The limiting criterion in the use of stainless steel for certain forming operations such as coining is its hardness, which determines parameters such as required striking pressure, wear on dies, and integrity of pattern detail. Attention is given here to the development of ultra-soft ferritic stainless steels for coinage. In the first instance, the influence of carbon content on the striking properties of a series of commercial and experimental 17%Cr alloys was evaluated. It was found that a lower carbon content permitted the striking of relatively highly profiled and intricate patterns, provided that the hardness did not exceed 125 HV. Hardnesses as low as 115 HV were achieved in the fully annealed condition, but these alloys required high striking pressures. In a further study, three grades of experimental 14%Cr ferritic stainless steels were produced with a view to optimizing the ductility. When the residual impurities were minimized, hardness values of about 100 HV and lower were achieved. Micro-alloying additions allowed the heat-treatment response and grain size to be controlled. Excellent tensile properties, with elongations of up to 42 per cent, were achieved in the fuly annealed condition, and highly profiled patterns were produced in coining trials.

The accident at Unit No. 2 of the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor (TMI-2) on 28 March 1979 was the worst nuclear accident in US history and crippled the nuclear industry. An international Vessel Investigation Project was formed to assess the integrity of the vessel. However, it was not possible to remove specimens from the lower head until January?March 1990. Fourteen of the fifteen specimens removed by electrical discharge machining were from under the debris pile that accumulated on the lower head due to melting of approximately 19 000 kg (45%) of the core. Specimens were previously cut from the lower head of a cancelled reactor of very similar size and design destined for Midland, Michigan. These specimens were subjected to controlled heating cycles with peak temperatures from 800°C to 1100°C for periods of 1 to 100 minutes. The initial study qualitatively compared the structures in the 15 specimens from TMI-2 to the control specimens from the Midland lower head. The writer used the same specimens and employed microindentation hardness traverses, electron microprobe analysis, and selective etching followed by quantitative metallography (by image analysis) to obtain a far more detailed description of the thermal exposure experienced.

Smelting or converting of sulphide concentrates and mattes in a batch operation presents a challenge when directing the off- gas to a conventional acid plant. The Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (a division of the Vedanta Group of companies) Chanderia Lead Zinc smelter was presented with such a challenge that was met with the adoption of the Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System. The Ausmelt top submerged lance technology used at Hindustan Zinc generates a furnace gas stream that containsbetween 0.1 vol% and 12 vol% SO2 during the three stages of batch smelting. Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing Technology captures the SO2 to ensure that treated flue gas exits the facility at a concentration below 100 ppmv SO2 and it releases SO2 in a controlled fashion, to more closely match the needs of the existing acid plant. The application of a regenerable scrubbing system to capture SO2 from a batch-operated furnace and convert it to acid in a conventional acid plant was a first of its kind in the world. This paper provides an update on the design and operation of the Hindustan Zinc SO2 recovery system and suggests two improvements to the basic flow sheet that optimize the cost of SO2 scrubbing further.

Although blasting is one of the most widely used methods for rock fragmentation, it has a major disadvantage in that it causes adjacent ground vibrations. Excessive ground vibrations can cause a wide range of problems, from nearby residents complaining to ecological damage. Prediction of blast-induced ground vibration is essential for evaluating and controlling the many adverse consequences of surface blasting. Since there are several effective variables with highly nonlinear interactions, no comprehensive model of blast-induced vibrations is available. In this study, the support vector machine (SMV) algorithm was employed for prediction of the peak particle velocity (PPV) induced by blasting at a surface mine. Twelve input variables in three categories of rock mass, blast pattern, and explosives were used for prediction of the PPV at different distances from the blast face. The results of 100 experiments were used for model-building, and 20 for testing. A high coefficient of determination with low mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) was achieved, which demonstrates the suitability of the algorithm in this case. The very high accuracy of prediction and fast computation are the two major advantages of the method. Although the case study was for a large surface mining operation, the methodology is applicable to all other surface blasting projects that involve a similar procedure.

Now a new generation of computerized drill rigs has been launched and they are based on modern standard PC-computer technology. The rigs have been well embraced by the market and more than 100 units have left the assembly line. The new generation has taken a quantum leap forward with respect to drilling accuracy, logging capabilities, reduction of manpower in some types and serviceability compared to the previous generation of drill rigs. The Can bus technology, well proven in the automobile products, is the backbone in the new generation control system of Atlas Copco. The short-term development is now focused on establishing this new automation platform on other product lines of Atlas Copco products. The long-term objectives is to offer the mining industry Atlas Copco products with one common automation platform. Essential for Atlas Copcois to contribute to the work with the on-going Data Exchange standard between mining machines and mining computer systems (IREDES). Our belief is that an accepted standard will make mine automation programs affordable for a wider base of the mining industry, because of the possibilities to a cost effective integration of different equipment with a minimum of system integration problems and machine specific interfaces.

