lntroduction Some years ago it was general practice in Canadian mines to use the best timber available, just as it was cut from the tree. Later, to prevent 'borers' from getting into the wood while stacked in the yard, the bark was peeled off, cleaned up carefully, and burned to eliminate a breeding ground for these and other destructive insects. This practice of good housekeeping also decreased the hazard from fire in scattered bark. A few years after damage by borers had been minimized, it became apparent that increased temperatures in the mines, occasioned by deepening operations, were being accompanied by rapid growth of fungus and by decay in timber underground, greatly shortening its life. In places on upper levels where the air temperature was below 50 deg. F., untreated timber retained a large proportion of its strength for ten or more years. In other places on these levels, however; its life was short and it developed much dry rot and merulius lacrymans. In these latter places and on lower levels in the mine where temperatures ranged from 50 to 60 deg. F., approximately, the wood became infested with extensive growths of this white fungus. This development was accompanied by the production of millions of spores. Spread of infection was due mainly to the transfer of spores from the warm lower levels to the cool upper horizons by upcasting ventilation currents. So serious did this become that about twenty years ago Lake Shore, Hollinger, and McIntyre Mines decided to investigate the use of wood preservatives and the plant necessary to treat timber.

Rapid analytical assessment in copper mining industry is a limiting factor for operational purposes and for the improvement of processes. The present work aims to review the analytical assessment in the copper industry utilizing emerging spectrochemical techniques such as laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and UV-Vis-IR Hyperspectral Sensing. LIBS is a plasma based spectroscopic method where the sample surface is irradiated by high power laser. The light emitted from the plasma contains atomic -molecular spectral information and can be detected using a simple CCD based spectrometer. UV-Vis-IR Hyperspectral Sensing is produced by the reflection of light from the sample’s rough surface in all directions and it can be collected by using an ellipsoid or paraboloid mirror arrangement. The electromagnetic radiation emitted by the samples in the UV-Vis, NIR and MIR region can be used for molecular characterization. The spectrometer splits different wavelengths through a CCD arrangement in 2D spatial and spectral dimensions, thus a hyperspectral cube of data is generated. Chemometric techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA), K- nearest neighbors (KNN), support vector machine (SVM) among others, can be applied to LIBS and Hyperspectral data for better classification and quantification purposes in copper ores. Real- time determination of elemental and mineral species used for online processing control will help to achieve the copper industry 4.0. INTRODUCTION The demand for copper mineral resources is intensely growing with the increase in population, per capita GDP, the development of new technologies and the increase in global living standard. With the rise in consumption of copper, it is important to optimize mining and metallurgical processes tending to the copper industry 4.0 (Ge, Song, Ding, & Huang, 2017). The real-time analytical assessment in the mining and metallurgical processes is a crucial part for allowing the global improvement in mining industry. The features considered for better analytical assessment are the instrumental automation and interconnection, real time results, low cost, quality in terms of accuracy and precision. Furthermore, improving recovery (extraction), timing and quality of final products avoiding environmental impacts. Some elements such as Cu, Fe, Ag, Au, Mo, S, As, Pb, Zn are important to be determined in the process control. Additionally, rapid mineral identification of few species such as CuFeS2, Cu4FeS5, FeS2, CuS, Cu2S, MoS2, Cu3AsS4, FeAsS, among other can be challenging.

