Black coals occur in most of the major sedimentary basins in Australia. In addition to the better known Permian coal occurrences of the Sydney, Bowen, Oaklands and Galilee Basins, coals of Permian age occur in the Arckaringa Basin in South Australia, the Bonaparte Basin in Northern Territory and the Collie, Perth and Canning Basins in Western Australia and the Tasmania Basin in Tasmania. Coals of Triassic age occur in the Ipswich Callide and Tarong Basins in Queensland, the Tasmania Basin in Tasmania and the Leigh Creek area in South Aus- tralia. Coal bearing rocks of Jurassic age occur in the Mulgildie Basin and Maryborough Basins in Queensland and in both the Queensland and New South Wales portions of the Clarence Moreton Basin and Surat Basins. They also occur in the Perth Basin in Western Australia. Rocks of Cretaceous age known to contain coal occur in the Styx, Maryborough and Laura Basins in Queensland, the Gippsland Basin in Victoria and both the Queensland and New South Wales portions of the Surat Basin. The coal measures have been deposited in a variety of sedimentary environments and the coals vary widely with regard to thickness, extent, banding characteristics, maceral and ash content. However, they are generally of low rank and most are suitable only for steaming.

Fine grinding in an air-swept ball mill working in closed circuit with a forced vortex air classifier has been investigated first in continuous laboratory and then in industrial scale. Results from the laboratory circuit have shown significant influence of mill load (powder filling) on the capacity of the circuit. In laboratory scale the mill load was measured and controlled by a weighing platform placed under the complete mill set-up. The mill load of the industrial air-swept ball mill has till now been controlled by measuring the power consumption of the mill motor. Thus, it was necessary to operate far from the range of optimal mill filling. To improve the circuit performance, alternative ways of mill load measurement were investigated. An important factor was investment cost, as many fine grinding mills operate in relatively small circuits that do not wan-ant large investment. In this case the task was accomplished by using a piezoelectric strain transducer, which detected strain changes in the mill shell. It was installed in the midpoint of the shell, where the highest deformation was obtained. As the transducer was on the top position, it indicated compression, and on the bottom position it measured tension. By taking the difference between the readings, it was possible to calculate total strain variations, directly proportional to the mill load. The signal from the transducer was sent to a control room via a cordless infrared communication system, employing a microprocessor control card, which could further regulate other operating parameters of the circuit according to the software model. The installation required very low investment cost and provided simplicity of application as well as stability and reliability of characteristics under severe industrial condition. The measurement system made it possible to optimise the mill load and thus increase the production from 3.2 to 3.7 dh (15 per cent), and stabilise the circuit operation.

In response to the increase in consumption of galvanised steel for automobiles in the last decade and the problems associated with remelting larger quantities of galvanised steel scrap, a process is being developed to separate and recover the steel and zinc from galvanised ferrous scrap. The zinc is dissolved from the scrap in hot caustic using anodic assistance and is recovered electrolytically as dendritic powder. The dezinced ferrous scrap is rinsed and used directly. The process is effective for zinc, lead, and aluminum removal on loose and baled scrap and on all types of galvanised steel. The process has been pilot tested for batch treatment of 900 tonnes of mostly baled scrap. A pilot plant to treat continuously loose scrap, with a design capacity of 48 000 tonnes annually, has been in operation in East Chicago, Indiana since early in 1993. The first 450 t of scrap degalvanised in the pilot plant have residual zinc below 0.01 per cent and sodium dragout below 0.01 per cent. Use of degalvanised steel scrap decreases raw materials, environmental compliance costs, and opportunity costs to steel- and iron-makers. Availability of clean degalvanised scrap may enable integrated steel producers to recycle furnace dusts to the sinter plant and EAF shops to produce flat products without the use of high quality scrap alternatives such as DRI, pig iron, or iron carbide. Recycling the components of galvanised steel scrap saves primary energy, decreases zinc imports, and adds value to the scrap. The quantities of zinc available by the year 2000 from prompt and obsolete automotive scrap will approach 25 per cent of zinc consumed in the major automotive production centres of the world. Zinc recycling from galvanised steel scrap, either before or after scrap melting, will have to be Implemented.

King Island Scheelite had been using dealer modified front end loaders for two years when in 1974 it started to increase production. Suppliers were then quoting long deliveries for underground diesel trackless mining equip- ment, and the Company was forced to modify surface machines which had become redundant as production from the open cut phased out. The results were generally successful and encouraged further adaptations. Drill jumbos excepted, the Company now uses only converted surface machines in areas worked by diesel engined equipment and for all support and auxiliary functions.

