Geopolymerisation has emerged during the last few years as an industrial and ecological approach to construction and waste management. By utilizing waste materials and their reactive properties, it is now possible to create geopolymers systems that not only mechanically durable enough to be used as construction materials but are also potential stable immobilisation systems for toxic waste. Previous studies by Van Jaarsveld et al. (1997) and Van Jaarsveld et al. (1998) have reported on the numerous applications of geopolymers in the immobilisation of toxic metals. Research into the possible utilisation of geopolymers as an encapsulation media for organic waste has however been rare. This paper therefore provides an insight into the possible utilisation of geopolymers as a binder for hazardous organic materials.

Solvent extraction is the one of the most common techniques for recovering metal ions from aqueous systems. However, solvent extraction is generally limited to relatively high concentrations and requires a high organic/aqueous ratio. Predispersed solvent extraction (PDSE) is a modified solvent extraction technique in which organic phase pre-comminute into colloidal liquid aphrons (CLAs). In this study, the extraction of copper by the PDSE technique was investigated. The main focus of this study was on the characterization and application of CLAs under different operational conditions, and to investigate the effects of different parameters on the extraction of copper from dilute streams. The effect of phase volume ratio (PVR), initial extractant concentration and initial copper concentration was studied and optimum conditions for copper removal using CLAs generated by LIX 984N as extractant, oil soluble and water soluble surfactants were proposed. Experimental observations indicated that PVR and initial LIX 984N concentrations had a significant effect on copper extraction.

The application of the stirred media mill in dry mode came to the front only in recent years, but at the same time several questions arise, such as aggregation, agglomeration, sticking on the liners and the grinding media. During high energy milling, not only the particle size reduces, but among others, in numerous cases the crystal structure and the amorphous state of the material also change due to the mechanical activation taking place. The present paper deals with experiments carried out on the ultrafine fly ash grinding in dry mode at various grinding conditions in a stirred media mill to investigate the mechanochemical effect and the energy efficiency of the mill. During the experiments the particle size distribution, particle shape, specific surface area, amorphity and crystal structure of the products were examined. The product related stress model was used for the evaluation of the effect of milling parameters on the mechanical activation. It was found, based on the experimental results, that there is mechanochemical effect on crystal structure of fly ash in the stirred media mill, as it was revealed by X-ray diffraction and FTIR measurements. The experimental results made it possible to determine the effect of the rotor circumferential speed and so the stress intensity on the mechanical activation of fly ash could be revealed.

"Flotation of metal-organic precipitate in column is sensible to the hydrodynamic conditions determined by the diameter and the dispersion of rising bubbles. Thus, the dissipation energy in the system resulting of ratio between superficial fluid velocities (gas and feed) in the column is the main parameter for precipitate flotation in pilot or industrial scales. The suggested limiting factor is the aggregate stability under the turbulence created by the rising bubbles. The stability of precipitate is related to the structural organisation of aggregates, which determines the size distribution of particles during precipitation and flotation stages.Structural evolution of Mo precipitate and the destruction phenomenon were described by using of the various fractal dimensions. The fractal studies allow the detection of a structural scaled organisation of the precipitate flocs. The fractal dimension of the particle mass distribution Dm=1.94+/-0.15 suggests, for the floc structure, a cluster-cluster aggregation process either with restructuring or breakage phases.The destruction process, which occurs for the lowest values of the dissipation energy E (0.02 . 0.05 W/kg) was characterised by a fractal dimension Dg of size distribution. Besides, the destruction of floc produces very fine particles, and thus induces the difficulties of bubble-particle collision during the precipitate flotation in column."

"Recent experimental measurements of induction time made by direct observation with the ‘Milli-Timer’ indicated that angular particles were able to attach much more rapidly than spherical particles. There was around a tenfold difference in the respective induction periods for particle-bubble attachment. For industrial application, a more holistic comparison is needed, with the induction period for attachment being just one input. Over the years, CSIRO has developed a CFD-flotation model that incorporates both rigorous hydrodynamics, to simulate real industrial cell geometries, and a detailed model of the embedded flotation process, in which the induction period is an important parameter. We conducted transient modelling of batch flotation. First, spherical particles were modelled, as a ‘baseline’, for different particle sizes and levels of hydrophobicity. In the second set of results, the induction period was decreased by a factor of up to ten, simulating flotation of angular particles. Flotation recovery was found to depend upon induction period in a complex manner. For highly hydrophobic or fine particles, the induction period for spheres was already so low that recovery was limited by other factors (e.g. bubble-particle collision frequency). Further decreases in induction period, as for angular particles, did not have a significant effect on recovery in these cases. By contrast, when weakly hydrophobic or coarse particles were modelled, the recovery was predicted to be greatly enhanced for angular particles, in comparison to spheres. For these particles the induction period was limiting recovery, so that the flotation rate constant could be improved directly by reducing the induction period. This is consistent with batch flotation experiments using Ballotini reported earlier. Therefore, when dealing with weakly hydrophobic particles or relatively large particles that are to be floated, an enhancement can be expected for more angular particle shapes. In such cases, judicious specification of the grinding circuit may improve the overall efficiency."

