Specimens of Inconel-X alloy solution-treated at 2050°F and aged for periods of 1, 10, 100, and 1000 hr at 1200°, 1400°, and 1600°F have been examined by electron microscopy and by electron and X-ray diffraction. Four minor phases were identified: titanium nitride, niobium nitride, an M23C6 complex carbide, and the intermetallic ? phase. The two nitrides were found in all of the aged specimens and in the solution-treated alloy, the y' phase formed at all aging temperatures, while the M23C6 carbide formed only on aging at 1200° and 1400°F. Variations in the hardness, rupture strength, creep strength, and yield strength of the alloy have been shown to be related to variation in the size and distribution of the particles of the y' phase within the matrix grains of the alloy, with maximum values of these properties occurring when there is a maximum amount of the phase present and a fine state of dispersion of the particles prevails. THE nickel-chromium alloys containing titanium and aluminum are widely used in applications requiring high strength at elevated temperatures. Studies on relatively simple ternary and quaternary alloys'-4 have indicated that the favorable high-temperature properties of these alloys are related to the precipitation of an intermetallic ?'-phase having a structure based On that of the Ni3A1 phase of the nickel-aluminum system. The present investigation was undertaken to identify the minor phases and to study the microstructural changes occurring in one of the more complex commercial alloys as a result of aging in the service temperature range, with particular emphasis on investigating the role of the ?' -phase. The microstructural changes were studied by electron microscopy and the minor phases were identified by X-ray and electron diffraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS Inconel-X alloy was selected for this investigation because the previous studies of Frey, Freeman, and white6 provided extensive information on the variations in metallurgical properties of this alloy resulting from high-temperature aging treatments. Specimens aged 1, 10, 100, and 1000 hr at 1200°, 1400°, and 1600°F were made available for the present use. These were taken from 1-in. round-bar stock of a commercial heat having the following weight composition: 0.04 C, 0.56 Mn, 6.59 Fe, 0.007 S, 0.38 Si, 0.03 Cu, 73.22 Ni, 14.97 Cr, 0.78 Al, 2.38 Ti, and 1-02 Nb. They were solutjon-treated at 2050 for 4 hr and then water-quenched prior to aging. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained from insoluble minor phases which were separated from the alloys by digestion in the reagent of Mahla and Nielsen.6 Back-reflection patterns were obtained from electrolytically polished surfaces of the bulk search to detect the ?'-phase' Cu-K a radiation was used in both cases. With the advent of water-flooding into active commercial usage in half a dozen areas in the Mid-Continent, the process passes the experimental stage and joins other methods and processes now in use which have been found suitable in one oil field or another in securing a more profitable production than has existed heretofore. The use of the air-gas lift, acidization, pressure maintenance and repressuring have presented their problems in economics and engineering during their introduction and extended application. When a new field is discovered or attention is turned to an old producing area in which these methods have not been considered, it is to be expected that these problems again arise. While some information is available as to the results obtained by water-flooding in a few localities in the Mid-Continent, the extrapolation of the sand data on which the results are based, for even generalized use in other areas and fields in the region, is hazardous. It is precarious to assume that the same physical condition will obtain in a sand over more than small, special areas. This paper is concerned with a brief presentation of such data as are available to the authors on existing operations, a survey of the region and extent to which application of the method seems most likely to be made, an estimation of the crude reserve existing for such operations, suggestions as to the importance of core analysis in guarding against uncontrolled floods and its usefulness in predicting ultimate recoveries, and comment on some of the economic phases involved. These subjects, as concerned with water-flooding in the East (notably Bradford, Pennsylvania), have been discussed in detail in the literature and are generally well known. Especially is this true of discussions of the mechanical equipment and various lease layouts and development patterns for water-flooding.

