A low grade, refractory ore gold mine with high striping ratio such as at Macraes is always challenged in ways to improve margins. Common practice approaches used at OceanaGold Ltd Macraes are to maximise grade delivery, optimise recovery and reduce unit costs, as well as take any opportunities to incorporate new technologies and implement enhanced commercial strategies.   The Business Improvement (BI) programme was implemented across the Macraes operations in late 2003 and is being rolled-out to all other parts of the business. The core focus of BI at OGL is to: +        increase revenue, +        reduce cost, and +        improve processes.   A dedicated BI team comprising of a manager, team leaders and business analysts were engaged to identify and manage a series of opportunities to reduce operating expenses, optimise capital outlays and generate extra revenue. The Business Improvement Programme, though in its formative phase, has begun a cultural change within the organisation. Many people are starting to challenge the way they do things and are looking for ways to continually improve business performance.   The BI team encompasses individuals from different departments who can offer the diverse skill set necessary to produce intended results. The current team is made up of a BI manager, BI Team Leaders in Mining and Processing and analysts from Mining, Processing, Commercial and Plant Maintenance workgroups. A team member has recently been formally trained as a Six Sigma Black Belt. ] The BIÆs team role is to assist in the establishment of project management processes for each improvement idea. In addition the team will assist in tracking implementation, identifying and unblocking restrictions and limitations as well as setting up metrics to quantify the level of benefit returned and sustained.   From a more strategic point of view, the BI team is advancing the Business Improvement capability of the company by developing long term Communication and Training strategies. These strategies will set the direction of BI initiatives in the years to come to: +        educate the OGL workforce in basic BI techniques, +        assist the OGL workforce in applying basic BI techniques, +        communication the direction of BI in OGL, and +        close the information feedback loop to facilitate transparent communication between the OGL workforce and the BI team.

Mining companies around the world devote considerable effort to production reconciliation and metallurgical accounting. However, although sampling, weighing and analysis methods used to obtain the raw data for metal balancing continue to improve, they are still areas that are sadly neglected. Using the latest metallurgical accounting package to improve metal balancing is fundamentally flawed if the data used are unreliable in the first place. The basic rule for correct sampling is that all parts of the material being sampled must have an equal probability of being collected and becoming part of the final sample for analysis. If this rule is not respected, sampling bias can easily be introduced. Unlike precision, which can be improved by replication, bias cannot be reduced once it is present. Sampling and sample processing procedures must therefore be carefully designed both to minimise bias and to obtain acceptable precision. The most suitable sampling location is the discharge point of a process stream, where increments can be obtained by taking a complete cross-section of the stream with a sample cutter. Sampling devices that take only part of the stream may introduce serious bias and must be avoided. The moisture content and wet mass of the material being sampled are of similar importance to chemical analyses for determining metal content. The accurate determination of moisture content is particularly difficult, because the moisture content of samples can change after the sample is taken, eg due to moisture evaporation. Hence, moisture samples need to be taken quickly and placed in sealed bags or containers that are impervious to moisture. The moisture content should then be determined without delay. To determine wet mass, a range of weighing methods are used in industry, including weighbins, weighbridges, conveyor weightometers and platform scales. The precision and accuracy of these methods vary considerably, so it is important to select a method with the appropriate precision and ensure that the weighscale is well maintained and regularly calibrated.

edicted increase in, Aluminium production and the possibility of a diminishing supply of petroleum coke for anode electrodes in alumina reduction cells makes it desirable to find alternative electrode materials. Brown coal char, with a lower ash content and with an elemental purity similar to petroleum coke, has been produced by leaching in hydrochloric acid, washing with water and charring at 115000. The cost of processing is estimated to be competitive with petroleum coke. Without further processing the bulk density and real density were undesirably low, but. by briquetting the coal before charring and crushing, the bulk density was improved to 92 per cent of the petroleum coke value and the Particle density was improved to 92 per cent of the density of petroleum coke by water-displacement or 75 per cent by mercury displacement. Pre-baked electrodes were prepared from the char alone, mixtures of petroleum coke and char and from petroleum coke alone, all bonded with coal tar pitch. The electrodes were tested for the usual physical properties and were, evaluated for performance in a laboratory size alumina reduction cell. Electrodes based on brown coal char alone were found to be inferior in physical properties, and performance, but mixtures of the char and petroleum coke, despite poorer density, electrical resistivity and carbon consumption on a theoretical basis, in performance tests gave up to 17 per cent better carbon consumption per weight of aluminium produced and 21 percent better electrical current efficiency than the electrodes based on petroleum coke alone. It is suggested that larger scale tests are warranted.

