Slurry flow, including flow through the charge, through the discharge grates, along the pulp lifters and its discharge from the mill is an important contributor to the efficiency of the grinding process within a SAG mill. Poor transport of finer ground material can adversely affect grinding leading to excess energy consumption and over-grinding of fine material. This paper extends a 1-way coupled DEM-SPH method to three dimensions and applies it to a 1.8 m diameter by 0.6 m long AG/SAG pilot mill. This provides detailed information on the internal flow of slurry within a SAG mill, including the prediction of dry regions and of slurry pooling. Full 3D analysis also allows the pulp flow patterns into and out of the mill via pulp lifter chamber to be investigated.

A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to incorporate data on weak rock masses into existing design relationships, with an emphasis on updating the span design curve for manned entries and the overbreak curve for longhole entries. Both curves were originally developed at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC. The original database has been augmented by information from mines throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe. The common factor in all these mines is the presence of a weak back and/or walls. In most cases, the ore zone is the weakest rock unit and must be stabilized so that the mineral-bearing rock can be extracted safety. The current NIOSH research attempts to provide rock mechanics tools to assist a mine operator in making economic decisions that will also ensure a safe working environment. As part of the Goldcorp Inc growth plan Minera Peñasquito SA de CV has developed its polymetallic deposit with a large “state of the art” concentrator to process lead and zinc ores. The plant consists of two grinding lines including 38ft diameter SAG mills and 24ft diameter ball mills. During mid to late 2009 concentrator commissioning activities commenced. First concentrates were produced in October 2009 and now the plant is meeting its design basis of 65,000 mtpd per line. This paper describes the design and operational experience to date for its grinding circuit design, together with the recently commissioned HPGR crushing circuit.

The autonomous control of vehicles interacting forcibly with their environment, such as dozers and tractors, is an unsolved and challenging problem. Forces and motions are inherently coupled between the tool and the means of vehicle propulsion. Furthermore, they are often operated within uncertain and unstructured environments, such as those encountered in underground mining. There is a growing industrial interest in the development of robotic vehicles to improve productivity, efficiency and safety in mining and construction. This paper focuses on the modeling and control of autonomous robotic dozing for a material removal operation. A dozing process model has been developed based on observations of both a fullscale dozer and a scaled-down version. The model characterizes the dynamic interactions between the blade position, material accumulation on the blade, material distribution in the environment, and the motions of the dozer. The dozing control objective is to remove the loose material as rapidly as possible by driving forwards at full power while automatically raising/lowering the blade in response to sensor measurements. Two different controllers were developed to meet this objective. The first controller is based on a set of heuristic rules, and the second is an optimal controller based on the dynamic model. An instrumented scaled-down robotic dozer and dozing environment, designed to emulate the full-scale operation, are used to implement the controllers and compare their performances over multiple dozing passes. Experimental results are presented showing that the model-based controller increased the material removal rate by 33% compared to the rule-based controller. Lastly, technologies for full-scale implementation are discussed, followed by proposed future work and conclusions.

