DUE to its location in the Atacama Desert, one of the most barren of the earth's surfaces, Chuquicamata's water supply presents unusual problems. Yearly rain-fall averages less than one tenth of an inch at the plant. However, there are summer showers above 12,000 ft in the Cordillera to the east, the resulting run-off flowing through old river valleys buried beneath more recent volcanic formations, to be impounded within sediment-filled basins. This water emerges at springs where the outlets of these basins are blocked by lava flows, and here are formed the small streams which feed the only important river of the region, the Rio Loa. Chuquicamata's water is obtained from these springs and rivulets. [ ] The map above indicates four pipe lines from which potable and industrial water are supplied. Potable water, amounting to 4500 metric tons per day, is conveyed in the Toconce pipe line from springs 59 miles due east of Chuquicamata. This water is used not only for drinking, but also for boilers and other needs requiring high quality. For industrial water at the oxide plant, there are two 12-in. pipe lines from the Rio San Pedro, carrying a total of 17,000 metric tons per day of slightly brackish water. This water is at present used mainly for leaching and for hygienic purposes. Water Source Found For the present and future needs of the sulphide plant, it was calculated that at least 32,000 metric tons per day of make-up water would be required. For this purpose, a pipe line of 44 miles length was constructed to bring in the entire flow of the Arroyo Salado, one of the eastern tributaries of the Loa. The salt content of this water is so high (over 5000 parts per million of solubles, mostly chlorides) that it is highly detrimental to farming, and the Chilean Government had been studying projects to separate these waters from others of the Loa system in order to improve agricultural conditions in the fertile valley of Calama. So it happened that the Government was willing to award rights to the Arroyo Salado waters under agreement whereby the Mining Company removes waters from the Rio Loa system above Calama for all time. The outlet of these waters, after serving their purpose at the new concentrator and leaving the plant in tailing, is the Salar de Talabre, an old salt lake which presents fully ten square miles of surface to serve as an evaporating pan, the outlets having now been blocked by dams. Here the dry climate of Chuquicamata is a favourable factor, evaporation averaging slightly above 1/4 in. per day. The Toconce and San Pedro pipe lines have been functioning from 26 to 34 years, and through the use of special cleaning tools which were developed at the plant, as well as deaeration of the more active Toconce water, these pipes are now maintained at capacities which do not diminish as years go on. Constructing the Dam The Arroyo Salado pipe line design and construction involved certain special and interesting features, and inasmuch as this line and its intake works are solely for the needs of the new sulphide plant, more detailed description is given. The waters are impounded at a gravity dam constructed of concrete to a height of 100 ft above the river bed, keyed into the precipitous Dacite walls of the narrow canyon (barely 6-ft wide at the bottom, only 25-ft width at 50 ft above). A small secondary dam was built 100 ft down stream from the main dam, providing a pool of 15-ft depth to protect the main structure from flood flows over the spill-way during the rainy season. A system of four 36-in. syphons was designed for discharging these flood waters from the lower depths of the lake, in order to avoid eventual sedimentation behind the dam. The lake has a length of 3300 ft, and its water level is controlled by an adjustable spillway permitting draw-down of eighty inches, amounting to 41,000 metric tons of available capacity. This regulation is necessary because of wide fluctuations in stream flow between day and night due to freezing of feeders. IN most applied sciences there are two distinct methods of carrying out research and development work. One of these, the theoretical, attempts to solve problems that may arise and to predict facts of practical importance by the application of the various laws of science, the other, the experimental method, attempts to each the 'same goal by obtaining data and trying out various processes in the laboratory. Since individuals frequently find themselves better adapted for one or the other type of procedure, it is natural that -two groups should 'arise, both working toward the sane objective but with somewhat different points of view, although many in each group are thoroughly competent in both fields. Metallurgy, in particular, offers an excellent opportunity for a comparison of the two methods.

I. INTRODUCTORY. IN the dry regions of the globe many silver-deposits display certain remarkable features which at the same time are so totally unlike anything met with among ore-bodies elsewhere, that they have long presented exceptional difficulties not only to a satisfactory explanation of their origin, but to economical milling. A most striking peculiarity of these ores is the haloid character of many of their bonanzas. To this fact more than to any other may be ascribed most of the unusual uncertainties of mining-operations in desert countries-the marvelous local richness of the ores under certain conditions and the often abrupt transition, to utter poverty; the inadequacy of ordinary prospecting customs and the constant devising of new exploratory methods; the unaccountable losses in smelting and the continual change in treatment-practice. For these anomalies certain climatic conditions seem to be chiefly responsible.

