During the past several years — much to the delight of producing firms and countries — copper prices have surged from under $1 to more than $3/lb. Anyone familiar with the industry also knows that since the early 1970s the long-run trend in real copper prices has been significantly downward. This sharp contrast between short-run and long-run trends raises the issue of the forces behind these developments. What has been driving short-run prices up and long-run prices down? Simple economics suggests that it is all a matter of supply and demand. When demand is rising faster than supply, prices will rise and vice versa.

The University Link project extends Seattle?s light rail from downtown to University of Washington (UW). It includes 5.0 kilometers (3.15 miles) of twin-bored, 6.4 meters (21 feet) excavated diameter tunnels, and two cut-and-cover stations. The Capitol Hill Station (CHS) requires an excavation 170.7 meters (560 feet) long, 22.6 meters (74 feet) wide, and 22.9 meters (75 feet) deep. The University of Washington Station (UWS) requires an excavation of about 238.4 meters (782 feet) long, 21.3 meters (70 feet) wide, and 33.5 meters (110 feet) deep. The project is within the glacially diverse soils of the Puget Sound region, below groundwater. This paper highlights major station and tunnel design elements, including the approach to support of excavation at both station boxes, and the site staging requirements.

South Coast Water District (District) operates the Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel (BIST) in South Laguna, Orange County, California between Mon-arch Beach and Aliso Beach (Figure 1). The 10,424-foot long BIST houses a 24-inch Techite gravity sewer pipeline critical to the District Sanitary Sewer Collection System that conveys 1 MGD of raw sewage to a wastewater treatment plant. The original tunnel was constructed in 1954 and the sewer line replaced in 1974. Periodic inspections by sewer pipeline maintenance crews have documented deterioration of specific intervals of the tunnel within the past few years (Sancon 2003). Rotting timber supports and rock falls in the tunnel as a result of the deterioration were endangering the sewer pipeline. A 50-foot section of the tunnel was determined to be in need of immediate repairs, which were carried out from January to August in 2007. This section was enlarged to a horseshoe shape and lined with shotcrete. The pipe was encased in concrete in the invert of the new enlarged cross section. Hatch Mott Mac-Donald (HMM) designed the emergency repairs, carried out an assessment of the rest of the tunnel alignment, and is currently developing a work plan for rehabilitating the entire tunnel.

In this study, the effects of various extraction and stripping parameters, such as equilibrium pH (7.0, 8.5 and 10), extractant concentration (5, 10 and 20 volume %), organic-to-aqueous (O/A) ratio and stripping agent type and concentration were studied on chromium (VI) recovery from chromium electroplating rinse bath wastewater using Aliquat 336. Results showed that these parameters all had significant effects on chromium (VI) recovery. A pregnant strip solution from a chromium electroplating rinse bath wastewater with 33.4 g/L chromium content, suitable for sodium dichromate production, was generated by 20 vol. % Aliquat 336 in commercial kerosene. The O/A ratio was 1/4 and the equilibrium pH value was 0.87, the as-received pH value. The wastewater was treated with a two-stage countercurrent extraction process to produce a loaded organic phase, which was later stripped at the O/A ratio of two with a 4-M NaOH solution in a two-stage countercurrent stripping process using Taguchi?s optimization technique.

The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the first MPD Student Video Contest during the spring of 2021. The event showcased the work of 18 graduate and undergraduate students from several U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when students submitted a onepage abstract for judging. Over the next several months, they developed a three-minute video that further explained their research findings. Both the abstract and video were evaluated by a panel of judges, and the top-placing participant was recognized at an MPD virtual event held on June 10.

The Detroit Upper Rouge Tunnel CSO Control Project will capture and store up to 201 MG of combined sewer overflow from 28 outfalls in Detroit, Dearborn Heights and Redford Township during wet-weather events. The history of rock tunneling in the area is associated with high groundwater inflows, artesian pressure, and hazardous and combustible gases. This paper presents the geotechnical considerations for designing the 11.28-km (7-mile) long, 9.14 m (30-ft) finished diameter tunnel and its associated adits, chambers and shafts, including the discussions of geotechnical investigations, rock mass characterization, estimated groundwater infiltration during construction, and the selections of excavation methods and lining system based on anticipated ground behavior to be encountered.

Gearless mill drives are a well established solution for grinding applications in the minerals and mining industries. The paper describes the functionality and technical features of such drive systems as well as their advantages compared to other drive solutions. Due to the variable speed operation the grinding process can be optimized for ores with varying grinding properties. This leads to significant optimization potential for the plant design as well as for its operation. Furthermore, energy and cost savings due to optimized operation, high system efficiency and high system availability are shown.