"Beneficiation of alumina rich iron ore slimes is a major challenge for the Indian iron ore industry. High alumina is deleterious for the performance of both blast furnace as well as sintering plants. Slimes generally contain 5 - 10% alumina, and hence despite assaying as high as 60% Fe, those are dumped in tailing ponds. The slimes are typically less than 37 microns. Selective flocculation of iron ore slimes using highly selective reagents is thus an option worth exploring. Our research is directed at employing state-of-the-art molecular modeling techniques for the selection/design of selective reagents for this separation. We have earlier reported our results on starch as a selective flocculant for iron ore slimes. In this paper, we present our results on the selective dispersion-flocculation of natural iron ore slimes using guar gum flocculant. With careful selection of various process parameters such as flocculant dosage, dispersant dosage, pH and settling time, we were able to obtain a concentrate assaying >66% Fe and <3.5% Al2O3 with an yield of 65 to 68% (recovery of iron values more than 70%) from a natural iron ore slime sample assaying 58% Fe and 7% Al2O3."

"In the article carrying out technique of experiments for estimation of power efficiency of process of crushing in cone crushers «in a layer». The conformity of the granulometric characteristics of the crushed products obtained as a result of the tests, the theoretical equations for the size characteristics, and the choice of the optimal equation for the prediction of the granulometric characteristics of the final products obtained by crushing ""in a layer"". Optimization of granulometric composition of power of crushers working ""in a layer"" is carried out with the purpose of reduction of the electric power consumption at reception of a product of required quality. As a result of the experiments, dependencies are obtained, the relevance and applicability of the crushing process ""in the layer"" for obtaining crushed stone of improved quality is proved. INTRODUCTION A number of equations have been proposed for calculating the breakage energy. These include equations by Kirpichev and Kick, Rittinger and Bond (Bogdanov, Olevsky, 1982). Another equation for calculating the specific breakage work in breakage by impact and in stratum was proposed by Devyatkin (Boiko, 2003). In these equations, the breakage energy is proportional to the particle size raised to some power. In the equation proposed by Devyatkin, the ore piece thickness or the feed average diameter is used. The relationship between energy and breakage can be expressed as an equation (Lynch, 1981; Tikhonov, no. 3, 2008) where k is a coefficient characterizing the energy parameter depending on the strength of the feed, l is size in microns. The Rittinger formula is obtained for n = 2, the Kirpichev-Kick formula for n = 1, the Bond formula for n = 1.5. For n = 3 or higher, the equation describes fine and ultrafine grinding. R. Hookey proposed a formula (Lynch, 1981, Tikhonov, no. 3, 2008), where the size exponent n is substituted by a size function In all of the above equations, a single value of the feed and product size is used; for example, in the Bond equation, size is defined as the particle size of the 20% oversize (P80 and F80). However, a single size value can represent multiple distributions, making that the Bond method inappropriate for determining the size (Lynch, 1981). Describing an equation for estimating the grinding energy will allow to design the electric drive and ore preparation circuit for the given breakage method."

The phosphatic soil deposit at the Sukulu hills region of Uganda contains 10-12% P2O5. The ore occurs as a naturally degraded soil deposit containing a very sticky slime composed of earthy lateritic minerals. Desliming of the ore, which is imperative for its further beneficiation, is an extremely difficult hurdle to overcome for its commercial utilisation. Earlier studies on samples of the same ore at the National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML) and abroad established that it was necessary to pass the ore through a series of three stages of desliming, each consisting of a step of vigorous attrition scrubbing followed by hydrocycloning, for effective elimination of the sticky slime. In the present paper an innovative use of the very strong shear-fields created inside a hydrocyclone has been discussed, that could effectively eliminate the stubborn slime from the ore. The standard design of the hydrocyclone was suitably modified to increase the shearing effect on the slurry. It was possible, through the application of this modified hydrocyclone, to not only totally eliminate all the stages of attrition scrubbing, but also to reduce the subsequent stages of hydrocycloning. The modified technique yielded a concentrate of grade comparable to that obtained by employing the earlier more complex flow sheet, with about 25% higher P2O5 recovery.

