MINERAL production in almost all European countries suffered a sharp setback because of the war. Plants were damaged, transportation facilities disrupted, and labor dispersed and demoralized. Since the war, due to lack of confidence and economic stability, there has been little incentive to rebuild and expand the mineral industries even though a big demand at high prices exists for mineral products. Most mining and metallurgical companies in Europe hesitate to invest their capital because of the tendency towards nationalizing industry, high taxes, and low output of labor, as well as the deficiency of mine supplies and equipment within their countries. In short, they do not have faith in the future, and for these same reasons and fears most of the mining companies in America will not risk capital investment in Europe. In Europe, including the United Kingdom, free enterprise has been losing ground and as a result the foundation of their economic welfare is being undermined. American mining interests willing to take the initiative could help in counteracting this influence if a way were found for them to co-operate with the European producer without too great a risk.

PURE copper that has been allowed to oxidize at an elevated tempera-ture in the air is found to be covered with two distinguishable layers of oxide scale. The outer of these, which is very thin, is composed of cupric oxide, while the inner layer, comprising the bulk of the scale, is made up chiefly of cuprous oxide (Fig. 1a). If a small quantity of an alloying element, such as silicon, is present in the copper, silica particles are found disseminated through the cuprous oxide, deposited most abundantly near the metal surface, and, in addition, silica particles occur to a limited depth within the copper itself (Fig. 1b). It is this inner layer, composed of oxide particles precipitated in a matrix of metallic copper that is known as the "subscale" or the zone of internal oxidation. Under a low oxygen pressure it is possible to produce the subscale without the formation of external layers of copper oxides, thus leaving the metal surface bright and apparently clean while oxidation has occurred, in fact, to a considerable depth within the metal (Fig. 2). Although little is yet known in a detailed way of the mechanism of internal oxidation, the general nature of the process is evident. By virtue of the considerable solubility of oxygen in copper,1 it is possible to bring the alloying element in contact with oxygen within the metallic solid solution. If the oxide of the alloying element is more stable than cuprous oxide, the foreign oxide may form and, since most oxides are relatively insoluble in copper, it will not long remain in solution, but will separate as a precipitate. As the metallic solute is exhausted in the zone of precipitation, oxygen that is constantly being supplied at the surface diffuses farther into the alloy and thus produces an ever-thickening shell of subscale. The distribution of the reacting elements in the subscale and adjoining zones must be somewhat as indicated in Fig. 3. The conditions requisite to internal oxidation to be anticipated are thus: (1) a solubility of oxygen in the alloy, (2) the ability of oxygen to diffuse at an appreciable rate into the alloy, (3) the possibility of the

GROWING use of basic slag in the agricultural industry is of special interest and importance to the iron and steel industry of the Birmingham district, providing an increasing outlet for this by- product. Such use of basic slag was first developed in England about fifty years ago where it soon became wide- spread. About twenty years ago the Tennessee Coal, Iron & R. R. Co. began its production in the United States after exhaustive tests had demonstrated its high value here as in Eng- land. It is particularly valuable on heavy clay and acid soils, improving their physical condition, increasing their alkalinity where that is desirable, and providing soluble phosphate and small amounts of manganese to soils deficient in these respects. Its use in agriculture is growing as its advantages are becoming more widely known.