INTRODUCTION Washability characteristics derived from float-and-sink analysis in Chapter 4 demonstrate that coal is intrinsically heterogeneous, and this heterogeneity is also evident in the proximate, ultimate, and size analyses. A range of particles from high to low specific gravity is usually seen in the run-of-mine coal. One objective of coal preparation is to recover the high quality float material (the particles of lower specific gravity) such that the recovered product meets certain quality specifications, as well as to reject or recycle low quality particles of higher specific gravity. The maximum recovery of cleaned coal at the required quality is of major concern to plant operators. However, the quantity and quality of products of coal cleaning, determined in the operation of actual commercial cleaning plants and by theoretical calculation based on run-of-mine washability studies, are known to be different with each coal. Therefore, during the last half century, coal preparation engineers have repeatedly sought methods to predict the technical and economical efficiency of separation of cleaning equipment and systems. Many formulas have been proposed by international investigators to evaluate the efficiency of various coal cleaning operations, primarily based on the yield and/or ash of the various products of coal cleaning. Performance criteria in use today are capable of defining all of the important aspects of a given concentrating operation; however each criterion has certain restrictions or limitations. It is important, therefore, to understand how such formulas can be used and the problems involved in their construction. PUBLIC lands in Florida were first withdrawn from entry by President Taft on July 2, 1910, as a conservation measure because of their possible phosphate content. The reserve thus established was subsequently modified by further withdrawals and by restorations, so that on Jan. 1, 1934,' it contained 66,796 acres, of which only a small part had been defi-nitely classified. The reserved land was in scattered parcels, ranging from less than 40 acres to 320 or more, distributed in many counties. For administrative purposes and for final disposal of any of the numerous parcels, mineral classification of the land is legally necessary. In 1934 and 1935 the United States Geological Survey, under two successive grants from the Public Works Administration, prospected some 83 tracts of these lands in Polk County, comprising in all about 3300 acres, and six tracts comprising 240 acres in Citrus and Marion Counties. The tracts in Polk County were all in the so-called land-pebble field and the others in the hard-rock field. The Survey field party was under the direction of P. V. Roundy, from whose unpublished report the material in this paper is largely taken. The foreman of the prospecting crew was J. H. Wingate of Zephyrhills, Fla. The individual tracts were identified through the cooperation of the General Land Office, by transitman Hugh B. Crawford. This prospecting work fitted well the classification adopted for Public Works projects in general: it could not he done on any considerable scale under the Survey's usual appropriations; it gave employment to unem-ployed labor; and it may be expected ultimately to repay the Government in royalties more than the cost of the exploration.

The desirability of employing the centigrade scale for the measurement of temperatures is becoming more and more recognized in this country, particularly in view of the fact that this scale is used almost exclusively in technical papers and publications—exclusively in those published in French or German. There are, however, a large number of factories and laboratories which still employ the Fahrenheit scale. It therefore frequently becomes necessary to convert one into the other and the accompanying chart (Fig. I) has been found very convenient for this purpose. WHAT information do you have on precision investment casting? Please send me all available information on the removal of paraffin from oil wells and pipe lines. How can I find out how to remove magnesium oxide from lime? I want a good book on the pickling of steel. Can liquid oxygen be used as an explosive in a mine? Where can I get a bibliography on the plasticity of metals? These questions, selected from the scores of questions asked the Engineering Societies Library staff every day, indicate some of the diversity of the requests received. The samples chosen relate to interests of AIME members but the questions that come to the Library by mail, telephone, telegraph, and in person cover all fields of engineering, science, and technology. Some questions can be answered quickly; others require extensive searching. Those that can be answered in a few minutes or ten, twenty, or even thirty minutes are usually done without charge. For the more difficult questions a charge is made. In this way those requiring considerable service pay for it and the Library finds it possible to serve more persons.

The No. 4 I.S.F. Smelter Complex at the Avonmouth Works of Imperial Smelting Corporation (N.S.C.) Limited commenced operation at the beginning of 1968. The furnace rating is 120,000 tons zinc and 40,000 tons lead per annum. Zinc and lead concentrates are unloaded onto a 1,000 tons per hour capacity conveyor belt and automatically weighed and sampled before receipt into a 48,000 ton capacity raw material store. Distribution is by a reversible boom stacker into 16 x 3,000 ton bays and recovery is by a front end loader. Materials are fed to 16 proportioning bins for feeding via continuous weigh feeders to a 132 square metre effective updraught area sinter machine with a material flow rate of 240 tons per hour over the machine. The required quantity of output lump sinter at up to 800ºC is fed to 2 x 600 ton storage bins on the I.S.F. plant. By-product SO2 rich gas is fed to a conventional wet gas single stream acid plant rated at 600 tons per day utilizing a dry N.T.P. gas volume of 100,000 cubic metres per hour. The hot sinter and preheated coke (800ºC) are automatically neighed and charged to a 27.3m2 shaft area I.S.F. fitted with 2 x 5.5 m. wide lead splash condensers. Grade 4 zinc is tapped and transferred to the zinc refinery. Conventional type lead bullion and slag are tapped from the bottom of the furnace through a separation forehearth. The refinery consists of 6 lead and 3 cadmium columns to produce some 52,000 tons per annum of S.H.G. metal. S.H.G. metal and Grade 4 metal is cast into various shapes as required.

