To improve the flotation performance of chalcopyrite collector, 2-(tert-butoxy)ethyl xanthate (TBEX) and its derivative O-(2-(tert-butoxy)ethyl)-N-ethyl-thionocarbamate (TBEETC) were designed and prepared by the introduction of a 2-(tert-butoxy) ethyl group into xanthate and thionocarbamate. TBEX and TBEETC were both prepared via the one-pot method with superior efficiency, which has significant commercial implications. The micro-flotation tests demonstrated that compared with sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) and O-isopropyl-N-ethyl-thionocarbamate (Z-200), TBEX and TBEETC both possessed better collecting ability and selectivity for chalcopyrite. DFT calculations and XPS were utilised to investigate the flotation mechanism involving TBEX or TBEETC and chalcopyrite. The results demonstrate that although 2-(tert-butoxy) ethyl group does not interact with minerals directly, its introduction reduces the energy of HOMO, so that they can better accept electrons instead of donating electrons which leads to better interaction with copper atoms rather than iron atoms. Understanding the deportment of minerals in size fractions has already led to improvements in the flow sheets for platinum minerals beneficiation. There are, however, more potential changes in the flow sheets that may improve the recovery of platinum group metals or reduce the costs of beneficiation before refining. Based on known technology of pre-concentration, milling, gravity concentration, flotation, and magnetic separation a number of potential alterations or additions can be considered and motivated based on the mineral deportment in size fractions.

Assessment of blast fragment size distribution is critical in mining operations because it is the initial step towards mineral extraction. Different empirical models and techniques are available for predicting and investigating the consequences of blasting, one of which is the Kuznetsov Cunningham-Ouchterlony (KCO) model. In this paper we summarize the advances in the empirical models from inception until now, and explore the improvements that have been made so far with particular emphasis is on the most recent KCO model. Utilization of the model and the errors that arise between expected and the actual outcomes are analysed. The results indicate that the KCO model remains useful for predicting the blast fragmentation at limestone mine sites, despite the availability of other advanced prediction models. It is also a valuable instrument for pre-surveying the impact of varying certain parameters of a blast plan.

"The purpose of this study is to prepare a new activated carbon from olive stones for use in gold recovery by carbon-in-leach (CIL) and carbon-inpulp (CIP). The preparation method chosen was physical activation using steam. The effect of four process parameters: the residence time for carbonization, the activation temperature, the residence time for activation, and steam flow, were studied by the mean of response surface method (RSM) in order to optimize the yield, iodine index, and attrition characteristics. These two last responses were used as primary indicators of gold recovery capacity and mechanical strength. The results obtained show that optimal activated carbon can be prepared under the following conditions: a carbonization time of 157 minutes, activation at 921°C for 53 minutes, and a water vapour flow of 0.18 mL/min. This optimum carbon has an iodine value greater than 1100 mg/g and an attrition index in the order of 0.74%. These values reflect the quality of the precursor (olive stones) as a raw material for the development of an effective new activated carbon for the gold mining industry. IntroductionActivated carbon is an effective adsorbent widely used in industry due to its high surface area, well-developed reproducible microporous structure, and high degree of surface reactivity and adsorption capacity. World consumption of activated carbon is steadily increasing. It is primarily used in industrial wastewater and gas treatment and also for silver and gold recovery from cyanide solutions (Syna and Valix, 2003; Soleimani and Kaghazchi, 2008; Buah and Williams, 2010; Eddy et al., 2011). However, activated carbon is expensive and it needs to be regenerated after each adsorption cycle. In order to decrease the cost of manufacturing activated carbon, low-cost forest and agricultural wastes are considered promising new materials. In recent years considerable research has been reported on activated carbon from agricultural wastes, such as olive stones (Yavu et al., 2010), acorn shells (Sahin and Saka, 2013), peanut shells (Wu, Guo, and Fu, 2013), grape seeds (Jimenez-Cordero, 2014), coconut shells (Yalcin and Arol, 2002; Gratuito, 2008), palm shells (Sumathi, 2009), cherry stones (Jaramilloa, Gomez-Serrano, and A´lvareza, 2009), macadamia nut shells (Eddy, 2011), apricot stones (Soleimani and Kaghazchi, 2008), and bagass (Syna and Valix, 2003)."

