In 2008, the authors developed a methodology for assessing underground coal mines for high risk for major-hazard events. It focused on major hazard-related violations of safety standards associated with high-risk conditions. Later using a sample of 103 mines with 2008 and 2009 data, injury measures and MSHA citation data were combined into a Safe Performance Index (SPI). The SPI was used to assess the relative safety-related risk of mines, including by mine-size category. In this paper, comparisons are made of SPI-associated, normalized safety performance measures across mine-size categories, with emphasis on small-mine safety performances as compared to large and medium-sized mines.

The Cuajone Concentrator of the Southern Peru Copper Corporation is located approximately 900 kilometers southeast of Lima, Peru, near the 500 year old town of Moquegua, in an area that has been occupied since antiquity. Since the plant was started in July, 1976, the throughput has steadily increased from 36,000 to 46,000 metric tons per day. The widely distributed molybdenite content of the ore body ranges from 0.02 to 0.04% MoS2. The molybdenite content of the copper concentrate has always been sufficient to justify operation of a byproduct molybdenite plant. During the first nine months of 1980, the average grade of the ore was 1.169% copper and 0.026% molybdenite.

Purification of molybdenite concentrate from copper concentrates was performed by sulfation. The sulfation of molybdenite concentrates was carried out with pure sulfuric acid (> 96%) at 160–190 °C to study the influence of the reaction temperature and reaction time on the residual copper in the molybdenite concentrates. A purified concentrate with less than 0.1 wt% copper and low levels of other metals were obtained. For up to 7.1 wt% copper, the conditions required are a temperature of 190 °C, a reaction time of 14 h, and a moly/acid weight ratio of 1/1. Furthermore, several designs of sulfation reactors were evaluated in order to obtain the desired level of copper in the product and to analyze the influence of the operational and design parameters on the reactor dispersion number (Le). The basic design for an 80-t/day plant fed with 4 wt% copper molybdenite concentrate requires five backmixed reactors in series, each measuring 8 m3, operating at 190 °C and with a reaction time of 10 h. The reactor must be protected against severe corrosion by the hot sulfuric acid with either Teflon, glass or ceramic.

Weir Minerals ? Linatex has developed a new approach to the dewatering of fine solids, particularly mine and process plant tailings and wastes. The Weir process, patented in 2009, uses standard process equipment in a standard flow sheet, but applies this approach to materials previously thought to be too fine to be dewatered with this type of equipment. The process can be applied to a wide range of materials, making lower moisture products that can be re-used elsewhere or sent to disposal. It has already been tested successfully on a small scale in Australia on coal fines, zinc mine tailings, red mud, iron ore tails, and copper/gold tailings. The principal factors affecting the solids recovery have been established as: 1. The % solids in the slurry feed to the process ? a higher % solids provides a higher recovery. 2. The particle size of the feed solids ? coarser feeds provide higher recoveries. The key factors affecting the % solids in the dewatered product have been determined to be: 1. The particle size of the dewatered product - coarser materials produce a higher % solids in the dewatered product. 2. The height of the discharge weir on the dewatering screen - a higher discharge weir on the dewatering screen also yields a higher % solids. 3. The angle of the dewatering screen. Setting the screen horizontal increases the travel rate, reduces the bed depth and reduces the % solids in the dewatered product. Back-sloping the screen up to 5° reduces the travel rate and increases the % solids in product. Eight plants ranging in size from 3 t/h to 40 t/h have been sold to a range of customers in China, for coal and iron ore tailings treatment. Australia has one plant, a small unit rated at 30 t/h of sand fines, and has recently completed test work on iron ore tailings for a dewatering plant rated at 135 t/h. Additional tests are under way with clients around Australia, to demonstrate the capabilities of this process on specific applications and to provide confirmation that materials can be processed successfully, before moving on to larger scale tests or full size plants. The advantages of the Weir process include - lower moisture in products, uses proven equipment, lower capital and operating costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced power consumption, compact footprint, can be used in parallel or in series with existing equipment, modular design to facilitate redundancy or expansion, efficient water recovery and simpler water management, reduced cement in backfill mixes, smaller tailings disposal footprint, reduced earthworks requirements, much lower seepage losses, more stable tailings mass, progressive site rehabilitation, reduced impact on local wildlife, reduced risk of dam wall failure, and reduced environmental monitoring and compliance costs.

