A thousand writers have harped upon the wondrous nature of the inventive faculty. They realise that man is a creator, and that capital and labour alike are, and will always be impotent without machinery and processes that is invention. What Bacon has said is echoed by them all, "the introduction of new inventions seemeth to be the very chiefest of human actions. The benefit of new inventions may extend to all mankind-they make all men happy without injury to 'any' they are new creations and imitations of God's own works." My remarks will occupy another field I will refer to some of those features of the Patent Laws of different countries, which prevent the use of new inventions, oppress the development or inventive' genius, and diminish human happiness and progress' Wherever Patent Laws are framed and administered upon wrong principles, these results are inevitably found. A concise, complete, common-sense comparison of the chief Patent Laws of the world cannot easily be found but to avoid seeing scrappy, misleading references to Patent Law in the press particularly the English-would be equally difficult. Writers who are considered authorities so frequently make minor issues prominent and so uniformly fail to give weight to fundamental principles that the effect on the public is to mislead.

Arsenic-containing waste was dissolved into molten slags and the leaching behaviour of the quenched arsenic-doped slags (containing up to 2.3 wt per cent arsenic) was ascertained to evaluate the potential of this method as a means for arsenic disposal. The leaching behaviour was evaluated using acetic and sulphuric/nitric acid based solutions.From short-term (18 hour) leach tests, the amounts of arsenic in the leach solutions were found generally to decrease with an increase in the Fe(III)/Fe(total) ratio of the slag or an increase in pH of the leach solution. The amount of arsenic in solution increased with an increase in the slag basicity, the slag arsenic concentration or the surface area of the slag exposed to the leach solution. From longer term leach tests (up to 40 weeks) in the pH range 5 to 8, the arsenic remaining in the leach solution was believed to be controlled by sorption processes. The sorbent was an iron oxide-rich material which had the capacity to lower the arsenic concentration in the leach bottles to well below 1 ppm in some cases. At a leach solution pH over 9, the arsenic concentration in the solution increased with time, although the rate of solubilisation was much slower due to the high pH.Slags have the potential to stabilise arsenic and prevent it entering the environment provided attention is paid to the slag chemical composition and oxygen potential.

In the case when the number of independent variables is greater, a careful design for carrying out tests has to be made in order to obtain, with the smallest possible number of tests, as much as possible neutral information about the influence of independent variables on the dependent ones. Only on the basis of such design and its statistical analysis it is possible to come to right conclusions about the function of the whole system. The influence of pressure, temperature, humidity and granulation of the coal upon the resistance to pressure and the water absorption of the briquettes has been tested, with the aim to examine how each of the two dependent variables changes depending on the values assumed by any of the four independent variables and which of the mentioned independent variables significantly influences the dependent ones. The full factorial design with 16 experiments and the central composite design with 27 experiments have been applied. The influence of the independent variables upon the dependent ones has been examined by applying the analysis of variance. The influence values of individual factors and their interaction upon the dependent variables have been stated as well as coefficients of curvilinear equation.

Water is an integral and essential part of mining business. Two issues crucial in the management of this resource, scarcity and excess, are increasing awareness of the importance of water and changing the value perceptions of the industry because they affect both the existence and continuation of the business. Therefore its value should be reflected in the water management that is practised on site. Historically water in mining has been perceived to be of low value so management practices have not been good or well implemented. Political and social transformation in South Africa has been accompanied by the promulgation of new legislation. South African water law is now underpinned by Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) principles. It impacts water pricing, provides for water pollution charges, prioritises water users, has specific mining and water related components and requires water licensing as part of the licence to mine. Mining no longer has a priority on water resources and has to compete with other water users to gain access to resources. New institutional arrangements are being put in place to implement the regulations. All this requires a paradigm shift in miningÆs view of water. Generally the sector is still catching up with the new requirements, principles and philosophies. However, the way in which South African mining values water is changing. This is demonstrated in partnerships between the industry and other water users. These partnerships are Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) in practice and they achieve sustainable development goals. These partnerships are essential for mining to stay in business, expand operational capacity, reduce impacts, prevent legal action and reduce reputational risks.

