An on-stream iron ore analyser has been developed in collaborationwith Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited for determining the iron content ofboth lump (- 30+ 6 mm particle size) and fines ( - 6 mm particle size)on conveyor belts. The analyser, which is called IRONSCAN, is basedon pair production, and is now commercially available from Mineral ControllnstrumentationLimited (MC!) in Adelaide. It can be mounted underexisting conveyor belts with minimal modifications to the conveyor structure,and the presence of steel cables in the belt does not interfere oncethe analyser has been correctly calibrated. The analyser has been extensivelytested on both lump and fines on the shiploading conveyor at Dampier,and typically the root mean square (Lm.s.) deviation between singleIRONSCAN measurements and conventional chemical analyses is betterthan 0.5070 Fe. It is currently being evaluated on - 150 mm ore from theprimary crusher at Mount Tom Price, and initial result are encouraging.The principal advantage of IRONSCAN is that it provides rapid informationon ore grades. But perhaps its greatest potential is at the primarycrusher where conventional sampling and analysis is very expensive toimplement.

Since early 1968 the Bureau of Mineral Resources (B.M.R.) has carried out VLF-EM test surveys in various parts of Australia and Papua. The aim of the work, primarily, was to examine the effect- iveness of the method as an exploration tool under a variety of Australian conditions. Selection of test areas was determined by the availability of geological, geophysical and drilling information and by the desirability to include a variety of physical variables such as depth of weathering and topography. The aim of the present account is to review the results of this work and to make an assessment of the method available to the mining industry. The author wishes to acknowledge considerable assistance both by way of data and discussion provided by Messrs. The theoretical and experimental studies have been done to clarify the hearth flow of iron and slag. The results of dissections show that the hearth can be treated as a packed bed of coke hav- ing good permeability with a coke-free layer at the bottom of the hearth. 3-dimensional numerical calculations of hearth flow with and without a coke-free layer are carried out, and the results are assured by a water model simulation. The influences of a coke-free layer on the iron flow and the discharge route of iron and slag are examined. The 3-dimensional flow pattern can be represented simply by the travelling time, which depends on characteristically the profile of coke-free layer and the quantity of iron in the hearth. Those flow parameters could be obtained by the results of radioisotope tracer test ( Co for iron flow, and Sc for slag flow) at several furnaces. As a result, it is found that the coke-free layer repeats the cycle of appearance and disappearance at several-month intervals. This cycle corres- ponds to large temperature fluctuation at the bottom of hearth. The relation between iron flow and skull (solidified iron, coke and deposited graphite mixed layer) on the hearth brick was studied by the model experiment and the thermal analysis based on the indications of thermocouples installed in the bottom of the hearth. If a thin coke-free layer is formed on the skull, a fast iron flow is generated in the layer, and melts away the skull. The growth and melting of skull produces the fluctuation of thermal load on a bottom brick, causing brick Damage.

As more than a few mines gradually sink under the weight of emails, whiteboards, notice boards and ever more complex spreadsheets, the holy grail of effective short-term interval planning and control in underground mines is as far away as ever. Despite the mining industry investing ever greater amounts in planning and Enterprise Resource Planning systems, short-term plans become ever more complex and rigid. What the industry desperately needs are not more ‘disembodied voices down the speaking tubes’, but flexible and effective planning systems that encourage people to make reasonable commitments to each other so that everyone can work as a coordinated team to complete the work required each shift.One solution to the challenge has emerged. This paper describes the ‘Fewzion’ shift planning and short interval control system which has been developed at Anglo American’s Moranbah North and Glencore’s Oaky Creek coalmines in Central Queensland. Fewzion has drawn on management theory embodied in Management Operating Systems, Lean and Theory of Constraints approaches to continuous improvement to play a key role in both mines achieving record breaking tonnages.In addition to explaining the Fewzion approach, a case study is presented describing how Anglo American’s Moranbah North improved production by 39 per cent in 2014/2015 and won ‘Coalmine of the Year’ two out of the last four years and how Glencore’s Oaky Creek sustainably improved monthly development meters by 34 per cent within two months of implementing Fewzion.CITATION:Moynagh, P and Britton, G, 2017. Comminution Kinetics equations are developed to take into account difference of grindability of mineral components. The equations describing both batch and closed circuit grinding or crushing processes are given. These equations are applied to industrial data to derive comminution kinetic and classification characteristics of the component minerals in a multi-mineral ore. Control strategy based on these concepts is presented.

