Open pit mining commenced at Lihir Island in 1997 and is undertaken using a conventional drill, blast, load, haul methodology. Unique challenges at the operation include an active geothermal system, a well-developed advanced argillic blanket in the upper portions of the orebody and high rainfall. Grade control is effective utilising routine blast cone sampling. While this provides ‘just in time’ grade information for mill blending, there are opportunities to improve scheduling of mill feed, based on material classification of clay types and sulfur grades. The nature of the clay can impact on the handling properties while the sulfur grade is an important guide for autoclave blending, required for refractory gold. Drilling below the pit floor introduces hazards from the identified geothermal field. A trial Reverse Circulation (RC) program was implemented with the aim of defining four benches below the active mining bench. A comprehensive risk analysis, including the geothermal environment, was undertaken to design a drill collaring procedure with pressure diversion equipment. Operator exposure was minimised through ‘nil on foot’ principles with the driller located in an onboard cab, utilising remote rod handling. Sampling personnel operate in an elevated platform with access to protective covering. Samples from blastholes and the RC holes are processed at two site laboratories. One provides conventional Au fire assays with additional Infrared Combustion (Leco style) S analysis. The second laboratory collects material classification details from portable XRF (pXRF), near infra-red spectrometry (ASD) and Hardness Indicator Testing (HIT). An existing workflow was updated by the site to deal with the additional samples and ensure production ‘turn around times’ were retained for short-term planning. This required some changes to drying temperatures, compositing and screen sizing for the material classification. All results from the two laboratories are loaded into a centralised acQuire database for estimation into a single block model that informs the 13 week medium term planning (MTP) schedule. This paper describes some of the logistical issues faced when drilling in a geothermal area. It also discusses the selection and commissioning Quality Assurance of the sampling equipment and drill rig. Integration of the resulting assay data with existing resource models is also explained.

The Merlin Zone, a 2008 high-grade Mo-Re discovery, is a part of the Mount Dore Deposit in the Eastern Succession of the Mount Isa Inlier in Queensland, Australia. Hosted by carbonaceous metapelites and phyllites, the Merlin mineralisation comprises molybdenite veins, breccia infillings, stylolitic fracture fillings, and disseminations. Because rhenium is geochemically similar to molybdenum and commonly associated with it, global production of rhenium has been mostly a by-product of molybdenum refining. The high-grade rhenium in the Merlin Zone is an exciting discovery that is expected to become a direct source of rhenium. At the time of discovery, quality assurance (QA) procedures for rhenium were not in place at the Merlin Zone; therefore, they needed to be developed.The Merlin Zone was discovered using reverse circulation drilling, which led to concerns about molybdenite loss due to poor sample recovery. The twinning of the discovery hole with diamond core demonstrated a two-fold increase in molybdenum grade over several tens of metres. Consequently, the resources of the Merlin Zone were defined using assays from diamond drill core.Early analytical work, which was initially done only for molybdenum, comprised geochemical analysis with an aqua regia digestion, which have poor precision and can be biased low. Although initial testing for rhenium used similar procedures to those for molybdenum, a scarcity of commercial rhenium reference materials led to a validation process using neutron activation analyses and different digestions. This resulted in introduction of four-acid digestion assays, development of matrix-matched reference materials, and improvements to the quality of molybdenum and rhenium assays for reporting resources. Coarse and pulp duplicates were used to check for sampling bias and to ensure that levels of precision were adequate for the style of mineralisation and analytical methods. In addition, the direct and consistent geochemical correlation between molybdenum and rhenium provided another method for checking analyses.

Stratigraphic correlations across the Mur- phy Tectonic Ridge are crucial to regional corr. elations between the Mount Isa and McArthur River areas. Recent work in the Westmoreland and surrounding areas has substantiated the earlier general correlations between the Mount Isa and McArthur River sequences. The Mount Isa and McArthur Groups, and their equivalents, remain prime prospecting targets for major lead-zinc deposits of the Mount Isa and R.Y.C. type. A prospective area for Redbank-type copper mineralization is suggested.