The purpose of this paper is to outline the equipment used for diamond drilling at Mount Isa, together with alterations and recent improvements therein. As the majority of the drilling is carried out with machines running at relatively high speeds using XRN blast hole bits, the paper is mainly devoted to this branch of drilling.Because diamond bit costs constitute the major expense, a considerable amount of research into bit design has been carried out, and in several instances, costs per foot have shown an appreciable decrease in spite of rising manufacturing costs and higher diamond prices. Equipment performance has at times been erratic due to delays in delivery and occasionally because of faulty parts, but in general the position has improved by keeping in close contact with the manufacturers.BLASTHOLE DRILLING MACHINESThe standard blasthole diamond drill is the 'E-500' two cylinder air powered model manufactured by Mineral Drillers Limited. Several of the older pattern JV41 are still in use, but are being retired as they wear out.. Machines are repaired in the underground diamond drill shop.The normal feed gears used when drilling in lead shales are 350 top gear and 450 low gear-actually 357 and 438 revolutions per inch of advance respectively. The 300 gear was commonly used several years ago, but it was found that bit footages could be increased without any appreciable drop in penetration rate by reducing to the 350 gear. The past century has seen the development and commercialisation of many new pyrometallurgical processes based on gas injection. The driving force behind this trend in smelting and refining technology was the increased productivity and resulting increase in capital utilisation achievable. However, measurement of system variables is not easy and their effect on the rate of the reactions involved is not well characterised. One of the critical parameters is the gas-liquid interfacial area produced by gas injection. Related variables such as bubble size and velocity, and gas hold-up fractions in aqueous systems have been measured using combinations of physical (visual, audio and electrical) and chemical techniques. Models have been developed relating interfacial area to physical properties and operating variables and attempts made to extrapolate these to high temperature, liquid metal systems. The only attempts at validation of these models have used either low temperature liquid metals, such as mercury or WoodÆs Metal, or operating plant data. This paper reviews existing knowledge of the effects of system variables on total interfacial area in gas injection systems. Interfacial area is calculated from a range of published experimental aqueous and liquid metal systems and used to assess existing models. An operating region diagram was developed to assess dynamic similarity between experimental and industrial systems. It highlights areas where further research into both measurement techniques and experimental system variables is required in order to extend knowledge and guide further technical and design advances into the 21st century.

The Writer's knowledge of this region began in 1912, while he was with the Geological Survey of South Australia, and, investigated the principles governing the occurrence of fresh and saline ground waters in the area then being opened for closer settlement by the railways under construction from Port Lincoln.These field investigatons for water were extensive rather than intensive, but other examinations covered certain mineral aspects. The Writer also has' had the benefit in the preparation of this paper, of later work done by others, as well as of the monumental earlier work in South Australia by the late H. Y. L. Brown.AREAThe area dealt with, approximately 21,000 square miles, lies to the south of the latitude of Port Augusta.TOPOGRAPHYAs a whole the region is one of low relief, but the Olinthus Range, west of Cowell and north of Cleve, reaches an elevation of 2,000ft., while there is als0 a high area west of Port Lincoln and Tumby Bay. At the north end of the region the Gawler Ranges are formed by the dissection of a thick sheet of felspar porphyry extending over two degrees of longitude, by a width of 20 to 70 miles, with fairly uniform maximum elevations of the undissected portions of the order of 1,000 ft. above sea level. The reality is that in today's world almost half of nearly six billion people on the planet do not have access to commercial energy and the services it brings. Based on UN projections, in 30 years time there are likely to be nearly three billion more people in the world, over 90 per cent of them in countries which are already economically poor. The World Energy Council (WEC), through its 102 member countries, monitors trends and developments and projects future trends. WEC is a non-governmental international body representing all forms of energy and is committed to the sustainable use of energy for all mankind. This paper is based on WEC studies and papers presented at its many conferences and congresses worldwide. Primary energy demand growth is dominated by the developing countries over the next 30 years. The world energy mix is projected to change very little over the next 30 years. Fossil fuel supplies (ie coal, oil and gas) are likely to decline from 77 per cent to 73 per cent, nuclear energy may grow from five per cent to six per cent and renewable energy sources (eg hydro, solar, geothermal, wind, tidal and biomass) could increase from 18 per cent to 21 per cent. World energy consumption is expected to grow by over 50 per cent over the next 30 years. The paper reviews changes in energy demand in the world, particularly in the Asia/Pacific region. Environmental issues are covered, as are developments such as solar energy from space and the status of renewable energy forms. Agendas for action to achieve change are also reviewed.