The metals Cd, ,Wg-, Sn, TI, Zn, and Zr reach a peak hardness after a criticfir1 deformation by rolling- and then soften with fwther rolling-, thereby exhibiting wovk softening. Optical metallography on Cd, Mg, and Zn shows that work softening is accompanied by a change in grain size occurring during deformation. The creep of zinc from -1l° to +60°C at stresses in the range of 7.9 to 17.3 kg per sq mm is given by € = e0 -t- Bt + Kt +at6. The third and second rate constcints are related by the equation a = K~ K6 and their stress and temperature dependence can be represented by the equations K = A, . exp - (u, - Bu)/kT. A model based upon the stress activated glide of sub-boundaries is proposed which qualitatively accounts for the metallog-raphic observations. Expressions, which are in reasonable quantitative agreement with the ex-pe~inzental observations, are derived for the creep of zinc. THE term "work softening" has been used previously by Polakowski1 and by Cottrell and stokes2 to describe phenomena where further strain of a deformed material leads to a decrease in flow stress. In both cases, however, the conditions were changed for the second straining. Here, the term "work softening" is intended to refer to a decrease in flow stress after continued straining in the same direction at the same temperature: work softening is the antithesis of "work hardening". Work softening of zinc was reported by chadwick3 and in discussion of that paper Jenkins4 indicated that cadmium also work softens. More recently work softening has been reported5 in two magnesium alloys, -99.5 pct Mg. Chadwick found that the hardness, 0.2 pct Proof Stress and the UTS of electrolytic zinc all increased with progressive cold reductions up to 30 pct and then progressively decreased with further rolling. Gay and Kelly6 used a back-reflection X-ray technique to study the effect of cold rolling zinc and found that although deformations greater than 2 to 5 pct reduction in thickness produced some recrystallized grains, deformations greater than 40 pct caused com-plete spontaneous recrystallization. At deformations greater than 60 pct the material was found to consist solely of recrystallized grains, -20 pm diam, the size of which decreased with increasing reduction and was much less than the initial grain size of the annealed material (-300 pm diam). Similar results were also reported for cadmium, tin, and lead.6 Gay, Hirsch, and Kelly' suggest that these experiments indicate recrys-tallization takes place when the dislocation density exceeds a certain value. However, no measurements of MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The purity of the metals used in this work is indicated by the following figures: Zn (99.99); Cd (99.94); Mg (99.95); T1 (99.99). The zirconium was iodide crys tal bar with a probable purity of about 98 pct. The metals were obtained in the form of 0.25 in. thick strip or 0.425 in. diam rod by various fabrication methods and then annealed to ensure complete re-crystallization. Hardness-deformation curves were obtained at room temperature by rolling 4 in. thick strip under conditions which left a surface adequate for diamond pyramid hardness tests immediately after rolling. The hardness was taken as the niean of five impressions made using a 5 kg load and the time elapsing between rolling and making the last impression never exceeded 5 min. The zinc specimens for creep testing were from 3 by 3 by 4 in. cast slabs which were rolled to 0.10 in. thickness starting at 350°C and finishing cold. The resulting strip was cut into pieces 1 in. wide and annealed in batches. With suitable choices of annealing temperature between 100" arid 400°C five different grain sizes varying from 4.54 x 10' to 3.03 x l05 grains per sq cm (530 to 20 um diam) were obtained. Creep tests were done in compression using a sub-press, based on a design after Ford,8 in which the strip is compressed between dies 0.100 in. wide under conditions of plane strain. Since there is no lateral spread of the material, the area of contact between the dies and strip remains constant throughout the test and the application of a constant load, using the load maintaining device of a hydraulic testing machine, resulted in a constant stress. Covering the dies with strips of P.T.F.E. reduced frictional effects to a minimum. The creep strain was obtained by measuring the travel of the crosshead of the testing machine to a sensitivity of 0.1 pct reduction in thickness. The complete subpress assembly was contained in a steel box and for tests above the ambient this was filled with liquid paraffin and heated electrically. Temperatures below the ambient were obtained with a cooling mixture of acetone and solid carbon dioxide in the box. The liquids were stirred and the temperature of the specimen, which was controlled to ±0.5"C dur-ing a test, was measured by a thermocouple placed near the dies. Compression testing of cylindrical specimens was also carried out in the subpress using hardened flat discs separated from the test material by P.T.F.E. sheets which obviated barrelling of the specimens. Ground support at the Thompson Mine emphasizes scaling, rock bolting and wire mesh screening on the backs and walls of all underground stoping and development areas and also full column grouted cable bolting in the bulk mining areas. This paper describes the equipment for the point anchored rock bolts as well as the full column cable bolts. Modifications in design and testing of all components and procedures has ensured a safe and efficient method of ground support for the mining conditions existing at the Thompson Mine.

