The entrainment of copper matte in the slag during the slag skimming stage of a Peirce-Smith converter was studied with a dam break model. Experiments were carried out with a range of fluid pairs where the lighter fluid was allowed to overflow a weir and the amount of entrained heavier fluid measured. The resulting entrainment is measured as the ratio of the heavy to light fluid withdrawn. The fluids include oil-water, water- glycerol and salt solutions-water pairs to cover a wide range of densities and viscosities. It was found that the Richardson number, Ri, correlates the entrainment well. For the case of the liquid-liquid interface initially at the same height as the weir, the entrainment was found to vary with Ri-1/3. The transient flow was simulated with a volume of fluid (VOF) code written in-house and used a stairstep approach to represent flow obstacles. The code was validated against the experimental results with good agreement for the variation of the heights of the two fluid with time. The simulation showed that the prevailing mechanism for entrainment is due to a pressure differential created across the liquid in the converter during pouring resulting in the heavier liquid being rotated upwards and over the weir.

"Industrial sustainability looks to improve material and energy efficiencies, product quality and variety, and productivity within an industrial zone, thus pursuing the long-term sustainable development of the region. This paper introduces a systems-based modeling methodology, which provides industrial leaders with the ability to evaluate future production options to determine the path with the highest positive impact on both their own sustainability and the sustainability of the overall industrial zone. A comprehensive study on sustainable development of an auto-manufacturing focused industrial zone under uncertainty is illustrated. Introduction Sustainable development refers to a continuous process of improvements that must be followed in order to achieve a state of sustainability. In its most general form, a widely accepted definition of sustainable development was identified in the Brundtland Report as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” [1]. Sustainability will occur when the material and social conditions can be maintained or improved for human health and the environment over time without exceeding the ecological capabilities that support them [2]. An industrial zone is defined as a geographic area comprised of a network of industrial sectors, each composed of a number of entities. Such a zone is highly integrated and complex, and contains numerous uncertainties due to each industry’s extreme dependencies on its suppliers and customers throughout the product supply chain. In the context of an industrial zone, sustainable development refers to the continuous process of advancements in the zone, and the entities that comprise it, creating more value, wealth, and profits (economically viable dimension), providing environmentally benign products with less raw material consumption and waste generation (environmentally compatible dimension), and collaboration and a direct relationship among all involved in the supply chain, i.e. the corporations, employees, suppliers, investors, communities, customers, etc. (socially responsible dimension). These are the triple bottom lines of industrial sustainability. In order for economic, environmental, and social sustainability improvements to be successfully implemented within an industrial zone, the industrial decision makers must possess system-wide analysis abilities. The analysis of the sustainable development of an industrial zone involves decisions at the local, regional, or national levels, which are complex and involves handling of ill-defined parameters with a high degree of uncertainty due to the imperfect understanding of the underlying issues [3]. This work focuses strictly on the uncertainties in future zone planning and a method and a scenario based approach that can be used to evaluate the sustainable development of an industrial zone among these uncertainties."

The aim of this research work is to study and characterize precipitates in structural microalloyed steel by transmission electron microscopy and analysis by high resolution (HRTEM). Microalloyed steel with titanium was produced by casting in an electrical induction oven of 25 Kg. capacity. Carbon content in steel was less than 0.1 % and titanium content of 0.04%. Steel was processed thermomechanically; reheated to 1250ºC and hot rolled on a laboratory mill to a 13.0 mm thick plate with a finish rolling temperature of 900ºC and thickness reduction of 80%. Analysis by High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) identified precipitates in the steel; type and morphology. Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis was applied to obtain the chemical composition of precipitates and the matrix. STEM-EDS analysis was also applied to obtain the element profile of precipitates. The results showed the presence of carbonitride precipitates of titanium, Ti (CN), with a circular morphology and size of 10 nm and less.