Prior to 1980 the thought of the occurrence of high-level epithermal gold mineralisation occurring in eastern Queensland would have been more of a dream than a reality. In a world-wide sense the understanding of the processes and tectonic settings for epithermal gold were only beginning to be developed. Although epithermal gold deposits had been mined in the past in Queensland the significance of these deposits in a regional sense had not been appreciated. A number of companies had made cursory examinations of epithermal regions in the Mt Coolon and Cracow regions. Since the mid 1980's the search for epithermal gold mineralization in Queensland was truly on and over 30 tonnes of gold from this style of deposit has been discovered.

There are significant Mineral Resource and Reserve reporting challenges facing a mining company operating in the global arena. This paper specifically examines the Mineral Resource and Reserve reporting challenge facing BHP Billiton. The changing regulatory environment creates a significant challenge for global mining companies when reporting Mineral Resources and Reserves. The development and implementation of internal policies and standards for collecting and collating resource and reserve information is required for corporate governance, however the challenge is then to report this information publicly in such a way as to comply with the various codes and requirements in the many jurisdictions in which the company is required to report. The move to an International Code is not only desirable but is an essential requirement in todayÆs global market. The agreement to report using a single code internationally is however only the first step. A truly practical international reporting system must have common definitions and guidelines for interpretation as well as an international approach to the definition of a Competent Person, and even more importantly a common acceptance of that code by the relevant investment regulatory bodies. Without the universal acceptance of the concept of an international reporting code by the major regulatory bodies, implementation of such a code will be limited. With the major global mining companies seeking to raise capital in the USA, the worldÆs largest capital market, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and its approach to reserve reporting is becoming increasingly important. The development and implementation of an International Code must gain the support and acceptance of the SEC if it is to be successful.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the technical feasibility of application of the electric monorail as a haulage system in hard-rock underground mining in Australia, in comparison to conventional truck haulage systems. The elements of the system being investigated include mine design and layout, installation, loading and unloading subsystems, tramming speeds, cost and productivity, automation, ground support, safety and environmental factors. Electric monorail systems are potentially more cost-effective due to a range of factors: only the one system may be needed for the transportation of workers, material and rock; and excavations for monorail haulage can be smaller and mined at much steeper gradients than for truck haulage. The smaller excavation size also reduces the need for costly ground support and û in another important measure for the health and safety of mine workers, and for energy savings û it reduces ventilation requirements. Electric monorail haulage technology is being applied in hard rock mines in South Africa and considerable benefits have been realised by the industry in that country. In Australia, mine designs for metal mines generally remain based on truck haulage and/or shaft hoisting systems. There is a tendency to apply these haulage systems to every orebody. For the industry to achieve sustained growth against a backdrop of volatile diesel prices and environmental concerns, new generation underground haulage systems are required. The monorail haulage system offers opportunities in improving materials handling efficiencies in underground mining operations. This paper examines the application of monorail haulage in metalliferous underground mining, presents comparative data with track and trackless haulage systems and develops concepts for system application in combination with conveyor belt haulage and narrow vein mining situations.

This paper deals with two separate case studies investigating the froth phase performance and characterisation of two industrial rougher/ scavenger flotation circuits. Froth phase performance was quantified using a mass balance approach to estimate froth zone recovery. Measured characteristics of the froth phase included frother solution concentration determined by gas chromatography, and the time taken for an equilibrium froth sample to decay to one-half of its original froth height. The latter measurement is referred to as the æfroth half-lifeÆ and is strongly linked to froth stability. Special methods and techniques developed to preserve frother in solution and to measure froth half-life are briefly described. The frother type in the first case study was a mixture of straight and branched alcohols, whilst the frother type in the second case study was a mixture of alcohols, aldehydes and triethoxybutane. The first case study focussed on a flotation circuit treating a low-grade ore containing only a small fraction of floatable copper sulfide minerals, while the second case study focussed on a flotation circuit treating a higher grade complex sulfide ore containing significant quantities of chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite and pyrite. It was found that froth zone recovery of valuable mineral generally decreased down-the-bank of the two industrial rougher/scavenger circuits. Moreover, decreases in froth zone recovery significantly limit the overall cell recovery of valuable mineral achievable from the plant scavenger cells. However, the decrease in froth zone recovery could not be linked to the removal of frother from the pulp solution to the concentrate product in the preceding rougher flotation stages. Measurements of residual frother in solution suggested that, approximately, only five to ten per cent of the added frother was removed into the rougher/scavenger concentrate, with the remainder appearing in the scavenger tailings. This finding suggested there was apparently adequate frother in solution in the scavenger stages.