WILLIAM CHURCH was one of the founders and the first president of the Detroit Copper Mining Co. and was the first man to interest the Phelps Dodge company in the possibilities of the Morenci district, in the '70's. One rather interesting story concerning him is told by James Colquhoun, at one time president of the Arizona Copper Co., in his "History of the Clifton-Morenci Mining District." It seems that a geologist visited the Detroit company's mines and gave Alec McLean, then mine superintendent, quite a lesson on the proper mineralogical terms for what he saw in passing. Later, McLean handed out a few of them to Mr. Church as they walked through the mine on a tour of inspection. The latter had even less regard for a geologist than he did for sulphide ore, which meant little indeed, for in those days the rich ore was all oxidized, and there was no money in the sulphides. So Church was completely unimpressed by the geological and mineralogical terms that McLean had acquired from the visiting geologist. Church turned on him and warned him that so long as he was a member of his staff he was to understand that there were only two kinds of rock in his mines-the one was smelting ore and the other was waste rock, and he was not to forget it.

The history of the Bunker Hill mine dates back to August 26, 1885, when Noah S. Kellogg found the outcrop of the Bunker Hill orebody on the hillside of Milo Gulch above the present town of Wardner, Idaho. A small concentrator was erected in 1886, and before the railroad came, the mine output was transported by mule teams to the head of navigation on Coeur d'Alene Lake. After ten years of production, an interest was purchased in the Tacoma smelter at Tacoma, Wash., to which the entire output was shipped. In 1916 and 1917, a modern lead smelting plant and refinery was erected, and a modern electrolytic zinc reduction plant was built in 1927-1928 by the Sullivan Mining Co. which was 50 pct owned (and now totally owned) by the Bunker Hill Co.

TEE purpose of this article is not only to describe the plant and method of cyaniding the Treadwell concentrates, but to present some of the results of the experimental work obtained in the past three years for the Alaska-Treadwell Gold Mining Co., at Douglas Island, Alaska., under the direction of F. W. Bradley, Consulting Engineer, and Robert A. Kinzie, General Superintendent, of the affiliated companies. At the time the experimental work was undertaken the concentrates were being shipped to the smeltery at Tacoma, Wash., and the cost for treatment of 3-oz. CONTRARY to what seems to be the general impression, the island of Cyprus was not named for the metal copper, but the reverse was the case. The origin of the name is entirely lost. The ancient city Kition, the birthplace of Zeno, is supposed to be the same as Kittim mentioned in Gen. x, 4; Jeremiah ii, 10 and Ezekiel xxvii, 6, and Josephus states that this name seems to have been applied to the city and also to the island itself. Cyprus is 50 miles off the coast of Asia Minor. The mountains on the mainland are plainly visible across the sea from where I write six miles from the shore of Morphou bay. It is 200 miles from Joppa the port of Jerusalem, and 250 from Port Said. The shape of the island is like a lizard, the tail pointing directly toward the old city of Antioch near the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean. The island was once heavily timbered. Among the great trees the cedars were said to even excel the famous cedars of Lebanon. The Odyssey refers to it as the "sweet smelling island" and makes other references. But the continual wars of every race and age completely stripped it of its timber, and for centuries it has been woefully barren. There are two ranges of mountains. One borders the north coast and runs out in a slim rocky ridge forming the "tail." The other occupies the southwestern part of the island, the highest point being Mt. Troodes 6600 ft. high, sometimes called Mt. Olympus. Whether or not it be the Mt. Olympus, anyway right around there the ancient gods and godesses frequently "started things." These peaks are in plain sight 10 miles south from where I live.

THE Federated American Engineering Societies through its Executive Board has endorsed House Bill 5230, introduced April 26, 1921, which provides for- the completion of the topographical survey of the United States. Before this bill can be reported out it will be necessary for the House Committee on -interstate and foreign commerce to hold hearings. This will not be done unless the engineers of the country show interest -and demand action which should be taken immediately after the recess ends and Congress reconvenes this fall. Surveys and maps have been made in this country ever since Captain John Smith mapped Chesapeake Bay about. 300 years ago, but it is only in comparatively recent years that the need for accurate maps has been keenly felt by those engaged in the industrial' and commercial development of the country.

