A comparison of the amount of minus-28-mesh product produced by a standard grinding test procedure is provided for 45 non-metallic materials. The percentage of product, the weight of product per unit of energy used and the weight of product per mill revolution are shown. The results exhibited excellent reproducibility and demonstrated an accurate comparison of grindability for non-metallic materials.

Introduction In presenting this paper the author wishes to state that the opinions here given represent only his personal views. A general survey of the subject has been attempted, but such deductions as may have been drawn are not necessarily endorsed by the Company with which he is associated. The aeroplane as an instrument of transport is yet a novelty, for it is only twenty-five years since man first flew. This statement, by itself, may be very deceptive, for compared with the steam locomotive or even the auto-mobile, this infant in industry has made some remarkable showings. The 'actual performance' speed-curve of aircraft plotted over a ten-year period is rising faster than the 'expectancy' speed-curve of 1924 indicated, and it should be noted that, today, the possibilities of 600 miles per hour provoke less scepticism than did the prophecies of 400 miles per hour only a decade ago. Commencing with the remarkable achievement of raising one man into the air, aircraft with an all-up weight of 14 tons are now in daily use on the British airways, and recently a non-stop flight of 5,340 miles was accomplished in an aeroplane, without refuelling. More true than ever is the statement that the records of yesterday are commonplace tomorrow, for new ideas are today seized on and exploited to the utmost once the period of scepticism and doubt has been overcome. In fact, so many new ideas have been brought forward, during the past few years, and applied successfully in our economic life, that one may well ask if today we are not a little too impatient, too exacting in demands, forgetting that real worth-while progress -is attained by no short-cuts.

"Magnetic fields affect the growth of cultured cells and plants; however, limited information exists about their effects on vegetation performing environmental remediation. Constructed wetland mesocosms treating hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) wastewater exposed to low-intensity magnetic fields (60 Hz, 56.5 × 10-6 Tesla) produced 100% more biomass than the unexposed control. Nonetheless, they removed only 43 ± 27% of Cr(VI), compared to 60 ± 21% for the control. A Cr(VI) reduction expression was developed as a function of the magnetic field. The design and operation of constructed wetlands to treat mining wastewater can be corrected for magnetic field effects.RÉSUMÉ Les champs magnétiques affectent la croissance des cellules et des plantes cultivées; toutefois, il existe peu d’information quant à leurs effets sur la végétation utilisée à des fins d’assainissement environnementale. Les mésocosmes des marais artificiels traitant des eaux usées, contenant du chrome hexavalent (Cr(VI)), exposés à des champs magnétiques de faible intensité (60 Hz, 56,5 × 10-6 Tesla) ont produit 100 % plus de biomasse que le contrôle non exposé. A review of blast designs and improved blasting practices at the Ekati??Diamond Mine is presented along with the results of three blast-monitoring experiments. Blast monitoring was undertaken to investigate blast damage mechanisms in the mine's well jointed rock mass. Rock mass damage caused by production, pre-shear and wall control blasts was measured. Ekati??uses 270mm holes for production blasting, and 165mm holes loaded with a decoupled charge for pre-shearing. The production blasts are loaded with bulk emulsion / ANFO blends. The mine plan involves using 30m double benches. A 30m high pre-shear is drilled and blasted prior to the production blasting that is done with sequential 15m benches. This paper summarizes the monitoring equipment and data gathered to date.