"The research aimed at improving the way screen performance analysis is conducted using a model that accounts for most feed and design parameters in its formulation. Thus, the aim was to validate the fine screen model that was developed at the Centre for Minerals Research (CMR) unit at the University of Cape Town. Fine wet screening is increasingly becoming an important application in fine grinding operations. Minera Saucito, a lead-zinc Mexican mine has replaced hydrocyclones with eight stacks of five decker derrick screens to close the ball mill in their concentrator plant. The five decker stacks have improved the overall plant throughput by 20% and have had the ball mill circulating load reduced considerably. As a continuous plant optimization process, a number of surveys were carried out to assess the performance of the 75 µm panel aperture installed screens. The surveys were conducted at seven different feed rates to the entire nest of screens to collect performance data. Using the fine screen model to analyze the results, it is found that as the feed rate increase, the sharpness of separation reduces. The CMR fine screen model was fitted to these results. The model fits the plant data with good accuracy. Simulated results based on this model are also presented.INTRODUCTION The potential of high frequency vibrating screens has long been identified as an alternative to hydrocyclones in grinding applications (Rogers and Brame, 1985). However, high frequency vibrating screens have had two main disadvantages, low capacity and high wear rates (Kelley and Mckeon, 2005; Teknikk, 2009). Current vibrating screen technology overcomes these challenges by multiple deck screen design and use of wear resistant urethane materials for panel construction (Kelley, 2007; Valine and Wennen, 2002). For a example, the Derrick screen’s material of construction is a tensionable urethane that provide high open area ranging between 35 to 45% with considerably reduced blinding (Valine and Wennen, 2002). Thus, there has been an increased uptake by the mining industry in the use of wet fine vibrating screens closing the ball mill as the final classification stage in the comminution circuit (Barkhuysen et al., 2010; Frausto, Ballantyne et al. 2017; Pelevin and Lazebnaya, 2009; Teknikk, 2009). Even though there is a number of models in existence, none of these models adequately predict the performance of high frequency vibrating screens (Karra, 1979; Rogers, 1982; Subasinghe et al., 1990; Trumic and Magdalinovic, 2011). Recently Mwale et al., (2016) developed a model for predicting the performance of high frequency vibrating screens using the partition curve properties. The input parameters of the model include screen open area (??) in m2, tonnage feed rate (????) (tph) and the weight fraction of solids (??) in the feed for a given panel aperture size. The model was developed based on data collected from a single deck industrial size derrick screen, in a pilot setup. The work presented in this paper is an attempt to test this model using data collected from Minera Saucito concentrator, an industrial plant whose comminution circuit is shown in Figure."

