Data from ball mills of a wide range of sizes are analysed using detailed mathematical models and non-linear least squares fitting techniques. This analysis reveals that the relative power inefficiency of large ball mills is due to inefficient grinding of coarse (plus 4 mm) particles in these mills. A qualitative physical hypothesis is proposed to explain this behaviour. The results of the analysis can be used to scale up ball mill behaviour, using the mathematical models and techniques developed. A simpler ball mill scale-up procedure is also proposed, and its limitations stated. Laboratory experiments are being conducted to determine the average size distributions of single particles of different ores after breaKage. These experiments can distinguish between the different ores, and it is hoped to use their results to model and predict the grinding of different ores in ball Mills.

Two characteristics of the modern mining industry are that there is a skill shortage and that young professional people rise rapidly into highly responsible supervisory positions. With this responsibility comes the burden of identifying and managing health and safety risks. Without the benefit of a comprehensive health and safety training program, these young professionals may be putting both themselves and those under their supervision at risk. The Moura Mine explosions and the asbestos health disaster should not be just artifacts of history, but highly valued lessons that impress the need for comprehensive health and safety risk management strategies on young professionals. From the perspective of the former secretary of the Committee to implement the findings of the Moura (Disaster) Inquiry and as the former coordinator of the Coal Workers Health Scheme, key issues in occupational health and safety management systems are explored.

Bougainville copper concentrate was leached with a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (SPKI) in a 5 per cent CO2 nitrogen atmosphere.Copper solubilization was 100 per cent in presence of bacteria and only 30 per cent in a sterile acid control medium.Anaerobic copper solubilization rates were one quarter of those measured under aerobic conditions and did not generate acidity.

In the comminution industry cone crushers are widely used for secondary and subsequent stages of size reduction. Traditionally cone crushers have been operated and monitored manually. Alteration of discharge setting is now commonly achieved via hydraulic means, however, compensation of liner wear can still involve plant shutdown and loss of production. Drift in discharge setting due to liner wear is still a major problem that must be addressed to improve product quality, consistency and reduce recirculating load. The continuous demand for better quality products and the high cost of reprocessing or discarding unsaleable material, highlights the need for re-examination of the technology associated with the crushers to ensure optimum control and system efficiency. A collaborative project between Pegson Ltd, one of the leading UK manufacturers of jaw and cone crushers, De Montfort University Leicester, and Transfer Technology plc was established to address the technological requirement for automation of the control of cone crushers. The machine chosen for the study is a 900 Autocone cone crusher manufactured by Pegson Ltd. The design philosophy is based on a mechatronic approach providing a complete solution through a distributed network of intelligent sensors, artificial intelligence technology and adaptive control. The modular design of the system ensures a progressive sophistication in technology that allows the automation to be phased in as required. This will ensure maximum benefits to all sectors of the aggregate industry. It is estimated that the automation will result in savings of around ten per cent. The savings will result from minimising the production of unsaleable products by reliable condition monitoring and automation of the control and maintenance of system parameters to optimise system efficiency. Extension of the methods and principles into the mining sector is anticipated. The control over the size of crusher product will offer great benefits to the mining industry with significant implications for subsequent milling and beneficiation processes.

The Gympie Goldfield was the sixth largest producer of gold in historic terms in Australia. The Joint Venture Agreement between BHP Gold Mines Limited and Devex Limited was signed in January 1987. Since that time, some $20 million have been spent on underground and surface exploration work in the southern portion of the goldfield. The project is of considerable interest as the dewatering, rehabilitation and equipping of an old rectangular timber-lined shaft has been undertaken. The project is located in Gympie, a city of 10,000 people. The issues of dealing with urbanisation and associated environmental aspects are vital to the success of the project. An outline of the project and the geology of the mineralised structures follows:

Diamond cores and drill chips provide the only direct physical evidence for ore containing rocks. Early characterisation of cores and drill chips is important as it provides critical information for downstream processing. Traditional characterisation techniques include visual logging by a geologist or analytic and spectroscopic methods but they are time consuming and can miss some important textural or geomechanical features.The goal of this work is to evaluate the application of image analysis to iron ore cores and drill chips and to suggest improvements to existing core-scanning and chip monitoring systems. Two samples of massive ore differing by their mineralogy and texture, as well as two different batches of drill chips, have been imaged and analysed. Results are compared in function of the imaging system and the classification algorithms.As a conclusion, despite the necessity for more testing and improvements in calibration and lighting, it is obvious that image analysis technologies can bring a lot of useful information in the perspective of a geometallurgical mapping of the deposit.

