Abstract-Changes in the pore structure of hematite pellets during reduction to iron were investigated under a variety of experimental conditions. Pore structures were determined by a mercury penetration technique. The reduction temperature was found to be the major influence on structure, the pore system being bimodal below 750°C and unimodal above 900°C. Pore sizes ranging from 0.04 to 20 [um] were observed in completely metallized pellets produced over the temperature range 650-1050°C. Gas composition and reduction rates also influenced the pore structure of the metallized pellets, although to a lesser extent than the reduction temperature. An apparent activation energy of 24 kcal/mole was derived for the pore formation ptocess.

THE first copper stool used under an ingot mold to receive molten steel has recently been taken out of service after it had received ingots amounting to 6012 gross tons. This stool, weighing 8330 lb. had been in continuous service for 1822 heats since its installation. From this modest beginning the use of copper for ingot-mold stools grew to 425,000 lb. in 1934, with an additional 50,000 lb. of copper used in the form of inserts in cast-iron stools. During 1935 the quantity of copper used for stools increased by about 350,000 lb., making a total of 775,000 lb. now in use for that purpose. Copper used for inserts has increased during this time 180,000 lb., or over 350 per cent, to a total of 230,000 lb. The total of copper, therefore, in use at present under ingot molds is slightly over 1.000,000 lb.

THE winning of metals from Nature has been advanced to a degree of efficiency that commands admiration even in this Machine Age. Economy of human effort underground, in surface plants, and in treatment works, and better means of performing all manner of operations have cut costs and im¬proved products to an extent that seems far beyond the wildest imagin¬ings of those that labored in the days of hand mining and muscular metallurgy. Principles and methods borrowed from other professions and sciences - mechanical engineering, chemistry, and physics-all have con¬tributed to the rapid development of ore production and treatment, but no small part of the achievements must be credited to the free exchange of ideas within the industry itself and mass attack upon problems of mutual concern. The esprit de corps or class consciousness that has contributed so effectively to the progress of the metal industries has been less apparent among nonmetallic mineral producers. As a class they have been handicapped by inadequate contact with the metal-mining fraternity as well as among themselves.

FOR the diffusion of copper in silver-rich alloys, there have been only two previous investigations, that of Seith and Peretti in 1936, and that of Sawatzky and Jaumot2 in 1957. Seith and Peretti obtained a value of 24.8 keal per g-atom for the activation energy of diffusion whereas Sawatzky and Jaumot obtained a value of 46.1 keal per g-atom. Admittedly, Seith and Peretti used relatively high concentrations of 2 at. pet Cu and polycrystalline diffusion couples, while Sawatzky and Jaumot investigated tracer diffusion in single crystals of silver. The difference in the results, however, seems too large to attribute solely to solute concentration, as a change of over 20 keal per g-atom in the activation energy suggests a change in the mechanism of diffusion. Therefore, in the present investigation the diffusion coefficient for copper in polycrystalline Ag-2 at, pet Cu alloy is re-established using conventional sandwich-type diffusion couples and electron-probe microanalyses, and the results are compared with those of the previous studies. The diffusion couples were prepared from high-purity silver (99.999 pet) and high-purity copper (99.999 pet). The silver disks, 1/4 in. long and 4 in. in diam, were machined from an ingot which had been solidified in a dynamic vacuum of 10-3 mm of Hg to eliminate oxygen absorption which otherwise would result in copper oxide precipitation in the weld zone. The alloy disks of similar dimensions were machined from an alloy ingot (nominal composition 2 at. pet Cu) which had been unidirectionally solidified to obtain a predictable solute concentration,3 and homogenized for 1 week at 800°C. Sandwich diffusion couples were made by pressure welding an alloy disk between two silver disks in an induction heating coil. The couples were diffusion-annealed at temperatures of 800°, 756°, 699°, and 630°C in tube furnaces in which the temperature was controlled to better than ± l°C. The diffusion couples were examined metallographically for weld defects, and couples showing even minute defects at the weld interfaces were rejected. Concentration penetration curves were established using an A.R.L. Microprobe analyzer. CuKO radiation was counted and converted to concentration using 0.5 and 1.0 wt pet Cu chemically analyzed standards. Initially, four continuous profiles were obtained, and averaged to obtain the final diffusion curve. The initial analysis was performed commercially and the welds were not located with respect to the profile. Therefore, the results were rechecked by the authors using the Mellon Institute A.R.L. probe. One of the chief difficulties with which the operator of a coal washing plant has been forced to contend is the handling of the very fine coal. First he has the problem of separating the fine coal from washery water. This is usually accomplished by the use of settling cones or Dorr thickeners: in either event the separated fine coal contains a high amount (40 to 80 pct) of water and, somewhat loosely, dependent upon the size of the coal particles present, may be known as sludge or slurry. His second problem is the satisfactory further dewatering of such separated sludge and/or slurry.

