Companies are constantly searching for more effective methods of controlling and reducing costs. In recent years increased emphasis has been placed on cost reporting to the middle manager and down to the first-line foreman because this is the place where the money is really spent. Traditionally, operations management has been relegated to using cost systems designed by financial management for the use of financial management. They reflect the machinery necessary to produce profit and loss statements, and so-called cost reports emanating from these systems frequently have a heavy orientation toward product costing rather than the cost that an individual manager or foreman actually controls. In addition to direct operating costs by function or product type, they often include overhead allocations from local operations as well as from the home office. This type of full-absorption costing has many worthwhile uses but is of little or no use to operations management for cost control purposes. It is particularly discouraging to many supervisors because it includes so many categories of cost over which they have little or no control. It is for this reason that modern, aggressively managed companies are increasingly moving in the direction of responsibility cost reporting. It is the objective of responsibility cost reporting to report only direct operating costs over which the individual manager or foreman has complete control, thus facilitating cost control by fixing responsibility for cost.

This paper outlines a unique case of the development of strategies to reduce ventilation and heating costs in Konsuln iron ore mine in northern Sweden. The mine, located just south of Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag’s Kiruna iron ore mine, was developed as a test mine from 2018-2020 for the Sustainable Underground Mining (SUM) project. Besides functioning as a test mine, Konsuln also contributes to ore production. The existing mine ventilation system was designed for the current production rate of 0.8 million tons per annum (Mtpa). There is a plan to increase this rate to between 1.8 and 2.0 Mtpa.

The time-worn adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" was never more applicable than when used in reference to coal mine safety. Many individuals have dedicated many hours to developing effective accident prevention programs, and much has been accomplished. Each production escalation, however, creates new hazards and safety problems which need special study and research. It is a never ending cyle. To study the progress of coal-mine safety is to raise memories of many individuals who have been dedicated to removing the hazards that have developed with increased productivity and deeper penetration into the earth for coal. Some vivid examples of this dedication are the works of the men who pioneered the use of the safety lamp and the use of rock dust in mining.

Coeur d'Alene Mines Corporation's Thunder Mountain project in Valley County, Idaho, is one of the most remote active mining operations in the US. High altitude, heavy snows, and proximity to wilderness complicate operations in this environmentally sensitive area. Mining is conducted by conventional open pit techniques while processing utilizes on-off heap leaching and Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation. The project is one of a few similar operations which detoxify the leached ore prior to its removal from the leach pads. Both leaching and neutralizing ( detoxifying) circuits are closed and independent loops. After leaching, alkaline chlorine solutions destroy residual cyanide in the heaps. Calcium hypochlorite solution for the cyanide destruction is prepared by injecting chlorine gas into milk of lime solution.

In April 1986, FMC- Paradise Peak Corporation began milling at the Paradise Peak Mine, which is located eight miles southeast of Gabbs, Nevada. The mill processes about 4DOO tons per day of ore through the mill and cyanide leaching circuit. Gold and silver are recovered via the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process. Tailings are routed to a tailings pond located about one half mile southeast of the mill facility. The pond, lined with 60 mil MDPE, was 25 acres at the start of the cyanide detoxification, covers 90 acres and will ultimately cover 180 acres. Solution is reclaimed from the pond and circulated back to the mill.

The use of carbon for the recovery of the gold dissolved in cyanide leaching began with a pilot unit at Barberton in 1977. This was quickly followed by larger scale plants at Modderfontein (1978), President Brand (calcine 1980), Western Areas (filter tails 1980) and Beisa (primary ore 1981) and has grown to become the preferred process. There are currently 34 operations that use the carbon in pulp/leach process which accounts for 35 percent of South Africa's gold production. The size of individual plant varies over a wide range.

Arizona leads all other states in the value of gemstones produced with an annual production which exceeds $3,000,000. Gemstones are an important component of the mineral wealth of the State. Turquoise, peridot, chrysocoll a, petrified wood, fire agate and crystallized mineral specimens are among the gemstones commercially mined. Numerous additional deposits are operated by hobbyists. The State's reputation as a source of gemstones and specimens for the collector and lapidary adds to the economy of the State by attracting tourists. Production of gemstones further adds to the State's economy through employment in the value added gemstone processing industries and by employment of Native American craftsmen.

