The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum will hold its Ninth Annual Induction Banquet Sept. 8, 1996, at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel. Six mining greats, two of them living, will be enshrined at the event. They will join 126 other mining legends previously honored by the hall of fame. The keynote speaker will be William Perry Pendley, president and chief legal officer of Mountain States Legal Foundation in Denver, CO. Jeffrey Zelms, president and chief executive officer of The Doe Run Co., will be master of ceremonies. Richard Swayne, regional director USA for Boart Longyear Co. of Salt Lake City, UT, will introduce the speakers. Thomas Falkie, president of Berwind Natural Resources Corp. and chairman of the Mining Hall of Fame’s board of governors, will enshrine the inductees.

This paper deals with the effects of air leakage from intake to return airways through a series of stoppings on the analysis of coal mine ventilation. The mathematical model which assumes continuous leakage along adjoining intake and return airways is reviewed, and a new mathematical approach is presented based upon the concentrated leakage through individual stoppings. The procedure incorporating the new method in the analysis of coal mine ventilation networks is also discussed.

A geostatistical approach is proposed for the design of infill drilling programs. The method is consisted of three major steps: developing geological favorability models, delineating mineralization and ore envelopes, and classifying reserves or resources. Geological modeling aims at developing favorable geological zones in which drilling is designed. Modeling mineralization and ore envelopes establishes criteria on potential blocks to be drilled. Top target blocks should be those included within ore envelopes. The framework of resource categories includes five types: probable reserves, indicated reserves, indicated resources, possible resources, and barren. Indicated reserves or resources are the top priority to be drilled for the definition of minable reserves. Possible resources may be considered as targets for further exploration. The algorithms involved in the analysis include indicator favorablity analysis, ordinary kriging, and indicator kriging. A case study presented here involves a gold deposit of Carlin type. The deposit was delineated by a sparse drilling program with 230 feet of average spacing. The infill drilling program designed by the new method suggests a significant reduction on the number of holes from a regular-grid infill drilling pattern.

Atlantic Cement Company's new multimillion dollar, 10,000,000 barrel per year cement plant went into full operation in February, 1962, bringing into reality a new concept in the distribution of Portland cement. The Cerro and Newmont Mining Corporations, well established in the mineral extraction and dressing industry, backed the venture. To take advantage of the, economics inherent in single production units of large capacity, it was necessary to first find a market' capable of absorbing such large quantities. Cement can be economically shipped by rail and truck about 200 miles. Beyond' that radius from the producing facility the freight costs become prohibitive. No single marker area within that radius exists which could absorb such a large volume of cement. However, water transportation provides a relatively inexpensive method of transporting bulk products many times over such a distance. Thus, it was decided to locate the producing facility near a deep water port which had ready access both to the Atlantic Ocean and, just as important, a good source of raw material. An extensive feasibility study was made and the site at Ravena, New York on the Hudson River near Albany was chosen. Here, vast quantities of limestone in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains are found within a short distance of-the deep-water Hudson River.

Mining engineers spend countless hours and resources when designing a new underground coal mine. Their primary objective is to design the safest and most efficient operating mine with regards to coal production. A key variable often overlooked in this design stage is the slope conveyor. Typically, a slope conveyor is expected to operate with a 98-percent or higher availability. However, too often little effort is put forth by the mining engineer to optimize its design. Coal companies will rely on engineering, procurement, construction and management (EPCM) companies for the preliminary design, because the slope conveyor will be considered part of the surface material handling processes. This preliminary design will be used when soliciting quotations for the slope conveyor. Unfortunately, EPCMs may not have enough expertise with conveyors to optimize the design. This expertise is available with an original equipment manufacture (OEM) of conveyors, which ultimately may be responsible for supplying the slope conveyor. Each OEM will provide a bid package that represents what it considers to be the optimal design.

Operating mines in Wyoming and Montana, which are generally characterized by shallow overburden and thick coal seams, are faced with reclamation problems which are unique to this area. Unlike the eastern or midwestern mines, removal of thick coal seams and lack of sufficient overburden creates overburden deficiencies that require careful evaluation prior to mining to insure compliance with regulatory requirements. Computer models and computer graphics can assist in such evaluation where appropriate alternatives can be selected which satisfies both the regulatory requirements and minimizes cost. This paper presents one such model used in evaluation of backfill requirements for restoration of surface and ground water regimes, restoration of mined-out areas to the approximate original contour, and the blending of the mined-out areas to the surrounding topography.