The technological advances in efficient, rapid, and non-destructive hyperspectral core logging systems for systematic mineral mapping have led to the discovery and exploitation of new mineral deposits Hyperspectral imaging in the long-wave infrared range has been recently used successfully to identify various phosphatebearing minerals (monazite, xenotime, and britholite), with limited work on apatite associated with mafic-ultramafic layered intrusions. In this study we investigate the effectiveness of a hyperspectral imaging (HSI) system with long-wave infrared (LWIR) bandwidthsto identify apatite in the Upper Zone of the Bushveld Complex. The accuracy of the HSI results was validated by mineralogical and geochemical data. The two apatite-enriched zones detected by HSI suggesting widespread development of apatite throughout the uppermost 600 m of the Upper Zone. The lower apatite-enriched zone is approximately 40 m thick, while the upper apatite-enriched zone is about 23 m thick, consistent with previous thickness determinations by traditional logging and analytical methods. Spectral mixing observed in the response of apatite is ascribed either to the common association of apatite and olivine in these rocks, or to differences between the spatial resolution of the hyperspectral image and the size of apatite grains. The VNIR-SWIR wavelength region did not show prominent spectral features of apatite. Nonetheless, HSI in the LWIR range is effective in mapping apatite and should therefore be considered as an exploration tool. This research advances our knowledge of the reflectance spectroscopy of REE-bearing minerals, which makes it easier to detect, identify, and quantify REE-bearing silicate minerals by HSI.

It is often asked whether this is atributed to the high grade of the ores encountered in this country, or whether such factors as fiscal and Infrastructural incentives create an economic climate that has en bled the mining industry to successfully extract and market minerals at a profit. This paper views South Africa's mineral resources in a regional and global context In an attempt to place the country's geological wealth in perspective. "Syngas from Africary’s Theunissen underground coal gasification (UCG) project will be used for power production and synthesis of liquid fuels and commodity chemicals. However, some of the coal components, especially condensable water, oils, tars, inorganic trace elements, and a small fraction of fly ash and particulate matter, make their way to the surface via the production well and can cause adverse impacts on downstream processes. Africary’s standard design incorporates a cold gas clean-up system that relies on relatively mature techniques based on highly effective wet scrubbers and acid gas removal (AGR) systems such as Rectisol®, but with the downside of low energy efficiency and waste water generation. In this paper, novel technologies for removing contaminants and species separation from the hot (T > 300°C) raw syngas are compared. Comparisons are made between supersonic gas separation (SGS), Ranque–Hilsch vortex tube (RHVT), vortex gradient separation (VGS), and inertia vacuum filtering (IVF), and a vortex-based gas separation concept is proposed for UCG applications. IntroductionImpurities in gasification feedstock (coal, biomass, waste, etc.), especially sulphur, nitrogen, chlorine, and inorganic mineral matter, often end up in the syngas and can cause adverse impacts on downstream processes. Many other hot gas cleanup systems are still under development, given the technical difficulties caused by extreme environmental and operating conditions."

Numerous developments and improvements have been made to tap-hole designs. On the other hand, there are very specific designs in operation that have endured for many years without any modification. Nobody likes design changes because of risk - the risk of atypical wear, potential hazards, and costly repairs entailing enormous production losses. So the philosophy ‘never touch a running system’ is maintained, because among other things there is no efficient working monitoring technology for tap-holes. In the past few years a couple of new technical solutions have been investigated and developed. Not all theoretical solutions are possible in practice. However, metallurgists are inventive, and the last word regarding efficient working tap-hole monitoring technologies has not yet been spoken.

