The æMine to MillÆ concept is not new. In fact, it is the underlying objective of every mine. Unfortunately, in many operations the management structure and reporting systems have created independent æbusinessesÆ within the overall mining enterprise. This has created incentives to optimise the performance of each component of the operation rather than the enterprise as a whole. The Mine to Mill Conference organised by The AusIMM in October 1998 documented a number of case studies where run of mine ore was not presented to the mill in the best possible form for subsequent stages of comminution and processing. A number of examples were quoted where modest expenditure in the mine had a very significant impact on downstream process efficiency and hence costs. Examples included:the minimisation of fines in the mining and handling of iron ore; the management of fines in blasting and crushing for a copper heap leach operation; the control of blast damage, mining recovery and dilution in open cut coal operations; and the optimisation of mine fragmentation to increase mill throughput in gold and copper operations. The latter topic has been trialed at a number of mines and is referred to as æMine to MillÆ fragmentation. A number of æMine to MillÆ type investigations have been reported in the literature including Pease et al, Simkus and Dance, Nielsen, Scott et al, Kojovic et al, Kanchibotla et al, Bulow et al and Hawkes from the 1998 Mine to Mill Conference. In addition, a number of studies are in progress or the results have yet to be published. These studies have demonstrated the feasibility of obtaining the data required to characterise the breakage behaviour of ores and to model the impact of changes to blasting practices on process efficiency. Characterising the breakage behaviour of ores is a vital step in the management of fragmentation and comminution in mines. The characteristics of importance to fragmentation fall outside the parameters conventionally required to describe the economic geology of a deposit. æMine to MillÆ optimisation of fragmentation means that the mining engineer needs information from the geologist in order to be able to help the metallurgist. Providing this information requires close interaction between these groups.

High-chromium vanadium-titanium magnetite has not been exploited and made full use of on a large scale so far due to the immature utilisation technology and the reality that the utilisation efficiency of valuable metals still urgently needs to be improved. In the present paper, the isothermal reduction kinetics and mechanism of high-chromium vanadium-titanium pellets were studied at 800–1100°C. The mineral composition transformation of pellets before and after reduction was analysed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the microstructures were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) to reveal the elemental distributions. The effect of reduction temperature on the volumetric swelling degree and cold crushing strength was also studied. It was found that reduction temperature has a large effect on the reduction rate of pellets, and the increase in reduction rate is more obvious in the range 1000–1100°C than 800–1000°C. The volumetric swelling degree of pellets increased with increasing reduction temperature, while the cold crushing strength decreased. The transformation of mineral species can be expressed as Fe2O3 ? Fe3O4 ? FeO ? Fe, Fe2O3·3TiO2 ? Fe3O4· (2FeO·TiO2 ) ? 2FeO· TiO2 ? FeO·TiO2, (Fe0.6Cr0.4)2O3 ? FeO· Cr2O3 ? Cr2O3 , and Fe2O3· VO/V2O3 ? VO. The apparent activation energy of the reduction reaction was calculated to be 44.3 kJ/mol, and the reduction rate is controlled by the combined effect of interfacial chemical reaction and gas diffusion through the porous product layer. The rate controlling steps were further studied by calculating the resistance percentages. Mining education in Ballarat has a long and proud history dating back to the 1870s. Today the School of Engineering continues this tradition at the University of Ballarat. The recent review of Tertiary Minerals Education by the Minerals Council of Australia has questioned the current situation regarding Minerals tertiary education in Australia and recommendations have been made regarding the future of minerals tertiary education. This paper initially examines the original recommendations made by the Minerals Council of Australia and assesses subsequent changes made to these recommendations. Secondly the paper outlines the future shape of mining education in the light of these recommendations given that they are implemented. Finally the future delivery of mining education is discussed, particularly with respect to the impact of modern technologies.

