Meramec Mining Company, owned 50% by St. Joseph Lead Company and 50% by Bethlehem Steel Corporation,- is engaged in the mining, concentrating and pelletizing of iron ore from the Pea Ridge Mine which is located in the rugged, wooded Missouri Ozarks about 15 miles from the town of Sullivan or 75 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the middle 1950's by the St. Joseph Lead Company during the Company's intensive exploration program to discover new lead orebodies to replace the declining reserves of the famous Southeast Missouri Lead Belt. An airborne magnetometer survey was run by the U.S. Geological Survey, the Missouri Survey and several mining companies, (of which St. Joseph Lead Company was the principal supporter). The survey was published in 1950 and disclosed an anomaly in the vicinity of Pea Ridge. In 1950 test drill holes disclosed that under some 1300 feet of sediments there did exist an iron deposit of probable commercial significance. No further action was taken until 1956 when additional drill holes confirmed beyond reasonable-doubt-that this was a major iron ore discovery.

In the event of a sudden nuclear attack upon the United States, it is imperative that vital command and control centers have a high probability of survival. One such vital facility is the North American Air Defense Command Combat Operations Center at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Known briefly as NOW, this installation when completed will be housed in large chambers excavated out of granite beneath the eastern slope of Cheyenne Mountain (Figure 1). The NORAD COC, a U. S. Air Force sponsored project, will serve as the primary collection and evaluation center for data concerning unknown aircraft, missiles, or space vehicles, which might bring destruction to North America. The data will be fed into high-speed computers and electronic equipment from outpost sources - radar, ballistic missile early warning stations and picket ships throughout the world. Electronically controlled display boards will make it possible to evaluate the tracking data instantaneously and to take appropriate defensive action1.

Recent work by Haas has made available information on densities and vapor pressures of solutions of differing salinities at temperatures up to 330°C. From these data it is possible to predict the behavior of volcanic exhalations of various degrees of salinity as they approach the sea floor. Particular attention is devoted to solutions of 5.0 weight per cent NaCl and 20 weight per cent NaCl, two fluids that approximate quite closely the salinities of what Roedder termed: (1) normal hydrothermal fluids and (2) fluids typical of stratiform deposits of low-temperature conditions of origin. It is apparent that solutions above 220-230°C. cannot reach a sea floor on which the depth of water is 600 feet or less in the liquid state but will boil at some appreciable depth beneath the sea floor. Such boiling would result in the precipitation of all constituents of the ore fluids of significantly lower vapor pressure than water. The principal such constituent would be salt, and no sulfide deposits, the major constituent of which is salt are known. It follows, therefore, that ore fluids probably never get close to the sea floor of shallow seas at temperatures high enough to permit boiling. Ore fluids significantly above 230°C. can reach the sea floor in the fluid state only if the depth of the sea in the area. in question is well above 600 feet, for example, solutions at temperatures of ±300°C. reach the sea floor in the liquid state only if the depth of sea water is slightly over 3000 feet. Ore fluids reaching the sea floor at such depths may be the parents of such fluids as the Red and Salton Sea brines. On the basis of these data, the Cyprus and Kuroko deposits are discussed.

"Foreword by Emily SarverAssistant professor, Mining and Minerals Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VAThe Mineral Processing Division hosted its fifth Student Poster Contest during the 2014 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Salt Lake City, UT – and, by all accounts, it was a huge success! This year, the contest more than doubled in numbers of individual entries and schools represented. A total of 30 students participated, including 23 graduates and 7 undergraduates, representing 13 US and international institutions: Colorado School of Mines, Michigan Tech, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Montana Tech, New Mexico Tech, South Dakota School of Mines, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Virginia Tech, West Virginia University, Autonomous University of Chihuahua (Mexico), UNAL Medellin (Colombia), University of British Columbia (Canada). In addition to constructing their posters, students submitted abstracts and gave short oral presentations highlighting their research. Based on tallied scores from all three components of the contest, the judging panel selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at the undergraduate and graduate levels, which were announced during the MPD Luncheon on February 26.In the undergraduate division, University of Utah’s Lucas Pich was awarded the 1st place prize for his poster “Solid-liquid mixing studies in lab-scale flotation tank using electrical resistance tomography.” His extended abstract is included in this issue of Minerals & Metallurgical Processing. Joshua Chidester, also of Utah, won 2nd place for his poster presenting “Evaluation of detectors for radiotracer RTD measurement by MCNP.” And Lucas Rojas-Mendoza, of UNAL Medellin, took 3rd place for his poster on “Preg-robbing in Colombian gold ores.”In the graduate division, 1st place went to Caelen Anderson, of the Colorado School of Mines, who also placed in this contest in 2012 and 2013! The 2nd and 3rd place prizes were awarded to Jacob McDonald and Joseph Halt, respectively, both of Michigan Tech. Extended abstracts describing the work of these up-and-coming researchers are also included in this issue.The 2014 Contest was chaired by Emily Sarver (Virginia Tech) and Lisa Schlink (Freeport-McMoran Copper and Gold, Inc.). Paste is a high density mixture of water and fine solid particles with a relatively low water content (10-25%) such that the mixture has a consistency as measured by the ASTM slump cone test from slightly greater than zero up to nearly 12 inches (305mm). Particles of different size classes will not segregate or settle when the paste is not being agitated or when it is stationary in a pipeline. Cement may be a component of paste. Larger particles of aggregate can generally be added to a paste without greatly changing the pipeline transport characteristics. A paste may bleed water slightly when it is allowed to be motionless for periods of up to several hours, but the solids do not become so dense that the paste cannot be easily re-fluidized. The dividing line between the definition of a high density slurry and a paste is not sharp. It is a practical matter that must be considered when designing a pipeline transportation system. If the pipeline is very short, there is very little risk of plugging the pipeline with a high density slurry when flow is stopped for short time periods. With longer pipelines the mixture must remain stable without motion for periods as long as several hours to avoid pipeline plugging. The fine particles in a paste mixture can be composed of mine tailings or naturally-occurring clays, silts and fine sands. The mineralogy of the particles thus can have a wide variety from quartz and feldspar to clays, micas and even salts.