During trials which began in May 2005, traditional steel dump bodies for transporting iron ore on 220-tonne haul trucks at a Labrador iron ore mine were compared to a novel rubber suspended dump body. Loads were measured and compared over some 93 700 loads, representing more than 20 Mt transported. Maintenance costs and downtime were also measured over the course of the trial, which lasted nearly one year. This paper outlines the parameters and results of the trials. Parameters measured included payload and production improvements, carry-back reduction, downtime due to body maintenance, and wear on the floor of the suspended dump body. These parameters were then compared to those for conventional steel dump bodies in use at the mine, and conclusions were drawn. The resulting comparisons were significantly positive in favour of the new suspended dump bodies, confirming that each truck could haul an additional 41 000 tonnes per year, that downtime hours could be considerably reduced, and that body availability and service life can be extended through use of the suspended dump body. There was also a high level of operator acceptance of the suspended dump bodies due to less loading shock and a smoother ride.

Kidston Gold Mine is a 3.5 million tonnes per year operation located 280 kilometres west of Townsville, Queensland. Kidston's ore body consists of 44.3 million tonnes graded at 1.79 grams per tonne gold and 2.22 grams per tonne silver. Full production commenced in March, 1985. During the remainder of 1985, Kidston milled 3.77 million tonnes of ore and produced 213,614 ounces of gold.The ore is comprised of granodiorite, polymictic and volcanic breccias. The degree of oxidation of the rock influences the milling capacity and therefore determines the cut-off grade; ore is categorised as oxide, transition and fresh. The milling rates are 15,400, 12,000 and 9,600 tonnes per day for oxide, transition and fresh ore respectively.The ore is treated in a conventional cyanidation/ carbon-in-pulp plant (CIP). The plant consists of a primary crusher, semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mills, leach circuit and carbon-in-pulp circuit. Carbon stripping and dore smelting are done on site. The major difference between the Kidston plant and other Australian CIP plants is that a cyclone separation and washing circuit rejects half of the dry tonnage as a sand tail prior to CIP treatment. This difference allows the CIP circuit at Ki.dston to be smaller and makes the CIP less sensitive to the grind circuit product size.

The Beruang Copper-Gold Deposit is located very near the centre of Kalimantan in Indonesia. It is a dacitic tuff hosted deposit currently being explored by Kalimantan Gold Inc of Canada. Exploration activity to date at Beruang has been focused on the Main Zone, which is defined by a north-south elongate, 1 + 1.5 km zone of anomalous copper and gold, and intense phyllic alteration. The disseminated sulfides responsible for the anomalous copper values produce a moderate to high chargeability signature. Phyllic alteration is overlain at high levels, and on the western edge of the Main Zone, by advanced argillic alteration. The dacite tuffs hosting the mineralisation are cut by post-mineralisation dacite dykes that are delineated by ground magnetics and geological mapping. Base metals, principally zinc and lead, form broad halos around the Main Zone. These metals are incorporated in massive NE-trending, polymetallic mineralisation that outcrops to the north and south of the Main Zone. IP survey results highlight the highly pyritic NNE-trending shear zone, which hosts most of the copper mineralisation in the Main Zone. A high chargeability anomaly at depth in the central-east part of the Main Zone is interpreted to be the source for mineralising hydrothermal fluids. This is suggested by zonations in alteration and mineralisation. A deep chargeability anomaly can be correlated with the downward plunge of a pyritic breccia, encountered at shallow levels in drillholes, and is a potential breccia pipe target. Compilation and inversion modelling of the IP results has yielded some interesting drill targets.

