Experiments were conducted to evaluate the response characteristics of commercially available gas, smoke and flame sensors to fires of common combustible mine materials. The experiments were conducted in the large-scale fire gallery located at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory in Fairchance, PA, using ponderosa pine, red oak, Douglas fir, high and low volatile coals, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) conveyor belts, No. 2 diesel fuel and diesel exhaust. All the experiments (except those using No. 2 diesel fuel and the diesel exhaust tests) were conducted in a similar manner, with combustible materials heated rapidly by electrical strip heaters, producing smoldering fires that quickly transitioned into flaming fires. The sensors included a diffusion-type carbon monoxide (CO) sensor, photoelectric- and ionization-type smoke sensors, a video smoke/flame detector and an optical flame detector. Simultaneous measurements were obtained for average gas concentrations, smoke mass concentrations and smoke optical densities in order to quantify the levels of combustion products at the alert and alarm times of the sensors. Because the required sensor alarm levels are 10 ppm and 0.044 m-1 optical density for CO and smoke sensors, respectively, the different sensor alarms are compared to the time at which the CO and smoke reached these alarm levels (Litton et al., 1991). In addition, the potential impact of using smoke sensors that have met the performance standards from accredited testing laboratories is also evaluated using the response of an Underwriters’ Laboratory (UL)-approved combination photoelectric/ionization smoke detector. The results are discussed relative to fire sensor needs that can have a positive impact on mine fire safety.

In a minerals-recovery context, the object of exercising control over milling operations must be threefold, 1) To achieve maximum recovery at 2) minimum operating costs and 3) making maximum use of installed equipment, Milling is one of a sequence of operations which have as their objective the economic recovery of minerals from mined ores, All operations in the sequence are interdependent and each is both influenced by and itself affects all other unit processes. The part which grinding plays in achieving each of the above objectives is indicated in the following analysis: In South Africa, the most important mining operations are still the gold mines, A vast reservoir of knowledge and experience in treating the Witwatersrand and associated ores has been accumulated. and recoveries are consistently high, However residue values do vary and frequently this is due to fluctuations in the degree of grind, The significance of changes in residue values is indicated by the following example: On a modern mine, the residue values varied from 0,25 to 0,33 dwi; per 2000 lb, during a period of 6 months, The cash value of the gold thus lost varied therefore between $0.44 and $0.58 per 2000 lb, ton. A residue which assays 0.30 dwt per ton would contain approximately 0.26 dwt as undissolved gold and 0,040 dwt per ton as dissolved gold present in residual solution after filtration. This dissolved gold loss is a function of efficiency of filtration and varies from 0.030 to 0,.070 dwt per ton of residue.

The Maybell Mill of, Trace Elements Corporation, Unit of Union Carbide Corporation is located approximately five miles northeast of Maybell, Colorado, and twenty-five miles northwest of Craig. It is located in the midst of the uranium ore deposits whose presence, made it possible. In November 1953 Russel Cutter, Chief Geologist for the original Trace Elements Corporation, picked up high readings on a scintillometer while flying over this area. Later, with George Morehouse, Chief Engineer for the original. Trace Elements Corporation, he started a search for surface indications. In this search, they found an out crop which can be regarded as the discovery lode on this property. The actual locating of claims and acquiring free lands and state lands was begun in March 1954. During 1955 enough drilling was done to indicate that a sufficient tonnage of ore existed to make possible a mill. These ore deposits are located in the Browns Park formation which is an unconsolidated sandstone with a few hard lime ribs running through it. The geologists tell us that this region was once a vast basin which became filled with wind blown sand and volcanic tuff, Later on, ground waters brought uranium into the basin which precipitated out in the sand. During the late summer and fall of 1955, a small pilot plant was operated under the supervision of John L. Chapman testing these Browns Park ores. During the operation of the pilot plant, three small open pits were developed and the ore from these pits shipped to Union Carbide Nuclear Company, Division of Union Carbide Corporation, at Rifle. To date all ore is being mined from open ptis. In the fall of 1956 the original Trace Elements group signed a contract with: the AEC for a mill at Maybell and on November 5, 1956, Union Carbide acquired the Trace Elements Corporation properties and contract. During the next two months, intensive research was carried out on the Browns Park ores by our research lab at Rifle. They also checked some of the metallurgical results which had been obtained through the operation of the pilot plant by the original Trace Elements group. During this period, a report on Trace Elements Corporation ores was also prepared by the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation. This report contained data on representative samples of the ore tested for the original Trace Elements group. From this research and study a flow sheet was decided upon.

