The loading characteristics of gold-bromide species onto activated carbon were evaluated using a batch system. The overall loading of gold onto activated carbon was rapid for the first few hours, but it continued without cessation as a result of the reduction of gold. Therefore, conventional equilibrium considerations were not applicable. Although loading continued slowly after several days, an abnormally high, loading capacity value of 10-12 meq/g carbon (650-800 kg Au/t) could be attained in 72 hours. The loading of gold-bromo species by activated carbon was by the mass transfer of (AuBr4)- species to the external surface to be reduced to metallic gold by carbon. Elution of gold from loaded carbon was feasible provided the carbon had not been loaded to high capacity values. If loading is carried to high levels, complete elution becomes impractical, and the gold may be recovered by ashing the carbon. For the high loading capacities observed, this option would appear to be cost effective. The effect of several variables on the loading capacity of the activated carbon for gold-bromo species is discussed.

Water contact angles in the air/water/francolite, fuel oil/water/francolite and fuel oil/water/quartz systems were measured to describe the wetting characteristics of these minerals. It was found that white francolite is more hydrophilic than black and tan francolite both in the absence and presence of fatty acid addition. The contact angle measurement results do not correlate very well with the flotation response and it appears that kinetic aspects of the bubble attachment process play an important role in the francolite-fatty acid flotation system.

Approximately since 1925, the phenomena of grinding and classification of minerals with screens have been studied. In the U.S. iron ore mining operations located in the so-called “Mesabi Iron range,” magnetite processing plants have made progress in the application of high-frequency screens that have allowed them to process low-grade Taconite ores and successfully achieve the economic benefit of these minerals. In the particular case of magnetite minerals disseminated in the siliceous matrix, the main objective is to reduce the generation of particles called “middlings” with high silica contents. Commonly the primary challenge of the metallurgical task is to achieve high recoveries and iron concentrates with low impurities. To achieve this, several studies and industrial applications have shown success in this regard and not only in iron ores, but also in other minerals around the world. The study described in this paper attempts to describe some key aspects that helped develop an effective solution and list the benefits associated with this modern process design by using industry-proven technologies for minerals in Chile that have similar characteristics to the minerals of the iron belt in the United States.

Deep Well turbine pumps receive constantly increasing application to the problem of mining water and other fluids from great depths. Many installations of medium settings are presently operating successfully and it is felt that mach greater depths are immediately within reach. Settings and lifts in excess of 2000 feet: are not at all out of reason with present knowledge experience, and materiels; however, conditions of individual applications will govern in each case and dictate methods and possibilities to the designer. Design and operating problems of deep set -turbine pumps ire discussed together with a description of various types of equipment falling within this category. Although the deep well turbine pump has been produced In the vertical turbine pump industry for many years, the connotation of the word "deep" still remains questionable. Among the manufacturers of this type of machinery, answers to the question implying the practical limitation of setting for a deep well pump will vary to an extreme. Most pump designers are in accord that this type of equipment has not yet been exploited to its fullest degree; however, the subject is admittedly fraught with unsolved problems and un¬tried solutions so that such a discussion must necessarily derive from personal opinion and, belief., even though based on substantial experience and background. For this reason, it will be stipulated that the present writing will deal with what may be termed euphemistically ?a highly controversial subject.? During the nineteenth century, a paper was published under proper authority proving beyond question that the human body could not withstand speeds exceeding 20 miles per hour. As a limitation, this looks ' pretty ridiculous to us today. At the beginning of the twentieth century, there was not a single machine in operation that could be described as mullti-stage deep well centrifugal pump. Since coal has been designated as the short-term answer to the threatening world energy crisis, improved surface mining techniques, along with improved extraction and handling equipment, are needed to increase the amounts that can economically be mined by open pit methods. A dwindling supply of low cost oil and gas have dictated a major rethinking of our energy sources and their use. New methods for open pit coal mining have to be found to increase coal production and to meet more stringent reclamation laws. Modern twin-engine elevating scrapers can play a vital role in meeting these needs. They are readily available, with short delivery times, from several experienced manufacturers of earthmoving equipment. Recent developments of the elevator system have extended its working range to include many of the materials commonly encountered in open pit mining. The paper deals with the advantages of using twin-engine elevating scrapers in the performance of various mining tasks. These tasks range from utility work to the major task of using the scrapers as a primary stripping toot and, of even more importance, a stripping- reclamation tool for, with scrapers, the overburden can be moved and redeposited in the same strata sequence or soil horizon as in its natural state. A recap of current applications of the elevating scraper will be presented, along with proposed uses.