"The following paper examines the flotation of copper porphyry ores in Assarel concentrator with focus on the reasons for low molybdenum recovery in the final copper concentrate. The copper-porphyry ore of the Assarel deposit is characterized by its variable mineral composition and high clay content, which influence the process efficiency of their concentration. Particle size distribution, chemical and mineralogical analyses have been made on various flotation products showing the distribution of the main elements of interest - copper and molybdenum. It was found that molybdenum is not concentrated into the final copper concentrate as usual in the flotation of copper-molybdenum ores but into the tailings of the copper selective flotation (cleaner tailings). An attempt to explain these results has been made with proposals to improve molybdenum flotation. Low floatability of molybdenite is caused by the ultrafine clay minerals content in both the run-of-mine ore and copper flotation streams. In order to achieve selectivity of copper minerals against pyrite a significant amount of lime is used in the plant leading to higher pH conditions, which could be another possible explanation for the molybdenite depression. The results obtained after the laboratory experiments, showed that it is possible to restore molybdenite floatability using traditional reagents such as diesel, kerosene, etc., and introducing a new polymeric reagent as froth modifier.INTRODUCTIONOne of the main technical difficulties in the area of copper-molybdenum flotation is the selective recovery of both metals, especially the fine (<40 micron) mineral particles. The problem is even more serious when Cu-Mo ore treated contains a lot of natural fine particles, predominantly clays, micas and other gangue minerals. Peng and Zhao (2011) conclude that the mineral processing industry is well aware of the difficulty in treating ores in the presence of clay minerals. Tremolada et al (2010) found that clay minerals have been named as the main problem in ore beneficiation processes due to their small size, which cause a higher viscosity in grinding. In flotation, these clay minerals have natural hydrophobicity or float by entrainment.The impact of clay mineralogy on flotation performance has been reviewed in the literature and the various deleterious roles of clay minerals have been investigated (Bulatovic, Wyslouzil & Kant 1999; Jorjani et al, 2011; Farrokhpay, Bradshaw & Dunn, 2013). It is widely accepted that the actual flotation recovery problem appears to be caused by the properties of these fine particles: small mass (and/or momentum) – high interfacial free energy (Rubio et al., 2007; Farrokhpay, 2011). In most cases, the loss in recovery is found to be insignificant, but the detrimental effect on the concentrate grade is found to be more prominent. The main reasons for the flotation inefficiency are the low probability of bubble-particle collision and adhesion, formation of dense froths and as a result - low process kinetics. A great deal of fine valuable minerals is discarded as slime in flotation due to lack of effective recovery methods."

In order to compete in the world market, Canadian producers and their suppliers are rethinking age old customer-supplier relationships in favour of preferred supplier relationships which can improve the profitability and enhance the competitive position of both partners.This paper attempts to redefine partnerships with suppliers in the context of a ""win-win"" objective. It will outline the measurable benefits to both partners through a representative product which highlights the keynote structure of any successful supplier partnership The Status Quo...Mines all over North America are plagued with the same recurring questions, ""Who has the best product for my operation at the lowest price... How do we know a product will perform to a supplier&apos;s projections after the sale...What do we do if the product fails to perform as expected?"" These questions have been asked by underground mining operators for decades but rarely have long-term solutions with measurable results been achieved.The LHD industry is one example of the status quo where partnerships will provide large gains toward technological advancement, reducing mobile equipment costs. The underground mining industry is out of sync with their surface counterparts in the open pit business.Partnerships with suppliers in the open pit world are not only a standard practice but a culture which has existed for decades. Open pit operators enjoy concepts which fix their mobile equipment costs for the life of the mine and hold the equipment supplier accountable for performance and fleet economics for 60 000 service hours and longer.Manufacturers are attempting to transfer this culture into the underground mining industry. Figure I illustrates the significance of a capital driven decision."

"The Key Lake mill has operated since the fall of 1983. The ore from both Key Lake open pits will be depleted by 1997. It is planned to use this mill, located about 60 km southwest of McArthur, to process the McArthur River ore.While the geological data collected so far on the McArthur deposit are encouraging, more information of the deposit is needed before any detailed mine planning can begin.The surface drilling program identified the orebody and provided information on the geomechanical and hydrological properties of the overlying sandstone. It was proposed to conduct an underground exploration program to further delineate the orebody. This was air proved following a public hearing and review process. This program involves the sinking of a 630 metre deep shaft and the driving of one or two drifts along a portion of the orebody. From these drifts, exploration drilling every 10 m to 15 m through the orebody will provide the information required for the preparation of a feasibility study and an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)."