History The breaking and shaping of rock was one of man's earliest occupations. In the Paleolithic Age long before the dawn of history, arrow¬smiths and the makers of stone axes, hammers, knives, scrapers, spears, and borers were highly respected members of society. In early historical times stones for building blocks, roads, and city walls were shaped by slaves and convicts, who also did most of the mining. However, great artists erected beautiful stone sculptures, while gifted architects planned imposing temples and monuments. Until well into the 19th century nearly all rock was broken laboriously by hand. The small rock required by John MacAdam for his macadamized roads in England in the 1820s was produced by women and boys seated alongside the roadside with hand hammers and legs wrapped with rags. Eli Whitney Blake, a nephew of the Eli Whitney who invented the cotton gin, developed the first successful jaw crusher before 1870. The gyratory conical crusher soon followed. Comparative tests established its large capacity advantage over the jaw crusher, as well as its greater cost for a given feed size. Both types have been in use for more than 100 years. Crushing rolls appeared before 1900. Thomas A. Edison made very large diameter rolls which were excessively long; they failed because of shaft deflection. Various types of disk crushers and edge runner rolls appeared about this time. The older methods of reducing rock were adaptations of other processes. The stamp battery of dropping weights effected crushing by simulating heavy hammer blows; the much earlier arrastre, in which heavy stones were dragged in a circular path over the ore by animal power, came from the prehistoric method of grinding grain between two rubbing stones, while the jaw crusher was adapted from simple squeezing devices. But the tumbling grinding mill was not just an adaptation; it was an invention, because it required thinking on a somewhat higher order-there was no prototype. Its nearest antecedents were probably the small closed tumbling drums used in England more than a century ago for cleaning and polishing small iron castings. The date of the first tumbling mill actually used to grind rock is unknown, but it was later than the American Civil War (1861¬1865). It was almost certainly a closed or batch mill in which rock was placed and rotated until it reached the desired particle size. It could have been operated either wet or dry. The first published refer¬ence to such a batch mill was one introduced by Alsing in England (1870) for the grinding of calcined flints for pottery work.21 There are several rather indefinite reports of grinding mills in the early 1890s, including an overflow ball mill in the Helena and Livingstone reduction plant in Montana which may have been the first of its kind. 11 Many of the first mills, which were called tube mills, used hard rock both as grinding media and as mill lining. The rock used was preferably stone from the Normandy and Danish beaches, when it could be imported. This remarkable siliceous stone was already widely used for grist mills throughout America, and its resistance to wear was greatly respected. The decade of the 1890s saw the development of tumbling mills with continuous feed and discharge and their extension into different industrial uses. By 1895 some experience had been accumulated. Iron grinding balls were being tested and the proper speed of rotation was being determined. The Clark Patent tube mill was featured in an E. P. Allis bulletin of 1890, which may have been the first published description of a tube mill. More than 1,000 Gates tube mills had been built by Allis-Chalmers before 1913. Many of these were used in gold mining, espe¬cially in South Africa. The 5 x 22-ft size was particularly favored for grinding portland cement; the use of tumbling mills in the manufac¬ture of cement began about 1900. A great deal of attention was paid to the mill lining. Metal was then relatively expensive, and the general approach was to trap some of the rock grinding media into mill lining pockets. This rock would then absorb the wear and protect the metal lining. In the first ten years of the 20th century there were several different types of pocketed liners, with different manufacturers advancing the superior claims of their patented arrangements. The Osborne liner, developed in South Africa, was probably the most successful. 