Poor selectivity in the separation of two sulphides generally arises because the flotation characteristics of the coarse sizes of the valuable mineral and finer sizes of non-valuable minerals are identical. Separat- ing the pulp into two size fractions at a specifically determined cut size and conditioning each size fraction with its own optimum reagent addi- tion is known to be helpful in improving such selectivity problems. The performance of the zinc section of the complex ore circuit at Wood- lawn Mines has been analysed in detail. The selective recovery of zinc was found to be a problem in zinc/pyrite separation. However, atypi- cally, the separation problem was between coarse zinc and coarse, not finer, pyrite. In spite of this the use of separate conditioning has effected significant improvements in rougher concentrate. Selectivity (and hence grade), overall recovery and flotation rate have all been enhanced. Dis- appointingly, coarse zinc recovery was not increased but, with careful optimization, this might be achieved without sacrificing the gains already realized. The technique of separate conditioning clearly has general application in other circuits where selectivity is a significant problem.

Discontinuities often have a very detrimental effect on the stability of mine highwall faces. The west wall of the Muja open cut is remarkable for the number and variety of discontinuity sets which occur over a relatively small area. To-date 14 separate structural domains have been identified over an area measuring approximately 560 m by 120 m.The structural domains have been grouped into four structural assemblages on the basis of their angular relationships to each other and to regional folding and faulting. The distribution of these structural assemblages appears to be erratic and no controlling factors have been identified to explain or predict them other than in the most generalised terms.

Paste fill has been used successfully at Henty Gold Mine for the past five years. It has allowed 100 per cent extraction of the orebody, stabilised poor ground and enabled wide sections and offsets to be mined safely. However, there are a number of inefficiencies in the current paste fill system. These include the low output from the drum filter, the addition of aggregate to the paste to compensate and the trucking of paste from the plant to the portal. These inefficiencies have increased the operating cost of the paste fill system and caused a number of operational challenges such as blockages and increased pipe wear. These challenges have been partly overcome by taking ownership of the paste fill process, improved quality control and better communication. Henty is currently developing two new orebodies, the Mt Julia and the Darwin and has an opportunity to build an efficient paste fill operation. This is likely to be a high density paste system without aggregate, either located above the new orebodies or located at the plant and pumped to the new site.

A study of high pressure rolls grinding of a number of Australian ores and minerals has been carried out using a pilot-scale machine with rolls 300 mm diameter and 70 mm wide. The results from this study have been used in conjunction with plant survey data to construct computer simulation models of various comminution circuits and these have been used to investigate options for incorporating high pressure grinding rolls into these comminution circuits. Possible rolls options for three of these circuits are presented, and likely energy savings over the existing circuits are discussed together with potential improvements in plant throughput and/or product sizing. A scale-up procedure for predicting full-scale machine performance from small-scale testing is described, and the effects of rolls operating conditions are also discussed.

The Mt Wright underground mine (MTW) is located near the town of Ravenswood in north Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited.The Mt Wright mine has gone through many stages, from the conception and implementation of the world first ‘sub-level shrinkage’ stoping (SLS) with continuous fill mining method in 2010, through to steady state production. These have been outlined in detail in papers presented by Mackay (2011) and Mackay, Long and Koen (2014) at previous Underground Operators Conferences.Since the last paper was presented, MTW has experienced significant change in two key areas.The first significant change was the discovery of a previously unknown hazard in the form of flat rilling events (FREs) from closed drawpoints (DPs). These events are believed to be unique to MTW and pose a significant risk to both the safety of personnel and the business as a whole. The paper will discuss this hazard and the evolution of the controls and practices that have been introduced to mitigate the risk posed by the identified hazards. The material involved in these events is extremely dry, fine and hot.The second significant change is an altered stress regime bought on in part by a change in the production front orientation and a general deterioration in ground conditions in some areas of the mine. This has caused some production interruptions at MTW. The second half of the paper will describe the challenges encountered, the mechanisms behind these challenges and the strategies implemented to safely return MTW production to planned levels.It is believed that other operations can learn from the issues mentioned above, and the paper has been written with this in mind.`CITATION:Long, S, Carnovale, D and Louwrens, L, 2017. The completion of the Hot Strip Mill at the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron & Steel Ltd., makes possible the production of steel plates and wide strip of a quality and in quantities not possible previously in Australia, and will also enable the production of tinplate to be undertaken in this country.The site chosen for the mill was a mud fiat underlain by a hard stone bottom at 5, to 801 feet below the surface; and a total area of one hundred acres was reclaimed to a level of 20 feet above the original surface.Three adjoining buildings were constructed to house the slab receiving yard, mill equipment and electric drive, together with the plate finishing line.After slabs have been heated to 2250°F at a rate of 90 tons per hour, they are transferred to the vertical scale breaker which is the first stand in the hot roughing mill. Here the primary furnace scale is first cracked and then blasted off by high velocity water descaling sprays.The next stand is the horizontal scale l;Jreaker, where any remaining primary scale is broken and then blasted off. After descaling, the slabs pass to the broadside mill, where short slabs are turned and rolled on broad side for wide plate.The next step is a slab squeezer which squares up the edges after broadsiding ready for the reversing mill. This is the finishing stand for plate and the last roughing stand for strip, which then passes to the finishing mill.The hot strip finishing mill consists of six stands with a maximum finishing speed of 2,230 feet per minute. The diverse nature of inadvertent mine fires does not lend them to general treatment. But evolving from the unfortunate fires over past years is a simple principle in dealing with all fires to bring combustion under control. Control, in brief, means that the products of combustion, themselves possibly still with fuel values, are not revitalised by addition of fresh air. There are problems with fire- fighting, especially with water, as this may lead to production of CO and H2. Panel ventilation upstream of the fire must be controlled to direct all air over the fire. Some advantages in fire fighting are found by the use of "sails". Early diagnosis of fires and early treatment are essential for safety of personnel and safeguarding and recovery of property. Preparedness extends to up to date documentation, but first hand knowledge also is invaluable to the diverse personnel gathered to fight a fire, and in the decision making Involved.