Contemporary approaches to safety management appear to be failing short of meeting its mark in improving mine safety. This is evidenced by the high workers compensation, high incidence rates and fatalities. Evidence from high-risk and complex organisations points towards safety culture as being important in improving site safety. In more recent years resilience engineering has been touted as a new and innovative way of managing safety. This paper reviews and synthesises previous literature on safety culture and resilience engineering. It then highlights methods that can be used to measure safety culture and resilience engineering, and explores similarities and differences between complex organisations and gold mining to identify opportunities for more innovative approaches to improving safety in gold mining operations through safety culture and resilience engineering.

Bauxite Resources Limited is grade drilling in its Western Australian Darling Range tenements to firm up resource definition and to develop mine plans. The Darling Range bauxite is generally in shallow deposits with minimum overburden. In the northern tenements, the ore is characterised by a higher silica layer which may extend from 0.5 to 1.5 m below, which high grade bauxite is found to a depth of four to 7 m. When grade drilling samples are taken, every 0.5 m and the recovered sample is weighed, logged and bagged. To eliminate splitting errors, the whole sample over the short interval is pulverised. Twinning holes variations are observed when using various drill rigs. Diamond core has been shown to give close to 100 per cent recovery and grades have been verified by digging bulk samples. As such, diamond core is used as the reference. It is intended to include sonic drilling as an alternative to diamond cores. This presentation details and attempts to explain the reasons for the observed variations in the various drilling methods used by Bauxite Resources Limited. The Nanisivik Mine is located 750 km north of the Arctic Circle at the north end of Baffin Island in the Canadian High Arctic, and has been in production since 1976. The paper describes the regional and local geology and the current mining and mineral processing operations, including recent innovations in each area. The Nanisivik zinc-lead deposits comprise Mississippi Valley type sulphides in a block-faulted sediment sequence of Proterozoic age. The deposits formed in two mineralizing stages by replacement of the carbonate host rock. Exploration techniques adapted to the permafrost environment include high frequency EM and ground probing radar. Core drilling is done with calcium chloride brine but trials with heated flushing water indicate potential for cost reduction. The predominant mining method at Nanisivik is room and pillar. Cut and fill is used in some satellites to the main zone. Due to the permafrost, dry drilling is employed in the underground mining. The permafrost enhances ground stability, permitting large underground openings and, as a result, the use of relatively large scale mining equipment. For power conservation, a remote control system for the ventilation fans has reduced mine power costs. The milling of the simple coarse-grained ore in an arctic environment requires special techniques in the design and operation of the plant for materials handling, utilisation of waste heat, reagent selection and tailings disposal. Regulated heavy metal contents in effluents discharged to the sensitive environment are achieved by natural processes. A recent change from sub-aqueous disposal of tailings to beach type deposition within a cell in the tailings area is reviewed. Planning closure of the property presents special problems and an opportunity for innovative techniques. Approximately 25 per cent of the employees at Nanisivik are drawn from the Inuit population of the Canadian Arctic. As the first permanent industrial activity in the High Arctic some innovative approaches to employee relations were required which have resulted in a very stable, culturally mixed community in a remote location.

"Underground mine scheduling decision-making has been based on production requirements, equipment productivities and the mine planner’s instincts on the best scheduling strategy for the mine to optimise the net present value (NPV) of a project.In the last few years, innovative software has been developed to optimise underground schedules based on NPV. The schedule optimisation tool (SOT) allows the user to set up scenarios based on grade, metal content, capital and operating costs.This paper discusses the results of two case studies undertaken using the SOT software to optimise the NPV of the projects.In each case study, the SOT software has been applied in two ways:using the original mine planner’s scenario and determining whether the NPV could be improved by changing resource capacitieschanging the scheduling goals to determine whether a different mining strategy would have a better NPV outcome.The outcomes of the case studies demonstrate that the mine layout and design were contributing factors to the overall improvement of the NPV and that SOT has a more noticeable impact on the NPV of projects where less sequence constraints are required, such as geotechnical sequencing and access development.CITATION:Ebbels, A M, 2016. Analysis of the topography associated with large vertical strains measured in the upper crust in the Basin and Range and elsewhere in the US Cordillera shows that it varies systematically with upper crustal strain such that it decreases where tectonism has resulted in relative thinning. The magnitude of topographic deflection suggests that the amount of thickening or thinning of the upper crust cannot also be reflected in vertical motions of the Moho discontinuity, nor can the vertical strain be isostatically accommodated by inflow or outflow of asthenosphere, mantle lithosphere or mafic lower crust. Simple isostatic calculations show that the compensating medium had a density probably within 100-200 kg/m of average upper continental crust, thus indicating that the compensating medium lies within the crust and is probably in large part quartzose. This conclusion is in accord with laboratory experiments on the strengths of rocks, and with reflection seismograms in deformed regions which suggest that the Moho is generally flat beneath regions of extreme gradients in upper crustal vertical strain. The upper crust floats on a quartzose layer in the mid-crust which, under orogenic conditions, is apparently so weak that it behaves as a relatively inviscid fluid at geologic timescales (> 10,000 a) and subcontinental lengthscales (100-1000 km).

