The recently completed Lower Northwest Interceptor Program (LNWI) in Sacramento, California comprises, ten pairs of micro tunnels totaling 4,369 m (14,417 ft),three horizontal directionally drilled bores totaling 956 m (3,154 ft), and two large diameter tunnels under the Sacramento River totaling 1,198 m (3,953 ft). This paper briefly summarizes surface and subsurface conditions, and planning and design considerations. It then goes on to describe problems encounterd with each trenchless crossing, as well as lessons learned with respect to shaft construction, ground control at shafts during tunnel break-in and break-out, frac-out and heave, settlement, obstructions, coordination with permitting agencies, and application of geotechnical baseline reports.

As part of a purchase of a fleet of Caterpillar 785 trucks, Round Mountain Gold Corp., Cashman Equipment Co. and Caterpillar Inc. entered into a four-year contract for the major maintenance of the fleet of trucks. This contract includes fixed costs and guaranteed availability. The results have been excellent, and the fleet of trucks performs well. History The Smoky Valley Common Operation is a unique mine. Through a mixture of diligence and foresight, it has become the largest open-pit, heap leaching gold mine in the world. This was no small feat considering the remote area surrounding the mine. Round Mountain is located in north-central Nye County, NV. To the east of the town and mine lies the Central Toquima mountain range. To the west is the Toiyabe mountain range. Between them is the Big Smoky Valley, a flat expanse of sagebrush, salt grass and fine dirt.

Let’s start off with your assessment of the mining industry. Today, the status of the mining industry is stronger than it has been over the previous few years. While mining continues to be a major part of the world’s economic foundation, the industry is gaining strength due to rebounding metals and minerals prices. And now, with these rising prices and the changes the industry instituted during the years when mining-related commodities were selling at low prices, our stronger, more productive and internationally competitive industry should flourish. Mining remains an essential business and the industry is far ahead of the game when it comes to the trend of globalization as a key to sustained growth. Also, the industry continues to realize increased productivity through technological innovations. And an increasing number of countries are moving towards capitalism, which opens doors for exploration and mining within their borders. After looking at all of these factors, I believe that the mining industry will only continue to gain momentum in the future.

Introduction A subject long debated but rarely resolved involves the interaction between the academic community and industry in the sponsorship and conduct of research. The subject is, unfortunately, too often treated as a controversy involving ethics and the profit motive. But, in fact, the two branches of society - industry and academia - are necessarily part of the same system. In the last 25 years, the realization has developed that research alone is not sufficient to bring about use of those results to benefit society through productivity gains and economic growth. The flow of events shown in Fig. 1 was generally believed to be the steps required for reaping the benefits of research. Today, research still has the very important role of creating new information or new ideas. However, it is recognized to be but one of many steps in a process that we now refer to as technological innovation. Charpie (1967) said, "Technological innovation is the driving force behind economic growth in the US. In this context, innovation means the process by which a new idea is successfully translated into economic impact within our own society, by providing better products, and simultaneously creating new jobs in the manufacturing of those products. Only after an investigation is put into sufficient use to have an economic effect, is it termed an innovation." One of the best depictions of the technological innovation process is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These are adapted from Haeffner (1975), and modified by the Committee on Mineral Technology of the National Research Council (1981). Figure 2 identifies the many steps involved in the process. It designates a generalized form for interaction between the academic community and industry. Figure 3 identifies the steps in the "innovation activity" box of Fig. 2. Academia is generally responsible for developing of new knowledge and ideas, as well as maintaining and enlarging the collected body of scientific knowledge. Industry is responsible for developing new products, methods, and processes. Both institutions operate for the benefit of society, but under different driving forces. Introduction Since the last decade the iron ore processing industry has undergone drastic changes from supplying screened and natural ores to manufacturing tailored concentrates and pellets. Increased need for the beneficiation of lower grade iron ore deposits and the increased demand for higher grade concentrates necessitate finer grinding of iron ores before concentration. The normal filtration stations used in the past are experiencing difficulties in dewatering the finely ground concentrates to moisture levels acceptable for balling. In addition to finer grinding, applications of complex beneficiation techniques has decreased the filterability of the concentrates and create problems in filtration of iron ore concentrates. An overview of the filtration literature indicates there are few research reports on the dewatering of iron ore concentrate slurries. There exists a need to understand the principles and mechanisms involved in the filtration of iron ore concentrate slurries with a goal of developing more efficient filtration techniques. This paper presents the results from the first phase of our research program that included the development of a reproducible benchscale filtration technique and the investigation of the filtration behavior of eight iron ore concentrates.

