Pure camsellite samples were prepared through crushing, sorting and grinding the high-grade iron-containing camsellite ores from Fengcheng, Liaoning, China. The flotation behaviour of camsellite was studied via a systematic investigation of camsellite flotation re-covery changes as a function of choices and dosages of collectors and depressants at different slurry pH. The results showed that at pH 8.5 to 9.5, the recovery of camsellite reached the maximum at 90%~93.5% using dodecylamine as the collector, while under the same condition a recovery of 84%~86% could be achieved with sodium oleate. The adsorption of dodecylamine was not affected by the addition of sodium hexametaphosphate, but the adsorption of sodium oleate could be significantly depressed. This implied that sodium metahexaphosphate could be used as an effective depressant for the other associated minerals during the dodecylamine flotation of camsellite. When starch was used as the depressant, the flotation of camsellite by sodium oleate was almost completely depressed in the alkaline conditions. Significant depressions were also observed when calcium chloride was added in the camsellite-sodium oleate system. The higher the slurry pH is, the stronger the depression. Zeta potential measurements indicated that the flotation was mainly initiated by the electrostatic adsorption of the collector on camsellite. X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) analysis showed that the adsorption was originated from the electrostatic attraction between the N atom in dode-cylamine and B atom in camsellite. Dodecylamine had a higher coverage on the camsellite surface than sodium oleate.

"The following study shows the improvement and simulation of a gold recovery plant of 24 t/day of capacity by gravity concentration, flotation and leaching. The ore processed had grades of 6 g/t Au, 15 g/t Ag, and 0.69 %Cu with the mineralogy consisting of 2 %chalcopyrite, 12 %pyrrhotite, 7 %plagioclase and 50 %quartz. The recovery process starts with crushing the ore followed by grinding it further in a ball mill. The ground ore is then concentrated in a Falcon centrifugal concentrator with concentrate being processed by amalgamation process. Gravity tails are sent to a flotation circuit where the copper minerals and some gold are concentrated. Lastly, the flotation tailings undergo cyanidation for gold recovery. Currently, the overall recoveries are 82.8 %Au, 49.6 %Ag and 99.1 % Cu. The optimization was developed in the laboratory using a Wilfley table by gravity concentration. Flotation tests in the laboratory were performed using potassium amyl xanthate and pine oil. Lastly, cyanidation was then performed on the flotation tailings. The results showed the optimum concentration of sodium cyanide in cyanidation is 2 g/L, which produced an increase in gold recovery from 30% to 44%. The reduction of diameter particle from 132 to 80 µm also produces an incremental recovery of gold and silver from 11% to 21% Au and 0.4 to 3% Ag in gravity concentration. Likewise in the cyanidation the recovery of gold and silver has shown a rise from 44 to 62% and 8 to 32% for Au and Ag respectively. However, the flotation method the gold recovery is reduced from 68 to 30% Au by reducing the particle size. Computer simulations using the programs, Moly-Cop and ModSim were performed to determine optimum parameters for the recovery of precious metals at the gold recovery plant."

A dynamic, interactive map has been developed of the life cycle of a number of metals, from mining through to minerals processing, metal production, product manufacturing, recovery and waste management. Whilst the existing metal process network and waste management infrastructure provide substantial scope for (product) design, these also limit change due to the complex interdependence of metals, both in production and recovery, and the strong path dependency of industry and infrastructure development. Therefore, models for dynamic simulation were constructed that allow the specification and evaluation of the metal process network and waste management infrastructure ‘products’ over a longer time span. The model has been constructed using a bottom-up approach, to enable assessment of the environmental aspects of metallurgy and to simulate changes in the system structure and technology, i.e. from reactor or individual process step up to integrated material cycles. The model comprises hierarchical mass balances and linear models of individual processes and sub-processes. Thus, at lower system aggregate levels an increasing level of technical detail is represented. Data reconciliation has been used literature data on process feed, products and residue composition to calculate representative and reliable split factors around each (sub-)process. World production figures on process capacity and recovery rates are be used to calculate the relative contribution of processes. The dynamic map is illustrated with a case on the introduction of lead-free solder.