"IntroductionAN EXCELLENT paper entitled Potash Discoveries in Western Canada (l) was presented to the 1948 Annual Meeting of the C.l.M. by L. Heber Cole, of the Department of Mines and Resources, Ottawa. In the intervening three and a half years, the search for oil and gas in Saskatchewan has added considerably to the information available on the occurrence of potash. It is the purpose of this paper to summarize the additional data. For greater clarity, it may be useful, first, to recapitulate some of the highlights of Mr. Cole's paper.Underlying the western plains of Canada there is a large deposit of sodium chloride, believed to be of early Devonian age. Associated with the sodium chloride are certain potash salts, primarily 'sylvinite,' a mechanical mixture of sodium chloride (halite) and potassium chloride (sylvite) crystals. The potash salts, when present, are usually near the top of the salt formation, though in at least one well they were found near the central part of the deposit. Cole reported on some seven wells in Saskatchewan which had encountered appreciable amounts of potash; these were the Ogema, Radville, Davidson Nos. 1 and 2, Prairie Salt Nos. 1 and 2, and Verbata wells. Depth of potash from surface ranged from 7,653 feet in the Radville well to a minimum of 3,466 feet in the Verbata well. Such depths do not compare favourably with those at which the potash is found in mines in the United States, France, and Germany, where about 1,000 feet is the average. The greatest concentration of sylvite encountered was in the Verbata well, where a bed 11 feet thick carried the equivalent of 21.64 per cent K20."

In July 2012, Hatch Ltd. and Air Products & Chemicals Inc. completed construction and commissioning of a 4000 tpd O2 cryogenic air separation unit (ASU) for Barrick Gold’s Pueblo Viejo Project located in central Dominican Republic. The ASU produces high pressure gaseous oxygen, which is used for the oxidation of refractory sulphide ore within the pressure oxidation (POX) circuit. As a result of the project’s remote location and tropical climate, many challenges were faced over the course of construction, commissioning and start-up of the ASU. These challenges included adequate preservation of equipment due to dusty and humid site conditions, final assembly and erection of the cryogenic distillation columns on site, limited spare parts inventory/availability, and an unfinished power source for plant commissioning. This paper discusses the steps taken by Hatch and Air Products to successfully design, construct, commission and start up the largest stand-alone ASU plant for a POX application in the metallurgical industry.

"The present study reports solvent extraction and separation of zinc from concentrated nickel sulfate solution. In our previous study, Zn and Cd in cold filter cake (CFC, 45-55% Zn, 11-16% Cd, and 2.5-4% Ni) were extracted by alkaline leaching followed by electrowinning processes respectively. The strip solution from electrowinning process, was a pregnant liquor solution (PLS) containing 16.8 g/l Ni and 4.2 g/l Zn. In this work, PLS is subjected to the solvent extraction process for separation of traces of Zn from high grade nickel. The zinc free raffinate containing 16.6 g/l Ni sulfate solution will flow to nickel electrowinning plant for cathode production. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) is the organic phase used in this study. The effects of various parameters such as organic phase concentration (10- 40 % v/v), pH (1.5-3), and temperature (25 and 45°) are investigated. Zinc over nickel separation factor increases by increasing pH from1.5 to 3. The results show that 98.7% of Zn was loaded at25°C O/A ratio of 1, pH 3, and 10% vol. D2EHPA. A 10 M NaOH is used for pH control. However, replacement of pH controlling agent with ammonia solution (25%. v/v) results in interesting observations. Ammonia addition, reduces the solubility of Ni2+ cations in solution. Nickel starts to precipitate from raffinate in a crystalline bluish-green form. The obtained crystals are characterized by XRF and identified to be nickel-bearing analog of boussingaultite, a rare sulfate mineral of nickel with chemical formula of Ni (NH4)2(SO4)2.6H2O. The crystallization rate of crystals is studied. It is a slow precipitation process with 75% in 4 days.INTRODUCTION Annually, many hydrometallurgical processes such as electrowinning, solvent extraction and leaching are applied to waste filter cakes in Zanjan, Iran. These additional processes on filter cakes are critical from both environmental and economic points of view. CFC (cold filter cake) is a toxic but valuable filter cake (45-55% Zn, 11-16% Cd, 2.5-4% Ni, and 0.2-1.5% Cu) produced in many zinc production plants. Our research group at Research and Engineering Company for Non-ferrous Metals (ReCo.), developed a series of hydrometallurgical methods for extraction of zinc, cadmium and nickel from CFC (Moradkhani, & Rasouli 2012). The recovery of zinc and cadmium with alkaline leaching and electrowinning was successfully studied. The strip sulfate solution from cadmium electrowinning unit, contains high concentration of nickel with some traces of zinc impurity. This pregnant liquor solution (PLS) was analyzed and reported to contain 16.8 g/l Ni and 4.2 g/l Zn. In this work, PLS is subjected to the solvent extraction process to separate Zn from nickel (Fig. 1). The organic phase stripping solution containing 4.2 g/l zinc and 200 ppm nickel can be circulated and used in the acidic leaching step. This generates nickel solution with high purity suitable for nickel cathode production."

