Naturally occurring rutile contains approximately 96 per cent titanium dioxide (Ti02), whereas the product from the ilmenite reduction - aeration upgrading process, "sub- rutile", contains only about 92 per cent Ti02. Therefore, there is an-incentive to lift the quality of sub-rutile by removing transition metal impurities, in order to supply a more valuable and marketable product, particularly for the chloride-route pigment producers. Previous studies have shown that the sub- rutile residual iron content (of approximately 4 per cent) and residual manganese content (of approximately 1.5 per cent) are chemically bound within the titanium-oxygen mineral lattice, and are most difficult to remove by simple leaching methods. In attempts to improve their eventual removal, a simple process modification has been successfully investigated in laboratory scale trials. Transition metal sulphides have been formed in the reduced ilmenite by using a "sulphur-doping" technique during reduction (metallization) conducted at controlled temperatures. These compounds give rise to greatly enhanced dissolution of the unwanted transition metal constituents during the sub- sequent aeration and acid washing steps. Thus, the manganese content of the final sulphur- doped, reduced-aerated, acid washed product can be reduced by about 90 per cent to 0.2 per cent, and the iron content by about 70 per cent to less than 1.5 per cent, in comparison with those levels remaining after unmodified pro- cessing. Additions of sulphur as low as 2 per cent of the weight of the ilmenite have proven satisfactory. Preliminary studies reveal that the modified process is economically feasible. These results suggest that the sulphur content of the Collie coal char used in an unmodified reduction step must exert some influence on the eventual removal of iron and manganese during aeration and acid washing.

Uncertainty due to spatial and temporal variability of different pollutants found in soil, water and air is an important issue in the modelling of environmental impacts. Recognition of spatial environmental patterns is relatively straightforward to achieve by applying most of the well-known artificial neural networks or adopting a stochastic approach. However, it is the temporal component of the environmental variables that makes modelling of the environmental pollutants particularly complicated and challenging. This paper presents the results of a case study investigating the artificial neural network performance when modelling the spatio-temporal behaviour of environmental pollutants. The test case involved the modelling and prediction of the distribution of water quality indicators along a river from the point of discharge of treated mine effluents. The behaviour of river water quality indicators is rather complex and shows a lot of fluctuations due to a number of hydrochemical, hydrobiological and hydrodynamic factors. Results obtained in this study indicate that artificial neural networks provide a very powerful and robust method for simultaneous modelling of spatio-temporal behaviour of environmental pollutants.

Mount Isa Mines Limited has been mining copper ore for 50 years. In recent years, this production has been entirely by open stoping methods with cemented backfill, mostly in the large 1100 orebody.This has been the major ore source for 20 years, with smaller amounts coming from the 400, 500, 650 and 1900 orebodies. At present, the 1100 orebody is the only source, and this situation will continue until the deep 3000 and 3500 orebodies begin producing in late 1992/93. Production rates have increased to almost 6 Mt/yr, and are planned to rise to 7 Mt/yr by 1995/96. In the future, there will be a move towards variations of the open stoping system as production moves to more lensy zones of the southern 1100 orebody and to the deeper 3000 and 3500 orebodies. This paper describes current operations in the 1100 Orebody, with some indications of future directions.

