flotation concentrate grinding to P98 -20 µm provided oxidation of 90% of copper minerals, 80% of arsenopyrite and 15% of pyrite. The gold recovery by atmospheric oxidation of a fine-ground flotation concentrate increased by 59%, from 36% to 95%, the NaCN consumption reduced by 21 kg/t, from 30 to 9 kg/t. INTRODUCTION Processing of sulphide gold-copper ores and concentrates using conventional cyanidation technology results in higher reagent consumption and lower gold recovery. Destruction of sulphide minerals and extraction of copper from a processed product prior to cyanidation is essential for improving efficiency of precious metals recovery and reducing main reagents consumption. Atmospheric oxidation (AO) is one of the most promising hydrometallurgical methods of refractory gold-copper concentrates processing, along with biooxidation and pressure oxidation. The nature of this approach lies in oxidation of sulphides at 90-95°C, in acidic or alkaline conditions, with bubbling of oxygen or air, after preliminary ultrafine grinding (1-4). The following reactions of sulphide oxidation occur during atmospheric oxidation of a gold-copper flotation concentrate. Pyrite is oxidized with the formation of ferric sulphate (1) and elemental sulphur at low temperatures (2), whereas some portion of elemental sulphur reacts to form sulphuric acid: FeS2+3,75O2+0,5H2O=0,5Fe2(SO4)3+0,5H2SO4; ?G=-1144,02 kJ/mol (1)"

"Since the introduction of the concept of flexible circuits (Powell and Bye, 2009), it has been further developed and refined to the definition of ‚FlexiCircuits leverage ore variability to maximise resource utilisation?. The focus of flexible circuits is to investigate processing options that provide extra capacity through sophistication rather than scale. This requires a combination of smart ore characterisation, economic modelling and innovative processing plant design. Flexible circuit design can reduce energy requirements through gangue rejection or progressive ore upgrade; and increased robustness and controllability by leveraging off ore variation. Each rock type, as characterised through Geometallurgical ore modelling, may be processed more efficiently by individually optimising processing paths. The objective of FlexiCircuits is to transform the processing capability of comminution and concentrator plants - targeting step change in performance through integrating a range of interrelated improvement opportunities. Considerable effort has been applied to developing the modelling and simulations tools required to develop and demonstrate the potential of this concept. This paper presents a practical application as a test case. A realistic application of flexible circuits is provided through a conceptual circuit design of an iron ore processing plant. It is simulated as a multi-component feed with a range of new models in the researcher’s Model Developers’ Kit (MDK) to trial the ability of different circuit designs to respond to variable ore and quantifying the potential of these circuits to transform processing capability of variable ore feed. The outcomes of the simulations are presented and discussed, providing a practical demonstration of the level of modelling and simulation required and the potential of flexible circuit design."

The froth zone in a flotation cell is recognised as a region which contributes to the overall flotation performance. Froth recovery is a measure of the efficiency with which the froth phase delivers particles arriving at the pulp-froth interface to the concentrate. Poor froth recovery in scavenger stages is generally attributed to poor froth stability. The key indicators of froth performance: froth recovery, entrainment and water recovery were measured in an OK3 pilot cell installed at a zinc concentrator in Australia and supplied with scavenger feed. Cell hydrodynamic and pulp chemical conditions during the operation of the cell were also measured as well as bubble growth across the froth phase. The objective of the work was to assess the impact of a number of commercial frothers on the froth performance in the OK3 cell and assess the suitability of using bubble growth as an indicator of froth stability.

"The paper presents the results of research on the development of gold and silver extraction technology from refractory gold sulphide flotation concentrate of one deposits of Nord-East of Russia. The concentrate is due to the complex mineral composition. Gold and silver are finely disseminated in sulphide minerals (arsenopyrite and pyrite partially oxidized by 7-11%). These are characterized by high content of silver 219 g/t and sulphide sulfur 32%, the presence of poorly soluble silver minerals (silver sulfosalts, fahlore, finely dispersed hypergenic acanthite in iron hydroxides and jarosite, etc.), and impurity minerals capable of interacting with cyanide (pyrrhotite, marcasite, nonferrous sulphides) and causing higher than normal cyanide consumption. Pretreatment of refractory sulphide concentrate by biooxidation using a mixed association of mesophilic and moderately thermophilic bacteria at a temperature of 36-40 °C for 120 hours oxidized arsenopyrite by 97.5%, pyrite by 93.5%, unlocked refractory gold, and generally oxidized the minerals absorbing cyanide and oxygen before cyanidation. Further oxidation of these minerals-absorbents was facilitated by the aeration in calcareous medium of the solid biooxidation residues of the concentrate. Sorption cyanidation of the solid biooxidation residues with addition of lead (II) of recovered 91.2% of gold and 82.9% silver from biooxidation residue, compared with 80.1% and 46.6%, respectively, for sorption cyanidation without the preceding biooxidation step. Biooxidation of the concentrate prior to cyanidation improves the recovery of precious metals, especially silver, and significantly reduces cyanide consumption from 18.7 kg/t to 3-5 kg/t of concentrate. INTRODUCTION Biooxidation of gold sulphide concentrates using acidophilic microorganisms has been successfully applied worldwide (van Aswegen et al., 2007; Gericke et al., 2009; Sovmen et al., 2007; Sovmen et al., 2009). At least 15 full-scale plants for tank biooxidation of sulphide concentrates are presently in operation, and the construction of new ones is planned (Bulaev et al, 2015)."