"Formation of scales may have important detrimental effects in many mineral processing applications. A well-known problem is the need for frequent maintenance to remove scale from processing equipment. Another challenge may relate to encapsulation of valuable minerals in precipitating scale. In this work, we explore the ability of some crystal growth inhibitors to prevent or lower the degree of scale precipitation. In many situations pregnant leach solutions contains substantial concentrations of calcium, magnesium, sulfate and carbonate in addition to dissolved valuable elements, e.g. gold, copper, zinc. Together with non-dissolved gangue minerals, some slurries may also contain particulate gold, copper etc. During normal processing of the pregnant leach solution it may be exposed to temperature gradients or similar promoting precipitation of various scales. Valuable minerals may become entrapped in precipitates and thus become inaccessible to the lixiviant. Use of a crystal growth inhibitor may lower the degree of encapsulation of valuable elements.Using a simple model system, supersaturated with respect to gypsum, the effect of some crystal growth inhibitors on the prevention of scale is evaluated in terms of amount precipitated gypsum, the particle size of the precipitated gypsum and the carbon gold loading capacity.INTRODUCTIONGold bearing sulfide ores are often roasted or pressure oxidised prior to leaching. The purpose of this unit operation is to prevent loading the leaching circuit with sulfides that consume cyanide. Pressure oxidation or roasting chemically converts the sulfides into sulfates and at the same time, the pH of the slurry ends up in the acidic range. Typically, lime addition is the preferred means to raise the pH to around 10 where gold leaching takes place. Combination of large amounts of calcium ions from the lime with sulfate ions from the ore induces precipitation of gypsum. Compounds like calcium carbonate may also precipitate if carbonate ions are present in the slurry. Depending upon the composition of the ore, compounds like calcium carbonate and other types of scale may also precipitate on gold surfaces on the slurry particles. A layer of scale on top of exposed gold surfaces will prevent dissolution in the cyanidation that takes place during leaching. Naturally, such a precipitation may lower the gold recovery."

"Abstract - The Minas de Oro Cu-Au skarn and replacement deposits are located in the highlands of central Honduras, 90 km north-northwest of the capital of Tegucigalpa.The deposits formed in Cretaceous volcano-sedimentary rocks following the emplacement of an early Paleocene granodiorite to dacite intrusive complex. Three types of skarn (Type IA, IB, and IC) and a low-temperature replacement mineralization (Type II) are recognized. Type IA skarn consists of massive brown-green andradite and lesser magnetite and pyroxene. Type IB skarn has magnetite + hematite as the main constituent and garnet <50%. Type IC skarn comprises >50% pyrrhotite + chalcopyrite with interstitial garnet or pyroxene. Au and Cu occur in potentially economic concentrations in all skarn types while other metals such as Ag, Pb, Zn, and Mo are locally present in significant quantities. The highly variable distribution and nature of the skarn deposits is controlled by: (1) intrusive activity, (2) composition of host rocks, (3) faulting and fracturing, and (4) attitude of host carbonates.Type II Au-Cu-As mineralization occurs in calcareous sandstone and conglomerate 2 km distal from skarns and comprises clots of Cu sulfides hosted within a zone of brecciation and quartz flooding. Garnet and/or magnetite skarn is not present and the mineralizing event appears to have been a low-temperature replacement type.The similarity of coeval Au-Cu-Fe skarns in central Guerrero, southern Mexico to Minas de Oro skarns, and the similar local stratigraphy is consistent with the generally accepted theory that the Chortis block originated from southern Mexico and during the Tertiary moved southeast to its present position."

