The great advances made in the application of solvent extraction to the recovery of copper from low grade ore sources over the past 15 to 20 years are well known. Solvent extraction is an essential step in the recovery and purification of copper from dilute sulphate leach solutions by which some one million tonnes of copper are now electrowon annually. A reagent is also available for the selective recovery of copper from chloride leach solutions and this may hold the key to the processing of complex sulphide ore concentrates. By comparison, the use of solvent extraction in the recovery and processing of zinc has as yet found little favour and is confined to only a few specific and comparatively small applications. This is despite the ready availability of a large number of low grade zinc sources and zinc-bearing wastes and residues. It is suggested that this difference is due in large part to the absence of suitable reagents having the particular features required to enable them to fit into a solvent extraction - electrowinning based process for zinc. Ideally, for the recovery of zinc from dilute sulphate solution, an extractant should operate on a proton exchange principle and be strong for zinc in the same way that o-hydroxyaryloxime reagents are strong towards copper. It should load efficiently with zinc at the pH of typical sulphate feed streams without the need for neutralisation and yet be stripped efficiently by spent zinc electrolyte. Another factor of major importance for many applications, however, is that it should be highly selective for zinc over ferric iron. These features have now been realised in a development extractant DS5846, which is a formulation of a novel class of reagent currently under investigation by Zeneca Specialties. The properties of this reagent are described with respect to selectivity, isotherms and how they compare with phosphoric and thiophosphoric acids that have been previously proposed for the extraction of zinc. For the recovery of zinc from concentrated chloride solutions a solvating or neutral donor type of extractant is required which again should ideally have high selectivity for zinc over a number of other metals, particularly iron. The new reagent Acorga ZNX50 is based on a formulation of a novel class of compound developed specifically for this purpose. It gives efficient extraction of zinc from feed solutions that are four to six molar in chloride ion but is readily stripped at 60 - 65¦C using either water, dilute brine, or spent zinc chloride electrolyte. The reagent is highly selective for zinc over iron and a range of other metals including cadmium, arsenic, lead and magnesium.