The beneficiation study of low quality pyrophyllite is conducted to enhance the value of it by selective grinding. In mining stage, the main gangue mineral is quartz, and the content of quartz in ore has an adverse effect on the quality of pyrophyllite. Using the huge difference in hardness between quartz and pyrophyllite, the selective grinding is accomplished using stirred ball mill. As a result, a finer pyrophyllite particle can be easily separated from coarser quartz particle by simple size classification, and the content of Al2O3 of fine particle smaller than 45um increased largely. It means that the pyrophyllite particle is ground selectively compared to the quartz particle, and the quality of pyrophyllite is enhanced.

"It is well known that froth phase has a controlling influence on the overall flotation performance. Froth recovery is expected to be affected by froth transportation behaviour. The latter has been represented by different volume balance and energy balance based models. In froth transportation models based on a volume balance, the froth phase is divided into different zones. The total froth residence time is the sum of the time spent in each zone and is dependent on the cell geometry, bubble burst rate and the position that bubbles enter into the froth phase. Alternatively, the froth transportation model based on an energy balance treats the froth phase as a block. In this model, froth height above the concentrate lip is being predicted by minimising the energy of the system which is dependent on the froth geometry, froth stability and froth rheology. The froth height can be used to calculate the froth efficiency of delivering mineralized bubbles from the pulp to the concentrate lip. This paper critically analyses the current models of froth transportation in flotation, and examines the limitations of these models. The importance of froth rheology, which is the resistance to the froth flow towards the discharging weir, in determining froth transportation, is also highlighted."

"Dynamic air classifiers separate particles in a gas flow due to different particle trajectories utilizing differences in the settling velocity of particles as characteristic property for separation. The present contribution takes a close look at the separation of heterogeneous mixtures, in which valuables and gangue minerals show significant differences in density. The focus was on a moist iron ore sample, which was characterized in terms of mineralogy, grain size distribution, and particle size distribution. The material was classified at a cut size of 45 µm and at feed moistures between 0 and 6 wt.-%. Additionally to standard characterization techniques, the moisture of both products was measured as well as the yield of fines as product fraction in a corresponding processing plant. In addition, an automated mineral liberation analysis (MLA) provided information of the enrichment and segregation of individual mineral phases in the products. The MLA of the classification products reveals a selective comminution of the mineral phases and especially on overmilling of the valuables. For the first time, the separation of individual mineral phases has been assessed and compared to the classic assessment of classification processes by means of particle size analyses. "The results of mineralogical and technological studies of platiniferous dunites from Svetloborsky zonal massif (Urals platinum belt) are presented and the basic typomorphic signs of productive mineral assemblages are substantiated. The characteristic features of platinum ore mineralization are revealed: a wide range of iron-platinum alloys, enrichment of ore-formed system by the elements Os, Ir, Rh and activity of the S and As in it, intrusion of Fe-Ni sulfides in platinum and its fusion with magnetite. More than 80% of PGM mineral grains has size less than 100 microns, that determines the possibility of significant losses of platinum in the process of gravity separation and the need for additional recovery processes for small and fine fractions of platinum tailings and sludge products. Summarized results of laboratory tests of small-volume sample processing of platiniferous dunites are presented and the processing flow sheet is developed and tested. The flow sheet incorporates several stages, including stage-wise grinding and gravity separation of ore using the centrifugal concentrator Knelson KS-MD for differently sized material and flotation treatment of tailing products using new classes of reagents for additional recovery of PGM fines."

"Comparative atmospheric H2SO4 and H2SO4 + H2O2 leaching experiments were performed using a Turkish lateritic nickel ore containing 1.52% Ni. In the leaching tests; acid concentration, temperature and leaching time were considered as main variables and the dissolution behaviour of the ore were studied by Ni, Fe, Co and Mg analyses. The dissolution values in the H2SO4 leaching experiments were observed to increase up to 60% (w/w) acid concentration and a temperature of 95°C. Increase of H2SO4 concentration above 60% at 95°C caused decreases in all the dissolution values and this was attributed to the formation of Fe2(SO4)3 and Fe2(SO4)3•HSO4•H2O type compounds. At the considered optimum H2SO4 leaching conditions ([H2SO4]= 45%, T=95°C, t=45 min); dissolution values reached for Mg, Ni, Fe and Co were determined as 99.12%, 95.58%, 92.63% and 78.37%, respectively. An activation energy of 30.57 kJ/mole was determined for nickel dissolution from the evaluation of the kinetic data obtained for H2SO4 leaching showing that the dissolution was controlled by external diffusion and chemical reactions. Caro’s acid solutions were prepared at H2SO4/H2O2 mole ratio of 3 for varying initial H2SO4 concentrations and leaching tests were performed at 25°C. Co behaved very differently and a dissolution value of 83.94% was obtained even at 5% acid concentration in 60 minutes reaction time. Complete dissolution of Co was obtained after 30 minutes of reaction time at 60% initial H2SO4 concentration and the corresponding dissolution values for Mg, Ni, and Fe were reached to 96.16%, 94.27% and 89.46%, respectively. Although the H2SO4 + H2O2 leaching experiments were conducted at 25°C, it was realized that the temperature of the leaching medium was increased to 122°C after four minutes of reaction time due to probable exothermic reaction(s) at 60% initial acid concentration."

