In the period of time allotted to this paper, an attempt will be made to cover a great deal of territory, figuratively speaking, as far as our experience with ammonium nitrate is concerned. In giving this subject the "broad-brush" treatment, it will be necessary to generalize on the major points which at the same time will permit me to avoid, to a great extent, any involvement in the purely technical and theoretical aspects of blasting. The practice of theorizing before a new idea is tried has practically been discontinued in our organization simply because experience has shown that, almost without exception, theories have fallen aside as some new development takes its place. In regard to blasting, logic and experience seem to have little place in this phase of quarry operations. As the use of low cost blasting agents was introduced in our operating practice, a man who had no previous experience in the field of blasting but with sound knowledge in safety procedures was given the responsibility of supervising the drilling and blasting operations. A total lack of experience is not ordinarily recommended as a prerequisite to assuming the responsibilities of a supervisory position. However, in this case it was obviously a wise decision because there were no pre-conceived ideas as to what techniques would or would not be successful.

The control of quartz levels in the respirable dust requires an approach different from that used to control respirable coal dust. The unique physical properties of quartz have to be utilized when developing quartz dust control systems. Also, techniques that modify the surface properties of quartz dust so that conventional dust control measures are effective should be explored. For instance, the wetting characteristics of quartz can be modified so that the capture efficiency of the quartz dust can be improved. Foam sprays assist in modifying surface wetting characteristics. This paper summarizes the results of a study that was conducted in an operating mine to evaluate the effectiveness of a compressed air foam spray system installed under the boom of a continuous miner and directed so as to cover the pan and the gathering arm. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the effect of the foam underboom sprays on (1) the respirable dust concentration in the ambient air, (2) the quartz concentration in the respirable dust. The engineering design of the foam generation and delivery system is described in the paper, followed by a description of the mine and the dust sampling strategy. The data were analyzed to study the effect of foam on respirable dust and quartz concentrations at the miner cab, face return and the intake. The results of the data analyses and costs are presented in the paper.

The longwall simulator is a design simulator incorporating both deterministic and stochastic methods to calculate: (a) the size and density of support; (b) the cutting force, power requirements and haulage speed for the loader-shearer; (c) the conveyor size, speed and power requirements; and (d) delay generation at head and tail-gates and the longwall face.

To obtain a reliable comparison between conical and cylindrical separatory vessels used in dynamic dense medium separation systems, the following studies were made: (1) study of the swirling flow in conical and cylindrical vessels using laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV); (2) study of the behaviour of suspensions of magnetite and ferrosilicon in water in both separators. It was found that: (a) the tangential velocity profiles differ in conical and cylindrical vessels: in a conical cyclone free vortex conditions affect the largest part of the vessel, while in a cylindrical vessel, the motion approaches that of a forced vortex, i.e. that of a centrifuge; (b) the conical vessel manifests higher centrifugal acceleration and very strong densifying; the density differential, and hence the density gradient inside the vessel is large; (c) the cylindrical vessel manifests lower centrifugal acceleration and low densifying, i.e. low density differentials, and hence, the density gradient inside the vessel is small; (c) due to greater densifying, the density cut-point in cyclones is higher than the operating medium density, while in cylindrical vessels the density cut-point is closer to the medium density. The results provide an interesting description of the differing behaviour of conical and cylindrical vessels and help explain the differences in performance between the two types of separators.

A massive roof fall occurred in a small room-and-pillar coal mine. The roof falls occurred under a barrier pillar in a closed coal mine located a short distance above the active mine. The extensive fractures connected the active mine with the old mine, turning them into a “combined mine.” Since completely sealing off the roof fall area is prohibitively expensive for the mine, ventilating the connected old mine became the only option. A comprehensive investigation was conducted to understand the atmospheric condition in the old mine and to find an efficient way to ventilate the “combined mine.” A set of studies involving geology, gas content, pillar stability and mine subsidence were performed to explore whether the closed mine is filled with an explosive air-methane mixture. The air quantity measurement data were used to determine the resistance of the air path formed through the fractured zone. Observations and measurements made from a tour to the underground and mine surface enabled the formulation of simple but effective ways to ventilate the old mine. The ventilation network analysis also suggested methods of control, so that sufficient ventilation air can be directed to the two parts of the old mine.