Mineral occurrences of the Hillgrove Au-Sb-W district are hosted in late Palaeozoic polydeformed, hornfelsed metasediments and Permo-Carboniferous granitoids of the NewEngland Orogen. In excess of 204 individual occurrences have been identified to date with the mineralisation developed as strike extensive (>20 km of known veining) and potentially depth extensive steeply dipping fissures. These are contained within an elongate area measuring some 9 km by 6 km in surface dimensions. Recorded gold production of 720 000 ounces along with current resources in the order of 340 000 ounces highlight the significance of this district. Historical antimony production is estimated at in excess of 50 000 metric tonnes. Significant tungsten of over 2000 t in the form of scheelite has also been produced from the field. Mineralisation is developed in veins, vein breccias, sheeted veins, network stockworks and as alteration sulfide haloes to the main structures. The vast majority of fissures are subvertical and vary in widths of up to 20 m in places. Paragenetic studies have previously indicated that the earliest mineralising event was a scheelite-bearing phase of quartz veining. Subsequent phases of arsenopyrite-pyrite-quartz-carbonate veining were accompanied by gold and minor base metal sulfides. Alteration is typically sericite-ankerite-quartz. Overprinting stibnite-quartz veining with gold-electrum, aurostibite and arsenopyrite form an important subsequent phase. Veining can be inferred from historical records to extend for vertical depths of over 1 km.

The aim of the research was to investigate the feasibility of using an impedance cell and ratio-transformer bridge to measure solids content in coal slurry pipelines. It appeared that this technique could be developed to measure variations in conductance which correlate with solids content. Successful implementation of the measurement technique would have a variety of applications in existing coal wash plants and the potential for automatic process control. A small pilot plant was designed for a feasibility study. This was a closed loop system in which the coal was uniformly dispersed in a tank with a variable speed agitator and then circulated through an external pipe returning to the top of the tank. The impedance cell was located near the end of the external pipe. Slurry concentrations were varied from clean tap water to 50 per cent solids by weight with the addition of weighed quantities of dry coal dust. Ratio-transformer bridge measurements showed that variations in individual observations were equivalent to measurement errors of about two per cent. These probably reflect variations in concentration of the mixture in the pipe. Data for increments in concentration of one per cent indicate that this is about the limit of resolution of the current system. The paper discusses the principles of operation of the impedance cell and measurement system. Results from the pilot study and proposed improvements in the impedance cell design are examined.

AND INTRODUCTION The Lochiel coal deposit, a large Tertiary soft brown coal deposit in the mid north of South Australia, is currently being investigated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) as a potential source of fuel for a base load power station. Feasibility studies indicated that the proposed dragline method of overburden removal was viable but economically sensitive to both highwail and dump batter angles. The unusual properties of the unconsolidated overburden sediments and the groundwater regime posed a number of intimately related hydrogeological and geotechnical questions which were addressed before and during the excavation of a trial pit. All strata at Lochiel are of soil strength, and artesian aquifers occur above and below the coal. From the initial evaluation of the deposit a number of hydrogeological questions were defined. These related to the rate at which the pore pressure in the silts is reduced by dewatering, the extent of the reduction in pore pressure due to prestripping, and the feasibility of dewatering and depressurising carbonaceous silty sand sequences. The site of the trial pit was selected to answer these and other questions from the basis of a detailed geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical understanding. The trial pit dewatering system simulated a full scale mine dewatering system and included ten pumped wells, twenty drainage wells, and nearly 400 monitoring instruments. It operated from September 1986 to June 1987. The excavation was carried out between February and May 1987.

In order to avoid costly moisture penalties on coal shipments and to minimise rail freight costs, screen bowl centrifuges were selected and installed in the Mount Thorley Coal Preparation Plant for dewatering fine coal product. The Mount Thorley fine coal circuit consists of desliming the -0.5 mm (ww) fine coal in two stages of classifying cyclones prior to recovery by froth flotation. Provision has been made to bypass the flotation circuit with the classified flotation feed reporting directly to product and the centrifuge dewatering circuit has been designed to handle either flotation feed or flotation product. Major mechanical failures of the gearboxes and the ceramic tiling occurred early in the operation life of the machines which led to design changes being made to achieve satisfactory operation. This paper discusses the operating experience at Mount Thorley with respect to both mechanical and metallurgical performance of the screen bowl centrifuges since their installation in 1985.