INTRODUCTION Problems encountered in barite flotation from various waste materials such as spent drilling muds are likely to be closely connected with the effect of contaminant metal ions and other chemicals on the flotation. Investigations on the recovery of barite from tailings ponds and mining wastes (Sullivan and Lamot, 1981) have shown that such barite materials can contain large quantities of carbonate and silicate minerals (including clay minerals). Also iron oxide slimes can be present. From these substances, cations such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, and A13+ can potentially dissolve and be present in the aqueous phase accompanying the various minerals. These ions and their hydrolysis products can have a substantial effect on any subsequent flotation scheme. The present study investigates the effect of the noted ions on both the stability and electrokinetic behavior of barite suspensions. Some adsorption (abstraction) experiments were also performed. Experimental materials and methods The barite used was a high-purity, naturally occur¬ring mineral sample (Kings Creek, SC). The material was ground in a porcelain mill and a fine fraction (mean particle size 11.49 µm) separated out by air elutriation. The mean size was determined by an aqueous sedimentation method using a CAHN electro-balance. In the method, an 0.6-g sample of the barite was dispersed in 450 cm3 of pH 7 water containing 0.01 g of sodium tripolyphosphate. The mean particle size was denoted X0. The stability of the barite suspensions was determined by a comparison of the mean size of the investigated barite suspension aggregations with the mean size of barite powder determined in the presence of sodium tripolyphosphate. The mean sizes (X) of the barite aggregations were determined using the same amount of water and barite sample as in the measurements of dispersed barite particle size but without the presence of polyphosphate. The ratio X/Xo is thus a measure of the stability of a suspension (the greater the ratio, the less stable the suspension). The adsorption (abstraction) experiments were carried out in polyethylene bottles containing 1 g of barite powder in 200 mL of solution. The solids were added to a solution containing a known concentration of metal chloride salts (AlCl3, FeCl2, MgCl2, and CaCl2) . The pH was controlled by both HCl and NaOH addition. The suspensions were agitated in a shaker for three hours. The final ion concentrations in solution were determined by atomic absorption analysis. The electrokinetic measurements were made using a Komline-Sanderson Zeta Reader in a conventional manner. All experiments were carried out in the presence of 1.0x10-3 k.mol/m3 NaClO4. San Francisco Public Utilities Commission is planning to replace 5 miles of pipeline under San Francisco Bay. The tunnel will be constructed using an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM and will be the first TBM-driven tunnel under the Bay. The alignment passes under environmentally sensitive habitats, through interbedded layers of sands and clays, and through a buried bedrock ridge. This paper discusses the geotechnical characterization and anticipated tunneling conditions and presents the analysis of various construction methods that resulted in the selection of an EPB TBM. Considerations related to tunneling with an EPB TBM are described in detail, including ground conditioners, TBM cutterhead wear, muck control, and squeezing ground.

The Macassa Division of Lac Minerals Ltd. is a high grade gold mine that has been operating in Kirkland Lake, Ontario for the past 51 years. It produces approximately 120,000 tonnes of ore per year, averaging approximately 18.7 grams per tonne (0.45 ounces per ton) of gold. Over the years, the ore body has been developed to a point where mining takes place below the 1,220 m (4,000 feet) elevation and 1,830 m elevation (6,000 feet) west of the original shaft. The mine is currently serviced by two surface and two winze shafts. (Figure 1). The ore body extends below the 1,930 m (6,400 feet) Level which is the bottom of the existing mining operation. An ambitious underground exploration program has substantially increased these reserves. Concurrent with the discovery of greater reserves, has been rapidly escalating mining costs, particularly labour which constituted 66% of the total cost in 1981. These costs continued to escalate as the major proportion of mining was carried out to the west, far away from the existing hoisting systems. This required a three lift hoisting system for men, materials and ore. In addition to the increased travel time and ore handling expense, increased humidity, temperature, ventilation and compressed air losses have added to the inefficiency of the operation. As a result, studies were initiated in 1980 to assess the future of the Macassa operation. The results of the studies indicated that a new deep shaft with a potential to hoist from 2,135 m (7,000 feet) or below was the most attractive option. Detailed design of the shaft and associated surface plant commenced in January, 1982 and the following milestone dates were achieved: 1980 - initial study of hoisting and haulage facilities; January, 1981 - ore reserves in excess of 1 million tonnes of ore at 18.7 g/tonne (0.45 oz/ton) confirmed; March, 1982 - preliminary study of Macassa No. 3 Shaft completed; April, 1982 - permanent hoisting plant purchased; June, 1982 - site clearing commenced; September, 1982 - shaft collared; May 1, 1983 - shaft sinking commenced; February 11, 1985 - shaft reached 1,600 m (1mile); December 1, 1985 - shaft scheduled for completion.