The slag was attempted to be converted into the adsorbent for phosphate removal from aqueous solution using the alkali fusion method. The slag was mixed with NaOH powder (NaOH / Slag = 1.6), and then the mixture was heated at 600 ? for 6 h to prepare the precursor. The precursor was stirred at room temperature in distilled water to synthesize the adsorbent, and the removal ability of the obtained adsorbent for phosphate from aqueous solution was investigated. The products, including hydrocalumite and calcite, were synthesized, and the removal efficiencies of the adsorbent for F- and PO43- showed higher than those of raw BF slag, especially removal of PO43- are excellent (99 %), while the removal of Cl- , SO42-, NO3- and Br- was minor. The adsorbent could remove PO43- selectively in the co-existing solution of Cl-, NO3-, F-, SO42- and Br-.The equilibrium adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for PO43- was extrapolated using Langmuir and Freundlich models, and experimental data are found to fit Langmuir than Freundlich. The calculated maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for PO43- is higher than other adsorbent reported previously. The high affinity of the adsorbent for PO43- in aqueous solution was caused by the formation of hydroxyapatite [Ca5(PO4)3(OH)] and brushite [CaHPO4?2H2O]. Acid leach liquors from spent lithium-ion batteries employing lithium cobalt dioxide (LiCoO2) as a cathode active material contain valuable metals such as cobalt and lithium, as well as common metals such as aluminum and copper. The objective of this study was to develop a hydrometallurgical process providing a high selectively between aluminum, cobalt, copper, and lithium from hydrochloric acid solutions. Batch experiment results showed that selective hydroxide precipitation approach was not suitable because a significant amount of cobalt and lithium was co-precipitated with aluminum and copper hydroxides. In contrast, batch experiments and the subsequent data analysis indicated that the sequence of solvent extraction circuits using PC-88A, Acorga M5640, and tri-n-octylamine (TOA) extractants effectively separates four metals of interest. In the first circuit of the proposed process, copper was selectively extracted by Acorga M5640 at the pH 1.0-2.0. Aluminum, cobalt, and lithium remain in the aqueous phase. In the second circuit, aluminium is selectively extracted by PC-88A at pH 2.0-2.5. For the separation of remaining cobalt and lithium, Acorga M5640 provided higher separation efficiency compared to PC-88A single extractant and PC-88A/TOA mixed extractant. However, the stripping efficiency of cobalt from the Acorga M5640 organic phase was found to be low (less than 10 %). Therefore, PC-88A/TOA mixed extractant rather than Acorga M5640 is an advisable choice for the separation of cobalt and lithium. Metallurgical results for the copper-nickel disseminated ores were improved by using ultrasonic treatment. This has been demonstrated by processing of bubble-pulp flow in the reactor zone of a reactor-separator flotation machine. It can be explained by changes in mineral and size composition of the concentrates. Thus, the selectivity of Cu/Ni flotation for different values of the hydrodynamic parameter increases considerably. Additional effect of the ultrasound treatment has been noticed under conditions when the detachment of the gangue minerals from bubbles can be controlled. Reactor-separator has advantages over other types of flotation cells for this purpose. In fact, the weak diameter of reactors make more efficient the ultrasound effect than in conventional impeller or column flotation machines. A combination of ultrasonic treatment with original organization of gas pulp flux in the reactor-separator allows to obtain significant effects in the flotation attachment/detachment subprocesses, enhancing the process selectivity and/or recovery of substances. Increase of total recovery of copper and nickel into bulk concentrate at constant grade is 8.5% for coarse disseminated ores. For copper ore, copper recovery increased by 10% at unchanged grade of 11.7% and nickel recovery gained 17% at the constant grade of 2%.

The enrichment of useful components from ores and/or wastes has become important with increasing recent worldwide resources demand and the amount of wastes generated from the urban mines, in order to establish real ?sound resource-cycle society? including the activity of resource exploitation. The first stage of the treatment in the process must be comminution and it is important to make good liberation among compositional phases in the targeted resources. Electrical disintegration (ED) is well known to make a selective breakage at phase boundary. However, the detailed mechanism of the phenomena is not clarified yet, in especial, on the influence of electrical properties of compositional materials on the liberation. This paper made a comparison between the liberation degrees of ED products and the results of electromagnetic field analysis using finite element method (FEM). In the experiments, we used several synthetic cement paste based samples in which mineral particles were dispersed to apply the ED, and in the electromagnetic field analysis, we calculated the charge density accumulated and the Maxwell stress at phase boundary. It was found, for highly insulating mineral samples, that higher breakdown voltage was necessary because electric charge was not easily accumulated at phase boundary but that higher liberation degree was obtained after the breakdown (ED). It was also found the tendency that higher liberation was observed for the samples which had higher maximum Maxwell stress calculated by the electromagnetic field analysis. From the results, the electrical charge and Maxwell stress induced at phase boundary could be driving forces of selective breakage. In addition, we also applied the ED to the printed circuit boards (PCBs) in order to concentrate miner rare metals, which were essential for producing electronic devices. It could be demonstrated that the devices installed on the PCB were easily detached from the board and that most of metal elements in the devices was exposed and liberated from the insulating plastic covers, which were broken in the ED, then, it is considered that the subsequent solid phase separation could be effective for concentrating such metal elements. "The comminution behavior of two ferromanganese nodules samples of the equatorial northeast Pacific has been examined as a basis for the separation of two kinds of metal-rich layers. Those layers were finely grown together during nodule formation and are one reason that the exploration of deep-sea minerals calls for the development of new mineral processing concepts. Therefore fundamental analyses of the fracture behavior have been made under compressive and impact stress. Further experiments took focus on the crushing behavior in a jaw crusher and a small scale impact crusher as well as the milling behavior in a dry vibrating mill, a wet planetary ball mill, and a wet agitated ball mill. The comminuted products were characterized by PSD, particle shape, particle density, and porosity. The experiments show a low stress resistance of the ferromanganese nodules. Compared to compressive stress, impact stress turned out to be the more effective for crushing. Both samples showed no significant difference in the comminution behaviour which makes differing mechanical treatments unnecessary. In both cases particle sizes below 1 µm were achieved by wet grinding. This particle size is necessary to separate the two kinds of metal-rich layers which is part of continuative studies."