"The mineral raw materials industry is a key-component of the Gross Domestic Product of industrialised economies, closely related to both the building and the industrial sectors. Despite this, at local level mining and quarrying are associated with both irreversible environmental damage and several visual alterations affecting the natural landscape. In this sense, SIA (Social Impact Assessment) has become a strategic tool that can not only improve the prediction but also the assessment of the social impact by involving the local communities in a participatory process. Taking into account the SIA experience, together with the examination of some relevant international case studies, it is possible to draw up a list of good practices for mining project management, from exploration through to closure and beyond, with quarry restoration. Such good practices will complement the existing studies, focusing on environmental issues, with the social issues arisen considered in SIA application."

Introduction Inco is the major North American nickel producer. Initially based in Sudbury, Ontario, its past exploration activity was directed toward finding new nickel deposits. New nickel sulfide discoveries outside Sudbury have included Thompson, Manitoba; Shebandowan, Ontario; and Widgiemooltha in Western Australia as well as a host of nickel laterite deposits. The company is currently diversifying into other commodities, including gold. Inco's exploration department participated in uranium discoveries in Saskatchewan and chromite discoveries at Tiebaghi in New Caledonia. In addition, it found new gold deposits at Lupin, Northwest Territories; Crixas, Brazil; Hoyle Township, Ontario; and Casa Berardi in Quebec. Crixas and Casa Berardi are currently being evaluated by underground exploration. Figure 1 shows some Canadian Shield gold locations where Inco is or was an active participant. Base metal developments Base metal exploration in shield areas has been greatly eased by applying scientific studies. Archean nickel sulfide deposits have been found using komatiitic-flow models (Fardon, 1971). Volcanogenic massive sulfide model has been applied to copper-zinc deposits (Sangster and Scott, 1976). Such deposits were subsequently seen developing on the sea floor through black smokers (Spiess, MacDonald, and Atwater, 1980). Sedimentary processes were recognized early as important in ore formation, particularly in the southern hemisphere (King, 1976). And many ore deposits are now regarded as a simple part of the geological column (Stanton, 1960 and 1972). Petrographic work on alteration patterns in and around ore bodies was used to develop standard porphyry copper models (Lowell and Guilbert, 1970). Epithermal models for precious metals followed. Stratigraphic zonation patterns have been formulated for base metal deposits, including keel facies, ore facies, and cap or distal facies. Gold developments The work on base metal deposits naturally spilled over into precious metal exploration when the gold price was allowed to float on world money markets. Early work on elements associated with gold deposits, especially arsenic, tellurium, selenium, and mercury, pioneered more detailed geochemical work (Bagby and Berger, 1985; and Groves, Ho, and Houstoun, 1984). Geochemical patterns have been recognized around microfine gold deposits. And the study of gold precipitation patterns in modern geothermal systems has helped understand gold deposition. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, it was noticed that numerous Archean banded iron formations contained anomalous gold values. From this and other observations, the syngenetic exhalite gold model has developed. Gold deposits also occur along shears in some plutons such as the Belmoral mine in Quebec. This indicates the importance of epigenetic processes in ore formation. Shield ore settings Initial studies recognized that the major gold camps in the Canadian Shield were mostly in greenstone belts and found along "breaks," especially zones of faulting and sedimentation. Gill (1948) wrote, "Only recently, as a result of detailed mapping, has the importance of major schist zones such as the Larder Lake, Cadillac, Porcupine Creek, and Destor Breaks been recognized. These zones of persistent adjustment mark broad belts favorable for ore occurrence." The importance of shearing in ore location and regional greenstone stratigraphic position close to late sedimentary packages was clearly understood. And structural models have been further developed for some Canadian ore deposits (Hubert, Trudel, and Gelinas, 1984). In the Beardmore-Geraldton camp of northwest Ontario, the importance was soon recognized of fold noses in banded iron formation, as localizers for gold ore. Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. Today's highly mechanized Canadian open pits use state-of-the-art equipment and support technology. They are taking advantage of larger equipment, including in pit crushing and conveying, truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. Mine planning is computerized. Environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning, and equipment modifications are pursued to keep them functioning in the hostile Canadian north. In 1991, Canada's mineral production (excluding fuels but including coal) totaled $C 16.9 billion, a decline of 13.8% from the 1990 total of $C19.6 billion. It is a major producer of nickel, zinc, asbestos, potash, molybdenum and uranium. Canada is also an important source of copper and iron ore (Fig. 1).

