KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) has been doing various kinds of research works in marine minerals and energy resources exploration and utilization since early 1990s in Korea. In the presentation, the authors will introduce the recent research and development activities mainly focusing on the rare earth metals of the Pacific deep seabed Mn-nodules and gas hydrates which occur from Korean deep waters. KIGAM has been participating in the polymetallic manganese nodule exploration, mining and metal-extraction project, which is modulated by KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Sciences and Technology, formerly KORDI). Now KIGAM puts more focus on extracting precious and rare earth metals from the Mn-nodule as well as underlying sediments. The rare earth elements (REE) from seabed mineral deposits also draw attention to those countries including Korea which are lack in natural resources. KIGAM is doing several kinds of leaching experiments using various kinds of reagents under the different experimental parameters. Extraction of rare earth metals from deep sea nodule using H2SO4 and HCl solution showed good leaching effect. As the gas hydrates are to be evaluated as a new future energy resource globally, Korean government has initiated national R/D program covering fundamental exploration survey for resources assessment in Korean deep waters and production technology development. Since the mid 1970's, the science of remote sensing has invented and demonstrated sensors that hold unique promise for users that operate in the marine environment. Earlier, visible and infrared sensors provided images and temperature maps of surface conditions, but the 1970's introduced active (radars) and passive (radiometers) microwave sensors capable of penetrating clouds and operating day or night over the world's oceans. Space-based observation satellites permit these systems to span the globe many times each day, providing a view of the world's oceans and Arctic areas consistent with daily and, sometimes, hourly changes in the marine environment. Experimental satellites launched by NASA proved that such systems had great scientific merit, but, even more importantly, they could produce information valuable to marine transportation, fishing, and resource exploration and extraction. This latter subject includes the off-shore search and production of petroleum and natural gas resources and ocean mining as well. During a series of dives with the submersible ALVIN in 1984, samples of massive sulfide were recovered from four vent sites. All sites occur within a linear, steep-walled cleft about 50 m wide and as much as 30 m deep. The cleft bisects the axial valley floor throughout the 15-km-long study area and appears to have been the source for the most recent volcanic eruptions in the valley. Three of the vent sites are defined by a set of discrete hydrothermal discharge zones; as many as eight have been identified over a distance of 500-800 m along the cleft floor. Sulfide deposits occur as individual and coalesced mounds, spires, and chimneys generally less than 3 m in height but a few might be as high as 10 m. The vents are also marked by extensive, yellow-to-amber ferruginous sediment and clots of bacterial matter. Some vents have extensive colonies of tube worms, gastropods, mollusks, and several predator species, such as crabs and squid. The fourth vent site has no visible discharge and consists mainly of "dead" spires and chimneys of massive sulfide. The massive sulfide samples collected with ALVIN are primarily sphalerite with minor marcasite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, isocubanite, chalcopyrite, wurtzite, and anhydrite. Bulk analyses of these chimney and spire samples show Zn contents approaching 60% by weight and significant enrichments in Ag and Cu. The future exploitation of crust deposits will require a dependable characterization system. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines (Bureau) initiated research to develop a new sampling dredge by conducting a series of cutting and physical property tests on previously collected cobalt-rich manganese crust and substrate samples. Using the engineering parameters derived from these tests, a large, heavy dredge was designed and tested. This heavy dredge was capable of fragmenting and collecting in situ crust, but it created handling problems for the research vessel, thus an aggressive cutting, light-weight dredge was conceived and fabricated. The light-weight dredge is capable of fragmenting and collecting crust and some talus. This dredge can be used on flat or rough seabed terrains. It can be easily retrieved from hang ups and reset to sample again.

The technology available for mining of underwater mineral resources such as placers and phosphorite, typically occurring with variable amounts of overburden, has remained largely unchanged for decades. The traditional bucket ladder dredge with maximum digging depth of 48 m and monthly capacities about 500,000 m3 still reins as the only heavy duty mining system capable of working the tough materials characteristic of heavy metal placers. Attempts at adapting the bucket wheel cutter-suction dredge to these severe conditions have not yet been successful except in moving small volumes from shallow depths. High capital cost (20-30 million U.S. dollars), high cost of overburden removable, and turbidity generation for the bucket ladder are often significant negative factors in mining operations where this system remains the only viable alternative. The Japanese continue to advance the technology of their submersible dredge pump system powered by specially adapted, direct drive electric motors. Present systems are designed primarily for working surficial deposits of aggregate to depths as great as 90 meters, the pump suspended by cable from a surface vessel with an eductor pipe leading from the pump to the vessel. Such a system may prove adaptable to a variety of surficial deposits including phosphorite, shell and heavy minerals in addition to aggregate. However promising for the exploitation of surficial deposits, little advantage can be expected for the deeper buried and more difficult deposits.