Two sessions during the recent AMC Mining Convention in Los Angeles, September 23-26, served to update industry personnel on the status of health and safety regulations in the US. As reflected by the American Mining Congress resolution on mine safety and health, "Based on experience with the federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 and the federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, (AMC) does not believe that laws designed to force compliance with regulations through the imposition of criminal or civil penalties will result in safer mines. (AMC) feels that the government's participation will be much more productive if greater emphasis is placed on research, training, and inspections aimed primarily at assisting operators and employees in recognizing and eliminating hazardous conditions and practices.

MUCH has been said and written on this subject and probably little new can be said. However, the point of view of the operating company changes from time to time, and more stress may be laid upon a subject today than was done some years ago, and it is with this changing point of view that the following observations are presented: The writer wishes to limit the discussion to views of a company mining bituminous coal, particularly to what the production department expects of the college grad¬uate. In an editorial in MINING AND METALLURGY for February, 1929, entitled "Is. Mining Engineering Passing?" it is stated that: It is not by accident that mining engineering courses have been general rather than special and form even today the only general engineering courses widely offered and followed by engineering students.'* * * even in this age of specialization, the mining engineers remain a body characterized particularly by broad knowledge.

AT THE TIME of my first visit to Bolivia in 1927 the tin-mining industry was prosperous, the tin price at London being more than £300 per long ton of tin, and the operators were making every effort to bring their plants up to the very highest point of capacity as well as of efficiency. Any device or piece of equipment or method that gave promise of increasing production was welcomed regardless of the cost, and the plants were being modernized as rapidly as human ingenuity could make it possible. At the time of my second visit in 1932, however, conditions had changed materially. The price of tin had fallen to a little over £100 but costs had not decreased anywhere in proportion and operators were at their wit's end to cut the operating losses that were everywhere prevalent. Charles L. Bradbury, manager of the Empresa Minera de Huanuni, at Huanuni, Bolivia, had been recently called from Mexico to make all analysis of the situation and to attempt to work out a remedy for the economic conditions that threatened to close the mine. His analysis brought out the following points:

FOR tensile deformation, if the stress value is defined by the ratio of the load to the actual area, and the strain value by the natural logarithm of the ratio of the immediate length to the original gauge length of the sample, the resulting data when plotted with logarithmic coordinates result in a linear relation extending from the initial plastic yielding through the maximum load and in some cases, such as for copper and brass, to fracture'.'. The normal form of the curve, therefore, is a parabola, satisfying the following equation: S = Kem [1] where S and e represent true stress and strain, K is a constant, and m is a coefficient evaluating the slope of the curve and designated therefore as the strain hardening coefficient. Hollomon² has reported that this coefficient is a function of the yield strength as effected by grain size in alpha brass, and the carbon content and heat treatment of steel. In the case of steel, the value of the proportionality constant is a function of the carbon content. It was further shown in that paper2 and also by Low and Prater -hat, if the power relation between stress and strain remains valid, the strain hardening coefficient m, is equal to the strain at the maximum or necking load. Thus, an added significant feature is that this coefficient may serve as an index of the capacity for deformation prior to localized necking and subsequent fracture, e.g. drawability. The constant K may be defined as the strength of the material at unit strain. Together the K constant and the m coefficient describe an alloy's physical properties as far as strength and ductility are concerned for a particular yield strength and, in the case of steel, a particular carbon content. The work of Lacy and Gensamer4 gives data on alloy ferrites from which very close estimates of the strength of ternary and higher iron alloys have been made. It was the purpose of this investigation to develop similar data for commercial copper base alpha solid solution alloys. Preparation of Specimens Commercial binary alloys of copper with aluminum, beryllium, cadmium, nickel, silicon, tin and zinc were investigated. In addition, laboratory castings were made of a 1 pct silicon alloy and a 2 pct aluminum alloy to complete these particular series. Two types of copper were used, oxygen free OFHC and tough pitch FC. The analyses of these alloys are shown in table I. Standard ASTM sheet tensile specimens were used to determine the usual physical properties of each alloy and to obtain stress data at strains from 0.0005 to 0.01.