Geologic constraints on mining and recoverability include the following: coal seams too thin or thick for conventional mining methods; coal seams with insufficient stratigraphic separation; unstable roof or floor strata; discontinuous or lenticular seams; coal seams that have high dips or are intensely faulted; water problems due to proximity of aquifers; and coal quality problems such as excessive sulfur, ash, chlorine, sodium, etc. The demonstrated reserve base for western coal of 220 billion tons is considered misleading as it does not adequately incorporate the above parameters in estimating procedures. Current reserve base estimating procedures involve an abstraction of data from generalized resource estimates. The authors believe the reserve base should be determined independently beginning with well-known deposits, with all mining and recoverability constraints fully incorporated.

INTRODUCTION In the spring of 1988 the Joint Venture of Freeport-McMoran Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, IMC Fertilizer Inc, and Homestake Mining Co. was awarded the sulphur lease for Main Pass Block 299, lease number OCS-G 9372. This was one of eleven leases awarded to the Joint Venturers. Following the initial discovery wells in December 1988, a program of delineation drilling confirmed proven sulphur reserves of 67 million long tons. Proven, recoverable oil and gas reserves are 39.4 million barrels and 7.2 billion cubic feet, respectively. Development of the sulphur mine was given approval as a fast-track project by the Joint Venturers in 1989. The oil and gas reserves were acquired from the original hydrocarbon lessee in 1990 and given fast- track status immediately. Fast-track for these projects meant design and engineering would not be complete before construction began JOINT VENTURE The Main Pass Joint Venture is one of thirteen joint ventures formed between Freeport and three other companies - IMC Fertilizer, Inc., Felmont Oil Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Homestake Mining Co., and Texasgulf Minerals and Metals Co. Felmont has subsequently changed its name to Homestake Sulphur Co. and Texasgulf assigned their interests in the three leases they participated in to their parent company. Texasgulf did not participate in the Main Pass 299 joint venture. Joint venture negotiations, anticipating a lease sale in mid-1988, began in December of 1987. This Joint Venture was the first of its kind; created to acquire offshore leases, explore, develop and mine sulphur. The Minerals Management Service announced a lease sale date of February 24, 1988 on the first business day of 1988. This greatly accelerated the joint venture negotiations. Of the thirteen leases the Joint Ventures bid on, eleven were awarded. Freeport holds its interest in all the leases through its ownership interest in Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, and Resource Partners is the operator on all of the leases. The Main Pass joint venture percentage ownership is: 58.33 Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners 25.00 IMC Fertilizer, Inc. 16.67 Homestake Sulphur Co. 100.00 The Main Pass Joint Venture paid $3,401,757 for the Main Pass lease and will pay a royalty of 12.5 percent of production value to the MMS . LOCATION The Main Pass mine complex is located in the Gulf of Mexico, in U. S. federal waters, about 27 kilometers (17 miles) east of Venice, Louisiana or 140 kilometers south east of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is situated in about 63 meters (210 feet) of water. HISTORY The Minerals Management Service (MMS) of the United States Department of the Interior administers the mineral properties of the United States located in federal waters. Periodically the MMS holds lease sales of blocks under its jurisdiction. Prior to the offshore discoveries of sulphur associated with salt domes leased for hydrocarbons, the MMS leased blocks with all minerals including hydrocarbons awarded to the successful bidder for the block. Common carbon dioxide capturing reagents, such as amines and sodium hydroxide, are expensive, toxic, and energy intensive to regenerate. We have added frothers to a sodium carbonate solution in order to increase the surface area available for CO2 transport within the packed bed of a counter current scrubbing column. Addition of frothers has improved the performance of sodium carbonate scrubbing solutions to be on par with sodium hydroxide scrubbing solutions. This novel enhancement of a relatively inexpensive CO2 capture-regeneration cycle shows potential to allow plants to turn a profit by sequestering a waste product. These results are discussed in detail in the following manuscript. INTRODUCTION The combustion of fossil fuels converts chemical energy to thermal energy. CO2 is produced as a byproduct of the reaction. 80% of the world’s electricity is produced by using this thermal energy to power a generator, accounting for 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions. In an effort to stabilize the rising atmospheric CO2 levels, researchers are investigating the application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems in power plants. [1] Efforts to capture CO2 at some power plants have been successful, but the cost of installing and operating the required equipment is high. As such, very few power plants have CCS systems. If CO2 can be captured and processed into a product that can be sold at a profit, installing CCS systems in power plants will be a very attractive business decision. In order for the sale of captured CO2 to become a profitable venture, the cost of capturing the CO2 from a flue gas must be reduced. BACKGROUND The most common method for separating CO2 from a flue gas is by passing it through a counter-current packed bed scrubbing column. The flue gas enters the bottom of a column while a solution of a chemical with properties advantageous to the absorption of CO2 is pumped to the top. The fluids interact in a packed bed, where the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid. CO2 is an acid gas, so it is common for the scrubbing solution to be alkaline in nature in order to neutralize the carbonic acid that is formed when it is dissolves into water. The exhaust exits the top of the column free of carbon dioxide, which exits the column in the scrubbing solution, reacting or complexing with the absorbent. Figure 1 is a schematic drawing of a CO2 scrubbing column. It shows the molar flowrates and compositions of the gas and liquid at the bottom [1], the top [2], and an arbitrary height in the column [Z]. [2,15] L is the molar flowrate of liquid at any point in in the column. G is the molar flowrate of gas at any point in the column. Since the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid, L and G are variable with respect to height. To simplify calculations, the CO2 free molar flowrates Ls and Gs are often used. X is the fraction moles of aqueous CO2 per mole of CO2 free liquid. Y is the fraction moles of gaseous CO2 per mole of CO2 free gas. Figure 2 is a composition diagram of the scrubbing column depicted in figure 1.