The content of the paper by V. Rajaram does not fulfill the expectations of the title. But Rajaram submitted the article in October 1983, and he could not have foreseen the numerous developments that would occur before his paper was published more than two years later. Nevertheless, Rajaram failed to mention the interest in oil shale development in southern Indiana beginning in late 1979 and continuing through the present as a result of special financial encouragement of three oil shale projects in May and August 1984 by the Indiana Energy Development Board and the Indiana Corp. for Science and Technology. A session at the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium in Lexington, KY, Nov. 18-20, 1985, gave the current status of oil shale developments in the eastern United States. Speakers at this session reported on the three Indiana projects. First, Gary D. Aho, Cliffs Engineering Inc., spoke on a feasibility study by Cliffs Engineering and Allis Chalmers for a site-specific pilot plant using the Allis Chalmers process. The plant site is in Clark County, IN, on property of the Midwest Energy Resources Co. The project is funded by $240,908 each from the Indiana Energy Development Board/Corp, for Science and Technology (EDB/CST) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and $120,454 from the corporate sponsors (total $602,270). Completion is scheduled for mid-1986. Next, Edwin M. Piper, Stone and Webster Engineering Corp., discussed the American Syn-Crude/Indiana Oil Shale Project. This effort followed the completion of two smaller projects funded by the Indiana EDB/ CST: "Testing of Indiana Oil Shale in a Petrosix Pilot Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $50,000) and "Assessment of the Petrosix Process for an Indiana Shale Oil Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $100,000). The status at the time of the report at the Oil Shale Symposium was that a request for an extension of time for securing nonfederal support had been submitted to the US Synfuels Corp. The proposal included building an 11-m (36-ft) diam retort in south-eastern Indiana to process the New Albany Shale and to produce 366 m3 (2300 bbl) of shale oil per day by the PETROSIX process. The Indiana EDB/CST had contracted with Stone and Webster at $401,100 from EDB/CST and $245,835 from Stone and Webster for activities to advance the project in the negotiations with Synfuels Corp. At the time of the report, this project was the only eastern oil shale proposal that was still on the agenda of the Synfuels Corp. As a result of Congressional action in late December 1985, federal support from the Synfuels Corp. is no longer possible. Finally, Victor H. Carr, Eastern Shale Research Corp., described his firm's project, which is jointly supported by DOE ($227,749) and the Indiana EDB/ CST ($73,850) and is entitled "Feasibility Study to Determine Suitability of an In-Situ Process to Recover Hydrocarbons from Eastern Shale." An area in Scott County, IN, had been chosen, but not a specific 9 x 15-m (30 x 50-ft) site. One burn of a small in situ retort is contemplated as part of the project. Besides these three projects, several reports on shale research were presented. Joseph Damukaitis, American Syn-Crude Corp., reported that a pilot plant using the hydrogenation-extraction (H-E) process (described at the 1984 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium) was 94% built and would go through shakedown with oil shale but would then shift mechanical devices to process coal mine waste. Current status of research on the HYTORT process was then presented by Raymond C. Rex, Jr. Oil shale beneficiation research at the University of Alabama/Minerals Research Institute was reported by R. Bruce Tippin. Scott D. Carter discussed continued research on fluidized-bed retorting of shale at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory. Carl E. Roosmagi of DOE, Morgantown, reported on the oil shale research at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) laboratory. Henry J. Gomberg, Ann Arbor Nuclear Inc., discussed "Radiation Combined with Donor Solvents for Extraction and Up-Grading of Kerogen." Aurora M. Rubel and coauthor Eileen Davis presented results of research at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory under the title "The Effect of Shale Particle Size on the Products from the Bench Scale Fixed Bed Steam Pyrolysis of Kentucky Sunbury Shale." Lastly, Maria Rockwell, Technical University of Nova Scotia, presented "Processing and Up-Grading of Low Grade Nova Scotia Oil Shale for Potential Use." A review of shale oil prospects by Gerald Parkinson in Chemical Engineering for Feb. 3, 1986, covers both western and eastern projects and includes a report that the US DOE is funding a few relatively small projects; most of the fiscal 1986 budget of $12 million for shale oil is for fundamental research. Projects include a $3.2 million three-year contract with Hycrude Corp. (Chicago) for development of the HYTORT process and a $1.2 million three-year contract with the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on beneficiation of eastern oil shale by froth flotation. The report incorrectly states that current projects include a total investment of $466 million in a pair of 18-month technical and economic feasibility studies for proposed projects in southern Indiana. INTRODUCTION Early in the morning of July 16, 1979, there was a breach in the earthen retaining dam of a tailings pond at the United Nuclear Corporation's (UNC's) Church Rock uranium mill. The acidified liquid and tailings slurry spilled through the damaged portion of the retaining wall into an arroyo that is a tributary to the Rio Puerco river system. The Rio Puerco runs through Gallup, New Mexico, and eventually crosses the New Mexico-Arizona border (Fig. 1). On its way to Gallup, the Rio Puerco and its tributaries pass through land with a checkerboard pattern of ownership, with portions owned or leased by the Navajos, individuals, the Bureau of Land Management, and the State. In terms of tailings liquid volume (3.6 x 108L; 94 million gal), the UNC spill ranks as one of the largest. The mass of