Understanding the effects of various ventilation and climatic parameters on the work conditions and comfort in underground mines is critical for efficient ventilation system design and cost savings and to ensure the health and safety of mine workers. To understand the effects that the thermal damping effect (TDE) and the thermal flywheel effect (TFE) have on the ventilation system design and potential cooling system, this paper compares and analyzes the wet and dry-bulb temperatures at the bottom of an intake shaft using two modeling software packages, Ventsim™ and Climsim™. The comparison shows the consequences and importance of taking into account the TDE/TFE when predicting the climatic conditions in future underground mines, especially when deciding on whether a cooling system should be employed in order to provide adequate climatic conditions in the production stopes, dead-end development headings, and throughout the mine. Ventsim™is able to account for the TFE, while Climsim™does not. Both software packages have their uses and are used within the mining industry, but it is useful to understand their limitations and where the future of underground climatic modeling will lead.

The chemistry of the element uranium enables industry to employ either an acid or alkaline carbonate leach solution for most uranium ores. Either method my be used for conventional, in-situ, or heap leaching. Uranium recovery in the leaching process depends both on the solubility of the uranium minerals and, on the access of the leach reagent to them. The uranium leaching rate is proportional to the liberated mineral surface area and the chemical reactions involved in the dissolution step. The dissolution of U(VI) and the oxidation of u(IV) to U(VI) are the basic chemical reactions in the leaching process. The active surface area is a function of the effective porosity and the particle size of the ore (1). Ore pieces, with a high porosity and high permeability, may provide a large active surface area even in coarser fractions. This type of ore might be suitable for heap or in-situ leaching techniques. Nonporous and impervious ores are usually more amenable to conventional milling where the active mineral surface is exposed by grinding the ore down to the liberation size of the mineral.

"Rock dust is applied in underground coal mines to prevent the propagation of coal dust explosions. The application is conducted either dry or wet. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages however the formation of caked rock dust particles is cited as a significant concern for wet applications. A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of modifying the rock dust particle surfaces to repel water and each other by the addition of oleic acid (OA) and sodium oleate (NaOL). At a NaOL dosage of 2 lbs/ton, a contact angle of 112o was measured indicating strong surface hydrophobicity and ability to repel water. FTIR studies indicated a chemisorption mechanism which is necessary for long term stability of the surface modification. The dispersion rate of the modified rock dust samples was elevated by the application of both OA and NaOL thereby indicating a significant reduction or elimination of the detrimental effect of caking. Tests in an explosion chamber showed a 79% reduction in the dust explosion potential relative to untreated rock test applied by the wet technique. INTRODUCTION Mine explosions have been a long-time threat to underground coal miners attracting significant attention to the accumulations of combustible dusts and gasses. In the presence of sufficient oxygen and heat, the accumulations of combustible dust and gass can lead to large-scale underground coal mine explosions [Harris et al., 2010]. To alleviate the problem, rock dust such as limestone can serve both as a thermal inhibitor and a heat sink to inert the coal dust explosibility thereby prohibiting the occurrence of dust explosions [Richmond et al., 1975; Amyotte et al., 1995; Dastidar et al., 1997; Man et al., 2009]. The dispersibility of the rock dust is an important characteristic that determines the degree of explosion prevention [Greenwald et al., 1938; Mozumdar et al., 1974; Amyotte et al., 1995]. Unfortunately, the environmental conditions of an underground mine has the potential to cause caking of the rock dust which reduces the dispersive characteristics needed. The dispersive property of rock dust can be enhanced by modification of the particle surface properties by the application of chemical additives [Greenwald et al., 1938; Mozumdar et al., 1974; Spence, 2004; Vogt, 2011; Doidge et al. 2014]. The major mechanism for rock dust caking is the adsorption of water which forms liquid bridges at the particle-particle contact points where saturated solutions of soluble powder ingredients are present. Changes in temperature or relative humidity result in solvent (water) evaporation and the formation of dry bridges [Rumpf, 1958; Specht, 2006]. One method to prevent caking is creating hydrophobic rock dust to repel water from the solid surface thereby preventing the formation of liquid and solid bridges."

