The conventional rare earth element (REE) industry has historically sought to develop ore deposits where geologic processes have produced mineralized zones with commercially attractive REE concentrations. These deposits are extremely uncommon, particularly in the USA. Given the criticality of these materials and the need for sustainable domestic supply, the current research seeks to leverage other autogenous processes that lead to concentrated REE resources. One such process is the generation of acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is very common in many coal mining districts and results from the exposure and oxidation of pyrite during mining. During the generation and migration of AMD, liberated sulfuric acid mobilizes several metal ions including REEs. Treatment of AMD is required under U.S.C §1251, the Clean Water Act, and often consists of neutralization, oxidation, and metal hydroxide precipitation. To investigate the deportment of REEs during this process, a field sampling campaign was undertaken, whereby the concentration of REEs in AMD and AMD precipitates was measured directly. In the nine sites evaluated in this study, the REE concentrations of the precipitates varied from 29 to 1286 ppm with an average of 517 ppm among the sampled sites. The individual elements were enriched compared with the associated bulk Northern Appalachian (NAPP) coal material by factors ranging from 3 to 15. Furthermore, the distribution of REEs in all precipitate samples favored the heavy REEs (HREEs) when compared with traditional REE ores. This research represents the first part of multi-part research endeavor to characterize, classify, and determine the practicality of refining REEs from AMD and its by-products.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a graphics-based computer model to assess operator visibility for continuous miners, shuttle cars, and scoops. Using digitized drawings of the machine, the program can analyze visibility for both 5th percentile female and 95th percentile male operators. This model was used to predict 95th percentile male operator visibility for two shuttle car designs. These results were then compared to those obtained from a manual assessment of visibility using the actual shuttle cars. The methods showed good correlation except for several cases which were attributed to imprecise digitization of the machines.

Machine-related injuries are one of the major safety concerns in underground coal mines. Severe injuries and fatalities occur when a miner is struck, crushed, or pinned by mining equipment such as a continuous mining machine (CMM), shuttle car, or a scoop. Proximity detection systems (PDSs) have been applied in mining to reduce these types of injuries and fatalities. All of the PDSs that are currently approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for use in underground coal mines are magnetic-field based and could be affected by metallic objects such as trailing cables. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated the influence of trailing cables on the performance of PDSs. In particular, the magnetic field coupled from proximity system generators to a de-energized trailing cable was characterized. The results show that significant energy can be coupled from the proximity system generators to a trailing cable when there is a closed loop in the cable. The effect on PDS performance from the magnetic field radiated around an energized trailing cable was also quantified for different current amplitudes in the cable. It is shown that the magnetic field caused by the electric current in the trailing cable mainly consists of a 60-Hz signal and its harmonics which causes little interference to the PDS. The results presented in this paper can help PDS manufacturers to design better systems that are more immune to these effects.

The final 1995 figures on industrial sand and gravel have not yet been compiled by the US Geological Survey (USGS). There is usually about a nine-month lag time in receiving and compiling this information. However, USGS estimates that domestic production of industrial sand and gravel will increase about 4% to 28.2 Mt(31 million st). The average unit price is expected to increase as well. The top five producers during 1995 were Unimin, US Silica, Fairmount Minerals, Oglebay Norton and Morie Co. Glass manufacturing for containers, automobiles and buildings was mixed during 1995. Containers, the largest consumer of silica sand, remained steady, with regional increases. However, silica use in glass containers face increased competition from plastic and recycled glass (cullet). It was reported that the Pepsi Cola announced plans to replace glass containers with plastic during 1996.

