GEMNet, (Grade Estimation using Mapping Networks), is a grade/reserve estimation software system that uses the artificial intelligence technique known as neural networks to perform reserve estimates from both two- and three-dimensional data samples from a mineral deposit. The system is the result of research carried out over the past three years into the feasibility of using neural networks for reserve estimation at the AIMS Research Unit in the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering at the University of Nottingham. This paper describes the architecture of the GEMNet system including details of the neural network components of the system. The performance of the GEMNet system is then compared to several other widely used reserve estimation techniques on two reserve estimation examples. The results produced by the GEMNet system compare favourably with more conventional estimation techniques, but require fewer assumptions to be made about the form of the data used, and do not require the use of complex mathematical modelling.

A mathematical model for gas flow dynamics and heat and mass transfer processes occuring in the tuyere raceways and in the zone of the final for- mation and heating of pig iron and slag has been developed and simulated on a digital computer. It takes into account the formation and size of the raceway zones, combustion of coke and its substit- utes, oxidation of the metal, radiation from the gases to the raceway boundaries, physical heat losses and the direct reduction of the pig iron elements below the raceway zones. To evaluate the distribution of heat produced by the oxidation of metal between gases and prod- ucts of smelting, the problem of heating the mat- erials in the raceways with the sources of heat in the materials under conditions of intensive gas circulation in the raceways is solved. To determine the amount of heat transferred by radiation from the gas to the boundaries of the raceways, the problem of radiant heat transfer be- tween two grey bodies forming a closed system is solved. Using the structural parameters of the furn- ace, the inlet parameters of the combination blast and exit parameters of the melt, the model permits the calculation of the temperatures of materials entering and leaving the raceways and also the res- idual temperature of the gases, which qualitatively differs from the theoretical combustion temperature. Analysis of the operation of several different blast furnaces has shown that the overall picture of the interaction between gas flow dynamics, mass and heat transfer processes occuring in the race- ways and in the zone of final product formation, obtained with the aid of the model, now permits us to approach from a different position the deter- mination of the limiting factors in furnace operat- ion. It also allows us to explain certain phenom- ena observed in blast furnace practice and to dis- cover new relationships which may be used in analy- sis and control of the smelting process.

Shortly after the outbreak of war in September, 1939, it became apparent that considerable quantities of certain metals and alloys which at that time were not being produced in Australia would be required in increasing amounts for the prosecution of the war effort.Australian industry had relied on overseas sources of supply for the relatively small quantities of many special metals which were needed under peacetime conditions. As the war progressed so great became the demand for mooy of these alloys in Great Britain and other allied countries that it was necessary for them to place an embargo on the export of these materials, and thus it soon became evident that if Australia's production of munitions was to expand and develop it would be necessary for her to become independent of overseas sources for many of these essential 'items. The shipping position also became very acute, and this, accentuated the difficulties of obtaining these alloys. Because of the conditions outlined aqove, the manufacture of over thirty different metals and alloys .was undertaken at Newcastle during the past decade. It is with two of these that this paper proposes to deal. They are tungsten powder and ferro-silicon.TUNGSTEN POWDERTungsten is a rare and comparatively new metal. It is used extensively in the production of high speed tool steel, some grades of which contain up to 22% tungsten. Such articles as twist drills, reamers, milling cutters, and lathe tools are made from tool steel, and the demand for these during the war years was greater than ever before. The use of tungsten in the manufacture of high speed steel was first developed in 1914 by the Germans, and when it was discovered that they were using tungsten bearing steel for the production of munitions there began a world-wide search for ores of this rare metal.

During the past five years there has been a transformation in the operating costs which apply to narrow vein mining. Mechanised methods including sublevel uphole retreat and narrow vein cut and fill are now proven. Other methods, such as vein mining by horizontal drilling from a raise platform are currently being tried in Australia.The important factors which affect the cost and appropriateness of each method include: ore continuity, the planarity of the wall contacts, relative hardness of ore and wall rocks and the dip bf the deposit.Drawing on current operating costs from a number of mines and on recent feasibility studies, a methodology for estimating the costs of narrow vein mining is presented. These costs are then placed in their economic context with regard to ore grade and mining rate.