"In all electrical beneficiation methods, the difference in electro-physical properties of the contributed mineral particles, essentially frictional charge, electrical conductivity and dielectric constant properties are exploited to achieve separation. The composition of the raw material determines what kind of either corona charging, conductive induction, or triboelectric separation method should be employed. The process is versatile and is influenced by different parameters related to mineral characteristics, surrounding ambient conditions and electrical and mechanical attributions of the separating device. Electrical separation is surface based beneficiation method which is mainly affected by the surface and surface changes of the minerals. Therefore, it is essential to understand how the electrophysical properties of the minerals can be changed/modified. During electrical/electrostatic separation process, both charge magnitude and its polarity that developed on the particles and therefore, their electrical beneficiation potential is essentially defined by surface phenomena. Therefore, it is essential to understand how the main electro-physical parameters can be changed/modified with applied surface treatment/pretreatment methods to promote separation. Surface treatment of minerals is carried out by different means, including chemical conditioning, irradiation, thermal treatment, etc. This paper discusses and analyze the electrical separation process, electrophysical properties of the minerals with special focus on the effect of surface pretreatment/treatment methods to affect electrical beneficiation potential of the minerals. The surface treatment methods vary in a wide range from simple surface cleaning to more complicated chemical conditioning and doping. The knowledge of the solid-state physics and chemistry leads to improve the beneficiation potential of different mineral systems by choosing suitable treatment method(s). Despite the complexity and multiplicity of the charging mechanisms, difficulties in separating fines it seems to be beneficial make our attempts to further investigate and develop the process as dry, low cost beneficiation process, especially nowadays when environmental concerns, as well as energy and water consumptions are main concerns for mining industry."

Lab-scale flotation of copper and cobalt oxidized ore from the Luiswishi deposit in the Katanga province (DRC) has been done focusing on the influence of the degree of process water recycling on metals recovery. Results have shown that at 20 % recycling rate, the recovery of copper and cobalt in the cleaner stage have been respectively reduced to 23 % and 45 % in comparison to 53 % Cu and 63 % Co if process water has not been recycled. At 10 % recycling rate however, the system could still tolerate the effect from recycling, since Cu and Co recovery has remained respectively at acceptable levels of 52 % and 60 %. In order to explain the reasons for the observed worsening of flotation results if process water was recycled at rate higher than 20 %, electrochemical investigation of the pulp has been performed. It has been established that the chemical compounds formed in the pulp when process water was recycled, do influence the sulphidization of malachite and heterogenite and impact further collector adsorption. To confirm these assumptions, the effect from thiosulphate ions presence during the sulphidization of high purity malachite has been studied. It has been found, that thiosulphate ions depending on their concentration in water induce variations in pulp properties such as DO content, pH, Es and contribute to formation of undesirable chemical compounds on mineral surface as identified by DRIFT spectroscopy.

This paper presents a theoretical investigation on the ionic equilibrium of Fe(III)?Ni(II)?H2SO4?H2O system. A non-ideal speciation model is developed to calculate the concentration distribution of iron and nickel species in a mixed ferric and nickel sulphate aqueous solution over the pH range from 0 to 4 and temperature from 25 to 100°C. A series of speciation diagrams for iron and nickel species is plotted with the effects of ionic strength and temperature on the equilibrium constants being taken into account. The ionic strength-dependent equilibrium constant is treated through a semi-empirical Vasil&apos;eV equation, which is based on an extended Debye?Hückel theory. A Helgeson model is applied to extrapolate the equilibrium constant to elevated temperature. The ionic equilibrium reactions are described by a group of numerical equations containing the temperature and ionic strength-dependent equilibrium constants, which are solved by the Newton-Raphson method. The speciation model is also applied to estimate the hydrogen ion activities and corresponding pH values. The calculated pH values are in agreement with the experimentally measured pH, and are compared to literature data and pH values produced by the Visual MINTEQ® program (a computer code for the calculation of chemical equilibrium in natural aqueous system). This investigation provides a deep insight into the ionic equilibrium behavior of a mixed metal sulphate aqueous system which commonly occurs in hydrometallurgical processing.