The cost of an offshore exploration project is mainly dependent on the size of the vessel engaged for the work and increases dramatically with increasing size. Of the various factors influencing vessel size, the type and size of the sampling equipment is typically the principal consideration. This scenario is particularly true of shallow sampling programs employing a vibracore system. The problem develops when certain bottom materials such as densely packed fine sand require sampling. This type of material being one of the most difficult for the standard vibracore systems, with integral core liner, to penetrate to a reasonable depth of some five to seven meters. The problem is mainly related to the excessive cross sectional area of the cutting bit required to accommodate the core liner. The typical solution has been to apply more power to the vibracore drive head which results in a considerable scale-up for the entire system with attendant increase in vessel size. In order to reduce operating cost, M.M.R.I. has developed several systems for deployment from vessels in the 20 meter range. Two systems are modifications to the basic vibracore and a third is a vibralift system. Basically, one of the vibracore units is employed where core liners are required, utilizing a special jet bit designed to reduce the cutting pressure on the bit while not affecting the integrity of the core. Hydrothermal fluids emanating from the seafloor rise as buoyant plumes, entraining ambient bottom sea water on the way up, until they reach density equilibrium and spread laterally in a direction that is governed by near-bottom currents. Plumes provide targets for focussing exploration for seafloor polymetallic sulfide deposits associated with active hydrothermal vents because their lateral and vertical extent is commonly orders of magnitude larger than the vent field from which they originate. Black smokers can inject on the order of 10,000 µg of particles per liter into a sea water column that normally contains only about 10 µg of particles per liter. The resulting plume should be characterized by increased particulate concentration with respect to background sea water and, therefore, provide a measurable gradient towards the source of venting. By utilizing the ability of particles to scatter light, we employed a real¬time, acoustically telemetered, nephelometer to measure this gradient, and mapped the size, shape and particle concentration of plumes at an active spreading center on the Southern Explorer Ridge at lat 49°45.6'N and long 130°16.2'W. Isopach and particle concentration data indicate the presence of two separate but overlapping plumes. Geochemical exploration for marine placers involves the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of geochemical data. Recent technological advances such as in-situ analysis systems and microcomputers have greatly improved our ability to acquire and process data, but their full benefits cannot be realized until we also develop improved methods for reducing and interpreting large amounts of raw geochemical data. Toward this end, our research has sought to identify existing and/or develop new geostatistical techniques for use in marine placer exploration. Each technique has been tested by evaluating its performance in the analysis of existing data sets. The data sets typically include the results of chemical analyses of suites of sediment samples collected from areas of known or suspected platinum and gold placers along the Bering Sea coast of Alaska. Results to date indicate that three geostatistical methods (subpopulation partitioning analysis, comparative factor analysis, and end-member compositional factor analysis) are useful in identifying elemental groups which can serve as "pathfinders" in the search for marine placers, and are also helpful in discerning the generic geochemical basis under lying observed statistical correlations between pathfinder elements and placer minerals. Based on analogy with the Clarion-Clipperton zone, three main factors appear to influence the occurrence of potentially economic nodules in the study area, (i) elevated biological productivity, mainly above 50gCm-2y-l, (ii.) sea floor depth near or below the CCD, (iii) an absence of turbidite sedimentation. These conditions are fulfilled in parts of the following basins, where available data indicate that high grade and sometimes abundant nodules occur. i) The East Central Pacific Basin west of the Line Islands extending to the East Central Pacific Basin north and east of the Phoenix Islands ii) The West Central Pacific Basin west and northwest of the Phoenix Islands iii) The North Penrhyn Basin north of Penrhyn Island Notwithstanding the similarities between the environmental conditions under which potentially economic nodules occur in the Clarion-Clipperton zone and in the areas listed above, such similarities may relate only to present day conditions. During the possibly long periods of nodule formation, environmental conditions may have varied, and the deposits formed under conditions different from those prevailing at the present day. However, the fact that both present day conditions and the deposits in the two areas do show similarities suggests that applying the same genetic model to them has some validity. Possibly, any changes in environmental conditions during the period of formation of the deposits has been similar in both areas. Such uncertainties can only be resolved by a much fuller evaluation of the evolution of nodule deposits in both areas throughout recent geological time.