Driven by the necessity to improve blast performance regarding fragment size distribution in limestone mines, this paper introduces the prediction and measurement of blast fragmentation distribution through the modified Kuz-Ram (MKR) and Kuznetsov-Cunningham-Ouchterlony (KCO) models. Precise prediction and measurement of rock fragmentation resulting from blasting play a critical role in hard rock ore extraction. This is due to the substantial influence of post-blast ore size distribution on the efficiency of all subsequent downstream rock handling and processing operations. Additionally, employing secondary breakage of boulders, when necessary, leads to an unjustified rise in production costs. In this paper, the MKR and KCO models were utilised to identify the most appropriate model for application in Bisil and Simba quarries situated in Kajiado County, Kenya. Split-Desktop was used for blast fragment measurement by processing digital images obtained after blasting and computing the fragment size distribution of the blasted rock. As per the investigation, the recorded percentages of boulders generated at the sites ranged from 7% to 12.3% for the Simba quarry and from 11.2% to 23.9% for the Bisil quarry, respectively. Regression, correlation, and root mean square error (RMSE) were employed as the primary performance indicators. The study concluded that KCO outperformed MKR in accurately predicting blast fragment sizes in the examined quarries.

Production of oxygen on the moon can be achieved by reduction of lunar soil. One such reduction technology, hydrogen reduction, favours a high proportion of ilmenite in the feedstock. Ilmenite is present in lunar soil as a minor mineral phase, but it can be upgraded using electrostatic separation. This study presents the results of a preliminary investigation into the operating parameters and sensitivities of a free-fall electrostatic mineral separator for lunar applications. Samples of ballotini and ilmenite as well as simple binary mixtures of the two were tribocharged on copper and passed through a uniform electrostatic field. The field is varied to change the electrostatic force acting on the particles. The proportion of material reporting to the positive electrode collectors, negative electrode collectors or the central collector was measured to determine the separation performance. The data confirmed that the charge transferred from the tribocharger to each species is in agreement with the triboelectric series; ballotini was found to charge positively on copper and ilmenite negatively. Particle-particle contacts were dominant, however, resulting in a somewhat symmetrical particle distribution in the collectors. These findings indicate that the copper tribocharger design requires optimisation in order to substantially increase particle-wall contacts. Four binary mixtures with feed grades of ilmenite ranging from 5% to 20% were prepared and tested. This study found that a higher ilmenite head grade resulted in a higher concentrate grade (26.3% from a head grade of 20%) with low recovery (3.4%). In contrast, the lower feed grade resulted in a low concentrate grade but higher recovery. The mass yield of ilmenite was 1.4 times greater for the highest-grade feed than for the lowest. A subsequent study into the reprocessing of middling fraction found a nearly constant relationship between cumulative grade and recovery. "Run-of-mine coal contains particles of different sizes with different specific gravities, and when this coal is crushed, the amount of material present in a particular density class changes. This alters the washability characteristics of the coal, which affects the quantity, quality, and separation efficiency of the gravity-based coal washing process. The degree of difficulty in washing a typical coal at a particular specific gravity depends mostly on the amount of material occurring within ±0.1 specific gravity range, which is known as ‘near-gravity material’ at that particular specific gravity of separation. In this paper, two numerical indices, namely ‘near-gravity material index’ and ‘index of washability’, are used to quantify the distribution of near-gravity material in different density classes and to evaluate the degree of difficulty involved in the washing process. The results of this preliminary investigation indicate the uniform distribution of near-gravity material in all density classes for finer size fractions, whereas for coarser size fractions more near-gravity material is present in the lower density classes, making the washing process more difficult at a lower specific gravity of separation. IntroductionThe prime objective of coal beneficiation is to remove physical impurities as effectively and economically as possible. The beneficiation process includes various operations on the asmined coal to make it more suitable for enduse application without destroying the physical identity of the coal. There are several coal beneficiation processes, but gravity-based separators remain the most efficient unit operation for removing the undesirable gangue material from run-of-mine coal. These separators exploit the difference in density between coal particles and gangue particles to effect a separation. The feed is introduced into an aqueous suspension of ultrafine magnetite with a particular density. The feed particles with a relative density less than that of the suspension (clean coal) float to the top surface of the suspension, whereas particles denser than the suspension density (gangue material) sink to the bottom. When the difference in density between the particle and the aqueous suspension is large, the separation is easy, but when this difference is less the separation becomes much more difficult since the settling velocity of the particles is very low. This lower settling velocity increases the probability that particles that should report to floats report to sinks, and vice versa, hence increasing the amount of misplaced material. Therefore, the degree of difficulty in beneficiating a typical coal at a particular specific gravity depends on the amount of material occurring within ±0.1 specific gravity range. This is known as ‘neargravity’ material, also termed ‘near-dense’ material, at that particular specific gravity of separation."