"This study aims to investigate coarse particle detachment mechanisms (particle diameter > 150 ?m) utilising both experimental and numerical technique. Two mechanisms were studied – (i) interactions of bubbleparticle (BP) aggregate with vortices and (ii) coalescence of bubble-particle aggregates. On the first mechanism, interaction behaviour of coherent vortex structures with a BP aggregate (bubble diameter db = 3 mm, particle diameter dp = 0.3 mm) was studied using a CFD model in the Reynolds number range of 100 to 1000. Effect of surface hydrophobicity on the BP stability was examined using a range of contact angle boundary conditions. To address the second mechanism, interactions of bubble-particle aggregate (db ~ 4 mm, dp ~ 0.4 mm) with both free gas-liquid interface and individual bubbles were investigated using high speed imaging. Both rebound and coalescence outcomes were observed to be responsible for BP instability leading to particle detachment.INTRODUCTIONIt is widely known that flotation process performs excellent mineral recovery for base metal ore particles that are typically in the range of ~ 20 to 150 µm in diameter (Jameson, 2010). More specifically, higher recoveries are usually reported for particles in the size range of ~20 to 70 µm while outside this spectrum, generally the recovery diminishes significantly. It would be highly desirable to improve the recovery of particles at the coarse end of the flotation size range spectrum which has significant economic benefit (Jameson, 2010). However, it is essential that insights to particle detachment phenomenon, the primary impediment in coarse particle flotation caused by the underlying hydrodynamic factors are first obtained at a greater depth.In an ideal quiescent liquid medium, due to inertia, coarse particles deviate substantially from the fluid streamlines and collision efficiency with bubbles decreases which can only be augmented by increasing turbulence level in the medium sufficiently to make random physical contacts with bubbles. Nonetheless, even if successful contacts are made, it is difficult for these large particles to remain attached to bubbles in a turbulent shear flow environment. There are two major mechanisms postulated for particle detachment – interaction of turbulent flow structures (eddies) with BP aggregate and coalescence among surrounding aggregates. Earlier work of Schulze (1982) theorised a vortex acceleration component to characterise turbulence effect on BP aggregate instability in flotation machines. Wang et al. (2015) investigated bubble detachment behaviour from a stationary particle in a nearly homogeneous and isotropic flow field. Using PIV (particle image velocimetry), it was shown that the local maximum energy dissipation rate for the case of bubble detachment was significantly higher than the no detachment case, and was also higher than the critical value for bubble detachment calculated using Schulze’ theory (Schulze, 1982). Later, Wang et al. (2017) also visualised the BP aggregate instability in a cavity flow leading to particle detachment which was attributed to bubble coalescence, bubble surface oscillation and particle deceleration phenomena."

