The Koongarra uranium deposit was discovered in August 1970 by Noranda Australia Limited. Denison Mines Limited acquired the rights of ownership in October 1980 and has continued the 'struggle' to bring the proposed mine, containing approximately 13 300 tonnes of U308 of Indicated ore and having a value of $1 billion (1984 dollars), into operation. During the 14 years that have passed, the owners have found it necessary to deal with numerous Federal, State and Territory government departments, aboriginal representatives, handle thousands of communications, attend and convene countless meetings and spend millions of dollars. The influence of pulp density, ferric ion concentration and particle size on the tank bioleaching of two kinds of refractory gold concentrates are discussed. The chemistry and mechanism of the bioleaching process are also presented. The relationship between oxidation of sulphides, liberation of enclosed gold and gold cyanidation are discussed. The consumption of NaCN could be reduced by alkaline treatment of bioleached residues prior to Cyanidation.

Currently the mining and mineral processing industries use some 32% of the annual primary energy consumption in Australia. This share, although large even now, will increase with the realisation of the 1980's production expansions to 40% by 1985. Two metal industries dominate the energy scenario; iron and steel and aluminium. Major expansions in the local industry will be dominated by the aluminium industry. New Zealand Steel Limited is nearing completion of the environmental reporting and planning procedures for its proposed fivefold expansion to steelmaking at Glenbrook, and supporting mining operations at Waikato North Head. A report on the proposal to transport concentrate from the mining operations to Glenbrook has also been prepared and is awaiting release. This paper draws from these events, and by discussing some of the problems encountered, gives some guidelines for the preparation of an Environmental Impact Report.

The use of monitors to assess equipment performance is carried out on a routine basis in many industries. The benefits gained through process control in knowing exactly how the equipment is working far outweigh the initial capital costs of the monitor. In the mining industry several dragline monitors have been developed and installed on equipment through out the world, but to date none has been fully accepted by the industry. This paper describes the use of a sophisticated monitoring system which incorporates an onboard processor to assess both dragline and blast performance. The results of a case study are presented and an indication of the potential of the monitoring system to optimise mine production is given.

The Sirosmelt top submerged lancing system has many applications in the smelting of base metal and complex materials. It has particular advantages for smaller scale smelting and the treatment of recycle materials in smelters where its low capital and operating costs and its operational flexibility are of immediate benefit. The system can be fueled by oil, gas or coal, as well as by mixtures of fuels. For many applications, the use of coal as a fuel has operating cost advantages over oil and gas, but conventional pulverised coal feeding systems entail very large capital expenditure and this militates against the use of coal. The methods available for improving on conventional technology for coal firing of Sirosmelt systems are discussed and operating experience with alternative systems are outlined. The use of coal as a reductant in the Sirosmelt system is also discussed.

Nuclear power stations to be installed in Australia will be fuelled from Australian resources of raw materials. This will require the establishment of new manufacturing industries and the eventual expansion of established activities, especially in uranium mining and the preparation of precision metal products. This paper presents some predictions of the possible growth of nuclear power installations in Australia. These might amount to 4000 MWE by 1985 and 11,500 MWE by 1990 and towards the end of the century, about 50% of new generating plant might be nuclear. Predictions are given of the demands for materials (uranium and zirconium) and fuel manufacturing services for four reactor systems which might be considered in the programme. - The availability of raw materials and technical capability place Australia in a particularly good position to undertake the manufacture of nuclear fuel'; in addition to satisfying the domestic demand we should actively seek export markets for these products.

The heavy sulfide zone (HSZ) of the Grasberg deposit has the geometry of a funnel and is located at the contact of the mineralised intrusive and the relatively barren sedimentary rock types. The geometry and the rock properties associated with the HSZ plays a significant role in pushback design and sequencing. Most of the HSZ has relatively low strengths which must be considered in slope design and management. This paper presents the open pit mine geotechnical and planning design considerations associated with the HSZ.