The C.S.A. concentrator of Cobar Mines Proprietary Limited was expanded in 1974 to treat 80 000 tonnes of copper-lead-zinc ore per four week period. Jaw crusher product is fed to two par- allel primary autogenous mills followed by a secondary ball mill. Each mill operates in closed circuit with cyclones. Improved control of grinding rate and product sizing has been obtained from this circuit compared with the system of two parallel single stage autogenous mills. The direct smelting of zinc sulfide con- centrates has been investigated by an extensive series of computer-based thermodynamic equili- brium calculations. The study covers both pure 7.n-S-O-C-N systems and practical concentrate- coal-air-flux systems. It is shown that for a zinc concentrate containing iron and lead sul- tide impurities, a 97% yield of zinc vapour with autogenous operation can be obtained under carefully optimized conditions. The possible integration of this process with existing zinc condensation and recovery processes is Discussed.

The paper describes the development leading to the bucket wheel excavator systems now used in the Latrobe Valley and refers in particular to the new S.E.C.V. dredgers Nos. 14 and 15 which will be employed in the Loy Yang open cut. The design concept and operating possibilities of these dredgers are described in detail with reference to the machine characteristics designed for the operating conditions in the Latrobe Valley. The design is compared with units of similar capacity in open cuts of other countries.

Reconciliation involves the collection of tonnage, grade (quality) and contained metal (product) data from disparate and hopefully independent sources. Examples are exploration data, production sampling data from blastholes or drawpoints, and process plant data. These data may be compared by means of ratios (factors). The F1 factor usually relates short-term (ore control) model tonnages, grades and metal content to ore reserves depleted. The F2 factor usually relates received-at-mill tonnages, grades and metal content to delivered-to-mill = production tonnages, grade and metal content. The F3 factor is F1 × F2 and enables a comparison of a mineÆs ability to recover the tonnage, grade and metal content estimated in ore reserves. The F1 factor measures the accuracy of orebody knowledge in the ore reserves to the demarcation of ore and waste by ore control (short-term model). The F1 factor may be used to check and calibrate the selectivity of mineral resource models and/or planned dilution assumed in transfer from mineral resources to ore reserves. The F2 factor enables a check on unplanned dilution entering the ore stream between ore control and the mill. Using the factors it is possible to calculate a monetary value on improvements in the accuracy of orebody knowledge, selectivity and the effects of dilution and ore loss. Reconciliation should be an implicit part of the mining process, and reconciliation targets should be a key performance indicator for well-run mines.

The variation of austenitic grain size with temperature for the steels XKSlSO and XK9261 was determined using the vacuum ctching technique.It is shown that the effect of temperature on the mean grain intercept is relatively small, up to approximately 950°C. Above this temperature the rate of increase of grain size rises sharply.Within the limits of the 1-4 hr vacuum etching times used the effect of time at temperature is relatively small on the ASTM grain size of the steels.

Initial glory holing was followed by sublevel stoping, with a small proportion of total production mined by shrink and cut-and-fill methods.The sublevel stoping method was successfully modified to cater for altering ground conditions encountered at increasing depths. At present, 94 per cent of production comes from sublevel stopes. The evolution of this mining method and current techniques and practices is outlined. A combined shrink and,sublevel benching method was also developed to increase the mining rate of narrow orebodies over the standard stoping lift of 380 ft. Pillar recovery and stope filling operations have been continuously modified to suit the relIuirements of a rapidly developing mine.INTRODUCTIONOre production commenced at Mount Isa Mines in June 1931. Since then production has increased from approximately 2,500 tons of lead ores per mine day to the current 11,000 tons of sulphide ores per mine day comprising 3,100 tons of lead ore and 7,900 tons of copper ore. The West Coast of South Africa is well known for its placer gem quality diamond deposits and also associated with these hosts of Cenozoic unconsolidated marine and aeolian sand and gravel are significant concentrations of heavy minerals. Exploration for economic concentrations of zircon, ilmenite and rutile along the coast started in the mid-1980s. This resulted in the discovery of an inferred 1.6 billion tonne resource with a grade of ten per cent total heavy minerals (THM), which developed into the Namakwa Sands Mine, a world-class producer of heavy minerals. Several other resources, including satellite deposits proximal and distal to the mine area, extensive diamond mine dumps and present day beach placers, demonstrate the vast heavy mineral potential along the West Coast. The favourable gangue to economic mineral ratio, a higher zircon content compared to other similar deposits, relatively lower U+TH content of zircon, low slimes content and effectively pristine low chromium-manganese ilmenite of these deposits, render them attractive exploration targets. Negative factors that will affect conventional mineral beneficiation and liberation include secondary mineral coatings and the regional coastal development of several layers of superimposed duricrust. The economically attractive heavy mineral assemblage along the West Coast is the result of erosion of the proximal, gneissic Namaqualand Metamorphic Province and mature Table Mountain Group sandstone, concentration by marine and aeolian processes and preservation under arid climatological conditions over a period of more than 100 Ma.