It is a common observation that objects having, different; temperatures exchange energy by radiative transfer. The quantity of radiant energy emitted by an object is a definite function of its temperature. Therefore, a measurement of emitted radiation, by means of a calibrated radiometric instrument, provides a temperature measurement without contacting the emitting object. The physical laws describing radiant energy transfer and their application to remote temperature measurement form the substance of this paper. The energy radiated by bodies having temperatures up to 4000°C is largely in the infrared spectral region. The infrared spectral region is that part of the electro-magnetic spectrum having wavelengths longer than visible light and extending to the microwave region. The wave-lengths range from 0.7 micron (1 micron = 10-4 cm) to 1000 microns. In general, infrared radiometry deals, with the methods of measuring energy flux in the 1 to 15 micron region of the infrared spectrum.

The results of an experimental study of polymer-induced flocculation of clay suspensions in continuous, stirred-tank reactors are presented. The effects of polymer dosage, mixing time and mixing intensity are shown to be generally similar to those observed for equivalent batch systems, but flocculation appears to be generally less effective in the continuous process. Settling rates are lower and supernatant turbidities are higher for the continuous system. It is postulated that non-equilibrium effects due to simultaneous polymer adsorption and floc growth can be exploited so as to enhance flocculation in batch systems. The nature of the continuous process, however, offers less opportunity for taking advantage of such effects. Conditions in a continuous flocculation system inherently lead to a closer approach to equilibrium.

Large scale surface mining has a major impact on land use. Without reclamation, abandoned mining sites are usually less productive than before mining. With increasing and completetive land use demands in the United States, it becomes increasingly evident that multiple land use should be considered for all areas that will be mined, with special emphasis on coal, sand, gravel, and stone. The mining of these commodities affects the largest land areas and the latter two are commonly mined near population centers where high land-use pressures justify serious consideration of multiple use. Typically, sequential use will mean restoration of the mined land or at least transformation of the land into a useable state. Determination of land reclamation capability is a viable approach to planning reclamation of surface mined land. The natural resource base--geology, soil, and water--controls the type and intensity of land-use practices which can be sustained following mining. Evaluating physical limitations can eliminate consideration of uses which would severely impair the environment or which are impractical. This approach provides for an environmentally and economically sound land use at very little cost. In addition, it can save or make money for the mining company and landowner. Sand and gravel is an especially significant resource because it is mined throughout the entire country and commonly extracted near cities. Increasing urban growth and industrial activity require increased supplies of sand and gravel. This translates into expanded surface mining and an increase of disrupted land. Oftentimes this land is within an urban area and has potential for real estate or water-based activities. If Campbell County, Wyoming were an independent nation, it would rank fifth in the world among countries with known coal reserves. Only the United States, Russia, mainland China and West Germany would have greater volumes available. Not too many years ago that statement would not have seemed important, because oil and natural gas had become our nation's principal fuels. Western coal deposits, particularly those of the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming, and which underlie virtually all of Campbell County, were largely unknown. But recently, in response to the three-pronged stimulus of vanishing gas reserves, rising petroleum prices, and clean environment statutes, these vast deposits have been delineated and have become, in the minds of many, indispensable to our goal of energy independence. Not only does western coal lie in thick seams near the surface where it can be mined in huge quantities at low cost, but also it possesses another coveted attribute in this age of environmentalism: low sulfur content. At Burlington Northern we count ourselves at the forefront of those who believe this coal is essential to any hope for the government's "Project Independence." But to that belief we add another article of faith. We are convinced the economics of unit train delivery of this incredibly immense resource make it the only transportation system that can help us achieve energy self-sufficiency in this country.