Arising out of the increasing demands for efficiency in modern ore-dressing operations has grown a requirement for fuller knowledge of the characteristics of the ore treated. In part, this is being met by improved methods of study of the mode of occurrence of the constituent minerals, and of the intricacies of their physical relationships.A typical instance of the need for such a study is the presence of some undesired mineral in a flotation concentrate or tailing, which may be due either to mechanical association through insufficient grinding, or to incomplete separation in the flotation operation.Again, with modern practice in fine grinding, which often requires that from 70% upwards of the ground ore shall pass a 200-mesh screen, it is obviously impossible to obtain data on comparative grinding efficiencies, for instance, unless there is adequate knowledge of the size-composition of the material passing the finest available screen.Studies like these can be made satisfactorily only after size-separation (which may be carried out conveniently by elutriation) and by actual visual examination with the aid of a microscope, and the minute size of the mineral grains to be examined has necessitated the development of a new technique of sizing and microscopic examination.

This paper describes the design, construction and performance of sill pillars using cemented development mullock at the Crusader Gold Mine. The orebody is some 35 m - 60 m in length, 5 m - 8 m wide, dipping at 60¦ - 85¦ and plunging at about 40¦ to the north. It is accessed via a footwall decline. The ore occurs at the contact between basalt and ultramafic. This contact is characterised by shearing and alteration; and is prone to unraveling failure. The cut and fill mining method at Crusader extracts 25 m high ore blocks in four flat back lifts and one 8 m thick crown pillar. To enable full recovery of these high-grade crown pillars with minimal dilution, a 5 m thick sill pillar is constructed using cemented rock fill (CRF), after mining of the bottom two lifts in each block. Uncemented development mullock is used as rock fill (RF) for subsequent lifts. Development mullock and cement/water slurry is mixed underground to produce CRF. The fill is transported to the stope in LHDs and dumped on the floor. The sill pillar is advanced progressively, with compaction provided by the loader driving over the previously placed fill. Old jumbo rods are installed as shear pins along the flat dipping hangingwall to reduce the risk of rotational failure of the pillar. A fan of cable bolts is installed into the hangingwall to prevent unraveling failure in the sheared ground. Buffer blasting is used to minimise damage to the CRF sill pillar when the crown pillar below is extracted. At the time of writing, extraction of the crown pillar underneath the CRF has taken place at the 930 stope. The crown pillar was extracted successfully with dilution from the backfill and hangingwall minimised and 98 per cent of the gold recovered. This compares with pillars that were mined beneath uncemented backfill where only 70 per cent of the gold was recovered and where there was significant dilution from the backfill and from hangingwall failures. Where no CRF was placed, there were also numerous production delays caused by large rocks from the hangingwall blocking the stope brow.