It is important to understand skarn-porphyry transitions in order to use exposed skarns to look for associated and potentially larger porphyries. For such purposes, a good start is to understand the transition between porphyry and skarn in known deposits. In this contribution, we report the transition at Antamina, Peru, where skarns occur in and around a Miocene complex comprised of more than seven porphyritic intrusions. There are three types of skarn-porphyry relationships. The earliest intrusive phase, P1A, contains both endoskarn and porphyry-style quartz veins with secondary biotite halos. The porphyry quartz veins and endoskarns formed at the same time. Locally, the intrusion contains only endoskarn without porphyry quartz veins and is surrounded by exoskarns in carbonate wall rocks. In the third scenario, later porphyry (P2) intruding into P1A porphyry and skarns related to P1A contains abundant granular quartz veins and secondary biotite alteration but does not have significant endoskarn. The granular quartz veins also extend into earlier P1A skarns. The scarcity of endoskarn associated with P2 is related to the supply of Ca. The earliest P1A intrusion intruded into carbonates that supplied abundant Ca, therefore both endoskarns and exoskarns formed. In contrast, where the wall rocks of the later P2 intrusion are P1A or skarn related to P1A, there was little free Ca, therefore only porphyry-style quartz veins formed.CITATION:Chang, Z, Mrozek, S A, Meinert, L D and Windle, S, 2015. When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode amI across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. Geophysics is playing an increasingly important role in the exploration industry. In the soft rock scene the application of seismic techniques is basically mandatory prior to any drilling program. Simply, this is because, in a majority of situations, the seismic method is ideally suited to mapping accurately relatively flat lying strata and displaying structures that may host oil or gas. It is worth stressing that seismic methods do not delineate oil or gas but they map well in two or three dimensions. In the base metal arena, geophysical methods used are generally focussed on direct detection methods with the mapping application not often used except in potential fields (magnetics and gravity). The success rate in the last decade has not been good but this does not only apply to the application of geophysics; it really applies across the board of exploration techniques. Both geological and geochemical exploration have not had a success rate commensurate with the funds injected. Basically in the last ten years we have failed as explorers! As explorers we have been negligent in mapping. As geoscientists we have let the basic mapping and observation skills diminish û the old adage æboots on the groundÆ is still applicable but are we doing enough of it? The answer is clearly no. As explorers the huge burden of bureaucracy, eg Government Acts û local, state and federal, safety compliance, environmental compliance, etc has reduced the ægeologicalÆ time dramatically. This has culminated in an over-reliance on quick fix solutions, eg spot the bump geophysics or geochemistry. This obviously simplistic scenario is arguable but there is no doubt in the geoscientific areas we have failed in the last decade to provide adequate geoscientific maps to assist in exploration. This failure could partially be responsible for the current demise of the industry resulting in a reduction in exploration dollars and, hence, people. This trend is seen acutely in the geophysical area where the head count in comparison with the geological fraternity is low. Other trends during this downturn are inevitable as explorers maximise the use of the dollar in exploration and diminish spending on advances in geophysics. Improvements are being seen however in geophysical equipment, although it is considered that the main improvement will be in the interpretation of data. Specifically, the trend will be towards integrating geophysical data into geological, geochemical and spatial data sets producing quality interpretation and providing low risk drill targets. Examples of the current trends in hardware and future directions are discussed below. In interpretive schemes there are very few examples of integrated interpretation but the possible trends will be discussed with limited examples.

Unplanned dilution has the potential to seriously undermine the economic viability of a mine, and in some cases results in mine closure. The effect of stress damage on dilution has become increasingly relevant as mining depths increase. In the case of narrow vein mining, the incremental extraction of long-hole rings has the potential to result in a moving high stressed zone at the stope brow. This leads the hanging wall and footwall to experience a spike in the stress to strength ratios as the brow passes. In some cases, the stress to strength ratio may be high enough to result in fracturing or damage to the rock mass. The aim of the study described in this paper was to investigate whether stress damage results in a significant increase in dilution. The study involved analysis of overbreak from 410 case studies from the Kundana Gold mine in Western Australia. Site personnel had already undertaken calibration studies of the stress levels that result in rock mass damage. This calibration, in conjunction with numerical modelling showed that stress damaged stope walls at this mine had on average 50 per cent more overbreak than stope walls where stresses had not exceeded the damage criterion. For a design mining width of 1.5 metres, and with both walls impacted, this represents 36 per cent increase in dilution. After adjustment for possible sources of bias the difference reduced to an average 0.10 metres per stope wall, representing 13 per cent dilution for the mining width under consideration. The potential for stress damage related overbreak should therefore be considered as part of any assessment of narrow vein dilution.

In the technical sense, as well as in the professional sense, the word 'model' can have many meanings. More than 23 000 references were uncovered by a simple literature search on keywords ' MO D EL#. and. (META LLURG#. or. M I NERAL#)' . For the purpose of this paper, 'models' will be considered to be mathematical formulations which attempt to represent or approximate a process. The model may be purely, or a combination of: ò fundamental models, based on the laws of physics, chemistry and thermodynamics; ò semi-empirical or phenomenological models, where an intuitive concept of the process is formulated and found by testwork to fit observed behaviour; and ò empirical or 'black-box' models (including neural networks), where a mathematically convenient form is proposed and fitted. Even under this more restricted definition, which eliminates heuristic and statistical 'models', it is clear that the efforts expended in devising and using models have exploded during the years since the first APCOM Conference in 1961, benefiting from the dramatic decrease in the cost of computer power. This paper reviews the areas of usage of computer modelling in the metallurgical and mineral processing industries, from plant design, through off-line support, to on-line modelling and automatic control. In each area, frontiers of new development of the technology are mentioned. It is noted that, while modelling is now standard practice in design, it is not yet the norm in operating and controlling plants. The reasons for this partial acceptance are, it is argued, less related to the limitations of the technology than to the human and organisational factors involved in transferring technology to implementation.