Since Reserve Mining Co. began commercial operations at Silver Bay, MN, some 25 years ago, major improvements in taconite processing technology have become available. In addition, significant new government standards have been imposed on industrial operations. By implementing a $370-million modernization program, Reserve was able to accomplish two major company objectives: the quality of concentrates produced from the Peter Mitchell mine has improved, and the operation meets both present and foreseeable environmental standards. Process modifications at Reserve were designed to: •Reduce the pellet silica content from 9% to 5%; •Increase the pellet iron content from 62.5% to 65.8%; •Implement a tailings disposal system utilizing "best available technology" water quality controls; and •Reduce air emissions by installing "best available technology" air emission controls. By adding dry cobbing, fine screening, and flotation to the concentrating process, pellet silica content has been reduced; the process reclaims and reuses all process waters; all tailings are stored in a zero discharge tailings basin; and all air emission standards are being met. Initial Beneficiation at Silver Bay Reserve's Peter Mitchell mine at Babbitt, MN, is on the eastern end of the Biwabik iron formation. The open-pit mine is approximately 16 km long, 0.8 km wide, and presently has a maximum depth of about 50 m. Principal constituents of the ore body are magnetite, quartz, and iron-magnesium silicates. The company's large commercial plant began operating at Silver Bay, 75 rail km from the mine, in 1955. Facilities have historically had the capacity to process 31.5 Mt/a of taconite, containing an average 24% magnetic iron, into 11 Mt/a of iron ore pellets. Reserve's initial beneficiation process-which existed up to early 1979-consisted of two crushing stages at the Babbitt mine site, two additional crushing and screening stages at Silver Bay, grinding in a conventional rod-ball¬regrind mill circuit, size classification with cyclones, and concentration with magnetic and hydraulic separators. Concentrate produced by that circuit assayed 65% iron and 8.5% silica, with a screen analysis of 94% -44 µm, and a surface area of 9300 cm2/cm3. Pellets produced from this concentrate assayed 62.5% iron and 9% silica (dry basis). Construction began in 1977 to modify Reserve's operation. Process modifications were designed from pilot scale operations that had been operated and researched by Reserve for more than 10 years. There were two design restraints imposed on the process: economic constraints that Reserve continue to use much of the existing processes and structures in the new operation; and a substantial number of government-imposed permit constraints. In effect, the tailings process was designed first and then a concentrating process was developed that would "fit" the tailings disposal system. Operation of the modified process began in June 1980. Crushing Remains Unchanged No changes in process flow were made at either the Babbitt mine and crushing plant or at the Silver Bay fine crusher. Gyratory crushers reduce run-of-mine taconite to -90 mm-diam at the mine. Taconite is then transported to Silver Bay by intra-plant railroad. There are 10 fine crushing lines. Each consists of a double deck screen, followed by a heavy duty short head crusher, a second double deck screen, and second short head crusher. All screen undersize material bypasses the crushing lines, resulting in an open circuit crushing process. Fine crusher product is approximately 98% - 20 mm, 80% -12 mm, and 50% -10 mm in diameter. Each fine crusher line processes about 400 t/h of crude taconite. Cobbing Provides Aggregate for Tailings Dams The first major process change was the addition of dry cobbing, a dry magnetic separation step between the fine crusher and concentrator. Dry cobbing serves two major purposes in the new process. Its principal function is to provide large volumes of dry coarse aggregate for use in construction of tailings dams. This process rejects about 20% of the fine crusher product as tailings with a size analysis of 98% -20 mm and 50% - 10 mm. These tailings are free draining and have high frictional shear strengths-two key requirements for dam building aggregates. Fine crusher product is conveyed to a new dry cobbing building. Here crushed ore is discharged into one of two 30-minute capacity surge bins. During its modem era, the southern Powder River Basin (PRB) in Wyoming has grown from meager origins in the early 1970s to become one of the most important coal-producing regions in the United States. In 1993, production and sales of southern Powder River Basin coal exceeded 190 Mt (209 million st), or about 20% of the US coal industry. Despite the remote location of the PRB relative to its potential markets, most coal industry observers anticipate continued strong growth to meet utility compliance plans for Phases I and II of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA). This article is an overview of supply and demand issues concerning the marketing of southern PRB coal. It reviews the events leading up to the recent run on spot coal and offers a forecast of demand and prices.

Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. When pumping abrasive slurry mixtures, special attention must be given to pump design and construction. The second article in this two-part series describes some design features to consider when selecting centrifugal slurry pumps. Hydraulic Design Most centrifugal pumps are conventionally designed to achieve the desired hydraulic performance at the highest efficiency and lowest cost when handling clear fluids in reasonably clean environments. Manufacturing limitations are not imposed on the configuration of the pump, since conventional materials such as cast iron, bronze, and stainless steel are used. Manufacturers and buyers usually select the highest specific speed commensurate with the lowest cost attainable. Part life is almost infinite. When a centrifugal pump is designed for slurry service, the important factors in pump design are wear and materials of construction; size and efficiency assume lesser importance. The pump must operate at low rotational speed and the impeller has to be a truly radial flow design. These factors immediately determine that the pump must be of a low specific speed design in the range of 600 to 1800. The specific speed is a type number that is constant for all geometrically similar pumps; it designates the geometry of the impeller and casing. [ ] where n = rpm, Q = flow (US gpm), H = total head (ft), and Ns = specific speed. Since wear is a function of velocity it can be shown that for a given head and capacity, wear will increase with increased Ns. Centrifugal Pump Casing The casing has a profound effect on performance. If designed incorrectly it can destroy a large part of the energy given to the flow by the impeller, resulting in low efficiency, high hydraulic forces, and excessive wear on both the casing and impeller. In a conventional spiral volute, the static pressure around the impeller is uniform only when there is a free vortex velocity distribution in the volute, i.e., when the spiral flow from the impeller coincides with that of the volute spiral. This occurs only at the best efficiency point (BEP), between the pump's best operating zone and over capacity zone. Departure from the free vortex velocity distribution in the volute at partial or over capacities produces circumferential pressure gradients at the impeller periphery, which is directly proportional to the specific gravity of the mixture being pumped. At partial or over capacities, the flow will not tolerate the abrupt deflection at the tongue and severe energy losses and wear are created near the casing throat and on the impeller. Concentric and semi-concentric volute designs produce uniform static pressures at the impeller periphery and make the pump, much less sensitive to "off"' BEP operation. Hydraulic forces and wear are considerably reduced-eliminating the tongue prevents abrupt deflection of the flow, turbulence is minimized, and the velocity in the casing volute and throat is reduced. Good efficiency is sustained over a wider operating hand. Casings of this design are easy to cast. • Spiral volute (conventional)-Radius to the outer periphery of the casing and the volute area constantly increases. • Semi-concentric casing-Radius to the outer periphery of the casing and volute area remain constant within a certain angle. • Concentric casing-Radius to the outer periphery of the casing and volute area remain constant through 360°. The degree of concentricity must be reconciled with efficiency, hydraulic radial load, and wear for each specific speed chosen. Up to 1200 Ns the casings can be fully concentric without sacrificing too much efficiency. Above 1200 Ns, the casings can be semi-concentric. The angle of concentricity

Diesel powered equipment has been operated in underground coal fir mare than 50 years. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), there are approximately 3,000 diesel units operating in underground coal mines in the United States. This number is expected to reach 5,000 diesel units in 250 coal mines by the year 2000. Also, there are approximately 5,000 diesel units operating in metal/nonmetal mines such as trine, potash and salt mines: and more than 3,000 diesel units operating in Canada. This increased popularity of diesel powered equipment over trolley wire, electric trailing cable or battery powered equipment is because of improved safety, greater mobility, higher productivity and increased power of diesel equipment. The operation if diesel powered equipment is not without challenges. Diesel engines generate exhaust emissions, in particular carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and diesel particulate matter that must be maintained at safe levels. The chief method to control ambient exposure has been dilution by ventilation. A new concept to ensure continued safe ambient emissions levels from diesel equipment in underground mines is the EMISSIONS MANAGEMENT PROGRAM™. The program encompasses all factors that will influence diesel emissions. By ESTABLISHING low tailpipe emissions through technology, such as clean engines, clean fuel selection, exhaust aftertreatment devices and filtration of the exhaust gases via the Dry System ™, this program ensures that the baseline emissions are at their lowest technically feasible concentrations. The DST Dry System™ exhaust conditioner reduces DPM by over 98%, as demonstrated through laboratory research at the West Virginia University. Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions and odor are similarly reduced. MAINTAINING these low emissions requires an expanded training program for operators and mechanics, onboard feed-back devices and a maintenance program with special focus on events and faults that can alter emissions. Finally, an on-board emissions sampling system allows the mechanic to VERIFY emissions levels and help diagnose engine faults. If the tailpipe emissions fall outside an established limit for a particular equipment, corrective actions will be initiated.