The dewatering of flocculated clay suspensions by compression in a centrifugal field has been investigated. The results are evaluated with regard to both direct applicability to centrifugal dewatering, in solid-bowl centrifuges for example, and indirect applications to gravity sedimentation systems. It is well known that sediment consolidation under gravity depends on structural characteristics such as permeability and on the "self-weight" of overlying sediment layers. An important objective of the study has been to evaluate the self-weight effect using centrifugal forces to simulate consolidation in deep sediments. In this way, small-scale laboratory tests can be used to predict the rates and limits of sediment compression in industrial systems such as thickeners and settling ponds. Experiments have been conducted in which the sediment mass and initial structure were maintained constant while the effective sediment weight was varied by centrifuging at different speeds. The effects of initial structure have also been studied using controlled variations in flocculation conditions.

In September 1855, 55-year-old Noah Spencer Kellogg and his $3 jackass named Bill discovered what was known at the time as a “blow out” of high-grade lead and silver ore. The deposit was located on the side of a North Idaho mountain high above the South Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River. The ore was later assayed at 41,141 g/t (1,200 oz/st) silver. Kellogg named his discovery the Bunker Hill Lode, after the June 17, 1775 Revolutionary War battle of Bunker Hill. A thriving pioneer settlement sprang into existence around the resulting mine’s workings and was eventually— and appropriately — named Kellogg. The peak rising hundreds of feet above the mine’s adit was named “Jack-ass Peak” after Noah Kellogg’s hairy companion.

Stratiform uranium deposits occur in Canada along the north shore of Lake Huron near the base of the Middle Precambrian Huronian Supergroup. Outcrop of the Buronian Supergroup extends for over 400 km from Sault Ste. Marie in the west eastward through Sudbury and then northeastward to Cobalt. Maximum stratigraphic thickness exceeds 5 km. The predominant Huronian rock type is metamorphosed sandstone (quartzite), with sub- ordinate argillite, conglomerate, mixtite (possibly tillite), volcanic rocks, and minor limestone, Much of the quartzite is highly feldspathic. Substantial uranium ore was first discovered in Huronian rocks in 1953 and has been exploited continuously since the initial mine-mill plant was constructed at the Pronto ore body, 30 km south of the present townsite of Elliot Lake. Only one ore body remains in production, however. It is shared by Rio Algom and Denison Mines 14 km north of the town of Elliot Lake.

In this paper a simple three-layered medium is considered. A circular hole is centrally located in the intermediate layer. The layered sheet is loaded uniaxially perpendicular to the stratification. The Young's modulus of the intermediate layer is lower than that of the outer layers. The stress distribution around the circular hole in a stratified medium is significantly different when compared to the case of a continuous homogeneous medium. The distribution depends upon the ratio of the height of [the] intermediate layer and [the] hole diameter. A comparison of stress the distribution and procedures for preparation and testing of [the] model are given. The potential of the technique is outlined.

Freeport Exploration initiated regional reconnaissance exploration programs in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the Republic of Indonesia in 1990 (see figure 1). Irian Jaya occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea. Freeport was awarded an initial contract of work which totaled 2.6 million hectares (6.4 million acres) and was subsequently awarded additional?concessions which added 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres). The concessions require work commitments and periodic relinquishments. Due to these relinquishments Freeport?s current land position totals l. 9 million hectares (4.7 million acres).