The inferred ground conditions for the proposed mined cross passages at the northern end of the Waterview Connection tunnels consist of an overburden of alluvial and residual soils, with mixed face geology of highly weathered to unweathered extremely weak rock. This paper describes three-dimensional (3D) finite difference analyses undertaken to evaluate the stability of the cross passage headings and to validate the proposed sequence of excavation. The analyses undertaken incorporated the influence of the construction of the mainline tunnels and the breakout opening in the segmental lining for construction of cross passages.The stability analyses were carried out using FLAC3D™, version 4.0 (by Itasca Consulting Group) by progressive reduction of shear strength parameters to obtain a failure condition and estimate a factor of safety. For each step of strength reduction, corresponding increments of displacements of several points on heading faces were monitored. The stability obtained from numerical analyses was compared with analytical solutions. Interpretation of results of drained analyses indicated instability of the upper 2 m of heading face within the highly weathered rock mass. Additional analyses were undertaken by including grouted fibreglass dowels to reinforce the heading face. The results of the additional analyses showed significant reduction in displacements and yielding of ground around the face. The proposed temporary support comprised face reinforcement using grouted fibreglass dowels in conjunction with canopy tubes and perimeter support of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete. The stability of the construction sequence, which was related to the specific requirement of the proposed excavation equipment, was validated.CITATION:Wansbone, M G and Bhargava, R, 2014. The Bendigo Goldfield is located in the state of Victoria, Australia, and is one of a number of fields that make up the Central Victorian Goldfield. Since 1993, Bendigo Mining NL has been carrying out an extensive re-evaluation of the goldfield and is currently well advanced in developing an underground mine. The sediment-hosted auriferous quartz reefs are structurally complex and closely associated with anticlinal axes and reverse faulting. The gold within the quartz reefs is characterised by both its coarse nature (100 up to >5000 ¦m) and its erratic distribution; as a result, the Bendigo Goldfield is classed as an extreme nugget effect system. This characteristic ensures that the Bendigo mineralisation is very challenging to sample and evaluate. In this case, diamond drilling is a good measure of structure and geological continuity, but a poor measure of grade and grade distribution. Drilling, combined with on-reef development, bulk sampling and detailed geological studies are required for resource evaluation. For grade control a balance has to be sought between sample representativness, cost, turn around time and practicality. Extreme nugget effect deposits like Bendigo, require the use of bulk samples in order to be representative. However, the cost and turn around time is significant. As a result, a micro-bulk sampling system has been introduced that attempts to overcome these problems by providing a fast, practical method that can define ore from waste. Bulk sampling and on-vein development are still necessary for resource and reserve estimation.

Single station group velocities of fundamental made Rayleigh waves over the period range 15-100 s are carguted for five provincial profiles of the West Pacific. Based on recordings of earthquakes around the West Pacific by the W~ (World Wide Standard Seismic Network) stations AFI (Afianalu), HNR (Honiara), WEL (Wellington), PAR (Raratonga) and RAB (Rabaul). The inversion of the derived dispersion curves for average shear velocity-depth structure of the crust, LID and LVL shows that (i) the over-all structure beneath the profile 'westernSamoa-Micronesia-Mariana' is in between that of regions 3 and 4 of Pacific Ocean (Yu and Mitchell, 1979), except that the velocity is slightly lower, (ii) the uppermost mantle beneath the 'Vitiaz Trench' profile between AFI and HNR is similar to that of region 2 of the Pacific - in other words, thin LID and thick LVL; (iii) the structure beneath the ' Ibnga-Keradec Ridge' profile has a thick crust with thick sediments, and LID-LVL velocity and thickness are similar to region 3 of the Pacific; (iv) beneath the profiles ' Tonga/ Kermadec Trench events-RAR station' the structure is intermediate between regions 3 and 4 of the Pacific Crean; (v) from decomposition of the 'Solomon-meriana' profile, the structure beneath the Cntong Java Plateau has a thick crust with thick sediments and the uppermost mantle is similar to that of region 3 of the Pacific clean.

