The properties of bearing metals are of considerable interest to mine engineers, since continuous running of mine and mill machinery is of vital importance. Of the several available types of bearing metal, the low melting point lead or tin base alloys are most generally used in mining plant because of the ease of replacement and the possibility of remelting scrap metal from old bearings. The most valuable property of these "white metals," however, is the plasticity which gives a self-aligning character to the bearings, enablingthem to adjust themselves to inequalities which may exist at the time of fitting, or which may develop during running. The object of the present paper is to explain in general terms the physical structures of white bearing metals, and to point out that constitution rather than composition determines the physical properties of these alloys. The same, indeed, is true of most engineering alloys. In steels, for example, a change in the structure may affect the properties to a far greater extent than a change of chemical composition.Structural changes in steels are produced chiefly by heat treatment. The general mechanism of recrystallisation for cold worked metal is well established, and need be only briefly summarised with a few references to recent articles which clarify minor points. The types of extension, whether by stretching, drawing, hammering, rolling, etc., do not alter the general principles (1), although quantitative results may differ somewhat, particularly with regard to differences between the surface and interior of samples.These principles can be summarised as follows: The first stage in annealing is a recovery (sometimes known as relaxation) of physical properties such as hardness, elongation, etc., without any appearance of recrystallisation; the second stage involves a further alteration in physical properties, accompanying the formation of new recrystallised grains which replace the original structure; a possible third stage involves an increase in the grain size of the completely recrystallised structure by absorption of smaller grains by larger ones. These three stages will be referred to as recovery, recrystallisation, and grain growth. Depending on conditions, the three stages may be clearly marked or may occur more or less simultaneously.For a given annealing temperature, cold deformations below a certain amount fail to give recrystallisation, and the final structure consists of the original grains which have recovered and possibly become more equiaxed. When a certain deformation, critical for that annealing temperature, is given, recrystallisation can occur, and will give the maximum recrystallised grain size.Increasing deformations beyond this give progressively smaller grain sizes.For each material there is a minimum recrystallisation temperature, below which recrystallisation will not occur whatever the deformation or time of annealing. For a given deformation there is a temperature, critical for that deformation, below which recrystallisation will not occur, and above which it will take place with increasing rapidity.

This paper firstly examines the pollu- tion potential of burning colliery wastes. A comparison of two means of estimating the pro- pensity for coal to combust spontaneously is next presented. The use of microwaves, as a new procedure, is discussed in detail, while a comparison of the results is made with a modi- fied adiabatic technique. A number of coals that are known to combust spontaneously was tested, as were some coals that are not consi- dered to have self heating potential.

The financing of mineral ventures is usually supported by the valuation of a mineral asset, the physical size and composition of which have been determined within quantified limits of accuracy in order that the lending or investment risk can be assessed. The Resource or Ore Reserve estimation is the measurement of that asset and may be the outcome of complicated processes of interpretation and estimation requiring an extensive knowledge and understanding of the general nature of ore occurrences, and of the particular deposit under review. In arriving at an interpretation of the nature and physical distribution of minerals in a deposit, observations may only be available from widely spaced samples and geological knowledge and principles are of prime importance. Consultants may be asked by the lending or investing body to "provide comfort" on the quality of the Resource or Reserve estimations and providing such comfort casts substantial obligations of diligence on the consultant.

The Water Board has been involved in the development and ipgrading of sewerage facilities in the Blue Mountains since 1980. In 1984 the Board prepared a report that dealt with the Blue Mountains Sewage Effluent Management study. Successive 3ovemments have been concerned about development in the 3lue Mountains and the effect this development is having on the luality of the streams flowing into the Blue Mountains National ?ark (presently up for World Heritage Listing).

HIGHWALL MINING - DECISION TO MINEUlan had completed operations in the first Open Cut area due to high stripping ratios and the presence of geological features which destroyed a significant portion of the coal in the upper part of the seam. The pit had been abandoned in 1994 and operations had moved to a new location to the north west.