The aquifer at Phosphate Hill, north-west Queensland, presents special management challenges. The site contains a phosphate rock mine, fertilizer plant and camp. All of the site water is provided by the Duchess Embayment Aquifer, located within the Burke River Outlier of the Georgina Basin. The Duchess Embayment is a triangular shaped, Cambrian marine sedimentary basin consisting of siliceous and calcareous phosphorites, shales, siltstones and sandstones. It is fault-bounded on all sides and has a regional dip of 5¦E. The aquifer is largely confined to the siliceous facies of the Beetle Creek Formation. It has a very flat potentiometric surface and an average thickness of 45 m with confining beds above and below. The siliceous facies derives from weathering of the calcareous phase and is highly transmissive while the calcareous zone itself contains less water and is dependent upon interconnecting fractures for its permeability. Recharge appears to occur where the siliceous facies crops out around the edges of, and within, the Embayment. Aquifer management issues revolve around two points: successful dewatering of the orebody for mining; and efficient management to maintain water quality and ensure supply over the predicted 30-year life of the project. Current operations are extracting water at levels much below that originally estimated. This is having a detrimental effect on mine dewatering with the SWL lowering at a rate slower than anticipated. As a result, ore parcels are now beginning to intersect the water table, providing a major constraint to the mining plan. The aquifer drawdown cone is extensive and very flat so to keep the water table at an appropriate level for mining the management plan will include more aggressive dewatering to lower the level of the entire aquifer. The additional water will either be disposed of downstream or stored in a holding dam or via the use of artificial storage and recharge. Water resource management will also need to maintain the current quality. About 37 per cent of the water currently extracted forms the low chloride supply required by the ammonia plant and the power station. This ratio is expected to remain applicable under any future operating conditions but the low chloride resource is restricted so will require prudent management to enable the supply to continue. At current usage rates aquifer recharge versus use will need careful monitoring to ensure that the resource remains viable in the long-term.

This paper investigates dry drilling as a feasible alternative to meet current requirements for improvements in mining productivity in an increasingly competitive world.A field test program was conducted in the surface facilities of a hard rock mine in Sudbury, Canada, to investigate the potential use of dry drilling in underground bulk mining as a conceivably faster and more economical method than wet drilling. The test work consisted of the monitoring of advance rates and bit life while a series of 165 mm diameter holes, wet and dry, were drilled with compressed air at both mine (0.69 MPa) and high (1.72 MPa) pressure levels. The results indicate that penetration rates can be increased by approximately 24 per cent by drilling dry with high air pressure and by approximately 27 per cent by drilling dry with mine air as compared with wet drilling under the same conditions. Dry drilling also has the effect of increasing bit life by up to 69 per cent. An economic analysis for typical hard rock mines indicated that drilling productivity and cost savings can be increased by approximately 23 per cent when dry drilling is utilised.The testing program indicates that dry drilling has the potential to become a feasible technique with regard to performance, productivity and costs.

Point load testing for irregular rock specimens was studied to determine the relationship between tensile and compressive strengths, drill penetration rate and other rotary drilling parameters. The DH-l type point load tester was developed and more than 2 000 irregular specimens of over 60 kinds of rock from 16 mines and quarries were tested. The effects of size, shape and number of samples on the point load strength index were investigated, using regression analysis. Experiments were carried out to investigate the relationship between point load strength index and uniaxial compressive strength on 29 kinds of rock. The relationship between these values and the drill penetration rate for rotary and percussion drills is discussed.