Krupp Polysius AG, FRG, in close cooperation with Prof. Dr. K. Schoenert, FRG have developed the principle of the high pressure grind- ing roll POLYCOM. The POLYCOM mill basically consists of two counter-rotating rolls of large diameter and relatively small width, one of which is fixed and the other moving in slide blocks. The pressure required for comminu- tion is applied via the sliding roll by a powerful hydraulic system. The comminution takes place between the rolls under high pressure in the bed of material by nipping and compacting. The top feed size-depending on the rolls diameter -may be as coarse as conventional secondary crusher feed and the product is a compacted cake containing a high amount of fines created by micro-cracking. The amount of fines depends on the pres- sure (grinding force) applied. Operating results show that even in wet griding circuits capacity increases at downstream connected grinding mills of up to 100010 can be accomplished with an interconnected POLYCOM machine and energy savings of up to 25070 may be achieved depending on application. POLYCOM can be used in existing grinding plants for low-cost upgrad- ing of capacities but also as an advanced alternative to conventional crush- ing and grinding equipment in open or closed circuit configuration. A single industrial size 2.8m roll diameter POLYCOM machine may be fed with top feed size of up to 200mm and produce a finish product as fine- grained as known from rod and ball mills but with less energy consumption. Meanwhile, the POLYCOM high pressure grinding roll has established itself world-wide in the cement industry and is now entering the mining industry. POLYCOM machines are currently designed in industrial standard sizes of 1.0m to 2.0m rolls diameter and drive units of up to 2400 kW. This paper includes: principles of high pressure grinding, main fea tures of the POLYCOM machine, results of tests on various materials including Australian gold and copper ores carried out at the POLYSIUS research centre in Germany. Some examples of industrial applications of high pressure grinding will also be presented.

The results of a study on the flotation of baddeleyite and associate minerals are presented, together with effective flotation reagents. Detailed microcrystallomorphological analysis of the benefication products were made to find out the features of distribution of different baddeleyite generations between froth and chamber products. To reveal the dynamics of interaction of technological properties of minerals with their morphology and constitution, a method of onthogenetic analysis was used. It is well known that the difference between technological properties of the particles of the same mineral depend greatly on its genesis, but also the relation is direct - by means of constitution (habit). Thus, flotation behaviour of minerals depends on morphology microinclusions, distribution of impurities, dislocations and physical properties of individual particles. The microrelief of baddeleyite grains and crystals from froth and chamber products was studied with an electron scanning microscope. Chemical composition was determined by means of laser, microprobe and chemical analyses. The difference between baddeleyite generations, their distribution in benefication products, and the effects of grain sizes, number of inclusions and chemical compositions were valuated. Conclusions on baddeleyite flotation properties were made. Mineralogical study on eudialite grains from rough ore and eudialite concentrate was carried out. The interrelation between eudialite and associate minerals and negative effect of aegirine on technological properties of eudialite were revealed as well.

The equilibrium phase relations in the Fe- Mn-Ti-0-S system were established at 1380 and 1485 K. The elemental distributions between the equilibrium phases were obtained by chemical- ly analysing selected samples from the phase study. The results are considered in relation to the coal reduction process for upgrading ilmenite. The beneficial effect of adding sulfur to a kiln that uses a manganese-rich feed is ex- plained by the formation of a metal-sulfide solid-solution phase that removes part of the manganese from the oxide system. The optimum conditions for operating the reduction kiln are determined, and the practical need to operate the kiln at other than optimum conditions is explained. It is shown how the experimental data can be used to predict the best compromise conditions for reduction and the resultant purity of the product.

