One of the most difficult problems in mining operation is how to determine optimum cutoff grades of ores at different periods over the lifespan of the mine that will maximize the net present value (NPV) of the mine. Cutoff grade optimization maximizes the NPV of a project subject to capacity constraints in the mine, mill and the market.. This paper describes the determination of a cutoff grade strategy based on K. Lane’s algorithm adding an iterative optimization factor calculated for every year during the live of the mine to maximize the project’s NPV. The introduced algorithm is a windows based program developed at Virginia Tech which coded in visual-basic within a spreadsheet environment (Excel). The resulting cut-off windows based program is a user-friendly tool which calculates interactively different mining cutoff grade scenarios. The benefits of the methodology are demonstrated using a hypothetical case study. The authors have observed an improvement of the total NPV using this iterative approach using a year by year optimization factor.

The Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota, commenced operations in 1876. As is the case with old, deep, continuously developing mines, a ventilation improvement is periodically required to maintain acceptable underground environmental conditions. Recent historical improvements at Homestake include a 5.2m diameter air shaft driven in the 1960's and a 2.1 MWR (580 ton) chilled water plant installed in 1978. By 1983, it became apparent that yet another ventilation upgrade would be needed to keep pace with accelerated development in the deepest mining sections. A study was therefore undertaken to project ventilation requirements for the next ten years and to select the method(s) most suitable to meet those requirements. The study called for a two-phase approach in which air flow and air conditioning were carefully balanced. Phase I, the installation of a new 2240 kW surface fan and several underground circuit changes, was completed in 1986. This paper describes Phase 11: the planning, design, installation and initial performance of the air-conditioning portion of the upgrade.

Fertilizer-grade phosphoric acid with a P2O5 concentration of 50% should contain less than 1.5% Fe2O3, otherwise, the P2O5 water solubility of the fertilizers prepared from high-iron acids will be low. High-iron Egyptian phosphate concentrates fromAbu-Tartur and Sebaiya- West were leached with sulfuric acid and recycled phosphoric acid to produce 50%-P2O5 phosphoric acids containing 4.0% and 2.7% Fe2O3, respectively. The high iron contents were reduced to the industrially accepted limit of 1.5% Fe2O3 by precipitation with potassium sulfate. The factors affecting the effi¬ciency of the precipitation process, e.g., temperature, time and K2O/Fe2O3 ratio, were systematically studied, and the optimum conditions were achieved. The clarification of the prepared phosphoric acid from iron-containing sludges was also investigated by varying the time and temperature. The utilization of the separated sludges as fertilizer and recovery of P205 by pulping in water were also evaluated.