The Truong Son Fold belt in Indochina hosts the significant Sepon gold-copper district (Laos) and the similar gold-basemetal districts of Phuoc Son and Bong Mieu (Vietnam). With over seven years of exploration, Toronto-listed Olympus Pacific Minerals Inc, is one of few foreign companies that have to date made a substantial investment in mineral exploration in Vietnam.Much of this work has been conducted along the Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture, on the south-eastern limb of the Truong Son Fold belt on the Vietnamese side of the border with Laos. These programs have produced a significant number of gold prospects at varying stages of exploration development. The Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture is a major Paleozoic subduction zone that extends from northern Laos, through Central Vietnam and out into the South China Sea.It represents a Lower Mesozoic collision zone between the Paleozoic-age Truong Son fold-belt terrain to the north, with the crystalline terrain of the Pre-Cambrian Kontum Block to the south. Since its formation, it has been a locus of deep faulting, continental accretion, intensive intrusive activity and mineralisation. This paper briefly discusses the geological setting, structure, metamorphism, mineralisation, exploration history, and proposed mining development of the Olympus Phuoc Son Gold Project, with particular reference to the Phuoc Son û Tam Ky suture.

The northern Drummond and Bowen basins region represents one of AustraliaÆs most prospective areas for epithermal vein and stockwork style gold deposits, with both low and high sulfidation epithermal mineralisation known in the region. 3D-GIS reconstructions, numerical and probabilistic modelling (UDEC, FLAC 3D and WofE) are used here to develop a better understanding of the controls operating on the mineral systems of the region and are aimed at enhancing predictive capabilities. It is difficult with inadvertent explosions to establish fundamental data, especially of original dust, of pressure, temperature etc. and of ventilation oscillations, as exposed personnel rarely survive. Retrospective data from explosions must be derived from damage, from fatalities, from ventilation analyses, from analyses of dusts and other indications of temp- erature and duration of temperature. The five disastrous explosions selected for analysis provide examples of what data can be established as to the cause and extent of explosions. Such information is required for legal etc., inquiries subsequent to explosions, but most importantly to give the best guidance for avoidance of possibility of further Disasters.

The Eastern Distributor Tunnels - the first major road tunnel project in Australia - are the preferred solution to traffic congestion problems, when compared with alternatives, in this inner urban environment. This is because of the reduced impact on residential housing, the improvement of the existing environment, less restrictions on future developments, and a reduction in noise and pollution. Developments leading to a tunnelled solution, traffic needs and reasons for route location are discussed. Criteria for design of tunnel alignments and geometry are described, including the restraints imposed by surface connections on profiles and grades resulting in low rock cover at tunnel portals. The main geotechnical restraints are a major weathered dyke at the shallow large span underground fork and the weathered Ashfield Shale capping the Hawkesbury Sandstone at a portal. Rock cuttability and excavation methods are discussed. Roadheader machines are the most suitable for the varying shallow arched cross sections required and the tunnel lengths involved but the use of blasting in special situations cannot be ruled out. Initial support for the major tunnel lengths will be provided by rock reinforcement in conjunction with shotcrete. Steel ribs are proposed in areas of low cover and weak ground. Final support will comprise an insitu concrete lining. Construction concepts and special tunnelling methods required at the shallow underground forks and tunnels are described.

In early-1989, subsidence due to voids at the top of previously filled stopes and stopes awaiting filling,began to threaten the 15 level fill conveyor horizon. This together with the need to maintain production targets meant that a method was required to significantly increase fill placement.Alternative methods of placing dry fill underground were investigated. One option was to drill 200 mm boreholes from surface directly into stopes 600 - 800 metres underground. A drilling program was successfully undertaken, and resulted in the placement of more than 800 000 tonnes of dry aggregate fill via four boreholes.This paper details the drilling program undertaken and discusses the difficulties encountered, the fill placement system and the project costs.

Resource estimation and selective mining of structurally complex, high nugget orebodies presents a major challenge to the Mine Geologist. At the Golden Pig BIF-hosted gold deposit in Western Australia, an estimation method has been developed that replaces an assay-based resource estimate with one based on mineralisation intensity. Subjective coding of the mineralisation intensity has a more robust connection to local grade than drillhole assays. Indicator variograms of the five mineralisation codes are well structured with anisotropy directions similar to observed structural controls. The proportion of each mineralisation code is estimated and a weighted average of the average grade of each code calculated for a block. Initial validation has shown that the model is a good predictor of the mineralisation intensity, and the application of appropriate local average grade for each mineralisation code gives a reliable block grade estimate.