This is the seventh major symposium organised by Illawarra Branch over the past five years and the fifth dealing with various aspects of coal. It is clear that all of you here need no convincing that black is beautiful! This symposium is on a broader canvas, covering the overall field of occurrence, preparation and utilization of black coal throughout Australia. It is thus the most comprehensive treatment of the subject by the Institute since the symposium organized in 1950 by the Sydney Branch with the co-operation of the then newly formed branches in Newcastle, Illawarra, Central Western N.S.W. and Southern Queensland, all of which shared coal as a major interest. The 1950 symposium was adopted as a volume in the series of seven published by the Fifth Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress in 1953. This historical reminiscence brings to our minds the circumstances in which these new Institute branches were formed. This happened in the year of the presidency of the late Frank Hockey, and at the time the Australian black coal industry was in many ways at a very low ebb. It was the time of extreme shortage of coal following World War II, and the industry was beset by industrial unrest on such a scale that daily bulletins were posted listing the number of idle pits, of idle miners and of tons of lost production. There could not, of course, be any thought of export marketing. Some of the more picturesque bulletins recorded the number of pits at which the ceremonial emptying of billies took place, and the number of pits at which the aroma of the horses' breath was insupportable. At an Institute conference at the time it is on record that the late lamented Austin Edwards, that tireless mineral researcher, author and editor, in his gentle way chided the personnel of the industry and the members of the Institute for having allowed a situation to develop in which a whole generation of Australian children could grow up without ever having seen coal or knowing what it was. It is sad that most children and most Australians have still never seen coal, and think of it as something dirty and uninteresting. The desperate situation of the black coal industry inspired moves by people in industry and in governments, whose plans and efforts have been recorded elsewhere, to modernize coal mining methods, to introduce coal preparation, and generally to restore the mines and the mining communities and to re-cast the steel industry and electricity generation. Amelioration of the traditionally troubled industrial relations was an integral part of this overall programme, and whilst one would wish this aspect had progressed further the situation has, in fact, improved immensely. New investment in exploration, mining, preparation, transport and utilization both by the existing coal mining groups and by new entrants, Australian and overseas, have played a large part in bringing about the transformation of the industry to such a point that Australian needs are being fully met and a large export market is being supplied - a situation that few would have dared to hope for in those dark post-war days. Forecasts of exports from New South Wales and Queensland show coal becoming a dominant foreign exchange earner for an indefinite term. Old King Cole may have vanished from our children's nursery rhymes but King Coal is here to stay, providingthat costs in the industry can be kept within competitive limits. It is all too easy for an industry to price itself out of the export market by inflation, by increased costs for a variety of reasons, and through currency readjustments. A second proviso is that we must continue to encourage a balanced attitude to environmental matters.

Application of thermal oxidation is considered a promising technique in reducing fugitive methane gas from ventilation air methane (VAM). A typical thermal oxidiser operates with diluted methane and converts it to less potent greenhouse gases. However, having a thermal oxidiser in the vicinity of the coalmine exhaust shaft is a major safety concern as its high operation temperature increases the likelihood of accidental fire and explosion. The aim of this study is to investigate the application and effectiveness of side venting technique in reduction of deflagration consequences caused by methane gas. To address this importance a series of experiments were conducted on a detonation tube designed and fabricated as part of larger scale VAM Abatement safety project. The experimental work was carried out into two stages: examine the flame and explosion properties in a large-scale detonation tube to get reliable data; and then design and employ a venting system into the detonation tube to verify the effectiveness and performance of the venting against the flame and explosion.Results corresponding to this study show that the side vent duct with venting coefficient magnitude of 37 had a significant influence on methane flame deflagration and the explosion characteristics. The maximum pressure rise at the detonation tube reduced approximately 20 per cent to 32 per cent by applying the side venting duct. Also, the data shows that the venting damped the pressure oscillation after the flame deflagration which eventually reduced the system instability. Nickel phytomining is a low cost alternative to traditional nickel mining and a complementary process to existing mining operations in areas with low-grade nickel soils or nickel waste material. The process of nickel phytomining consists of growing selected hyperaccumulator plant species (‘metal crops’) on Ni-rich (ultramafic) soils, followed by harvesting and incineration of the biomass to produce a ‘bio-ore’ from which Ni salts or Ni metal may be recovered (Chaney et al, 2007). The ‘metal crops’ are selected on the basis of high biomass yield combined with high Ni concentrations (>1 per cent) in the above-ground biomass (Chaney et al, 2007). Currently, Alyssum murale and A. corsicum have been used for Ni phytomining trials, mainly undertaken in Albania and USA (Bani et al, 2015; Li et al, 2003), while the agronomy of <10 species has been tested in temperate regions (Nkrumah et al, 2016). Nickel phytomining has high economic potential; however, large-scale demonstrations are needed to provide ‘real-life’ evidence for commercial operations (van der Ent et al, 2015). Unrealised opportunities exist in tropical regions for commercial scale Ni phytomining. To date, the agronomy of tropical ‘metal crops’ has not been tested. Prior to resource modelling, sample scale data is normally grouped into spatial domains that reflect zones of homogenous properties. These domains are usually based on a combination of grade and other variables that reflect, for example, geology and alteration, or variables known to correlate with properties of the samples that affect downstream processing. Domaining and wire-framing sample scale data is a time intensive task and it is difficult to track more than a few variables simultaneously while establishing domain boundaries. This is especially the case in operations with complex data, for example, a combination of multi-element assaying of total element concentrations, and/or phase specific assaying such as sulfide sulfur, carbonate carbon, cyanide available gold, and/or downhole geophysical measurements. To minimise unintentionally grouping samples of contrasting properties within the same domain, unsupervised statistical methods are available that can automatically identify samples atypical of the domain, both as univariate tests, and as tests that take correlation within the domain into account. Unsupervised methods in this context means methods of identifying atypical samples that require just the selection of the domain and input variables. Thresholds are derived robustly from the data itself, and the results are therefore repeatable and operator independent. Atypical samples may be thought of as outliers, ie, samples that are separated from the ‘majority’ of the data. If these atypical samples are themselves spatially associated, they may be allocated to an alternative existing domain or allocated to a new domain. Care should always be taken to ensure that identified outliers are due to meaningful causes and not due to data coding and storage errors, although the identification of the latter is still valuable. *This is an abstract only. The lignite deposits of Southland and Central Otago are a potentially significant energy resource for New Zealand. Current estimates put the technically mineable lignite reserves at 5.3 billion tonnes, which is more than ten times the energy content of the Maui gas field. Thus, the strategic importance of the lignite as a basis for maintaining current levels of self-sufficiency in transport fuels, or as a possible feedstock for electricity generation, deserves full investigation. The full extent of the lignite deposits was only recently established as the result of a scout drilling programme undertaken between 1976 and 1979 by the Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy, and from companion studies conducted by the New Zealand Geological Survey. These discoveries of large quantities of lignite coupled, at the time, with rising oil prices, raised the prospect of their development for production of transport fuels.