In 2005, Glass Earth Limited (GEL) commissioned two large area detailed airborne geophysical programmes in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ). In the first survey Bell Geospace Ltd of Scotland conducted an Air-FTG« (airborne Full Tensor Gravity Gradiometry) survey covering 2338km2 at 300m line spacing. The second survey by UTS Geophysics, Australia included detailed airborne magnetic, radiometric and digital terrain data capture covering 5341km2 at 150m line spacing.   From the detailed geophysical data collected it is possible to identify major deeply penetrative crustal structures within the TVZ, as well as define subsurface geological features, such as intrusive bodies and alteration zones. These major deep crustal structures are thought to have a controlling influence on the distribution of epithermal gold mineralising systems, and along the corridors defined by these deep crustal zones, the chances of discovery of an economic epithermal gold discovery are greatly increased.   In this paper GEL gives some examples of the application of its integrated data driven approach to exploration in the TVZ at both regional and project scale. The paper focuses on how GEL identifies regional scale highly prospective deep crustal structures. Then, using the Horohoro epithermal gold system as an example, we show how GEL applies innovative geological and geophysical data processing to model and understand detailed subsurface geology, focusing subsequent exploration to ensure the best opportunity for a new economic epithermal gold discovery.

Perhaps the only thing certain about an address that purports to look into the future of any human endeavour is that time will prove it :.o be inaccurate. In undertaking the dubious, but oft-times necessary business of prediction, thr, historian will base his/her forecasts on tr-ands of the past, the speculator on current events, and the politician on what he/she would dearly like to see happen. The thoughts expressed in this address seem to have arisen through exercising a combination of all three of those philosophies but, hopefully, with a smat- tering of pragmatism.

The existence of Gabal El Kahfa ring complex, located in the Eastern Desert of Egypt, has been ascertained from aeromagnetic and aeroradiometric survey data as well as by aerial photography. Two maps for -the net aerial radiometric measurements reduced to ground level and aerial magnetic data corrected for the regional normal gradient of the earth's magnetic field have been constructed. The aeroradioactivity data have been interpreted geologically and analyzed statistically to outline various radiometric units and compute their charac- teristic statistics. The ring complex showed a circular radiometric feature and yielded a radiometric mean background and a standard deviation of 6.48 and 0.89 pR/h respectively. Besides, the observations showed a normal distribution. The aeromagnetic data have been reduced to the north magnetic pole, then filtered to produce the regional-and residual-component maps. Statistical trend analysis was conducted for the tectonic linea- ments resulting from the three magnetic maps, to define the structural framework of the area under study. This statistical study proved the exis- tence of trends in the east-west, northwest-south- east, northeast-southwest and north-south directions. The ring complex is characterized by a circular magnetic feature, whose average relief is 2150 nT. It is included within a high east-west trending magnetic zone. The latter represents a deep-seated uplift or anticline which is bordered from all sides by some faults of different trends.

Double-stack trains in the United States date back to the early 1980s, starting about the time deregulation of the rail industry occurred. Freight rail became increasingly more competitive to trucking and barge or ship, and led to major investments in railroad infrastructure. Since most railroad tunnels in the United States were constructed between 1880 and 1930, they were not built tall enough to accommodate modern double-stack intermodal railcars. Therefore, as double-stack trains became the norm, existing tunnels became bottlenecks, and railroads wanted the tunnels made larger without impacting traffic. This need to increase the clearance while not impacting rail traffic launched a very specialised industry: the design and construction of replacement lining systems in existing tunnels.Several large multitunnel railroad clearance improvement projects have been completed in the country in the last decade, and they have all been done under ‘live track’ conditions. Live track conditions consist of work windows, often anywhere from four to 12 hours, that are provided to the contractor to complete the construction work. By the end of each work window, the tunnel must be secured so that the railroad can run trains.In addition to improving the clearance, these projects provided the railroads with an opportunity to improve the general condition of the tunnels, including structural, seepage, drainage and icing conditions. This paper discusses the design considerations, tunnel assessments and construction methods used for these live track railroad tunnel projects. Seepage and drainage improvements that were incorporated into the clearance improvement projects are also discussed.CITATION:Schrank, J, 2014. Research conducted into backfill drainage at Mount Isa Mines since 1992 is described. Piping in draining backfilled scopes has been the primary cause of bulkhead failures and emphasis is placed on research into the piping mechanism. Laboratory and in situ tests aimed at understanding the piping mechanism have been conducted and the results are presented. A case history of piping in a draining bench scope fill mass is described and a technique for reducing the potential for bulkhead failures in hench stopes is presented. Hydraulic fill is produced by standard cycloning of tailings and the overflow (reject material) is sent to thickeners prior to placement in the tailings dams. Research into the partial introduction of thickener underflow into the backfill system and its influence on backfill drainage is also descrihed.