The following experiments and researches were originally conducted by Dr. Heinrich Rcessler, chief of the German Gold and Silver Parting Establishment at Frankfort-on-the-Main, for the sole purpose of abating the nuisance created by the discharge into the air of the sulphurous and sulphuric acids generated in the process of parting bullion by sulphuric acid. The results achieved have, however, an important bearing not only on this process, but are of value in the manufacture of sulphuric acid and sulphate of copper from sulphurous gases derived from any source. It has now been in successful operation for a term of years at Dr. Roessler's own works, and has been lately introduced with satisfactory results at the royal mints of Kremnitz and Munich, and the well-known establishment of Johnson Mathey & Co., of London.

MANY factors govern the value of dredging-ground, and much capital can be wasted by the mistaken policy of contracting for the purchase of property and the installation of machinery before a thorough, examination has been made. To the uninitiated investor the presence of gold is generally the criterion,, and very superficial evidence is necessary to satisfy him as to this point. He considers the comprehensive report of a competent engineer as a wasteful extravagance and cannot understand why the engineer requires so much time and money to ascertain the information on which to base his conclusions, when the promoter can furnish him such pleasing and satisfactory data with but little expenditure of time and money. The uninitiated investor will often optimistically risk capital for purchase and equipment, and not until the venture comes to grief does he learn that the conditions are wholly unsuited for dredging. In many instances, a short preliminary examination by a competent engineer would have disclosed these facts. The mere presence of gold is by no means sufficient; some of the other factors necessary to be ascertained in determining the value of placer-ground for dredging-purposes are : (1) character and distribution of gold, and how much can economically be recovered; (2) character of bedding underlying the gravel, its contour, and whether its gold can be recovered by ordinary dredging-operations; (3) area and depths of gravel, surface contour, over-burden, water-level, proportion of fine material and boulders, and the presence of any material which might interfere with the dredging-operations and the recovery of the gold; (4) water-supply, power available, labor, transportation, and supplies, and cost of these ; (5) climatic condi-tions; (6) title to property, cost and royalties, and legal obstacles to carrying on dredging-operations. At a meeting of the Board of Directors, held Jan. 21, 1916, the following resolution was adopted: Resolved, that this Board has learned with indignation and sorrow of the unprovoked and brutal murder of 18 American citizens on January 10, in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, and laments especially the death of Messrs. C. R. Watson, C. A. Pringle, H. C. Hase, and W. J. Wallace, who were members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. As these men and their companies were engaged, in the lawful prosecution of their work, we trust that nothing will be allowed to prevent or delay appropriate action by our Government concerning the outrage by which they lost their lives;

This paper describes a computerized simulation system developed by KETRON, Inc., in cooperation with the US Bureau of Mines. The system is designed for use by mine managers and engineers rather than computer specialists and allows the novice user to arbitrarily create room-and-pillar mine plans, with the computer illustrating the simulation of face activities on a video screen. Extensive visibility of the simulation is provided by visual display of the machine elements and their movement in the section to accommodate the extraction, roof control, place changing, and haulage operations. Performance statistics are also generated to analyze the operations. Both conventional and continuous mining methods can be simulated. In addition to simulating arbitrary scenarios, the system can also be used to display actual time-studied operations and maintain a file of these activities. Practical applications and case studies are provided in the paper to demonstrate the usefulness of the system. The system is designed to operate on a desk-top mini computer and is currently installed on a Hewlett-Packard 9854B system with 450 K bytes of memory.

