Every mine is situated within a water catchment – a catchment with potentially many other land uses. A mine may take up a relatively small area in that catchment, but its operations have the potential to affect the whole catchment and long after that mine has ceased to operate. Therefore, the residents of any given catchment have the right to feel secure in the knowledge that their catchment, and indeed the wider environment, will not be degraded by mining activities. Much conflict can arise when this confidence does not exist.But, imagine if a community not only felt confident that their catchment would not be degraded by mining activities, but was also confident that their catchment would be left in a better and continuously improving condition – with improving water quality, biodiversity and soil - and a strengthening, more resilient economy. Mining of copper ore is still the most important business in Chile. In order to mine ore with a copper content of less than one percent at Minera Los Pelambres in an economical way, opencast mining is mandatory. Due to the prevalence of avalanches at the mine, the concentrator was located in a stable area, some distance from the mine. As a consequence, the material has to be transported between mine and concentrator by conveyor. A downhill conveyor system has been implemented for more than ten years as the most suitable and most economical ore transport alternative. Due to the length (12.6 km) and inclination (1300 m drop) of the conveyor system, the stresses in the steel cord belt are the dominant design criterion, resulting in a belt quality of ST 7800. Additional dynamic belt stresses during transient operating conditions are avoided by the installation of high capacity adjustable frequency drives. The rating of a single drive unit is 2500 kW. During ten years of operation, several capacity increases have been implemented, from an initial 5800 t/h up to the current capacity of 9900 t/h. This presentation describes the engineering challenges of the implementation of the world's strongest belt conveyor system. Capacity increase measures like the development of new control and breaking strategy, proved by dynamic simulation of belt forces and belt speed scenarios are explained. During this long-term partnership of RWE Power International, the former Rheinbraun Engineering, with Minera Los Pelambres, RWE has been engaged continuously for development work, safety checks, expert opinions and maintenance audits, and giving new impulse to conveyor technology.

The Norman B Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering, or the Department of Mining Engineering (the Department), at CanadaÆs University of British Columbia (UBC) is addressing the integration of sustainable development concepts into mining education and research on behalf of industry and society. Over the past decade, the DepartmentÆs education and research model has been evolving to incorporate collaborative and multidisciplinary strategies, where sustainability initiatives are taught in classes, supported in research and discussed in a voluntary collective of mostly graduate students û the Sustainability Working Group (SWG). The SWG has brought together a diverse array of disciplines from academia, industry, government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and mining communities. The operational mechanisms and structure of the SWG have enabled momentum to be gained through several multidisciplinary educational and research networking initiatives. It acts to attract new students with diverse backgrounds, foster innovative research, develop relationships and networks, and create the space to discuss progressive ideas and projects. The original cohort of SWG graduate students laid the foundation for sustainable research initiatives within the Department at UBC. Novel research has incorporated topics such as: community resilience, artisanal small-scale mining, sustainability indicators and corporate social responsibility, environmental assessment and impact benefit agreements and the recycling of waste. Propelled by the support of the Department and inspired by the works completed, a host of new graduate students have embarked on their research quests to integrate sustainability principles into their projects. Such projects include: social impacts and benefits of mining, artisanal small-scale mining, community health, the production and transport of mine pollutants, mine waste management, mineral process plant design and the evolution of community education and mine policy. This paper reports on the departmentÆs continuing research and development towards an understanding and evaluations of the ongoing contributions of mining to sustainable development.

Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) prevention remains a priority focus within high-risk industries sector. A major mining operation sought to strengthen their approach to the management of high-risk activities through an in-depth review of all historical incidents that had serious injury or fatality potential (SIFp) events (sometimes known as hi-potential events). The analysis found that the organisation invested a disproportionate level of resources, time and effort on low consequence incidents with a high proportion of SIFp incidents going under the radar. It was found that 76 per cent of SIFp incidents were rated in moderate or lower risk categories and conversely, almost half of those incidents with a ‘serious risk’ rating had little or no potential for a serious outcome. As a result of this project, the operation engaged in a renewed focus on critical risk management and enhanced its operating cadence in critical risk for the workforce. This included bow tie analysis, an update to critical risk standards and increased workforce engagement in the use of critical control verifications in the field. Data analytics with lead and lag indicators continue to provide senior leadership team and risk owners with an understanding of exposure for SIFp and control effectiveness. The audience will take away learnings from a real-world case study that provides data-driven insights of the human, local and organisational factors contributing to incidents with SIF potential. In addition, participants will understand the steps taken to categorise and analyse this incident data and the initiatives currently being implemented by the organisation as a result.