The EU Directive 2000/53/EC on end-of life vehicles (ELVs) states that in 2015 at least 85 wt.-% of a vehicle has to be reused or recycled. This result in the obligatory need to separate additionally metallic and other components of the automotive shredder residues (ASR), so that they can be professionally prepared for recycling and reuse further. Currently the iron-containing fines of ASR are deposited as it is not possible to process in blast furnaces due to its particle size (< 4 mm), composition and material properties. Additionally problems are also caused in handling and transportation (dust) of the material. This work focuses mainly on the ASR materials utilization in blast furnaces. Material was further separated into two consecutive fractions by carrying out repeated crushing and magnetic separation twice. The two fractions have significantly higher iron content (up to 75 wt.-%) compared to the initial material mixture. The materials were assessed for their usage in blast furnaces based on the possible pelletisation with and without binders, stability of pellets, shape and size of pellets, etc. Pelletisation of the material was carried out with a single mould pellet press. Further lignite coal was added to the mixture as additive which improved the pelletisation behavior and the mechanical stability of pellets. Lignite coal was chosen as a reducing agent in the blast furnace process contributing towards additional savings in energy supplied. The experiments reveal that the production of pellets from iron-containing fines is possible with a lignite coal admixture of about 15 wt.-%. These pellets displayed good mechanical stability and can be used in blast furnace processes in recovery of the recyclable metals which are currently not recycled. The recycling of not yet recyclable metals would reduce the deposition and can be easily adopted into the economic cycle by their utilization. "Tailings from lead-zinc mine contain plenty of dolomite and low-grade fine-grained barite, which is difficult to enrich by mineral processing. Since the density of barite and dolomite has some differences due to the fine dissemination size in a complex sedimentary, the gravity separation tests were conducted with no results obtained. The magnetic separation was conducted to remove the magnetic gangues, and the results were not satisfactory because of the gangue minerals such as limonite and others were low in content. The results of floatation tests showed that the mineral separation of barite and dolomite is quite difficult because that they have similar mineral floatability. Experimental research shows that the good results can be obtained by “desulfurizationbarite floatation” processing with the new depressant TS. The barite concentrate containing BaSO4 91.27%, BaSO4recovery is 70.25% when sodium dodecyl sulfonate serves as a collector and TS as the depressant.INTRODUCTIONBarite is an important mineral material. Often associated with other minerals, it usually needs to be separated by mineral processing in order to meet the application requirements. The main barite beneficiation methods include hand sorting, gravity separation, floatation, magnetic separation, acid leaching, etc. Usually barite associated with oxide ore such as fluorite dolomite, quartz ore etc. are also associated with sulfide ore such as pyrite, sphalerite and galena. The separation between barite and sulfide ore (such as pyrite) is easy. On the other hand, the separation between barite and oxide ore (such as dolomite and fluorite) is very difficult. There are quite a lot of reports on the separation between barite with fluorite dolomite however the separation between barite and dolomite is seldom discussed.The ore properties are quite complex attributable to mineral assemblage containing a large amounts of dolomite. As the density of barite and dolomite has some differences, gravity separation between them is usually easy. The gravity separation tests were conducted with no results obtained due to the fine dissemination size in a complex sedimentary. The magnetic separation was conducted to remove the magnetic gangues, and the results are not satisfactory as the gangue minerals such as limonite and others were low in content. Due to the fine dissemination and intimate association of minerals, and barite and dolomite contain the same group ions of Ba2+, Ca2+ and Mg2+, the results of flotation tests showed that the mineral separation between barite and dolomite by flotation means problematic. Previous studies have been conducted by several institutions but none to date has come up with a satisfactory process in dealing with the deposit. This may be attributable to: high cost of reagents; unsatisfactory performance. Therefore, the key to the flotation separation of barite and dolomite is the application of selective inhibitors. Based on previous test observations and years of extensive research experience in barite processing technology, with the new depressant TS has selectivity inhibition on dolomite developed and used, good results can be obtained by “desulfurization-barite flotation”, which allows barite in the lead-zinc tailings to a comprehensive recovery."

Professor A.M. Gaudin and his students at MIT were dedicated to understanding the fundamentals of mineral processing and as a consequence were constantly searching for better quantatative descriptions of size reduction, liberation and mineral separations. I have had the good fortune of meeting Professor Gaudin and working with many the modeling pioneers who followed him. I have observed first hand the refinement of mineral processing models as they increased in realisticness moving up the steps of the pyramid (see figure below) from pure empiricism to the current pinacle of physics based models. During this journey our industry benefited significanbtly as model prediction errors were reduced from ± 20% to ± 1%. Unit operation and plant simulations improved in accuracy and speed of calculations.