Coal washability data can be used for assessing coal quality. However, the techniques of using these data to solve quality problems differ from one mine to another and certain problems may never really be investigated due to limitations of the available techniques. One promising way to overcome these limitations is by correct application of geostatistics.A geostatistical study on coal washability data was undertaken based on a data set of closely spaced in-pit bore cores. These bore cores were analysed consistently over a relatively simple geological area. The average distance between the drill holes was about lOOm. There were 78 drill holes available for the area after deleting the erroneous bore cores. During the study, nine extra closely spaced drill holes were drilled within a single mining block.A procedure to construct two coal quality models, a kriging or cokriging model and a simulation model, was proposed. The modelling results for the data above are discussed and results of a mine scheduling exercise based on the models developed are included.

Legislation up to the early 1950s prevented the mechanical extraction of pillars. The mines operating at that time had formed extensive areas of pillars. When permission for the mechanical extraction was gazetted, conventional equipment was employed for pillar extraction and generally using hand mining systems. The mid-fifty's saw the of continuous miners. These machines eliminated the disadvantages of conventional equipment and the necessity for multiple working places. Some new layouts for panels emerged; however, actual extraction methods of pillars still followed closely that of hand mining. During the early sixty's the extraction of standing or new formed pillars was undertaken by the "open-end lift" or a "split and lift" method.

The LeadtZinc Concentrator at Mount lsa treats all the lead-zinc-silver ore from the Mount Isa Mine and some of the ore from the Hilton Mine. This concentrator was commissioned in June 1966 and total lead-zinc-silver ore treatment was transferred from the Mount rsa's original No 1 Concentrator in May 1967. Plant capacity is around 5 x 106 t/y.There have been three phases of major plant modifications since commissioning:1. replacement and upgrading of the flotation section in 1979; 2. upgrading of the crushing plant and installation of a heavy medium hydrocyclone plant in 1983 for ore preconcentration, and; 3. doubling ball milling capacity and a further upgrading of the flotation section in 1992.Other developments have included the installation of flotation columns and Jameson cells.The evolution of milling practice since 1955 has been reported by Davey and Slaughter (1970), Bartrum, Dobrowolski and Schache (1977), Fiedler and Munro (1984) and Espinosa-Gomez el al (1989).Lead concentrate is smelted in Mount Isa while zinc concentrate and bulk concentrate (locally called Low Grade Middlings or LGM) are railed to Townsville and shipped to custom electrolytic zinc plants and ISP smelters.

The rapid socio-economic growth of Hanoi City coincides with a corresponding growth of the transport demand. Today, the transport in Hanoi is completely dependent on private modes of transport. Because of the lack of an efficient public transport system and the expected rapid increase in traffic volumes, the movement of people and goods in the urban areas of Hanoi will cause congestion in the present city transport network. The solution of the construction of new roads, or the widening of the existing streets, is very expensive in urban areas and usually causes many social problems due to the resettlement of people. From the point of view of the number of inhabitants, Hanoi City is now over one million. Above this number the international experience shows that the public transportation must be a mass transport system with large capacity, commercial speed and also independent as much as possible from the street network. According to the Hanoi Master Plan for 2020, the Hanoi urban population will be over 3.5 million persons. Also, in the next 15 years, the distances between centre-destination points will be doubled by comparison to 1995.