"Line Creek Resources Ltd. produces three million clean tonnes per year of metallurgical and thermal coals for the international market. The mining operation, which is located in the mountains of southeastern British Columbia, produces coal from four pits by conventional truck and shovel methods.The South Pit, which has been in operation since J982, has a benched highwall 490 m in height. Shallow dipping coal seams at the base of the syncline formation will be exposed in the highwall over the next four years of pit life. The first of these seams, which will measure 500 m in final highwall length, was exposed in J994. An auger, powered by a 1250 hp engine capable of cutting 2.2 m diameter holes, was brought on site in J994 and has proven to be a successful means of recovering coal from the J3 m thick seam.This paper covers the background to the selection of an auger mining method to recover highwall reserves together with the geotechnical and methane considerations for this approach.IntroductionLine Creek Resources Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Manalta Coal Ltd., owns and operates the Line Creek mine. The operation which consists of four active pits, a processing plant, and rail loadout is located in the southeastern coal fields of British Columbia. Figure 1 shows the general area.The coal bearing sequence at the mine is preserved on the east and west limbs of a major syncline. Up to twelve mineable coal seams, ranging in thickness from 2 m to 15 m are contained in the formation. Within the pits the seams are stratigraphically consistent and structurally undisturbed, except for small-scale thrust faults that create multiple repeats of the seams."

With the increasing awareness of the need for the reduction of carbon emissions globally, geothermal energy, which offers a potential for cleaner energy generation, is one potential new source. In Alberta, these geothermal resources are likely to be found in the sedimentary basin, or in the deeper crystalline basement rocks. Alberta exhibits a very low geothermal gradient compared to other existing geothermal fields located in areas of volcanic and tectonic activity. To mitigate this effect, the focus in Alberta will involve the development of engineered geothermal systems (EGS) in the target resource. The first goal for EGS research and development is to develop a detailed geological-geophysical characterization of selected sites to delineate potential geothermal reservoirs in Northern Alberta. One of the selected sites is in the Fort McMurray area. The deepest well drilled in the oilsands areas of Northern Alberta is located just west of Fort McMurray. It has a depth of 2363 m and as such can provide details on the physical properties of the rocks, the state of stress, and the existence of fracture porosity toward geothermal investigations. To date, we have acquired temperature logs to study the change in geothermal gradient with depth, and a series of petrophysical logs to study the finer scale structure of the rock formations with vertical resolutions in the range of 0.05 cm to 80 cm. Our aim is to identify geological features such as zones of fractures in the basin and/or basement that could provide an indication of enhanced fluid flow potential ? a necessary component for any geothermal systems to be viable. Zero offset and walkaway vertical seismic profiles (VSP) were also conducted to measure the seismic responses at the borehole. VSP data can be used to delineate the structural and stratigraphic features surrounding the borehole that could not be resolved from surface seismic reflection data that are also available near the borehole. The full integration of well logs, VSP data and surface seismic reflection data are expected to provide a detailed characterization of the sedimentary basin and crystalline basement rocks of the Canadian Shield in Northeastern Alberta and will assist in future planning for drilling.

"ABSTRACT:-A 60—cm semiautogenous grinding-(SAG) mill was designed -for continuous wet operation in closed circuit with a vibrating screen. The circuit is fully instrumented and automated. Part of the control system incorporates Foxboro SPEC 200 controllers around the pump box to maintain level. The rest of the control system involves an ACTION model BC2 basic direct digital controller that handles all other inputs/outputs and contact closure sensing:·The success of the control system is attributed to the uniqueness of specially designed mass flow metering systems. Various control strategies are possible. Employed to date has been control of a mill load set-point by cascading the deviation from load set-point as the set-point to the fresh feed rate ""controller"". Mill feed water is ratioed to total flow rate of solids fed to the mill. The performance of the circuit is being correlated with the performance of full scale SAG circuits in British Columbia to develop models, to assess the feasibility of scale up and to investigate the effects of design variables on responses such as circuit throughput. 1 INTRODUCTIONWhere ore types are appropriate, semiautogenous grinding and/or autogenous grinding (AG) has replaced conventional grinding. Secondary/Tertiary crushing plants are thereby eliminated so that capital expenditures are less and overall comminution costs can be lower (Barratt 1982). To establish the suitability of an ore for SAG circuits, pilot scale tests with 1.7 to 1.8 M diameter mills are often conducted. At least one test per ore type in a deposit has been necessary. Often, each test involves a large amount (up to 50 tonne) of sample, so that the testwork can be expensive and may discourage the use of SAG or AG circuits. However, MacPherson (1977) has employed a continuous 45 cm dry Aerofall mill circuit closed with screens and an air classifier to determine whether ores are suitable for SAG milling. The amount of sample per ore type is of the order of 60 kg or less. Thus an established SAG mill scale up procedure that employs small circuits is highly desirable.The purpose of this paper is to describe a small 60 cm wet continuous SAG/ AG mill pilot circuit assembled at the University of British Columbia to study the feasibility of scale up, to assess the influence of design variables, to develop mathematical models and to evaluate the effects of alternative control strategies on circuit performance"