In this paper, the use of topology preserving projections (Sammon maps) and neural networks are considered as a basis for the construction of multivariate statistical process control charts for a semi-autogenous grinding circuit on a gold plant. Comminution circuits are often operated in a quasi-steady state mode, where the mills tend to move rapidly from one state to another. This makes them difficult to monitor by conventional means designed for continuous steady state processes. As a first step, process data reflecting normal operating conditions are mapped with SammonÆs algorithm. Only one feature is extracted at a time and each mapping is captured by a neural network model to allow online application. Reverse neural network models are used to reconstruct the data prior to the extraction of subsequent features from the data residuals. The ensemble of neural network models can then be used for both fault detection and identification. The approach compared favourable with both linear and non-linear principal component models. It was able to detect two simulated fault conditions both with a reliability of 100 per cent, as opposed to 57.8 per cent and 95.2 per cent detected by an approach based on the use of linear principal component analysis and 84.1 per cent and 98.0 per cent detected by an approach based on non-linear principal components extracted with auto-associative neural networks.

By the year 2000, China was the sixth largest gold producer in the world, with about one-quarter of total production being derived from refractory or semi-refractory deposits. Although bacterial oxidation plants had been previously tried in China using local technology, these plants had not been commercially successful. The Laizhou Gold Enterprise (Tarzan BioGold Co Ltd) located in Shandong Province, undertook to modernise their gold processing facility in 2000 with the introduction of Bacterial Oxidation (BACOX) Technology. In 1997 BacTech Australia and Mintek of South Africa had formed a technology partnership, combining forces in the provision of bioleach technology. Under a cooperation agreement, BacTech/Mintek were chosen as the preferred technology providers for this first application of commercially proven bacterial oxidation technology within China. The paper describes the successful operation of this plant over the last three years. The events of project implementation are described, from the metallurgical testing of concentrate; through to the commissioning at the design throughput of 100 tonnes per day resulting in 80 000 ounces (2.5 tonnes) per year of refined gold. Process aspects of the operation encountered over the last three years are discussed which illustrate the robustness of the operation. The success of the bioleach facility has led to an advancement of plans to double plant capacity and some of the innovations, which may be employed in this expansion phase, are discussed.

Understanding how ore interacts with flux particles at elevated temperatures to create molten slag is crucial since it governs the dynamics of a chemical reaction. This study explores the smelting behaviour of pre-reduced Nchwaning manganese ore when combined with lime, with the objective of examining the evolving interaction between pre-reduced ore particles and lime over time. The research sheds light on the interaction between solid and liquid and the phases that emerge during this process. To achieve this, a sessile drop furnace was employed to rapidly heat the materials positioned adjacent to each other on an alumina substrate and to observe the smelting process as it unfolded over time. This method allowed for the direct observation of the melting temperatures and the flux-ore reaction progression rate, and the potential disruptive events that might occur. By comparing the molten interfaces of the fluxed materials at various time intervals, this study provides insights into the relative rate of slag formation from the two materials. The results indicate that the main slag formation initiated at approximately 1400°C and continued to advance with time, with complete mixing occurring around 1500°C. The possible phases formed were identified using Scanning Electron Microscopy and modelled using Fact Sage thermodynamic software. In addition, the iron particles in the pre-reduced Mn ore were separated and settled from a rich MnO-containing slag. It was found that the separation of molten iron droplets from the slag depends on the rate of solid MnO particles dissolution into the adjacent slag phase.