This paper presents a review of heat illness in mining, including reference to several recent investigations by the author. Heat illness is a collective term, covering the conditions of heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps and miliaria rubra. Heat stroke is life-threatening and is by far the most serious condition. It is rare in mining, if appropriate control measures are instituted. Heat exhaustion is primarily due to hypohydration, following prolonged sweating in hot conditions. Symptoms include fatigue, headaches, dizziness, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, or brief syncope. Confusion, ataxia, prolonged unconsciousness or convulsions are strongly suggestive of heat stroke. Heat cramps are painful involuntary contractions of skeletal muscle associated with work in hot conditions. The limbs are usually involved and the spasms typically last a few minutes, during which the affected part of the body is incapacitated. Heat cramps tend to occur in heat exhaustion, when hypohydration becomes marked. Miliaria rubra is a skin rash caused by extravasation of sweat into the skin, as a result of obstruction of the sweat glands. It occurs after prolonged and profuse sweating in hot environments. It can take three to four weeks of sedentary duties, in an air-conditioned surface environment, for the condition to resolve. Heat illness would be unlikely in underground mining, if the thermal environment was sufficiently well controlled by ventilation and refrigeration. This is however, often not practicable. Where engineering controls alone cannot provide sufficient control of risk, the residual risk can be assessed using an appropriate heat stress index. While procedural controls may further reduce the residual risk, it is important to remember that these are less reliable than engineering controls and cases of heat illness may still occur. Procedural controls include the application of heat stress limits, education, hydration, self-pacing, early symptom reporting, medical advice, acclimatisation procedures, air conditioned accommodation, support to achieve a healthy body mass index, and an effective emergency response capacity.

Poor quality water resulting from interaction of surface run-off with saline mine spoil and soils can cause significant problems for water reuse on mine sites. Not only can this saline water lead to machine corrosion and increased maintenance costs, but may cause detrimental effects on the environment. Determining the geochemistry of mine spoil, and the likelihood of salt dissolution during rainfall events, may aid in more effective mine site management of water. Spoil samples were taken from three areas of the German Creek mine site, situated in the Bowen Basin coalfield, Queensland. Samples from two undisturbed areas on the lease were also collected for comparison. Analyses were performed using a variety of laboratory techniques: leaching tests, effective cation exchange capacity determination, X-ray diffraction, clay quantification, and total organic content determination. Results show that dissolution of surface (top 2 cm) salt minerals from spoil areas is an important contributor to surface run-off salinity during rainfall events. Equally, ion exchange with clay minerals appears to be a significant source of elevated ion concentrations in run-off waters. Findings from the undisturbed areas show undetectable quantities of salt mineral species, resulting in waters with low ion concentrations. More generally, monovalent cations (sodium, and to a lesser extent potassium) appear to be derived from dissolution of salt precipitated whereas divalent cations (calcium, magnesium) are more likely to be sourced from exchange reactions with clay minerals. Incorporating knowledge about the mechanism of cation mobilisation from spoil with the spatial distribution of spoil properties and understanding of the dynamics of water quality variations on the site will aid in development of integrated water quantity and quality management strategies.

IT is intended herein: to make some brief comments on geophysical 'work in general and on the various methods, and then to refer to that branch which, perhaps, is of the greatest importance and interest to the metalliferous mining engineer, i.e., the variousmethods of electrical prospecting.The term geophysics was originally applied to those larger physical and geodetic studies and methods concerned with such purely scientific subjects as the investigation of the true figure of the earth and the determination of the stability relations resultingtherefrom. Applied geophysics and geophysical methods of prospecting are concerned primarily with the search for, and investigation of, useful mineral deposits concealed within the earth's crust and not readily detectable by the normal methods employed bythe mining geologist and prospector. The methods employed have been devised as a result of co-operation between mining men, geologists, and physicists, and, although steady progress has been made during the past 20 years or so, it is within the last four orfive years that the importance of these methods has been acknowledged by the mining world in general. Although many of these methods are still in, or have barely emerged from, the experimental stages, a steadily increasing list of important discoveries is attributable to their employment-more particularly in Europe and America than elsewhere. The various methods have each their own limitations regarding the class of work they can undertake, and no one method is capable of general application. In presenting size analysis data, one has the choice of various graphical techniques; each no doubt has been developed to highlight a particular aspect of the data. A frequency size distribution plot is used quite extensively to illustrate the importance of the finer size particles in iron ore granulation. However, the basis for such a plot is often not appreciated. As a result, cases of incorrect use can be cited. The aim of this paper is to extend the work of Alien (1981) and to provide, using examples and figures, a basic understanding of the implications of the various size distributions. A simplified method of presenting sizing data on a linear scale graph paper is presented and recommended. This involves a simple construction of a histogram of mass fraction versus particle size (in geometric progression).