Constructed between 1885 and 1891, the New Croton Aqueduct (NCA) in New York State is a 50 km long (31 mi) brick-lined tunnel conveying water from the Croton watershed north of New York City to distribution systems in the Bronx and Manhattan. Except at two siphons, the aqueduct operates as an open channel conduit from the New Croton Reservoir downstream 39 km (25 mi) to the Jerome Park Reservoir in the Bronx. The remaining 11 km (6 mi) is operated as a pressurised conduit and includes a major siphon, of circular cross-section, under the Harlem River. The aqueduct has a flow capacity of approximately 1100 million litres of water per day (13 m3/s or 290 million gallons per day) and supplies on average ten per cent of New York CityÆs drinking water. The CityÆs water supply system is operated and maintained by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP). This paper covers the work done during the three main stages of the program to rehabilitate the entire NCA: inspections, design and rehabilitation. It also includes some of the more interesting structural findings of the original construction as well as documents and drawings from the NYCDEP archives. The rehabilitation program has been underway in phases since 1993, with inspections scheduled to minimise outages, allowing this strategic aqueduct to remain in service during critical seasonal periods. The open channel flow section of the aqueduct in the north is horseshoe shaped, with inside dimensions of 4.1 m (13.6 ft) in width and 4 m (13.5 ft) in height. The pressurised section is 3.7 m (12.3 ft) in diameter, and includes a 90 m (330 ft) deep siphon under the Harlem River. A total of 163 million bricks were used in the construction, enough to build a 48 km (30 mi) wall around Manhattan Island, 3 m (10 ft) thick and 15 m (50 ft) high.Between 1993 and 1997 a series of in-tunnel investigations were performed in the open channel portion of the NCA, consisting of field inspection, non-destructive geophysical testing, and coring of the brick liner. Between November 2004 and September 2005, a major inspection program was conducted to assess the condition of the 11 km (6 mi) long pressurised section and all shafts, headhouses and blow-off structures along the entire 50 km (31 mi) alignment. Inspection methods included using an underwater remote operated vehicle (ROV) equipped with sonar and cameras to inspect the deep siphon, fibre optics examinations of probe holes drilled through and beyond the brick lining, and core holes and geophysical inspections to assess properties of the liner and behind-the-liner materials. A water pressure and test grouting program was conducted to assess methods and expected grout takes for the rehabilitation work in the pressurised sections. The rehabilitation program is anticipated to be completed in 2010.

Semi-confined, trachy-andesite sills which overlie the German Creek Seam, within the critical tensile strain zone, form major groundwater hazards to longwall mining at the German Creek underground mines. The water contained in these aquifers is normally neutral, but highly saline. Techniques used to detect aquifers include routine air-lift pumping in exploratory drill holes, downhole geophysical and geological logging and upstage packer testing. Hydraulic constants are calculated from pump-out and pump-in test results. Hydraulic parameters for the calculation of mine inflow rates are determined from pump-out test results because these tests appear to be more representative of aquifer drainage during goat dewatering than pump- in testing. During mining of the first longwall block at Central Colliery, caving fractures intersected overlying aquifers after the longwall had retreated 40m, and mine water inflow rate rapidly increased from less than one litre/sec to 25 litres/sec. The amount of water pumped out of the mine during first panel extraction was 140 megalitres with drawdown occurring over an area of 168 hectares. In the Southern Colliery area approximately 324 megalitres of highly saline water which is actively stored in the Aquila Sill area will be pre-drained from six well points prior to longwall mining. With effective pre-drainage from surface drill holes, maximum inflow rate into the mine during initial goafing can be reduced from 165 litres/sec to about 45 litres/sec.

In the last decade of precious metal exploration, several important gold discoveries have conclusively demonstrated that epithermal gold deposits formed in what were once active geothermal areas. A significant deposit in this category is the Lihir Island discovery in the Tabar-Ferri volcanic island arc off the coast of New Ireland, Papua New Guinea. Within that arc are the Feni Islands where exploration by Esso PNG Inc. and City Resources Ltd. has been carried out since early 1984. On Ambitle Island in the Feni Group, an epithermal gold prospect located within a young caldera has been tested by diamond drilling. The drillholes intersected a boiling zone at depth beneath acid altered 'cap' rocks. The zone is 30-60 metres thick and comprises hydraulically fractured and mineralised lavas with gold grades of 1-7 g/t. The prospect is still an active geothermal area with current boiling in the zone tested. As on Lihir, the recent epithermal alteration and mineralisation overprints a relict prophyry system. On Ambitle and the adjacent Babase Island several other, cooler exciting gold prospects are currently being tested.