Bauxite residue is one of the most important by-products from the alumina industry with no commercial use till now. The utilisation of bauxite residue through pelletising with different lime additions, hydrogen reduction, and smelting has been studied in this work. Three different types of green pellets were made with varying calcite-to-bauxite residue ratio and subsequently sintered at elevated temperatures. The sintered pellets were isothermally reduced at 1000°C under hydrogen gas followed by smelting of the reduced pellets in argon at 1500°C. Smelting of the reduced pellets leads to the recovery of metallic iron and the formation of a leachable calcium aluminate slag. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to characterise the phases and microstructural analysis. The iron produced in the smelting process has a high purity, above 99.5 wt per cent. While the iron content of the slags is quite low, and the slags shows variations of krotite (CaAl2O4), gehlenite (Ca2Al2SiO7), and perovskite (CaTiO3) phases based on the variation of calcite addition. It was found that the more calcite addition in pelletising yields higher percentage of krotite phase as compared to lower calcite-containing pellets. Employing quantitative XRD analysis, the krotite phase fraction was found approximately 85 wt per cent for higher calcite-added pellet, and around 74 wt per cent for lower calcite-added pellet. Christmas Island "C"-grade phosphate consists essentially of the minerals crandallite and millisite. Although containing over 25% P205, this material is not suitable for the manufacture of water-soluble phosphate fertilizers by conventional processes, because of its high iron and aluminium content Cover 25% total R203). In order to produce a water-soluble fertilizer from such material it is necessary to separate the iron and aluminium from the phosphate, which must report in a product acceptable as a fertilizer. Several processes were studied in detail. The first used ion exchange for dissolution and separation and yielded diammonium phosphate; processing costs were high compared with conven- tional processes based on apatite. The latter processes have basically simple flowsheets and cost of processing is low when compared with the costs of the raw materials. The need to separate iron and aluminium from the phosphate introduces additional complexity into the treatment of the C-grade material. The higher processing costs might be justified, however, if alumina could be produced as a byproduct. Two proposed processes have been developed in which: 1. hydrochloric acid is used for dissolution, and solvent extrac- tion for the separation of ferric chloride from phosphoric acid. Aluminium chloride is precipitated and hydrolysed to recover alumina and hydrochloric acid. 2. sulphuric acid is used for dissolution and aluminium is crystallized as ammonium alum. The phosphate is produced as an ammonium phosphate-sulphate fertilizer. High purity alumina can be obtained by treatment of the recrystallized alum. The technology of these processes is described, and their broad economics discussed briefly.\

Removal of gangue minerals from ilmenite concentrates can beaccomplished by relatively low temperature roasting in controlled gasatmospheres to selectively enhance the magnetic separationcharacteristics of the ilmenite. At roasting temperatures below 800¦C the magnetising reactions are often not consistent with phase equilibria considerations. Metastable phases can nucleate and control the roasting products. In weathered ilmenites the phase assemblages and microstructures in the altered ilmenite grains can influence the roasting reactions. In this paper we give an overview of the phase chemistry of chemically weathered ilmenites and of metastable phases formed by low temperature roasting. We also report the results of roast experiments conducted in a neutral gas atmosphere. Major increases in magnetic properties after short roasting times at low temperatures were obtained for a range of ilmenite concentrates. For example heating a secondary ilmenite concentrate from Western Australia for 15 minutes in nitrogen at 600¦C gave an increase in the three kilogauss magnetic fraction from three to 92 wt per cent. The solid state phase changes accompanying the inert atmosphereroasts were characterised by combining elemental analyses withquantitative phase analyses of the ilmenite concentrates and their roast products. It was found that the phase reaction that is principally responsible for the increase in the magnetic properties of weathered ilmenites involves a transformation of disordered ferrous-containing pseudorutile to an ordered ilmenite-hematite solid solution containing typically ten to 35 mole per cent of the hematite component. Examples are given of the application of the inert atmosphere roast to effect separations of ilmenite from gangue minerals.

"Flotation of nickel sulfide ores are generally constrained by nickel grade and impurity concentrations (notably magnesium and arsenic) in the product delivered to smelters. Being a physical separation process, flotation recoveries and grades are limited by the grade recovery curve of a particular operation, where increasing product grades are invariably associated with lower recoveries. Impurities put further pressure on this relationship, as removal of impurities from the final concentrate is almost always associated with nickel losses.Western Areas Ltd are developing a proposed expansion to its Cosmic Boy concentrator to treat an impurity stream, that is high in nickel and would otherwise report to tails. Through the use of BioHeap® technology Western Areas aims to recover the nickel and discard the arsenic to tailings. This expansion will consist of a biohydrometallurgical plant that leaches the nickel arsenic minerals, removing the arsenic as a stable iron/arsenic hydroxide, while recovering the nickel as a high-grade nickel sulfide product (at approximately 50 per cent nickel). This can then be blended with final concentrate to improve nickel grades and recoveries, while simultaneously reducing impurity levels or used to produce high value products like nickel sulfate.The introduction of a small microbial leach plant may be beneficial to base metal concentrators constrained by impurities or grade.Citation:Fewings, J, Seet, S, McCredden, T and Fitzmaurice, C, 2016.