In the mid-1970?s, the market value of tangible assets of S&P 500 companies far outstripped the value of intangible assets, including intellectual property (e.g., 83% tangible assets v. 17% intangible assets).1 By 2005, the picture was quite different. By that time and continuing to 2010, S&P 500 companies? market value of intangibles was about 80%, with tangible assets accounting for only 16% of market value.2 This swing highlights the importance in today?s world of understanding intellectual property rights and varying strategies and options for protecting them. This paper discusses intellectual property rights particularly patents and trade secrets, specifically: 1) types of intellectual property; 2) choosing the mode of intellectual property protection; 3) obtaining patent protection; and 4) using patents as a sword versus a shield.

Wetlands can be constructed inexpensively on mined lands to treat small flows of acid mine water. Metals are removed from the water by the wetland vegetation and indigenous bacteria. Full-scale field tests initiated at over 20 mine sites during 1984 and 1985 indicate that water quality can be upgraded to meet discharge standards with relatively minor maintenance requirements. Iron concentrations of 25-85 mg/L in the influent water fall to less than 2 mg/L during flow through a small wetland. Manganese can also be removed, though somewhat less efficiently. At the discharge, pH is easily raised to 6 by flow over limestone.

"In coal and mineral processing, several numeric parameters are used to quantify the separation performance of unit operations. For density-based separations, the partition curve is used as the starting point for many stages of diagnostic analyses. The curve is often quantified by its midpoint slope sharpness, and this single value is subsequently used for technical evaluation, benchmarking, and comparison. While this analytical approach does depict misplacement by relative density class, it inherently prioritizes middling separation and does not consider process economics or the micro-price value of individual classes. Alternatively, the organic efficiency parameter does consider process economics; however, it does not reveal information on the root cause of lost revenue or misplacement. In this paper, a new analytical approach is introduced which reconciles the technical misplacement data derived from the partition curve with the economic data derived from micro-pricing. The result is a new analytical procedure which reflects a better use of performance data. INTRODUCTION Partition curves are commonly used in the characterization, evaluation, and simulation of various physical separators. In mineral processing, partition curve analysis is routinely applied to hydrocyclones, screens, and density separators. Graphically, the partition curve depicts the recovery of particles as a function of a physical property on which the separation is based (e.g. particle density, size, magnetic susceptibility, etc.). Given the probabilistic nature of many real separators, the partition curve often exhibits a characteristic “S” shape (Fig. 1), similar to a cumulative normal distribution. Other geometric features of the curve are also depicted in Fig. 1, including the high and low closeout (or bypass) values, the midpoint slope, and the separation cut point (property value with 50% recovery). Partition curve analysis was originally proposed to evaluate coal washability (Tromp, 1937). Given the limited computational resources at the time, the analytical methods relied heavily on graphical construction and interpretation of the curve. Owing to the simplicity of the calculation and interpretation, many of these graphical approaches are still widely used for performance analysis today. The most common calculations are based on the slope of the partition curve at the midpoint. Increased slopes correspond to enhanced separation performance, since a perfect separation exhibits a stepwise transition from 0 to 1 at the desired cut point (i.e. an infinitely large slope). One common formulation of this slope, the Ecart Probable (Ep), is derived by evaluating the slope between the 25% and 75% recovery points:"

SEVERAL categories of storage are used depending on capacity. Operational storage, which is small in comparison with the market, facilitates handling surges of a few hours' or a few days' duration. Seasonal storage, usually larger, permits accumulation of product during sea- sons when demand is low, for delivery when demand is high. In producing areas, large storage may permit production at a uniform rate, without waste or distress sale. Near large markets such storage increases the efficiency of transportation, allows a more extensive or higher grade market to be served, and affords protection against interruption in delivery.