Cyanidation tests by bottle agitation were conducted on an oxidized lead-silver ore containing approximately 12% Pb and 500 g/t Ag. Over 60% of the silver was leached when the ore was ground to 100% passing 0.15mm, whereas 50-60% of the silver was leached when the ore was only ground to 100% passing 0.5mm. Slurry handling and dewatering at the fine grind size were very difficult due to the high clay content of the ore, however this problem was greatly reduced at the coar- ser grind size. The silver recovery at the fine grind size was very dependent on cyanide solution strength with stronger cyanide sol- utions (containing more than 0.1% NaCN) re- sulting in lower solution silver contents. This was thought to be due to the precipi- tation of leached silver by zinc, which was also leached from the ore by the higher cyanide levels. There was a critical zinc level in solution of approximately 1000ppm, above which the silver recovery fell markedly. Cyanide and lime consumptions for this ore were high (typically 5 kg/t and 40 kg/t respectively), hence the processing of this particular ore by cyanide leaching is un- economic at current silver prices.

The carbon reduction of tantalum pentoxide was investigated in a plasma-arc furnace. The sample was a mixture of tantalum pentoxide and graphite, vacuum pressed into a briquette and was reduced at about 3100¦C. Argon was used as the are gas. The optimum mixing ratio of carbon and tantalum pentoxide, C/Ta205 is 5.10--5.15. The sample, weighing 7 g is fused within 60^ 70 seconds by plasma-arc heating and the reduction of molten tantalum oxide with solid carbon pro- ceeds rapidly to approximately 99.5 % Ta during this period. The reduction that follows in the molten state is slow. Within about 10 minutes, the maximum tantalum content of the massive metal product reaches 99.9 % and the oxygen and carbon remaining in the product are 50 ppm and 400. 500 ppm respectively.

In the field of mineral extraction, complex technologies are being introduced in mines, operators/technicians rely on assistance from an expert (or more) in order to keep their machines functioning. Personnel with such expertise, however, are not always physically on-site. There is a growing need for innovative technological solutions to support effective delivery, just in time, of remote guidance between an offsite expert and an on-site maintenance operator. To meet this need, we have, as part of our Human System Integration project within the CSIRO’s Minerals Down Under (MDU), Transforming the Future Mine theme, explored the usefulness of a number of emerging technologies including: augmented reality, wearable systems and touch table interfaces. This paper presents ReMoTe, an augmented realty system for remote guiding using a touch table interface for the expert station and a combination of augmented reality and a wearable system at the operator end. In designing this system we were interested in exploring the extent to which it can increase the productivity and safety of maintenance personnel. This paper also presents Mobile ReMote, our recent development of a fully mobile remote guiding system. In Mobile ReMote, both the expert and the operator are using a near eye display and wearing a light computer in a back pack. The expert is able to guide the operator using his/her hands on the virtual display, while the operator is able to see the instructions on the rear eye display. Workers in the mining industry are highly mobile, a mobile expert and operator station will meet this need.

The sulphide ores of the Kalgoorlie goldfield have long been looked upon as' refractory, involving special metallurgical treatment. For many years two kinds of treatment have been practised-(l) wet treatment, including fine grinding, amalgamation or concentration of the free gold, concentration of the sulphide minerals with subsequent roasting and cyanidation, and cyanidation or bromo-cyanidation of the residue from the concentrating operation; (2) dry-crushing of the ore and roasting the whole of thecrushed ore, amalgamation of the gold in the calcine during fine grading, followed by cyanidation. The wet treatment was advanced a stage further when, in 1929, the Lake View and Star Ltd. adopted large scale flotation. As a consequence, however, further metallurgical problems were introduced. This paper covers the investigation, ,of one of the most prominent of these problems.Flotation preceded by strakes was satisfactory to a point.The flotation concentrate consisted largely of auriferous pyrite and tellurides, and the gangue minerals in the concentrate were practically barren.Several sources of loss of gold values were, however, found to be associated with this circuit, viz.-(a) There was the loss of gold in the flotation tailing.(b) Loss by dusting during roasting of the flotation concentrate.(c) Loss of gold in the cyanided residue.