This paper will outline the problems and solutions of the new generation washeries, as well as the recent technological advances which are being considered for future coal preparation plants. The subjects to be covered will include: - reasons for considering coal preparation plants; - raw coal crushing and handling systems; - types of coal cleaning equipment being used versus new equipment being considered; - fine coal circuit sizing; - clean coal centrifuging and dewatering; - thermal dryer problems and changes; - fine refuse dewatering systems; - clean coal storage problems and changes; - materials handling within the plants; and - control systems for preparation plants. The design and integration of the various circuits that form a modern coal preparation plant have led to the creation of an exciting new field of industrial research. As the need for energy sources increases, efficient methods of preparing coals for specific markets will become more important.

The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) has been studied for a long time as a non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technology for inspection of concrete structures. Currently, the most widely used technique for interpreting GPR data of concrete bridge decks is the one that based on the amplitudes measured at various interfaces such as asphalt-concrete, top rebar, or slab bottom. The assumption behind this technique is that a sound concrete deck should have the same reflection amplitude at these interfaces while any low number would indicate some sign of deterioration. Unfortunately, this assumption is not completely valid in most cases. As a consequence, the reported test results usually do not reflect real condition of concrete bridge decks in question. The main goal of this paper is therefore twofold: (1) to discuss the limitations of the amplitude analysis method, and (2) to propose a new model that interprets GPR data of concrete bridge decks. The model methodology is based on the comparison of GPR A-scans between two inspections, using the so-called correlation analysis. The results, indicated by the correlation coefficients, are then employed to develop a contour map that estimates different levels of deterioration. The model is then implemented to a case study in order to illustrate its methodology.

"Electrodeposited nanomaterials are increasingly implemented in advanced industrial applications in the aerospace, automotive, defence, electronic and energy sectors due to their outstanding physical, chemical and mechanical properties, including increased strength and wear resistance, and superb magnetic properties. As with the development of any class of new materials, the corrosion behaviour of these electrodeposits requires considerable attention. This presentation reviews major developments in the understanding of the corrosion behaviour of nanocrystalline metals, alloys and metal-matrix composites over the last 20 years, with emphasis on how their intrinsically high density of intercrystalline defects does not compromise their corrosion resistance as initially expected.INTRODUCTIONOver the past 20 years there have been considerable advances in the understanding of the corrosion behaviour of nanocrystalline metals, alloys and metal-matrix composites. In this paper, the corrosion properties of nanocrystalline nickel, cobalt, zinc, and copper and some of their alloys are reviewed with emphasis on how a reduction in grain size affects their corrosion behaviour in different environments.It is possible to synthesize nanocrystalline material with microstructural refinement down to the range of 1 to 100 nm using a large number of processing methods. There are five basic synthesis methods that can be used to classify the different techniques: vapor-phase processing, liquid-phase processing, solid-phase processing, chemical synthesis, and electrochemical synthesis. Depending on the synthesis method, different microstructures (equiaxed, textured), shapes, and forms (films, particles, bulk material) may be produced. In addition, other factors may be introduced (eg. residual porosity or amorphous phases), aside from microstructural refinement, which can contribute to the observed properties (Erb, 2010). In order to interpret and categorize the resulting microstructures, a dimensional structure modulation scheme was introduced by Siegel (1996) in which zero-dimensional nanomaterials refer to individual particles, clusters, etc. One-dimensionality results from a layered (less than 100 nm thick) structure. Two-dimensional nanomaterials are thin, layered structures containing grains (less than 100 nm) within each layer. Finally, three-dimensional nanomaterials are bulk structures with an average grain size less than 100 nm."