The exploration for a commercially acceptable deposit of limestone is consid¬ered by many to be a relatively easy task; however, trying to locate a zone of high calcium limestone of economic thickness within a formation, which outcrops only in a narrow band varying in width from a quarter mile to ten miles, adds considerably to the normal problems experienced during an exploration program. The existence of varying glacial and karst features in the outcrop area intensified the problems encountered and complicated the interpretation of the economic value of the deposit. This paper highlights a recently completed five year exploration program during which approximately 3,900 acres of ground in seven civil townships were evaluated as potential sources of high-calcium limestone. Details are given with respect to the final site chosen and the methods used in determining the suitability of the site. This site exhibited many karat features and several methods were utilized to determine the effect of these features on the gross characteristics of the deposit. Aerial photography for both mapping and interpretation were utilized. Black and white panchromatic photography, black and white infrared and color infrared photography were flown. Resistivity, diamond core drilling and close-interval angering were used to supplement the information obtained from the aerial photography.

One of the major concerns of ground control in a coal mine is safety against failure of one of three components (i.e. roof, pillar, or floor) of the mine entry. In order to better design and evaluate stability of the mine entry with a certain confidence, a reliability approach is introduced rather than using the conventional safety factor (SF) method only. Advantages of using the reliability approach is that it not only takes variability of both rock/coal properties and stress distribution into consideration, but also assesses the stability of each component and mine entry as a whole system. Therefore, it is anticipated that, by using this approach, the current ground control technology in coal mine will convey a better sense of confidence. The results of a case example show a significant influence on the current design concept and stability evaluation of mine entry.

The authors' company has recently undertaken a development programme aimed at exploring the relationships between the variables of greatest importance in the design of mixer-settlers for metallurgical solvent extraction applications. Such applications vary from relatively small scale plants treating copper mine waters, nickel containing effluents, etc., where the total flowrates may be of the order of a few hundreds of gallons per minute, to very large scale plants treating several thousands of gallons per minute of leach liquors containing copper, uranium or other metals. This paper outlines the physical and mechanical factors which must be taken into account when designing mixer-settler systems for large scam. solvent extraction plants. The performance of the equipment will also be dependent upon the chemistry of the system, including the kinetics and thermodynamics of the ion exchange reaction itself, the effect of impurities flocculants, surfactants, temperature, etc., but these will not be dealt with here. Much of the laboratory work has been carried out using copper containing solutions and either LIX 64* or LIX 64N* as the solvent dissolved in various grades of kerosene. For simplicity, all the graphs and tables of results which are presented and discussed here will refer to the LIX-copper system, although the conclusions will in many cases be generally applicable to other systems also. The LIX-copper process is now sufficiently well known to obviate the need for a full description, however, an outline flowsheet of the process is shown in Figure 1. The ultimate objective of a laboratory programme for a particular extraction application is to provide data upon which a mixer-settler system can be designed to handle a given throughput of leach liquor and extract from this liquor the maximum quantity of metal for the minimum cost. The main train station of Leipzig in Germany is currently being upgraded from a head station to a partially thru station. In order to achieve this, significant ground improvements are necessary. Soil freezing for example is used to create the excavation box retaining walls. The freezing works will be carried out from two tunnels with an inner diameter of 2.4 m (~ 8ft). The tunnels were constructed by the pipe jacking method. The cutter head of the machine was equipped with discs and scrapers. Driving and excavation was carried out using a bentonite supported face. Due to the small arrival shafts, the machine had to be lifted out in components. The essential limitation of settlements during the drives was achieved even better than expected.

