"Water is a very important component in the production process at underground coal mines. Current unfavourable economic conditions have forced the coal mining industry to identify and address every possible bottleneck preventing optimal production. An increase in water-related downtime was identified as one of the bottlenecks at Goedehoop Colliery’s Vlaklaagte Shaft. The purpose of this project was to identify the various causes that contributed to the high downtime (501 hours in 2013, which led to a potential profit loss of R12.9 million) and to suggest possible solutions.After a thorough investigation the main causes of water-related downtime were identified as low water pressure and low water flow caused by pipe leakages and bursts. The main root cause for the low water flow and pressure was identified as being the low pressure resistance (1600kPa) of the thin-walled galvanized steel pipes used in the underground inbye water reticulation system. The pipes were selected according to the previous 1000 kPa pressure requirement for the continuous miner. However, the pressure requirement changed to 1500 kPa, which resulted in the pipes being exposed to much higher pressures than designed for.The water reticulation system was reviewed and current and future underground pipe layout and water requirements were determined for the shaft. The time frame in which the water consumption would be the highest was determined to be between 1 January 2014 and 7 September2014. Machine and sprayer specifications were used to determine theater consumption at the shaft. Three different solutions were considered to solve the water-related downtime problem and to ensure the efficient supply of water to the newly open sections. Permanent underground concrete dams, semi-mobile dams, or new pipe columns with a higher pressure resistance of 3200 kPa were considered. A trade-off study (taking into consideration cost, time to completion and ease of implementation, maintenance requirements, safety, and flexibility) was completed to determine which of these solutions would be most viable.Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. The theoretical part of the paper presents an analysis of the conditions of Tl extraction from Pb using different extractants and determines the activity coefficients in liquid solutions of Pb-Tl and PbCl2-TlCl. The dependence of the solution activity coefficients upon the composition and temperature is presented in the form of Krupkowski and Krupkowski-Fitzner equations. An analysis and evaluation were made of the influence of the methods of PbCl2 introduction into a Pb-Tl solution upon the efficiency of the Tl extraction process under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions. The analysis made it possible to formulate relevant equations describing the dynamics of the process of Tl extraction from Pb under stirring conditions as well as under the extractant injection into the liquid Pb-Tl solution conditions. In the part concerning experimental work, results are given for tests on the Tl extraction process from Pb-Tl liquid solutions of initial Tl content of approximately 0.05% mass using PbCl2 or, alternatively, Cl2(g) conducted in laboratorial scale. The tests made it possible to establish the influence of time, temperature, mass and the method of introducing the extractants into the liquid upon the level of Tl extraction from a Pb-Tl solution. Geochemical and mineralogical datasets from Tropicana Gold Mine, Australia, have been used to define ore fingerprints. VNIR/SWIR spectral data were represented by four normalised wavelength regions and were clustered to form spectral classes. Sequentially, these spectral class proportions within a block and collocated XRF data were clustered to form material types (fingerprints). The material types were related to an Equotip-BWi correlation. These correlations can be used to extrapolate a hardness signature and generate a BWi proxy for different blocks. The combined fingerprints and BWi proxy can assist as a tool for enhancing the prediction of comminution behaviour. They can explain specific domain-related hardness variations. For example, one material type could be separated into a softer (~15-18 kWh/t), and harder (>20 kWh/t) material blend. This was accomplished using the commonly overlooked VNIR region at 605 nm. This outcome has significance for blending strategies.