This study investigates seismicity and rockburst control within the Merensky Reef and UG2 orebody of an intermediate-depth platinum mine located in South Africa's Bushveld Complex. Utilising a mine-wide seismic monitoring system, over 1,900 seismic events were recorded between April 2023 and May 2024, revealing complex seismic patterns driven by mining-induced stress changes. The largest event, with a magnitude of ML 2.0, underscores the seismic risks associated with mining at increasing depths. Key findings include the spatial and temporal variability of seismic events, with high seismic activity observed near pillars and geological structures. A significant portion of events correlated with pillar and foundation failures. Moment tensor analysis identified dominant failure modes, such as stress-driven fracture closures and dynamic pillar failures. To mitigate risks, the study emphasises advanced support system redesign and rockburst risk assessment using the rockburst damage potential (RDP) method. The research highlights the importance of monitoring, geotechnical compliance, and adaptive designs in enhancing safety and reducing seismic hazards in underground mining operations. The study applied the RDP framework, classifying damage across R1 to R5 scales, where most instances fell into low-risk categories (R1 and R3), indicating minor to moderate damage. However, data limitations and the tabular stoping method's complexity led to inconclusive results, highlighting the need for more robust data and customised risk assessment tools. Despite these challenges, the RDP approach provided valuable insights into rockburst mechanisms and the effectiveness of existing support systems.

Wet stirred media milling is a widely applied grinding process in the field of mineral processing to produce <10 μm ground materials. In this paper, the results of wet stirred media milling of different Ti, Fe and Cu-oxide and phosphate minerals are presented. During the experimental work, grinding of ilmenite, vivianite, hematite and cuprite was carried out in a continuous operation wet stirred media mill. During the experiments, the particle size distribution and specific surface area of the ground materials were determined after a certain grinding time, as well as measuring the specific grinding energy, thereby determining the grinding kinetics of the different minerals. The measurement results showed the differences and similarities in the grindability of the individual minerals. Nano particulate vivianite, hematite and ilmenite was successfully manufactured in a stirred media mill; however cuprite was characterised as the coarsest final product for the same grinding circumstances. The aims of this study were to investigate the factors that influence women’s engagement in technical positions in the South African mining sector and to determine what could be done to promote their successful participation. A convergent parallel mixed-methods research design was used to ascertain the factors that facilitate, inhibit, and influence engagement. In the quantitative phase of the study, questionnaires were circulated to women employeees; and in the qualitative phase, semistructured interviews were conducted with employer representatives, most of whom were human resource personnel. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the three-factor structure (vigour, dedication, and absorption) of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale fit the sample data reasonably well. Although there is room for improvement, respondents demonstrated acceptable levels of engagement in their work. On the other hand, the qualitative findings showed that employee engagement is impacted by unfavourable working conditions, work–life balance, and the mining industry’s male-dominated work culture. The findings showed that employee engagement should be elevated to a core human resource function. To increase the participation of women in mining, human resource professionals are encouraged to collaborate with mine supervisors, managers, and employees to develop programmes that promote employees’ absorption in and dedication to their work.