"INTRODUCTION This research produced a shotcrete formulation that extends beyond stabilization and can be used to restore the structural integrity of damaged infrastructure. The primary challenge was to develop a shotcrete or gunite with structural strength within a few minutes to prevent parasitic loading and allow ingress into damaged structures within a few minutes of the mix formulation being applied. This also applies to mining conditions where rapid support of progressive failures can minimize failure. An additional benefit was the discovery that the product had extremely high adhesion properties in addition to high flexural strengths. The approach to product design was the development of “single bag” dry mixes that are entirely self-contained, can be rapidly transported anywhere in the field or underground, and be deployed using simple equipment. Dry mix eliminates issues relevant to high shear water mixing, as water is added in the form of a mist at the point of delivery; thus low W/C can be achieved. However, as there is no onsite powder mixing, the product must have a high degree of inherent homogeneity. A commercial version of this material is currently offered as Minova’s Tekcrete Fast® product which has been successfully deployed in the mining industry and is currently being used in civil, construction and tunneling operations. The material can rapidly stabilize unstable ground in metal/nonmetal and coal mines. This paper described the technology development, product testing results and applications in mining and civil applications. BACKGROUND The original development of this product was to complete rapid stabilization of shock damaged structures, which falls outside the purview of normal construction and mining practices, due to the critical time issue and the nature of the damaged structure. The stabilization of damaged structures requires materials and equipment that can be rapidly deployed to place materials that have very rapid strength development. These materials need to be placeable at a distance to provide some degree of safety to the responders. In addition, the materials must be able to adhere to structural surfaces that have not been specially prepared and conditioned, and may also be highly fractured, dusty, wet, and quite possibly hot or extremely cold. The technology for the rapid delivery of large volumes of cementitious materials to vertical or even overhead surfaces currently exists. Pneumatic delivery (shotcreting) has been used in construction for over 100 years (American Shotcrete Association, 2014). Shotcreting has played a major role in structures like the Washington D.C. Metro subway system and been used in underground mining applications routinely to serve as part of the primary and secondary support system when used in conjunction with traditional roof bolts. Numerous rapid setting cements are commercially available. They are used for rapid repair of surfaces such as bridge decks, pavements, and commercial floors, as well as structural repairs of vertical and overhead surfaces. Few of these products are specifically marketed for use in shotcrete applications. The majority of rapid setting cements are based on, or at least contain, Portland cement as a principle component. Other components are added that help provide early strength, such as high alumina cement (HAC), organic polymers, chemical accelerators (which can also be added during concrete batching), and calcium sulfate hemihydrate (e.g. gypsum plaster) (Lea, 1971). Cementitious mortars prepared with some of these cements can achieve compressive strengths of 6.8 – 13.8 MPa (1,000-2,000 psi) within 1 hour. However, Portland cement mortar and concrete typically require many weeks of proper curing to reach significant levels of their ultimate strengths, even when used with set accelerators. The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) Extension to Woolwich Arsenal provides a much-needed public transport link to this area of London. The project includes construction of 5.3mID running tunnels under the River Thames, in ground conditions that proved challenging for the Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). The project also includes cut and cover tunnel approaches, an underground station, and an emergency shaft on the bank of the river. Major challenges have included tunneling under sensitive infrastructure, and working adjacent to existing operational railways at Woolwich Arsenal. This paper will describe the design and construction of the project and how these challenges were overcome.

A critical element of the Transbay Transit Center Program, the Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX) will extend commuter rail service into downtown San Francisco and accommodate future statewide high-speed rail service. The DTX project includes 1.8 miles of underground construction, comprising significant sections of mined and cut-and-cover tunnel. At the request of stakeholders, an updated cost estimate was prepared early in the project?s preliminary engineering phase. Unsurprisingly, this yielded a cost substantially higher than the available budget. This paper provides a summary of the management processes and planning decisions taken to bring the project back to budget, resulting in a configuration which derives maximum value from available funding and retains maximum flexibility for future system expansion.

In considering slurry transportation for Consolidation Coal Company's Loveridge Mine in Northern West Virginia, many things were taken into account. The advantages of slurry transportation in comparison to shuttle car, belt and rail transport have been given in previous publications." These include increased safety and the potential for increased productivity. In addition to these considerations, the slurry transport system installed in an existing mine provides an alternate or additional transportation mode to the one already existing. In the Loveridge Mine, this is rail haulage. Since the rail system is a single track system and the distances involved are several kilometers, it is not always possible to provide for haulage of loaded cars, return of empties, supplies and maintenance in an efficient manner. Slurry transport of the coal from the production faces to the preparation plant allows the rail system to fulfill the remaining transportation needs in an efficient manner. Consol initiated development work in slurry transportation in the early fifties leading to the construction and operation of the 174-km (108-mile) Cadiz-to-Cleveland pipeline which carried 1,200,000 metric t/y (1,300,000 t/y) from 1957 to 1963. Development work on coarse coal slurry transportation for underground mines started in 1970 with feasibility tests on coarse coal at Conoco's Ponca City, Oklahoma, slurry test facility. A series of tests were conducted in several locations as development work proceeded on the various subsystems, mechanical equipment and controls required to produce a working system to follow a continuous miner in a room-and-pillar type mine, then to combine the coal production from several mine faces for mainline transportation to the preparation plant. The face system, including the crusher-pump vehicle, hose hauler vehicle, slurry booster pump units, return water unit and 900 to 1,200 m (3,000 to 4,000 feet) of pipeline was brought together for the first time and tested as a system at Consol's Robinson Run Mine in northern West Virginia in 1975. A pipeline wear test at the Loveridge Mine where 300,000 tonnes (330,000 tons) of minus 127-mm (5-inch) run-of-mine coal were pumped from the raw coal bin into the preparation plant and a large scale test in Ponca City on a multiple feed sump where several slurry flows could be combined to provide surge capacity and a constant reclaim rate for mainline transportation completed the preliminary testing for a complete system. A decision was made to commit the system to a mine, and the south half of the Loveridge Mine was chosen. This site required the transporting of coal from one longwall and two continuous miner development faces. To prevent startup and unexpected problems in the slurry system from shutting down production of coal from the longwall face, the rail car loading point from the main section belt was chosen as the feed point for the slurry system and the design would allow for rapidly switching from one transport mode to the other. Scheduling of required development entry work and the developmental nature of the system led to a decision to install only one continuous miner face slurry transport system rather than two for this first system. The type of continuous miner in use at the mine for the foreseeable future was the Joy 2BT6 twin boring machine. This machine cuts a stable, arch-shaped entry and was therefore allowed to mine about 26 m (85 feet) of entry before roof bolting was re¬quired. Since peak production from this type of machine was not high, a smaller transport system could be used with it.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has had an ongoing interest in developing new reagent schemes for floating Stillwater, MT, chromite ore. Previous reagent schemes have been unsuccessful in achieving complete separation, primarily because little is known about the surface chemistry of the minerals in this ore. In order to design a rational reagent scheme, a study of the binding of various functional groups (R = -H, -OH, -CO2H, -NH2) on the two components (chromite and forsterite) of the Stillwater chromite was undertaken. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Spectroscopy was used to determine the adsorption isotherm, from a cyclohexane solution, of spin-probes which contained the functional group of interest. This was complemented by studies of the saturation surface coverage of the spin probe on the two minerals. In each case, more sites existed on chromite than forsterite; however, the forsterite sites were more strongly binding for each functional group. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for flotation.