"Zinc metal is primarily produced by electrowinning from sulfate solution. Zinc electrowinning is very sensitive to impurities such as Co and Ni. These impurities have to be removed to produce high-quality zinc and maintain a high zinc current efficiency. Zinc dusts are used to remove these impurities by cementation. However cobalt cementation is extremely slow and it is typically activated by the addition of Cu and Sb. Even with the use of Cu-Sb activation, cobalt is still difficult to remove. The zinc dust used for cobalt cementation is negligible compared to that consumed for hydrogen evolution. In some plants up to 6-7% of electrolytic zinc is used for cementation. This is a great waste of energy. Cu-Sb activation is not well understood. The objective of this study was to further understand the Cu-Sb activation and then find a way to reduce hydrogen evolution and promote cobalt cementation. The investigation reveals how hydrogen evolution (or zinc dissolution) and cobalt cementation and re-dissolution change with temperature, zinc dust dosage, the concentrations of copper and antimony and time. In the Cu-Sb activation, copper is deposited on a zinc particle to produce a porous shell. The zinc particle as an anode dissolves while the shell as a cathode provides a place where cobalt cementation and hydrogen evolution occur and they are catalyzed by antimony. A certain level of antimony (around 0.1 mg/L) is a key to maintain the catalytic effect of the shell. At a higher antimony concentration, cobalt cementation is accelerated slightly while hydrogen evolution is increased greatly. When a zinc particle dissolves to a certain degree, cobalt loses its cathodic protection and starts to re-dissolve. The change in cobalt concentration is determined by the rates of cobalt cementation and re-dissolution. The operation conditions can be optimized to maximize the cobalt removal and minimize the zinc dust dosage.INTRODUCTIONMost of the world’s zinc metal is produced by electrowinning from sulfate media. Many impurities such as iron, copper, cobalt and nickel are co-extracted into solution with zinc. Iron, mercury, indium, lead and tin are removed by co-precipitation as hydroxides. Copper, nickel, cobalt, aluminum, arsenic and germanium are partially co-precipitated with iron while cadmium, magnesium and chloride remain in solution. Cobalt, copper, cadmium, nickel and etc. are subsequently removed by cementation with zinc dust to achieve an acceptable current efficiency and high purity metal product for the economical production of zinc. "Recovering pyrite from the gangue with high sulfur content is of great significance for both economic development and environment protection in China. Due to the global water shortage and high cost in wet separation processes, it is urgent to explore more efficient energy and water conservation method in mineral processing field. This study has proposed an innovative method based on density difference for fine pyrite enrichment by vibration fluidized bed. In this study, the total sulfur content (TSC) of the gangue sample is 19.18%, and the pyrite is disseminated with fine granularity in the gangue which should be crushed for dissociation. The combination and dissociation experiment of -6mm gangue shows that the dominant density of -6+3mm, -3+1mm and -1+0.5mm comminuted material is +2.9g/cm3. Based on the analysis of characteristic, the effects of various factors on the separation performance were experimental studied. The results show that gas velocity, vibration intensity and bed height all have the significant effects. With the increases of superficial gas velocity, vibration intensity and bed height, the separation performance all presents a decreasing tendency. Additionally, the TSC of -6+3mm, -3+1mm and -1+0.5mm materials are respectively up to 37.94% , 35.43% and 30.61% at the optimum conditions, which are the 1.72?1.90 and 2.29 times as much as the TSC of raw material, respectively. This study demonstrates the vibrated fluidized bed can recovery pyrite from the gangue effectively.INTRODUCTIONWith the increasing mining and separation of coal, the yield of gangue has a further growth tendency, which has become one of the largest reserves of industrial waste (Querol et al., 2008). However, many harmful elements, such as S?NOx and Hg, is existed in the gangue leading the serious damage to the soil and environment (Hao, Yun, Zhanyuan, Sen, & Song, 2013). In addition, the economic would be suffered from the loss resulting in the occupied of arable land caused by the accumulation of gangue (Yeheyis, Shang, & Yanful, 2009; Zhou, Liu, Yan, Fang, & Wang, 2012). Therefore, the government has put forward the policies of ""green mining"" in China (Xing & Gao, 2009; R. Zhang, Ai, Zhou, Ju, & Zhang, 2015; Zheng, Du, Li, Qiu, & Yang, 2015). Among different research areas of coal utilization, extracting the useful minerals has become one of hot topics (Ledin & Pedersen, 1996; P. Patra & Natarajan, 2003; Partha Patra & Natarajan, 2004). At present, many researchers has devoted to the desulfurization of coal all over the world. As result, the sulfur element, which is mainly existed in the presence of pyrite, would transferred in the tailings, namely the gangue. Meanwhile, the pyrite is important raw materials to produce rubber, paper, textile and match. Consequently, recovering the pyrite from the gangue is not only suitable to the requirement of ""green mining"", but it could turn the waste into the treasure having the important significance."