It is sometimes necessary to resort to extremes in order to call attention to something that is pertinent to safety in mining. When some of the experts in occupational safety talk about this topic, they usually refer to a 'regulation' established by the Romans which stated that, due to the health hazards, usually death, no Romans but only slaves should work in mining. Since the time of the Roman Empire, a lot of ground has been covered in the field of mine safety. Nowadays, it can be said that occupational safety is being seriously addressed, with the result that the number of mining accidents has reduced dramatically, fatalities in this industry are less frequent, and the rate of accidents compared with other activities, such as construction or fanning, is low. This achievement has been possible initially through government legislation and by procedures established by the mining companies themselves. However, the dilemma for government is whether to regulate and if so, how much. It is pleasing to observe that most companies are establishing working procedures which conform with new government legislation, placing strong emphasis on the duty of care for mine employees. There will always be some regulatory aspects of legislation, and perhaps the best example of this is in the use of mine hoists where there are no international or Australian standards, and the regulations applied are of an empirical nature that err on the side of safety.

The development of novel technologies capable of real-time, high-accuracy, automated analysis of gold, other precious metals and mineralogy, both in ore samples and directly on process streams is reported.X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis is widely used for process stream monitoring of base metals. However, detection limits are generally a few parts-per-million (ppm) or larger, precluding the use of this method for monitoring precious metals. Complex interferences with other elements also limit accuracy. An XRF slurry analyser that uses advanced data-analysis techniques to resolve overlapping fluorescence lines, achieving detection limits in the parts-per-billion (ppb) range has been developed. This allows feed, concentrate and tailings streams in precious metal applications to be monitored in real-time. An extended trial of our technology in a platinum group element concentrator and laboratory tests on gold process slurries in the 0.1 - 2.0 ppm concentration range is discussed.Analysis of process stream mineralogy can provide useful information to supplement conventional elemental data. An on-stream X-ray diffraction analysis technique that provide real-time mineral and elemental measurement of process slurry streams has been developed. Both X-ray techniques can be combined into a single on-stream analyser to provide simultaneous elemental and mineralogical information. The successful trial of a combined XRDF (X-ray diffraction and fluorescence) slurry analyser is also reported.It is widely recognised that rapid, accurate analysis of grade is an essential prerequisite for optimising the efficiency of exploration, mining and processing of metals ores. The low grades of precious metals ores, such as gold and the platinum group elements, have led to fire assay becoming the predominant analysis technique. Significant drawbacks of fire assay include long turn-around times, limited absolute accuracy, high costs and requirement for skilled operating staff. For rapid measurement of gold samples, a technique that allows the gold content of large samples to be determined absolutely with high accuracy in less than two minutes using activation with high-energy X-rays has been developed. The method is non-destructive, has detection limits in the low ppb range, is capable of measuring slurries, ground or crushed solids with minimal preparation and can be made fully automatic. The largest surface coal mine in North America requires complex materials handling infrastructure to fulfil the highly variable quality specifications of its contracts. These diverse demands, reflected in the arrival of numerous customer trains every day, necessitate the integration of information in every stage of production. To meet this goal, quality measurement, train line-up and mine planning processes are being integrated into local and remote control rooms. The effectiveness of such a system can only be measured by comparing decisions that are made with, and without, each of the individual integrated control systems. Traditionally, mine controllers use their experience, intuition or a variety of trial-and-error spreadsheets to determine the ideal materials handling flows needed to achieve the correct quality. These balanced decisions are complex since many factors must be considered such as the mine plan, fleet costs, quality variability and others; consequently mine controllers usually have widely varying success between crews.An evaluation model was developed to assess the impact of a decision support system (DSS) integrated in a control room for controlling the coal blending process. To this end, an ARENA-based simulator representing the whole production process can be used to pull performance and current materials handling settings directly either from the real-time systems in the mine, or from historical data. In this way, the same shift (breakdowns, cycle rates, etc) can be simulated and performance compared. Different settings of the DSS, in terms of what information is displayed and the methods for doing so, can be tested for effectiveness. The historical data are extracted directly from a corporate data warehouse, without altering the everyday working databases. At the same time, the simulator writes its results back into the same data warehouse structure, allowing the same KPI reports to be used to measure simulated shifts.