"On the da y shift in Number One Mine at Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, on May 3, 1887, William Griffiths, a coal miner with many years experience, fired a shot to advance the face of the crosscut. A flame ran out for a distance of fifteen feet along the roof and then extended up the slope for ten to twelve feet, and although many would have called this a blowing out shot, Griffiths said it was just a feeder. ""A blower"", he said, ""would have caused an explosion."" 1There was no explosion. Griffiths reported gas and the area was cleared for three hours and then work resumed. When the shift changed at 3:00 p.m., the fireman reported all places clear of gas and the ventilation good.2The ventilation in Number One Mine was the best anyone had ever seen. The air in the mine was almost too cold. The current was so strong that it sometimes blew out the flame on the miners' fish oil lamps. It delivered five to six hundred cubic feet of air for every man and animal working in the mine. The law required only one hundred cubic feet 3The miners considered Number One to be relatively safe. The manager was proud of the mine and its up-to-date equipment"". Recently, there had been reports from France and America about the explosiveness of coal dust, but the manager did not think his mine was sufficiently dusty to be dangerous.5 The dust lay thick on the floor of the mine. Sometimes when a shot was fired the dust rose in great clouds. When a miner was shovelling it, the dust would billow up and be carried off by the current of air. The dust was also in the roof and in the stopings, put there intentionally to fill up the spaces and prevent the accumulation of methane gas."

"Effective January 1, 1990, mines in British Columbia are subject to a new provincial mining tax statute, the Mineral Tax Act. Under this Act, mines are subject to a two-tier tax system, with a minimum tax payable on ""net current proceeds"" and a higher tax paid on net income. For many mines, the present value of tax paid under the new rules should be comparable to the amount paid under the old rules. Earlier cash payments could pose difficulties, particularly for smaller mines, but existing producing mines could benefit in the short-term.IntroductionEffective January 1, 1990, British Columbia has replaced the provincial mining tax regime under the Mineral Resources Tax Act with a new system under the Mineral Tax Act. "The processing of lateritic saprolite in hyper-concentrated magnesium chloride brines offers several potential advantages for the hydrometallurgical production of nickel. An aggressive HCl-MgCl2 leach at atmospheric pressure can significantly reduce magnesium dissolution, and offers the ability to recover HCl and MgO by a less energy intensive process than conventional techniques via the formation of magnesium hydroxychlorides. Inevitably, the high chloride concentration renders iron fully soluble during leaching and thus requires subsequent iron control and disposal steps. Experimental measurements coupled with OLITM modeling were conducted to investigate the behaviour of iron in concentrated magnesium chloride brines, in terms of chemistry (nature of iron species) and solubility limits. The solubility of ferric chloride in magnesium chloride solutions of concentrations and temperatures relevant to this process was controlled by a previously unreported solid phase: 2.5FeCl3·MgCl2·7.5H2O. Iron precipitation tests on synthetic leach solutions without seeding indicate a metastable akaganeite precipitate which transitions to hematite upon equilibration. Magnesium chloride solubility in ferric chloride solutions was also investigated to allow the simulation of a ternary phase diagram for the MgCl2-FeCl3-H2O system, in order to determine process conditions that avoid unwanted chloride precipitation.INTRODUCTION In the search for more economical processes to treat lateritic saprolite for nickel production, chloride hydrometallurgy has been increasingly investigated. While High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) can frequently economically treat lateritic limonite, the presence of saprolite negatively affects process economics. The higher magnesium content of saprolite increases acid consumption, because magnesium sulphate, unlike iron and aluminum sulphates, does not hydrolyze in HPAL. This soluble magnesium decreases the sulphuric acid strength by an amount greater than the amount of acid stoichiometrically required to leach magnesium, which must also be disposed of or recovered (Jankovic, Papangelakis, & Lvov, 2009). Due to these issues, pyrometallurgy is most commonly employed to treat lateritic saprolite, via the Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RKEF) process; this process uses a rotary kiln to dry and partially reduce nickel and iron oxides before sending the calcine to an electric furnace for smelting to produce a ferronickel product for the stainless steel market. Although the problems encountered during hydrometallurgical processing are avoided and nickel recoveries are high, high capital and energy costs prevent the application of this process to lower grade lateritic saprolite deposits (De Bakker, 2011)."