The introduction of new technology in mine operations has provided real opportunities for increased efficiencies and production gains which translate into enhanced profits. Computing and network technology usage has become integrated into surface mining operations and on average these investments in technology have proven beneficial for efficiency and productivity improvements. Embracing new technologies however, does not guarantee positive results. The expectations or improvements derived through the technology must be confirmed and clarified well before implementation. Tire Pressure and Temperature Monitoring Systems are an excellent example of an existing technology that can provide full time automated performance measurements of tires operating under harsh conditions and environments. Prompt warnings or alarms signaling when a tire has exceeded operating capacities will provide savings through lowered maintenance costs and increased productivity. To truly quantify the projected savings in tire life, fuel consumption, and increased levels of production, all costs associated with the technology, both direct and indirect must be considered. Apart from the initial cost of the system implementation, ongoing maintenance and support costs must be considered as well as the costs of system integration into existing mine operations

"It is well understood that, apart from particle hydrophobicity, the flotation process is strongly influenced by the cell hydrodynamics. Once the chemical conditions were optimized and fixed, the flotation rate is essentially determined by impeller speed and the air flow rate.The collection efficiency in flotation is a product of collision, attachment and stability/detachment efficiencies. The collision efficiency for a given particle diameter is increased by decreasing the bubble size and bubble velocity as well as increasing the power input to the cell. The attachment efficiency, however, is defined by bubble size and its velocity. The detachment/stability depends on the relative magnitudes of the attachment force between the bubble and particles and the detachment force acting on the bubble-particle aggregates. For the particles having specific contact angle, the stability decreases as the energy input increases. Therefore, there must be an optimum energy dissipation to maximize recover of defined size fraction.A comprehensive laboratory study was devoted to determine the effect of power input in recovery of finely grind Cu-Ni bearing ore. Several flotation tests were conducted to define the hydrodynamic parameters for a laboratory scale Runge cell under different impeller speeds. An increase in flotation recovery of finely ground ore was observed when the impeller speed was increased from 450 to 1,200 rpm. The experimental results have shown increasing in water recovery and improving in flotation kinetics of fines by increasing the power input to the flotation cell. Implementation of the Wark flotation model to the experimental data revealed a good correlation between the experimental data and the model. For the particles having enough hydrophobicity the flotation rate increases by increasing the impeller speed due to a higher value for collision efficiency within the cell."