The question of prediction and prevention of dynamic events û rock bursts (RB), tectonic rock burst (TRB) and mining-induced earthquakes (MIE), induced by large-scale mining, are discussed. The mine itself and the host geological environment are taken as a natural-technical system (NTS) whose evolution is characterised by alteration of the adaptation-bifurcation (catastrophes) periods. So, to predict TRB-MIE means to predict the limiting NTS states that are determined from the NTS geological monitoring data, and to prevent the said events means to control the processes of rock deformation and failure within the critical zone. The study considers particular examples of how TRB-MIE-events are predicted and prevented in apatite mines, Kola peninsula, Russia.

Olympic Dam Operation is located in the Stuart Shelf Geological Province approximately 520 km north-north-west of Adelaide in South Australia. It is estimated to be one of the worldÆs top five copper orebodies by size and the biggest single occurrence of uranium. The deposit was discovered by Western Mining Corporation in 1975. Exploration was based on a conceptual model for the formation of sediment hosted copper deposits together with gravity and magnetic anomalies.The capital cost of the current expansion is estimated to be A$ 1.64 billion. The underground expansion includes a total of 36 km of lateral development, a railway haulage system delivering ore from a series of ore passes to a new crusher station and a significant increase in ventilation capacity and mine services.In the current underground expansion the mining method will essentially remain unchanged. The ore handling system will incorporate some recent advances in technology, improving efficiency and safety standards.Major infrastructure excavations are designed by a team of engineers attached to the Olympic Dam Expansion Project and a number of consulting groups. Once the expansion is fully completed it is expected to increase the current annual underground production level from 3.4 Mt to 9.0 Mt of ore by the year 2000. Mine design engineers working for the Olympic Dam Operation have recently completed a three year final design plan to achieve this target.Access to the existing mine is through the decline and Whenan shaft. The Whenan shaft was originally sunk as an exploration access and later upgraded for hoisting. The 4 km long service decline connecting to the Whenan shaft was later constructed to accommodate the increase in service demand. The Robinson and Sir Lindsay Clark shafts were developed at later stages to cater for the hoisting during and following the expansion lead up.

Several types of drainage structure providecost-effective environmental controls for water supply to Charters Towers and its mining industry. Drainage groves maintain bank-levee, channel, pool, and spring structures. Failure of drainage structures leads to anoxic fermentation of channel fill releasing residues, such as arsenic, which would otherwise pass harmlesly by fixed on sedimentary particles.Experiments along drainage structures indicate that productive agroforestry could be integrated with expeditious development of groves to cope with environmental change.

This paper describes the new iron and steelmaking process recently commissioned at NZ Steel. Ironsand mined and concentrated at Waikato North head is slurry pumped 18 km to the company's Glenbrook works. Ironmaking includes the direct reduction process pioneered at Glenbrook in the 1970s and a new continuous electric melter. The molten, high carbon pig iron produced is then fed to a vanadium recovery unit and on to the KOBM oxygen steelmaking vessel. Steel is cast into billets or slabs. The new plant, which is the first stage of a fully integrated works at Glenbrook, raises New Zealand Steel's production capacity from 150 000 t/y to 750 000 t/y.

There is a growing demand for copper driven by its applications in renewable energy and electric vehicles. Sulfide ores are an important source of copper. Flotation is a critical front-end process used to remove gangue minerals and concentrate the copper minerals. The electrochemical activity of sulfide minerals contributes to their overall activity in the flotation pulp. The mineral rest potential dictates how collectors interact with the mineral surface, and hence ultimately on the flotation response. Dissolved oxygen, (DO), pH, redox potential (Eh) and water composition and ionic strength are also significant in controlling flotation performance. The aim of this investigation was to determine the influence of the electrochemical environment both during milling and flotation on the flotation behaviour of bornite and chalcocite. For this investigation, the interactions of collector with bornite and chalcocite were studied using synthetic plant water (SPW1) and deionised water (DIW) at 5 different pH levels. Sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) was used both in microflotation, collector adsorption and zeta potential tests.