Power ultrasound may be used in the processing of mineral suspensions to clean the particle surfaces of oxidation products and fine coatings, mainly through the large, but very localised forces, produced by cavitation. This effect may be utilised in lowering the level of iron contamination in silica sand used for glass making, in improving the sharpness of electrostatic separation of heavy mineral concentrates, in shortening the time of leaching of minerals and in improving the selectivity and recovery of flotation processes. Parameters affecting the efficiency of these processes, such as input power and levels of reagent addition, are discussed. In particular, we present data showing the relationship between power input and the particle size of surface coatings removed, which can be explained by the Derjaguin approximation for the energy of interaction between a sphere and a flat surface. Pilot scale studies, using commercially available components, are currently being used to assess process viability and will be compared with laboratory scale results.

"The selective separation of pentlandite from serpentine was investigated using the magnetic coating-magnetic separation by conditioning slurry pH value, stirring speed, magnetic field intensity and controlling dosages of sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) and sodium oleate (SO). The optimal conditions were obtained as follows: the natural pH of 6.8-7.2, stirring speed of 2300 rpm, magnetic field intensity of 200 kA m-1, SHMP of 60 mg L-1, and SO of 400 mg L-1. Results showed that the Ni grade was 21.4% with the Ni recovery of 81.4% and MgO content of 3.8%. FTIR indicated that coagulant of SO preferentially adsorbed onto pentlandite and magnetite particles while hardly adsorbing onto serpentine particles when dispersant of SHMP was used. Thus, the selective magnetic coating of magnetite on pentlandite surfaces could be formed due to the formation of hydrophobic surfaces on pentlandite and magnetite particles. Calculations of DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek) confirmed that interactions between magnetite and pentlandite particles were much stronger than that between magnetite and serpentine due to the existence of hydrophobic interactions with the addition of SO. Consequently, the pentlandite was successfully separated from serpentine. Therefore, this study exhibits the potential to separate pentlandite from serpentine minerals for practical applications and thus deserves further study.INTRODUCTION It has been well known that the separation of pentlandite from serpentine is a worldwide challenging issue in the processing of sulphide nickel-copper ores. Because the serpentine mainly causes the high pulp viscosity and slime coating on the pentlandite, which interferes with the flotation process of pentlandite (Cao et al., 2016; Feng et al., 2012). The fibrous mineral of serpentine preferentially attaches to the air bubble, forming bubble-macrofibers aggregates, which are easily floated into the nickel concentrates, resulting in the decline of Ni grade (Alvarez-Silva et al., 2016; Kusuma et al., 2014). In addition, the serpentine adheres to the pentlandite as hetero-aggregation or slime coating via the electrical interaction between a positively charged serpentine and a negatively charged pentlandite, which decreases the hydrophobicity of pentlandite and reduces the collector adsorption (Feng et al., 2013). In other words, the presence of serpentine or the occurrence of aggregates (including slime coating and bubble-macrofibers aggregates) seriously affects the flotation process and deteriorates the flotation of pentlandite. Therefore, we propose magnetic separation to recover pentlandite from serpentine with the magnetic coating technology, which is different from forth flotation."

The enthalpy of immersion is the heat change arising from the replacement of the solid-gas interface with the solid-liquid interface when a solid surface is immersed in a liquid. Although immersion calorimetry has been established as a valuable and reliable means of determining solid surface properties such as wettability, it has seldom been applied in mineral processing research. In this study, precision solution calorimetry was employed to measure the enthalpies of immersion of different minerals in water. The enthalpies of immersion were then related to the first-order flotation rate constant as determined by the microflotation technique. The same measurements were also made on sulphide minerals whose surfaces were modified to different degrees of hydrophobicity using different percentage coverages of amyl xanthate collector. The enthalpy of immersion technique was capable of distinguishing and ranking minerals according to their wettability. All mineral types and collector-treated minerals conformed to the same relationship that was found between the enthalpy of immersion and the flotation rate constant. This conformed, empirically, to a power law equation. As the enthalpy of immersion decreased, there were large increases in flotation response for very small changes in hydrophobicity. In addition, a critical enthalpy of immersion (CEI) was found, above which no flotation could occur. The scatter in the data points could be corrected for by adjusting the rate constant using the density of the minerals to produce a robust relationship between the rate constant and enthalpy of immersion. These results have shown that the enthalpy of immersion is able to indicate both the natural mineral hydrophobicity and the extent to which collectors can render a mineral hydrophobic. This technique has considerable potential to be used as a sensitive and accurate measure of mineral surface wettability in order to predict flotation performance.