In this talk, we review highlights of x-ray magnetic scattering studies performed during the last decade, concentrating at the beginning on experiments on the rare earth metal holmium.(1-4) Besides intrinsic interest in the x-ray scattering cross-section and its description, studies of this type are motivated by the possibility that new structural and magnetic properties of rare earth metals might be revealed, and that new techniques may thereby be developed. As a result, interest in x-ray magnetic scattering experiments. has grown rapidly during the last 10 years particularly, with the regular application of synchrotron radiation techniques- Magnetic scattering experiments have by now been performed at most of the x-ray synchrotrons around the world. In addition, insertion .device beamlines dedicated to x-ray magnetic scattering experiments are planned at each of the next-generation storage rings presently under construction in the United States (APS), Europe (ESRF), and Japan (SPRING-8). Generally, the results of x-ray magnetic scattering experiments may be analyzed within two regimes of the incident x-ray energy, namely, in the limit of high x-ray energies, when the incident x-ray energy lies above the excitation energy of any absorption edge, and at resonance, when the incident energy lies near an absorption edge. In the high energy limit, the amplitude for x-ray magnetic scattering has the simple form [L(Q)?A + S(Q)?B](5-7) Here, L(Q) and S(Q) refer to the Fourier 'transforms of the atomic orbital and spin magnetization densities, respectively, and the vectors A and B depend on the incident and scattered wavevectors and on the: incident and scattered polarization vectors. 7) Because the vectors A and B are not identical, the polarization dependence of the orbital contribution to the magnetic cross-section differs from that of the spin contribution. This leads to the possibility that the orbital and spin magnetization densities maybe distinguished, in x-ray scattering experiments. The same distinction is not directly possible by neutron diffraction techniques (in dipole approximation, where the polarization dependence of the orbital contribution is identical to that of the spin contribution), and is important to a fundamental understanding of the electronic structure of magnetic materials. "Environmentally correct materials like the lignocellulosic natural fibers, which are renewable and biodegradable, are being extensively investigated as possible substitutes for synthetic fiber in polymeric composites. Several natural fibers have never been thoroughly investigated as possible composite reinforcement. The fiber obtained from the leaves of the buriti (Mauritia flexuosa) palm tree is one example. Therefore, the objective of this work was to study the properties of buriti waste fibers, in amounts of up to 30%, reinforcing polyester composites.IntroductionIn the past century, the technological development gave priority to new synthetic materials with energy intensive methods of production. Today, there is a concern that conventional energy source such as petroleum, natural gas and coal are the main responsible for global warming. Therefore, the use of natural materials is gaining attention not only for the saving in process energy but also the renewable and biodegradable characteristics that make them environmentally correct. The lignocellulosic natural fibers extracted from cultivated vegetables like jute, sisal, hemp, coconut, flax, ramie and many others are typical examples. This type of fiber is being extensively investigated as a possible substitute for synthetic ones, especially the glass fiber, as composite reinforcement [1].A relevant example of lignocellulosic fiber substitution is nowadays occurring in vehicles. The automobile industry is applying composites reinforced with natural fibers to replace parts such as panels and seat cushions made of fiberglass or polymeric foams [4], as illustrated in Fig. 1. The practical reasons for this preference are that natural fiber composites present less damage to tools and molding equipments as well as relatively better finishing and less abrasive surface than corresponding parts made, for instance, of glass fibers. On top of these advantages, low cost is probably the main motivation for the industrial interest for natural fiber composites, especially in the case of residual fibers [5] or post-used fabrics such as jute sackcloth [6]. Natural fibers, however, are hydrophilic and will not form strong bonding with a hydrophobic polymer, normally used as composite matrix [1-3]. Another disadvantage is the heterogeneous characteristics of a natural fiber, which is typical of biomaterials. This results in a relatively great dispersion of dimensions and properties values such as the mechanical strength [1-3]."