The relationship between crystalline texture and magnetic anisotropy in a Co-10 pct Fe alloy has been investigated by means of X-ray pole .figures, hysteresis-loop tracings, and magnetic-torque measurements. The cold-rolled texture of a sample after 95 pct thickness reduction is of the "brass-type", that is, (110)[112/. At 500°C the cold-rolled material recrystallizes fo a (311)[112] orientation, plus a minor (210) [001] component. This texture persists up to 1400°C, at which point it is replaced by a secondary recrystallization texture, (111)[112]. Magnetic-torque measurements show that the easy axis of magnetization lies along the transverse direction in the cold-rolled material and changes to the rolling direction after primary recrystallization. This change is also reflected in the hysteresis characteristic; whereas the B-H loop along the rolling direction is nonsqunre with a low value of residual induction (750 vs 19,000 gauss at saturation) for the cold-rolled material, the annealed sample exhibits a very square loop with a large value of residual induction (16,000 gauss). Theoretical torque curves calculated from the texture data on the basis of magnetocystalline anisotropy energy compare favorably with the observed torque curves. Values of the crystal anisotropy constant, K1, obbained from these comparisons are in good quantitative agreement with single-crystal data. Furthermore, both the torque amplitude of the poly crystalline material and the magnitude of K1 obtained with a single crystal show an identical temperature dependence over the range from —195° 10 +220°C. It is thus conclzided that the magnetocrystalline anisotrpopy erlergy is chiefly I-esponsible. for the nzagnetic allisotropy of textured Co-10 pct Fe alloy. THE results of a study on the relationship between crystalline texture and magnetic anisotropy of an alloy containing 90 pct Co and 10 pct Fe by weight are reported in this paper. The alloy has an fcc structure: a saturation magnetization of about 19,000 gauss,2 and a nearly zero value of magnetoatriction.3 puzey4 has reported a large crystalline anisotropy constant of -7.4 X 105 ergs per cu cm, indicating the (111) directions as the easy axes of magnetization. Hence, texture variations resulting from cold work and annealing are expected to introduce a magnetic anisotropy in the polycrystalline material through the alignment of these (111) easy directions. In the present study, magnetic anisotropy of both rolled and annealed strips was determined by magnetic-torque measurements and hysteresis-loop tracings The results were correlated quantitatively with calculations based on texture data obtained by the X-ray pole-figure technique. It is established that the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy is indeed chiefly responsible for the magnetic anisotropy of textured Co-10 pct Fe alloy. EXPERIMENTAL Material Preparation. The alloy nominally contained 90 pct Co, 9.5 pct Fe, and 0.5 pct Mn by weight, the chief impurities being nickel, carbon, and silicon (less than 0.5 pct total). The cast ingot was rolled to strips 10 mils thick and slit to 1 in. in width. After strand annealing at 900°C in a hydrogen atmosphere, these strips were further cold-rolled to various thicknesses down to 0.25 mil (97.5 pct reduction), with samples collected for study of the development of texture and magnetic anisotropy as a function of thickness reduction. subsequently, samples cold-rolled from 100 mils to 0.25 mil were obtained, thus extending the thickness reduction range to 99.75 pct. At Ithaca Peak, one of three peaks situated on Duval Corporation's Mineral Park property, a 'Single pulse of quartz monzonite magma intruded the isoclinally folded Precambrian Cerbat complex consisting of schist, quartzfeldspar gneiss, and amphibolite. The magma reacted with the Precambrian rocks, yielding a quartz-diorite rim. As the magma crystallized within the rim, it produced, progressing in'ward, annular bodies of quartz monzonite porphyry, quartz porphyry, and a distinctive quartz porphyry containing abundant podiform, tabular, and irregular quartz masses. These quartz masses are spatially associated with discontinuous crenulate and tabular quartz veinlets. Following crystallization, the Ithaca Peak stock and part of the surrounding Cerbat complex were fractured, producing a stockwork of predominantly northwest and northeast-trending fractures. The stockwork was then mineralized during a period of decreasing temperature by: ( 1) quartz-pyritechalcopyrite veinlets without distinct selvages and with distinct alteration envelopes in which orthoclase was altered to quartz and sericite; (2) quartz-pyrite-chalcopyrite veins and veinlets with distinct selvages and without distinct alteration envelopes; and (3) pyrite-chalcopyrite- galena-sphalerite