solids released in the slurry (10.0 x 105 kg; 1 100 tons) appears to be close to the median for accidents of this kind, however [U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), 1979]. The UNC first opened its Church Rock uranium mill in 1977 on land adjacent to acreage belonging to the Navajo tribe. The mill, which is next to the UNC Church Rock mine, is located approximately 16 km (10 miles) northeast of Gallup, New Mexico (Fig. 1). Gallup, a town of 18 000 people, is the closest population center. The region surrounding the plant site is sparsely populated by Navajos, at a density of approximately 5.8 persons/km2 (15 persons/sq mile). The UNC mill and mines employ approximately 650 persons, and the adjacent Kerr-McGee uranium mine employs about 300. The UNC mill normally processes 3.2 x 106kg/day (3 500 tons/day) of uranium ore, depositing the acidified tailings slurry in a series of three earthen holding ponds. The tailings ponds are located east of the pipeline arroyo that feeds into the Rio Puerco approximately 2.4 km (1.5 miles) from the southernmost tailings dam. The liquid portion of the tailings slurry evaporates in the ponds; hence, under normal conditions, there is no surface flow from the holding ponds to the arroyo. Both runoff from the plant site after heavy rains and possible seepage from the tailings ponds may deliver radionuclides to the arroyo-river system, however. The dam across the southernmost tailings pond was considered to be in keeping with the state of the art. However, the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Division (NMEID) had warned UNC about dangers of locating the pond over a heterogeneous geological formation. The state Engineer's Office approved of the site only after UNC agreed to strict design criteria. Others have pointed to dangers of constructing earthen dams for impoundment of uranium mill tailings (Carter, 1978). Causes of the dam break were multiple: the UNC mill filled the tailings pond to a level that exceeded permit criteria; the tailings pond was lined improperly; the dam was constructed using clay that was compacted excessively, resulting in cracking and subsequent seepage; and the unstable substrate beneath the dam permitted differential settling. The UNC Church Rock mine has continuously released dewatering effluent into the pipeline arroyo at a rate of 88.3 L/sec (1 400 gal/min) since 1968. Before 1975 this effluent was not treated; after 1975 it received precipitation treatment for removal of Ra-226. Radionuclides are also released into the river system through the dewatering of the Kerr-McGee uranium mine 1.6 km (1.0 mile) north of the UNC mill. During usual mining operations, approximately 227 L/sec (3 600 gal/min) are released into the pipeline arroyo and subsequently into the Rio Puerco. The Kerr-McGee mine began continuous release of dewatering effluent in January 1972. In 1974 Kerr-McGee began Ra-226 precipitation treatment of its dewatering releases, but NMEID data indicate that treatment has often been incomplete. The effluent from both mines has been responsible for transforming the downstream portion of the Rio Puerco from a sporadically dry riverbed into a continuously flowing stream and has contributed to the current levels of background radiation along the river system (Table 1). This paper will summarize the postspill monitoring efforts and relate the assessment of this spill to the general question of evaluating the health effects of nuclear fuel-cycle wastes. The data pertaining to the measurement of radionuclides in the Church Rock environment and the radionuclide concentrations in animals will appear in forthcoming reports. CHURCH ROCK HEALTH EFFECTS ASSESSMENT APPROACH The initial health effects evaluation involved identifying the radionuclides that were released into the river system from the tailings pond. Table 1 lists the State of New Mexico maximum permissible radionuclide concentrations for liquids released to unrestricted areas, the typical tailings liquid concentrations, and postspill river water concentrations. The tailings liquid contained comparatively high levels of Th-230, Ra-226, Pb-210, and Po-210--all of which, according to postspill river water samples, had exceeded the state maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) at one time or another. After the radionuclides in the tailings were identified, pathways through which humans could be exposed were clarified. The concept of mine safety is highlighted in the literature of sustainable mining but not extensively discussed. This study analyzes various aspects of underground and surface mine safety and emphasizes its importance in the context of sustainable mining. More specifically, this research attempts to find the relationship between mine hazards and demographic characteristics, examine and compare the perceptual difference among miners, and determine the impact of mine hazards on workplace safety and safety climate. Descriptive analysis, chi-square test, independent samples t test, and linear regression modeling were conducted to achieve study objectives. Results confirmed that mine hazards were significantly associated with age and experience. Miners perceived lower levels of management safety practices, followed by supervisor safety, coworker safety, and job safety. The analysis showed that underground miners reported lower safety scores than surface miners. There was a statistically significant difference between miners’ perception of safety climate (p < 0.05). The results showed that the higher prevalence of mine hazards predicts poor workplace safety and a low safety climate. The regression models revealed that mine hazards have a significant effect on workplace safety (p < 0.05) and safety climate (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the distinctive model of mine safety presented here contributes to the monitoring and design of comprehensive safety interventions and helps to better understand how certain factors interact on multiple levels to influence the overall safety of the industry. In this study, some suggestions are put forward to provide directions to develop a sustainable mine safety system.