The Hellyer deposit, hosted in the Cambrian Mt Read Volcanics, displays features typical of volcanogenic massive sulphide orebodies. These include a well developed stringer zone, metal zonation within the orebody, a polymict volcaniclastic sequence flanking the deposit and a hangingwall alteration plume in overlying basaltic pillow laves.Mapping and core logging is very detailed in order to extract as much data as possible from the deposit and its host rocks. A geological log suitable for direct computer input was adopted shortly after the deposit's discovery.

Complete Bouguer and isostatic anomaly maps compiled for Costa Rica provide new insights into the crustal structure and mineralization. Terrain corrections were approximated from the station to a radial distance of 167 km by computer using a 3- minute digital elevation model of Costa Rica and surrounding areas. Isostatic corrections, based on Airy-Heiskanen compensation, were also calculated from 0 to 167 km using the 3- minute elevation model and from 167 km to 180 degrees using combined topographic and isostatic reduction maps. Costa Rica can be divided into four main terranes based on gravity data: a Pacific coastal region, a Pacific inland area, a central region, and a Caribbean coastal region. Negative gravity anomalies along the Pacific coastal margin correlate with an offshore sedimentary basin, and large positive anomalies correlate with mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks on the Santa Elena, Nicoya, and Osa Peninsulas, and at Puerto Quepos. Pacific inland anomalies are separated from the Pacific coastal region by a steep gravity gradient, and over the Coast Ranges a major gravity low overlies a thick section of low- density sedimentary rocks. In the central region, a major gravity low occurs over a thick low-density Quaternary volcanic complex in the Cordillera Central, north of San Jose. A prominent feature of the Caribbean coastal region is an interrupted gravity low over the Limon Basin that reflects a thickening of low-density sedimentary rocks. A conspicuous gravity lineament, trending northeast separates northern and southern Costa Rica. The lineament is defined by the termination of several major gravity anomalies including those over the Coast Ranges, Cordillera Central, Puerto Quepos, and Limon Basin. In addition, the lineament correlates with other geological and geophysical data including: northeast-trending faults, the southern limit of large Quaternary volcanoes, the segmentation of the middle America volcanic belt, and a seismicity gap. This lineament may be the expression of a previously unrecognized major northeast- trending fracture zone in central Costa Rica. An important economic implication of the gravity lineament is a correlation with the termination of gold and porphyry copper deposits in Costa Rica.

lbis new concept in geology is introduced by a reinteipretation of the Archaean stratigraphy of the greenstone belts of the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia. Evidence is presented to show that the recorded Archaean succession of the Eastern Goldfields Province is composed of two distinct groups of mafic/ultrarnafic and felsic igneous rocks which, together with sediments, form alternating sequences represented by Cycles 1 to 4; Cycle 5 consists entirely of sediments. Recorded stratigraphy for the Murchison and corre1atives of the Southern Cross Subprovinces conform to this pattern. The five basic components are referred to as Unit 1 to Unit 5. A major erosional unconformity between Units 3 and 4 extending across the Craton is identified as a locus of potential major gold occurrence, including fossil placers, where suitable structural situations exist; Units 1 and 3 are identified as potential hosts of gold and nickel deposits; Units 2 and 4 for gold and base metals.

Drill performance monitoring studies were recently completed at the Fording River mine, British Columbia. Microprocessor-based instrumen- tation and data analysis techniques were developed with the objective to improve short and long term mine planning. Data analysis permitted the identification of thicknesses and interfaces between soft/hard zones at depth based upon the recorded responses of the drill. Data clearly con- trast the soft coal seams and harder waste rock units based on variations in recorded drill rotary speed and torque, hydraulic downpressure, bail- ing air pressure and instantaneous rate of penetration. These parameters were monitored and recorded at 10 cm sampling intervals. Processed drill data was correlated with gamma logs, an existing means for locating coal seams and distinguishing between waste units. Current development of a pattern recognition module aims towards automated interpretation of drill data, identifying micro-and macro-geological and geomechanical rock mass characteristics. Delay between acquiring, processing and interpret- ing the drill data for practical use by mine personnel should be minimized. Integration of this technology with the mine's current main-frame based Mine Engineering Application System software will enable more accurate and timely annlication of the nrocessed drill data.