TATA STEEL is the pioneer in coal beneficiation in India. The first coal beneficiation plant was set up in 1951 at West Bokaro and subsequently in 1953 in Jharia. Over the years more beneficiation capacity was added by setting up new coal washeries in both West Bokaro and Jharia, the coal divisions of Tata Steel. currently the beneficiation capacity available is 8.5 mtp aappx Being a captive supplier supplying the coking coal as per demands of our steel works is challenging in the sense that the intent is to leverage the captive raw material advantage and select the best strategy for maximizing value up to steel making. The beneficiation plants were designed to produce clean coal up to 17% ash. With the demand of increasing productivity at the blast furnace the clean coal ash was lowered. subsequently the processes were audited and efficiency improved. The next challenge was to improve the throughputs in the existing plants to maximize the clean coal production. The upgradation was designed in house and implemented to upgrade the plant from nameplate capacity of 2.1 mtpa to 4.5 mtpa while the yearly production targets were also achieved. The presentation will detail the different phases of improvements, process followed, challenges faced, and the results as achieved in the process. "This paper presents the results of a through investigation into the froth recovery measurements in a controlled plant environment using a device that allows direct collection of dropback particles from the froth phase. Test work was performed at the Northparkes concentrator (NSW, Australia), using a feed taken from the head of the cleaner scavenger bank. The feed slurry had a relatively higher copper grade varying from 5.2% to 6.8%. Experiments were performed to investigate the effect of important flotation parameters such as air flowrate on the froth recovery. The size of the particles in the relevant streams was also analysed to acquire in-depth knowledge about the froth dropback mechanism. The results suggested that the froth recovery could be as low as 70%, although it was relatively easy to achieve the values in the range 75% to 85% by the correct choice of operating variables. It was found that the air flowrate has a positive impact on both collection (pulp) and froth zone recoveries. However, the effect was more prominent in the froth zone. It appeared that the froth recovery is a strong function of particle size."

"With depletion of global ore deposits, there has been an increasing industry trend towards mining of lower average grade deposits in order to meet global demand, resulting in increased processing cost, energy usage and water usage. Consequently the industry is seeking pre-concentration technologies to reduce costs, increase production in existing operations and potentially enable the economic mining of previously uneconomical deposits. This pre-concentration can also advantage downstream processing and metal recovery. CSIRO has developed a large scale magnetic resonance based technology for the rapid quantitative detection of selected copper, iron and arsenic minerals in bulk ore. The technology is suited to measurement on large primary conveyors for enabling “pod” based sorting. The approach used in high tonnage sorting is to not sense and divert individual rocks, but to instead measure groups of rocks (“pods”) carried continuously on a single primary conveyor that can be diverted by conventional mechanical means. Bulk ore sorting operates by removing barren ore pods from a stream of crushed ore based on a bulk sensor measurement at a pod resolution of ~1 – 10 tonnes. The sorting process is based on the intrinsic variability of grade during the mining process that often occurs at the few tonne scale, and for instance, is common in many porphyry copper deposits. The MR technology has been proven in the laboratory for a wide range of copper, arsenic and iron minerals. A full scale prototype sensing system has been demonstrated in a trial at an Australian copper mine. Implementation trials of commercial MR based bulk sorting systems are progressing during 2018.INTRODUCTION An increasing trend in the mining industry is the exploitation of larger lower-grade deposits to meet global demand. Low-grade deposits involve increased processing cost, energy and water usage and increased tailings. There is therefore growing interest in technologies that enable more efficient extraction of low grade deposits. Water intensity of mining activities in a context of water scarcity, and the environmental and health implications of mine tailings are existing challenges, which are only made worse by the progression to lower grade orebodies. There is therefore also an interest in safer, cleaner and less wasteful extraction and production to ensure community well-being and environmental resilience."

