This paper details Keeler/ Dorr-Oliver's experience with the application of fluid bed combustion technology to the burning of coal-mining waste. The designs of two stage fluid bed combustors/dryers are demonstrated as useful in the drying of coal, slag and coke, using coal and coal refuse (gob) as fuel. Anthracite mining refuse (culm) is more than abundant in Northeastern Pennsylvania. After demonstration at Shamokin, Pennsylvania, a full commercial-sized fluid bed boiler using culm is used for district heating in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Limited research work has shown the utility of using fine coal as filter aid in sludge in¬cineration. With the rising avenues of the suitability of coal as auxiliary fuel in fluid bed sludge incineration, an expansion of these concepts combines the use of coal or coal refuse as filter aid and auxiliary fuel. The primary objective of the structural geology portion of the Kennecott Copper Corporation-U. S. Bureau of Mines Pit Slope Stability Study was to determine the attitude, geometry, and spatial distribution of geologic structures of the west wall of the Kimbley Pit for use in designing a maximum stable slope for the pit. A corollary objective was to develop and refine techniques for collecting and analyzing geologic structural data with emphasis on numerical methods that could be integrated with other aspects of pit design. Surface mapping techniques used were a modification of conventional joint set mapping and a detailed linear sampling method. For subsurface investigations both oriented core and a borehole camera were used. It was determined that the major faults in the area were favorably oriented for mining a steep stable slope. The jointing or natural fracturing, although complex, was not random in attitude and consisted of several persistent fracture sets and a number of secondary sets. The attitude of the persistent fracture sets was favorable for steeper slope angles, and these attitudes were used in the design considerations. There was no significant difference between the attitude of the fracture sets determined from the former and new slope face.

Semisoluble salt minerals are characterized by their ionic bonding and are distinguished from soluble salt minerals by their limited solubility in water. One group of semisoluble salt minerals being considered is the alkaline earth salt minerals, including fluorite (CaF2), calcite (CaCO3) and apatite (Ca5F (PO4)3), as well as celestite (SrSO4) and barite (BaSO4). Another group of semisoluble salt minerals being considered is the rare-earth salts, which include bastnaesite ((Ce, La) CO3F), monazite (CePO4) and xenotime (YPO4). Surface chemistry features of these selected semisoluble salt minerals are discussed with respect to flotation separations. First, the surface chemistry features of alkaline earth semisoluble salt minerals are reviewed, and then the surface chemistry features of rare-earth semisoluble salt minerals are examined. The discussion includes electrokinetic behavior, wetting characteristics and collector adsorption.

The drive selected for any piece of machinery must adequately satisfy the application requirements both during the starting interval and at running conditions, All loading possibilities of the drive must be known and allowances made for any adverse limiting conditions such as extreme cold, or perhaps an intermittent excessive loading situation etc. In general, the drive must be selected to provide the required operating characteristics with maximum reliability and at minimum cost. Simplicity of overall design is always an advantage and care must be exercised to insure that systems incorporating unnecessary complicated parts are not indiscriminantly provided. Important non-technical considerations such as equipment avail-ability (on an overseas project) as well as standardization details also play a role in the drive selection process. Additionally, an assessment of the potential capabilities of the personnel that will have to maintain the equipment can have some influence on the final choice. Several types of prime movers are available but this article will restrict itself to the use of induction motors operating from an available alternating current power source. Were the legislators and politicians responsible for the closing of the U.S. Department of the Interior?s Bureau of Mines (Bureau) in March 1996 fully aware of what they were doing? Throughout the United States? history, the domestic mining and minerals industry has been largely responsible for the nation?s growth and prosperity that had made it a world leader. The mining and minerals industry made it possible for the young nation to catch up with Europe during the Industrial Revolution, played an essential role leading to victories in World Wars I and II and was a core ingredient for continued economic growth. For a number of decades, America?s import dependency on non-fuel mineral materials has continued to increase. (USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries). Developing domestic resources to meet current and future demands ? particularly those resources considered to be of strategic and critical value to national security ? is necessary. Federal involvement is required since many of these resources are located on public lands. Another reason for federal involvement is that the success of the industry depends on long-range research programs and advances that may take up to 25 years to become commercially available. This situation requires federal partnership to coordinate the programs necessary to collectively involve the industry, individual mining companies and colleges and universities. So, how was it possible to close a federal agency that had contributed so much to the nation?s welfare in a mandated 90-day period, with more than 1,200 employees losing their jobs?

Barium fluorophlogopites were synthesized in the laboratory to investigate the effects of composition and crystal parameters on surface properties and floatability. The negative surface charge of mica is determined by the barium content, the crystal cell volume, the distance between the layer structure and the Ba-O bond length. The higher the barium content, the larger the cell volume and distance between the layer structure, and the longer the Ba-0 bond, the more negatively charged the surface is, and, hence, the more easily adsorbed are cationic collectors. When an anionic collector (sodium oleate) is used, barium oleate forms on the mica surface and hence chemical adsorption occurs.