There is considerable economic incentive to increase the angle of open pit walls so as to reduce the total volume of waste to be moved to gain access to an orebody. However, a number of slope failures has increased the awareness of mine operators to the potential and consequences of slope failure. Sophisticated methods for the analysis of slope stability have been developed but they rely on an understanding of the appropriate parameters to describe the structural properties of the slope materials. Unfortunately, these properties change with time.The excavation of an open pit mine removes the constraint and weight of the overlying material and allows the newly formed slope to release previously locked in stress. The release of this stress allows the opening of joints and leads to a significant reduction in bulk modulus. The rock mass is also further affected by damage from nearby blasts. Such damage is cumulative and further reduces the modulus of the near surface material and weakens the bonds between structural elements in the slope.

In October 1993 it was decided to undertake the fourth phase of mining at Big Bell. This decision followed the exhaustion of open pit reserves in January 1993. Two stages of mining were proposed for the new underground mine. The initial stage would mine the remnant ore, consisting of the rib and crown pillars and lower grade ore on the hangingwall and footwall side of the old open stopes, which were mined from the 1930s to 1950s. Most of the old open stopes were backfilled with either deslimed mill tailings or development mullock, both of which were economic to recover. However, the mineable ore from this resource was difficult to evaluate. The second stage focused on mining ore outside the remnant areas and was initially proposed as a Core and Shell method under a caving hangingwall. This method has since been superseded with sublevel caving, in part due to the very high and deviatoric stress conditions encountered at Big Bell and the relatively long mining cycle required for open stoping. The problems and challenges discussed in this paper will cover the identification of remnant ore reserves, dewatering the old workings, and remnant mining.

The Jabiluka uranium mine was constructed in the Ngarradj catchment, a right bank tributary of Magela Creek in the Northern Territory. The Jabiluka Mineral Lease is adjacent to Kakadu National Park, near an area listed as Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention and recognised under the World Heritage Convention. In the late dry season of 1998 and prior to the 1998 - 1999 wet season, a stream-monitoring program was implemented in the Ngarradj catchment to collect baseline data on sediment transport within the catchment to assess and proactively manage associated impacts caused by mining at Jabiluka. Stream suspended mud concentration, stream discharge and rainfall data were collected for four wet seasons (1998 - 2002) giving an almost continuous data set. The stream system has high natural variability dependent on rainfall intensity and subsequent discharge and pre-wet season fire distribution and intensity. In general, mud concentration is elevated at the commencement of the wet season until about February. This is caused by first-flush removal of surface material detached during the dry season by agents such as bioturbation (including anthropogenic activity), wind erosion and surface desiccation. Water quality trigger values downstream of the mine were derived using upstream percentiles and the before-after-control-impact, paired site design. Both analyses showed no observable impact from mine construction in 1998 or during the study period. However, the impacts of dry season fires could be clearly detected. The data set provides good baseline information for future assessment at Jabiluka and demonstrates the need to view measured parameter values on a catchment-wide basis with knowledge of rainfall, discharge and fire distribution.

The Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leaching Process is based upon the direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide or lead-zinc bulk sulphide concentrates to produce zinc sulphate in solution and elemental sulphur in the leach residues. The zinc sulphate solution is compatible with conventional purification and electrowinning technology. The pressure leach residues can be treated for the recovery of elemental sulphur, lead and silver. With the conversion of sulphur to the elemental form, zinc pressure leaching allows zinc winning to be independent of sulphuric acid production. Direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide concentrates was started commercially in October 1980. Continuing research and development studies have defined various pressure leaching configurations for integration with existing roast-leach operations, for grass roots plants, or for plants which are to have the roast-leach section completely replaced. These studies have included the treatment of zinc concentrates from various Australian producers and the development of process flowsheets for potential applications in Australia.