Mexicana de Cananea, S.A de C.V. is a major copper producer mining a large deposit of the disseminated porphyry type considered one of the largest copper resources of the world with 2.7 billion tons of 0.60% copper for the mill plus 4.1 billion tons of averaging 0.26% copper for leaching. Mining of low grade sulfide leach ore, has been an important part of the overall production of the open pit mine which started in 1944. Before this time all the mining in Cananea was by underground methods. The leaching process in Cananea began on the 1920's with in situ operations in the underground mine and small dumps up to the 1950's. Large scale leaching operations began in 1960 and the copper solutions produced were treated in precipitation plants until 1,980 when the first SX/EW Plant was put in operation in Cananea. Leaching action is essentially ferric-bacterial, with no fiesh acid added to the leaching solutions. Traditionally, 5540% copper extraction is recovered fiom ROM, 70- 120 meter high leach dumps in 80 months of leaching. Cananea has successfully improved copper recoveries by implementing several actions that include: 1. Stripping of old dumps. 2. Leaching of old dumps through slotted casing. 3. Crushing conveying leach ore to minus 8 inch and stacking it in 30 meter lifts. As result of these actions, copper recovery has been increased' to about 70% of total copper with actions 1 and 2 and up to 85% in half the time by crushing-conveying the leach ore, based on the same solubility index of the run-of-mine ore. This paper describes the above actions that were implemented to enhance the leaching recoveries from. sulfide leach dumps and the economics of such actions.

"Teck's Trail Operations recently installed new pressure filters in the cold stage purification step in the zinc leaching plant. Alloy 2205 duplex stainless steel was chosen as the material of construction as it was in use in the hot stage purification operation. Within a year of commissioning, an unacceptably high rate (greater than 1 mm/y) of corrosion was observed on the weld heat affected zone (HAZ). Laboratory and field tests were conducted to establish the conditions under which the corrosion was occurring. The tests isolated the aggressive conditions to a unique combination of materials present during the filter regeneration stage. Furthermore, the change of the duplex grain structure of the alloy during welding resulted in the HAZ being more susceptible to the corrosive environment. A new material of construction was recommended as a result of the investigation.IntroductionThe sulphide leaching plant uses four horizontal tank pressure leaf filters to remove solids precipitated in the cold stage electrolyte purification process. The current filters were installed in 2007, and replaced a bank of filter presses. The material of construction for the filters - alloy 2205 duplex stainless steel - was selected based on its successful use in similar service areas of the leaching plant. However, within the first year, unexpected and rapid corrosion of the filter tank material was observed. Although moderate general corrosion was noted throughout the filters, the attack was particularly aggressive in the areas where intense heat was applied during fabrication, observed at the HAZs caused by welding, and on the exposed edge grain of the duplex plates. On the inaugural annual inspection of the filters in the first year of operation, a corrosion penetration rate of 1.0 to 1.5 mm/y was observed at the HAZs. The parent plate of the pressure tank was a minimum of 6 mm, with a minimum allowable thickness of 3 mm under the ASME pressure tank design rules. Therefore, the projected useful life of the filters could then be roughly calculated to be two to three years. Urgent action was required to understand and correct this problem."

Nonferrous and ferrous smelting industries have recently faced the unavoidable necessity of changing and/or improving the smelting technologies as a result of the use of new raw materials which are becoming available from different geographical areas. These new feed materials usually contain different ore composition and higher level of minor components, which adversely affect the smelting process. Due to the problems encountered in several processes as a result of this feed diversification some work has been undertaken in order to make uniform the feed and avoid later surprises in the smelting process. However this has proven to be very difficult and sometimes almost impossible. In this work a more viable approach is undertaken to deal with this problem. It consists of controlling not the cause of the problem i.e. the feed composition but instead the results of this feed change, i.e. the end-point of smelting technologies. It is shown that this approach, when carried out through advances physicochemical modeling and simulation tools is not only easier and less costly but it also helps the control optimization and automation of the smelting processes. Several examples are given and future work is underlined.