Base metal sulfides at the Currawong volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposit in the Lachlan fold belt of Victoria, south-east Australia, were formed in the late Silurian, but D2 deformation of the deposit in the Devonian Bindian orogeny was responsible for structural repetition that created the resource. The primary sulfide lenses were stacked by reverse-sense shear zones within a volcano-sedimentary sequence dominated by dacitic intrusions and turbidites. Shear zones were localised along lithological contacts, including the margins of the sulfide lenses. The competent dacitic intrusions did not fold during D2; folding was restricted to the packages of metasedimentary rocks. Overturning occurs within, but not between, the metasedimentary packages. The overall geometry of the deposit is that of a duplex, but the detailed shape does not conform to idealised duplex types, probably because of post-D2 deformation. A significant complicating factor for understanding the deposit, and for resource evaluation, is the dramatic variation in deposit geometry along strike, which may also be due to post-D2 deformation. The present day configuration of the deposit results from constructive thrust repetition of what may have been a single ore lens and destructive along-strike disruption controlled by rheology.CITATION:Blenkinsop, T G, Macklin, D and Hammond, R, 2015. Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) fines from Western Australia is a hematite and limonite mix characterised by high crystal water content. Due to its higher supply capacity and lower prices, the Wuhan Iron and Steel Corporation (Group) intended to use more FMG fines in the sinter mix. It is understood that sinter quality is closely related to its microstructure featured by the hardness and brittleness of different mineral phases, the content of micro pores, and trans-cracks. In order to maintain sinter qualities such as tumble index, reducibility and so on at higher FMG fines blend ratios, a research project was initiated to study the effects of the FMG fines blending ratio on sinter microstructure. Research results showed that at higher FMG fines ratios, the hardness of hematite and magnetite were both decreased while the hardness of calcium ferrite showed a tendency to decrease. The number of cracks that were generated during Vickers hardness measurement in various mineral phases decreased, but their length was shortened, and the variation of crack lengths increased. The contents of hematite and magnetite were also reduced and the reduction of magnetite was clearer. Also the content of calcium ferrite and pores rose and the magnitude of the increase of pores was greater. Among all the mineral phases in sinter cakes, the Vickers hardness of hematite was highest within the range of 879 N/mm2 ~ 942 N/mm2, and therefore the decrease of its content in sinter and the enhancement of its brittleness, ie the number of cracks increased, were harmful to sinter strength. Ventilation challenges are often encountered when an underground mine expands to new zones and it often is the case to make a thorough review of the existing system and assess immediate and future airflow needs at the desired quantity and quality. An unexpected mine plan change that calls for increased development and production from new areas can impose a strain on the existing ventilation system. Budgetary constraints can also demand creativity in design on the mine ventilation engineerÆs part. Since the addition of several mining horizons it had become obvious at the Meikle mine that something had to be done to increase airflow quantity and quality in the old main zones because most of the ventilation resources had been channelled for development in the new mining horizons. An airflow assessment of the existing system had to be performed and it was determined that the airflow quantity had to be increased by at least 30 per cent and the quality of the air had to be improved by reducing nuisance and respirable dust and at the same time reducing the airflow temperature before it was used in a few mining zones. At the conclusion of the airflow assessment it was determined that a third centrifugal fan would be installed on a new 3.05 m diameter borehole from surface to underground. By a careful study of temperature conditions over time it was determined that an evaporative cooling spray chamber would be sufficient to cool the airflow down from the high dry bulb temperatures observed down to saturation at the wet bulb temperature. At the same time excessive nuisance dust generated as a result of the airflow travelling a long way in a haulage drift will be knocked down in the spray chamber resulting in cool, clean air in the mining districts. Expansion of the existing surface ammonia refrigeration plant was out of the question for several reasons. The fact that the airflow was hot and dry meant that evaporative cooling spray chambers could achieve lower working temperatures at a very low cost compared to the expansion of the chilled water plant. The expansion of the ventilation system at Meikle mine and the use of evaporative cooling spray chambers were demonstrated to be very successful and the information presented in this paper can be of benefit to other mines experiencing the same ventilation problems as was the case at the Meikle mine.

Optimisation and sensitivity analysis of final pit limits is now an accepted procedure for open pit planning studies. Tools to assist the design engineer in an underground metalliferous mine to make optimal choices for the selection of major development, stope geometry and cut-off grade analysis have not been available. The engineer has had to rely on experience and a limited analysis of design alternatives. A new tool called the `floating stope' has been developed to define the optimal (boundary) limit for material that can be economically extracted by underground stoping methods. The method is analogous to the `floating cone' method of open pit optimisation. The geology and mineralisation are modelled as a regular or subcell block model. Included in the model are structural and geotechnical features, and any previously mined out areas. Inputs to the procedure include the minimum stope dimensions, cut-off grade, stope head grade, and the way in which dilution is to be calculated. The optimisation procedure can be directed to maximise ore tonnes, grade, contained metal or the economic (dollar) value of material mined. The procedure can be applied at each stage of mine evaluation and design to assist with preliminary resource appraisal, selection of stoping methods, and detailed mine design. As with open pit optimisation procedures, manual intervention by an experienced engineer is required to produce practical and detailed designs. This practical design should follow the optimised design as closely as possible. The paper outlines the algorithms used in the definition of the stope envelope, and describes the analysis and results of several case studies where the optimisation procedure has been applied.