1. Introduction Laboratory and industrial grinding tests have shown that the process of size reduction can be significantly influenced by chemicals added to the powder or slurry being ground. The terms grinding aid or grinding additive refers to a substance which when mixed into the mill contents causes an increase in the rate of size reduction. The increased rate can be used to grind a higher feed rate to the desired product size or it can be used to produce a finer product size at a fixed feed rate. Whether the use of a grinding aid is justified in any given situation depends on the cost of the substance versus the improvement of output or product quality obtained with its use. Obviously, an expensive chemical must be effective in very small concentrations if it is to be economically justifiable; the cost criteria is calculated on the basis of the cost of the grinding additive per ton of material ground. Although there is direct experimental verification of the advantageous effect of grinding additives, no sound scientific explanation has yet been offered which explains or predicts the general behavior of additives. Rose and Sullivan have summarized most of the work undertaken prior to 1950 and Hartley, Prisbrey, and Wick have recently prepared an updated synopsis of the grinding additive literature. Many of the studies reported consist of subjecting materials with simple geometric shapes to some type of hardness or controlled single fracture test. On the other hand, a number of the studies were carried out on operating industrial scale mills, with little control or precise monitoring of the effect of the additives.

Built-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are designed to provide a secure space for miners who cannot escape during a mine emergency. Heat and humidity buildup within RAs may expose miners to physiological hazards such as heat stress. To minimize the risk of heat stress, Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), or 30 CFR, mandates a maximum allowable apparent temperature (AT) for an occupied RA of 35°C (95°F) [1]. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted extensive research on the thermal environment of occupied RAs intended for use in underground coal mines. NIOSH research has demonstrated that a fully occupied BIP RA can exceed the AT limit by >5.6°C (10°F) in mines with elevated mine strata and air temperatures. In this circumstance, an RA cooling system could provide a solution. This paper provides an overview of test methodology and findings as well as guidance on improving the performance of a cryogenic air system prototype by optimizing the flow rate, increasing the tank storage capacity, and improving the efficiency of the heat exchanger of the cryogenic system. This may enable BIP RAs to meet the 35°C (95°F) AT limit in mines with elevated temperatures. The information in this paper is useful for RA manufacturers and mines that may choose to implement a cryogenic air system as a heat mitigation strategy. INTRODUCTION The apparent temperature inside an occupied RA could be significantly affected by the surrounding environment’s thermal conditions, such as mine air temperature and mine strata temperature. Apparent temperature (AT) is a temperature-humidity metric for the perceived temperature caused by the combined effects of air temperature, relative humidity (RH), and air velocity. It is used to assess the perception of indoor temperatures. Depending on factors such as geographic location and season, mine air temperature, relative humidity, and mine strata, temperatures can vary significantly [2]. RAs located in cold mines may pass the 96-hour 35°C (95°F) AT limit test that poses a challenge for RAs located in hot mines. One solution in these cases is that the occupancy of the RA could be derated (i.e., the RA occupancy could be reduced) to ensure the AT limit is not reached. However, this would require mines to purchase additional RAs to accommodate all personnel in the mine. For mines with high temperatures (above 26.7°C or 80°F), the occupancy might have to be reduced so much that the necessary number of additional RAs would be impractical. In these cases, RA cooling systems could provide a solution.

Flotation of rutile with N-benzoyl-N-phenyl-hydroxylamine (N-BPHA) has been investigated. Initially, floatability tests were performed in a Hallimond tube. The results indicated that rutile was floatable in the pH range from 2 to 4 at N-BPHA concentration between 2x10-3 M and 2x10-2 M. Selectivity against hematite was recognized when operating at pH values below 2. Following the hypothesis of the formation of a surface chelate between N-BPHA and titanium ion, this compound was precipitated from a solution of Ti(SO4) to which N-BPHA was added. I.R. spectrometry oft the rutile before and after treatment with N-BPHA solution confirmed the presence on the rutile surface of the same compound. The absorption isotherm and kinetics were determined by analyzing N-BPHA in solution with an U.V. technique. A hypothesis for the mechanism of adsorption of N-BPHA on rutile is suggested.

The VERTIMILL has proven itself to be a reliable performer in heavy duty industrial applications. Applications have been extensively used in the mining industry, flue gas desulfurization applications, and industrial minerals field. The machine is a vertically stirred machine that utilizes a screw operating in a grinding media. Grinding media types have ranged from several sizes of steel balls as the most common to pebbles or ceramic media. Mesh-of-grind and final product size are the determining criterion for the selection of the media size used. Product size consists have ranged from very coarse to super-fine grinds of less than 25 microns. Savings in consumption of power, grinding media, and liners when compared to a conventional ball mills, have been realized. Savings in consumption of reagents have also been demonstrated.