21 Another item which attracted much attention was size classifica¬tion within the mill and in ancillary equipment attached to the mill and rotating with it. The Krupp type, with interior screens protected inside the mill lining, was developed quite early in Germany, possibly before 1890. The Dorr reciprocating rake classifier (1907) had not yet been invented, and many strange and impractical screening and classifying devices were proposed. In these unsatisfactory machines the two separate processes of size reduction and classification were combined into one operation. It was many years before recognition came that a machine is most efficient when it is designed for one specific purpose. There was much industrial wastage before the opera¬tions of grinding and classification were finally separated. After 1900 the grinding of portland cement raw material and of cement clinker required large numbers of tumbling mills. Most of the raw material was then ground dry. This was also the heyday of gold mining. The old stamp mills that were used in great numbers for grinding gold ore did not grind sufficiently fine to liberate all of the gold, and the new tube mills were installed following the stamps. After 1910 larger diameter tum¬bling mills with larger grinding media were developed. These could receive the finely crushed ore directly, and the inefficient stamp batter¬ies were gradually eliminated. The Rand in South Africa was the greatest gold producer, treating immense quantities of rather low-grade but consistently free milling gold ore. The first tumbling mills, or tube mills, went into operation there in 1904. They were so successful that within a few years no new stamp batteries were installed in the district, even though old ones continued to pound away until after 1950.3 The early tube mills on the Rand all employed Normandy or Danish pebbles, which had to be imported at considerable expense. Their reported wear was as low as 4 lb per ton ground. 4 Many of the mills were lined with the same tough Danish stone cemented into place, while others used the pocketed steel Osborne liner. It was in 1907 on the Rand that an important test was made using hard native ore for grinding media in place of the expensive imported pebbles. 3 This ore, called banket, did not wear as well as the renowned Danish pebbles, but the cost per ton of grinding was definitely reduced. Many of the tube mills on the Rand were soon grinding with native ore. This was the beginning of the development now called autogenous grinding, in which the ore grinds itself. This is treated under a separate heading. See Subsection 3C, Chapter 4. Gold mining was important in America also, and its grinding history follows that of the Rand. Danish pebbles were replaced by native ore in Santa Gertrudis, Mexico, in 1913, 4 and in Consolidated Gold Fields, Nevada, in 1914. 5 Other properties followed suit. However, it gradually became apparent that the capacity of a given mill could be almost doubled if rock grinding media were re¬placed by cast iron or steel grinding balls. In order to increase plant grinding capacity many rock media mills were converted to iron grind¬ing media in the second decade of the present century. In some mills the motor size was doubled; other mills were cut in two and another motor was provided for the second half. Grinding mills began to assume a more modern appearance. Crushing rolls were formerly much used following crushing in jaw or gyratory crushers and preceding grinding in ball mills. How¬ever, the roll surfaces wore rapidly, and skilled maintenance was required to obtain even wear. Rod mills could take feed of the same crusher product size and reduce it finer. Arizona copper mines produced nearly 67% of the nation?s copper in 2000, according to a report released by the Arizona Mining Association (AMA). This was a slightly larger share than in 2000 despite large reductions by one major copper producer and production cutbacks at several other facilities. In 1999, Arizona mines produced 64% of the nation?s copper. The report was prepared by economist George F. Leaming of the Western Economic Analysis Center in Marana, AZ. It also showed the copper industry had a $4.6-billion impact on the Arizona economy in 2000, a 26%decline from 1999. This is the lowest financial impact since 1973 and less than half the record reached in 1981of $9.6 billion. The decline is primarily due to a sustained low copper price and a slow-down in the US economy. The mining industry?s impact included combined direct and indirect contributions of $1.283 billion in personal income for Arizona residents, the equivalent of 43,000jobs. More than 5,000 of those jobs were in state and local government and more than 18,000 were in trade and ser-vice businesses. The copper industry directly employed fewer than 8,000 people statewide in 2000. This was down about 23% from 1999.