Because the activity coefficient of silicon dissolved in iron is influenced by the concentration of silicon as well as that of oxygen, the equilibrium constant K2 of reaction 2 becomes a function of metal composition, and, as shown in Fig. 1, a plot of log KP1 at 1600°C against the weight percent of silicon gives a smooth curve. For permanent structure underground, where rock is not competent, support usually consists of concrete or reinforced concrete. However, temporary supports in the form of timber or steel are often needed during construc-tion. Although the history of rock bolting is relatively short—50 years— their use has become widespread in general engineering construction as well as mining. This profusely illustrated and detailed study covers a broad range in the field of rock belting: from the behavior of rock and bolts including rock properties, masses, and structure; mathematical formulae for rock bolt applications; through analysis of various operations and descriptions of the bolts themselves. Rock construction is one of the oldest of the engineering arts and its origin is lost in antiquity. From the days when early man decided that he wanted to improve the natural caves which he was using for shelter and protection or made a river crossing by placing rocks to form a ford or causeway, we have had structures made of rock. It is not too much to say that rock in situ as a structural material forms part of every major engineering undertaking. Rock bolting is one means whereby the inherently good characteristics of rock in situ are preserved and used to the best advantage and the bad characteristics ameliorated. In many cases the latter are accentuated by construction processes used. Rock bolting, as with other rock construction techniques, is only just beginning to emerge from being an art. Consequently, its theory and practice is still more descriptive than mathematical. ROCK BOLTING In underground excavations, where the rock is not competent, support is provided. For the permanent structure, this generally consists of concrete or reinforced concrete. However, support may be needed during construction before the concrete can be placed, and conventionally this consists of timber or steel support in the form of ribs, struts, and lagging. Alternatively, rock bolts may be used. Although their use dates back over 50 years, it is only in recent years that rock bolts have become widely used, not only in mining but in general engineering construction. A rock bolt is a steel bar which is inserted in a hole drilled in rock. The end away from the rock face has a device which permits it to be firmly an- chored in the hole and the projecting end is fitted with a plate which bears against the rock surface. The bolt is placed in tension between the anchor and the plate, thereby exerting a compressive force on the rock. The essential feature of a rock bolt is that it is placed in tension. This distinguishes it from anchor bars which are grouted into holes in rock, but which are not prestressed. The difference between an anchor bar and a rock bolt when the rock bolt is grouted in is analogous to the difference between the reinforcement in ordinary reinforced concrete and in prestressed reinforced concrete. The view that rock bolts only pin or nail blocks or slabs of rock which are loose to the sounder rock behind them is erroneous. Rock bolts are useful for this purpose and have been so used for a long time. However, the term rock bolting, as used here, means the designed use of rock bolts to reinforce and develop the rock around an excavation into a structural entity which can competently play its part in a structure such as a powerhouse or a mine installation. Rock bolts behave quite differently than steel ribs. They can be installed at the working face directly after blasting and within a short space of time can be exerting a stabilizing pressure on the loosened rock surface. This early installation not only partially restores loosened blocks of rock to their original unloosened positions, but also it prevents the gradual relaxation or loosening of the decompression zone behind the new rock face. In contrast, steel ribs generally use timber blocks, wedges, and lagging between the ribs and the irregular rock surface. The timber is relatively compressible, and loosened blocks of rock must move outwards an appreciable distance before any load builds up on the steel ribs. Also, the ribs may settle as the foot blocks and foundation become compressed. Hence, it may take several days or weeks before the rock has moved sufficiently to make the steel ribs carry an effective load.

DURING the war years restrictions on travel, pressure of work, and the irregular arrival of technical literature from abroad combined to severely isolate Great Britain in a period of intense war expansion of the art and practice of mineral dressing. Many British technicians were fully occupied with the day-to-day problems of improvising substitutes as regular sources of supply failed. and with mastering the strange demands and working conditions of wartime. After a long day spent between ones laboratory and production work, the rest of the waking hours were often filled with fire watching or home guard patrol activities, substituting for a night-shift manager, or "resting" in a dugout while the bombs came down. There was no time for serious study of such technical literature as survived the Atlantic crossing.

IN recent years considerable interest has been shown in surface-alloyed metals, particularly those of chromium (chromized steels), which have excellent corrosion [ ] resistance under a variety of severe conditions, and may undergo bending and flanging operations without spalling. An early method1 employed to produce a high-chromium case on steel was developed by Kelley in 1921. It consisted of heating a low-carbon steel in intimate contact with powdered chromium in the presence of hydrogen at temperatures sufficiently high to permit diffusion of chromium into the steel. The usefulness of this process was limited because the extremely high temperatures of 1200° to 1400°C. (2200° to 2550°°F,) caused excessive grain growth and warpage, Louenstein and Ulmer2 packed iron castings in ferrochromium and com- [ ] mon salt, and heated for approximately three hours at 930° to 1040°C. (1700° to 1900°F,). A recent and more practical method of depositing chromium on steel surfaces has been developed in Germany by Daeves, Becker and Steinberg3-8 and in Russia by Izgaryshev and Sarkisov.9 This process consists of passing gaseous chromium chloride over the steel to be chromized at temperatures of 900° to 1000°C., or packing them in a porous, ceramic material that previously had been saturated with chromium chloride. BERYLLIUM is demanding more of the limelight, and the output of beryllium copper (containing 2% to~ 3 per cent of beryllium) seems to have grown 60 per cent above that of 1936, which was double that of 1935. There is increasing interest in beryllium-aluminum alloys and small quantities are being marketed at $50 per lb. for the contained beryllium. Other alloys also can be produced. Further price decreases for beryllium copper (now $23 per lb. for the contained beryllium) seem , possible and desirable. No difficulty has been experienced in obtaining beryl and a 'reserve stock has been built up. One supplier heretofore found reliable has offered to furnish 200 tons per month. The treatment of silver-ores of too low a grade to justify either smelting or preliminary roasting, and yet not " free" enough to permit of raw amalgamation, has ever been a serious problem. The coal industry had another prosperous year in 1966. Since the turn of the decade, production has been climbing at an average rate of 6% per annum. Although the fast pace slackened somewhat, 1966 production showed a gain of almost 3 % over that of 1965. An impressive record can be drawn from the fact that output per man-day in 1966 was more than twice that of the early 1950's, and more than three times that of the early 1940's. And even though man-power requirements lessened, those men retained by the industry worked longer hours and benefited through higher hourly pay rates. However, cost to the customer increased a little. Such statements can only be made for a healthy industry -one that is constantly improving its efficiency. Coal currently provides more than 25% of the total U.S. energy output. About 50% of all U.S.- mined bituminous coal goes directly to the electric utility market. It should be noted that, now, well over one trillion kwh of electricity is generated annually. Dependence of the giant electric utility industry on coal is based on economy and an abundant, dependable supply of this fuel.