INTRODUCTION Radon-222 is an inert, radioactive gas formed by the radioactive decay of radium-226, a long-lived member of the uranium-238 decay chain. Radium is present in varying amounts in virtually all soils and, on the average, about 36,000 pCi (1330 Bq) of radon per square meter of soil diffuse into the atmosphere each day (UN 1977). Radon decays with a half-life of 3.6 days through four short-lived daughters to lead210 and it is these short-lived daughters[ [Ra A, (218Po, t, = 3.0 min) , Ra B, (214 Pb, t;, = 27 min), Ra C, (214Bi, t] = 20 min) and Ra C1 (214Po, t] = 2.5 x 10-6 min)] ]which cause the major health hazard associated with radon (Bale 1951). Atoms of these daughters, either unattached or attached to the ever-present particles in air, are deposited on the surfaces of the respiratory tract; alpha particles emitted in their decay can result in large doses to the cells of the bronchial epithelium lining the respiratory tract. These daughters will be present in air in varying relative concentrations depending on the "age" of the air (time since radon emanated into it) and on the amount of mixing of radon and radon daughter contaminated air with clean air. [The practical unit developed to quantify the amount of radon daughters in air is the Working Level (WL). This unit was historically related to the equilibrium concentration of 100 pCi (3.7 Bq) of the short-lived daughters of radon in one liter of air (cf. Holaday 1969) and is defined as any mixture of the short-lived daughters in a liter of air that have a-potential alpha energy of 1.3 x 105 Mev (2.08 x 10-5J) in their decay to lead-210. The working level month (WLM) was developed along with the WL, and was defined as an exposure to one WL for a working month (170 h). This is equivalent to 2.2 x 107 MeV•h•L-1 (3.54 x 10-3 J.h.m-3). If the average breathing rate is taken as 1.2 m3.h•1 (ICRP 1975), then one WLM is equivalent to inhalation of 4.24 mJ of potential alpha energy.] It is now generally agreed that the inhalation of radon daughters is the major potential radiation hazard in uranium mining, and contributes a substantial fraction to the natural radiation exposure of the general population due to the accumulation of radon and radon daughters from natural sources in buildings. Radon daughter concentrations in modern mines are controlled by ventilation, and by blocking off old working areas (cf. Simpson, 1959). However, before the hazard from radon daughters was recognized, considerably higher concentrations of radon daughters were present in some uranium and non-uranium mines. These high radon daughter concentrations resulted in an increase in lung cancers in the mining population, and it is these results that are our main source of information on the risk of inhaling radon daughters. HISTORICAL REVIEW Many excellent reviews of the history of understanding the health effects of inhalation of radon daughters are available (see, for example, Hueper 1942, Lorenz 1944, Sikl 1950, Stewart 1964, Holaday 1969, Lundin 1971, Cross 1979) but a brief summary of some of the highlights in this area may be of interest. [a] 1556: Agricola describes an unusual and fatal chest disease occurring among underground miners in the region of Schneeberg and Joachimsthal (Jachymov) in the Erz mountains in Central Europe. (It is of some historical interest to note that Agricola's book was translated from Latin into English by a mining engineer and his wife; the engineer later became President of the U.S.A.) [b] 1879: Haerting and Hesse indicated that the majority of deaths among Schneeberg miners were due to lung cancer; the lung cancers in these miners (who were incidentally not cigarette smokers) were observed twenty to fifty years after they began working in the mines. [c] 1896: Discovery of natural radioactivity by Becquerel, followed by discovery of radon by Dorn in 1900. [d] 1924: Ludewig and Lorenser report high concentrations (400 - 15000 pCi or 15 - 570 Bq per liter) of radon in the air in the Schneeberg mines and suggest that radon could be responsible for the high rate of lung cancer among miners. However, the reason why radon should cause lung cancer specifically was still not really understood up to twenty years later (Lorenz 1944). High concentrations of radon in the air in the Joachimsthal mines were reported by Behounek in 1927 and a high incidence of lung cancer among Joachimsthal miners (similar to that among miners at Schneeberg, which is only some 30 km distant but in a different political district) was noted at about the same time (Sikl 1930; cf. Sikl 1950). It is estimated that about half of the Joachimsthal miners died from lung cancer and about half from silicosis and tuberculosis (Sikl 1950). [e] 1930's and 1940's: Radioactive ores are deliberately mined in the U.S.A., Canada and other countries primarily as a source of radium for medical purposes and for luminescent dials; other radioactive ores are mined as a source of several non-radioactive minerals, while extensive uranium mining did not begin until the late 1940's. [f] 1940: Based on crude epidemiology and dose calculations, Evans and Goodman propose 10 pCi L-1 as a maximum permissible concentration of radon in continued human exposure. This is the first known recommended maximum permissible concentration for radon. This recommendation was adopted by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards in 1941 and reconfirmed in 1953. "INTRODUCTION As one of the most pressing and important political debates of this century, climate change has captured global attention and is forcing governments to take action towards decreasing GHG and carbon emission levels below what was previously thought to be necessary. With the ever-increasing price of diesel fuel accompanied by the popular topic of carbon taxes and greenhouse gas emissions, the mining industry is looking to industry specialists for assistance. The benefits of a no-idle policy reach far beyond carbon reduction and fuel savings, ranging from decreased maintenance to increased engine life. With products like battery powered A/C systems and diesel-fired heaters, going no-idle is easier today than ever before. With both systems being manufactured to withstand the harsh environments of the mining industry, the end user will see a seamless change from conventional, inefficient belt-driven systems to future, stand-alone mobile equipment HVAC. THE HISTORY OF GHGS AND CLIMATE CHANGE In 1896 Svante Arrhenius first claimed that the combustion of fossil fuels may eventually result in enhanced global warming, but not until 1955 did Gilbert Plass draw global attention to global warming by summarizing that adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere would intercept infrared radiation and thus warm the earth. Then in the early 1960’s Charles Keeling developed modern technology to produce concentration curves for atmospheric CO2 (Figure 1). In 1988 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was founded by the United Nations after acknowledgement of a rising global annual temperature. The IPCC consists of over 2500 scientific and technical experts from more than 60 countries, and because climate change could not be solved by a single country, the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated in 1998 requiring all participating countries to reduce their GHG emissions by at least 5% from the 1990 levels. The Protocol was signed by 186 countries in 2001 (since then several countries have retreated from the agreement, including the United States)."