Gaby Copper Mining?s Gabriela Mistral property is located in the Antofagasta region of northern Chile, at an altitude of 2,660 m (8,727 ft) above sea level. The reserve contains an estimated 562 Mt (620 million st) of oxide ore with an average grade of 0.41 percent total copper. The mine went into production in 2008. Gaby Copper faced the problem of having no reliable way to measure the solids level. This is a challenge that exists throughout the mining industry, where dust in the air and accumulation of solids on a sensor make accurate measurements difficult in areas such as transfer chutes, the rock box underneath crushers, silos and anywhere else that information is needed on the level of solids. The next-generation technology in the Sitrans LR560 radar from Siemens addresses this challenge. With a frequency of 78 GHz ? higher than previous generations of radar ? it provides a more robust signal for measuring in areas where there are high levels of dust accumulation. The Sitrans LR560 provides a signal beam angle of four degrees, significantly narrower than any other product on the market can offer.

The study compares productivity, morphology, and structure of indium deposits on both cathodes, finding that nickel cathodes generally yield better results.

The Jones Hill prospect is a Proterozoic age, volcanogenic, semi-massive to massive sulfide deposit. The deposit is located on the western edge of the Pecos greenstone belt in the southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico. The prospect is found in a block (West Block) of meta- igneous rocks, primarily diabase, metavolcanic rocks, and metasedimentary rocks (fig. 1). This assemblage is typical of lithologies found in the greenstone belt. Metamorphic grade is greenschist to lower amphibolite. The West Block is bound- ed on the west by Proterozoic age (1.7-1.4 b.y. by Rb/Sr), granitic plutons collectively called the Embudo granite, and on the east by Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, primarily sandstones, shales, and limestones of Mississippian and Pennsylvanian age. The mineralization occurs in a single horizon which has been overturned and cut into two blocks by a high-angle reverse fault (fig. 2). The mineralized horizon is found at the contact of felsic metavolcanic and rnetavolcaniclastic rocks with overlying intermediate metasedimentary rocks. The local stratigraphic sec- tion from bottom to top is as follows: 1) porphyroblastic quartz- sericite schist (originally a rhyolitic, subvolcanic intrusive); 2) quartz-sericite-chlorite-biotite schist (felsic metavolcanic and metavolcaniclastic rocks); 3) chlorite-talc-biotite-sulfide schist (altered felsic metavolcanic rocks); 4) carbonate-quartz-sulfide [ ] chlorite-tremolite-talc schist (mineralized exhalite); 5) quartz- chlorite schist (silicified tuff); and 6) amphibole-chlorite-feldspar- biotite schist (occasional mafic to intermediate metavolcanic flows).

With commodity prices rising again and market conditions stabilizing, the Metals Economics Group (MEG) found that most mining companies increased their exploration budgets in 2010. In the groups 21st edition of the Corporate Exploration Strategies (CES), MEG found a 44-percent rise in the estimated worldwide exploration total for 2010. MEG found that the estimated total 2010 budget for nonferrous metals exploration reached $12.1 billion, reinstating almost two-thirds of the industry?s $6 billion in cuts to exploration in 2009. Nonferrous exploration refers to expenditures related to precious and base metals, diamonds, uranium and some industrial minerals; it excludes iron ore, aluminum, coal, and oil and gas. In 2008, exploration budgets were at an all-time high of $14.4 billion. This capped a six-year run in which budgets rose. In 2009, nonferrous exploration budgets dropped 42 percent in 2009 as the global economic crisis and declining prices for almost all commodities took their toll on the industry. Metals prices - the primary driver of exploration spending - have improved markedly since bottoming in early 2009, and have traded well above their long-term trends throughout 2010. In response, major, intermediate and junior companies have all increased their aggregate exploration allocations in 2010. In particular, the significant improvement in the availability of equity financings for the juniors over the past 12 to 18 months has allowed this group to account for the largest share of the overall increase in exploration spending this year.

The Changement mine in French Guyana has, since 1983, processed gold ore by classical gravity methods. A large part of the gold is in the form of very small, free or enclosed grains. Recovery by gravity methods is thus limited (25-30%) and the present plant produces about 40,000 t annually of auriferous waste assaying about 6 git. The company therefore decided to retreat the waste by heap cyanidation. After laboratory tests which showed the feasibility of the method, a pilot test was set up on site. An experimental 3000 t heap, composed of waste of 0-8 mm grain size, was laid out by bucket loader on an impermeable pad covered by PVC and geotextile cloth. The upper layer of the heap was reworked by mechanical shovel to break up the area that had been compacted by the passage of the loader so as to restore adequate permeability.

The Escalante Silver Mine in Southwest Utah produces an average of 71.000 kg (2.3 million troy ounces) of silver dore annually. Precipitates from a cyanide leach circuit are treated by either acid leaching prior to fusion or a direct fusion with nitre. Process development, plant experience, and a comparison of both methods will be discussed. Plant experience from the custom treatment of a gold/silver precipitate containing matte producing elements will also be covered.