Underground production from the low grade copper orebodies at Mount Lyell in recent years has involved surface subsidence of open cut areas. Relevant structural and lithological features of the geological environment are des- cribed. The highly mechanised underground mining system involves sublevel caving and sub- level open stoping with associated hangingwall cave. Monitoring of subsidence and caving has been made by regular visual inspection and measurement of crack development, and by sur- face profile surveys. These simple techniques have proved adequate in assuring management that ground movement is proceeding normally and safely.

Alternative processes for converting coal to liquid products and their stage of development are outlined. The merits of hydrogenationprocesses in general, and the solvent refined coal process in particular, are stressed. Bench scale experimental hydrogenation procedures used by the Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories Ltd. (ACIRL) to study the liquefaction of Australian coals and correlations between properties of such coals and their conversion to liquid products are described. Factors involved in assessing investment and operating costs for modern hydrogenation based coal refineries of different capacities are described with reference to a recent study undertaken in N.S.W. The significance of coal properties such as yield and yield structure of total liquid products and how they and other factors can influence the economics of the coal refining operations are discussed.

Hilton Mine is being developed as an integrated component of the Mount Isa operation, to achieve continuity of silver/lead/zinc production well into the next century. The mine has a chequered history from its discovery in 1947 through several periods of intense development activity, each of which has been curtailed due to the further development of the Isa Mine operation. This era has now passed; to sustain increased production rates at Mount Isa, there is a requirement for Hilton ore in 1989. The decision was made in 1983 to accelerate the programme of Hilton development by installing skip hoisting facilities in the main service shaft (P49), to facilitate the development of the mine to pre-production status. The Hilton development plan provides for the mining of selected orebodies, a broadening of the underground exploration drilling programme, and the establishment of significant mine infrastructure. Several technical challenges have been identified as important. The Hilton orebodies, although occurring in the same rock type as Isa Mine, are more faulted, jointed and intersected by intrusive dykes. The ore is more variable in terms of ore continuity, boundaries, grade and metal distribution and the mineralogy more complex. As a consequence the development of this project consists of a co-ordinated programme of mine exploration and development, rock mechanics investigations and metallurgical research and development work. Production will commence in 1986 at a rate of 1000 t/day using mechanized cut and fill techniques. It is planned to introduce sublevel open stoping and by 1996/97 the production rate will be 2.5 million t/yr.

A fully instrumented and bench-mounted diamond drilling machine, purpose designed and built, has been used for investigating the effect of aqueous solutions of various chemical compounds when used as drilling fluids. The rocks investigated were andesite, basalt and granite, the chemical compounds were alkylamines, with various hydrocarbon chain lengths, aluminium chloride and dioxane. Rotation speed seems to be one of the major factors affecting the emergence of mechanochemical effects as the results obtained with aluminium chloride clearly indicate. Penetration rate is either unaf- fected or enhanced by the presence of certain compounds, such as aluminium chloride. On the other hand, penetration rate diminishes when the drilling fluid contains dioxane and exhibits an apparently unpredictable behaviour with alkylamine solutions, although it appears that an increase in hydrocarbon chain length usually equates to an increase in penetration 1. Rock texture seems to have a pronounced effect on test repeatability. With hexadecy- lamine acetate solutions in concentrations ranging from 10-5 to 5 .10-4 molò dm 3 and 41.88 radòs-1 rotation speed, 46 % increments in penetration rate of andesite were observed, with respect to water, whereas penetration rate decreased in basalt by as much as 60¦%o when a dioxane solution was used as drilling fluid. An interpretation of the observed effects is proposed in the light of current knowledge of solid state physics and physical Chemistry.