"Lindgren (1933) defined a belt of alkaline-igneous rocks associated with large quantities of gold and rare earth elements (REE) that extends from Alaska and British Columbia southward into New Mexico, Texas and eastern Mexico. The North American Cordilleran alkaline-igneous belt since has been exploited for numerous types of mineral deposits. In New Mexico, Mid-Tertiary alkaline to calc-alkaline rocks are found with seven types of deposits in these districts: (1) polymetallic epithermal/mesothermal veins, (2) gold-bearing breccias/quartz veins, (3) Cu-Au, Au and Mo porphyry deposits, (4) skarns and carbonate-hosted deposits, (5) iron skarns and replacement bodies (with some gold), (6) gold placers, and (7) Th-REE (with some U, Nb) epithermal veins. Some of New Mexico’s largest gold and REE deposits are found within this belt. Their origin is not well understood, but a compilation of new data (age dates, isotopic and chemical analyses) allows for a better understanding. The diversity of igneous rocks and associated mineral deposits along this belt suggests that this region is characterized by highly fractionated and differentiated; multiple pulses of magmas and involves both upper mantle and lower crustal sources. Once magmas and metal-rich fluids reached shallow levels, local structures and wall rock compositions determined distribution of and final style of intrusions and resulting mineral deposits. INTRODUCTION Lindgren (1933) was one of the first geologists who noted that a belt of alkaline-igneous rocks extends from Alaska and British Columbia southward into New Mexico, Trans-Pecos Texas, and eastern Mexico (Fig. 1) and that these rocks contain relatively large quantities of gold, fluorine, zirconium, rare earth elements (REE), and other elements. Since then, the North American Cordilleran alkaline-igneous belt has been explored and exploited for numerous types of mineral deposits, especially gold. The North American Cordilleran alkaline belt is a north-south belt of alkaline igneous rocks and crustal thickening, roughly coinciding with the Great Plains physiographic margin with the Basin and Range (Rio Grande rift) and Rocky Mountains physiographic provinces (Mutschler et al., 1985, 1991; Bonham, 1988; Thompson, 1991a; Richards, 1995; McLemore, 1996; Jensen and Barton, 2000; Kelley and Luddington, 2002). Deposits within this belt have produced significant amounts of gold in the United States and Canada and include Cripple Creek, Colorado (702 metric tons of gold production), Black Hills, South Dakota (235 metric tons gold production) and Landsky-Zortman, Montana. In New Mexico, the North American Cordilleran alkaline belt extends from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Raton, southward to the Cornudas Mountains, in the northern Trans-Pecos alkaline belt (Fig. 2). The alkaline-igneous related mineral deposits in New Mexico have been referred to as Great Plains Margin (GPM) deposits by North and McLemore (1986, 1988) and McLemore (1996, 2001). Alternative classifications by other workers include Au-Ag-Te veins (Cox and Bagby, 1986; Bliss et al., 1992; Kelley et al., 1998), alkalic-gold or alkaline-igneous related gold deposits (Fulp and Woodward, 1991a; Thompson, 1991a, b; Bonham, 1988; Mutschler et al., 1985, 1991; Richards, 1995), porphyry gold deposits, and the North American Cordilleran belt of alkaline igneous rocks (Woolley, 1987; Mutschler et al., 1991)."