A series of iron-leaching experiments were conducted to test the ability of metal-reducing anaerobic organisms to reduce iron from Fe3+ to Fe2+ to dissolve it from iron ore tailings. This bioleaching process involves the fermentation of biomass from Typha latifolia (a common wetland plant) to generate organic compounds, which, along with metal-reducing organisms, reduce and dissolve iron. The concentration of dissolved iron over time was studied for one year. Iron concentration above 1150 mg/L was achieved at a pH range of 3.95–5.36. Tailings from multiple locations were examined.

Diasporic bauxite from the Mugla-Milas region was mechanically activated in a planetary mill for different activation times and the structural changes were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and specific surface area analysis (BET ? Burnauer, Emmett and Teller). Non-activated and activated bauxite samples were leached directly in alkaline (Na2O) solution at atmospheric conditions and the activation procedure led to the amorphization and structural disordering of the diasporic bauxite structure, which increased the dissolution efficiency. Effects of milling speed, liquid/bauxite ratio and leaching time on alumina extraction in direct alkaline leaching of diasporic bauxite were also studied. More than 70 km of main line and service tunnels have been excavated to date for crossing the Apennines between Bologna and Florence. A new design and construction approach, known as Analysis of the Controlled Deformation in Rock and Soils, (ADECO-RS), was adopted to tackle the extreme heterogeneity of the ground and the particular stress-strain conditions. The goal of this system is to obtain constant and predictable full section advance rates, even in very poor geology, with the highest possible level of safety and reliability. The execution of this gigantic project required the mobilization of 21 job-sites, with the concurrent operation of 30 excavation headings. The global production rates confirm the high quality of the design and the high level of industrialization reached during the construction stage, levels not previously obtained in similar conditions, using other approaches such as NATM.

Caterpillar introduced 21 new products during Caterpillar Press Days ‘96, held in June at the company’s proving grounds near Tucson, AZ. The event, billed as the largest product introduction ever held by Caterpillar, was attended by press from around the world. Most of the new products were demonstrated at Caterpillar’s Tinaja Hills Training Center in the Sierrita Mountains south of Tucson. Under the scorching Sonora Desert sun, the press was treated to demonstrations of the new equipment. After a display of the equipment’s power and capabilities, the press was given an opportunity to operate the new models and, in some cases, compare them with the old.