Background In the mining industry, conversion of fine particles into a slurry is often part of the normal processing of the ore. Therefore, from a system's point of view, slurry transporta¬tion would be considered as a natural alternative, all the way from the working face to the final processing. In underground mines, there is sometimes a considerable inflow of ground water that has to be pumped out. When the mine dewatering installations are integrated with a hydraulic hoisting system, the cost of power needed to pump out the ground water can be excluded from the cost of hoisting, compared with other modes of transporting the solids to the surface. The chief advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the hoisting capacity can be increased at comparatively low total cost without necessitating the sinking of new shafts. Alterna¬tive examples include deepening of the existing mechanical hoisting system, truck, or conveyor belts transport in ramps to the present level. These often become very expensive. The economic effectiveness of hydraulic hoisting and hydraulic design considerations have been discussed by Kostuik (1965) and Sellgren (1985, 1986) for both small shallow mines and large deep underground mines. Objective and scope The objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasi¬biliy of hydraulic hoisting in hypothetical examples of mine deepening. Underground grinding to a maximum particle size of about 700 um (about 25 mesh) is considered. The pumping of ground ore products with positive displacement plunger or membrane type of pumps at working pressures of up to 15 MPa (2200 psi) is a thoroughly tested technique (Venton, 1986). Hydraulic hoisting system A hydraulic hoisting system is described schematically in Fig. l . The ore is mined, handled, and crushed conventionally. It is then ground wet underground. The slurry is then tempo¬rarily stored in an agitated tank and pumped to an agitated receiving tank on the surface. The ore is then further processed in the concentrator. The capacity of a pipeline is very high. For example, an annual production of 500 Kt (550,000 st) of ore can be handled in a 100-mm-diam (4-in.-diam) pipeline. Systems layout - economic effectiveness Schematic mine layouts are presented that represent situ¬ations where hydraulic hoisting often is the most economical alternative. A situation where the ore is trucked to the level of the existing hoisting system is shown in Fig. 2 (following page). With hydraulic hoisting, only a shaft for ventilation, pipe¬line, and personnel are needed. Introduction Clearly, many problems confront the minerals industry today. Yet, at the same time, there is too much energy spent bemoaning the negative effects of difficult economic circumstances, low metals prices, and adverse government policies. These are factors that cannot be altered by individual mineral company reactions. In fact, as we look to the future, the only thing we can be certain of is that we will continue to be faced with uncertainty. Thus, an area that demands close scrutiny and that can significantly affect a company's performance in the future is the posture it adopts to deal with uncertainty. This paper looks at how strategies are developing to deal with this issue. It also examines some of the implications that implementing such strategies have for the role of the individual explorationist. Elements of strategy Whether mineral company strategies are based on diversifying or retrenching, on emphasizing primary production or downstream integration, there seems to be increasing agreement that in the current environment strategies must have several features. They need to be information-based - developed out of access to timely and complete data and analysis about proposed directions and competitor activity, rather than simply following a current fashion. They need to be flexible - adaptable in light of changes in the marketplace and an unpredictable industry. And they need to be cost-efficient - making the most of limited resources. Whether a company is looking for gold financing opportunities, acquiring polymetallic prospects, or doing grassroots exploration for diamonds, these three elements are increasingly essential. They not only allow the company to pursue its current goals most expeditiously, but also open it to hearing and using feedback in the most constructive way. The company can then improve or change strategy as it proceeds. And it can be best positioned to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. These elements of strategy place great emphasis on the skills of the individual. The need for critical intelligence and the reduced amount of capital available to manage are making it more obvious that exploration is a "people" business. This is in accordance with a general trend in many sectors of industrialized economies, reflecting the widely discussed shift from smokestack to information-based industries. Increasing the odds There is a direct connection between successfully implementing the approaches to strategy discussed above and encouraging and improving the quality of work of the individual explorationist. To illustrate the importance of this, some commonly quoted figures on the odds of discovery success can be used. These figures are arbitrary but illustrative. Assume that one out of 100 exploration prospects actually turns out to be a promising ore body, and that one out of 1000 becomes a mine. Based on our research, chances are the most of those