"Printed circuit boards are potentially recyclable materials. Developing suitable methodologies for proper disposal and better utilization, brings major environmental and economic benefits. A methodology for copper recovery using heat treatment before conventional leaching is carried out. A comparison between conventional methodology and the one that includes incineration treatment is presented. It concludes about results and differences in terms of the percentage of copper leached over time. INTRODUCTION The rapid proliferation of electronic devices in the past two decades, has forced researchers to find a solution for one of the most toxic and hazardous materials, the printed circuit boards (Ghosh et al, 2015). For this, countless techniques have been developed, the methodologies includes hydrometallurgy, pirometallurgy, electrometallurgy or a combination between all of them. The amount of precious and base metals in its composition are very attractive and usable to implement methodologies that allow maximum recovery and recycling. This subject has been extensively studied and researched in order to provide solutions to the great problems generated by incorrect final disposal of this waste. Over 150 articles have been widely published in the last 15 years, covering large areas such as characterization of discarded printed circuit boards, health risks associated with processing and different routes of recycling have been analyzed to provide an overview understanding this issue (Ghosh et al, 2015). (Oh et al, 2003) performed a selective leaching of valuable metals from waste printed circuit boards by size reduction, magnetic and electrostatic separation, also leaching with sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide, achieving 95 \% of copper extraction. (Chaverra Arias, 2014) proposed a similar methodology to extract copper from electrical and electronic waste, performing similar processes and applying metallic copper electrowining as well as copper oxychloride precipitation. (Silvas et al, 2015) used hydrometallurgical processes for recycling printed circuit boards applying physical processing and copper extraction by selective leaching. (Kumar et al. 2014) conducted a leaching of metals from waste printed circuit boards using sulfuric and nitric acids. Also there have been proposed various methods for recovery of different metals including applying multiple metallurgical techniques that involve both living organisms and high temperature processes such as pyrometallurgical. The printed circuit boards are a very important source of copper, according to several authors mentioned above, the amount of copper on a printed circuit board can reach about 20 \%, because copper is responsible of establishing a conductive layer that will enable the connection between electrical and electronic components. This document proposes a methodology for recycling printed circuit boards and extract copper by selective leaching. The process that is carried out consist in a preliminary characterization and mechanical separation which will condition the material for further hydrometallurgical treatment that includes leaching in nitric acid media 3M."