BHP Billiton’s Area C iron ore operation has been in production since 2003. During 2010, below water table mining in the Marra Mamba formation commenced and dewatered ore has been successfully processed through the plant.The ability to mine below water table material increases reserves. Pits can be dewatered using a combination of ex-pit and in-pit bores. Critically it is important to allow suffi cient lead time to dewater. For Area C, in-pit bores yield the most water which presents challenges in every day operations when mining around bores. Operationally there are steep learning curves in obtaining equipment, training personnel and setting up infrastructure. Core risks include lifting, refuelling and maintaining gensets. The pipework, extraction and re-establishment work can be very manual.The challenges include blasting, mining, stockpiling, processing, water balance and disposal. Maximising up time on bores whilst minimising impacts to blast practices have evolved. Blast practices now align bores to the edge of patterns. Protecting bores have evolved from stemming bores with rock and re-drilling to using gas bags which require no drills. Based on moisture and material properties, mining of dewatered material can be categorised into three groups:1. normal,2. sheeting, and3. sheeting and top loading.Ore can go straight to the plant ore to drying pads where it takes between one and three months to drain.Stock management of these piles is important to ensure efficiency of the plant. Rules have been established for blending wet material to maintain feed capacity and some modifications to plants have been made. Dewatering of pits poses a challenge for water use. Initially turkey’s nests were established to capture water and use for dust suppression. As water abstraction has increased methods of management include using exhausted pits for storage and evaporators. Managed Aquifer recharge and use in potable water are being considered. An over arching coordination of the capacity and use are required.Important elements in dewatering include:• capacity models,• capital,• long to short planning,• day to day coordination, and • water level monitoring and balances. A central aim of rehabilitation is to ensure that disturbed land is returned to a post-mine condition that is safe, stable and self-sustaining. This paper describes initial results from a grazing trial at the New Acland open-cut coal mine in southern Queensland (-27.27 lat, 151.72 long) that aims to assess the sustainability and viability of cattle production from rehabilitated mined land compared to production from surrounding unmined lands (Newsome 2014). The grazing trial was established in 2013 by the Acland Pastoral Company, a subsidiary of New Hope Coal, on lands previously used for dairying, beef and crops before open cut coal mining of the Walloon coal measures began in 2002. The area has a mean annual rainfall of 640 mm. Economic conditions dictated the lead time from concept to commissioning of the Kambalda C.I.P. Plant. The high gold price prevailing at the time the Victory ore-body was discovered provided the impetus to establish a treatment plant with the utmost haste. Consequently only limited metallurgical testing was possible. Fortunately the Kambalda Metallurgical Department had experienced gold metallurgists among its' staff. This enabled a rapid assessment to be made of the ore types to be treated. Flexibility was the keynote in the plant design. Overseas practice and experience was drawn upon extensively, but it was known that problems uniquE to the Kambalda Plant would be encountered due to the high nickel content of the C.I.P. Plant feed and the difficult clays in some of the areas. These fears were well founded and problems have been experienced. However the plant design has enabled these problems to be absorbed, if not overcome, and design production rates were achieved and maintained within three month; of start-up.

An examination has been made of the rate and extent of removal of carbon from scrap metal charges when the melt is exposed to atmospheres which are reducing or oxidising with respect to FeO at unit activity. The mechanisms of decarburisation of molten Fe-C-S- P-Mn-Si alloys with H2/CO/H20/C02 gas mixtures with controlled compositions at high or low concentrations of carbon in the melt in the presence and in the absence of sponge iron, in both slag free melts and in the presence of various slag forming additives are discussed. A significant quantity of carbon can be removed from the metal during the melting stage and under optimum conditions, a high percentage of metal recovery and low carbon can be obtained after exposure of melt to the above gas mixture with controlled compositions. The presence of ferrous oxide provided by poorly reduced ore in the charge and the use of controlled atmospheres facilitated the removal of carbon to very low level during the melting period.