Borehole breakout is a drilling induced phenomenon caused by overstress of rock around the borehole. Its depth usually aligns with the minimum horizontal principal stress direction. For this reason, it has been used to determine stress orientations and a series of researchers also argued its dimensions can be indicative of stress magnitudes. If the stress dependencies of breakout geometries are well understood, it is possible to estimate stress magnitudes based on these data. This paper investigates the influences of critical parameters on breakout dimensions, including absolute stress magnitudes, stress ratios and borehole diameter. Several experiments have been conducted on cubic (120 x 120 x 120 mm3) sandstone samples with pre-drilled holes (22 mm and 30 mm) under true tri-axial loading conditions using UNSW self-designed equipment. Experimental results confirm the increasing maximum horizontal principal stress magnitudes result in larger angular span and longer breakout depth at constant minimum horizontal and vertical principal stresses. There is also a considerable discrepancy observed between experimental results and the analytical model. The optimisation of capital in the total planning context has broadly two components: ò maximising the efficient utilisation of capital against competing capital demands; and ò maximising the efficiency with which the industry's capital requirements are sourced. This paper focuses on the latter of these two concepts, as I wish to highlight that within the coal industry the inefficient sourcing of capital has resulted in the inefficient utilisation of capital. In discussing the optimisation of capital within the coal industry I would like to outline three fundamental issues which currently impact the industry and its application of capital: Initially, from the perspective of an independent investor, the perceived risk associated with investing in a volatile industry cycle has not permitted appropriate funding structures to be created thus leading to an inefficient utilisation of capital. Secondly, investors seeking out a windfall gain have established a practice of trading in the assets rather than encouraging recapitalisation. And lastly the mismatch of supply and demand leading to the establishment of new projects which include a percentage of offshore investment has fostered an environment of lower returns and subsequently a dilution of capital.

Mine gas control is a major issue in most of the gassy underground coal mines, due to its direct impact on safety, production delays and cost of production. Analysis of the gas data, from different collieries in Australia showed that longwall gas emissions have increased substantially over the years. Simply increasing the number of goaf holes in the panel or decreasing goaf hole spacing seems not to be effective, in controlling high goaf gas emissions. A major research project has been undertaken by CSIRO in collaboration with mine sites to address this goaf gas control issue with the aim of developing effective and optimum goaf gas drainage strategies. The project has combined extensive field studies with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, to characterise goaf gas flow patterns and develop effective gas control strategies. The research work specifically involved review of gas control issues at field sites, goaf gas monitoring, tracer gas tests, CFD simulations and extensive field trials. Field demonstration studies of the new optimum strategies have been conducted at two collieries in Australia. The project results have shown that the optimum strategies were highly successful, in improving the overall efficiency of goaf gas drainage systems, at both the field sites. Results of the goaf gas flow characterisation studies and field demonstration studies are summarised in this paper.

It is desired to present in a condensed form the present state of our knowledge in regard to the distribution of the ore, coal, and oil-shale deposits of Tasmania in time and space.Tasmania is exceptionally well endowed with mineral wealth, particularly in the north-western and western districts. In the enthusiasm resulting from the first discoveries of mineral deposits at a great number of localities in those districts, it became a generally accepted belief that the whole of that portion of Tasmania constituted a continuous metalliferous province. As geological research in these, areas has progressed, however, it has become increasingly clear that ore-deposition has been confined on an economic scale to definite well-defined areas or belts which have a genetic relationship to certain tectonic and petrologic phases of the general geology. Iron from the blast furnace constitutes the starting point in steel production and any increase that can be made in iron production will bring about important repercussions in a long line of processes. Coke constitutes a major item in furnace operation and consumption at the Port Kembla Works of Australian Iron & Steel Ltd. has been approximately 1,850 lb. per ton of iron produced on ore practice, or 3,000 tons per day.For many years coke quality has been subject to much criticism by furnace operators throughout the world, sometimes with little real grounds. Whatever the merits of previous arguments, and they were no doubt two-sided, the development of bigger furnaces has focused attention on coke strength. At the same time a decrease in the quantity of good quality coking coals available to many plants has stimulated research in this field.Extensive coke research has been carried out overseas, and in Australia the.B.H.P. Organization is now actively doing likewise in its Central Research Laboratories at Shortland near Newcastle, N.S.W., and works research groups at Newcastle and Port Kembla Steelworks. Similar work has been initiated in the beehive coking industry. Such work is in its infancy and this paper will outline the direction of the activities at Port Kembla rather than propound specific solutions.At Port Kembla good quality coking coals are readily available from the IIIawarra coalfield. The seams generally mined for coking are Bulli and Wongawilli and to a much smaller extent Tongarra. Characteristics of these coals appear in Table 1.