The role of chemical speciation in alkaline cyanide solutions is discussed by reference to recent experimental data from the authors' laboratories. It is shown that serious gaps exist in our present knowledge of the thermodynamics of cyanide complexes in solution. Nevertheless, using the available data and the JESS suite of computer programs it has been possible to develop a simplified chemical speciation model for alkaline cyanide solutions under conditions relevant to the gold extraction process. Some possible implications of the model for plant operations are Discussed.

This paper outlines a comparison of heavy liquid and heavy suspension separation methods for iron ore characterisation.As part of Arrium MiningÆs program to improve its knowledge of ore types being processed in its two hematite ore beneficiation plants (OBP), metallurgical evaluation of hematite feed for the upgrading process has become a major focus.Iron ore deposits almost always contain more than one valuable (and relatively dense) iron mineral. Iron ores are found with a range of iron contents, giving rise to density variations.At present the industry relies on heavy liquid separation techniques for the evaluation of iron ore samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes. There are only a few high-density liquids available, which are both high-cost and highly toxic.Low-toxicity solutions that can be utilised at relative densities up to 3.0 have been developed. However, highly-toxic organic liquids are required presently to achieve relative densities beyond 3.0.Bromoform which has a specific gravity (SG) of 2.89, and diiodomethane (SG 3.31) are commonly used; both present significant health and safety hazards.æClericiÆs solutionÆ (mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate) provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0. ClericiÆs solution is highly toxic and testing is currently conducted by a limited number of laboratories worldwide.An alternative to ClericiÆs solution and organic liquids is a low-toxicity, high-SG, suspension technique, which has been demonstrated successfully for heavy mineral sands. This heavy suspension method employs mixtures of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) solutions.Heavy liquid separation is not commonly used as part of routine iron ore feed characterisation due to the expensive, toxic and time consuming nature of the technique. Our results show that the heavy suspensions method can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separation and are outlined and results compared with results using ClericiÆs solution presented.Heavy suspension technique provides a theoretical/absolute separation of a particular sample. By placing an iron ore sample in a suspension of a particular density, it produces two products: a sink fraction and a float fraction. As iron oxides-hydroxyoxides are denser than the gangue minerals associated with the ore, particles that have high iron content will sink and the particles with gangue association will float. This process is repeated over several densities, thus also enabling separation of the constituent iron ore phases. A theoretical grade and a theoretical mass recovery can be calculated. With these calculations, a grade-mass recovery curve can be constructed for any element that is of interest.This type of characterisation can be used to either prepare OBP feed-piles of known processing characteristics, or to benchmark the performance of the process against what can be theoretically achieved on a continuous basis.CITATION:Begelhole, J, Jasper, J and Koroznikova, L, 2013. The Rosebery Mine on the west coast of Tasmania is a world class polymetallic base metal deposit, containing six major minerals: galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, gold, silver and pyrite. This resource has been exploited for nearly a century, yet a reliable estimate of the reserve continues to present a challenge.Over the past twenty years, the operation has changed from relatively low productivity cut and fill timber-support scraper mining, to higher productivity bulk mechanised open stoping. At the same time, economic constraints have changed and grades have fallen, which have increased the pressure to refine the resource/reserve estimating processes. This paper compares the restrictions of the polygonal section method of the past with the advantages of a kriged block model. The limitations of Mine Call Factors, the problems involved in converting decades of diamond drilling data on paper into a computer data base, and the effect of this new methodology at Rosebery, are described.

There is currently a world wide interest in coal-oil technology as the search continues for alternative energy sources to reduce the consumption of petroleum crude. An important aspect of this coal-oil technology study is to obtain information on the flow properties of coal-oil slurries. While some work has been reported on the flow behaviour of black coal-oil suspensions, very little work on brown coal-oil suspensions has been reported. In this paper flow charac- teristics of brown coal-oil suspensions for various coal concentration and temperatures have been presented. A Capillary rheometer, designed to handle settling suspension, has been used for deter- mining rheological properties. Brown coal of 0 0725 mm average particle diameter has been used in this work. The oil was a coal derived product having a boiling point range of 234¦- 319¦C, Apparent viscosity of all suspensions was found to increase on storage due to ageing. Ageing might have occurred due to physico- chemical interactions between coal and oil. Flow behaviour of some suspensions changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian on storage.