The final cost and quality of a project employing equipment, labor, and materials is dependent upon the expediency and extent to which each of these parameters are used. An ideal solution then, would be one in which three solvable equations were given for each particular situation. The equipment, labor, and materials could then be solved for, and the perfect job would result. In reality, however, the ideal and most economical solution is seldom attainable by solving three given equations. Therefore, knowledge, experience, and sometimes guesswork must be relied upon when correlating equipment, labor, and materials. Drilling and blasting, in particular, is one operation which normally involves more uncertainty than other operations. It is also an operation in which the outcome is extremely critical for two reasons. First, the cost of the operation that follows drilling and blasting is dependent upon how well the material is fragmented. Second, once the drilling and blasting has taken place, it is impossible to return to the area, without considerable expense, and correct any mistakes that might have been made. Therefore, what is desired is a method by which drilling and blasting operations can be performed yielding optimum results at the lowest cost; this can best be accomplished by having the relationships between equipment, labor, and materials prior to their use. For obtaining best results, the selection of these three relationships must be based on knowledge, experience, and as little guesswork and uncertainty as possible.

New, large sulphur deposits were discovered in Poland in 1953, the result of investigations by the National Geological Institute. All deposits occur in a widespread Miocene evaporite unit in the Carpathian foredeep. The gypsum underlying impermeable Sarmatian clays was altered to limestone and native sulphur where penetrated by hydrocarbons and bacteria. All deposits occur in Miocene structural uplifts. The early determination of the genesis of the sulphur deposits and their occurrence in elevated blocks led to an exploration program that successfully located new deposits.

Disruption in critical minerals supply chains has resulted in the evaluation of various types of mineral deposits for critical minerals potential. Much of the study on critical minerals focuses on occurrence and characterization, but little research has addressed what concentrations of critical minerals in a mineral deposit are required to make an exploration target into an operating mine. Understanding the cut-off grades of ore deposits being actively mined is one criterion to determine if concentrations in an exploration target are high enough. Cut-off grade is defined as the minimum amount of mineral contained in a ton of ore that is sent to the processing plant. Among many factors, cut-off grade depends upon the size and type of the deposit and mining operation, the processing technique, and market prices. This research does not aim to define cut-offs for determining if a mineral deposit is economic. Rather, it defines estimates of concentrations of critical minerals that could be considered good enough for further exploration. For example, ~2% total rare earth oxide (TREO) is the cut-off grade for Mt. Pass carbonatite, but 500 ppm TREO could be an exploration target for coals.

A 1995 RETC paper of similar title presented a method for estimating rock tunnel water inflow based on semi-empirical correlations with borehole water pressure tests. Since that time the author has found the method to be very useful, and it has been used by others in the industry. This current paper is an update which is intended to: A. More clearly explain assumptions and limitations of the method. B. Describe some case history examples. C. Respond to questions which have been raised; and extend the method to other considerations including distribution of inflow along the tunnel, panning requirements, interpretation of tunnel probe hole water inflow, and estimation of potential effectiveness of pre-excavation grouting to reduce water inflow.

This paper presents the authors? personal experiences in the design and operation of moly separation circuits in copper-moly concentrators. Topics discussed include column cells versus mechanical cells; use of nitrogen; use of CO2 and sulfuric acid for pH modification; and general equipment selection and sizing. A benchmarking of main operating parameters for industrial plants is presented. Upgrading curves for commercial column and mechanical cleaning circuits are also presented, showing that with average flotation kinetics and rougher concentrate grades, technical grade concentrates can be easily achieved with five column cells operating in counter-current configuration.

Portland, Oregon’s $370 million West Side Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnel Project has completed the final phase of construction and commissioning. The construction contract, which began in September 2002, was a reimbursable cost plus fixed fee contract that followed a qualifications-based contractor procurement process and apre-construction planning phase. This paper addresses the final results of the contracting method and provides a lessons-learned case history. Specific items addressed include the benefits realized from the contracting method, areas of improvement, final costs compared to the original contract estimates, design changes and schedule impacts, and subcontract management issues.