An engineering endeavor involves the creation of an expansive, environmentally conscious reinforced sloped MSE wall system. The objective is to enlarge a flat mining work area. Situated in southern Arizona, this mine is dedicated to extracting essential resources such as Manganese, zinc, silver, and lead, crucial for advancing clean and renewable energy initiatives. The project necessitates the implementation of a Mechanically Stabilized Earth retention system. This system aims to both expand the mine’s working area and facilitate access to underground tunnels. The expansion pad must be robust enough to endure the substantial loads exerted by heavy mining machinery. The wall’s reinforcement components are strategically designed to counteract the challenges posed by aggressive soil conditions with low resistivity. Furthermore, they must be resilient against potential damage during installation. The system’s ease of transportation is crucial due to challenging access conditions, and its design must allow for efficient drainage. A significant consideration is the integration of a face system that fosters vegetation growth and seamlessly merges with the existing flora of the area. In addition, plans include the construction of an access road downslope from the wall. The chosen solution involves a reinforced sloped system with a 70-degree incline. The wall’s surface is adorned with an erosion control mat, intended to promote the proliferation of vegetation. For added durability, the wire basket units are equipped with galvanized wire featuring a polymer coating. High tensile strip bonded geogrids, featuring a robust polyester core, provide essential reinforcement. The completed wall is an impressive feat, spanning 1500 feet in length and soaring to a height of 45 feet. It stands as a testament to innovative engineering in harmony with environmental and functional considerations.

The Gulf Coast States ranging from South Texas to Alabama contain vast resources of lignite ranging in energy content from about 4000 to 7000 Btu/lb (as-received) with sulfur content ranging from about 0.5 to 2 percent. Currently, the strip mining rate is about 35 million tons per year in Texas and essentially zero in the other Gulf Coast states. Estimates of future mining rates are as high as 310 million tons per year by the year 2000 with 240 being in Texas. In this paper, we examine the life cycle of the surface mineable lignice based on the most recent estimates of surface mine recoverable resources with two scenarios. The first indicates that a 310 million tpy rate could be sustained for only 15 years while the second scenario suggests that the 310 million tpy could be sustained for 25 to 30 years. If lignite resources are required beyond those that are surface mineable, the deep basin lignite will be developed. Five strategies for developing deep basin lignite are discussed.

A 16 m by 4.7 m by 24.5 m (52 ft by 15.5 ft by 80.5 ft) underground ore bin was constructed at an 810 m (2660 ft) overburden depth in poor quality, faulted and altered intrusive rocks at Molycorp's block caving molybdenum mine. Geological engineering incorporated detailed structural mapping, rock quality classification, in-situ stress field determinations, numerical stress and failure analysis, and convergence monitoring. The ore bin was mined by conventional methods from the top down and utilized a bored raise for mucking. The initial ground support of rock bolts, lightweight steel sets, and reinforced concrete was later supplemented with an array of 6, 12 and 21 m tensioned, grouted rock bolts when wall closure was noted in the upper ore bin area. The supplementary support was optimized by computer analysis and monitoring.