Most publicity about the copper industry nowa- days is focused on the adequacy of ore reserves and on excessive mining capacity. These concerns, stemming from public awareness of actual and poten- tial shortages and oversupplies, relate to production rather than consumption. Perhaps the reason for this one-sided view is that copper is thought of as a commodity which is conspicuously traded in world markets, rather than as one of many industrial materials that serve today's rapidly changing tech- nology. Copper differs from other widely traded com- modities in that its real cost of production has pro- gressively increased since World War II. The reasons for the increase are identifiable by analyzing operations in one of the world's large producing centres, the copper province of Arizona. Another respect in which copper differs from some other com- modities is that increases in demand occur less auto- matically in the case of copper than they tend to in commodities whose consumption is more directly related to population growth. The copper industry's current inability to generate and attract needed investment capital is attributable to these differences between copper and other com- modities; it suggests that the concept of copper purely as a commodity is outdated. The key to the problem is better integration between the activities of copper producers and users. The KSS Lead Plant (Kivcet - SNAMPROGETTI - SAMIM) of Por tovesme, owned by Nuova Samim (the sector-head Company for non ferrous metals and derivatives owned by ENI), has been operating since february 1987. This plant is based on the Soviet Kivcet licence and testwork carried out on the pilot plant of VNIITSVETMET in Ust Kameno gorsk fed by the Nuova Samim's concentrates. The plant is com pletely automatized using the most advanced technologies and it is operated by nineteen people on shift work, including all ancillary units and lead decopperizing-casting. The expected performance of the plant has been confirmed and improves day by day in relation of the operating experience, thanks to the new conceptual design of the furnace. Due to the remarkable flexi bility of the process, the integration of the lead plant with the other plants of the metallurgical complex of Portovesme rro-#4 (Electrolytic Zinc Plant, Sulphuric Acid Plant, Imperial Smel ting) has shown all the economic advantages. The lead content in the ambient air, detected by the monitors, either in the working area and on the ground outside the complex, is widely Pb W" below the stricter new limits recommanded by the E.E.C. (Economic European Community) rules and by the Italian law. The whole process is carried out in equipment completely closed and under suction and it does not require manual operations with exposure to the lead. The production cost is much lower than that performed by the traditional technology. This advantage permits wide margin to consider investment to replace the traditional technology.

This paper explores the techniques and issues in the acquisition and analysis of mine production data for tactical decision making in production control. The use of information and operations management tools is presented in the context of block caving studies, with particular focus on the relationship between secondary breaking and LHD production performance.

"Due to the increasing amount of gangues in iron ores, a beneficiation process is required more as a preliminary step for ironmaking process. However, mechanical grinding and washing of iron ore needs tremendous effort that increases operating cost. Therefore, there is a necessity of a novel approach to ironmaking which can tolerate considerable amounts of silica or alumina. In the present study, a high alumina-carbon composite pellet was examined for an ironmaking process. The effect of compositional changes in the CaO-FexOy-Al2O3-SiO2 oxide system on the reduction of carbon composite pellets was investigated in a purpose built thermo-gravimetric analyser (TGA) at 1473K (1200¦C). As a result, alumina increased the reaction rate of carbon composite pellets by increasing surface area, while silica decreased the reaction rate by lowering surface area of samples. Infrared gas analysis assisted with the reaction kinetics of carbon composite pellets through measurement of CO and CO2 in off-gases. In Japan, evaluation of rock mass is crucial in mountain tunnels that are constructed using the NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method) to determine the support pattern that in turns determine the final support structure of the tunnel. The current evaluation method is highly dependent on the observations of on-site expert engineers that grades the rock mass in four levels across nine criteria: A. Condition of tunnel face. B. Condition of excavated surface. C. Compressive rock strength. D. Weathering. E. Spacing of discontinuity. F. Condition of discontinuity. G. Orientation of discontinuity. H. Spring water. I. Water degradation. However, in recent years, the number of said experts are decreasing rapidly due to labour shortage caused mainly by an aging population and declining birth rates. This is one of the biggest challenges that the construction sector currently faces, and this may affect the efficiency of tunnel construction projects in the future. Thus, this study proposes the implementation of a deep learning tool called the convolutional neural network (CNN) to quantitatively evaluate rock fractures on tunnel face. In addition, Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) is applied to visualise CNN, as well as verify the applicability of CNN to the evaluation of rock fractures. In other words, by creating heat maps of tunnel face images, CNN is utilised to evaluate rock mass in categories that are associated with discontinuities. The CNN model is most accurate when six convolution layers, four pooling layers, and three dense layers are used. This yields an accuracy of 75.0~88.0 per cent. Thus, the CNN model is verified to be feasible method to evaluate rock fractures.