Introduction Potassium, together with nitrogen and phosphorous, is an essential nutrient required for growth. Since all living things need potash, the major demand for potash - about 95% of the total - is as a fertilizer. Agricultural productivity has increased dramatically in recent times. This increase in crop yields requires substantial amounts of added nutrients to keep the soil fertile. It follows then that potash will always be in demand. There is no substitute. Other fertilizers that contain phosphorous (P) and nitrogen (N) are complementary and not competing products. Fireplace ashes (pot-ashes) have a relatively high potassium content. Their value as a fertilizer had been recognized for centuries. But today's potash industry did not begin until deposits of potassium-rich ore were discovered and exploited in Europe during the 19th century. Canadian potash development Potash in Saskatchewan was first recognized in 1943. It was discovered as a byproduct of an oil exploration program. But it was several years later before the existence of a major commercial deposit was acknowledged, and not until 1951 that the first attempt at development occurred. That attempt was unsuccessful. The shaft flooded and was abandoned. It did, however, demonstrate the need for new technology to penetrate the waterlogged Blairmore layer. This was eventually developed and the first mines were brought into production in the early 1960s. Once the technology was available, and the extent and quality of the potash beds became known, a number of companies proceeded to develop mines. By 1970, seven mines were in operation and three more were nearing completion. Combined, total capacity then was 7.6 Mt/a (8.4 mil¬lion stpy) K20. At that time, world potash consumption was about 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy). This increase in supply from Canada produced a large potential surplus that shattered the prevailing balance between supply and demand. Although world demand increased steadily throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, it was several years before world supply and demand were again in balance. Saskatchewan capacity has been expanded a number of times. It now stands at 10.7 Mt/a (11.7 million stpy) K20. Actual production has not approached this figure, however. Two new mines in New Brunswick have recently been built with a combined annual capacity of 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st) K20. Total Canadian capacity of about 12 Mt/a (13 million stpy) now amounts to 30% of world capacity. Central offshore marketing organization Canadian Potash Exports Ltd. (Canpotex) was created in 1970 as the offshore marketing organization for Canadian producers. Canpotex is owned by Saskatchewan producers and is their exclusive marketing organization for offshore business. Each company handles its own sales in Canada and the US, but all sales to other markets are handled through and by Canpotex. The Saskatchewan industry has an ore body of a size and consistency unmatched anywhere in the world. Large efficient mines have production costs that compare favorably with other producing countries. On the minus side, Saskatchewan is remote from most major markets. It therefore needs the ef¬ficiencies that stem from one organization that coordinates all offshore shipments and minimizes distribution costs. Agriculture guides potash market In the period following World War II, potash was a classic growth industry. World demand increased each year from 1945 to early 1970s. Since then, demand has been more erratic. Some years show substantial increases, but are followed by significant declines. For about the last decade, the pattern has been unclear and future demand has become correspondingly difficult to predict. North America and Europe together account for about 40% of the world potash consumption. In both areas, farming is characterized by surplus production, declining crop prices, and expensive government support programs. Under those circumstances, farmers respond by minimizing input costs. Fertilizer is one of the items they reduce. Potash is retained in the soil. It is possible to reduce potash application with no immediate deterioration in crop yield. Extensive deposits of kyanite occur in the southeastern United States, The reserves of these deposits, if developed, are adequate to supply the United States with 35-mesh kyanite concentrate:; for many years at the present-rate of consumption, According to Espenshade and Potter,1 the kyanite-quartz rock type deposits in this area contain about 100 million tons of ore averaging 10 to 30 percent kyanite. The tonnage of kyanite-bearing gneiss and schist is, much larger than the tonnage of kyanite-quartz rock, but the kyanite gneiss and schist are appreciably lower in grade. The largest deposits of kyanite-quartz rock are in the Farmville district, Virginia, and Kings Mountain district, North Carolina South Carolina, and at Graves Mountain, Georgia. Of the known deposits, only four were being mined for kyanite in 1967. These deposits are near Farmville and Dillwyn, Va., Clover S. C., and Washington, Ga. Production of kyanite and synthetic mullite increased substantially in 1965.2 Output of, domestic kyanite concentrate increased by 14 percent in 1965, establishing a record high for the fifth consecutive year. Estimated annual consumption of kyanite minerals and synthetic mullite was in excess of 100,000 tons. The manufacture of mulatto refractories accounts for most of the kyanite minerals consumed annually, but non-refractory uses are expanding.3 Most mullite refractories are used as furnace linings in metallurgical and glass manufacturing furnaces. The remainder is used largely for kilns, kiln furniture, and saggers by the ceramic industry. Small quantities of kyanite without calcination are used as a source of alumina in the manufacture of glass, electrical and chemical, porcelain, pyrometer tubes, and in the form of kyanite concentrate to increase the alumina content of fireclays. Kyanite is used to improve workability, increase strength, and to compensate for firing shrinkage in floor and wall tile and other ceramic products.

In most open pit operations mining porphyry type deposits, production planning rests on an are reserve inventory block file which is derived from diamond drill hole data. With such a practice, the way by which block values are generated is critical and in the recent years many studies deal with the comparison of different estimation methods for block grades (Mueller, E. (1), Knudsen et al (2) (3), Barnes, (4), Williamson and Mueller (5). Typically in such studies, one selects a bench or a group of benches where there is a "sufficient" number of blast holes (BH) with assay values in each of the blocks (generally 30.5 x 30.5 m (100 x 100 ft) or 15.2 x15.2 m (50 x50 ft). Then the arithmetic mean of the BH values in each block is computed and it is assumed to represent the real block grade against which different estimated values are compared. However it is sometimes observed that the variation of these BH values within a block is high and that their arithmetic average may significantly differ from the real average grade of the block (Barnes (4). The problem of the precision of the mean BH grade in a block has been examined by Williamson and Langlois (6) in an experimental way. They strove to find a better estimate of the average block grade than the mean BH grade but their results were not conclusive. The purpose of this study is to investigate the same problem within the frame of geostatistical models (David (7). Besides practical results obtained with these models, two general points are emphasized and illustrated in the text. First, "good results" are obtained if "good geostatistics" is done (David et al (8).