Mineral economics interfaces the mineral sciences and engineering with finance and economics in the analysis of appropriate questions facing the minerals and energy industries. Its practitioners include those trained in the earth sciences; mining, petroleum, and geological engineering; metallurgy and mineral preparation; as well as finance, information systems, economics, and statistics-most usefully in one or more combinations. Allowing for some overlap, three general areas may be identified: evaluation, economic analysis, and resource appraisal. Evaluation begins with mine investment analysis (exemplified by Gentry and O'Neil, 1984) and process costing, for which the STRAMM Handbook (Anon., 1977) provides a well-known basis for mining and beneficiation. But it extends from property appraisal, often used for the determination of taxes and royalties, through the determination and comparison of transport costs (e.g., Richer and Soo, 1977), and to benefit/cost analyses of externalities. Economic analysis, the subject of this section, is displayed in rigor and extent both theoretically and as applied to commodity classes in Vogely (1985), but it is implicit though apparent throughout Lefond (1983). The text edited by Vogely places minerals in their aggregative context with economic growth and trade, proceeds to the theoretical analysis of minerals and their markets, analyzes the structure and performance of the major mineral sectors, and concludes with policy issues: fuel, nonfuel, and environmental. Resource appraisal employs quantitative methods for the estimation of mineral and energy resources. It moves through geologic, geophysical, and geochemical properties to the identification of estimation procedures for mineral endowment and for the economic measure of stocks and flows of specific minerals (Harris, 1984). "The current paper presents the results of a study designed to explore the types of practices that are fundamentally important to developing and maintaining comprehensive risk-based health and safety management systems (HSMS) in mining organizations. Eighteen practicing health and safety (H&S) executives, managers, and professionals from a variety of mining commodities were asked to assess the fundamental importance of 20 distinct elements and 133 different practices assembled from a review of several HSMS consensus standards. The research approach assumes that developing and maintaining a robust HSMS requires unwavering attention to activities designed to either: 1) directly contribute to a risk management system’s plan-do-check-act cycle; or 2) build an organization’s internal infrastructure without which the cycle cannot be sustained. The results of this study suggest that the following areas require consistent focus and attention: Leadership Development; Accountability; Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Development; System Coordination; Culture Enhancement; Behavior Optimization; and Risk Management Studies. Each element and its corresponding top-ranked and top-rated practices are discussed.INTRODUCTION Since the time of the Industrial Revolution, occupational health and safety (H&S) management has been a topic of practitioner thought and academic inquiry (1). In the U.S., decades of regulation and research have resulted in a surplus of prescriptive information (techniques, tools, approaches, standards, programs, practices, policies, etc.). With an abundance of such information, a simple H&S solution to address a problem in the U.S. mining industry may seem straightforward. Counter to this assertion, however, some evidence suggests that the abundance of information may create complexity and cause confusion in the minds of organizational leaders and H&S managers, ultimately discouraging the voluntary pursuit of a sound approach (2). In line with this perspective, in 2006 the U.S. National Mining Association (NMA) formed an independent commission to examine H&S management issues within the mining industry. The findings of the commission called for the mining industry to adopt a risk-based management paradigm. In the presentation of its findings, the commission stated that “…every mine should employ a sound risk-analysis process, should conduct a risk analysis, and should develop a management plan to address significant hazards identified by the analysis” (3). Grounded in the well-known plan-do-check-act cycle, the recommended risk management system allows for mines to ground strategic management choices in their mine-specific hazards and risk profiles"

Oil sands processing generates huge volumes of slurry, known as tailings, that is being stored in tailings ponds. The volume of produced tailings is a very important factor in oil sands surface mine planning, because the available area for dam construction is limited to the lease areas. On the other hand, oil sands operators cannot leave mine sites without reclaiming the tailings ponds. Since most of the reclamation material is generated in either oil sands mining or processing, it is reasonable to include reclamation material requirement as part of long-term mine planning. In this paper, an integrated optimization framework is proposed to maximize the net present value (NPV) of the produced oil sands, with respect to tailings capacity constraints and reclamation material requirements. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed to find the optimal solution for long-term mine planning problem. A sample bitumen processing flow sheet is used to formulate the volume of produced tailings, based on Clark hot water extraction method. To verify the proposed model, it is coded in Matlab and run using CPLEX. Run results for real-case oil sands dataset show that the optimal production schedule meets material requirements for reclamation, tailings volume is within tailings capacity range in all periods and the production schedule follows the predetermined horizontal direction.

The objective of this investigation was to study the electrokinetic behavior of oxidized coals to indicate the feasibility of separating oxidized coals from ash materials and pyrite by an mine flotation process. The effects of soluble inorganic electrolyte products from coal oxidation were also examined. The electrokinetic behavior of coals of different rank and degree of oxidation were studied by an electrophoreses technique. Generally, increasing the oxidation increases the negative value of the zeta-potential and decreases the isoelectric point (IEP). Flotation results indicate that the flotation recovery increases with decreasing pH values, and that with ferrous sulfate at pH 6.5 the flotation recovery is optimum while the pyrite was depressed. Comparing the flotation results with the electrokinetic results verified that in the presence of ferrous sulfate, the maximum hydrophobicity of oxidized coal with dodecylamine and frother is near its IEP which is around pH 6.5 to 7.0.