An extensive research program has been carried out at PCS Mining for some time into the use of high frequency microseismic emissions in the range of 30-200 kHz for roof fall warning in the mines. A laboratory investigation on loaded samples of potash has established a close correlation between acoustic emissions and the applied load. The tests also indicated the occurrence of the Kaiser effect. The positive and encouraging response from underground testing and controlled laboratory testing has lead to the extension of the investigation into correlation of the high frequency microseismic emissions and the change in stress distribution due to mining. Hydraulic borehole pressure cells were installed at different depths ahead of the advancing boring machine. The output due to the stress change and the microseismic event count was monitored by a continuous chart recorder. This paper discusses the results of this instrumentation. The results confirm the strong correlation between the two measured parameters and outlines future areas of research for the use of the high frequency microseismic emission techniques in quantifying the changes in stress distribution.

The mineralogy and geochemistry of Pennsylvanian shales and underclays were studied to determine their suitability for lightweight aggregate and refractory ladle brick. Eighty percent of the variation in bloating of shales and clays was explained by the variation of Si02, A1203, and fluxes (Fe203, MgO, CaO, Na20, and K20); 60% by variation in quartz, kaolinite, illite, and chlorite. The best bloating was exhibited by marine shales, whereas freshwater shales and underclays experienced little or no expansion. Regional paleogeographic maps o f Pottsville and Allegheny shales permit bloating to be geographically predicted. It was found that clays meeting the specifications for refractory ladle bricks were obtained from underclays having over 34.5% mica, over 40% kaolinite and less than 15% quartz. Underclays of this composition are confined to the lower Allegheney outcropping along the near-margins of the coal basin. The best clay is that underlying the Lower Kittanning coal. Porosity of the first fired brick was found to be inversely correlated with reheat expansion.

THE SOUTHWEST MINING SECTION of the National Safety. Council held a well attended two-day conference at Globe, Ariz., March 19 and 20; followed by two days of mine-rescue maneuvers at the Old Dominion mine in cooperation with the Globe-Miami District Mine Rescue and First Aid Association and the U. S. Bureau of Mines. C. L. Colburn of the Bureau had general charge of the arrangements and was chairman of the conference. All sessions were held in the Old Dominion Library. Toxic gases produced by the detonation of six explosives were measured in an underground hardrock metal mine during mining operations. The explosives included two semi-gelatin dynamites, three slurry explosives, and an ammonium nitrate, fuel-oil/ammonia dynamite combination. Explosives were detonated at the face of a drift and toxic gases produced by the detonation were trapped at the end of the drift by a bulkhead located a short distance away from the face. Toxic gas concentrations were then measured with direct readout instruments and together with the containment volume, the toxic gas volumes per mass of explosive were calculated. Toxic gas measurements were found in the following ranges (ft3/1bm): NO, 0.0100-0.035; N02, 0.003-0.019; CO, 0.08-0.30; SO2, 0.00-0.05; and CO2, 0.7-1.8. Results showed that toxic gas production (ft3/lbm) correlated with the densities (kg/m3) and energy densities (kJ/kg) of the explosives tested.

Man's material advance from one level of civilization to the next has involved the development of new, more useful tools and the utilization of energy greater than he alone could produce. These two essentials for material progress have developed at an ever increasing rate in the last century. While the first really successful use of mechanical energy derived from burning fuel was in James Watt's steam engine which pumped water from coal mines in Cornwall about 1770, there was still very little use of mechanical energy in mining by 1900 except for pumping and hoisting. Compressed air, having some of the characteristics of steam and which operated engines not unlike steam engines or steam hammers, powered the first attempts to mine coal with energy greater than human muscle could provide. When direct current-powered traction cars replaced horse-drawn transportation cars on city streets, it was natural that direct current locomotives should begin to replace animal and human power in mine haulage. Slowly, trolley and battery locomotives were developed and introduced. With d-c systems being established for haulage, it was natural that improved cutting machines should be developed and powered by d-c motors. Thus began the years of