The Imperial Smelting Process blast furnace (ISF) of the Sulphide Corporation Pty Limited zinc/lead smelter at Cockle Creek, New South wales, has in recent years greatly increased its consumption of low grade feed materials, and as a consequence has experienced periods of unstable furnace operation. Routine examination of production sinter, including softening characteristics and micro- examination, showed that the problems had been caused by an increasing silica content in sinter. The silica entered a low melting point glass phase containing calcium and lead oxides. The relative volume of this phase increased until it formed a continuous matrix in the sinter structure and this made the sinter more likely to soften at lower temperatures. Premature softening caused loss of operating stability in both the shaft and hearth of the ISr. The required sinter structure for ISF smelting was found to consist of a network of intermeshing, refractory crystals which provided skeletal strength for sinter lumps even after the glass phases had begun to soften and melt. With an understanding of the importance of microstructure and softening temperature of zinc/lead sinter and the progressive identification of those factors in sinter production which affect the microstructure, a significant improvement in stability of operations has been possible.

In the British coal mining industry, during the last decade, a great deal of environmental monitoring experience was acquired, particularly in the Doncaster Area of the Yorkshire coal- field, which had a long history of spontaneous combustion and gas emission problems. This paper summarises the experience obtained and shows how the introduction and operation of these systems has resulted in improved techniqu- es for fire detection and control. Some of these systems are described in detail with emphasis placed on the uses to which output data are put, and their impact upon management at colliery level. Reference is also made to the problems encountered in the development of such systems and how they were solved. The paper also makes reference to the recent Research and Development work of the NCB's Scientific Department and Mining Res- earch Development Establishment (MRDE), which was directed to the design and application of a range of underground sensors, and so ensured continuing progress in this field. The paper refers briefly to a new comprehensive monitoring unit and an integrated fire detection and data transmitting system which are currently being assessed in the Yorkshire coalfield.

An outline of the ventilation and refrigeration requirements of deep South African gold mines is presented. This is followed by a brief description of the history of controlled recirculation in mines and the practical and economic benefits such schemes can offer. The potential hazard of a fire in a recirculation system is discussed.The major part of the paper describes the first large-scale field trial of controlled recirculation to be conducted in South Africa. Emphasis is placed on the monitoring system that was used for data acquisition during the trial, and also on a safety system designed to shut off the recirculation fans in the event of a fire.The paper concludes with a review of the latest development work taking place on recirc-ulation safety systems.

The installation of a final cleaning column at Ok Tedi Mining Limited was carried out to increase final concentrate grade in order to reduce concentrate handling, shipping and treatment charges and to reduce penalty payments. To fast-track the project a decision was made to install a full-size column on one of the two parallel circuits, designed on information readily available and utilising the experience of mill staff and an engineering consultant, rather than delay installation while a pilot scale program was conducted. A 3.66 m diameter by 12.8 m high column was installed to produce 40 t/h of final concentrate from a combination of rougher concentrate and recleaner concentrate. The column design and sparger system were by Cominco Engineering Services Limited.

The Gympie Province is a unique tectono-stratigraphic unit which does not fit into the overall palaeogeographic pattern of the New England Fold Belt (NEFB), and part of it has been proposed as an exotic terrane more closely linked to New Zealand. From E to W the Gympie Province comprises 6 distinct units which can be evaluated as suspect or exotic terranes.

In surface mining, significant improvements in efficiency can be obtained through greater control over the formation of the muckpile. By tailoring the muckpile shape and its looseness to the requirements of the excavating equipment savings can be rea- lised through increased production, machine life and reduced maintenance. For instance, one open cut coal mine has recently estimated that a 2001o improvement in its front row throw would realise $320,000/year savings in rehandle costs alone. Previously greater throw has been achieved by increasing the powder factor through increased quantity of explosive or by drill- ing a larger number of holes-both at a significant cost penalty. However a recent series of experimental blasts demonstrated that it was possible to achieve a twofold increase in the distance of throw of a single row blast by simply changing delay timing alone. The Nobel Electronic Delay Detonator was used to provide the timing flexibility and control required for a thorough study of the effect of blast timing on heave. Whilst it is well accepted that the front row of a blast dominates the extent of throw, it was also found that the profile of the blast could be significantly altered. To date, the general consensus has been that the muckpile for- mation from a blast is a function of the blast geometry, the rock type, the explosive and the initiation sequence. Typically the geometry, rock type and initiation system have a far greater impact than the explosive type. This has been demonstrated by many high speed film studies. However the extent of influence via initiation has rarely been fully evaluated, owing largely to the limited control offered by conventional detonators.