"As prices and demand for aluminum metal have increased over the past few years, secondary production has begun to outpace primary aluminum production. However, while recycling of packaging and automotive scrap has continued to increase, aerospace secondary materials remain a largely untapped resource. Shredded or co-mingled aerospace scrap has a high degree of compositional uncertainty due to the prevalence of high copper and high zinc alloy series. Although it is clear that upgrading strategies enable increased usage of aerospace scrap, it is not clear that they would be economic or efficient. Previous studies by the authors have shown that modeling techniques, specifically chance-constrained optimization, provide the ability to evaluate upgrading options in terms of potential aerospace scrap utilization and production cost. Three specific cases are analyzed: a dismantled case, a sorted case, and a shredded or co-mingled case; sensitivity analysis of resulting compositional uncertainty is also presented.IntroductionAluminum recycling has a number of key environmental and economic benefits. Secondary recovery forestalls depletion of non-renewable resources and avoids the deleterious effects of extraction and winning (albeit by substituting some effects of its own). For most metals, the latter provides strong motivation for recycling; for light metals, like aluminum, the motivation is compelling[1]. Fortunately, as prices and demand for aluminum have increased greatly over recent years, secondary production has begun to outpace primary production (Figure 1). However, while the recycling rates of many aluminum products such as used beverage cans and cars have increased over this period, aerospace secondary materials remain a comparatively untapped resource.This untapped resource for scrap aluminum is a very large one; aluminum is the primary aircraft material comprising about 80% of a planes unladen weight[2]. It is used extensively for airframes, landing gear, engine components, propellers, and interior trim. A standard Boeing 747 jumbo jet, for example, contains approximately 75,000 kilograms of aluminum[2]. At an approximate rate of 300 per year, more than 6,000 civil aircraft are forecast to arrive at end-of-life in the next 20 years, potentially creating a large aerospace scrap market[3]. Many military aircraft are already available for possible scrap use, however, most are currently in storage at air force bases around the world[4]. The underutilization of these aerospace scrap materials indicates a lack of economic end-of-life options."

"Rapid technological innovation has propelled the use of electronic equipment leading to the generation of more and more waste electrical and electronic equipments (WEEE). Printed wiring board (PWB) is a component made of one or more layers of insulating material with electrical conductors. To investigate an environmentally friendly process to recycle PWBs, PWB samples with and without additives were pyrolyzed. Liquid, gas and solid products were achieved with different conversion fraction. Analysis of the exhaust gases from the experiments using GC-MS and MS showed that without CaCO3 additives poisonous gases such as C6H6 and HBr were produced which were adequately controlled if CaCO3 was added.IntroductionPyrolysis is one of the best methods for treating complex mixtures of waste polymers and to recover the material and energy content. The process consists of thermal decomposition at moderate temperatures in total absence or small amount of oxygen in which the structures of polymers break down into smaller intermediate products "". The decomposition temperature of a substance is the temperature at which the substance breaks up into smaller substances or into its constituent atoms 2). Thermal treatment of PWBs were reported using DC Arc Plasma furnace 3), and fixed bed reactor 4). One drawback in dealing with thermal treatment of PWB scraps is the likely production of super-toxic halogenated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans from the bromine containing structures. Pyrolysis of organic materials contained in waste PWBs leads to the formation of gases, oils, and chars which can be used as chemical feedstock or fuels ""'. Dehalogenation of the pyrolysis product of electronic scraps is essential to make it commercially acceptable. It would be obviously the most advantageous solution as pyrolysis and dehalogenation are carried out simultaneously. Reported pyrolysis investigations are at experimental stage and have been carried out in vacuum, molten salt, fluidized bed, rotary kiln, entrained, stationary, and moving bed reactors 7). Comparing to the incineration and combustion of PWBs, the pyrolysis process has several characteristics: 8'"">) 1). Converting the organic solid substance into fuel gas, fuel oil and carbon-black as storage energy; 2) Emitting toxic substances such as sulfur, bromine and heavy metals in wastes; and 3) Keeping metals from being oxidized. Although many researches into the pyrolysis of PWB wastes have been reported, most of the works have been carried out using analytical pyrolysis techniques or very small batch reactors ""~'5). Also, most of the works for the pyrolysis of PWBs haves concentrated on the composition of the organic products, particularly the brominated organics. The current study is to investigate the pyrolysis of PWB powders in a small TG-DTA scale and a 50-gram tube furnace scale."