The 1100 Orebody is the main copper production area of Isa Mine with an output of 390 000 tonnes per four week period and a work force of approximately 260 men per shift. Currently a total of 56 nippers work a three shift, five day week roster to-service crews spread over a strike length of 1000 m and a vertical height of 220 in. A variety of rail and diesel equipment provides shaftto cribroom and cribroomto sublevel work place transport of men and materials. Overall eficiency and safety has been improved with a selected group performing supply, storage, clean-up and "bus runs" throughout the orebody - activities which are further co-ordinated by an FM radio system linking units with a control clerk.

The Golden Cross mine is a Joint Venture between Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited, as Manager, and Viking Mining Limited The mine is targeting Zero Lost Time Accidents as a goal. The Golden Cross operation produces gold and silver from both underground and open pit. The mine is based on an epithermal gold-silver deposit. Treatment of ore is on a campaign basis for each ore type (ie underground or open pit). Milling is conventional SAG Mill and Ball Mill grinding circuit followed by carbon in pulp recovery of gold and silver. All tailing materials are treated through the Cyanisorb process to reduce cyanide levels prior to being discharged into the tailings dam.

Because of the mineralogical complexity of nickeliferous laterites, most commercial and laboratory extractive processes require the ore to be blended to a feed of "constant" chemical composition. Even using the "constant" feed there are significant variations in processing behaviour within and between different feed lots. Chemical and mineralogical analyses of lumps of ore taken from the Yabulu stockpile of Queensland Nickel have highlighted the complex- ity of the ore making up the blended feed material. Each sample has been subjected to acid leaching and reduction/ammonia leaching tests and the results correlated with the mineralogical location of the nickel. The consequences of the variability in ease of leaching of the nickel are indicated.

Based upon the previous work of Norman and Loeb, a method, was used, to assess-the comparative wearing properties of ten different alloys being used, or being considered for use, as mill liners and grinding media at Mount Isa. The materials to be tested were obtained in the form of large diameter balls and were run, along with the regular ball charge, in a large ball mill operating-under normal grinding conditions. At selected. intervals, the test balls were removed from the mill, weighed and identified, and their relative wear rates determined.

Coal development in New South Wales can involve a complex series of government approvals, a requirement that results from the coincidence of many development sites with environmentally sensitive areas. The concept of network analysis is applied to the pre- development regulatory procedures leading up to the grant of a coal lease. The network facilitates a quantitative and qualitative analysis of activity schedules relating to pre- requisite statutory approvals. The sequencing of activities (with clear start and finish nodes, identification of sensitivities and time estimates for completion of each phase of the network) provides government and industry with an effective planning tool.

The Kellogg slag fuming model is extended to apply to the Port Pirie plant which uses recuperative heating of secondary air. Exten- sive investigations of plant operations pro- vide parameters for use with the model, and verification that the resulting model provides simulation which is very close to actual plant performance. The model is used to_deter- mine optimum slag fuming operating conditions, and the results of several other investigations with the model are briefly described.

As a part of the Newcrest, Telfer Expansion Project, a consortium of Australian, Canadian and South African Mining Contractors in joint venture have been contracted to develop the hoisting shaft. The parties namely; Byrnecut Mining Pty Ltd, Murray and Roberts RUC and Thyssen Mining Construction of Canada Ltd have combined their individual expertise to excavate the shaft. There is a particular emphasis on the use of proven shaft sinking techniques from North America and in particular integrating electric hydraulic drilling equipment and personnel from the Canadian Mining industry. The Telfer hoist shaft when completed will have a finished diameter of 7.1 metres and extend to a depth of 1170 metres below the collar. The shaft will be fully concrete lined and will later be equipped for hoisting ore from the Telfer deeps at a rate of five million tonnes per annum. The shaft when completed will be the largest shaft ever completed in Australia on a volumetric basis. This paper will examine the technical aspects of the shaft sink, as well as exploring the integration of personnel and equipment from the frozen prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada into an operation in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia. What are the spin-off benefits for the development of other shafts within Australia?