Rare earth elements (REEs) have many critical uses in advanced technology and the lack of a reliable domestic supply has been identified by the US DOE as a vulnerability to US economic security. Our research focuses on developing an economical process for extracting REEs from coal fly ash and power plant wastewater sludge by coupling a hydrothermal extraction process with the engineering of a ligand-associated media for concentrating REEs from the extraction liquid. Ash samples have been collected from two Detroit-area Power plants that burn 100% low sulfur coal (Trenton Channel) or fuel blends of 75% low sulfur coal and 25% high sulfur coal or 70% low sulfur coal, 15% high sulfur coal, and 15% petcoek (Monroe Power Plant). Ash samples are then subjected to hydrothermal conditions from 100-350 °C for 1-24 h at Los Alamos National Laboratory and leachate concentrations are measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) and compared to hydrofluoric acid digestion results. Experiments designed to aid in ligand selection and loading optimization show that di-(2-ethylhexyl)methanediphosphonic acid (H2DEH or DIPEX™) can be successfully loaded to a commercially available swellable organically modified silica (SOMS) media. Preliminary results show that DIPEX-associated SOMS surface loading can exceed 4x on a mass/mass basis and in simplified sorption experiments with Nd solutions (~pH 2), the DIPEX-SOMS media can sorb >90 mg Nd per g of media. Recovery of the sorbed Nd with low pH solutions has had low efficiency with the high (4 g DIPEX/ g dry media); however, near complete recovery was achieved with lower surface loadings (0.05 g DIPEX/ g dry media). Column experiments are being conducted to evaluate the optimal ligand/media ratio for repeated use. Completive sorption with Fe and other major cations are also being evaluated.

"The two track road sector between Cisneros-Loboguerrero (having a length of 14 km and 11 short unidirectional tunnels) is a new highway still on construction located along the existing Highway Buga – Buenaventura (Colombia). Due to the steep topography, difficult geological/geotechnical conditions, the traditional portal construction approach was impossible to be implemented in eleven (11) of the twenty two (22) portals. In this specific project, the skewed portal approach was developed as the optimal and more effective solution. The construction time and costs of portals were reduced in 21 months and 75%, respectively. At the same time, the natural equilibrium of the slopes was maintained, thus, facilitating adequate safety factors along the useful life of the project. This document pretends to show a detailed design experience (and the construction of the entry portal of tunnel 11 (left)). INTRODUCTION The Cisneros-Loboguerrero project is a 14 km length dual lane highway, connecting productive zones with the Pacific Ocean along the current Bogota-Buenaventura highway as shown in Figure 1. The project is located at the northern side of the Dagua River Valley. The preliminary design suggested constructing portals under challenging topographical conditions, i.e., slope cuts having heights between 50 to 100 m (some having slopes > 100%) requiring complex developments and having very high risks.The entry portal of tunnel 11 (left) was the first portal successfully built by implementing the skewed portal approach. Later, this approach was used as a model for the construction of the other ten (10) portal having similar topographic and geotechnical conditions. The development of this new alternative provided a considerable reduction on the construction time of portals, thus relieving a critical path in this project."

The Miami mine is located near the town of Miami, Gila County, Arizona. The Miami mine started mining in 1910 and finished in July, 1959. The orebody was divided and mined as follows: Tons High Grade 24,400,000 - Top slicing, sub-level caving, etc. Low Grade 105,100,000 - Block caving Mixed ore 9,800,000 - " Low Grade #2 13,100,000 - " Total Mining 152,400,000 GEOLOGY Ore minerals are largely in pre-Cambrian Pinal schist intruded by tertiary Schultz granite porphyry and covered to some extent by Quarternary Gila conglomerate. The structures are highly faulted and shattered. The Miami fault on the east cuts off the ore and the Pinto fault on the southwest caused re-oxidation of enriched sulphides producing mixed ore. MINERALOGY The chief mineral is chalcocite, with chalcopyrite, bornite, covellite, malachite, azurite, chrysocola, cuprite, native copper, and molybdenite as minor minerals. The ore minerals occur in seams, veinlets and disseminated particles. In block caving there is always some dilution, and drawing of ore stops when the grade drops past an economical point. This results in a small amount of copper left in the stopes below the capping. There is some copper in the capping, probably below 0.03% or less than 0.6 lbs. per ton. Over the low grade #2 orebody and portions of the high grade there was an oxide capping which was not mined. The crushed pilars are another source of copper. The leaching at Miami is an attempt to recover this last remaining copper of a worked-out mine. The enrichment at the Miami mine had gone more nearly to completion than most ore bodies in the southwest. There is practically no pyrite in the capping and very little in the ore.