The use of rubber-tyred equipment in a decline mining system requires that roadways be kept free of running water. At Renison this is achieved by the use of stage pumping or gravitating to a major pump station and pumping from there directly to the surface. The frequent use of pick-up lines and pump boxes in the decline system provides a method of water control and reduces the amount of slimes in pump lines. The Bassett Fault structure, which lies on the hangingwall of the mine is the major source of ground water. This is encountered in diamond drill holes and exploration develop- ment. Dewatering of this structure is possible by controlling the flow from selected holes. Future pumping requirements may be predicted by analysing changes in the level of the water table and by calculating dewatering rates required to maintain ore reserves available for production.

A reappraisal of the stratigraphy, new regional kinematic analysis and thermobarometric data allow a new interpretation of the metamorphic zoning and tectonic structure of the Upper Eocene high-pressure metamorphic core complex of northernNew Caledonia allow a three steps evolution to be proposed: 1. subduction and understacking of previously thinned continental crust elements; 2. subduction blocking due to the crustal thickening; and 3. crustal thinning and extensional detachment during the diapir-like uplift and unroofing of the eclogitic core. Research and development into alternate gold and precious metals adsorbents has resulted in the development of a new technology named the AUROSAVE adsorption process (ARGOSAVE'" for high silver con- tent ores). Adsorbents called VITROKELE'" can be tailored for either Gold I (cyanide leach) or Gold III (halide leach) applications. VITROKELE consists of a chemically synthetic adsorbent carried on an inert substrate, often a polystyrene bead. It is suitable for both in- pulp and in-solution use. VITROKELE adsorbent offers certain advan- tages over both carbon and ion exchange resin adsorbents. This paper describes testwork on Australian ores and commercial solu- tions obtained from operating Australian plants demonstrating the kinetic loading characteristics, elution methods and other operating parameters of VITROKELE adsorbent in the cyanide system. Brief reference is made to VITROKELE in the Gold III system.

Pilot plant work has played a major role in the process development and design phase of the Iscor Heavy Minerals project. The pilot plant campaigns have been aimed at three process areas, namely primary beneficiation (wet gravity circuits), heavy mineral separation and ilmenite smelting. A process development structure was put in place, and the various pilot plants designed and built. A number of pilot campaigns were conducted during the project phase since 1995, and most of the key objectives were achieved. Various other valuable ælessonsÆ were learnt, and were incorporated in the full-scale plant designs, or used to change operating philosophies, equipment choices et cetera. The cost and durations of the pilot runs were significant, and an analysis indicated that the major risk and technology area of smelting has contributed more than 70 per cent of the total cost.

This paper presents an economic study comparing two gold recovery processes, zinc precipitation (Merrill-Crowe) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). Capital, operating, and gold losses costs from an actual CIP plant study are compared to costs developed from a hypothetical Merrill-Crowe process flowsheet. ' Results indicate an overall economic advantage to CIP over Merrill-Crowe for plants processing slurries within the range of the five gold solution grades selected for this study.

The Lihir gold operation, located in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG), approximately 900 km north of Port Moresby, was commissioned in 1997 under the management of the Lihir Management Company, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto. This management period ended in 2005 with Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) becoming self-managed. LGL is now the largest listed company in PNG and a top tier mining company in Australia. The focus of the operation since 2005 has been to take advantage of strong market conditions to increase cash flow while driving operating costs into the lowest quartile of gold producers. During this period production has increased through capital expansions, most notably with the addition of a flotation circuit, and through culture change and efficiency improvements. The next step forward for the Lihir operation is a major plant upgrade to increase production to an average of around one million ounces per annum by matching the ore processing rate to the ore mining rate. The key benefits of this project will be the addition of approximately 240 000 ounces per annum of gold production, the access to an additional one million ounces of gold and the ability to meet all stockpiling requirements. The Lihir operation has come out of the boom period in a strong position, is undertaking a major upgrade at a time when prices are low and labour is available, and will be positioned to take advantage of future opportunities as they arise.

Management requires up-to-date information on the activities of an enterprise in order to maintain control and to assist in decision-making and planning. In today's environment it is essential that this information is immediately available and in an easily assimilated format. If this is not the case, management is forced to make decisions based on intuition and past experience. At Mt Newman Mining Co, a computer application has been developed and implemented with the objective of providing this type of information to management. The Key Parameter Reporting System (as the application is known) allows for daily (constant) on-line capture of selected production statistics, safety statistics and free format textual comments relating to topics such as industrial relations, major maintenance and other pertinent news. Information can be retrieved,'and displayed or printed in either a tabular or graphical format. All senior managers have colour visual display units in their offices for immediate access to the system. Access to selected sensitive information is controlled. All company staff are able to retrieve unsecured information from the system via visual display units installed in all company Locations.