Over the past six or seven years important new ideas have been developed concerning the origin of nickel sulfide deposits. To a large extent these have been stimulated by the major nickel discoveries of the Eastern Goldfields area of Western Australia (Woodall and Travis, 1969; Ewers and Hudson, 1972). Prior to these finds, the most important nickel camps were regarded as being associated exclusively with intrusive rocks such as the Nickel Irruptive at Sudbury or the intrusive peridotites at Thompson, rocks that were thought to have no close association with volcanism. Study of the Australian discoveries, coupled with work in South Africa (Viljoen and Viljoen, 1969) and Canada (Naldrett and Mason, 1968; Pyke, Naldrett and Eckstrand, 1973), has shown that volcanic rocks with true ultramafic compositions and extrusion temperatures of 1400 to 1600°C were a common feature during the Archean. Under certain circumstances economic concentrations of nickel sulfides have formed from these rocks, either settling to the base of their associated flows or accumulating in shallow intrusive feeders to the flows. The aim of this article is to show how these ultramafic rocks can be recognized, how the nickel deposits, if present, are likely to occur within them, and what special features characterize ore-bearing examples of the rocks.

Introduction The US Bureau of Mines has designed and evaluated total mill ventilation systems (TMVS) at two mineral-processing operations. Both systems have proven proficient at cost-effectively reducing respirable dust levels throughout the mills. An 11.8-m3/sec (25,000-cfm) system installed at a clay-processing mill provided about 10 air changes per hour (acph). This system reduced respirable dust concentrations by about 40% throughout the mill building. The second evaluation was performed at a silica sand operation. Tests were performed with 23.6 and 47.2 m3/sec (50,000 and 100,000 cfm) of ventilation to the mill building, corresponding to 17 and 34 acph. Average millwide respirable dust reductions were 36% and 64%, respectively. This work was done to determine general guidelines and design criteria for operations that may be interested in implementing TMVS. TMVS should be designed to draw clean make-up air in near the base of the mill. This air provides general purging and may clear some dust-laden areas throughout the mill structure. It is discharged at or near the top of the structure. Without the TMVS, dust can exit the building through open doors, windows, etc. and contaminate outside plant workers. This dust can also be recirculated back into the mill building causing additional contamination problems. TMVS is not a stand-alone system. It is a supplemental technique to assist other localized dust control systems (Mody et al., 1987). Testing Total mill ventilation systems were evaluated at two processing operations. For both tests, the primary goal was to determine the reduction in respirable dust throughout the structure. Test site No. 1. The first evaluation was performed at a clay-crushing and screening mill in New York. The mill's base dimensions were 39.6 x 9.8 m (130 x 32 ft), giving a volumetric capacity of 4250 m3 (150,000 cu ft). The TMVS was designed to provide 12 m3/sec (25,430 cfm) of ventilation air to the mill, representing about 10 acph. This was accomplished by three 4 m3/sec (8475 cfm) roof-powered exhaustors that were evenly spaced across the roof. Three wall louvers provided inlets for make-up air at the mill's base. Two evaluations were performed at this mill. The first occurred for two days in December when outside air temperatures ranged from -12.2° to 4.4° C (10° to 40° F). Temperatures with the wind chill factor dropped as low as -34° to -40° C (-29 to -40° F) during the early morning. The second evaluation was in April when outside air temperatures ranged between 10° to 26.7° C (50° to 80° F). These two evaluations verified the effectiveness of TMVS in lowering respirable-dust concentrations throughout the mill. Gravimetric-sampler respirable-dust concentrations in December ranged from 0.22 to 2.39 mg/m3 under normal conditions, compared to 0.13 to 1.55 mg/m3 with TMVS. In April, respirable dust concentrations ranged from 0.29 to 4.84 mg/m3 under normal conditions compared to 0.21 to 2.37 mg/m3 with the system on. TMVS also increased visibility throughout the mill building. Dust reductions for gravimetric and RAM-I instruments are listed in Table 1. Each value was determined by comparing the average concentration for the entire day of testing for normal and TMVS values. The mean/standard deviation values for gravimetric and RAM-1 results were 42.5/17.6 and 37.1/16.8, respectively.