The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 3,200 tons of ore per day with an average gold grade of 0.4 opt. The mine has a large horizontal extent of 2,500 feet by 500 feet and a vertical extent of 20 to 200 feet. High density of joints occurs within the host rock. Based on Rock Mass Rating and field observation, the Leeville ground conditions are characterized as poor to very poor. As such, heavy ground support is required for the mining operation in Leeville. Ore zones with a height in excess of 10 m (35 feet) are considered for longhole stoping. A typical stope measures 6.0 m (20 feet) wide, 30 to 55 m (100 to 180 feet, depending on the ground conditions) long and 10 to 30 m (35 to 100 feet, depending the thickness of ore body) high, yielding 10,000 to 20,000 tons when completed. Narrow ore zones, less than 10 m (35 feet), are mined using cut and fill. These drifts are 4.6 m (15 feet) wide by 4.6 m (15 feet) high. Based on the afore-mentioned poor ground condition, the establishment of a ground control monitoring system is key to operating both safely and successfully. The ground control monitoring system is composed of comprehensive instrument design and installation. Instruments include Multi-Point Borehole eXtensometers (MPBX) and Stretch Measurement to Assess Reinforcement Tension (SMART) cables. The monitoring system covers the mining zones and infrastructure openings. After about two year?s applications and measurements, useful data has been and continues to be collected to use in future stope and infrastructure structure design. Introduction The mining industry has been using computers since the late 1950s. Despite this early start, the use of mine planning software is not a common practice in many operations. But the trend might be changing because of the availability of relatively inexpensive personal computers (PC). The introduction of these machines has generated unprecedented interest by mine managers to computerize their planning operations. However, some managers have become disappointed with the PC's lack of adequate software and the inability to handle the massive amounts of information required for modeling. This paper is an attempt to shed some light on the future of computers in the mining industry. It will examine: • historical progress in the computer industry, • future advances in the computer industry, • historical usage of computers in mining, and • future alternatives available to mining. Historical Progress The computer industry has come a long way since the first full-fledged electronic digital computer Electronic Numerical Integrator And Calculator (ENIAC) was built in 1946. This machine weighed more than 27 t (30 st). It contained 19,000 vacuum tubes, occupied 139 m2 (1500 sq ft), and could perform 5000 additions per second. By contrast, today's fastest, commercially available computer is the CRAY-X. It weighs less than 5 t (6 st), has no vacuum tubes, occupies less than 9 m2 (100 sq ft), and performs over 100 million operations per second. This is an incredible advancement in less than 40 years. One person commented on the rate of advancement in the computer industry. He suggested that if the auto industry had advanced at the same rate as the electronics industry, we could buy a Rolls Royce for $2.75 and it would run

A couple of years ago, one of the major television networks produced a series on the environment. One episode in the series dealt with the nation's solid waste problem and some of the research being done to solve it. It was interesting to listen to one researcher who was attempting to develop a glass that when broken would dissolve in water. It was said that using this glass would eliminate over 100 million tons of solid wastes each year. At first glance, it would appear that this research-effort would make a significant contribution to environmental pollution control; however, if one pauses to consider the water, he can see that this solution to the solid waste problem may well contribute to a water pollution problem. The dissolved material must either end up in our surface streams or be removed in waste treatment systems. Either alternative may have a more adverse effect on the environment than the original problem. With today's emphasis on the environment, it is important that the effects of our activities be studied in depth. Then, by properly planning the activity, the adverse effects can be minimized. The coal mining industry 100 years ago was in the same boat, as our glass maker, is today. Unfortunately, it too failed to consider all the effects of its activities and as a result, in Pennsylvania, there are over 5000 miles of streams adversely affected by coal mine drainage. The situation is improving, however, because mine operators are beginning to recognize and accept the methods for controlling coal mine drainage. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the measures for the control of coal mine drainage and to set forth the factors that affect these controls.