The Rødsand Gruber mining company is a subsidiary of the Norwegian industrial corporation Elkem AS, and its mine is situated in the northwestern part of southern Norway. The ore from this mine is a relatively low grade, magnetite ore with a small amount of vanadium. The ore bodies are very irregular in shape, resulting in a high amount of waste rock intrusion in the stopes. The annual underground production in the mines is approximately 1 million t. Because of varying dimensions of the ore bodies, both transverse and longitudinal stopes are employed. The inclination of an ore body is usually 1.04 to 1.59 rad (60 to 90°), and the horizontal width varies up to 100 m. Sublevel stoping has been the traditional mining methods in this mine. Until a few years ago, the ore was primarily blasted using horizontal blasthole fans drilled from Alimak raises. Recently, however there has been an increasing demand for a les expensive mining method. Alternate systems were considered, and finally a method based upon large blasthole stoping was found to be the most suitable. GENERAL LAYOUT The general layout of a stope is shown in Fig. 1 As with all the figures in this chapter, only the prin¬ciples of the method are emphasized and the details may not be valid for any particular site in the mine. In transverse stopes, the horizontal width of the ore determines the length of the stopes. The average length is approximately 50 m, the width of the stopes is 20 m, and there is a 10-m wide vertical pillar between. The distance between the main levels is 60 m. Usually a horizontal (sill) pillar 10 m thick is left below the mucking level. Each stope is first undercut along the entire stope length. This undercut is made with 50.8-mm (2-in.) diam drill holes in a fan pattern. At the moment this is being done by a trackless Atlas Copco Promec jumbo equipped with two Cop 130 pneumatic rock drills. The drill drift is 4 X 4 m, and the crater is 20 m high. This leaves a 36-m stope height to mine with large blastholes. To achieve a fair portion of vertical drilling withlarge blastholes, there are two parallel drill drifts at the top of each stope. These drifts are 4 m high and 9 m wide, separated by a 4-m wide pillar in the middle of the stope. To ease the drilling of perimeter holes, the drifts extend 1 m into the vertical pillar on each side of the stope. The pillar will thus be only 8 m wide on the drill drift level, but 10 m wide down the rest of the stope.

The work to date indicates that Vertical Crater Retreat Stoping is one of the safest methods of underground hardrock mining today, and is competitive with all other forms of stoping in terms of cost and productivity. The problem of the freezing of moist raw materials, such as concentrates, in railroad cars during winter shipment has been a continuing source of both economic and operational trouble to the industry and to the railroad companies. The difficulties center around the discharging of frozen cargoes into the plant materials handling system. Because of cargo freezing, appreciable delays in car-dumping schedules occur each winter and cause additional expense for demurrage charges and for slowdown of plant operations. In one plant during one winter, a car dumper rated at 40 cars per day could dump only 3 cars per day in bad weather. Delays became so serious one winter, that 500 cars held in the yard became so badly frozen, that they were sent to the southern part of the United States to thaw after they accumulated an average of two months demurrage charges. These delays in car unloading become critical if unit or integral train concept is applied to the movement of raw materials. Anticipated savings in transportation costs through better equipment utilization are largely based on rapid loading and unloading cycles of whole trainloads. If freezing problems cannot be adequately solved, unit train operations cannot be operated to achieve the potentially large reductions in transportation costs. The freezing problem may tend to become even greater in the years ahead, because the unit train concept will allow the trains to run faster and consequently the heat loss will be accelerated due to the larger heat transfer coefficient. A compensating factor, however, will be the shorter travel time. Further, the sources of raw materials being mined are located farther north than before and the ambient temperatures during transit are going to be lower.