The thickener overflow of zinc concentrate, obtained from flotation process in the Angouran plant located in Iran, contains a large quantity of slimes which were transferred to the tailing ponds. These slimes have caused problems of storing and environmental aspects in the Angouran area. The objective of this research is to describe the extraction of zinc from these slimes by leaching method using sulfuric acid in pilot plant scale.Chemical analyses showed that these tailing materials contain 35 per cent of zinc. By XRD analysis, smithsonite is identified as the major constituent. Calcite, dolomite, and cerussite are found as carbonate minerals. A minimal amount of Zn occurs as hemimorphite. Quartz, kaolinite, clinochlore and muscovite are other silicate minerals in the slimes.In the optimal conditions, ie acid leach at pH of 1, temperature of 55¦C, reaction time of 120 minutes and solid-liquid ratio of 1:3 and neutralisation with Ca(OH)2 at pH = 4.5, temperature = 70¦C, time = 90 minutes, the total recovery of zinc obtained was 95 per cent.

The genesis of giant hematite ore deposits in northwest Australia remains a contentious topic in part because key evidence supporting a unifying genetic model has not been found at all deposits. In particular, several papers have proposed that carbonate replacement of silica layers in banded iron formation (BIF) by basinal brines is a requisite first step toward ore formation. This initial hypogene stage is inferred primarily from the presence of silica-poor, carbonate-rich rocks found below ore and along normal faults at the Mount Tom Price and Giles Mini deposits. However, until recently such rocks have not been identified at the largest martite-microplaty hematite deposit, Mount Whaleback. In this study, samples of the upper Mount McRae Shale are examined for their chemistry, mineralogy and petrography. These samples were collected from several key locations, including within drill core that penetrates an area immediately beneath ore along the Mount Whaleback fault at Mount Whaleback. Compared to unaltered black shale from Wittenoom Gorge in the north and altered black and red shale at Mount Whaleback, reddish-green shale below the Mount Whaleback deposit is significantly enriched in MgO and CaO and depleted in SiO2. Samples of this shale consist predominantly of fine- to medium-grained dolomite and ankerite cut by chlorite and carbonate veins, contrasting with unaltered equivalents that contain mostly stilpnomelane, K-feldspar and relatively minor carbonates. This alteration is distinct from assemblages developed during regional metamorphism, and possibly represents hydrothermal alteration after metamorphism. Although several questions remain unanswered, these results support models that invoke an early hypogene stage during the formation of the martite-microplaty hematite deposits in the Hamersley Province.

A group of stratabound-stratiform Fe-Ba-Zn-Pb-Ag deposits within the La Minita mining district of Michoacan, southwest Mexico have been investigated. The results of the study show that these deposits were generated around submarine hot-springs issuing in a Cretaceous island-arc environment. The exhalative mineralization, which is both epigenetic and syngenetic in character, was developed above fault-systems which constituted the loci of both volcanism and subsequent hydrothermal systems.Fluid inclusion data suggest two hydrothermal events during ore mineralization, one at 240¦C and the other at 161 to 205¦C, with salinities between 2.1 and 12.8 wt.% NaCl equivalent. Stable isotope data support a marine origin for the ore-fluids, as well as, for carbon and sulfur. Strontium isotope data suggest that Sr in the barites was extracted from the volcanics and limestones by circulating seawater. The ore-depositional environment was one of shallow, sub-tropical marine character, where mineralization was in part geochemically controlled by carbonate reefal facies within the volcanic/pyroclastic suite.

Thiourea is an alternative reagent for cyanide in gold leaching. The recovery of gold from acidic thiourea solutions by adsorption on activated carbon is based on methods similar to those applied for the extracting of gold from cyanide solutions, but the mechanism involved in the process is not completely understood. In the present work, studies were carried out to evaluate the adsorption of gold onto activated carbon. Experimental data showed good agreement with both the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. The adsorption of gold from acidic thiourea solutions proved to be an endothermic process, while the adsorption from cyanide is known to be exothermic. The isosteric heat of adsorption of -11.3 kcal/mol in the early stages of the adsorption is an indication of a process involving chemisorption. The effect of temperature was studied between 15¦C and 55¦C. An activation energy of 3.5 kcal/mol was determined by the Arrhenius plot, which indicates that the controlling step in the kinetics of adsorption is the diffusion onto the porous structure of the activated carbon.