BROADLY, Yukon is divisible into three physiographic provinces which are extensions of the similar divisions in British Columbia that are there known as the Coastal system, the Interior system, and the Rocky Mountain system. South of Yukon to about the 50th parallel of latitude, the Coastal system consists solely of the Coast range, which, in Yukon, passes behind the St. Elias range and for the remainder of its course constitutes the most easterly portion of the Coastal system. The extension, in Yukon, of the Interior system of plateaus and mountains of British Columbia is commonly referred to as the Yukon plateau, and the extension of the Rocky Mountain system as the Mackenzie Mountains system. The Coast-Range province is largely made up of granitic intrusives; the Mackenzie Mountains province of folded sediments; and the intervening Yukon Plateau province of ancient metamorphic rocks, folded sedimentary rocks, volcanics, and intrusives. Almost the entire area dealt with in this article was subjected to glaciation and, in those parts where its full effect was experienced, the valleys were invaded by vast masses of ice which transported and scattered the stream gravels, with their gold content, so that, even where gold still remains in the old stream channels, it has become so buried under boulder clay and other glacial accumulations that it is, in most places, difficult to find, and, when found, may prove very expensive to mine. Most of the present rivers have done little more than cut new channels in the glacial debris, touching only here and there upon the subjacent rocky floor. The territory in Yukon adjacent to the section of the Alaska highway between Watson and Teslin lakes is for the most part unknown both topographically and geologically. From Teslin to Kluane, the highway travels a fairly well-mapped part of Yukon, but beyond that point, until White river is reached, the geology of the adjacent country has, largely, yet to be determined, particularly on the north side of the highway.

"IntroductionTHE OPINION is held by many persons outside the mining industry, and by some within it, that mine •operators customarily find it advantageous to mine •only the richer parts of orebodies and to leave behind, perhaps permanently, leaner material which could be mined only at a lesser profit. This opinion and the inference which might be drawn from it that 'gutting' of mineral resources is a common feruture• of the mining industry are prejudicial to the intertsts of the industry and deserve careful scrutiny. Oddly enough, a theory of mine economics which gives much support for the opinion was advanced first by members of the mining profession itself, has been repeated •several times in mining literature, and to my knowledge has never been adequately refoted.According to the theory, selective mining of the rich ore first on a large scale will yield substantial gains and these gains do not merely reflect the desire of 'money minded investors' for a quick return but derive from the logical application of compound interest rates and the concept of ;present value. W. O. Hotchkiss and R. D. Parks (1) illustrate the reasoning with a hypothetical example in which an orebody of 4,000,000 tons may be mined either in its entirety in forty years at $1.00 per ton profit or selectively with the recovery of only the richest half in twenty years at $1.50 per ton profit. They show that, with Hoskold rates of 4 and 8 per cent, the present value of profits from mining only the richer 2,000,000 tons exceeds the present value of profits :from mining the whole orebody by about 20 per cent."