"Photographic technology is based on light sensitivity of silver halides that, because of silver properties, are capable of forming photographic images. Photographic laboratories and hospital departments because of digital photographic systems less use this technology today. Nevertheless recovery of silver is still advantageous because environmental problems related to Ag ions danger to biological system. Many processes have been studied to treat silver containing photographic bath: cementation, chemical precipitation and electrowinning. In this work, after preliminary voltammetric tests, a batch electrometallurgical process has been studied to completely deplete the silver containing photographic fixing baths. The effect, of silver concentration in the electrolyte, varying over the range 0,2-1 g/L, bath stirring and current density ranging from 10 to 500 A/m2 on process yield and deposit quality, has been investigated. Introduction Photographic wastes, electronic scrap and spent catalysts constitute the main sources of materials for silver recycling. Among those silver secondary sources, the photographic discharged material could be still important and useful, even if photographic laboratories and hospital departments, because of digital photographic systems, less use photographic technology. Several processes have been developped in order to recover silver used in the field of photography from both photographic solutions and scrap film paper[1-5]. Fixing solutions are very complex baths but, because of silver position in the electromotive series, electrolysis could represent an advantageous method for silver recovery. Electrolysis produces high purity silver without generating new pollutants, while the fixer can be reused: obviously it is necessary to purge off a portion of this solution in order to avoid the excessive build up of other deleterious compounds into solution. A tested recovery method was constituted by the dissolution of silver from X-ray films with concentrated nitric acid. Internal electrolysis and external electrolysis methods were carried out using a steel electrode as cathode and a copper electrode as anode [6]. Silver recovery from photographic chemical solutions has been also performed in a special cell [7]: the solution is supplied to the bottom of a non-agitated cell having a vertically elongated form and including a central anode enclosed by a cathode. An other study discloses the use of an electrolytic cell comprising at least one anodic compartment and one cathodic compartment: the solution is treated in the cathodic compartment and then recycled in the anodic one [8]. A more recent work proposes the use of zirconium cathode for the recovery of silver from photographic fixing solution [9]: studies carried out by cyclic voltammetry showed that about 98% of total Ag can be recovered with an electrical efficiency close to 92%."

In 1959 Outokumpu started up an integrated nickel smelter and refinery at Harjavalta. The flash smelting ? Peirce-Smith converting route was applied, and the high-grade converter matte was further refined to nickel cathodes by leaching and electrowinning. In 1995 the production capacity was increased from 17 000 mtpa to 52 000 mtpa, based on the Direct Outokumpu Nickel Smelting Process. The additional refinery capacity is based on hydrogen pressure reduction, producing nickel powder and briquettes. The smelting operation is currently part of Boliden Group and the nickel refinery part of OM Group. In the DON technology, high-grade nickel matte with low iron content is produced in the flash smelting furnace directly without subsequent converting. The metal values in the smelting slag are recovered in an electric furnace as an iron containing Ni-matte. The mattes produced differ from the conventional nickel mattes in many respects, and therefore focused R&D efforts have been made in order to cope with their melting points, fluidities and settling properties. When developing and operating metallurgical processes it is crucial to manage and control the characteristics of the products as well as by-products generated in different steps of the process chain. The low melting points of the high-grade nickel mattes produced in the DON furnace, particularly those low in copper, have pointed out challenges in the furnace design, in particular in the hearth and its thermal engineering. Also key issues of the DON technology are smelting of high-magnesia concentrates, the recoveries of nickel and copper, as well as those of PGM`s and cobalt. These factors can be affected by a proper selection of the process concept, and the operational conditions in the processing vessels. This paper deals with the experience of the DON technology gained over the first ten years of operation, including the significant environmental impacts. Selected results of the thermo-dynamic modelling of DON and EF mattes and high-magnesia slags are reviewed, with the reference to the mattes produced. Also the design principles of the FSF and EF will be discussed.