A hydrometallurgical process was developed for recovery of copper from copper-lead matte formed as an intermediate product at the BHAS lead smelter at Port Pirie. A plant utilizing this process was commissioned in 1984. The leach step involves oxidation of the copper-lead matte in an oxygenated acidic chloride-sulphate leachant. The results of laboratory scale testwork from which the chemistry of leaching was deduced, are presented in this paper. The rate of recovery of copper to solution from copper-lead matte depends largely_on the availability of oxygen to the sulphide surface. The optimum leach temperature is approximately 85¦C. Free acid must be supplied according to the stoichiometry of the leach reaction: Cu1.91 S + PbS + 2.91 H2SO4 + 1.455 02 = 1.91 Cu2+ + 1.91 SOj- + PbSO4(s) + 2.91 H2O + S¦ The grind size of the matte is of minor significance. Chloride concentration in leachant should be at or above a minimum of 10.0 g/l. Chloride acts to complex cuprous ions formed during leaching.

The use of pipeline-c to carry crude'oil and petroleum pro-ducts is a reliable and economic*Way to transport large quantities of oil. The length and size of these pipelines have continued to grow throughout the world as the demand for petroleum has in-creased and as the price of other transportation-methods has risen. At the present time pipelines 'can move a barrel of oil a distance of 100 miles at an average cost of ,80.06 U.S. dollars.The major elements in pipeline design are discussed. Methods of calculating pressure drop and horsepower requirements are pre-sented. These are variations of standard equations.in which the elements of each equation are expressed in terms common to the petroleum industry. Major equipment is discussed., particularlyas it relates to operation and economics.Cost data are presented to aid in preliminary economic ana-lysis. Curves illustrate the cost of oil transportation at flow rates between 10,000 and 500,000 barrels per day and permit the selection of pipe diameter-which will result in minimum operating costs.

COPING WITH COMPLEXITY In every industry, and mining is no exception, plant and processes increase in complexity over time and managers and operators need correspondingly more knowledge. The mine manager has to delegate details to operators, engineers, metallurgists, accountants, safety specialists, personnel officers and the rest. Is it reasonable then, to expect the Mines Inspector to be competent to judge the conduct of all these operations against the criterion of the regulations? Obviously not, but what are the alternatives? One is a superficial inspection where the inspector goes on a hazard hunt for broken steps and missing handrails. Another is one in which an army of specialist inspectors marches on a mine, sometimes outnumbering the staff. Each is competent to assess some part of the operation and if he or she can find an opposite number among the mine staff, they can discuss details. But what good does it achieve? The system acts to remedy present defects and to make recommendations which, if only they were followed, would prevent the same things happening again. Given that this process has been going on since the first Factory Act of about 1840, how is it that there are any more defects left to put right? The answer of course is that defects keep appearing, and new defects arise as fast as the old ones are found and corrected. Further progress can only be made by preventing defects at their source.

With the burgeoning opportunities for new gold mines to be developed the opportunity now exists for a reassessment of the optimal processing path for these gold ores. Projects have traditionally followed the path of whole ore cyanidation with either Carbon In Pulp (CIP), Carbon In Leach (CIL) or Merrill Crowe. The challenge ahead is whether these traditional processing methods are the best option for stakeholders, or to go beyond CIP and use a combination of currently available technologies that can be used to provide gold recovery at a significantly reduced capital cost and minimal deleterious impact on the environment. Either stand alone or combinations of gravity concentration and flotation, can produce a gold bearing concentrate that can then be fed directly to a batch or continuous intensive cyanidation unit. Treatment of a gravity/flotation concentrate by intensive cyanidation may be processed by the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) developed by Gekko Systems of Australia. The advantages of the technology combining gravity/flotation followed by intensive cyanidation are significantly reduced capital costs; improved safety due to reduced cyanide inventories; the majority of tailings un-contaminated by cyanide; less energy required due to an opportunity for an increase in grind size û reducing green house gas emissions; detoxification of concentrate tailings can minimise tailings disposal and containment requirements.