E Deposit is located at BHP BillitonÆs Area C iron ore operations in the central region of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia. It is hosted by the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, the lowermost unit of the Archaean to Lower Proterozoic Hamersley Group. Mineralisation at E Deposit East is contained within the Mount Newman Member of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation and extends into the lower West Angela Member of the overlying Wittenoom Formation. Use of a combination of geological and geophysical techniques has enabled the geological setting of the deposit to be qualified. Interpretation of detailed mine face mapping, downhole geophysics, geochemistry, geological logging and photography has identified D2- related thrust faulting, with substantial south-over-north displacement. Similarly, in-pit mapping at the nearby C Deposit has revealed intense localised D2 deformation, including overturning and thrust faulting. The interpreted structure illustrates that iron ore deposits in the central Hamersley Province can be intensely deformed and require detailed geological investigation utilising technical data from mapping and drilling to enable the creation of robust grade-models for the mining operation.

"Screw press technology is an innovative approach to tackling the growing pressure to conserve water and minimise the environmental impact of mineral tailings disposal. The principles of the technology have been known for a considerable period of time in non-mining applications such as water treatment, wastewater (municipal sludge), as well as in the paper and chemical industries for dewatering solids, particularly those containing clays.The screw press represents a viable niche technology for filtering fine and high-clay tailings, without the prior thickening stage, and is capable of producing a filtered product that is sufficiently consolidated and dry enough to provide a product suitable for conveying and dry stacking.The Ishigaki screw press was introduced in 1990 and key features are: continuous operation and excellent availability low wear to plant acceptable flocculant consumption low carbon footprint and low noise levels fully automatic.These features lead to simpler plant layouts, easier maintenance, smaller spares inventories, reduced wear, smaller footprint and overall lower capital and operating costs.The amenability of a particular tailing stream to treatment by screw press technology may be determined by test work. Two pilot plant studies are described where this technology has been applied in the mineral industry being flotation tailings from a rare earth (RE) mineral concentrator and coal tailings. The philosophical context of many activities in mine geology can be an important lever in adding value to operations. For mine geologists (including resource and grade control geologists) we argue that the tasks of problem formulation, observation and data collection, interpretation and modelling invoke various philosophical considerations whether the practitioner is aware of them or not.Constructing testable models to explain reality is the definitive aspect of any activity claiming to be ‘scientific’. A primary goal of mining geology is to build models that accurately predict reality to an acceptable degree and these include litho-structural, stratigraphic, grade control, resource or reconciliation models. What’s more, in mine geology we are often able collect additional drill samples or access new underground openings, for example, that can provide relatively rapid feedback on how predictive, and therefore useful, our models are. In this paper, we describe the key philosophical frameworks proposed for conducting scientific investigations, including falsification, the method of multiple working hypotheses and structural concepts of scientific theory. The strengths and weaknesses of these approaches are discussed and an attempt is made to relate them to activities undertaken by mine geologists. Common perceptions of what constitutes the scientific method have been dominated by how scientists do experimental physics and chemistry in particular. There are very important differences in the types of problem confronted in these experimental sciences compared to the ‘historical sciences’, such as geology, where the processes studied are unique and only evidential traces of past events are available. The philosophical implications of attempting to validate numerical geological models, such as resource estimates are also briefly considered.Some practical conclusions are drawn about how mine geology activities can be better implemented if practitioners are cognisant of the importance of philosophical considerations when attempting to gain new knowledge through a scientific investigation. We believe that the implications for creating additional value to a project or operation can be very significant when geology is applied by a practitioner with an understanding of the philosophical basis of the activities we think of as constituting a scientific investigation.Remember that all models are wrong; the practical question is how wrong do they have to be to not be useful? (Box and Draper, 1987, 74 p).The demand that theories be highly falsifiable has the attractive consequence that theories should be clearly stated and precise. If a theory is so vaguely stated that it is not exactly clear what it is claiming, then when tested by observation or experiment it can always be interpreted so as to be consistent with the results of the test. The constraints in university courses are lack of hours, high cost of scientific equipment, and poor availability of suitably experienced staff. These have forced the balance away from practical work and towards more theory. Labelling of individuals as either practical, or academic, does not help the inter- change of staff between industry and univer- sities that is necessary to balance idealism and realism. Practical men who do return to universities may lose seniority and find that industry is reluctant to have them back. Academics who specialise too long may concentrate on their research to the exclusion of basic material. It is difficult to operate pilot scale plants in universities because of lack of time, and obsolescent equipment. Small grants from industry might enable tests to be run in research laboratories such as at C.S.I.R.O.. Within universities there may be a need for greater interchange of students among depart- ments, aided by the absence of weighted student unit measurements, as suggested by Aus.I.M.M. and A.M.I.C.