"This paper gives the overview of different alternatives to recycle the following wastes: slag, dusts, wastes of electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) and auto shredder residues (ASR). Based on modified Bogue calculations, steelmaking slags were combined in order to produce a belite-rich clinker activated with sulphoaluminate. The EAF dusts containing significant amount of metals can be recycled in different ways: The carbothermal treatment and INTECT process are reported. The results obtained from the model of Auto Shredder Residue injection into blast furnace show that ASR can be used as reducing agent in the BF process if certain conditions are met. The particle size of this material must be controlled to ensure optimal gasification of the material in raceway. The non-ferrous contents may affect the pig iron quality, which is difficult to rectify at a later point. It seems the pyrolysis is the most attractive process to handle ASR. The BRGM flow sheet of WEEE treatment is also reported.I. Introduction The activities of human been may generate wastes and by their accumulation during several years, these wastes may have an impact on the environment and on the human health. These wastes can be generated in the forms of solid, liquid and gas. A variety of industrial wastes can be recycled for use as products. There are three ways in which industrial waste recycling occurs: at the facility itself (on-site recycling), at commercial facilities that gather waste streams from several companies (off-site recycling), and at a company that uses as inputs in its production process the waste products of another company. The industries producing iron and steel may generate different solid wastes which are classified in three main categories: 1. Ferrous material (mainly dusts and sludges from gas cleaning), 2. Slags (these by-products are generated from different process stages), 3. Others by-products (including refractories and material generated from engineering activities). According to this review, the most quantity of the metallurgical wastes is deposed. Currently, the public opinion opposes the creation of new sites. This leads to the growth of the waste disposal costs. Such situation reduces the enterprise competitiveness and decreases their market share on regional and/or national and/or world scales. A fully instrumented laboratory electrowinning cell has been used to produce nickel cathodes from synthetic solutions containing various impurities in order to evaluate the effects of both metallic ions and organic reagents (from prior solvent extraction and other processes) on the quality of the electrodeposited nickel. The conditions used were typical of those employed in industrial electrowinning operations. The impurities were found to alter the crystal size and shape, induce the development of hydrogen pits on the deposit surface, incorporate as metal hydroxide crystals in the deposit, and alter the internal stress and current efficiency. These effects have been interpreted in terms of previously established relationships between the solution composition and the physical properties of the cathodes. The incorporation of the common metal impurity ions into the deposit have been interpreted in terms of a mass transport controlled reduction or precipitation reactions. In particular, a low concentration of aluminium ions resulted in an initial highly deleterious effect, which was replaced by a positive influence at higher concentrations. A model which involves the buffering effect of the aluminium on the pH at the cathode surface has been proposed.

"GECAMINES is a large mining concern and the world's leading cobalt producer having some of the richest cobalt deposits in the world. Cobalt is associated in the ore with copper as sulphides and oxides and in some locations with nickel too. Specific hydrometallurgical processes have been developed by GECAMINES which had done an important contribution to the development of the cobalt hydrometallurgy.In the Shituru plant, cobalt is obtained from an unique in-pulp electrolysis process, while in Lullu, cobalt is electrolyzed in a clear acidic solution giving a purer deposit. In the beginning of 1996 Shituru started the treatment of mixed Cu-Co-Ni Shinkolobwe hydrates obtained as by-product of an uranium solvent extraction plant. A typical analysis of this feedstock is: 2% Cu, 8% Co and 4% Ni.The nickel sulfide depolarized cementation process developed previously by GECAMINES was inefficient to treat such a high level of nickel contamination and it was decided to produce alloyed Cobalt-Nickel cathodes in the Shituru tankhouse.As anticipated from laboratory tests as previous studies and publications, a lower Ni/Co in the deposit was obtained compared to the Ni/Co ratio solution, despite the nickel reversible electrochemical potential is somewhat higher than the one of cobalt (-0.25 V vs -0.28 V).In this paper, the process flow-sheet and production data are given. Cobalt alloy with 5 - 20 % Ni was obtained at a production level of 300 t per month. The process developed is a new contribution to cobalt hydrometallurgy."