"Magnetite concentrate is naturally good for pelletising. However, due to the depletion of reserves of traditional high grade hematite iron ore worldwide, the usage of magnetite concentrate in sintering is expected to increase substantially. Magnetite concentrate is typically high in Fe grade and releases extra heat when oxidised to hematite. This will not only improve the quality of agglomerates produced, but also have a potential beneficial impact on the fuel consumption of the agglomeration process. There are an increasing number of magnetite projects currently being considered and developed. However the concentrates from some of these projects are too coarse as pellet feeds and much finer and denser than normal sinter feeds. Accordingly, special strategies are required in order to utilise the coarse magnetite concentrates at high proportions in pelletising and sintering. This paper discusses various raw material preparation technologies and blending optimization methods demonstrated to be effective for improving the sintering and pelletising performance of coarse magnetite concentrates. Pre-granulation and addition of binders, such as hydrated lime, were found to be particularly efficient in recovering the sintering productivity of sinter blends containing magnetite concentrates. In pelletising, HPGR (High Pressure Grinding Rolls) grinding enabled production of good quality pellets from 100% magnetite concentrates and optimized blends containing up to 70% magnetite concentrates also formed good pellets.INTRODUCTION Magnetite concentrates are often used as feed materials for pellet plants or sinter plants depending on their grades and grain sizes. To achieve the required quality of green and fired pellets, the concentrates often need to be ground very fine (80% passing 38- 45 m), which inevitably consumes a great amount of energy. Therefore, efficient grinding processes are required to reduce the amount of energy consumption needed to achieve the sizing and chemical specification of pellet feeds. The use of magnetite concentrates in sintering has the potential to improve sinter chemistry, which is deteriorating over time due to the slowly decreasing grade of direct shipping iron ores around the world (Yang and Mathews, 1997; Yang and Witchard, 1998, Yang and Davis, 1999; Yang 2005). However, methods are required to allow the utilisation of high levels of concentrates in sintering while maintaining productivity and sinter quality (Han and Lu, 2017)."

"Over the last 5 years, an ambitious project has been undertaken at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) aiming to isolate, study and, if possible, model the effect of particle size, liberation and collector adsorption density on the floatability of mineral particles. As part of this project, we have conducted highly controlled flotation test-work, combined with state-of-the-art solution and surface analytical techniques such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS) and detailed mineralogical analysis to fully characterize the flotation behavior of a natural ore.The flotation tests were undertaken using a high-grade lead-zinc ore from BHP-Billiton’s Cannington mine (Australia) in a specially designed continuously operated laboratory scale flotation rig. Solution and adsorbed collector concentrations were measured independently during the course of the flotation tests using HPLC based ex-situ techniques. Liberation studies were performed using the JKMRC Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) on selected size intervals of different streams to estimate the specific surface area of galena. These results were used to calculate the collector adsorption density (collector coverage) on galena particles, with the eventual aim of developing a mathematical model describing the relationship between pulp chemistry, feed mineralogy, and floatability of galena particles."

"A method is presented for the evaluation of mineral processing by liberation and upgrading. The method bases on the plot of recovery of valuables versus the recovery of gangue (Fuerstenau upgrading curve). The locking curve of a feed material was plotted together with the upgrading curve in a Fuerstenau diagram. The assessment of liberation and upgrading is done by a comparison of surfaces formed by the curves and some characteristic lines of the diagram. This plot allows the calculation of two new quantitative measures for liberation and upgrading. Both parameters can be combined to a third parameter describing the quality of the whole technical setup for mineral processing by subtracting the upgrading parameter from the liberation parameter. The third parameter shows a positive value in cases of upgrading determined processes, a negative value in cases of liberation affected processes and about zero for processes affected equally by liberation and upgrading. Thus it is easily possible to distinguish between poor results in the mineral processing caused by insufficient liberation or poor results caused by insufficient upgrading. Preliminary results from two case studies, performed on two different ore types, are very promising illustrating the practical use of such an approach."