"The Batu Hijau copper/gold mine, operated by PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara, is located in the south-western part of Sumbawa Island, Indonesia, and is situated ~10 km from the south coast at an altitude of ~450 m above sea level. The mine became fully operational by year 2000 and processes approximately 120 000 t of ore per day that contain an average of 0.53 per cent copper and 0.4 per tonne (g/t) gold. Tailings management at the mine includes a deep-sea tailings placement (DSTP) system that discharges tailings through a pipeline via an outfall located at a depth of 125 m at the head of the submarine Senunu Canyon (Figure 1).The environmental impact assessment undertaken prior to approval of the DSTP evaluated both on-land tailings storage facility (TSF) and DSTP options for tailings management. Negative attributes of the on-land TSF included removal of approximately 2300 ha of forest/agricultural land, the potential relocation of >2000 people from their communities, the high average annual rainfall (>2500 mm) and potential for earthquakes presenting challenges for water management and creating a long-term risk of failure. The final choice and Indonesian Government’s approval of DSTP was also influenced by the close proximity of the deep submarine canyon to the mine. The Batu Hijau mine is one of the larger examples of DSTP in the world and deposits tailings at the greatest depth. The depth of the main canyon increases to >2000 m within 20 km of the coast, and to >3000 m approximately 50 km from the coast.The DTSP at Batu Hijau must comply with an environment management plan (EMP) and environment monitoring plan of permit stipulation that approved its commencement in 2000; updated in 2010 and 2015. The environmental management objectives were to avoid impacts to highly productive components of the ecosystem such as coral reefs, mangroves, surface waters and fisheries, and confinement of impacts to areas of low biological productivity. In the vicinity of the DSTP outfall and within the Senunu Canyon, the management plan predicted significant adverse impacts from the DSTP on the marine ecosystem in the form of: reduction in sea water quality due to elevated turbidity and dissolved copper concentrations burial of benthic organisms a reduced habitat for demersal fish.Recovery of the pelagic and benthic ecosystem to preoperating conditions was predicted to occur within the first two years after operations cease. The CSIRO has performed due diligence studies to independently verify compliance with permits and evaluate new monitoring objectives (Apte et al, 2004; Simpson et al, 2010; Angel et al, 2015), and has performed assessments of environmental monitoring data on the tailings footprint and ore stockpile processing against the above environmental objectives (Simpson and Angel, 2015).CITATION:Angel, B M, Simpson, S L and Waworuntu, J, 2016. PT Freeport Indonesia is currently building the DOZ mine. It is a 25 000 tonne/day block caving operation which is scheduled to reach designed production levels by the fourth quarter of 2002. This paper describes some of the issues and challenges faced by the operation when introducing a new undercut method part way through the project. Advantages and disadvantages are discussed as well as the expected benefits of the new method.