"Optimisation of drill and blast design and engineering can deliver a significant positive impact on the profitability of any mining operation; however, true engineering of the blasting process is less common than might be thought. The paper that follows explores this gap and suggests a process control-based approach to the challenge.The concept of applying modifications to drill and blast designs in order to achieve efficiency improvements in downstream mining processes is far from new. However, the author suggests that the practical application has become less than rigorous in a number of different sectors of the mining industry in a wide range of countries.There is a common tendency for the design process to become simplified to the point where the objective is merely the communication of instructions to field implementers (drillers, explosive suppliers, blasters, etc). In effect ‘design’ often degrades to ‘cut and paste’ with consequences that vary from mild to critical, with respect to the profitability of the business.Engineering of the drill and blast process involves the design function, not on a one-off basis but rather as a component of a more complete cyclical process that includes a statement of objectives, a design based on a suggested hypothesis, field measurement of results, comparison with the target ‘set point’ and the application of control measures followed by new measurement, including interpretation of the results in financial terms.When applied in this fashion, engineering provides practitioners with the means to optimise the drill and blast impact on the full spectrum business result of the mining activity.These concepts are discussed with reference to a surface gold mining operation applying run-of-mine heap leach extraction. Engineering optimisation by adapting process control and measurement techniques is demonstrated to be a key component of the solution set applied to generate enhanced operations productivity and stakeholder value. It is shown that a combination of rigorous measurement, model calibration and hands-on quality assurance/quality control facilitates the creation of a road map to profitability, stressing the need to consider economic trade-offs between operational expense (investment) and measurement of enhanced value (return on investment).The process, however, does not cease at this point. Implementation of true design practices, incorporating innovation and discipline in implementation or execution can drive the process to deliver demonstrable, technically validated outcomes. Furthermore, these technical results can be related to financially quantifiable impacts. However, this accomplishment does not guarantee that these gains or savings will reach the bottom line of those mining, quarrying and construction companies that begin the process with such high hopes.CITATION:Adamson, W R, 2015. This paper describes the mining methods and strategy used to extract the 5 Orebody crown pillar at the Isa Lead Mine over the past five years. The bulk of the crown pillar was extracted by the use of sublevel open stope method. An uphole bench stope was mined to scavenge the remaining ore. Geomechanical issues associated with the crown pillar extraction are described. Stope sizes were gradually increased on a stope by stope basis. This has allowed the maximising of ore recovery while relevant risks were managed. The principles in designing ore rib pillars against various types of fill materials are also described.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. This paper aims to highlight the global exploration opportunities that exist in connection with Ural-Alaskan (UA)-type intrusions. The key economic importance of UA intrusions is the existence of metallic platinum (mainly iron-platinum alloys) associated generally with chromite mineralisation and located within a dunite core, especially its coarse-grained part. Being very dense and resistant to erosion, platinum can form rich placers as the intrusion erodes. Big multimillion ounce placer platinum deposits of this type have historically been successfully mined for many years (eg Russia, Colombia and Alaska).However, large-scale exploration and mining of platinum placers currently occurs only in the Russian Far East. Outside of Russia, there is now little or no understanding of this type of deposit and its economic importance. Using successful operations in Russia as examples, it is demonstrated that there are many opportunities for similar discoveries all around the world, especially around the Pacific Rim, where such intrusions tend to be concentrated. Examples of highly prospective areas in eastern Australia and New Zealand are given. There is also excellent potential in British Columbia (BC) Canada, South-East Asia (Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia) and South America (Colombia and Ecuador).CITATION:Nazimova, Y and Ryan, G, 2015. The German mining industry uses different residues for backfilling and stowing. A hydraulic pipe conveying technology for these materials has shown advantages for the transportation into the mine. Pipeline conveying systems are able to bridge long distances, they save room within the underground workings and they save staff and costs. Absolutely necessary for successful use of the hydraulic conveying technology is the knowledge about the unusual non-Newtonian flow properties of solid/liquid mixtures like pastes and slurries. The flow resistance of these materials cannot be described easily by one viscosity. Owing to a yield point and a pseudo-plastic behaviour the viscosity changes with the shear rate and with the streaming velocity inside the pipe. Also these flow behaviours depend very sensitively on the liquid/solid-ratio, often so dramatically that gravimetric or volumetric dosing equipment is not in a position to control the production of backfill pastes. Quality changes of the solid raw materials (particle size distribution, density, mineralogical composition) lead to additional difficulties. The first experiences with hydraulic backfilling plants were troubled by plugged pipes, a bad backfill quality caused by unnecessarily high water content and high costs for chemical binders to solidify the backfill. The installation of viscosity controlled paste production leads to success with the hydraulic backfill technology. A development of the DMT, a bypass pipe-viscometer, has been the key technology. The system is able to analyse on-line, difficult, sticky and abrasive substances and determine their non-Newtonian flow properties. Because the system measures real physical values it is in a position to pre-calculate process relevant parameters like the pressure drop of the backfilling paste in the conveying pipeline. Newer types of the viscometer system also measure the slurry density and calculate its composition. These systems have proven a success controlling backfill paste production plants. They offer a secure prevention of pipeline plugging and a production of high quality backfill pastes with a water content as low as possible.

The Sundance gold mine, located 2.5 km east of the town of Batchelor in the Northern Territiory, has produced over 5300 oz of gold since it was discovered in 1978. Sundance is unique in the Pine Creek Inlier in that the ore is hosted in palaeo-karst detritus and crystalline magnesite of the Early Proterozoic Coomalie Dolomite. This paper presents a summary of the geology of the mine, and describes the methods used during the two periods of mining.

This paper summarises the current status of the mining sector in Poland in terms of vertical transport system safety. Selected results of research programs conducted at the AGH-UST relating to mine hoist system safety are reviewed. The conclusions support the notion that the costs of vertical transport systems can be reduced, while at the same time maintaining the required safety and reliability levels. Novel solutions: movable fender beams HWR, linings modar« and the integrated shock absorbers PHH for conveyance guiding systems fully confirm this hypothesis.

It is believed that disc cutter shape affects rock fracture and therefore cutter performance and cutter life. However, the current generation of disc cutters is made of hardened steel and these cutters wear rapidly and consequently they are unable to maintain their original shape in strong and abrasive rock. This wear problem could be reduced if the cutter was made from a harder material. Unfortunately as material hardness increases so does the propensity for brittle failure. In this study the optimum cutter shapes were identified by studying the mechanics of rock/tool interaction. The results showed that bevel and wedge cutters are better than cutters with dome and flat edges. A new cutter was designed, based on this result, using a harder material to increase the life by a factor of 20.

The project is undertaken by Elgas Pty Ltd, a 50 per cent joint venture between AGL and BOC, to store 65 000 t of LPG in underground storage at Port Botany, NSW. The contractor, Concrete Constructions Pty Ltd, elected to use drilling and blasting techniques. The project specification called for the following works to be excavated: Access Shaft:122 m (out of 140 m total depth), 6.0 m diameter (selected by the contractor),Operation Shaft:125 m (out of 150 m total depth), 4.0 m diameter,Water Curtain Gallery:500 m (Later extended by additional 270 m), 4.0 m wide and 3.5 m high,Storage Caverns:910 m, 14.0 m wide, 11.0 m high,Top Heading:14.0 m wide, 5.5 m high,Bench:14.0 m wide, 5.5 m high,Connection Galleries:250 m, 5.5 m wide, 5.5 m high.A total of 156 000 cubm of rock to be excavated.