Old, abandoned or in situ processed and storaged tailings can be a potential source of remained valuable metals and minerals. By reprocessing of tailings, it is possible not only to achieve economical profit from recovery of valuable metals, but also to reduce environmental damage caused by tailings such as generation of acid mine drainage from sulfide minerals, mobilization of heavy metals, soils and groundwater contamination. In addition, storage facilities can be successfully redesigned with modern geotechnical requirements and monitoring to avoid a dam collapse of abandoned tailings. In this case study, the processing of low grade abandoned tailings was investigated. Copper (0.15%), cobalt (0.032%) and gold (0.35 ppm) were determined as main valuable and recoverable metals. Cobalt occurs as cobaltite and cobaltiferrous pyrite, while chalcopyrite represents copper. The fine fraction of tailings below 32 μm is enriched with cobalt and copper. Preliminary test-works with initial tailings sample were aimed to recover copper, cobalt and gold. The previously tested magnetic and gravity separation could not recover the metals in a pre-concentration step. Flotation tests of the tailings sample had shown a suitability for flotation without previous regrinding of the tailings. The valuable minerals are first proposed to be recovered by collective flotation, followed by a selective circuit with production of a low grade copper concentrate and a cobalt bearing pyrite concentrate. Based on various tested collectors, amounts of sulfidisation agents and activators, a suitable reagents regime was determined and used for up-scaling by locked cycled test. A partial shaft pillar extraction project was embarked on at a mine in the West Wits mining region in South Africa. Prior to the extraction, a rock engineering assessment was conducted with the main objective being to establish which areas of the shaft pillar could be extracted without unduly affecting the stability of major infrastructure within the shaft pillar. Standard numerical modelling methods were used to conduct this assessment and several areas were identified for extraction. However, during the extraction process, it was found that the infrastructure was affected more than was originally predicted by linear elastic modelling. In addition to this, several large events resulted in far more large aftershocks than would normally be predicted. In order to gain an understanding of this phenomenon, seismic data was integrated with numerical modelling as follows: > The seismic data in the form of displacements was integrated in 3D space within the model to assess the effect of static stress changes associated with seismic activity > Data from large events was integrated onto specific structures, where displacements associated with large events were integrated onto the plane of structure in question. This paper describes the methodology and results obtained from each of the above processes and include insights into the mining process that were previously unfathomable using standard linear elastic numerical modelling. The way forward for this rock engineering assessment of partial shaft pillar extraction is also discussed.

In the extraction of base metals from printed circuit boards (PCBs) using bioleaching, the accumulation of metal ion stress in solution has been shown to inhibit the microbial regeneration of ferric iron. This poses a challenge for the development of this technology for e-waste treatment. The paper explores the application of a microbial immobilisation system in a two-stage bioleaching system consisting of a chemical leaching reactor in series with a microbial ferric iron regenerating reactor to mitigate microbial inhibition and to enhance base metal extraction. A mixed microbial culture dominated by L. ferriphilum, L. ferrooxidans and At. Caldus was maintained over a period of two months in the presence of polyurethane foam which acted as the biomass support particle. Microbial metabolic activity of immobilised cells and their tolerance to inhibitory Cu ions was investigated. Results showed that immobilised microbial cells maintained higher ferrous iron oxidation activity compared to planktonic cells in the presence of increasing Cu2+ concentrations up to 6 g/L. This presents an opportunity for microbial immobilised systems to be adopted in two-stage bioleaching system. Efficient prevention of mine fires is impossible without predicting the self heating processes in the given geological and mining conditions. The respective forecasting method is presented in this paper based on the following assumptions: - factor deciding on fire hazard in the underground workings is the process of heating of coal from the primary rock temperature to the critical temperature when the heating rate growth rapidly - another important factor is the fire incubation time defined as time needed to achieve the critical temperature. This time is determined by balance of heat and mass in the heated coal - contact of crushed coal with oxygen in air cause some exothermic processes as : physical and chemical sorption of oxygen , oxidation reaction and evaporation of humidity Heated coal transfers its thermal energy to the environment by conductivity to the rocks and by convection to the flowing gases. The heating is possible if thermal energy generated from coal is greater then the share transferred to the environment. The paper presents the laboratory method of measurement of heat generation in adiabatic conditions. Also the mathematical model with examples of computation enabling to forecast the self heating process of crushed coal is presented.