The lecture is about the growing role and the evolution of advanced process control (APC) in the mining and mineral processing industry, taking into account major trends in Information Technology. It reflects the standpoint of a team, which has already successfully developed APC technology for more than 20 years. Advanced process control systems tend to rely on combinations of artificial intelligence techniques or algorithms that complement each other and cooperate. Each technique or algorithm makes it possible to use certain type of knowledge about the process, so that the advanced control systems benefit at any time from the combined knowledge of process and control engineers and plant operators, from knowledge derived from past research work and process modeling, from a considerable amount of data provided by advanced instrumentation in real time, and from knowledge that can be extracted automatically and at any time from past data and images. The lecture will first review and compare the role, merits and limitations of algorithms that are used for online decision making in mineral processing plants: expert systems, fuzzy logic, neural networks, soft sensors, optimizers, and MPC controllers. The lecture will also review the role of online image analysis and sound analysis in process control. Recent developments in this area open new dimensions, in particular the ability for advanced process control algorithms to automatically explore the past, move back and forth in time in order to make better informed decisions, and the ability to cooperate with the operators for better performance. Applications will be presented. Recent progress in process simulation makes it possible to design, configure, check, and pre-tune APC systems before plant startup, opening new options for implementing APC. This paper presents a new process for producing industrial magnesium sulphate using waste water from titanium white plant and magnesium oxide from calcinations of magnesite ore as raw materials. With the laboratory experimental equipment, the waste liquid and magnesium dioxide react effectively at ambient temperature and under atmosphere pressure. Via the press filter, a clear liquid predominately containing magnesium sulphate is obtained. It is further evaporated and crystallized by cooling, separated by centrifuge and dried. Consequently a high quality of industrial magnesium sulphate is achieved as the final product. In the course of process, as the majority of valuable component (SO42-) is recovered in the final product, most of impurities from waste acid is being removed into the by- product. With the simple operational process, it is possible for titanium dioxide plant to resolve the environmental problem completely and benefit from the industrial magnesium sulphate product as well. The filter cakes containing valuable elements such as Mg, S, Fe, Mn, V, Ti are by-product proposed to be used for manufacture of agriculture fertilizer particularly for peanut planting.

Often plans to increase plant throughput provide an opportunity for optimising plant equipment and operating methods. This was the case in 2005 at TISCO Jianshan Iron Mine, when an increase in production was planned. The thickening circuit had presented a limitation to the plant throughput and operation with poor overflow clarity and underflow density. Following a course of test work by Outotec, a 53m diameter Supaflo® High Rate Thickener (HRT) was selected for the duty. From early stages of operation of the new thickener, the benefits have been dramatic, including: ? Improved tailings underflow density by 9% ? Improved Overflow clarity to less than 150ppm ? Considerably decreased the water and energy consumption as well as operation cost ? Stable and reliable operation This paper looks at this installation as a case study and compares the previous thickener installa-tion performance with the performance of the single 53m HRT.