6.1 INTRODUCTION A surface structure will suffer damage when the additional stresses induced by ground deformations associated with surface subsidence, plus the original stress introduced by construction de¬sign, exceed the strength of the structural elements. In this con¬text, there are two methods available for preventing and control¬ling surface structural damage: one is to strengthen the structure and the other is to design the mining operations such that ground deformations at the structure site can be reduced to an acceptable level. Mining operations include panel layout and mining tech¬niques. These methods are detailed in this chapter. It must be noted that most prevention/control methods men¬tioned in this chapter are used in the countries where the reference papers are cited. In the United States, the coal operators are not required to take those measures mentioned in this chapter. Some of the methods described in this chapter cannot be implemented with¬out changes in the current mining practice as permitted by laws. In addition cost of implementing those methods are not considered here. 6.2 PANEL LAYOUT As shown in Figs. 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11, permanent ground deformations in a subsidence basin mainly concentrate near the edges of the underground opening, and can be divided into four zones. A structure located in different zones will be subjected to different types and magnitudes of ground deformations. In laying out the panels, Table 5.1 and Figs. 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11 could be taken into consideration. Attempts could be made to avoid placing the structure on a location where the ground deformation to which that structure is sensitive is at its maximum. Therefore rational design of the panel is the simplest way to reduce structural defor¬mations. Panel design involves the determination of panel dimension, panel edge location, direction of face advance, and use of yield chain pillars. A. Panel Dimension Since longwalls in the US employ a multiple-entry system, where rows of chain pillars are left unmined, subsidence over those chain pillars is usually smaller. Therefore, whenever possi¬ble, the panel dimension could be designed such that a major structure or structures are over those unmined chain pillars, be¬tween adjacent panels, or some distance beyond both ends of the panels. At the center of the supercritical final subsidence basin, a structure will not be subjected to any final or permanent ground deformations. In order to create such a condition, the panel width must be such that the structure will be located beyond the major influence zone of the final subsidence basin, the minimum dimen¬sion of which must be: [ ] where L is the width or length of the final mined out gob, t is the width or length of the structure to be protected, h is mining depth and [ ] s is the angle of full subsidence. B. Panel Edge Location Wherever there is a permanent panel edge, there are large ground deformations induced on the surface on both sides of the permanent panel edge. Therefore whenever possible the panel di¬mension should be designed such that the permanent panel edges could be located in the areas with the least impacts. In terms of permanent edge location, it is best to eliminate any permanent panel edge under a structure or groups of structures. If this cannot be done, the panel should be lengthened to reduce the number of permanent panel edges, or narrower multiple panels advancing in the same direction in a staggered manner could be employed. If the structures are located in Zones II and III, the longer dimension of the structure must be parallel to the nearest perma¬nent edge (Fig. 6.1). But in Zone IV, the longer dimension should be tangential to the corner of the permanent panel edge. If the structure is inclined to the permanent panel edge, it will be sub¬jected to twisting and shearing. C. Direction of Face Advance The direction of face advance should be parallel to the long axis of the structure. But if the structure is to be located at or close to the center of the final subsidence basin, the direction of face advance should be perpendicular to the long axis of the structure. Careful choice of the direction of multiple face advance is the most effective way to reduce structural deformation and thus dam¬age. This applies the principle of overlapping and cancellations of ground deformations, due to multiple face advance, at the right time and at the right intensity, e.g., opposing tilts, concave and convex curvatures, tensile and compressive strains are induced simultaneously on the structure to be protected by two or more faces. D. Use of Yield Chain Pillars In US longwall panels there are generally two or three rows of stiff chain pillars between the panels. The combined width of the chain pillars ranges from 100 to 350 ft(30 to 107m). depending on mining depth. In general, surface movement above the chain pil¬lars after the panels on both sides have been extracted is much smaller, as compared to that in panel center. Thus in order to create critical or supercritical width of opening and eliminate sur¬face bumps over the chain pillars, yield chain pillars may be em¬ployed (Jarosz and Karmis, 1986). However if yield pillars are to be used, it must be designed such that it yields totally right after the panels on both sides have been extracted. Unfortunately cur¬rent yield pillar design techniques cannot predict when and how much it will yield. In summary, whenever possible attempts could be made to lay out the panel in such a way that surface structures are located above chain pillars between panels or above solid coal beyond both ends of the panels. In those areas the surface structures will most likely be unaffected, or if affected, the damage is so minor that no remedial measures are necessary. 6.3 CONTROLLED MINING TECHNIQUES Several mining techniques are available for reducing the sur¬face ground deformations of specific types. Commercial grade gypsum beds up to 16 feet thick is present in southwestern Indiana. The major deposits are found at a depth of 350 feet to more than 500 feet below the surface. The ore body averages about 75 to 95 percent gypsum. Two companies are currently exploiting a deposit which underlies an area of several square miles near Shoals, in Martin County. Another deposit has been located in southwestern Owen County but has not been developed. The Indiana Geological Survey is currently drilling in Greene County and is considering further exploratory work in Perry end Dubois Counties.

The Bureau of Mines' rapid method of dewatering fine-particulate slurries uses extremely high molecular weight polymers. These polymers form large, strong flocs which can be dewatered by sieving or sedimentation. However, sometimes these flocs deteriorate rapidly if water is not removed immediately. During field tests, clay slurries have been encountered that could have been dewatered economically if it were not for the rapid floc deterioration. A kinetics study was conducted to determine the rate of kaolin-PED floc degradation in which polymer addition, to bring the flocs back to their original condition, was used to determine the extent of floc decay. Results showed that the amount of polymer added, to replace polymer lost by spreading, was less for the lower PEO concentrations. For this clay-polymer system, floc breakage as judged by polymer additions followed first order kinetics. It was also found that the addition of fluoride ion stabilized the kaolin flocs.