Twenty-five years ago, when I began my sales life marketing minerals, there was little or no contact between sales people and production people. In those days, it was not uncommon for me, as a salesman, to learn of production problems existing in my company from my customers. Today, in my opinion, any successful mining company must keep production people fully aware of circumstances that effect service to the users of the product. Basically, feldspar is presently consumed by the glass and pottery industries the same as 100 years ago. The consuming public little realizes the origin of so many things they use daily and take for granted. Feldspar is utilized in the glass that contains our Coca-Cola, Pepsi, wines, liqueurs, beer and the assorted gob¬lets from which we drink these lovely brews, the industrial glass upon which all industry depends, the bathroom plumbing fixtures that make life so different from the days of the out-house, the beautiful and durable china we enjoy at mealtime. The electricity we use requires insulators that demand feldspar. In our home ap¬pliances, automobiles, toys and airplanes, we find feldspar. I could go on and on, hopefully soliciting your help in making our taxpaying and non-taxpaying fellow man aware of the burdens he may acquire when unthinking, over-enthusiastic environmentalists foist unnecessary hardships upon the mining industry. Feldspar is marketed primarily sized from 20 mesh to 325 mesh. The glass industry requires feldspar ground 20 mesh to 40 mesh size; the pottery industry requires material from 150 mesh to 325 mesh size. One large glass plant may require up to 100 tons per day and more, whereas a small plant may use less than 5 tons per year. From a gathering storm of climate change based legislation that could potentially overwhelm the mining industry, to the nuts and bolts of mineral processing and just about everything in between, about 100 mining and mineral processing professionals heard it at all at the 60th annual Colorado MPD Meeting April 22-24 at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, CO. With a sweeping agenda under the banner ?What in the world is new in mining and metallurgy? attendees were treated to four sessions and 21 presentations that covered the range of mining industry issues. Bill Reid, president, chief executive officer and director of Gold Resources Corp., spoke about his company?s El Aquila gold project in Mexico. With five projects in Mexico, Gold Resources Corps. is aiming to become a low-cost gold and silver producer. Its flagship property, the El Aguila gold project, is a high-grade gold and silver property with significant base metal credits of copper, lead and zinc. Production of the El Aguila project was targeted for mid-2009. Reid said that three high-grade deposits have been discovered at the El Aguila project. They include the high-grade ?manto? style El Aguila openpit deposit, the El Aire high-grade polyme-tallic vein system, which is underground, and the underground La Arista high-grade polymetallic vein system. The project is located 120 km (75 miles) south-east of the capital city of Oaxaca, Mexico. Reid said the property has yielded several exceptional gold and silver surface samples, including a 36-g/t (1.1 oz/st) gold sample and a 3,100-g/t (90 oz/st) silver sample. The Grasberg copper-gold deposit was discovered in the spring of 1988, one year before the planned closure of Freeport Indonesia's original Ertsberg openpit copper mine. In spite of Grasberg's remote location, 600 m (1968 ft) above the Ertsberg, atop a hitherto inaccessible mountain, Freeport-McMoRan brought its latest open-pit mine into production in the last week of 1989, less than two years after discovery. Freeport Indonesia's (FI) copper-gold mining operations are located in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of Indonesia on the western side of the island of New Guinea. Fl's six ore deposits are all located within a 10- x 10-km' (3.9- x 3.9-sq mile) Contract of Work area. They are all between the elevations of 2900 and 4300 m (9515 and 14,100 ft) above sea level, some 96 km (60 miles) from the island's southern coast. A 118-km (74-mile) access route connects FT's port site of Amamapare on the Arafura Sea to the project area. The first section is an 18-km (11-mile) barge waterway. The final 100-km (63mile) is a two-lane gravel highway. The highway terminates 9 km (5.5 miles) beyond the FI townsite at the project's central mill, some 2850 m (9250 ft) above sea level. The mining areas are separated from the mill by a 780-m (2560-ft) sheer cliff face. The world's longest free span tramway system, with a total length of more than 1.6 km (1 mile), is the only means of access for men and materials between the mill and the surface mines. Weight restrictions for the tramway for equipment considered for the project are 15.4 t (17 st). The minimum clear width dimension of two tunnels along the portsite access road is 5.6 m (18.4 ft).