The Miitel nickel sulfide deposit has been overprinted by a family of late stage structures that have acted as conduits for fluids that have contaminated the orebody with arsenic minerals. This has resulted in highly variable and unpredictable arsenic grades throughout the Miitel orebody. The ore produced from Miitel is processed under a toll-treatment agreement with Western Mining Resources Kambalda Nickel Concentrator. Part of this arrangement includes a financial penalty if monthly average arsenic grades in ore delivered exceed 800 ppm. This constraint has provided an extra challenge to the Miitel mine geologist in addition to daily underground duties. Routine development and stope mapping, close spaced sampling and cross-sectional interpretation were used in building an understanding of the structural controls of arsenic mineralisation and ore repetition at the Miitel nickel mine, and in providing maximum input to mine planning and scheduling. The distribution of structures responsible for arsenic introduction is now well understood from detailed mapping, sampling, and interpretation. By applying these insights to mine scheduling, the operation has successfully managed arsenic levels within the required specifications. Geological mapping has also improved the understanding of the structural complexity of the ore deposit, leading to the addition of ore tonnes and an increased confidence in resource modelling. Regular sampling and tight controls on data quality provided confidence in a strongly skewed arsenic data set. Multiple Indicator Kriging has been used for resource estimation of the arsenic contaminated nickel ore since it allows explicit control of the spatial influence of extreme grades in the positively skewed arsenic sample population. Both the grade control and exploration data sets are used to model the arsenic distribution.

Many of the stacking and reclaiming machines employed in the mining industry today are operating in ways that were never envisaged in the days before they were commissioned, with greater throughput, increased annualised operating hours and load cycles well in excess of their original specification requirements being the norm. In many cases these machines were supplied prior to the widespread use of finite element modelling or, in the era when such software became commercially available, those supplied designed using simplified and/or coarser meshes than would be employed today. With many of these machines being expected to operate for many years to come, it is important that their ongoing reliability be maintained and their operational limits understood. In this paper, a case study is used to outline the method required for estimating the fatigue life already consumed and the likely real life left in a machine. By reference to the machineÆs prior operating history, the use of strain gauges in the field and the development of finely meshed finite element analysis (FEA), a coherent picture of the machineÆs operational state can be generated and then investment/maintenance decisions made to ensure continuity of machine operation.

Hematite ore has been mined in the Southern Middleback Ranges as blast furnace feed for the steelworks at Whyalla, by what was then BHP, since 1991. With the floating of BHP Integrated Steel as OneSteel in 2001 and the subsequent loss of key mining personnel, breakdowns in grade control methods and procedures occurred. These were compounded by changes in orebody characteristics and grade distribution leading to poor reserve recovery and poor grade control, both which resulted in loss of control of ore specification and severe deviation from the mining schedule. As a result, a total review of grade control, mining method and scheduling procedures was undertaken as well as a review of contractor quality assurance. It was found that sampling methods were poor and unrepresentative, grade control blocking processes were outdated and did not reflect the geology of the deposit, the ore mining method was outdated and did not respect the geometry of the orebody, reconciliation methods were being completed globally and were not reflective of individual areas of the deposit, and that deviations from the mine plan were occurring due to access to high-grade areas outside the schedule in order to bring stockpiles back on grade. Based on these findings, updated sample splitter systems were fitted to drill hole rigs, double bench sampling was implemented (2 + 4 m samples as opposed to 1 + 8 m sample) and a three-dimensional cellular grade control system introduced to better reflect the geology and orientation of the deposit. At the same time ore mining was changed from front end loaders mining on 8 m benches to excavator mining on three lifts on 8 m benches; this aided selectivity and respected the geometry of the orebodies aiding cleaner recovery. Reconciliation is now completed on a blast-by-blast basis, which allows for quick and easy identification of poorly performing areas of the resource model that can then be incorporated back into resource model updates. Regular daily and weekly meetings are also held with emphasis on the mining schedule to ensure no deviation from the schedule in the long term. These improvements have resulted in a lift in reserve recovery both globally and locally associated at the same time with improvement in grade.