Formulas relating economic optimum busbar cross sectional areas to busbar cost, electric price and financial parameters are reviewed and revised. Application of the formulas is illustrated with discussion of the appropriate choice of parameter values and the sensitivity of the optimum to the parameters. The extension of the single busbar concept to optimization of more complicated arrangements of bus for smelting pots is complicated by the constraint of obtaining a specified current distribution. An example problem illustrates the optimization of a section of a bus network containing a fork, with the imposed limitation of achieving a specified uniformity in the current. In cases where the current in the individual conductors may vary, Kelvin's law does not apply. Further extension of the technique to a full pot set of conductors poses additional problems which are discussed, but whose solution has not yet been accomplished. "MgCl2 brines present a number of potential advantages for the processing of saprolite ores for nickel production. With a chloride system it is economically requisite to recover hydrochloric acid, which can be performed in a more energy efficient manner by precipitation and subsequent decomposition, as compared with conventional pyrohydrolysis. In addition, concentrated MgCl2 solutions enhance the activity of acid used, allow atmospheric leaching at elevated temperature and inhibit magnesium dissolution, which reduces acid consumption and increases metal selectivity. Leaching and iron control experiments have been conducted in concentrated MgCl2 brines, up to 4.5 m, to determine the most amenable process conditions. INTRODUCTIONChloride metallurgy has received an increasing amount of attention in recent years, especially with respect to the treatment of nickel laterites. Although the limonitic fraction can sometimes be economically treated by High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL), acid-consumption problems are encountered with the higher magnesium content of the saprolite fraction. As magnesium does not hydrolyze under HPAL conditions, as iron and aluminum do, any sulphuric acid used to leach magnesium is subsequently neutralized and wasted. In addition, this magnesium must later be disposed of in some fashion, further complicating the process. The most common method used to process saprolite is the Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RKEF). This uses a kiln to dry and preferentially reduce nickel, before sending the calcine to an electric furnace. Although nickel recoveries are high, and the problems of acid consumption are avoided, the capital and energy costs associated with this process are high (de Bakker, 2011).The problems outlined above have led to the investigation of an atmospheric chloride process for the treatment of saprolite ores. The use of a chloride system presents a number of advantages, but also a few limitations. Metal chlorides tend to be very soluble, with a few notable exceptions (silver, mercury and lead), allowing for smaller processing equipment through more concentrated solutions. This solubility also serves to reduce the potential for scale formation. In addition, a hydrochloric acid leach is more aggressive than a comparable sulphuric acid system, and the activity of the hydrogen ion can be augmented by further chloride addition (Peek, 2011). This activity augmentation in concentrated chloride systems, first reported by Jansz, has repeatedly been referenced as a motivating factor behind chloride hydrometallurgy (Jansz, 1983; Harris and Magee, 2003; Harris et al., 2004; Demopoulos et al., 2008; McDonald and Whittington, 2008; Demopoulos, 2011; Peek, 2011; Verhulst and Lakshmanan, 2011). This activity increase allows a similar amount of acid to perform more in a concentrated solution than in a dilute solution, decreasing overall acid requirements. As such, much focus has been placed on leaching in concentrated chloride systems, or brines, using calcium, magnesium or sodium as the cation (McDonald and Whittington, 2008)."

"Pure cadmium sulphide was leached by the action of the bacterium Thiobacillus thiooxidans in the presence of finely divided sulphur. The influence of time, temperature, pH and concentration of inoculum on the extent of the cadmium extraction was studied. Under optimum conditions, up to 72 per cent of the cadmium could be dissolved over a six-week period. A cursory study of the role played by elemental sulphur seems to indicate that its presence is essential but that the sul1>huric acid produced through its oxidation is a minor factor in the cadmium extraction."