At the beginning of this year it was my pleasure and responsibility to take over the Presidency of our Institute from Mr A. A. Parish who, as did his predecessors, filled the office with distinction. It is a great privilege to address you as President and it is an occasion for my wife and family, and I am most grateful for your inviting them to the buffet dinner. In the retreatment of an old tailing dump containing five per cent of lead principally as lead sulphate, the lead sulphate was floated with liquid Aerofloat reagent after sulphidising with phosphorous pentasulphide in an acid circuit. A zinc middling product was removed by flotation before recovering the lead. Concentrate products were sundried in surface dams.INTRODUCTIONDuring the period between 1917 and 1928 the Junction North Broken Hill Mine N.L. deposited several tailing dumps on its leases, which were acquired by North Broken Hill Ltd.in 1931. One of these dumps lay alongside a main road close to a residential area. The high metal prices prevailing in the post-war years (1945 onwards) provided a strong incentive for retreating this dump and transferring it to a less objectionable site.SAMPLING AND TESTINGIn 1946 a sampling and testing campaign was instituted which culminated in 1949 in a decision being made to erect a tailing retreatment plant adjacent to the dump.The dump was sampled with a 3 in. post hole auger using extension lengths of -! in. pipe for drilling to 30 ft. The dump material was fine and moist and core recovery was excellent. Hole depths ranged from 14 ft. to 30 ft., with an average dump depth of 20 ft.Individual samples were prepared from successive 9 ft.lengths of core and each sample thus obtained was, submitted for sizing and assay.The sampling showed that the dump contained approximately 380,000 tons of fine tailing assaying:

Timestudy analysis of mining operations at North Broken Hill Limited has been carried out by dissecting operations into small elemental components, and accurately timing these elements. Over a wide range of observations, this has enabled standard time values to be calculated for all underground work.The application of the standard values is in calculating performances as a measure of work output and Performance Controls are kept on approximately two-thirds of underground employees. Through the Controls it has been possible to stimulate supervisory action to improve low performance, and to reduce delays and lost time.The values are used to calculate contract" prices, and anomalies in previous prices have been adjusted on work values and not on arbitrary standards. In out-of-the-ordinary circumstances, the request for a timestudy investigation has been made by both operatives and foremen, and the contract set following the timestudy analysis has been to the satisfaction of both parties.The range of values enables contracts to be applied to work which was previously performed on a day basis, resulting in improved performance.A natural corollary of timestudy is the analysis of methods, and in some cases method improvements have been introduced.It is anticipated that further investigations will be made on methods.INTRODUCTIONIn 1953, a Timestudy analysis of mining operations at North Broken Hill Limited was commenced under the guidance of management consultants. Its aim was, to determine standard time values for specific operations, which would provide management with a measure of productivity beyond the existing measures of tons or feet of advance, and also to determine whether increased output was available under existing operating conditions.

As part of an overall strategy to make significant new technological advances for the sustainability of the mineral processing and related process industries CSIRO Minerals has developed a new dry separation device. It represents a technology breakthrough and has the potential to radically change the way in which dry particle size classification is achieved in the minerals industry. Conventional dry separation techniques have limited applications and often suffer from low productivity, high operating costs, low separation efficiency, the need for dust control and a lack of flexibility. In the absence of efficient dry techniques, wet processing is often used. The use of wet processing either requires the introduction of water into a separation process, which causes environmental concerns through the need for water supply and tailings dams or the use of æunfriendlyÆ chemicals for dense media separations that have considerable impact on handling and disposal. Wet processing also increases operating costs due to plant instability, materials handling, thickening, filtration and product drying. The new CSIRO technology exploits a combination of natural and applied forces to achieve specific particle motions that produce size separation. In doing so, many of the traditional shortcomings of dry separation have been overcome. The CSIRO Dry Particle Size Separator is ideally suited for dry size separation applications within the size range 1 mm to 30 ¦mfor moderate moisture levels (2 per cent), have low unit throughput, produce a fixed cut size and are therefore impractical where very high unit capacity and low operating costs are required. This paper presents a review of dry separation devices together with details of the new Dry Particle Size Separator and typical results for a number of materials, including iron ore and quarry dust.