So good are things that from April 23 to 29 more than 500,000 visitors involved in those two industries attended the bauma 2007 Trade Show in Munich, Germany. Bauma is an international trade fair for construction and mining equipment that took place at the New Munich Trade Fair Center. It is hosted by Munich once every three years. This year was the most successful bauma ever and further strengthened the shows position as the world leader in the field.

Seeking to implement the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management to improve the safety of their tailings facilities across the globe, mining companies are motivated to invest in new technologies to recover valuable minerals from tailings. One solution being evaluated is the use of magnetic separators to concentrate ultrafine tailings. However, this approach is energy intensive as it requires high magnetic fields to recover ultrafines, and usually results in low mass yields. Additives that modify pulp rheology and surface properties, or selective flocculate ultrafine particles, were tested to enhance the performance of magnetic separation. Promising results in laboratory scale testing different types of additives confirmed that it is possible to increase the mass yield, keeping the selectivity of this stage.

This research, sponsored at Stanford Research Institute by the Grand Junction Operations Office of the U.S, Atomic Energy Commission, was an outgrowth of the concern that presently-known ore reserves may be inadequate to meet the projected demands of nuclear power reactors. The original program at SRI was to design a comprehensive geological information system and use it to store and analyze the very great quantity of data needed to estimate uranium ore reserves. Study of the problem showed that it could be solved only by use of modern electronic data processing techniques, so such a comprehensive system was designed and tested. The system test was satisfactory, but input lead time and total expense were shown to be too great for the system to be practicable for the AEC under present circumstances. Thus, based on results of the earlier research, a specialized and simplified procedure for predicting approximate uranium ore reserves was devised. The prediction is based on general geology of specific area cells of the earth, in order to provide complete volume coverage; the strata in these ores are evaluated for uranium ore favorability on the basis of a few selected criteria in order to allow rapid data input. Since the bulk of U.S. reserves are in clastic host rocks only such strata are considered in this work. This paper describes the structure and some details of the resource system and how it was tested in rn area of the western United States.

Pilot plant grinding and concentration test results indicate that conglomerate native copper ore can be ground and concentrated using conventional techniques. Single stage autogenous grinding and rod mill-ball mill grinding required the same amount of energy far the required comminution. Metallurgical results were comparable for both types of grinding investigated.

The vast majority of valuations produced for mineral properties using the net present value method provide an estimate of Investment Value or Use Value. Such an estimate can be a long way from the price that the property would sell at if placed on the market. Indicators from the market need to be used to validate or modify the net present value calculation. The comparable sales and replacement cost approaches used in the appraisal of urban buildings generally fail us in the appraisal of mineral properties. Other methods of sales analysis are introduced. Guidelines for what a minerals appraisal report should contain are presented.

Several studies of the fluorite/oleate flotation system have shown that under certain conditions calcium dioleate is formed at or transported to the fluorite surface. Adsorption of significant amounts of calcium dioleate is generally observed above oleate concentrations of -6 -5 between 4 x 10 and 4 x 10 M, yet little explanation of the onset of calcium dioleate adsorption is provided. In this study in-situ and ex-situ FTIR/IRS experiments have been performed in connection with thermodynamic solution phase analysis to better understand oleate adsorption as well as the onset of calcium dioleate formation. Results from this study are analyzed and compared to industrial practice.

The integrity of unconventional shale gas well casings positioned in the abutment pillar of a longwall mine could be jeopardized by longwall-induced deformations. Under such scenarios, the surrounding fracture networks could provide pathways for gas flow into the mine creating safety concerns. To provide recommendations for developing guidelines that ensure a safe co-existence of longwall mining and unconventional shale gas production, this study evaluates the impact of parameters that could affect potential shale gas flow into the mine in the event of a casing breach using a discrete fracture network (DFN) model. These parameters are evaluated using a conceptualized DFN realization that is representative of the fractured zone in the overburden, and the range of parameter variations is within values validated with field measurements. The results show that a decrease in fracture aperture (potentially due to longwall-induced stress in the likely vicinity of the breach location) reduces the potential gas flow to the mine by a significantly higher proportion. A 50% decrease in the aperture of the fracture that directly transports the gas from the casing breach location reduces the gas flow to the mine by over 70%. Similarly, changes in the fracture water saturation level significantly affect the gas flow. In all cases, the potential gas flow to the mine is higher if the casing breach occurs at an increased gas well pressure. These findings provide critical information regarding the impact of each of the parameters associated with gas flow in the event of a shale gas casing breach near a longwall mine and could help towards the development of guidelines to ensure a safe coexistence of both industries.