Newmont Gold Company&apos;s Mill No. 4 is located along the Carlin trend, about 25 miles North of Carlin, Nevada. The plant consists of a primary grinding circuit using a 7.2 m (22 ft) diameter by 2.6 m (8 ft) long semi-autogenous mill along with a 2.3 m (7 ft) diameter cone crusher. Secondary grinding is performed in a 4.8 m (14.5 ft) diameter by 9.2 m (28 ft) long overflow ball mill in closed circuit with a set of 66 cm (26 in) diameter cyclones. The ground product is fed to a typical carbon-in-leach gold leach circuit. The grinding/crushing circuit operation and control scheme are the topics of this paper.

[One of the earliest records of pillar removal can be found in the 16th Chapter of Judges in the Old Testament. Here we read where the mighty Sampson removed the pillars from beneath the prison house causing the collapse of the structure resulting in his own death along with the deaths of the 3,000 Philistine occupants. Our problems at the Mi Vida Mine differ somewhat from those of Sampson of old, in that it is our aim first to remove the pillars and get out from under the back before the "house falls in" and, secondly, to remove the pillars without the lose of a single life or without even a single casualty. Development of a realistic flotation model to predict its performance is of paramount importance to the processing plant and operators, a model that accounts for predictive and no-predictive maintenance simulating individual equipment downtime and the effect of it in the metallurgical performance on the flotation bank with final recoveries and grades has a huge advantage on optimizing the flotation circuit/bank in terms of mechanical and metallurgical side. The Model was developed in a dynamic environment that allows for a better and more realistic simulation of the flotation bank. The maintenance model accounts for the Failure rate, Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), Mean Time to Failure (MTTF) and Reliability (R(t)) those characteristics are combined to a multi-compartment process model that consists of a slurry recovery model, two options of froth recovery models, entrainment and carry capacity as a final check for the system. In addition to the maintenance and process model, a dynamic dart valve model was added to the simulation in order to have a realistic model to control the slurry level at the flotation cell. The paper goes over a study case for a current flotation operation trying to explore all the elements and the simulator to optimize the Rougher flotation bank.

Industrial shale-oil operations in North America and Europe predated the Drake discovery, but, since then, most have succumbed to competition from petroleum. However, the existence of enormous oil-shale resources in the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming [estimated at over a trillion bbl of shale oil in place] and the advancement of United States oil- shale technology by research and development programs of government and industry during the past 15 years point to a natural partnership of petroleum and oil shale to meet the accelerating energy demands of the future. The utilization of oil shale is not a question of limited petroleum supplies, but one of economics. Two factors are expected to improve the economic outlook for industrial shale oil production -- a rise in petroleum replacement cost and further advances in oil-shale technology.

In order to develop more accurate procedures for scale-up and design of semi-autogenous-grinding mills through detailed mathematical models, a better understanding of the charge motion and rock/ball segregation is needed. To achieve this a 0.61 m (2.0 ft) diameter x 0.305 m (1.0 ft) length plexiglas mill was constructed as a scale model of a commercial SAG mill. Rock motion in the rotating mill was simulated using various sizes of ceramic balls. Quantitative measurements of dynamic angle of repose, water and slurry motion, holdup and size segregation of the charge were taken. In addition, a video-presentaiton (available to the public) was prepared to elucidate charge and water motion at various mill speeds, charge volumes, rock size distribution and flow rates.