Diesel engine particulate matter pollution is a matter of concern currently in underground mines worldwide. A number of real-time Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) monitors have been developed in recent years; two of these by the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) in the US. One, the D-PDM, is based on an adaption of the successful NIOSH?s Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) unit which is being taken up very successfully for mine respirable dust monitoring. The D-PDM measures all particulate matter within a sub-micron range as classified nominally at 0.8 micrometers by a purpose developed cyclone. The other, the FLIR Airtec, measures the Elemental Carbon (EC) component of DPM by a laser scattering approach. Both instruments have been evaluated underground in robustness and reliability testing in coal mines by the authors. Real time DPM monitors allow greater understanding of the sources and levels of DPM pollution in underground activities. They allow engineering evaluations to determine how conditions can be improved or mining personnel relocated to lower concentration levels. Studies are discussed that examine DPM concentrations from vehicles under varying ventilation conditions. Some of these concern tests undertaken during high activity longwall face moves. They focus on evaluating DPM during the various phases of the face Chock Shield moves. An initiative in some mines has been to limit the number of vehicles in the mining section or panel by the use of a Tag Board or Traffic Controller at the panel travel road entrance to manage exhaust DPM and gases. Diesel tags or tokens are used to control the number of vehicles entering a section or panel and so limit level of pollution. Summation of DPM levels from points monitored throughout a panel demonstrates increasing DPM levels from influence of additional equipment in series within the ventilation circuit. An alternative approach is to invest in underground continuous real-time monitoring of exhaust gases, DPM and section air quantity and integrate this information to determine whether an additional vehicle can enter without exceeding diesel target limit. This optimizes the access of diesel vehicles and replaces the existing manual tag board system. Real-time DPM monitoring allows the industry to pin-point high exposure zones such as those encountered where various vehicles work in areas of constrained or difficult ventilation. Identification of high DPM zones allows efficient modification of mine ventilation, operator positioning and other work practices to reduce underground miners? exposures.

The Lafayette Bluff tunnel, currently under construction for the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), will be among the widest highway tunnels in the United States. The 199-meter tunnel is being constructed in a closely jointed, variably weathered diabase rock mass. Cover above the tunnel crown ranges from 4 meters to 27 meters, and is less than the tunnel excavated width of 18.3 meters for about 60 percent of its length. These factors dictated special support and lining design, limitations on excavation sizes and required sequences for support installation. Tunnel excavation is by controlled blasting, with multiple top headings and bench. Rock support and lining consists of external portal beams, rockbolts and reinforced shotcrete. A final concrete lining provides structural support for the rock mass and the membrane waterproofing system.

The goal of the project reported in this paper was to make recommendations for changes in roof bolting procedures and bolter design that would reduce roof bolter accident rates. To that end the project identified the major hazards associated with each task a roof bolter operator per-forms, normalized task accident frequencies. by the time spent on each task, reviewed equipment design features and operating procedures related to the identified hazards and developed recommendations for equipment and procedural changes that would reduce, if not eliminate, the hazards. Proximity detection systems (PDSs) for mobile machines have the potential to decrease injuries and fatalities. Early adopters of the technology have identified some challenges, which present an opportunity to explore and improve the integration of mobile PDSs in underground coal mines. The current research study applied the task-technology fit framework to investigate the fit between mobile PDS technology and mining relative to health and safety, from the perspective of leaders at two coal mines. Quantitative results from the study show that mine leaders evaluated mobile PDS favorably for training and ease of use, system feedback, user authorization and experience, and less favorably for safety, compatibility, task completion, and reliability. Qualitative results reveal specific task, mine, and system characteristics that may have influenced leaders’ evaluations. The study includes considerations and suggestions for safe technology integration