Transportation tunnels are highly sensitive to ground movements and are required to be stable and secure for safe operation. In urban areas, the interaction between tunnels and adjacent piles, which are widely used to support buildings and other structures, requires careful consideration. The seismic response of tunnels may vary depending on the lateral stiffness and strength of the tunnel walls, while the axial loading and seismic impact of adjacent piles may cause soil displacement and stress changes that can damage the tunnel lining. As a result, tunnel owners often impose strict limits on the design of new piles lying close to existing tunnels including maximum allowable tunnel deformation, stress change limits, and minimum tunnel to pile separation distances. This paper describes a numerical analysis of the inuence of the axial loading and seismic impact of bored pile foundations on subway tunnels, undertaen using the nite element software laxis D. ased on the results of the numerical analysis, the paper suggests a more realistic and less conservative approach for designing piles in close proximity to transportation tunnels. INTRODUCTION The interaction between tunnels and adjacent piles can cause stress changes and displacements in the soil and structures which may adversely impact structural performance and tunnel safety. The Cyanide Regeneration Process (CRP) was developed by Golconda Engineering and Mining Services and installed at Golconda's Beaconsfield Gold Tailings Retreatment Project situated in Tasmania, Australia. The Tailings Project is a 1000 ton per day carbon-in-pulp treatment plant, feed for which consists of tailings material which is dredged from the Tamar River. The pulp is screened to remove debris, then cycloned to form two products. Underflow pulp is stored in a 350 ton bin and cyclone overflow passes to a thickener. The coarse pulp material is fed to the grinding circuit then rejoins the thickened slimes in the cyanide leach circuit. Gold is extracted by carbon-in-pulp techniques. The plant is sited in rolling, hilly country approximately 200 meters from the Tamar River. The residue disposal area is quite small consisting of four dams, totalling 42 acres. The regional climate is cool and wet with little evaporation; therefore, we anticipated a net increase in contained liquor, and subsequent storage problems. Our plan was to remove cyanide from the liquor prior to returning the detoxified solution to the river system. Such treatment was not required until midway through the second year of the project. Initial testwork on sample material indicated that destruction of cyanide by chlorine was the simple solution. Subsequent follow-up on actual plant liquor indicated a huge chlorine requirement due, we believe, to the substantial degradation of vegetable matter plus organic content from the marine environment. The cost of cyanide destruction could not be justified.

INTRODUCTION The Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) in North Carolina is the fourth largest airport in the southeast region of the United States. The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority is currently underway with planning, designing and constructing are placement Passenger Terminal as part of the Major Capital Improvements Program at Raleigh Durham International Airport. The Terminal C Expansion and Renovation Project will replace the existing Terminal C structure with a new processor building and concourse. The project is separated into several contracts. The early stage contracts are constructing a west side storm water management facility, relocating taxiways, installing new drainage systems, installing new aircraft apron pavement, Demolition, the Central Energy Plant and Early Foundations. The later projects are the Terminal Building, Passenger Boarding Bridges, Information Technology Systems and Integration, Furniture, Furnishings & Equipment and Specialty Millwork. The Terminal Building will be constructed in two phases. Phase 1 constructs the north half of the new terminal. Airline operations will move to the new terminal at the completion of this phase. Phase 2 completes construction of the south processor building. The full build out of the project, subject to funding availability, will replace the remainder of the south concourse. The Program’s primary focus is to replace the existing passenger Terminal C with a new terminal that will provide more passenger gates and larger passenger screening, ticketing and baggage handling facilities. The planning for the New Terminal C Program began in 2002 with construction starting in March, 2003. The continuing growth of passenger airline travel in the Raleigh/Durham metropolitan area requires RDU to expand its facilities to keep up with the present and future growth within the Region. In October of 2002, the RDU Airport Authority selected Parsons Transportation Group as the Program Manager/Construction Manager to help assist in the development of the Terminal C expansion program. RDU Airport Authority selected the Seattle Washington Office of URS Corporation as the Engineer of Record for the West Side Storm Water Management Facilities. The Westside Storm Water Management Facilities Project became one of the early critical path activities of the overall RDUAA Terminal C Expansion Program. The Briar Creek Reservoir had been constructed to accommodate storm water runoff to the west of the Airport. The existing 1.5 m culvert that drained runoff from the airport terminal (area) to the reservoir was insufficient in supporting the additional flows

Everybody has an opinion what the quality of a grinding mill head casting should be, yet extremely few take the time, or get the opportunity, to compare their opinions against fitness-for-purpose data. The real question is not how flawless the casting should/could be, but rather how long will ?this? casting survive in operation. To validate an opinion on this topic one needs either extensive historical data, or comprehensive experimental data, or preferably, a combination of both. The same data can also be used to establish the conservativeness, or lack thereof, of analytical prediction methods.