Information integration and exchange for the entire building life cycle is one of the most important issues in the AEC industry. Although the Building Information Model (BIM) technology is widely utilized to address them, BIM is mainly concerned within the design and construction (D&C) phases. In the operation and maintenance (O&M) phases, however, the information integration and exchange issue becomes more complicated because software applications here require not only BIM but other information outside of the AEC domain, e.g., disaster mitigation. Nowadays, most BIM-related research focuses on the D&C phases and pays less concern on the O&M phases, hence there is a research need that can help seamlessly transfer the information between the D&C and O&M phases. In this research, a software framework using ontology was designed to deal with aforementioned problems. The BIM data from the D&C phases were used as a foundation to generate new models for different software applications for the O&M phases. The ontology technique was employed to assist the model transformation process between the original BIM and the models for applications. Finally, a disaster mitigation example was chosen to validate the framework, in order to make sure that the transformation process is comprehensive and useful from domain experts? perspective.

"A plant study of zinc rougher flotation at Brunswick Mining was conducted using lime, soda ash and a combination of both as the pH modifiers in order to establish the effects on sphalerite and pyrite kinetics and mineral selectivity. The plant sampling and analysis was augmented by surface analysis using TOF-LIMS, SEM and XPS as well as fundamental precipitation and surface-charge studies in the sphalerite Ca/C03/S04 system.The results revealed the important role of carbonate ions in cleaning the sphalerite surface for effective activation by CuS04 to occur, and the beneficial role of combined soda ash and lime in increasing pyrite and galena depression.1.0 IntroductionThe studies reported in this paper were initiated as part of an investigation into the causes of a particularly pronounced seasonal deterioration in metallurgical performance at the Brunswick Mining concentrator during the summer of 1995. The concentrator treats a complex base metal ore having a typical feed composition of 9.0% Zn, 3.5% Pb, 0.4% Cu and 100g/t Ag at a current throughput of 9,000 TPD, although at the time of the problem in 1995, the average production rate was closer to 10,500 TPD. Zinc, lead, copper and bulk (zinc-lead) concentrates are produced with overall metal recoveries of 86% zinc, 63% lead, 60% copper and 60% silver; results which are typical of the lower recoveries associated with fine-grained, highly complex VMS and SEDEX type deposits. The main economic minerals of interest are an iron-containing (7% Fe) sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite with the main diluent (about 60% wt) being pyrite.Figure 1 shows a simplified flowsheet of the Brunswick milling circuit while the seasonal decrease in summer metallurgy in 1995 is illustrated in Figure 2. Of significance is the rapid drop in copper and lead recovery in June while there is an apparent delay until late August-September before the zinc deterioration reaches its lowest point. A more typical seasonal effect within the experience of the authors is the reverse of the Brunswick situation, namely an improvement in summer performance thought to be associated with improved differential flotation kinetics during warmer weather leading to better mineral selectivity. The historical Brunswick experience was particularly severe during the summer of 1995 with estimated incremental losses of $10 Million for this period. The potential of the very significant economic benefits to be gained from understanding and hopefully improving the annual drop in performance led to an investigation involving the minesite metallurgical group, the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) as well as researchers in Professor Jim Finch's group at McGill and the surface analytical services and interpretive skills of AMTEL."