The Melbourne City Link Project has two tunnels, the Domain and Burnley Tunnels, which have been constructed by Transfield Obayashi Joint Venture (TOJV) under a design and construct contract. The two tunnels are located essentially under the Kings Domain, the Yarra River and, in the case of the longer Burnley Tunnel, under the inner suburb of Richmond. The Burnley Tunnel is 3.5 km long and reaches a depth of 65 m at the central Swan Street Shaft, the invert being at RL -60 m. The Domain Tunnel is 1.6 km long, with the invert reaching RL -20. The tunnels were driven, for the most part, in the siltstone and sandstone of the Silurian Age Melbourne Formation. Construction aspects of the driven tunnels as related to the engineering geology have been described by Hutchison et al (1998). The Silurian bedrock is a fractured rock aquifer that is connected to overlying alluvial aquifers. Excavation of the tunnels allowed temporary groundwater inflows which substantially de-pressurised portions of the various aquifers. This de-pressurisation provided the potential to accelerate on-going secondary consolidation rates of the Holocene Aged Coode Island Silt (CIS) and the older Quaternary Fishermens Bend Silt (FBS) deposits, in areas where these materials directly overly the aquifers. As a large portion of the urban area of South Melbourne and the old river course of the Yarra River contain extensive CIS deposits, and were within the drawdown influence of the tunnels, the management of the hydrogeological regime was very important. The permanent design of the tunnels comprised drained and undrained sections (a partially tanked design) which, along with some permanent recharge, provide long-term protection against the possibility of accelerated settlement rates. During construction TOJV implemented a comprehensive groundwater management plan to deal with issues related to the temporary drawdown of the aquifers and the temporary acceleration of settlement. This paper describes the hydrogeological regime, the effects of the tunnelling, the monitoring programs, the extensive temporary recharge system, and the consultation program that TOJV utilised to manage the hydrogeological issues.

This paper compares and evaluates the impact of income tax and value-added tax on the decision to explore for minerals or to develop a mine in four countries: Australia, Papua New Guinea, Argentina and Indonesia. Three aspects are considered in depth:- domestic tax rules applicable to mining projects;- taxation of foreign mining investment and foreign providers of expertise;- taxation of project finance (other than equity) from foreign sources.Specific tax issues discussed include tax deductibility of various costs, treatment of tax losses, special tax incentives, comparative treatment of various corporate structures, non-resident withholding taxes, and tax costs of various forms of project finance. The paper also illustrates the comparative impact of income tax on rates of return by means of a simulation of a mining project in each of the four countries. The simulation demonstrates why the highest rate of return may be obtained in Argentina and the lowest in Australia.Relevant features of the income tax systems in each country (at 15 February 1990) are summarized and compared in several tables annexed to the naner.

Rampura Agucha Pb-Zn Mine (RAM) is located about 200 km to the south-west of Jaipur in the state of Rajasthan, India. Open pit mining operations commenced in 1988 and continued to 2018. RAM open pit footprint is the largest in India with length of 2000 m, width 1500 m and depth of 400 m. Development of an underground mine under the operating pit commenced in 2013, through trial mining longhole open stoping with cemented backfill was established as a preferred mining method. Nine years in operations underground mine has reached the production capacity of 4.5 MT, which represent more than 70 per cent of the ore volume mined by the pit. RAM is currently the world second largest underground Pb-Zn mine.

East Nelson and Marlborough, in the northeast of the South Island, contain a wide variety of metallic minerals, including gold, silver, copper, chromite, antimony and scheelite, but no sustained metallic mining industry has evolved. Gold was the most sought-after mineral during the first century of European settlement and numerous discoveries were made but these failed to live up to expectations. While traces of gold are widespread in east Nelson, including in quartz veins in Nelson City, no payable deposits were found. In Marlborough the probability of a gold discovery had initially seemed remote but all this changed with the finding of rich deposits in the bed of the Wakamarina River in 1864, which provided a much-needed boost to the provincial economy. However, the decline of gold mining in Marlborough began virtually as soon as it had commenced. Extensive floods in 1865 hastened the exodus of miners to the profitable new fields of the West Coast.

Whilst employed by Dyno Nobel as the Technical Services Engineer û Brisbane, I was asked, as part of a contractual agreement, to look at optimising PioneerÆs blasting process to provide the most effective rock to the new crushing and screening plant. This paper details the preliminary blast designs and practices that have been in use at the quarry and the initial changes made to these designs, and the effect they have had on the excavation and crusher performance.