Percussive drill calibration experiments performed by the Bureau of Mines on two drills are described. The use of a linear velocity transducer to determine piston velocity, blow frequency, and piston stroke length is discussed. Data are presented on the relationships between maximum work rate and feed air pressure. Penetration rates in nine rock types were measured for the same two drills. Physical properties of the nine rock types are presented in tabular and graphical form to show relationships between penetration rates and physical properties. Finally, conclusions are drawn as to the potential use of these data to predict percussive drilling rates.

In pelletizing magnetic iron ore concentrates, about 6 to 18 lb of bentonite binder are added per ton of concentrate during balling to give green and dry strengths to the unfired pellets. The dry bentonite is mixed into the filtercake following the magnetic concentration circuit of the plant. The filtercake contains about 10% moisture, and the water may be of highly variable composition, depending on the particular concentration circuit, its source, and the ore being treated. A knowledge of the parameters that influence the balling operation is essential for optimal efficiency in producing balls strong enough to survive the treatment during transportation from the balling device to the furnace and during the firing operation. Furthermore, very weak unfired pellets probably contribute to high dust losses and poor furnace control. The factors that determine the strength of unfired pellets have received considerable study (1,2,3,4). Tigerschiold and Ilmoni(l) pointed out the significance of the surface area of the particles being pelletized. Merklin and Childs(2) reported on the effect of material size consist, chemical additives such as soda ash, lime, balling time, ball size, and the moisture content of green balls. Iwasaki and Zetterstrom(3) examined the detrimental effects of fatty acids on the pelletizing process. Stone(4) correlated the zeta potential of bentonites with the strength of unfired pellets. He found that, in general, a high negative charge on the bentonite is conducive to good balling. Although studies of pelletizing in the iron ore industry deal with a complex multicomponent system consisting mainly of the iron mineral, bentonite, and water, the last of these has received little attention, particularly with regard to the possible effects of mill water chemistry on the pelletizing process and the strength of unfired pellets. It is widely known that the composition of mill process water is an important variable in unit operations such as flotation, thickening, and filtering and that impure water can lead to poor metallurgical results. The results of the present study indicate that the chemistry of the mill water may be an important variable in the balling operation as well. Knowledge about this variable should contribute to lowering bentonite and oil consumption and to improving furnace performance. Such knowledge can also assist those who use balling in evaluating commercial bentonites for plant use as well as those investigating balling from a more fundamental point of view In this study we have examined 1) the effects of replacing mill process water in the magnetic concentrate filtercake with pure water, and 2) the effects of several chemical impurities that are commonly found in mill process waters upon the strength of unfired pellets. The results are interpreted in terms of the zeta potential of the bentonite and magnetite particles. The data lend support to a suggested mechanism whereby the electrostatic attraction of oppositely charged particle surfaces causes bentonite-bentonite and magnetite-bentonite bonding. This mechanism would also explain why several chemical additives e.g., sodium carbonates and phosphates, have such marked effects on increasing the strength of unfired pellets.

Based on the geological conditions of the 15,600 working face in Pingba Mine, this paper establishes the mechanical model of the stress distribution in the pre-working face under the influence of mining pressure based on a hemispherical stress distribution theory. The analytical formula for the stress distribution is determined. A numerical model for the mining pressure under the influence of key layer is also constructed, and dynamic stress interruptions under various roof-cutting relief schemes in different horizontal positions are simulated. The stress distribution of the stope under different pressure relief schemes is analyzed and compared with the theoretical results. Results show that blasting roof cutting blocks the transmission of the abutment pressure to the working surface to the coal and rock mass in front of the working face, reducing the significant working face mining pressure influence range, which decreases as blasting pressure relief position moves toward the working face. Stress accumulation in the coal in front of the working face also increases as the blasting pressure relief position moves toward the working surface. Engineering practice results show that blasting cutting can effectively block the propagation of mining pressure, and the stress impact range is shortened by approximately 1/3.