Electrorefining of low-grade copper alloys containing various amounts of nickel, lead, antimony, bismuth, arsenic, selenium, silver, and gold in sulfamic acid media was demonstrated. The copper concentration of the alloys used as an anode was 70–90 wt%. The electrolyte contained 100 g L-1 of free sulfamic acid and 40 g L-1 of cupric ion. Galvanostatic electrolysis was conducted at 200–300 A m-2 in the electrolyte using a low-grade copper alloy anode and a stainless steel cathode at 25C. The terminal voltage was approximately 0.8 V at the start of the electrolysis, although it increased periodically to approximately 2.0 V and then shortly returned to its initial value. Nickel, lead, and arsenic from the anode dissolved in the electrolyte and were removed. Antimony, bismuth, selenium, and silver were removed as solids. Consequently, a dense copper cathode was obtained, and the concentration of copper was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectrometry to be 99.82–99.99 wt%. INTRODUCTION Electrorefining of copper is conventionally carried out in a sulfuric acid electrolyte using crude copper assaying at 99.5 wt% Cu as the anode (Biswas & Davenport, 1994). Elements more noble than copper do not react anodically, and consequently, they are distributed in anode slimes. Elements less noble than copper dissolve from the anode. Nickel and arsenic are stabilized as aqueous species. Lead, antimony, and bismuth react with water, sulfuric acid, or arsenic acid to form barely soluble compounds; thus, they are distributed in anode slimes. An emerging issue in the electrolytic refining of copper is an increase of impurities in crude copper used as the anode (Moats et al., 2013). This is due to an increase in the content of impurities in copper concentrates as well as an increase in the types of secondary copper feedstocks (e.g., E-Scraps, automotive shredder residues, and smelting residues) treated in the copper pyrometallurgical process. An extreme case is a copper smelter that does not use copper concentrates as feedstocks. In such a process, copper-bearing feedstocks are smelted in a top submerged lance furnace to prepare low-grade copper alloys assaying at 80– 90 wt% Cu (Sekimoto et al., 2013). Such low-grade copper is not acceptable as an anode in the conventional copper electrolytic refining process because it is easily passivated during electrolysis. Consequently, electrolytic copper is produced by leaching the atomized low-grade copper in a sulfuric acid solution with oxygen, followed by electrowinning. However, electrowinning should be avoided whenever possible because the electrical energy consumed in electrowinning is 5–10 times higher than that consumed in electrorefining. "The comminution process is estimated to be only 1% efficient, resulting in waste energy dissipated as heat, noise, and vibration. Energy recovery from grinding circuits has not been implemented mainly because recovering heat from the surface of the grinding mill or from mill slurry can impede operation, increase maintenance requirements, and prolong plant shutdown time (and production). However, currently very little information is available in the public domain regarding the amount of waste energy and that potentially recoverable in the grinding circuit of a mineral processing plant. Availability of such information could drive innovation and improve decision-making regarding opportunities for waste energy recovery. The Canadian Mining Innovation Council (CMIC) has initiated a study with CanmetMINING and mining industry partners to develop a model to map the energy flows in grinding circuits and to quantify the potential for energy recovery. The paper outlines the underlying fundamentals and data requirements for use in the model and then focuses on quantifying the energy recovery potential of the semi-autogenous grinding and ball mill circuits at the Agnico Eagle Goldex Division. Results show that most of the electrical energy (over 75%) is used to heat the slurry, leaving only a relatively small amount of it to achieve mechanical work (~9%). INTRODUCTIONCanmetMINING commissioned a study in 2013 to better understand the barriers for adoption of new technologies in the mining industry (MNP, 2013). The conclusions highlighted the importance of enhancing industry/regulator engagement and communication to raise awareness and improve the industry’s comfort level with new technologies.In November 2014, the Green Mining Innovation Advisory Committee (GMIAC) held a workshop to explore the possibility of accelerating the uptake of green mining technologies by bringing together key stakeholders among the mining value chain to address industry priorities. Participants included representatives from mining companies and associations, academia, provincial governments and federal departments and organizations. Two key priority areas emerged at the workshop: i) energy saving, and ii) water management."

"Short-term mine planning of open pits is an activity that has historically been carried out by hand. Typically, the use of computers has played little part in this type of mine planning. This paper describes the objectives and the procedures involved in short-term mine planning, comments on the type of computer systems available, and describes in detail a computer-aided short-term planning and scheduling system known as STEPS.IntroductionThe mine planning department of any o pen-pit mining operation performs a wide variety of different tasks. However, their primary concern is the preparation of detailed long-and short-term mine plans. These mine plan s will define the long-term operating strategies and definitive everyday working plan s for the ongoing development of the open pit.In this day and age, when operating costs have spiralled upwards due to inflation , and product revenues have decreased due to depressed economies and poor markets, it is vitally important for all aspects of the mining operation, including mine planning, to be efficient and cost effective.There are numerous options available for planning engineers when generating a mine plan. A cost effective mine plan must investigate all these options and select the optimum. When using manual planning techniques, it is often impossible to evaluate all the available options. To do this, and to produce an optimum mine plan, a computer is required.This paper discusses mine planning, with emphasis toward the short-term plan and comments on how the processes may be computerized. It also describes in detail, a computer software system called STEPS, which has been designed as an interactive graphics, computer-aided short -term mine planning and scheduling tool."