In January 2001, French and Italian governments signed an agreement for the construction of a new Lyon-Turin railway line. This project includes a tunnel of 53.1 km length and a maximum of 2500 m overburden to be designed for a reference speed of220 km/h. The tunnel crosses major part of the West Alpine geological formations, which are very complex and contrasted in terms of the nature of rocks and the mechanical and hydrogeological conditions. In addition to the twin single-track tubes, numerous intermediary shafts, security station and intervention sites and cross passages should be built to respond to the security, operational and construction requirements. This paper describes the results of the preliminary engineering design and multiple challenges of this very long and deep railway tunnel.

This paper provides an account of the efforts undertaken to construct the Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS) project, which is a portion of a much larger program in Los Angeles, California to upgrade the city’s wastewater facilities. The project consisted of a number of elements, including both soft ground and rock slurry wall shafts, drilled shafts, soft ground EPBM mining, rock TBM mining, large diameter pipe placement, and underground structure construction. The need to complete the project under strict schedule constraints, in addition to the challenges of underground construction in congested urban areas, necessitated the work be undertaken with the proper balance of state of the art equipment, and thoughtful planning. The paper will detail the means, methods, and equipment used on the project, as well as discuss several of the unforeseen conditions encountered during construction.

The economics of precious metals -- depending upon who is involved --could be the economics of hope, of fear, indeed of profit and perhaps survival. For those investors seeking capital gains in a puzzling economy, precious metals involve the economics of hope. Those who are convinced that currency soon won't be worth the paper it's printed on turn to precious metals because of the economics of fear. Gold and silver have been a storehouse of wealth since biblical times. The economics of fear during the past 500 years on the Continent has caused almost every European family to make sure a private stockpile or hoard of gold, silver or coins is at hand in case the paper currency of their country undergoes the kind of disaster that came to the German Mark after World War I. Understandably, for mining companies involved in the production of precious metals, the elements of operations and management are directly concerned with the economics of profit -- and perhaps survival. To the American miner the price of precious metals in the marketplace is a matter of daily concern. After decades of selling silver to the US Government at 64.64 cents an ounce, producing silver mines suddenly became faced with prices breaking $5, $10 and $20 per ounce, and approaching $50 an ounce during the period 1978-1981. What should the miner expect one year in the future? Five years?

A cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) is being constructed on the AA Leach Pad at the Barrick Goldstrike Mine site near Carlin, Nevada. The purpose of the cover is to eliminate/minimize infiltration of meteoric waters into the leach pad. Laboratory and numerical analyses indicate that Carlin Formation siltstone (TCS), a locally available material, has the necessary hydrologic characteristics when placed on the leach pad to act as a CCBE. A pilot study has been conducted on a small-scale test cover placed on the AA Leach Pad to examine the cover performance under irrigated conditions. The preliminary test results demonstrate that the designed cover is capable of preventing meteoric water infiltration.

The Coronado Traffic Tunnel is a proposed two-lane, reversible, road tunnel, which will relieve severe peak hour congestion problems on surface streets. The tunnel will take traffic from the Coronado Bay Bridge to Naval Air Station North Island. The project will include 12.5 m (41 ft) inside diameter by 1,112 m (3,650 ft) of tunnel, 552 m(1,815 ft) of cut and cover box structure, and 400 m (1,315 ft) of open cut structure. The geology consists of predominately clean and silty sand, saturated sand, with some clay layers, requiring Earth Pressure Balance or Slurry Shield tunneling technology.

In mineral processing, poor froth-flotation performance translates into both an enormous loss of revenue and an unnecessary waste of the ore reserve. In this context, Bacís Mining Company developed a versatile new, high-performance flotation-cell design that can be incorporated into various flotation circuits. The main feature of this circular cell is that it is comprised of two separate sections, namely, a flotation cell that uses wash water to minimize the entrainment of fine gangue particles into the froth product and an external bubble generator that produces small bubbles of relatively uniform size at a specified aeration-rate. The air/water mixture is blended with the pulp by gentle agitation, so as to enhance particle-bubble aggregate-stability. Comparative metallurgical performance with conventional flotation cells show that the power requirements and operating costs for precious metal flotation are three times lower, while the concentrate grade is 7% higher and the recoveries of precious metals are 5% higher.

This paper describes results obtained in a test program performed with new equipment, called Mini Pilot Plant, manufactured by Canadian Process Technologies. This equipment was acquired by CVRD aiming at testing flotation circuits, in a continuous closed configuration, with samples obtained from drill cores. Success of this goal would allow CVRD to establish the metallurgical performance of mineral deposits with more confidence in comparison to Locked Cycle Tests (LCT). This paper discusses the importance of assessing the ore variability and compares results obtained in LCTs and Mini Pilot Plant. Results suggest that more reliable data is obtained in MPP test.