The former Homestake gold mine at Lead, South Dakota, has been selected by the National Science Foundation as the proposed host site for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory. The deep laboratory and associated research campus will be developed at approximately the 7700-ft level. Plans also include the development of the Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory at the 4850-ft level. After the mine?s pumps were shut off in June, 2003, water levels rose to approximately the 4650-ft level by early 2008. Pumps in the 8150-ft deep mine were turned on again for dewatering in April, 2008. Instrumentation is being installed in the mine to measure water-level declines during pumping, for later analysis of permeability and related hydraulic properties of the formation. Pressure-sensitive transducers and data loggers will provide real-time information on water levels that will be available to interested parties. Quality of the water also will be monitored as it is pumped from the mine. I

Experience has shown that, since the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, over-compaction of spoil during the reclamation process has severely limited tree growth on reclaimed land. Researchers at the University of Kentucky have conducted a ten-year investigation at a surface mine in eastern Kentucky that monitored the changes in selected spoil physical characteristics for various reclamation and compaction alleviation methods. More specifically, research plots were developed for reforestation that employed three different levels of compaction and two different methods of ripping for overly compacted spoil. Each year measurements were made in the field of dry bulk density, using a nuclear density gage, and maximum penetration depth, using a recording cone penetrometer. In addition to good correlation between tree growth and selected spoil characteristics, the data demonstrated a gradual convergence of the measured spoil characteristic data over the study period.

This contribution presents a methodology how to quantify froth zone recovery in a continuously operated laboratory mechanical flotation cell. The methodology consists of relating the overall flotation rate constant to the froth depth of the flotation cell. As a result, a froth zone recovery factor (Rf) can be extracted. This froth performance parameter has been studied as a function of the flotation cell operating variables. By understanding the effect of these operating variables on Rf, an integrated methodology for modelling froth zone performance in batch and continuously operated laboratory flotation cells has been proposed. The Rf modelling is based on a semi-empirical approach which considers a number of parameters to be used. Some of these parameters may have physical significance, i. e. they may be easily and physically measured. The modelling approach consists of taking into account the interaction between the pulp and froth zones. This interaction allows froth zone recovery (Rf) to be predicted. The whole modelling exercise process lies on auxiliaries relationships which indicate the dependence of the parameters with the operating conditions of the flotation cell. This contribution is part of a larger project that deals with the modelling and optimisation of flotation plants (Project P9L, 2000).

Twin 1250 m (4100 ft.) long highway tunnels through Cumberland Mountain near Middlesboro, Kentucky are planned to be completed in the early 1990's. The tunnels will be excavated in sandstones, limestones, and shales, dipping at 35 to 50 degrees and striking nearly perpendicular to the tunnel alignment. In 1985-86 a pilot tunnel was excavated as a crown drift along the alignment of the southbound tunnel. The benefits of the pilot tunnel in reducing uncertainties for main tunnel construction are discussed. The cost-benefits of the pilot tunnel are examined in view of estimated main tunnel costs.

Dr. Roussey Roussev The use of chemical additives on grinding is of significant importance considering the high energy consumption of grinding processes. My research indicates that the dispersant approach explains the effects, in this particular case of wet grinding. Further, the dispersant approach combined with torque measurements give the possibility of clarifying the mechanisms involved when using grinding aids. I find the conclusions derived from the data obtained to be correct and useful for grinding. In general, I agree with the explanations. However, I would like to discuss several additional points that I consider to be important, and in the same time to mention some of my own results from investigations similar to those presented in the study under discussion. The "bed volume concept" and the change of slurry viscosity explain adequately the data plotted on fig. 3, in conjunction with Figs. 1 and 2. However, the significant increase of the average torque in the case of 83% solid with XFS-4272 introduces the necessity of establishing the optimum of percent solid when dispersant is used. For example, the optimum percent of solid for different materials varies. One of the reasons is the material's mass density. On the other hand, it is necessary to determine the concentration of the chemical used. Because of this, it would be interesting to know how the cited concentration was selected. The supportive discussion and verification by Dr. Roussev, with results similar to that of the paper, is appreciated. I will try to answer the additional questions he has raised. To begin with, the mill was fitted with six lifters of approximately one-quarter inch height. There has been extensive lab and plant level work to understand downstream influences of using dispersants like XFS-4272*. In sulfide ore processing, which is the area in which most industrial scale testing has been performed with this approach, neutral to positive influences have been observed. For example, positive effects (e.g., increased recovery) have been noticed in flotation operations involving ores that have a tendency to produce excessive slimes upon grinding. (1) Also, the use of a dispersant has been shown to demonstrate a positive influence on classification by improving the sharpness of separation and preventing a decrease in d50 value that usually accompanies increasing flow rates to classifiers.(2) The biggest potential downstream problem is in thickening, which at the dosages involved, has not been a problem in plant scale usage. The commercial price of dispersants like XFS-4272 is quite variable depending on source, concentration, etc, but a typical cost of XFS-4272 to achieve a 10% increase in throughput in industrial mills has been between 20 and 35- US per ton of feed ore (1981).