In the world-class mining district of Morococha, epithermal polymetallic replacement bodies and veins overprint porphyry mineralisation and skarns related to subvolcanic intrusions of Miocene age, thus indicating ore formation in two different environments, separated in time or forming a continuum. The district covers an area of about 70 km2 in the north-western part of the Domo de Yauli complex in theWestern Cordillera of central Peru and is part of the Miocene polymetallic belt, also hosting the deposits of Colquijirca (Bendez· et al, 2008b) and Cerro de Pasco (Baumgartner, FontbotT and Vennemann, 2008). Multiple late-Miocene porphyry stocks intruded Permian, Triassic-Jurassic and late-Cretaceous sedimentary carbonate and volcano-sedimentary formations, as well as large mid-Miocene barren intrusions. Extensive field work and detailedmapping of different styles of orebodies suggest that ore formation in the area was related to the late-Miocene magmatism. Good outcrop conditions and superimposing of different mineralisation styles make Morococha an ideal location for studying ore-forming processes in a complex porphyry-related magmatic-hydrothermal system in which porphyry-to-epithermal transition occurred. The aim of this work is to assess the performance of different constructive solutions against explosions on the strength of masonry walls. The solutions tested, namely an external metal mesh, a glass fibre film on the external face of the wall and a basalt fibre film located on the inner face of the wall, have low to medium cost and are originally designed for other purposes, like seismic protection. Four cubic boxes 3 × 3 × 3 m were built using each of the solutions and typical masonry blocks. In the tests, a spherical plastic explosive initiated in the centre was placed at scaled distance of 2.9 m/kg1/3, so that moderate damage would be caused on the wall. In order to assess the performance of the explosive, pressure gauges were placed at the wall and at different distances from the explosion. Additionally, vibrations were monitored with seismographs in the far field and a high-speed camera was used to estimate the shock wave velocity during the tests. The resulting damage has been evaluated on 13 points of the external wall of each box using a rebound hammer. Damage maps have been drawn for each wall based on these measurements and damage has been assessed inside the box considering the fragments mass launched during the test. The use of external metal mess leads to a decrease of 34 per cent on damage of the external wall and 38 per cent reduction of spalling. Since I first enrolled to study Mining Engineering, the idea of working with big machinery and explosives has always appealed to me. After a few courses at uni, combined with vacation work and a number of presentations at the New LeadersÆ Conferences I had attended, I began to realise that the explosives side seemed to have more appeal than the others. As I look back on the past two and a half years that I have spent with Orica Australia Pty Ltd as part of their graduate program, I would have never imagined the dynamics of explosives in mining. This I put down to the ever changing and rapid development in technology converting blasting techniques into a defined predictable science. The opportunities I have been given have delivered all the appeals from when I first started my study. As a result of my entry into a profession that uses explosives to deliver broken rock in a range of mining and construction projects, through the use of advanced blasting technology and products, my experiences have been wide and varied. These experiences have included the use of OricaÆs i-konÖ detonator technology and blast design software to allow for blasting operations to occur in a range of environmentally sensitive quarrying and construction projects throughout New Zealand, to the implementation of various Orica blast based services aimed at improving dragline dig performance and reducing coal loss thus improve overall mine sustainability in the coal mines of Central Queensland, to the advanced utilisation of Orica explosive products and technology in a number of the worlds largest copper mines in Chile. I have witnessed first hand the blasting technology available within Orica Mining Services to both deliver fundamental changes in mining results and in turn kick off my career with a bang.

Magmatism is of first order significance in the extension process. Continental extension is terminated when sea-floor spreading commences, but sea-floor spreading will not commence if magmas do not begin to arrive in sufficient volumes. In the oceanic lithosphere, the rate of magma supply may determine whether sea-floor spreading takes place, or lithospheric extension as the result of normal fault arrays. In continental crust thickened as the result of previous compressional orogeny, the availability of magma may determine a completely different process. The author has examined metamorphic core complexes in a number of tectonic environments, in the North American Cordillera, in the Aegean Sea, Greece, and in the Solomon Sea, Papua and New Guinea. What these terrains have in common is a major collisional orogeny predating a major extensional event. The "roll back" of the lithospheric flexure associated with subduction can be seen as the "driving force" for extension in two of these cases. Metamorphic core complexes in these environments are characterized by domal exposures of crustal scale ductile shear zones, underneath which massive plutonic complexes have been formed. Emplacement of these plutons is associated with anatexis of the surrounding rocks. Migmatite complexes are well developed in the Aegean and Solomon Sea core complexes, and in some core complexes in the Basin and Range. Chains of core complexes can be explained as the result of basaltic and andesitic magmas derived from a linear belt of relatively hot rising asthenosphere, in a zone of attempted continental "break up". It is argued that core complexes are the results of magmas derived from relatively short lived mantle "hot spots" impingeing on extending continental crust which has been overthickened during previous compressional orogeny.