The well-known method of C. Schlumberger, Mise a la masse, has become a popular method again in ore exploration in Norway after many years of dominance by EM methods. The principle of the method is to place a current electrode within a conducting ore body and remove the other electrode to a great distance. (Figure 1). Often it is convenient to place a return electrode on each side of the area explored. The method is best suited for ores that have a conductivity contrast, relative to the host rock, of several orders of magnitude. The potential drop within the ore itself may then be neglected and the ore contact against the rock may be regarded as an equipotential surface. One may say that the ore body is electrically charged. Therefore, in Norway the method is now most often called the Charged Potential Method (abbreviated CP). The most usual way to present data obtained by CP, is to draw equipotential lines based on potential values measured in profiles on the surface. Such a potential map gives an immediate picture of the outcrop of the ore and also indicates disturbing conductors in the neighborhood. It may also be useful to look at the potential profile and its horizontal gradient along the strike axis of the potential map. These profiles may give information about the strike length of the conductor. Figure 2 shows the theoretical profiles of potential and gradient along the axis of the potential picture on the surface over a charged line plunging 15 degrees. It may be seen that the maximum of the gradient curve clearly indicates the lower end of the conductor. Figure 3 shows the corresponding pro- files over a charged line plunging 45 degrees. In this case, it is not possible to see an indication on the curve of the lower end. Only curve fitting could help interpretation in this case.

The E h potential during of a iron reducing bacteria such as Aquaspirillum Magnetotacticum (A.M.) can be predicted by a growth model. It also reflects the adsorption of Fe+2 Cu+2 and Mn +2 ions, that can be incorporated into magnetic material called magnetosomes. The Ferric ion concentration during controlled growth of Thiobacillus Ferrooxidans (T.F.) is a function of the bacteria population curve, while A. M. ferrous ion concentration is a function of the integral of the population curve. Charting of the redox potential of T.F. during batch oxidation of refractory ores such as pyrite and pyrrhotite can be helpful to establishing onset and rate the bulk bio-oxidation rate. The onset of biooxidation is marked by an increase in Fe +3 ions that can be correlated with increased growth due to adsorbed electrons.

The Earth?s population is approaching 6.6 billion people. More than half live in urban areas. And, as those figures continue to grow, the need to make wise use of the world?s natural resources as well as its living space will also grow. Thus, the concept of sustainable development ? meeting the needs of the current generation while preserving resources for future generations. The use of underground space is only one part of the sustainable development concept. But it is an important one. Tunnels and underground space are environmentally friendly and contribute significantly to sustainable development. But it takes years to plan and build tunnels and other underground infrastructure. And the demand for infrastructure in the world?s mega cities has grown significantly. In December, about 100 people representing several developed and developing nations spent a day at the United Nations (UN) in New York City discussing the future of underground space development throughout the world. The meeting was put on by the UN?s Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA). The conference was titled ?The Use of Underground Space as an Unexpected Solution for Promoting Sustainable Development.? Its aim was to promote practical solutions to the use of underground space and tunnels as feasible alternatives to promote sustainable development throughout the world. A panel of speakers from government, academia, the UN and the ITA stressed that development is not sustainable without infrastructure. And, as the world?s population grows, there is now an urgent requirement to efficiently plan for the use of underground space to preserve it for the future benefit of mankind. The benefits of the use of underground space are many, they said. Among them: ? Tunnels channel clean water in and waste water out. This promotes health and sustainability worldwide, particularly in developing countries. ? The use of tunnels and underground space helps conserve energy and increases its efficient use ? the use of tunnels cuts commuting time and so saves energy. ? Tunnels, microtunnels and other underground structures promote the more efficient use of space in large cities ? the bulk storage of water, fuel and other goods. ? Underground structures are subject to less stress than surface structures, making them safe havens for natural and man-made hazards, including earthquakes. And, because underground structures are more durable, lifecycle costs are less than surface structures. ? Underground structures promote the multiple use of available land. Land owner-ship at several layers increases land use and provides more usable space. Han Admiraal is director of the Center for Underground Construction in the Netherlands. He said that urban planners need a new vision concerning the use of underground space. Going underground protects historical and archaeological surface facilities, he said. Underground space use can also protect populations located in adverse climates. And sensitive environmental areas on the surface can also be protected from development. In addition to the transportation of people, freight and water, underground development can also store water, as well as provide storage for waste, hazardous materials, carbon dioxide and geothermal energy. The upshot of this new awareness and vision for under-ground space is that its use should be considered before surface development, Admiraal said. And planners and developers are placing more emphasis on underground space development as part of their overall development plans for urban areas. That was not always the case, he said. In the past, underground space was not considered until after the surface space had run out, he said.

There is general understanding of hoisting systems throughout the mining industry. However, the relative importance of the various parameters influencing hoist selection and utilization is not completely understood. In order to determine if these parameters can be identified and prioritized, data covering 613 hoist installations were compiled. The 613 installations represent hoisting systems in 30 countries on six continents. This study compares data to historical trends, correlates design parameters in an attempt to identify underlying selection criteria, and comments on the apparent trends in recent developments in hoist design.