Marine scientists at the University of Georgia, have in the past few years, designed, developed and refined two geochemical survelliance systems for the exploration of hard mineral resources on the seafloor. The one first developed is an underwater sled which contains a nuclear radiation detector for measuring naturally occurring gamma radiation that is associated either with marine phosphorites containing uranium and its decay daughters or thorium decay products that are indicative of monzanite. The latter can, in most instances, be used as a pathfinder mineral for placer deposits that may contain other heavy minerals of interest such as rutile, ilmenite, chromite, gold, etc. This sled is operational in continental shelf depths. The second system is capable of more definitive measurements in the form of direct elemental analyses of the silt and clay fractions within the surficial sediments. It consists of a towed sled containing a submersible pump which, upon agitating the sediments, transfers the finer fraction up a hose to a shipboard centrifugal cone then to an automated sample processor. The resultant samples are rendered into sediment wafers, suitable for non-destructive XRF analysis. The system is capable of shipboard analysis for specific elements within minutes after sampling, allowing a cursory look upon which an exploration grid can be formulated while on site. A much wider spectrum of up to 40 elements can be evaluated when the wafers are returned to the land based laboratory.

The International Marine Minerals Society has now come of age! Previously known as the International Marine Mining Society, it was an informal group without officers, by-laws or official status. Despite the lack of formal structure, the Society has cosponsored symposia both in Europe and in North America including the 16th Annual Underwater Mining Institute in Halifax, Nova Scotia, last year. The roster of members is now sufficient to emerge as a fledgling professional society. To this end an ad hoc committee was appointed to prepare by-laws stating the objectives of the Society, provide the procedures for the election of officers and other guidelines essential for the operation of the organization. This paper briefly summarizes the history of the group, the by-laws, together with membership requirements.

Marine mining is driven by profitability, and profitability is driven in turn by people and equipment that can work productively and safely at sea. Design challenges faced by the marine mining community have much in common with those faced by the offshore construction community. Technical solutions continue to move freely between both communities. A brief pictorial history summarizes the evolution of offshore construction technology as it grew in the Gulf of Mexico and expanded worldwide. Attention is focused on those areas of platform and pipeline construcion where there is potential technology application to underwater mining. An especially difficult challenge faced by both communities is work in the surf zone. Some innovative concepts for surf zone construction operations are presented and possible applications to marine mining are suggested.

The topic area for this paper covers the United States portion of the northern Gulf of Mexico, extending from the Rio Grande delta east to the Florida peninsula. Declaration of an Exclusive Economic Zone in 1983 expanded Federal economic jurisdiction on the continental margins from 12 to 200 nautical miles seaward from the coast. The nation-wide area of the EEZ totals 3 million square nautical miles, with approximately 186 thousand square nautical miles in the Gulf of Mexico. In the Gulf, the continental shelf has an area of 81 thousand square nautical miles, extending to a depth of 600 ft. and having widths of 6 to 120 nautical miles. Specific areas on the shelf offer the greatest potential for containing aggregate and other hard mineral resources. The primary geomorphic features along the Gulf coast include: barrier islands, chenier plains, tidal inlets, bays and lagoons, estuaries, and deltaic headlands. These features are composed of terrigenous siliclastic sediments, except for the west Florida coast, south of 29°N latitude, which is dominated by carbonate sediments. On the shelf, the primary features are linear sand shoals and associated sand sheets, relict delta lobes and channels, and banks related to salt diapirs and coral reefs. The composition and distribution of sediments in these coastal and shelf features are determined by numerous geologic factors including: seabed topography; riverine sediment discharge; sediment dispersal patterns due to currents, waves, storms and tides; tectonics and subsidence; and repeated fluctuations in sea level.