The thermodynamic properties for the CaO-CaF2and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation using Born-Mayer-Huggins type pair potential. The parameters of interatomic potential were obtained by fitting the thermodynamics properties of CaO, CaF2and BaO with the experimental data. The phase diagrams for the CaO-CaF2 and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by the thermodynamic properties obtained by MD simulation. The eutectic composition and temperature of the CaO-CaF2system calculated by MD simulation were about 28 mole per cent CaO and 1575K, respectively. The calculated eutectic point agrees very well with experimental data, which are about 22 mole per cent CaO and 1633K, respectively. "SynopsisNew technologies used to manufacture high-quality components, such as direct laser sintering, require spherical powders of a narrow particle size distribution as this affects the packing density and sintering mechanism. The powder also has to be chemically pure as impurities such as H, O, C, N, and S causes brittleness, influence metal properties such as tensile strength, hardness, and ductility, and also increase surface tension during processing.Two new metal powder processes have been developed over the past few years. Necsa produces zirconium powders via a plasma process for use in the nuclear industry, and the CSIR produces titanium particles for use in the aerospace industry.Spheroidization and densification of these metal powders require remelting of irregular shaped particles at high temperature and solidifying the resulting droplets by rapid quenching. Spherical metal powders can be obtained by various energy-intensive methods such as atomization of molten metal at high temperatures or rotating electrode methods. Rapid heating and cooling, which prevents contamination of the powder by impurities, is, however, difficult when using these methods for highmelting- point metals. For this reason plasma methods should be considered.Thermal plasmas, characterized by their extremely high temperatures (3000–10 000 K) and rapid heating and cooling rates (approx. 106 K/s) under oxidizing, reducing, or inert conditions, are suitable for spheroidization of metal powders with relatively high melting points. Thermal plasmas for this purpose can be produced by direct current (DC) plasma arc torches or radio frequency (RF) inductively coupled discharges. In order to obtain chemically pure spheroidized powder, plasma gases such as N2, H2, O2, and CH4 cannot be considered, while Ar, Ne, and He are suitable. Neon is, however, expensive, while helium ionizes easily and it is therefore difficult to obtain a thermal helium plasma at temperatures higher than 3000 K. Therefore argon should be used as plasma gas. Residence times of particles in the plasma region range from 5–20 ms, but this is usually sufficient as 7–8 ms is required for heating and melting of titanium or zirconium metal particles in the 30 µm size range at 3500 K. In this study the melting and spheriodization of titanium powders was investigated by DC non-transferred arc and RF induction plasma methods. The powders were characterized before and after plasma treatment by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to observe if any melting or spheroidization had occurred."

The study comprised of the investigation into the sensitization characteristics of AISI 409 titanium stabilized ferritic stainless steel during low heat input welding. AISI 409 is a fully ferritic stainless steel used in catalytic converters and tubing for automotive exhaust systems due to the supposition that sensitization does not occur during low heat input welding. Two plates of 2 and 4 mm were tested for sensitization during low heat input welding. The study confirmed that chromium carbide (M23C6) precipitation occurs on the grain boundaries in the heat-affected zone with consequent depletion of Cr adjacent to the grain boundaries during welding. In the 2 mm plate sensitization occurred in the heat input range of 0.1 kJ/mm to above 0.25 kJ/mm and in the 4 mm plate sensitization occurred in the heat input range of 0.2 to 0.9 kJ/mm. Ti stabilization is ineffective at the heat inputs used in this investigation due to the rapid cooling rate through the temperature region where TiC precipitates. The presence of N was found to be detrimental since it consumes Ti on cooling, forming TiN, effectively lowering the amount of Ti available for TiC formation during rapid cooling after welding. Annealing for 5 minutes at 725°C does not improve the sensitization characteristics of the welded plate. There is a linear increase in grain size as heat input increases. The resistance to pitting corrosion decreases in the sensitized, welded plate in theheat-affected zone adjacent to the fusion line of welding. Molten NaNO3-NaNO2-KNO3mixture is used as a heat transfer medium at high temperature. One of the most important properties of this mixture is the heat capacity. In the present work, the enthalpy change with temperature was measured by the drop calorimetric method to evaluate the heat capacity. The results are summarized as follows: The enthalpy of the mixture increased linearly with the temperature. From the slope of the line, the heat capacity was evaluated. The heat capacity of pure NaNO3, NaNO2and KNO3was 0.129,0.110 and 0.142 kJ/mol/K, respectively. These values are in fairly good agreement with the published data. In the binary and ternary systems, the molar additivity of heat capacity, which is well known as Neumann-Kopp’s law, was obtained. The heat capacity of HTS1and HTS2, which are well known ternary mixtures of practical use, were in the range of published data.