High Gradient Magnetic Separator with Horizontal Magnetic Line is a new type High Gradient Magnetic Separator product. It has many specific advantages, such as water-air joint discharging technique, double pulses pulp dispersion technique, multi-magnetic gradient for collecting matrix with different diameter rods, better discharging rate with the especial matrix dispose, high separating accuracy and wide applicability. In this paper, the author makes a description of High Gradient Magnetic Separator with Horizontal Magnetic Line, and puts its emphasis on analyzing industrial production data using high gradient magnetic separator with Horizontal Magnetic Line to separate weakly magnetic minerals. It is found that as the rougher for weakly magnetic minerals separation, High Gradient Magnetic Separator with Horizontal Magnetic Line has more stable metallurgical performance and cheaper running costs than other types of High Gradient Magnetic Separator when the properties of the ore change greatly and there is in the case of embedded fine particle size distribution. "A research program on modelling cement grinding circuits has been in operation at Hacettepe University, Ankara, for four years. It has concentrated so far on tube mill and air separator grinding circuits for cement clinker, with emphasis on plant sampling surveys, including axial sampling inside the tube mills. The data used for model development have come from 33 surveys in 9 plants.The operating conditions have been:- mill sizes - 3.2 to 4.8 metres diameter and 8.5 to 15 metres long,- mill feed rates - 46 to 158 tonnes per hour,- air flow through mills - 25000 to 125000 cubic metres per hour,- cement clinker work indexes - 10.3 to 18,- separator sizes - 2. to 3.1 metres diameter,- separator feed rates - 132 to 689 tonnes per hour,- separator speeds - 12.3 to 21 metres per second.The ball mill model is Whiten’s perfect mixing model and the separator model is the Tromp curve with a fish-hook. This paper emphasises the importance of calculating the breakage rates and the discharge functions with three case studies at five different circuits which were selected for discussion because they show how particular features of circuit operation can be included in the general models. Beach Placer Ilmenite is an important source for production of titanium metal, titania slag and pigment grade titanium dioxide. Besides, these well known applications for which Ilmenite is mined and processed, there are other emerging processes that are being tried for obtaining highvalue products. Synthesis of Ilmenite based materials for varistor applications and direct electrochemical reduction of Ilmenite to produce ferrotitanium are two such attempts being discussed in this work. In this paper, recent efforts undertaken to study the electrical and magnetic characteristics are discussed. Ilmenite, FeTiO3, is one of the mixed-valence transition metalbearing minerals, inwhich Fe can be in two different oxidation states, Fe2+ and Fe3+.. Similarly, Ti can be in Ti3+ and Ti4+.Ilmenite is inherently suitable for making Varistors, which are devices, used for limiting the transient voltage surges in a circuit. Varistors produced from Ilmenite can withstand harsh environments seen in nuclear reactors and outerspace. Electrochemical reduction of Ilmenite can be used to prepare ferrotitanium directly without any reductant. The process essentially involves removal of oxygen from the mineral through electrolytic action using calcium chloride as electrolyte and graphite as anode. At a temperature of 950°C, it is shown to be possible that all the oxygen can be removed from the Ilmenite sample, which passes through the electrolyte, to form CO/CO2 at the anode. The process has immense potential for cost effective production of titanium metal as well. Results of the above developmental works are presented in this paper. "Different coal properties are important in SL/RN (coal-based rotary kiln) direct reduction of iron ore, and in electrical smelting of prereduced iron ore. Laboratory simulation was used to evaluate two candidate coals, which were similar in volatile content and rank, but differed in reactive maceral content. The tests served to evaluate both the reduction rate (during direct reduction) and the dissolution rate of carbon from the coal into an iron bath.Reduction rates of mixtures of magnetite and devolatilised coal were assessed isothermally, using samples of 55 grams. The off-gas analysis was used to follow the extent of reduction. Results are shown in Figure 1 a). Coal B was expected to be more reactive, based on its higher content of reactive macerals (77%, compared with 61% for Coal A). In line with this, Figure 1 a) does show a higher reduction rate with this coal. However, increasing the reduction temperature increases the reduction rate substantially,especially for the less-reactive Coal A.For the dissolution experiments, samples (mass: 250 g) were melted in an alumina crucible (under a nitrogen atmosphere), to give a starting composition around 1%C. When the desired temperature was reached, 25 g of char was added on top of the melt, through a feeding port. Results are shown in Figure 1 b). The more-reactive Coal B was less crystalline (the graphite crystallite size estimated from X-ray diffraction was 4.6Å, compared with 11.4Å for Coal A). This is associated with a lower dissolution rate in iron."

This paper is concerned with the drainage behaviour of gangue mineral in the froth phase. Experiments were carried out in a continuous laboratory flotation cell in which froth depth and bubble size could be changed independently. The fraction of solids returning from the froth to the pulp zone was expressed using a rate constant. A mixture of hydrophilic solids (silica) and floatable particles (glass ballotini) was used as a flotation feed. Samples of glass ballotini of different hydrophobicities were obtained, using controlled silanation. Three samples, with contact angles of 50, 66, 82 degrees, were used. The effect of the initial bubble size (pulp bubble size), concentration of gangue mineral in the froth zone, and froth depth on the drainage of silica, were investigated. The drainage rate of the entrained solids increases with an increase in the degree of hydrophobicity of the floatable particles. Concerning the effect of pulp bubble size on the drainage rate of entrained solids, larger bubbles always give higher drainage rates due to formation of relatively loose froth structures which allow gangue particles to easily move down to the pulp zone. Conversely, smaller bubbles exhibit lower drainage rate constants, in particular at shallow froth depths.