"Benzohydroxamic acid with double dentate can react with copper to form cyclic hydroxyl oxime acid copper chelate, indicating a good selectivity for copper oxide minerals flotation, especially for malachite. The flotation results of the pure malachite mineral show a strong synergistic collecting effect between hydroximic acid and xanthate at a ratio of 3.5:1, achieving a malachite recovery of 95.5% when certain sodium sulphide is used as a sulphidizing agent in the optimal pH range. Thanks to the synergistic collecting effect, the flotation recovery of malachite of a real refractory ore flotation ,can reach over 92% under the optimum condition, a 12% higher than the recovery achieved with the conventional collectors. In industrial application, the flotation of the copper oxide minerals is improved , leading to a high efficiency utilization of copper oxide resources.INTRODUCTIONBeneficiation of copper oxide ore is one of the recognized challenges in mineral processing industry. Copper oxide ore is a vital component of copper resource in the world, which has abundant reserves. Majority of sulphide deposits has oxidized zone on the top, and some deposits are oxidized to become the large and medium-sized oxide deposits (Willam & Chavez, 2001). Most copper oxide ores have problems in processing such as high slime consumption, poor floatability, complex ore property and low flotation recovery, so it is of great significance in beneficiation of copper oxide ores to develop an efficient collector, especially for malachite (Fu & Gu, 1997; Wen, 2010; Riet, Kier & Elford, 1980). At present, sulphidization-xanthate flotation is the most important method for treating copper oxide ore. In recent years, due to the decreasing ore grade, the utilization of refractory copper oxide ore draws more and more attention (Zhou, 2003), except for sulphidization-xanthate method, chelating flotation method (Lu, 2009), chemical beneficiation method (Lenormed, Salman & Yoon, 1979), microwave radiation flotation method, hydrothermal sulphidization-flotation method (Mao, Wen & Fang, 2014) and ammonia leaching of sulphide precipitation-flotation method (Lekang, Stevik & Bomo, 2003) have occurred."

Early detection of spontaneous combustion is of utmost importance in underground coal mining to prevent major disruptions of production and to ensure a safer working environment. This paper presents the work done in developing a suitable system for the early detection of heating in a hydraulic coal mine. Laboratory studies on the products of oxidation for Balmer 10 seam coal showed that a significant amount of carbon monoxide is produced during the early stages of heating and that detection methods based on the analysis of other gases, such as hydrogen, ethane or ethylene, are not a better alternative for this coal. The four-point carbon monoxide monitoring system recently installed at the hydraulic mine is discussed in this paper. It is believed that by studying the trend of carbon monoxide concentration in the mine air, it will be possible to detect heating at an early stage. Field tests carried out so far have indicated that infra-red technology will prove to be a powerful tool in the hydraulic mine, particularly for locating hidden oxidation or fire in cracks, fissures, underground workings and coal outcrop areas before it spreads extensively. The project is jointly sponsored by EMR, CANMET, Mining Research Laboratories and Kaiser Resources Ltd.

The permanent mould process, which is a favoured process for producing premium quality aluminium casting, is rarely used to produce magnesium alloy parts. This may be attributed different factors such as: the reservation with which the automotive industry considers using magnesium in structural castings; also the relative hot shortness of most magnesium alloys when compared to aluminium A356/357 is another factor. A third reason stems from the fact that the "heat content" of magnesium is much less than that of aluminium, resulting in the difficulty, for a relatively slow process such as permanent mould (versus pressure die casting), to reach a mould dynamic equilibrium temperature sufficiently high to avoid premature freezing and misruns. The present work will address this problem by carrying out controlled cycling of a laboratory mould, poured with aluminium and magnesium alloys. The influence of insulation of the mould and artificial electric heating on the run-in mould temperature will be determined experimentally. A thermal model will be sought for these thermal devices that will allow to predict the thermal behaviour of moulds of different geometry before a single casting is poured. The model will be tested on an industrial casting in a workshop environment.

"Since the Mathew's method for open stope design was first proposed by Golder Associates in 1980 it has been applied at a number of mine sites in Canada. The initial hypothesis was based on a relatively small amount of data and the intervening period has allowed the collection of a significant amount of new data to test the validity of the method.This paper examines a brief history of the evolution of rock mass classification systems to provide background and emphasize their empirical and non-rigorous approach. It also presents the new data which appear to indicate that the initial hypothesis was reasonably good. The modification to the original graph proposed by Potvin is discussed as well as the applicability of the method to predicting the onset of caving. The original graph has been updated and has been subdivided into four zones described as ""stable""; ""potentially unstable""; ""potential major failure""; and ""potential caving"". The method is recommended as a useful open stoping design tool provided it is recognized that it is not a rigorous design method.Finally the paper proposes a recommended approach for application of the method by would-be users and addresses some typical pitfalls that may be encountered."