veins. The Ithaca Peak stock was pervasively sericitized or argillized. The Mineral Park property is surrounded by a zone of propylitization Alteration and mineralization are coextensive in space and were, at least in part, coincident in time. The Mineral Park property possibly was elevated and exposed twice prior to its present exposure. The protore has been enriched by a factor of three. The Ithaca Peak supergene ore body is conformable with present topography and lies above the present water table. The shape of the ore body was controlled by erosion and oxidation of the previously enriched mineralization. Hematite, goethite, and jarosite present at the surface indicate a high primary pyrite environment, but it is possible to recognize that a small proportion of veins and veinlets contained greater amounts of chalcocite and chalcopyrite than pyrite. The igneous facies on Ithaca Peak are the products of differentiation within a solidifying rim according to Bowen's Reaction series. The innermost facies contain more quartz and orthoclase than the outer facies. Late magmatic quartz in the case of Ithaca Peak contains small amounts of pyrite and molybdenite. It is suggested that this quartz-sulfide mineralization, may also have been the product of differentiation the product of differentiation, may indicate that the later hydrothermal mineralization may also have been the product of differentiation.

The marketing of nonferrous metals and of the ores and concentrates from which these metals are recovered is a fascinating trade, international in character, sensitive to every change in the economic tide, and complex in its organization. Each individual metal has its own marketing mechanism; no two are exactly alike. The differences sometimes are a matter of tradition rather than of necessity, but usually they have developed because of the very nature of the problems of producing or consuming the individual metal. This description, because of limitations of space, can do no more than indicate the major aspects of the trade and touch lightly on the marketing structure of each metal. The dictionary states that a market is a "meeting of people for selling and buying." In the case of nonferrous metals this meeting may occur on a half-dozen different occasions between the time the ore has been first mined and the time the refined metal is available for use by industry; or it may not occur at all until after the metal itself has been rolled, drawn, stamped, cast, or forged into a useful semifabricated shape. To illustrate: A Chilean miner may sell his small ore production to a custom mill, which produces concentrates that are sold to an ore dealer, who finances shipments of the concentrate to a custom smelter, which buys them for conversion into blister, to be subsequently refined into electrolytic copper (sometimes by a refinery having no corporate ties with the custom smelter) and sold. Conversely, aluminum production is mostly by integrated concerns that mine bauxite, convert it to alumina, smelt that to produce aluminum, and then fabricate that into semifinished or even finished products before title to the material changes hands for the first time. Some nonferrous ores are not converted into metal at all but are sold by the miners or dealers directly to the ultimate consumers. A good example would be chrome ores used by the chemical industry. And of course a substantial part of the commerce in nonferrous metals is in scrap, which is the reconversion into useful form of metals that have long since been mined and smelted. IN 1947 the mining industry strove desperately to regain operating normalcy. During the first part of the year the industry in this country was plagued with labor shortages, strikes, and portal-to-portal lawsuits. Then followed the uncertainty of Government policy with respect to subsidies and tariffs; and the long and bitter controversy as to whether we are a nation of mineral "haves" or "have-nots." As the year progressed the labor supply impoved somewhat and the Taft-Hartley law brought partial relief to strike-troubled industry. The uncertainty with respect to tariffs was partly answered by President Truman on April 29 when he announced the suspension of the 4¢ import duty on copper until March 31, 1949, and later, near the close of the year, by the announcement of the tariff agreement signed by the United Nations at Geneva. By this agreement tariff rates are to be adjusted downward, or "bound" at their present levels, for three years, on commodities amounting to some 60 per cent of United States trade. Effective Jan. 1, 1948 the rate of duty will be substantially reduced on ores, concentrates, or metals of zinc, aluminum, copper, manganese, tungsten, iron, steel, barytes, nickel, cadmium, and antimony.