The treatment of materials for the recovery of the precious metals imposes many processing and environmental challenges. Sunshine Mining and Refining Company has developed hydrometallurgical technology for recovery of values from refractory precious metal materials. At Sunshine, the industrial focus of these processes has been for the direct recovery of silver without cyanidation. However, recent work has indicated that these technologies can provide a means for treating complex, refractory gold concentrates. This will be the focus of this paper. The practice of pretreating ores and concentrates to make them more amenable to cyanidation is becoming more common. Several pretreatment options for sulfide concentrates containing gold include roasting, bio-leaching, direct pressure oxidation and nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation. The industrial use of nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation has been limited to the Sunshine refinery where its focus has been for the treatment of silver concentrates. Much of the reluctance, outside of Sunshine, to use this type of technology may be based on the perception that high costs are associated with using nitrogen species (e.g. nitric acid, sodium nitrite) to leach. Also, the use of nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation on an industrial scale is unfamiliar to most metallurgical professionals. A summary of pressure leaching processes which utilize nitrogen species as a catalyst is presented in Tables 1 and 2.

The GRATE-KILN System plant at Svappavaara, Sweden, was constructed for LKAB by Allis-Chalmers under a turnkey contract and commissioned in 1969. The plant was designed to produce iron ore pellets from magnetite concentrate at 6100 mtpd using imported fuel oil. It represented the state of the art for plants of its type at the time. Fuel rated capacity was attained within one week of start-up. Product quality, power usage, fuel consumption and machine wear were within warranty limits during sustained production thereafter. As operator skills improved and gas handling system reserve capability was utilized, the plant frequently produced acceptable product at up to 115% of design capacity. During the period 1969 to 1976, market demands increased for high-quality pellets while energy costs rose steadily. At the same time, important advances in the design of GRATE-KILN Systems were being made in other plants constructed by Allis-Chalmers.

There is pressing need for better means of exploring ground conditions ahead of mining. Exploration drilling has the drawbacks of high cost and a seriously restricted sampling zone. Traditional geophysical exploration methods including gravity, magnetic and resistivity techniques have been used with some success underground, but all give poor target delineation relative to range, since they depend upon minor distortions of a potential force field. Much greater ratios of resolution to range can, in principle, be obtained by employing electromagnetic or seismic radiation as the exploring agent. This is because propagation time delays can be used to measure range accurately, and to separate the small effect of a distant target from the much larger effects of nearer targets and of the transmitter. Seismic waves have long been used with great success in exploration for petroleum, and recent research on their application underground is promising. Electromagnetic (radar) waves have been very successfully used for detection and location through the air and outer space, and have also explored through polar icecaps more than a mile thick.l It is not generally realized that below the soil many rocks are also somewhat radar-transparent, and that radar can be used for exploring such rocks, once a quarry, a mine, a borehole, or other means of access has been opened. Radar waves are reflected by any boundary or object where they encounter a large change in electrical properties.2 The usual cause of such a change is a difference in moisture content. The fundamental objective of mine plans are usually to maximize the mine profit by extracting ore at the lowest possible cost over the mine life while some technical constraints are satisfied. Since the costs associated with the operation of trucks and shovels as resources are significant, determining the optimum number and allocation of these resources is an essential issue. This paper presents a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model to determine the optimum number of shovels and trucks required to meet the short-term plan?s goals. Also, the model takes into account the allocation of trucks and shovels to mining faces. This model minimizes operational costs, while attempting to meet the production demand and to satisfy technological constraints. This paper also analyzes the operations of trucks and shovels in an open pit mine using ARENA simulation software.

A number of forces are at work that are now having an influence on coal handling systems. Changes are occurring and will be occurring at an increasing rate during the next few years. 1. Environmental concerns will dictate that dust pollution and spontaneous combustion and its resulting problems be rigidly controlled. 2. Slurry pipelines will be a reality despite the opposition of the railroads because they are economical and make good business sense. Artifical roadblocks can only survive for a limited time. 3. Coal is now and will remain the most economic fuel, particularly for power generation. This is true in most of the developed nations not just the United States. Increase in demand requires a close inspection of transportation systems. 4. A projected major increase in the export of U.S. coals may never occur without major port developments not the least of which will be the ability to accommodate large ships without demurrage time now affecting such shipments at U.S. Ports.

The seepage forces generated around pressurized water tunnels in rock are investigated using the analysis tools of geomechanics. The theoretical background of the two-phase material behavior is explained and the equations of motion and continuity are presented. Applications on two case studies typically occurring in practice deal with the required minimum rock cover for a pressurized tunnel and the separation between two tunnels carrying different heads. The rock mass behavior as described by the Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown material models is investigated by numerical analyses and the results are compared. The effect of key material parameters on the safety factors and the associated modes of failure is discussed.

The 20 foot diameter cast-in-place tunnel lining for Phase 3 of the Mill Creek Tunnel (MCT-3) has been completed. This paper will summarize aspects of liner design and address the construction approach in placing the liner in areas of tunnel that experienced crown overbreak. Tunnel lining production rates, installation procedures and form buoyancies experienced during concrete placement will also be presented.