"1.INTRODUCTIONThis paper is based on the Lee Tunnel project, which is part of the Thames Water’s Tideway Project.The client Thames Water has employed a Joint Venture of Morgan Sindall/Vinci Grand Projets and Bachy Soletanche to undertake the design and construction of the project under the management of CH2M Hill at a value in excess of £635 million ($990 million). The 3 main elements of the tunnel project are the permanent lining to the shafts, the precast segmental lining, and the secondary tunnel lining. All 3 are reinforced with different types of Dramix steel wire fibers and each element will be described in this paper. This paper will explain the basic structural design of FRC (Fiber reinforced concrete) based on the post cracking residual strength and will describe all the steps of this project, the testing program realized to support innovative design and the main technical learning point. 2.BASIC CONCEPT OF STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF FRCStructural design of FRC elements is based on the post-cracking residual strength provided by fiberreinforcement. Other cases, like early age crack-control or fire resistance, are considered non-structural use of FRC. For structural use, a minimum mechanical performance of FRC must be guaranteed. Fibers can be used to improve the behavior at SLS (Service Limit State) since they can reduce crack spacing and crack width, thereby improving durability and they can be used to improve the behavior at ULS (Ultimate Limit State) where they can partially or totally substitute conventional reinforcement in most conditions. In the design process, the definition of the performance expected from the material is a key factor and the mix-design of the material has to be optimized for the required structural performance.2.1 Testing Method In order to ascertain the structural requirements requested for the FRC segments, preliminary testing on samples will be required and the effectiveness of the proposed solution will also be assured by the testing of full scale specimens. Structural design of FRC elements is based on the post-cracking residual strength provided by fiber reinforcement. For structural use, a minimum mechanical performance of FRC must be guaranteed. Nominal values of the material properties can be determined by performing a 3-point bending test on a notched beam according to EN14651 (figure 1) or by performing the ASTM C1609 beam test:"

The use of resin-grouted cable supports to control large ground movements in several types of underground mines has increased substantially since being introduced in 1991. Cables offer several advantages over traditional support systems, having large support capacities coupled with the flexibility to be used in low openings. Cable slings have been designed to be installed on-cycle using no-spin technology or a two-piece unit that can be placed with hand-held drilling equipment. Additionally, yielding cable supports have been developed and are being used to control large amounts of movement in coal and evaporite deposits.

In a recent paper by Smith and Wen(1) the adsorption of sodium dodecylsulfate and trimethyldodecylammonium chloride on kaolinite was studied. As would be expected considering the general negative character of kaolinite, except perhaps at quite' acid pH values (2,3,4), it was found that trimethyldodecylammonium chloride adsorbed strongly on kaolinite at basic pH values. Furthermore, it was found that sodium dodecylsulfate adsorbed strongly on kaolinite at acid pH values, particularly at initial 1H values below pH 3 (final pH values near pH 4). It is interesting to note that adsorption of the anionic surfactant was strong under conditions where the kaolinite was apparently slightly negatively charged (2). The present paper reports on an extension of the work by Smith and Wen. In this paper the effects of the presence of dodecyl alcohol and sodium hexametaphosphate on adsorption of sodium dodecylsulfate and trimethyldodecylammonium chloride on kaolinite are considered.

Overexposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industry. Most other categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal noise data from 2000-2004 show that the continuous mining machine (CMM) is first among all equipment, accounting for 35% of noise overexposures. Joy Mining Machinery, in collaboration with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is conducting research to reduce noise generated by continuous mining machines. This paper describes a "JOY Designed for Noise Reduction" (JOY DNR; patent pending) tail section as a noise control for reducing the noise overexposures of CMM operators. Underground testing shows a 45% to 65% noise exposure reduction for the operator when comparing the JOY DNR tail section results to those for a standard machine. Utilizing this newly developed noise control, along with previously proven controls, will provide CMM operators an opportunity to be within the MSHA permissible exposure limit (MSHA-PEL). At the MacIntyre Development of the Titanium Division of National Lead Company a magnetite-ilmenite ore together with gabbro-anorthosite waste is mined from an open pit by shovels and trucks. The ore from the pits is trucked to ore stockpiles for blending ahead of the crusher and to free the mine from crusher delivery schedules. The ore stockpiles are blended to yield a 16.5 to 17.0 % TiO, crusher feed. This requires mining on an assay cut-off rather than a visual grade cut-off. Highly mineralized ore runs from 20 plus % TiO2 and 30 plus % Fe to 15 % TiO2 and 40 plus % Fe as the ratio of ilmenite to magnetite changes. There are three major ore types in the present pit with magnetite ratios varying from about one to one up to three times as much magnetite as ilmenite. Ilmenite and magnetite together liberate from gangue down to about 10 mesh and this is the basis of the magnetic cobbing. Below 10 mesh the ilmenite and magnetite start to separate and ore cobbing pulleys will not hold the ilmenite.