Chalcopyrite and pyrite are among the major gold bearing minerals in the world. The gold content in chalcopyrite and pyrite varies from 0.02 to 200 ppm and 0.01 to 20 ppm, respectively. Apart from gold, chalcopyrite is also the primary source of copper. Thus, the recovery of gold and copper are often associated with the recovery of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Flotation is one of the most successful methods applied to beneficiate chalcopyrite and pyrite. The success of a flotation process depends on an appropriate choice of the flotation collector used to achieve the desired selectivity. A thorough understanding of the atomic structure of the predominantly exposed mineral surfaces can immensely aid in developing highly selective collectors that can exploit both the physical and chemical characteristics of these surfaces. In the present study, density functional theory calculations within the plane wave framework are used to understand the surface structure and reconstruction of the most stable chalcopyrite (001), (100), (110) and (112) and most stable pyrite (100) surfaces. The chalcopyrite (001) and (100) metal-terminated surfaces undergo significant reconstruction and result in metal-metal bond formation in the sub-surface layer while the surface layer is replaced by S-atoms. On the other hand, the (001) and (100) S-terminated surfaces show S—S disulfide bond formation upon relaxation, which are consistent with literature reports. The chalcopyrite (110), (112) surfaces and pyrite (100) surface undergo rearrangement, but no reconstructions in terms of metal-metal or disulfide bond formation are observed on these surfaces. A review is presented of the furnace cooling system design and operating developments since the initial furnace start-up in January 2001 of the Chambishi DC-arc furnace to produce ferrocobalt alloy. The furnace operating conditions present a number of challenges to the furnace designers and operators, in particular, to provide a sustainable lining that can withstand the highly corrosive siliceous slag (roughly 50% SiO2). This is exacerbated by the dual requirement of operating this slag in a relatively highly superheated state (?T ?400°C when tapped at 1550°C) to ensure that the ferroalloy can be tapped (estimated 1370°C alloy liquidus temperature) prior to atomization. The core design challenge occurs at the alloy-slag interface, where a single refractory type cannot simultaneously meet the dual requirement of both adequate alloy and slag corrosion compatibility. Progression by the fourth furnace campaign to involve a retrofit of the bath sidewall to HATCH high-intensity, water-cooled, copper Waffle coolers and tap blocks is described. This involves operation of the entire slag bath, the slag-alloy interface and a portion of the alloy within a more chemically compatible refractory/slag (and possibly at times even an alloy) freeze-lining. Due to the high furnace power density employed (up to 500 kW/m2 hearth area), coupled with the large slag superheat needed, the resulting imposed peak bath sidewall heat fluxes are substantial, especially in the alloy (typically averaging 170 kW/m2), and on occasion have exceeded 1000 kW/m2. The performance of the HATCH Copper Waffle coolers under such aggressive process pyrometallurgical conditions is described. Aspects of the design and especially operating strategies to effect sustained production at up to 38 MW power input are also discussed.

In modern steel continuous casting technologies mould fluxes are well-known to assure lubrication required by tribological system of mould-solidifying strand shell, and to provide crystalline phase solid film, contributing to control heat extraction between strand and mould wall. Actual cooling rates during normal continuous casting mould operations are far higher than critical cooling rate of the liquid slag. Indeed, DTA measurements point out that even relatively small cooling rates of 30?50 K/min are high enough to give exiguous formation of crystals. In this paper, contribution of devitrification in defining crystalline phase formation of industrial basic mould slag, used in continuous casting of crack-sensitive steel grades, has been investigated by means of non-isothermal experiments study. Devitrification has proved to play a major role in mould flux crystallization in a working environment explaining the higher amount of crystalline phase formed in plant sample in comparison with lab sample from DTA analysis with typical cooling rate of 5?20 K/min. The amount of crystalline phases formed ranks as follow: Cuspidine > Combeite > Gehlenite. Kinetic analysis of DTA non-isothermal experiments has provided kinetic parameters through Kissinger and Ozawa methods, as Avrami constant resulting to be n ?2 and activation energy of Cuspidine crystallization resulting to be EC= 315 kJ/mole. The effect of addition to the parent material of oxides as MnO, TiO2, ZrO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3near to saturation point has proved to affect, in certain cases, crystallization behaviour of mold flux. In particular, MnO, TiO2, ZrO2oxides produce a relevant dump of crystallization of Combeite and Gehlenite phases, while Al2O3and Fe2O3do not appreciably affect crystallization.