Drilling accuracy represents an important quality control factor in minimizing dilution. Apart from geology, the factors governing drilling accuracy are largely within the control of the mine. Setup location and alignment, as well as actual drilling accuracy, can all be monitored toward their improved control. Trajectory deviation during drilling, although usually beyond the control of even the most experienced and conscientious driller, can be accounted for (if not full controlled) by down-hole surveying of blastholes prior to explosives loading. This paper reviews the available instrumentation for improved drill setup and recent field experience with several commercial systems designed for monitoring borehole deviation. It reports on a recent survey of 50 Canadian mines which use blasthole stoping and addresses the reasons for the apparent lack of interest in instrumentation: i.e. does this reflect a lack of awareness of the technology, perceived inadequacies in its performance or a predominant reliance on productivity (drilling and mucking) as a measure of operational efficiency? The survey findings supported the latter viewpoint and showed that very few Canadian mines operate drilling incentive programs that are related to drilling accuracy.

"The use of large AG/SAG mills in the mineral industry has been on the rise recently due to a significant reduction in the capital and operating costs for achieving significant increases in plant throughputs. The major reason for downtimes in these mills is the time taken for the replacement of broken or worn liners. This loss of “availability” of these units has a significant impact on the productivity of these plant operations. The ability to predict liner life time and its evolving shape could help to optimize these comminution operations. In the past decades, various models have been proposed to estimate liner wear rate, but because of their empirical nature they could only be used within certain limited operating conditions. In this research, a phenomenological model which could predict the liner wear rate was proposed and tested. This model considers parameters such as; operating conditions, liner hardness, pressure on the lifter, and, relative velocity of particles and mill shell. Data from industrially measured liner profiles were taken during the liner life time at the Sarcheshmeh and the Gol-E-Ghohar SAG mills to provide a solid base to calibrate and validate the model. The comparison of the model predictions with the actual measurements of the liner wear rate showed that the results were in a good agreement at both, the Sarcheshmeh (R2=0.94), and the Gol-E-Ghohar (R2=0.97) concentrators.INTRODUCTIONAG/SAG mills are one of the most important technologies in the mineral processing industry in the recent decades. The “Availability” of these units in a plant operation is one of the most important economic parameter for evaluating their performance. The major reason for the downtime of these mills affecting their “availability”, is the time required to change worn or broken liners (Yahyaei, Banisi, & Hadizadeh, 2009; Maleki-Moghaddam, Yahyaei, & Banisi, 2012). The knowledge about the magnitude and profile of liner wear not only enables more accurate liner life estimation to prevent unwanted interruptions of the SAG milling in mineral processing plants and more strategically plan the scheduled mill outages for liner changes. It also could provide key information needed to select an appropriate liner design (Yahyaei et al., 2009; Rezaeizadeh, Fooladi, Powell, & Weerasekara, 2010a)."

For many years, optimising the relining of hard rock grinding mills has been complicated by: ?? the large number of variables; ?? the low frequency of relines (slow feedback loop); ?? the potential economic risk associated with some changes. A technology that has its roots in the automotive manufacturing industry is being utilised to construct a statistically accurate, configurable, and dynamic simulation of the mill relining process. The effects of various mechanisation and process changes can be rapidly modelled and compared. This technology will provide mill maintenance managers and contract relining companies with the opportunity to benchmark current performance against world?s best practice. It will also provide an opportunity for concentrator plant designers and mill manufacturers to plan for maximum plant efficiency, by designing an infrastructure and equipment combination that maximises annual plant availability. This simulation tool and its associated data set, has been developed using recent grinding mill performance data from mills of varying dimensions, liner configurations, mill relining equipment, operator and tool variables. The simulation will provide an output that the various stakeholders can utilise to make optimal decisions within the given financial, physical and technological constraints of the individual concentrator plant.