Flash smelting products of a copper sulfide concentrate collected at successive levels in an experimental reactor have been studied by reflected light microscopy, scanning electron microscope - energy dispersive analysis and electron nicroprobe analysis. Chalcopyrite, intermediate solid solution, bornite, chalcocite, metallic copper, magnetite, iron-copper spinel, pyrrhotite, hematite, delafossite and cuprite have been identified in the product samples. The detailed reflected light microscopy study of these phases and their abundance in the samples has resulted in the identification of the series of reactions during flash smelting.

Siderophyle platinum-group metals and sane gold are a thousand times more abundant in metal and chondritic meteorites than in terrestrial or lunar rocks. Type I and II carbonaceous chondrites contain granules of the high boiling point metals W, Re, Mo, Ir and Os. Metal meteorites and the metal fractions of other chondrites contain siderophyle Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh, Os, Ir and Au. Spectra of sunlight reflected from asteroids, when compared with those of meteorites and specific minerals, provide a rough classification and guide to sources of precious platin-group metals.

The subject of surface mine development is large. This section covers the fundamental concepts involved in both the open pit mining of thick or steeply dipping deposits as well as the strip mining of thin, shallow, and relatively flat-lying seams or beds. Design involves the marrying of geometries, ore and waste characteristics, equipment, and economics so that the desired result is achieved. Generally, there are many possible combinations from which to choose. For example, extraction over a short time period requires one strategy while quite another is applied for longer times. Variations in supply and demand require some flexibility of operation. Customer requirements impose certain constraints regarding the set of possible designs. Over recent years, planning and operating considerations for surface mining imposed by environmental requirements have increased markedly. There have, at the same time, been enormous advances made in the design aids available to the mine planner. Computer simulation of the various options, whether it be for mine design or equipment selection, provides detailed information for decision making in real time. A significant challenge to the engineer/planner is how to best use the aids avail-able. Because of the widespread use of commercially available and in-house computer software by industry, this section does not deal with the details of planning (for basic coverage of mine development, see Section 7). Rather, some of the basic concepts are stressed. The principles involved in equipment sizing and selection are discussed. A highly important but sometimes over-looked aspect of planning, haul road design, is also covered. For surface mining operations of the future, in-pit crushing and conveying will become even more important. Some of the considerations for application evaluation are included. The section concludes with some future concepts for surface mining.

In underground mining operations, ventilation and water sprays are the common methods of controlling dust. In recent years there has been a proliferation of technical literature dealing with water sprays for dust control. However, guidelines for the design of an effective water spray system have not been presented to the mining industry. This paper reviews developments in water spray dust control technology and recommends guidelines for water spray systems to control dust in under- ground coal and non-coal mining operations. These guidelines suggest type, number, location and orientation of nozzles, desirable operating water pressure, and associated filtration system.

Coal mined-out areas have a significant impact on mining safety and affect the pressure distributions of neighboring coal faces. The PFC3D software is used to study the goaf mechanical characteristics, and the core loading test verifies the rationality of the numerical simulation method. The results from the numerical modeling showed that the void ratio, particle size ratio, and particle size distribution of the rock particle sample (RPS) had a significantly remarkable influence on the compression deformation characteristics of the rock block. The parallel-bond tensile strength and parallel-bond cohesion had a notable impact on the compression deformation traits of the rock block only when the axial stress level was lower than 12 MPa. By contrast, when the axial stress exceeded 5 MPa, the effective modulus significantly influenced the compression deformation features. However, the stiffness ratio, loading rate, and parallel-bond friction angle had almost no effect on the compression deformation characteristics. Furthermore, when the stress level was less than 10 MPa, the stress–strain curves from the rock core samples’ numerical simulation and loading tests were approximately linear. In addition, the Pearson correlation coefficients of the stress–strain curves suggest that the goaf zone’s core numerical simulation results had a robust correlation with the loading test results. The findings of this study can serve as a reference for the field application of PFC3D software and safety assessments in goaves.

Since 2008, the Portuguese Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf has been operating the ROV "Luso" (rated for 6000m depth) for geological sampling of the deep North Atlantic seabed, performing surveys on, e.g., seamounts and hydrothermal vent fields. Amongst other sensors, the ROV is equipped with a full HD video camera with which still images of the deep ocean floor are recorded. Fixed on the ROV’s frame are two underwater "line" lasers, each generating a sharp green line (532nm) over the seabed. The two lasers are paralleled and calibrated at a set distance. Provided that the camera’s angle of view is known, numerical values for seabed surface area may be calculated using direct measurements taken from the pictures containing the laser lines. We present the corresponding main mathematical formulas, which are derived from simple geometrical considerations, and discuss how to generalize these results for an arbitrary camera tilt or pan. We present an example of application of our method by estimating values for percent coverage of rock substrate versus sediment. Our results are also relevant for determining seabed polymetallic nodule abundances from still images obtained during ROV surveys.