The Acid Mine Drainage has characteristics of low pH, high concentrations of heavy metal ions, such as Fe2+, Mn2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+. In this paper, the composite particles that consisted of bentonite and steel slags were used to dispose the Acid Mine Drainage. Bentonite is the mineral materials and can adsorb heavy metal ions excellently. The steel slags are alkaline and industrial solid waste for the treatment of the Acid Mine Drainage. The main influencing factors, such as adsorbent dosages, shaking rates, concentrations of heavy metal ions, temperatures, adsorption time and pH value were studied by the static experiment. Increasing the adsorbent dosages and the concentrations of the heavy metal ions, speeding up the shaking rates, raising the temperatures, extending the adsorption time and improving pH would improve the removal efficiencies of heavy metal ions. Through considering the removal efficiencies and the treatment costs, the optimum reaction conditions for the four kinds of heavy metal ions were obtained. The adsorbent dosage 21 mg/L, the rotational speed 120 r / min, the temperature 25?, adsorption time 100 min and the initial wastewater pH 7. The four kinds of heavy metal ions existed independently in the simulated mine wastewater. The highest initial concentrations of Fe2+, Mn2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+ were 150 mg/L, 100 mg/L, 170 mg/L and 140 mg/L respectively. The removal rates were 93.42%, 92.64%, 93.86% and 95.17% respectively. The determination of the particles’ SEM-EDS Microscopic characterization showed the composite particles could play a part in neutralizing, absorbing and the chemical precipitation. The acidity decreased notably and the heavy metal ions of Fe2+, Mn2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+were adsorbed and precipitated effectively. The research results can extend the practical engineering application of the composite particles.

In an attempt to replace the traditional cyanide process of extracting gold, a new technology using ammoniacal solutions has been developed. In this study, the electrochemical behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions at temperatures above 100°C has been investigated. An electrochemical cell in an autoclave has been introduced to carry out this study. The system consists of a gold working electrode, a platinum counter electrode, and an external saturated calomel electrode (SCE) which is connected to the autoclave system through a Birch wood plug. Techniques used in this study included potentiodynamic polarization, galvanostatic polarization, cyclic voltammetry, and Tafel polarization. The electrochemical reaction mechanisms governing the dissolution process are presented.

Recent research has shown that enhanced gravity separators provide the opportunity to effectively clean I mm x 37 micron coal. At Southern Illinois University, a detailed experimental program was performed on a continuous Falcon Concentrator, which was found to achieve separations at mass throughput capacity values in excess of 100 tonnes/hour. The apparent particle separation density for I mm x 73 micron coal was about 1.60 with relatively high efficiency (Ep = 0.12). Typical ash and sulfur rejection values of 85% and 70%, respectively, were achieved while recovering 85% of the combustible material. Metallurgical and efficiency data from the evaluation are presented in this publication.

Concentradora "Dana Aida" (100 t/d capacity) was built in 1971-1972 to treat dumps and ores containing mixed oxide-sulfide copper-gold-silver minerals from two veins. The veins, Don Felipe and aria are about 150 m apart, but are distinctly different mineralogically. The deposit is near San Juan de Guadalupe, Durango. Mexico. All new process equipment was manufactured locally, in or near Torreon, Coahuila. Sampling, ore testing, flowsheet design, plant design, drawings purchasing, financing, etc. was planned and directed by two engineers. Construction was executed by local miners and common labor (largely agricultural). The paper presents detailed costs for equipment and construction. The subsequent breaking-in operation is discussed.

A system based on seismic techniques has been developed to detect and locate men trapped underground following a mine disaster. Both theoretical and field studies have been used to generate models to predict the performance of the system. For a strong source, it is almost certain that the miner's signal will be detected if the geophone array can be positioned over a likely area of entrapment. After signal processing, it is highly likely that the location of the miner can be determined within an accuracy of 100 ft (30.5 m). The system is presently operational in a state of readiness in the event of a mine disaster.