"Copper - nickel - sulphide alloys are typically cooled and solidified in 4, 8 and 16 tonne ingots. These ingots exhibit a variation of grain size distribution and macro segregation of the prime alloy components throughout. The former is assumed to be primarily due to the dominant relation between grain growth rate and the cooling profile, whilst the latter is heavily influenced by buoyancy driven residual convection. The objective of this research program is to examine the extent to which it is possible to develop a 'broad brush' computational model of this ingot cooling process, that can predict some 'integral' measure of the grain size (e.g. average diameter) and the macro-segregation as a function of operating conditions.A computational modeling software framework, PHYSICA+ is used to simulate the complex process of ingot casting, which involves coupling between different physical phenomena. The entire model involves:(i) a 'broad brush' grain growth model that could be used in the prediction of micro/macro-structure of alloy ingot cooling processes,(ii) a heat transfer and solidification model which takes into account a second phase transformation of P NhS2 to heazlewoodite, and (iii) NS fluid flow simulation which provides a good basis for further micro/macro segregation modeling.At this stage some results of the 3D convection driven thermal cooling and solidification profiles will be shown, together with the 'integral' model for the grain size prediction."

Leaching, cementation, electroplating and flotation are all electrochemical phenomenon. They are also key processes in the hydrometallurgical treatment of metals. Unfortunately electrochemical methods tend to be under-utilized when studying these processes and one possible reason for this is the confusion surrounding the large number of electrochemical techniques available. In this paper four former PhD students of Professor Ian Ritchie present an insight into how one electrochemical technique can be used to compliment rate/kinetic studies. The paper details how to perform the experiments, interpret data, and recognize complications with the results. Examples where this approach has been highly successful are presented, and include: cementation of zinc by aluminium, cementation of copper by nickel, cyanide leaching of gold and the cementation of gold thiourea by mild steel. The examples illustrate that this universal approach adopted by Ian Ritchie provides the key to understanding the mechanism of many hydrometallurgical reactions.

"The synergistic effect of Cyanex 302 on solvent extraction of nickel and cadmium from sulfate solution with D2EHPA diluted in kerosene was investigated with the aim of increasing separation efficiency. Experiments were carried out within a pH range of 0.1-5.0 using sole D2EHPA and D2EHPA-Cyanex 302 mixtures in different ratios. Increasing Cyanex 302 to D2EHPA ratios in the organic phase caused a left shifting of the extraction isotherm of cadmium and a right shifting of the extraction isotherm of nickel. As a result, optimum separation was found with a Cyanex 302 to D2EHPA ratio of 0.1M:0.5M. In the present system, effect of a modifying reagent such as TBP was studied. The influence of various diluents including kerosene and carbon tetrachloride was also investigated.IntroductionBatteries are popular sources of portable energy. Ni-Cd batteries are manufactured in two main groups of small domestic cells and large industrial batteries with 80% being in domestic use. Ni-Cd cells have various uses, for example in cordless electric utensils, cordless telephones, airplane engine starters, and communicational distribution systems [1].Depleted Ni-Cd batteries are classified as hazardous waste since nickel and cadmium are heavy metals and suspected carcinogens. Given the risk associated with uncontrolled disposal, directions for issuing legislation on disposal and recycling of used batteries have been made in industrialized countries [2]. Recycling of Ni-Cd batteries is important from both economic and environmental points of view. Different methods have been used for recycling these wastes through pyrometallurgy [3], biotechnology [4,5], and hydrometallurgy [1,2].Due to the advantages of hydrometallurgical processes, several studies have been implemented on leaching and solvent extraction (SX) of the used Ni-Cd batteries. Leaching of batteries is usually done in sulfate or chloride media; while solvent extraction has been used in different extractants: two-stage solvent extraction by D2EHPA and Cyanex 272 [6]. Solvent extraction of Cd from leach solutions has been studied using various extractants; Cyanex 301 [1], D2EHPA [7], Cyanex 302 [8], Cyanex 923 [9], Cyanex 272, Tops 99, PC88A [10]. Application of phosphorus based extractants for the solvent extraction studies of Ni such as TOPS 99 [11], D2EHPA [12], Cyanex 272 [2], has been investigated. Separation of Cd(ll), Ni(II), and Co(ll) from chloride leach liquor of spent batteries [13], were explored in the earlier studies. Cd extraction with D2EHPA involves co-extraction of both Ni and Co [14], which causes issues in the separation process efficiency."