The competitive position of producers of industrial minerals depends upon the delivered price of their product. Freight charges are a major factor in the sales to consumers. A comparison of freight rates on movements of limestone and silica rock in the Pacific Northwest shows a wide variance in mills per ton mile for like hauls, thereby favoring some localities over others.

In the quantitative interpretation of the SP logs, the electrochemical component is generally taken equal to — K log Rm /Rw where K has the theoretical value corresponding to solutions of pure sodium chloride. This method may be misleading when relatively large quantities of salts other than NaCl are present in form-rrtion waters—as is generally the case for low salinities —or in gyp-base muds. In such cases recourse is made in the field to changing the K value or to adding a correction term to the equation on the basis of local experience. An investigation has been made in the laboratory of the influence of HCO3, SO4=, Ca++, and Mg++ on the amplitude of the SP deflection, which included in par-ricular determinations of the activity coefficients of Ca++ and Mg++. The theory, the experimental techniques and a tentative method for applying the results are described. So far, applications to actual field cases where chemical analyses of waters were available have provided an excellent confirmation of the proposed method. The case of the SP in very salty brines is also considered and it is shown that the use of activity data for sodium gives satisfactory results. HISTORICAL In early times of electrical logging, the SP curve was used exclusively as a tool for the location of permeable beds and the definition of their boundaries. Later, with the introduction of methods of quantitative analysis, attention was called to the possibility of deriving from the SP log some information on the formation water resistivity, which constitutes one essential element for the computation of water saturation from log data. The first laboratory experiments' in 1932 had shown that, as a result of electrochemical phenomena arising at the contact of the niud and the formation, the amplitude of the deflection of the SP curve was, at least partly, a function of the salt concentration of interstitial water and accordingly of its resistivity. It was indicated that the amplitude of the electrochemical component of the SP should be equal to K log R1/R2, R1 and R2 being the resistivities of the mud and of the formation water respectively. However, the exact value of the K coefficient was not determined at that time because the surface clay used for a laboratory model was far from an ideal shale membrane. Consequently, the way was not yet open towards quantitative interpretation. In the early forties, Tixier reported2, on the basis of field log observations, the following equation for the case of NaCl solutions, SP = -71 log f1c1/f2c2, c1 and c2 being the concentrations and f1, f2 the mean activity coefficients. The local variations observed in the empirical values of K, chiefly in the Rocky Mountains, led him to advance the opinion that, besides the relative amounts, the nature of the salts present in the solutions had a bearing on the magnitude of the SP. At about the same time Mounce and Rust- ad published laboratory results which emphasized the part played by the shale in the generation of the SP. On the basis of laboratory tests and theoretical considerations, Wyllie in 1948' published the following equation of the electrochemical SP for the case of NaCl solutions, SP= - 71 log (a1)m/(a2)m

RECENTLY a prominent Brazilian' doctor wrote to an American friend: "I feel that cultural relations between the American and Brazilian people could be promoted in a very speedy and effective way by establishing contacts between men of the same professions. . . . A Brazilian mechanical engineer could be immediately interested in relations with American colleagues, even if he had never heard of Longfellow and was not interested in Stokowski's orchestra. . . . A large number of cultural ties could be established between specific groups of men who have already some common interest, and who, whenever they meet, can do something that naturally brings them closer, that is, `talk shop."' In appointing a committee on Inter-American Engineering Relations to cooperate with the Department of State in its program of fostering cultural relations with the other republics of this hemisphere, the American Engineering Council has taken a step which should lead to a greater sense of unity and fraternity among engineers of the Americas. That such unity and fraternity are part and parcel of the moral defense of the hemisphere is obvious. For years engineers of the United States have been traveling South and South-east to construct roads and bridges, dam rivers, harness waterfalls, build ports, install and operate mining equipment, and erect buildings and plants, often at the risk of life. Those in the teaching profession in this country have had as pupils a growing number of students from our neighboring republics whom they have sent back home trained in the most efficient engineering methods. In a sense, however, these relations with the other nations on this side of the globe have been haphazard and left to chance. Personal acquaintance among engineers has played its role but no organized attempt appears to have been made to take advantage of the natural relationship which geographical and historical factors should encourage.