According to the classification of water conservation mining in shallow coal seams in China, when the ratio of the impermeable layer thickness to the mining height is less than 18, the mining belongs to the category of special water conservation, and the strip backfilling mining method is employed. This study is based on the geological conditions in northern Shaanxi. By analyzing the stability of the impermeable layer, the stability criterion of the impermeable layer was developed. The study also investigated the compositions and properties of the backfilling materials. The results show that reasonable subsidence of the impermeable layer is allowed during mining under the basic precondition (upward cracks and downward cracks are not connected).

"In recent years the gold mining industry has been challenged by declining metal prices as well as having to treat ores that have low grades and are refractory in nature. Many factors must be considered when metallurgical studies are designed to develop process design criteria for these type of ores. These factors are mostly related to the mineralogical and chemical compositions of the ores, the geological setting of the deposit and how the ore/waste will be mined, such as whether openpit or underground, the mine schedule, and the mine fleet type and capacity. The purpose of this paper is to provide an experience-based practical approach to how to select and characterize test samples as well as devise process development metallurgical studies for both oxide and refractory gold ores, and to provide insight into some of the matters that might go wrong during the course of the studies. This paper is intended as both a guide for someone new to the field and also as a reminder for those familiar with the field. IntroductionThe recent decline in ore grades and metal prices have challenged mining companies to reduce capital and operating costs associated with developing new mineral resources. In some cases, metallurgical studies have been sacrificed to prevent cost overruns resulting in inadequate mineralogical, chemical and metallurgical characterization. Consequences have included longer construction schedules, higher initial and working capital, higher operating costs and less than desirable plant performance (Whincup, 2010; Torres, Chaves and Meech, 1999).Mineralogy, geology, mining type and sequence, and the metallurgy of an orebody will determine the process development metallurgical study requirements and eventual process plant design. Therefore, once the geologist has an early indication of a prospective orebody, geologists, metallurgists, mining engineers, and social and environmental responsibility scientists should convene and devise a plan on how to exploit the orebody economically (Lunt, Ritchie and Fleay, 1997).Geologists may find a prospective orebody solely based on grade. However, if the orebody cannot be mined and processed economically, then it is deemed not to be a deposit. An example of this could be a refractory gold deposit, either sulfidic, carbonaceous or siliceous refractory or any combination of those, that may not be mined and processed economically due to reasons such as the physical location of the deposit, depth of the ore lode, or social and environmental concerns. Therefore, an early collaboration between all disciplines must be established.Each orebody may have its own unique mineralogical, geological and chemical characteristics (Guresin et al., 2012). These unique characteristics should be effectively sampled to reduce risks associated with process design and engineering efforts for the process development metallurgical studies. If the sample or samples are not representative of these unique characteristics, then the studies performed will be pointless.