Three rock tunnel sewer systems are underway in the Chicago Area. (Figure 1) The three are designed to act independently and to be later connected to the future tunnels of the master plan. The tunnel excavation for each of the systems has been completed. One is in the Northwest area within the City being built by the City, known as the Lawrence Ave. System. Another is in the Southwest suburbs, known as the LaGrange-Brookfield Sewer or Southwest 13A, being built by the Sanitary District, the third is in the South suburbs called the Crawford Avenue sewer or Calumet 18-E, Ext. A- being built as a joint venture between the City and the District. The three are similar in that they have the same purpose, the same component parts and their tunnels were constructed in the nigaran limestone using a mechanical mining machine. The purpose of each of the systems is two-fold. First to provide flood relief for existing inadequate sewer systems, and second to reduce the pollution load to the waterways caused by combined sewer overflows. The existing systems in the areas to be relieved are combined sewers built many years ago. The main outlet for the Village of LaGrange, for example, was built in 1908, is badly in need of repair and lacks the capacity to handle the flood flow from the heavily urbanized area it now serves. The importance of coal as a major source of energy used by the steel industry has been increasing due to the gradual changeover from steel- making by the open hearth process to steelmaking by the basic oxygen process. Since the production of steel by the BOF process increases the demand for hot metal, there is a growing need to ensure the supply of coke required for the production of hot metal. Coal used for cokemaking has become, therefore, an increasingly important raw material for the steel industry in recent years. Our current projections indicate that coal will be the source of 71% of the total energy requirements of Inland Steel Company in 1985. As a result of the energy shortages of the last few years, various conservation programs have been initiated by the steel industry to reduce the consumption rate of fuel. The efforts to conserve energy have been successful to a great extent due to the rapid advances made in the technology of ironmaking that facilitated gradual reductions in the quantity of coke used per ton of hot metal produced in the blast furnaces. The decrease in the consumption rate of coke was made possible by the use of improved raw materials, such as iron ore pellets and fluxed agglomerates, the operation with high blast temperatures, the injection of auxiliary fuels, and the enrichment of the blast with oxygen. It is expected that additional reductions in the fuel consumption rate will be possible in the ironmaking operations of the large blast furnaces that are being equipped with facilities for proper burden distribution and for operation with higher blast temperatures at high top pressure. The purpose of this paper is to show the effects of coke quality on the production of BOF steel. The importance of coke quality will be pointed out by discussing the effects of the physical strength of coke on both the blast furnace productivity and the steelmaking operations of an integrated steel plant, such as Inland Stee1 Company.

During 1963 more than 200 million tons of coal was consumed by the public utility industry. Ash residual, from the burning of this coal has caused disposal problems. In order to prevent air pollution, dust collection systems have been installed to suppress the fine ash emitted from boilers before it is discharged into the atmosphere. The collected ash, called fly ash, must be removed from the dust collection facilities and disposed in some manner, usually at a substantial cost to the utility. Many years ago fly ash disposal was not a serious problem because the demand for power was relatively low and coarse coal was burned on stoker type traveling grate machines. The low burning rates utilized on these grates did not produce large quantities of air-borne coal ash while the mechanics of this system of burning resulted in a clinkered residue of cinders. Both of these conditions resulted in the production of only small quantities of fly ash. As the demand for electricity increased, a method of burning pulverized coal was developed and was introduced to the public utility industry in 1918 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.1 This method of firing was considered a significant advance in steam electric generation as it (1) permitted the use of coals that could not be economically fired by other methods and (2) has generally resulted in improved efficiency, greater generating capacity and lower costs.2 The utilization of larger generating units using pulverized coal substantially increased the quantity of fly ash which resulted in a' more severe disposal problem.