Mining the Carpathia orebody at the Ardlethan tin mine in the late 1970s involved an innovative approach to underground mining which stretched the limits of drilling and blasting techniques. Holes of up to 95 m in length were drilled and blasted from the surface to extract an orebody which extended from 45 m to approximately 95 m below surface. This approach resulted in the elimination of an underground drilling sublevel, thus minimising the costs and hazards associated with underground drilling and blasting. Now, almost 30 years on, this method would probably still be the most appropriate choice.

The green energy transition is speculated to cause an increase in the demand for raw materials while recycling rates are improving; discoveries are required to maintain supply. Geological remote sensing offers a cost-effective way of exploring mineral resources. While satellite and airborne imaging are routinely used for exploration targeting, a gap remains at the outcrop scale. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is advantageous for large-scale regional mapping, typically performed from satellite or airborne platforms. Accurately mapping geological lithologies remains challenging in inaccessible areas, such as rough terrain or mine sites. Proximal sensing techniques can boost geological activities’ reliability, safety, and efficiency in exploration or during mining activities. It also generates objective, reproducible results and valuable raw data that can be archived, further processed, and re-interpreted. Ground-based hyperspectral imaging of outcrops has steadily increased during the last decade due to sensor development and better processing routines. There is often a big technology gap related to mineral mapping, integration of images and spectra (reduction in manual identification of minerals and types) and hyperspectral data visualisation through remote sensing. TEXMiN Foundation, in collaboration with its industry partner Dassault Systemes Foundation, carried out the project, ‘Developing Hyperspectral Image Processing and Analysis, build a rich library of Hyperspectral images of a vast range of minerals from India which will help in increasing prediction accuracy of mineral deposit for mining exploration’.

In terms of tunnelling the mining industry is generally thought of as the crude cousin of the civil construction industry. Mining has tended to concentrate on speed and flexibility rather than the high standards required in civil tunnelling. Historically this difference has been based on the belief that such high standards were not required by the mining industry, they would slow down the development of the project and as a result increase the costs and extend the time period between start up and a positive cashflow.For civil works the construction of a tunnel is the project, for mining the construction of declines, crosscuts and drives are merely the means of accessing the orebody so that the real work can begin û MINING. Extraction of ore is the core business of most mining companies û it is what pays the bills.Though most mining companies have the equipment, the people, the knowledge and the ability to excavate tunnels, in the past mining companies did not appear to put the same energy into their tunnelling operations as they put into improving their ore extraction operations. In the past decade this appears to have changed, many mining companies now realise how important the correct excavation of a decline is to the success of the overall mining operation. They began to recognise that there were cost benefits to be gained in using the correct development techniques without overly sacrificing the benefits of speed and flexibility.This recognition also coincided with the growth of underground contractors whose predominant work was primary development (declines and ore access crosscuts and drives). The contractors again had the same knowledge, the same people, and similar equipment but their focus was different from that of the mining company û the contractors were focused on the development of the mine, the excavation of declines, crosscuts and drives. These deliverables were the contractorsÆ core business û itÆs what paid the bills.

Recent changes to environmental legislation and trends in the environmental regulation of mining in the Northern Territory are being driven by (among other factors) Federal Government policies and international agreements on the environment. These trends are discussed and the expected application of the NT Water Quality Management Strategy (based on the National Water Quality Objectives) over the next few years is examined with respect to mine environmental management practices. Some of the potential conflicts and changes in approach which may develop are identified and examples discussed. Proactive means of integrating trends in environmental legislation with mine planning and waste management are discussed.

Universities have had a long history in the education of geology graduates, Analysis of this history reveals a record of success, as judged on a world basis. However there have been significant changes in the last 20 years that have impacted on the ability of universities to continue to provide their traditional style of geology education. These changes have increased in the last 10 years. In the teaching side, there has been a change in expectations. Additionally the increasing workload decreases the value of each academic to perform the tasks needed by the new education. In the area of research, the funds provided have continued to decline, in both real and absolute terms, and it is now necessary for universities to seek out funds to pay for their postgraduate research. Additionally, the universities have slipped into the error of what cahn only be termed "academic incest", and research student mobility has decreased to an undesirable level, stifling initiative and new ideas in a number of cases, The only solution is for Government monies to be "directed" - ie that the postgraduate student must leave his or her original university in order to receifve the research stipend/scholarship. On the government front, the government and its agencies have not adequately analysed and recognised the need for the redirection of education and research funds into the needy areas of science and technology, especially those that related to the minerals area.