"As shortage in the supply of mineral commodities become more probable, there is an increasing need for reliable and comparable reserve/resource data. It is therefore necessary to standardize the traditional classification procedure by quantifying the three basic criteria in resource evaluation: economic feasibility, geologic assurance and recovery. For the portion of fairly well documented deposits and as far as their geologic parameters are concerned, geostatistical methods can considerably improve the quality of ore classification. In respect of economic feasibility and recovery, approved geostatistical methods can be introduced directly into the classification procedure. The concept of geologic assurance, however, requires a new interpretation in terms of geostatistical error spread. As the ""risk"" in estimating an ore parameter is also a function of the respective block size, it is reasonable to define not only upper limits for the risk intervals for each class of uncertainty, but also block dimensions which reflect the typical stage of planning associated with the different ore categories. An algorithm has been developed to block out areas inside a mine or a large panel which satisfies the constraints of an ore category in respect of the risk intervals of a parameter and in respect of their size. The method has been computerized and is demonstrated on a massive copper-nickel deposit.IntroductionFacing an uncertain future with respect to the demand and supply of mineral commodities, both governmental authorities and the mining industries show an increasing interest in a useful framework for the assessment and classification of the remaining mineral resources"". This is reflected by the recently published appraisal and classification scheme of the United Nations as well as by the new or revised classification systems of the USA; Canada or Australia. Moreover there are various classification schemes which are currently discussed in major mining companies."

"Abstract - Pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and pentlandite are the dominant sulfide minerals in the 740 zone of the Kelly Lake orebody (Inco Ltd.), Copper Cliff Offset, Sudbury. Petrographic and quantitative electron microprobe analyses of minerals, from sulfide assemblages and host quartz diorite, of the 740 deposit have revealed three processes that have affected sulfide mineralization and associated sulfarsenide and platinum-group-mineral (PGM) distribution: magmatic, hydrothermal, and tectonic. Accessory, zoned cobaltite, and gersdorffite occur in sulfides as a result of these three processes, and PGM occur dominantly in hydrothermally remobilized and deformed ores. Where PGM are present in sulfarsenides they provided nuclei for sulfarsenide growth. Solitary PGM are orders of magnitude larger than those PGM found within sulfarsenide minerals. Five varieties of PGM occur, michenerite and sperrylite being the most common, with lesser froodite, hollingworthite, and ruarsite.The effect of a deformation is a localized fabric in the ore, revealed by pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite bands; pentlandite porphyroblasts also partially define the foliation. The deformed ore is also characterized by alteration of the adjacent quartz diorite, which produced an alteration assemblage including almandine garnet, Fe-rich biotite, and chlorite."

"Total Quality Management (TQM) is becoming a reality in the mining industry. Widely adopted in the manufacturing and services industries, TQM has become the operating style of choice in numerous mining companies across the Americas and Australia. Iron Ore Company of Canada, Inco, MSA, Graniterock, Magma Copper, and CRA's Hamersly Iron - all are pioneers of TQM. These companies and others are confronting the challenges of implementing TQM and are managing the changes required of their people and cultures. What these companies are doing, why they are doing it, and how they are successfully managing the changes are the subjects of this paper.Driving the need for change in these organizations are a host of issues, some of which all mining companies are facing. Requirements from customers for ISO 9000 certification is becoming one of the initial motivators for Total Quality Management. These standards, commonly used in manufacturing throughout the European Community (EC), emphasize quality in the processes that create outputs, instead of just the outputs themselves. Iron Ore Company of Canada, for instance, responding to the requirement of one of its customers, British Steel, has become one of the first mining companies to meet the quality standard. Suppliers who meet the standards are highly desirable to customers who are themselves operating under the ISO or their national quality guidelines."