The effect of discontinuities on the fracturing and mechanical behavior of shale has been extensively investigated on a laboratory scale in previous works. It is well agreed that the lamination properties, including discontinuity and lamina properties, affect the behavior of shale. However, it is still unclear how the lamination properties are affecting the stability of the shale roof in an underground coal mine entry. This paper investigated the effect of lamination properties using the discrete element method on a mine-scale entry model as an extension to the previous work conducted on laboratory scale models.

A very high-grade calcite deposit located in northern Norway consists of CaCO3 ore with minor silicate and sulphide impurities. Cationic (Tallow-1,3-diaminopropane, Duomeen T) collector has been used in the purification of calcite by flotation with an aim of achieving calcite concentrate for its use in value-added products in a variety of industries. The feasibility of sulphide flotation from calcite by this cationic collector has been initially judged from Hallimond flotation and zeta potential on pure mineral systems and the results illustrate the removal of sulphide from calcite ore at neutral pH region. The adsorption mechanism of diamine on both the sulphide minerals was found to be the same by zeta potential studies. The variations in zeta potential are in good agreement with the adsorption of diamine molecular and ionic species as a function of pH. FTIR studies also showed the adsorption of diamine species in agreement with the zeta potential and Hallimond flotation results. Furthermore, the removal of sulphide impurities with selective flotation by diamine collector was performed in bench-scale flotation with the calcite ore and the results indeed showed that the calcite concentrate could meet the quality requirements for its use in the paper industry for coating and filler purposes.

If we solve those shortages, we are then frustrated in our attempts to open a new mine or, perish the thought, a new smelter. If we manage to make a profit, demagogues will accuse us of stealing from consumers; and, if we do not make a profit and have to shut down, the same demagogues will accuse us of creating unemployment. Meanwhile, in every aspect of our business - from research, exploration and development, to production, marketing and selling - we are hindered in every way by the bipartisan mismanagement and crippling controls of a government bureaucracy gone amok. We are fighting a war on every front. Some of you realize that ours is a war of ideas. In order to win, our industry must make its ideas heard. But to be heard, we must have something to say - which means: we must know our case logically and consistently, all the way down to essential principles. A principle is a primary truth applicable to a great number of instances. A principle is like a road map: it shows you all the possible alternatives for getting from where you are to where you want to go. Although practically everybody recognizes the usefulness of a map and the need to consult it to find the best way&apos; to get from one city to another, most people are not as careful in charting the course of their life, or the course of their industry, or the course of their nation. And so they act blindly, at random, by the whim of the moment, and get nowhere fast.

Getting the best match between truck and haul road requires examination of many factors and their effect on the bottom line. Most mines use a bottom line measure based in some way on cost per ton of material moved. This measure focuses on the two components of truck haulage cost per ton: productivity (or performance) and operating cost. Productivity can be measured or predicted for specific tasks using either field measurement or modelling. Individual tasks can be combined to provide a larger scale, longer term net figure for total mine output. True cost is more difficult to capture as they are time and task oriented and can be influenced by a summation of factors over a truck lifetime. For example, "allocated" costs, such as owning (depreciation) and some repair costs, are spread over long periods of time. Other cost, such as fuel and tires can be tied more directly to certain tasks such as fuel and tire cost. This paper focuses on the more direct, task-oriented factors that affect truck productivity and cost.

The surface of chalcopyrite was studied in situ in aqueous solution by an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM images showed that some absorbate in patches was detected on the mineral surface, after the chalcopyrite sample was soaked in 5x10-4M potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) solution at pH 11 for 10 minutes. These patches increased in size with time elapsing. At the same time, as shown by the obtained AFM force curves, the adhesion between the AFM tip and the substrate increased greatly due to the adsorption. Rinsing with ethanol removed the absorbate from the chalcopyrite surface, as well as the big adhesion observed in KEX solution.