The Gordonstone Project with a capital cost in excess of $500 million will become the largest underground coal mine in Australia. The project development decision was taken on 31 July, 1990 and at 31 May, 1991 construction was approximately 35 per cent complete. The first train of processed product coal will be railed to Gladstone during December 1992. The general theme of this paper therefore will address the planning and development processes at Gordonstone particularly the interrelatedness of technical, production, construction and environmental disciplines to ensure success during operations.

Unprecedented political, economic, and social change throughout the world will have an increasingly profound effect on the dynamics of the world's mining industry. Analysis of the early financial trends in this development (statistics on exploration expenditure, and investment flows) gives some insight into the magnitude of structural change and its implications for established mining economics and companies.Increasing confidence in the stability of many third world and developing countries is attracting exploration and investment capital that had previously been largely directed to established mining economies in North America, Australia, Europe and Southern Africa. Some of the projects requiring capital and technology in the CIS, Africa and Latin America are technically very attractive. The end of the 'cold war' and the influence of the IMF is gradually changing their risk profile for mining investment.

The use of images to determine blast fragmentation is the only feasible technique when one does not want to disturb the production cycle. However, three major problems exist with the use of images. The first is determining real size from a two-dimensional particle, the second is estimating the fines which are missing due to image resolution and particle size range, and the third is proper sampling such that a statistical probability can be calculated for the distribution. Once these problems are resolved, the tedious process of digitizing images by hand may be automated. This paper describes the present techniques used at the JKMRC to "size" blast fragmentation, estimate the missing fines using the Rosin-Rammler equation, determine the sampling error using Gy's sampling equations, and extract the particles from an image using an IBM-AT computer.

Traditionally, the predominant drilling method in open pit mining has been large hole rotary drilling using cumbersome, inflexible equipment offering merely limited scope for improvements in pit design and overall costs. By contrast, the recent development of comparatively light high-pressure down-the-hole hammer crawlers has paved the way for new ideas and trends. High penetration rates coupled with superior mobility and fast set-ups contributing to substantial productivity gains have resulted in a renascence for this drilling method in open pits. The ability to cover a wide range of hole diameters and angles gives designers unique drill pattern possibilities especially when establishing steep and stable pit slopes. As pre-split holes, buffer holes and production holes all can be drilled by using the same equipment, there are, there are obvious advantages in production scheduling as well as in materials handling and service. This paper presents some case stories, which will demonstrate the benefits and improvements that the introduction of new drilling methods and equipment has brought to open pit mining operations.

Titrimetric studies have been carried out on the activated carbons Kintal 1105, Norit 2520 and Kuraray 2GA. Titration curves of the carbons before and after acid and water washing and gold loading indicate that the acid-base properties of the carbons are affected by both the method of treatment and also by the loading of gold. It is considered that the pKa values of the functional groups on the carbon surface are in the regions of 11, 7 and 3 respectively.

The stability of access tunnels is one of the main engineering challenges in deep underground mine construction. Many underground hard rock mining operations are now reaching depths where the induced stresses are such that sudden and violent failure of the excavations can occur very soon after construction. The loading conditions on the installed ground support schemes are often underestimated by conventional engineering design methods. Therefore, the actual loading conditions often exceed the installed ground support capacity. This can result in failure of the excavations and, in extreme cases, potentially closure of mining operations amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars in lost production. More frequently, violent excavation instability at great depth causes operational delays, costly and unplanned rehabilitation, as well as risks to worker safety. In order to address this challenge, this paper briefly summarises a modern, innovative approach to the design and construction of mine development at great depth. The process follows seven main steps. The first step is to characterise the rock mass strength, structure and stress. The second step is a stability assessment, which identifies the plausible modes of excavation failure, based on the rock mass characterisation. The third step is the definition of an excavation geometry which is harmonic to the high stress conditions. The fourth step is to prepare a site-specific face destressing drill and blast design which will reduce the potential for rock mass instability during the development construction cycle. The fifth step is to accurately quantify the expected loading conditions on the installed ground support. The method of doing so is uniquely analytical and probabilistic. It is based on the natural mechanical relationships between rock strength, structure, induced stress and the physical characteristics of the instability, including its mass and ejection velocity. The sixth step of the design process is to specify a ground support scheme arrangement with sufficient strength and displacement capacity to exceed the rock mass demand by a safe margin. The final stage is to install the complete ground support scheme using mechanised technologies which minimise the exposure of the equipment operators to unsupported ground at the tunnel face.