Gold-quartz and antimony-gold-quartz veins in the Hodgkinson Province are hosted by subgreenschist to greenschist facies metasediments and show no spatial association with granitic rocks. They commonly parallel axial plane foliations or occur in brittle to brittle-ductile shear zones. Detailed mapping in the Hodgkinson goldfield indicates that vein systems are isolated in distinct structural and lithologic domains by post-mineralization faulting. Gold-quartz and antimony-gold-quartz veins have distinctive mesoscopic textures characteristic of the mesothermal vein environment. Some of the antimony-gold-quartz veins are located on domain boundaries which truncate the gold mineralization. In. some areas, tin and tungsten-tin mineralization which are spatially related to Late Palaeozoic granitoids appear to postdate the gold-quartz and antimony-gold-quartz mineralization.Oxygen and hydrogen isotopic studies of vein and alteration assemblages associated with these diverse ores provide constraints on fluid sources and have implications for the origin of mesothermal gold mineralization. The available isotopic data are consistent with a dominantly magmatic source for tin and tungsten-tin mineralization although there is evidence of a late-stage meteoric component in some tin-mineralizing systems. Gold mine production in South America was 247.3 tonnes in 1995 up from 156.4 tonnes ten years earlier in 1986. This represents a 58 per cent increase and amounted to 11 per cent of total world gold mine production. The major countries involved in order of production, were: Brazil (67.4 tonnes), Peru (51.5 tonnes),. Chile (48.5 tonnes), Colombia (24.1 tonnes), Venezuela (17.1 tonnes), Bolivia (16.0 tonnes), Ecuador (9.6 tonnes), Guyana (8.8 tonnes), French Guiana (3.3 tonnes) and Argentina (one tonne). The most dramatic increase was reported in Peru where production increased from 10.9 tonnes in 1986 to 51.5 tonnes in 1995, heavily influenced by the production from Minera Yanacocha which began operations in 1993 and produced 17.2 tonnes in 1995.With the reformation of the mining laws and the introduction of investment incentives in all the South American countries in recent years, dozens of major and junior mining companies began flocking into the area in the early-1990s to conduct exploration. A recent study undertaken in Brazil shows that an average of $240 million per year will be expended in this country during the period 1993 - 2010. Twenty-five per cent of this expenditure is expected to be made on gold exploration. Similar figures for Peru are $220 million total per year with 50 per cent for gold; $170 million per year in Argentina with 25 per cent for gold and $120 million ner year in Chile also with 25 Der cent for gold.

This paper discusses experimental results of physical scale models employed to study the stability of a pillar between rectangular roadways. A programme of laboratory investigations utilising a bi-axial test rig has been undertaken to examine the influence of various stressfields on the stability of pillars between mine roadways. The effect of pillar height/width ratio on the overall stability is studied. Observations of failure characteristics in and around pillars are discussed especially in relation to the various stressfields applied to the models.

In the traditional analysis of airblast and ground vibration, it is often assumed that only that single blasthole possessing the maximum charge weight (or a small group of blastholes initiating in an 8 ms time window) will determine the peak level of airblast or vibration. This assumption is examined in light of waveform superposition, and is found to be unsound. More rational alternatives are given in which all blastholes (or a selected number of blastholes) are assumed to contribute, in varying degrees, to the peak vibration or airblast. However, it is also shown that there is generally no precise solution for determining the number of blastholes that contribute to the peak level. The technique of waveform superposition does not rely on evaluating which group of holes produced the peak, and so is the preferred method for prediction. Some numerical and analytical models of wave superposition for airblast and vibration are also reviewed and recent approaches discussed. The directionality of airblast, in particular, is analysed in detail using a new superposition model that is constructed of two submodels, onenumerical, the other analytical. This model shows that the airblast from even a single blasthole can be highly directional. The detail of this model is commercially sensitive and will not be discussed. Only results and a broad discussion will be given.

Selection of mining methods, stope dimensions and stoping sequences is usually based on comparisons with other similar orebodies or rocktypes. Rock mechanics principles assist the process, which can be further improved by application of rock mechanics' models - in particular, computer based stress analysis techniques. These models vary in capabilities and potential application but, basically, can be subdivided into techniques which only model the surface of excavations, and those which model the total volume to be analysed. To address the wide range of geometries, stoping methods and sequences, and geomechanical environments at Mount Isa Mines, a number of models have been developed. By presenting examples of their actual and potential application it is demonstrated that appropriate use of these techniques will assist in the determination of mining parameters and improve ore recovery. Examples presented cover sequencing in tabular and massive orebodies, location of shafts and shaft pillars, and backfill and hanging-wall stability. It is concluded that surface techniques are more appropriate for regional analyses and volume techniques are more suited to analyses of detailed, local geometry. The 3-D regular block model used for long term mine planning at Hamersley Iron did not fulfil the requirements for short term mine planning in terms of accurate representation of geological structures, contacts and boundaries in the orebodies. A computer model, based on zone plans, is being created as a single orebody model for all phases of mine planning. The zone plan is the primary interface between the geologists and mining engineers. It is essentially a bench plan at mid-bench height showing geological structure, material type boundaries, the grade and physical characteristics of ore blocks. The method allows for the dilution of ore zones by waste material. The stratiform nature of the orebodies allows zones of varying grade to be readily delineated on the plans. The Zone Plan Model (ZPM) is the interface between geological and mine planning computer systems. It is the basis of all mine planning with applications including long and short term mine plans, reconciliations, general ore reserve estimations, pit design and general model enquiries. The system was designed to be user driven. The user has complete control at all times as all computer generated data are fed back to the user who may then elect to override the computer. Various controls were built into the system to ensure model validity and integrity. The system has proved to be invaluable as a tool for users with little or no computing experience.