Research on marine gas hydrate and the methane cycle has a tradition at IFM-GEOMAR. In summer 1996 during a cruise with RV SONNE offshore Oregon (USA) scientists of the former GEOMAR recovered the largest amount of gas hydrate from the seafloor. This discovery stimulated research on marine gas hydrates in Germany and induced funding of scientific programs such as LOTUS and OMEGA with numerous innovative technologies within the special program GEOTECHNOLOGIEN of BMBF and DFG. The primary objectives of ongoing and future research are to achieve a comprehensive knowledge of: • gas hydrate distribution and quantity; • variation and regulation of gas hydrate formation and dissociation as well as of the related fluid flow; • functioning of chemosynthetic communities in methane oxidation, carbonate precipitation and methanotrophy as biological barrier against methane emission and • delineating the escape routes of methane to the hydrosphere and atmosphere.

Subsequent to these brief comments, a selected panel with representation from industry, academe and government will address the following related topics: 1) development and objectives of new centers for marine mining technology, 2) cooperative R. and D. programs between academe and the user groups, 3) arrangements for specialized training and student instruction that will provide for educational components, and 4) funding and other support for implementing new centers and new programs. The panel discussion will be open to all UMI participants and whose contributions will be both solicited and encouraged.

Hydrothermal mineralization along slow-spreading oceanic ridges and rift -zones that comprise more than half the global length of the seafloor spreading center system is related to anomalous physical and chemical conditions acting within the geologic settings that characterize early and advanced stages of opening of an ocean basin. Mineralization in the early stage of opening is represented by the Atlantis II Deep of the Red Sea. There, hypersaline hydrothermal solutions discharging as density stratified brines into an axial basin, have formed the largest massive sulfide deposit (70 x 106 metric tons) known at a spreading center. Mineralization at the advanced stage of opening is represented by two types of sites: (1) oceanic crust on the wall of a rift valley; and (2) oceanic crust exposed on the wall of a transform fault zone. The first type of site is the TAG Hydrothermal Field, located on a wall of the rift valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at the top of the basaltic layer of oceanic crust. Evidence is presented for multi-stage, high- and low-temperature hydrothermal activity that produces Cu, Fe, and Zn enrichments within the thin sediment column and stratiform interlayered deposits of manganese oxides, iron oxides, hydroxides and silicates, on the seafloor. The second type of site occurs along walls of transform fault zones of the equatorial Mid-Atlantic Ridge and Carlsberg Ridge, which exhibit stockwork-type Cu-Fe sulfide mineralization

The University of Hawaii, Ocean Basins Division (OBD) shares, equally with the University of Mississippi, Continental Shelf Division (CSD), congressional funding for the Marine Minerals Technology Center, a Generic Minerals Center under the U.S. Department of the Interior's Mineral Institutes Program. The State of Hawaii supports the program by the provision of salaries for the Executive and Technical Directors and by the provision of fiscal, administrative, and facilities support through the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute, the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii, and the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology. The Center's program of research, technology development and education is multi-disciplinary and international in scope. Underwater intervention operations have been supported by robotic systems such as remotely operated vehicles (ROV) for a long time. In particular challenging scenarios such as the deep sea, the use of ROV systems for environment awareness is in fact the main tool of choice. With the technical advances in autonomous robotics, there is an increased effort in substitute ROVs whenever possible for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV). These systems don't have tether and thus provide large advantages from the operations and logistic point of view. However the limited options for underwater communications render them impracticable for many tasks were real time environment awareness and direct human control is needed. Emerging applications in underwater mining, both at sea [1] and in inland flooded mines [2] pose additional requirements in terms of operation support needs and environment restrictions. Two main tasks are to be addressed by assisting robots in these underwater mining operations: providing adequate environment awareness for human operators and obtain precise realtime 3D environment modelling (particularly relevant for the mining planning). The use of ROVs with umbilical cable, has in this case large limitations due to the nature of the mining cutting (performed by dedicated systems) that limit manoeuvrability and pose high risk of cutting the cable or damaging the vehicle. In this paper we present EVA (Exploration VAMOS AUV) an innovative hybrid ROV/AUV system developed for operations support in inland underwater mining operations. This robot is always operated without tether, and the can be used in a wireless ROV tele-operation mode using very short range high bandwidth underwater communication systems and in autonomous AUV mode.