In the context of a case study for an underground gold mine, the value generated by a schedule optimisation tool (SOT) is assessed. SOT is a software tool for underground mine planning that maximises the net present value (NPV) of a development and production schedule. A baseline study measures the NPV of a schedule generated by SOT from a sequence prepared by the site mine planners. Operational resource constraints and precedence constraints are adhered to by the schedule and NPV is evaluated with a financial model including revenues, costs and discount rate, as specified by the mine planner.The case study has several facets in addition to the baselining component. Scenarios were conducted that examined the degree of constraint on operational resources, the projected gold price and unit costs. Life-of-mine schedules subject to optimisation using SOT allowed for equitable comparisons.Haulage was identified as a dominant constraint for the mine. It was one of six operational resources that were used to constrain the optimisation of the mine schedule, with alternative levels for some of these constraints being identified so that their effects on the NPV could be studied. Alternative price projections for gold and different cost projections were identified and their effects on the optimised schedule examined. Price and cost scenarios that brought additional economic material into the schedule at various times in the mine life were considered in comparison to a scenario that assumed no additional economic material would become available.This case study illustrated that the use of a schedule optimisation tool to optimise mine schedules provides mine planners with an ability to perform a wide variety of analyses in a relatively short period of time. Such tools thereby support strategic decision-making that can add significant value to an orebody.The case study demonstrates that by fixing the set of development and production activities to be carried out before optimising the life-of-mine schedule, the mine planners can inadvertently set up a situation where the NPV would be progressively eroded in the last several years of the mine life. Increasing concern with the emission of sulphur dioxide from smelters and roasters has caused renewed interest in processes which can use waste sulphur dioxide, such as the sulphation of nickel laterite ores. The process described here proposes to by-pass the production of sulphuric acid and react laterite directly with a sulphur dioxide containing atmosphere. A thermodynamic analysis identified operating windows in which nickel sulphate forms while iron oxide (the major impurity in most laterite ores) remains stable. The initial assumptions included unit activity of all species except nickel oxide. The lowest possible nickel oxide activity (while maintaining selectivity) increased with increasing temperature, indicating that selective sulphation is favoured by low temperatures. The temperature of interest was found to be between 500 and 800¦C. Calculations show that a feed gas containing ten per cent SO2, five per cent 02, balance N2 requires a temperature greater than 650¦C for selective sulphation of nickel. Laboratory experiments showed that the assumption of unit activity of ferric sulphate was unrealistic above about 680¦C due most likely to the formation of solid solutions which decreased the ferric sulphate activity. Results are presented which illustrate the limiting equilibrium sulphur trioxide partial pressures at 700 and 730¦C below which selective sulphation occurs. Cobalt extraction was usually between 80 and 95 per cent under conditions yielding selective sulphation, whilst nickel extraction was about 50 to 75 per cent depending on temperature and choice of upper limit of iron extraction. An operating diagram is presented for a limonite ore and shows that the optimum reaction conditions are 680¦C and an input gas containing 20 per cent SO2. Under these conditions nickel, cobalt and iron extractions are 73, 95 and two per cent respectively.

In order to understand the effect of oxygen injection into the molten metal on the valuable metals (VM) recovery and interfacial phenomena, several high-temperature experiments were conducted using a high-frequency induction furnace with a quartz tube as the reaction chamber at 1673 K. Copper-based waste printed circuit board (PCB) that contains some impurities was selected as the end-of-life resource. CaO-SiO2 based pre-fused slag and oxygen gas were used in present works. The composition change and microstructure of the samples were analysed. As oxygen was injected into the system, impurities were rapidly removed. After the removal of impurities, continuously injected oxygen lowered interfacial tension between liquid slag and liquid metal. Lowered interfacial tension induced Cu loss into the slag.

Most types of nuclear power reactors use uranium dioxide fuel. Power reactors using natural uranium dioxide'fuel are of special interest to countries such as Australia that have their own uranium supplies. A wide range of uranium dioxide powders can be fabricated and the ideal one flows readily, presses without the need for binders or lubricants, sinters to the required density and gives low reject rates at all fabrication stages. Sinterable uranium dioxide is usually produced via the ammonium diuranate route. The A.A.E.C. is aiming to demonstrate production of nuclear grade uranium dioxide from Australian concentrates, improving technology where possible. Details are given of the dissolution, solvent extraction, precipitation, filtration, drying, and calcination-reduction steps. Solvent extraction from sulphate media is also under study with a view to developing a process to produce a nuclear grade product at the mine treatment plant site,

The Ok Tedi copper and gold project, located in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea, commenced operations in 1983. The open cut mine has undergone several significant transformations throughout its project life including changes of ownership, mine life extensions and varying production performance profiles. As of today, the Ok Tedi Mine is a 100 per cent PNG owned company (67 per cent State and 33 per cent Western Province and Communities) and has a life-ofmine plan extending out to about 2032.