Failures within hard rock underground excavations have historically been defined by a depth of failure, estimated in the field or through individual measurements, with a simplified failure geometry; such as 1/3 span, cubic or paraboloid. This simplified shape, volume and mass of failure is typically used to estimate in situ demand as a simplified discrete point. However, the highly variable failure geometry indicates simplified methods to estimate the mass can be erroneous in comparison to high precision LiDAR scans. Advances in technology have enabled the accurate capture of failure geometry and allow a far more accurate analysis of failures to be completed. This case study investigates a number of real-life failures to accurately define the failure geometry, the distribution of the failure parameters and compares this to traditional methodologies. This paper also outlines a suggested means of standardising failure geometry parameters whilst accounting for their variability.

The Pic de Fon iron oxide deposit is a potential major new source of iron ore, located at the southern end of the Simandou range in eastern Guinea on the West African Craton. The deposit is hosted by banded iron formations (BIFs) within a supracrustal sequence, which lies unconformably upon a crystalline basement. The host BIFs and shales have been metamorphosed up to staurolite-grade itabirite and phyllite respectively. Stratigraphic relationships are obscured by polyphase deformation, although the sequence appears to comprise a lower phyllite(-minor quartzite) unit and transitional phyllite-iron formation overlain by three itabirite units. It is the itabirite units, selectively enriched to iron grades in excess of 65 per cent Fe (with low deleterious elements), that constitute the Pic de Fon deposit. Samples acquired from exploration diamond drill holes and outcrop across the deposit have been collected to investigate the Pic de Fon lithologies and iron-rich material types. Initial research techniques have included geological mapping, reflected light microscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD) studies and ICP-AES geochemistry. The aim is to develop a model for deposit genesis that may assist future exploration and deposit exploitation planning. Results to date have identified a variety of hematite textures, which include recrystallised trellis, interlobate and granoblastic hematite after magnetite. In addition, fine-grained bladed to acicular microplaty hematite appears to both replace itabirite banding and infill porosity. Field relationships indicate a structural control of microplaty hematite development. Geochemistry and XRD results suggest a loss of silica with negligible iron addition during the conversion of itabirite to ore grade mineralisation. The enrichment process(es) is also accompanied by a gradual increase in K, Mg, Na, (Ca and Al).

This paper presents an overview of the strategy adopted to bring the Ballymoney opencut lignite deposit to an advanced stage of mine design and confidence. Certain aspects of the project differentiate it from the normal Australian experience. These include the thick overlying glacial drift, the proximity to established infrastructure and the wide fluctua- tions in annual lignite demand. The incorporation of these factors in the mine plan are discussed. The deposit area is located near the town of Ballymoney, in Northern Ireland. In July 1986, after winning an internationally competitive tender, Meekatharra Minerals Ltd commenced an exploration programme designed to delineate reserves to supply a 450 MW power station. In less than eighteen months, a complete evaluation was undertaken and a price submitted in December 1987 to the relevant authorities for the supply of lignite. Subsequently, UK government consultants and significant inter- national banks have endorsed the findings. The mining study commenced with the evaluation of various develop- ment strategies, followed by selection of the most viable mining method and equipment. The equipment selected will mine four million tonnes of lignite and eleven million cubic metres of waste each year. In year 15, the waste removal requirement increases to almost seventeen million cubic metres. This results in an average strip ratio over the mine life of three cubic metres of waste per tonne of lignite. The quality of the product delivered to the run of mine conveyor transfer point, based on maximum resource recovery, will include heat content of 8813 kJ/kg (3789 Btu/Ib), ash content of 28% and moisture content of 40%.