Coastal and marine aggregate (sand and gravel) mining on US continental shelves is a major activity that supplies industrial and commercial demands for these raw materials. Because Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts contain significant shoreline segments that are in a critical state of erosion, sand-gravel and mixed sediment (sands with a high percentage of silt-plus-clay) deposits are mined in efforts to mitigate land loss. Sandy shores, and to a limited extent gravel coasts, erode by shoreline retreat due to relative sea-level rise and sediment starvation in littoral drift patterns. Mostly gravel shores occur in high latitudes and shorelines often advance seaward due to isostatic rebound following the LGM (Last Glacial Maximum 18,000 YBP). Sandy and fine-grained shores occurring in middle and low latitudes of the conterminous United States are problem coasts that require beach renourishment and reconstruction of barrier islands. Muddy coasts of the Mississippi Delta region are especially problematic because some islands are literally disappearing in response to subsidence. Replacement of sediments lost to the littoral drift system or returned to sedimentary sinks by drowning is thus a critical endeavor that involves annually dredging hundreds of millions of cubic meters of sediments from the continental shelf area. The types of shelf sediments that are amenable to marine mining techniques, their occurrence, and means of detection are highlighted in this paper. Minable Sediments on the Continental Shelf Wide varieties of sedimentary bodies that occur on the continental shelf are amenable to mining for beach renourishment and barrier island (beach-dune-marsh system) reconstruction. Relict terrestrial deposits make up a small but important proportion of shelf sediments that were deposited on coastal plains, now drowned by the post-glacial sea-level rise to form continental shelves. Examples of these deposits include drowned moraines, outwash plains, eskers, and kettles along the northern Atlantic coast in addition to siliciclastics along middle latitude Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts. Special cases include carbonate sequences along tropical costs of Florida and the muddy coasts of deltas, mostly in Louisiana. Specific types of minable deposits thus include shoreface attached sand sheets, dunes, and ridges in addition to offshore inter-reefal sands (between coral reefs in the Florida Reef Tract), bank deposits, and sand waves (ridges) that extend into US territorial waters. Nearshore siliciclastics include ebb-tidal deltas and bars. Drowned river valleys occur along all three US coasts and can be exploited for their fluvial sands if the covering mud sheets are thin.

INTRODUCTION In October 2014, on behalf of the French government, Ifremer, along with the International Seabed Authority (ISA), signed a contract to start a detailed exploration program for seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits in the work plan located on the slow spreading Mid-Atlantic ridge (MAR). The contract has a fifteen-year lifetime and the related exploration program must include the outline of SMS deposits and a resource assessment, as well as detailed environmental base line studies in the contract area. The exploration for SMS deposits generally includes detection of hydrothermal plume anomalies, acquisition of surface and near-bottom geophysical data, sampling operations from the research vessel (e.g. dredges, cores), and dive operations. The environmental studies include, among others, short and long-term oceanographic measurements, water column studies, biodiversity evaluation close and far from SMS deposits, characterization of natural hydrothermal plumes and related sedimentation. The HERMINE research cruise held from March 13th to April 28th 2018 (R/V Pourquoi Pas?) was the first cruise dedicated to exploration of active and inactive SMS and to the quantification of natural chemical input to the water column. The HERMINE cruise strategy was built up around three main objectives: (i) regional exploration including the detection of plume anomalies and the research of SMS deposits, (ii) local exploration of a SMS district and (iii) integrated study of a natural hydrothermal plume. This 3-in-1 cruise required us to optimize the switch between dives and surface operations. Day-time was devoted to dive operations whereas night-time was mostly dedicated to CTD/Rosette operations. The Nautile HOV (Human Occupied Vehicle) was well suited to the working time schedule of the cruise because it was time efficient in shorter (i.e. < 10h) dives due to fast descent and ascent speed, fast submerged forward speed, high maneuverability and the ability to carry heavy science payload as well as large volume of samples. Regional Exploration The first seventeen days of the HERMINE cruise were devoted to regional exploration, i.e. the detection of new plume anomalies and the research of new sulfide mineralization in the French work plan (10 000 km2; 6 clusters).