Catalysts used in petroleum industry often contain valuable amounts of PGMs. The typical recycling route for those materials is the pyrometallurgical one, but this treatment way offers limited flexibility with respect to small charge weights. A new process, combining a pyrometallurgical pre-treatment step of the ceramic carriers with a hydrometallurgical leaching procedure overcomes this disadvantage. It not only allows the economical treatment of even very small charge weights, but also gives the possibility to maximize the PGM yield by individually adapting the process to the different charge materials. Due to an ingenious process design, where all leaching agents and effluents are recycled in a closed loop and therefore no waste waters leave the process, process operation becomes very economical. However, the temperature-time-regime in the pyrometallurgical pre-treatment step is of major importance for the success of the whole process. Therefore various investigations have been done to identify how the different process variables in the pyrometallurgical pre-treatment influence the subsequent leaching procedure. It turned out, that the adjustment of the correct phase-modification in the ceramic carrier materials during the pyrometallurgical treatment is the key factor of this process step. Although it is a troublesome issue to exactly adjust the correct phase modifications, it is the prerequisite to take advantage of the benefits of this new process concept.

"In this study, design and investigation of biogas digester consisting of methane tank with built-in solar collector to utilize solar energy for the heating of the slurry prepared from the dung and heat exchanger is designed, developed and tested. The digester was laboratory type and consists of cylindrical metallic tank of size of 0.5 m in diameter; 1 m in height and 200 liters in volume. The surface of the digester from outside was covered by thermo insulated material a glass wool, except of south side (in northern hemisphere). This side played the role of built-in collector and was blackened to increase absorption of solar irradiation and covered under 45o by glass. In the blackened side of the digester on the different heights it was installed metallic pipes for the inlet and outlet of the air, connected with heat exchanger installed inside of the digester. The heat exchanger was fixed in the level above of the inlet pipe. The horizontal plane reflector concentrates solar beams to blackened side of the digester. In the winter period, it was found that the retention time of this digester is shorter on 15% and produced biogas volume is larger on 20% with respect of ordinary biogas digester. This digester is used for the demonstrative purposes and as a teaching aid presently and base on the results it may be used for the construction of large volume digesters for use in the farms, especially located in the remote and mountain areas where the climate in the winter period is cold. Introduction At present many experts around the world have focused their efforts to energy crises because energy is one of the most important factors for the development of the society. It is known that consuming energy is proportional to quality or standard of life. There is a close relationship between energy consumption and the Gross National Product (GNP). It is obvious that for further development of the country additional sources of energy is required, which are cheap, safe and environmentally compatible with respect to the action on possible wastes. Utilization of renewable energy is one route to help in solving the above mentioned problems. In particular, biogas as a source of renewable energy is produced by biotechnology and used wide on residential scale [1]. The biogas was produced for the very first time in 1814 by Deivy from organic wastes. In 1900 production of biogas was started in Bombay (India) [2, 3]. Biogas consists of 55-70% methane (CH4) and around of 27-44% carbon dioxide (CO2) and less than 1% H2 and H2S. At present biogas is used widely in some countries for lighting, machines, and vehicles, generators, cooking and heating. Biogas generation is suitable for small to large scale operation and at present is realized in a number of developed and developing countries as USA, Hungary, China, India etc. Since 1990s biogas projects construction in China has developed steadily by the end of 1998, there were altogether 6.88 million household biogas digesters [4]. In Russia biogas digesters are used for processing of hard dung into biogas [5]. Over the last few years the very first biogas digesters were constructed in Tajikistan as well [6,7] and it was found that the digesters can work with sufficiently high efficiency in mountain areas as well ."