Ulan Coal Mines Limited operates an underground and open cut mine near Mudgee in the Central West of NSW. The mines are part of a Joint Venture managed by Exxon Coal and Minerals Australia Limited (ECMAL). Currently all the mines output of over five million tonnes per annum is sold into the export market predominantly as a steaming product.

Tectonic subsidence plots have been calculated for well, extrapolated-well and significant off-well (seismically-based) locations in the Vulcan Sub-basin and adjacent highs (western Timor Sea). The subsidence curves have been normalized to a common datum, the distinctive "near top Permian" marker, and corrected for sediment compaction, palaeobathymetry, eustatic sea-level change and loading effects.Four principal phases of post-Permian basin development are recognised and quantitatively described by integrating the results of the sub-sidence analysis into the regional (e.g. recent Ocean Drilling Program-derived) framework of the tectonic evolution of the North West Shelf. They are1. the Triassic-mid Jurassic Westralian Superbasin intracratonic phase,2. the late Jurassic-early Cretaceous North West Shelf rift phase,3. the mid Cretaceous-Palaeogene North West Shelf subsidence phase, and4. the Neogene-present Timor collision phase. Rapid Triassic tectonic subsidence occurred in an intracratonic setting, possibly subsequent to aborted late Palaeozoic rifting. Intracratonic sub-sidence mechanisms such as deep crustal metamorphism and/or intrustion and regional tectonic compression are invoked in addition to any post-rift thermal subsidence which may have occurred.

The situation in which a gas stream flows through a bed of solids is found in many extractive metallurgy operations. Examples include blast furnace smelting, sintering and pellet firing. In such cases the resistance of the bed to fluid flow and heat transfer is of major significance to the operation of the process. This depends on the structure of the bed, which in turn is influenced by the manner in which the materials are charged to the bed. In this work, packed beds of hematite pellets of two different sizes were prepared in which the pellets were charged as a uniform mixture and in layers. The porosity, flow resistance and heat front velocity were measured and compared for the different bed configurations. For layered beds, the overall porosity and heat front velocity increased while the flow resistance decreased when compared with the values obtained for the uniform mixture. The size of the layers also had an effect on flow Properties.

In the upper coal surface in the Latrobe Valley, craters known locally as fireholes have developed due to prehistoric coal fires. They can be several hundred metres across and up to fifty metres deep, and are now filled with overburden materials varying from hard baked clays to very soft lacustrine clays. In addition to reducing coal reserves, continuous mining operations are seriously affected by fireholes. Large undulations in the upper coal surface result in a mixture of coal and overburden on the upper mining levels. The very soft lacustrine clays are unstable in the mine batters and the overburden dump, are difficult to handle on the bucket wheel excavator/conveyer system, and have insufficient bearing capacity for the large bucket wheel excavators. Early identification is essen- tial and both drilling and dynamic core penetrometer have been exten- sively used. However, this has not proved adequate in locating and defining the extent of all fireholes, due largely to their irregular shape. To overcome this a range of geophysical techniques has been trialled with very promising results. A trial area has been covered on a twenty metre grid using gravity and Geonics EM34 conductivity measurements and the same area has been covered at a closer spacing with high resolution magnetics. Image processing of contoured magnetic, EM34 conductivity and residual gravity data has resulted in very good correlation with drilling data.

As part of a large AMIRA project, an on-line moisture meter was installed at two mine sites in Central Queensland. This project investigated the factors which control the moisture content of coarse (>0.5 mm) coal from the centrifuges used in conventional coal preparation plants. It was placed immediately after the first centrifuge to isolate the factors pertaining to one machine and its feed.The meter was found to be accurate and precise when compared with manual and mechanical sampling methods. The Grubbs estimator technique indicated that its precision is better than 0.3 per cent at the 95 per cent confidence limit.It has been identified that:1. the variability of the measured moisture contents of coarse coal can be described by normal distributions. Standard deviations of about 0.6 per cent are common; and2. the treatment of the coarse coal on the drain and rinse screens immediately prior to the centrifuge can affect the final moisture content.