Discussion I. R. M. Cheston (Visitor): I should like to congratulate the authors on this interesting paper which graphically illustrates the overall effects of the gradual developments in diamond concentrating processes which have taken place over the past few years. These final stages of diamond concentration represent only a minor factor in the cost of diamond production but because of the shortage of highly trained people for this work, any easing of the burden on the sorting staff has an importance far beyond the immediate economic sphere. The search for the solution of problems posed by the economic and social conditions of industry is never-ending. The Diamond Research Laboratory is, even now, carrying out further work to improve still more the operation of general diamond recovery processes as described in the paper. Before looking at some of the latest developments in this field of final recovery, there are a few points arising from the paper on which I would like to comment. On page 321, reference is made to the X-ray sorters originally developed by the DRL. The paper gives a figure of 100 per cent recovery of diamonds from +7 mesh concentrates in two passes through the prototype machine. Not wishing to claim miraculous powers for our group, I would prefer to see this given as virtually 100 per cent recovery of all fluorescing diamonds. Firstly however much care is taken, there is bound to be an occasional operating loss. In the test work, 100 per cent recovery was made on many occasions but this was not always so. Secondly, although most diamonds fluoresce strongly under X-rays, some diamonds only fluoresce weakly. Type IIB diamonds, in fact hardly fluoresce at all, but the incidence of this special type of diamond is very low in most deposits. However, in operating the commercial X-ray machines, there is a certain background level of reflected radiation from other feed particles. Unless the diamond fluorescence is several times greater than this, it is not possible to achieve sufficient sensitivity in ejection. A certain small but variable proportion of diamonds from each deposit is always found to fluoresce too weakly to be recovered by the X-ray machine. Tests have shown, that for the De Beers mines, this proportion is considerably less than I per cent. These diamonds are nearly all dark brown or black in colour and therefore of low value. The degree of fluorescence does not, however, depend entirely on the colour or quality of the diamond and some of the brightest fluorescence comes from the lowest quality of boart diamonds. Investigations into the property of the diamond which causes this low fluorescence are being carried out. On page 322 it is suggested that zircon fluoresces in the same colour spectrum as the diamond. This is not quite accurate. The total light given out by zircon under X-rays is of the same order as that of diamond. However the zircon radiation has a much wider spectrum band than the diamond fluorescence. Reference is also made on page 322 to the effect of selective milling in small laboratory mills on diamonds. Perfect diamonds are very hard and very strong and are extremely difficult to break. Imperfect diamonds, which form the majority of diamonds recovered from most deposits, although hard, can be very brittle. Even under slight impact some of these diamonds may shatter to powder. Milling conditions must therefore be extremely closely controlled to minimize breakage, and even so, some breakage will always occur. As suggested in the paper, the necessary conditions are: the use of small balls, slow speed mills and very limited water addition. Tests elsewhere have suggested that the water content of the pulp in such a mill must be less than 25 per cent by weight of pulp to prevent diamond breakage reaching significant proportions. The skin flotation techniques described on page 323 operate on a very small scale. It is of interest to note that in West Africa a large-scale continuous skin flotation machine is used to recover the fine diamonds. In this operation the feed is dried and, after standing, is mixed with water and fed in a single layer onto a woven phosphor-bronze conveyor belt. This belt runs at a shallow angle into a water bath and as the particles are carried through the air-water-interface, the diamonds float off and over a weir into a collecting box. The bulk of the particles, being wettable, sink to the bottom of the tank and are continuously removed. If treated without prior drying, the diamond recovery is poor. If material is treated immediately after drying, a lot of the gangue particles also float. During standing, in the hot and humid atmosphere of West Africa, it is found that the gangue particles recover their wettability much faster than the diamond particles. Optimum selectivity is obtained after standing for approximately 24 hours. At the DRL we have been experimenting with optical filters to differentiate between the fluorescence of diamonds and zircon. The aim of this paper is to study the characteristics of limestone particles (size varies from 4 mm to 20 mm) during its transportation from open cast mines through pipes. The influence of four different size fractions of limestone samples (4–6 mm, 6–10 mm, 10–15 mm, and 15–20 mm) on pipe flow characteristics during vertical transport in a 100 mm NB hose pipe was investigated. The flow velocities in the vertically lifting pipe was varied from 0.95 m/s to 2.78 m/s and a rotary feeder of 2 to 4 tonne/hr. capacity was employed to feed the limestone samples to the lifting pipe. The pressure drop data for the different size fractions of limestone samples at different mixture velocities were analysed. The effect of input volume fraction and superficial velocity of limestone samples on hold-up ratio were discussed. It was indicated that there was no substantial increase in pressure drop of slurry samples in the studied range of concentrations (CW = 4.22% - 12.54%), particle size, and low to medium range mixture velocities with respect to water run head loss data. The hold-up for the larger size fractions (15–20 mm) of limestone samples was found to be significant as compared to smaller size fractions, which may be due to terminal settling velocities of individual fractions of the studied samples.

Most flotation plants use a static reagent scheme, i.e., a set combination of collectors, frothers, and modifiers. This scheme is usually developed and refined over time to deliver optimal (not necessarily the highest) performance when the major ore types are fed to the plant. However, when ore types or mineralogy coming to the plant change substantially (and this often happens as different areas of the pit(s) are mined and crushed at the same time), there are upsets in the process, typically leading to lower recoveries. Adapting to this variability is usually done only when performance drastically suffers, and the changes made may be too late and bring additional variability in performance. The premise for SmartFloat™ is that the reagent suite needs to be dynamic, adapting continuously to changes in the ore and operating conditions. Solvay has combined advanced analytics and data science techniques with its expertise in flotation reagent chemistry to systematically and automatically achieve the above, and in real time. Thus, SmartFloat™ is optimizing the reagent suite continuously, removing the additional variability created by belated human interactions resulting in a better and more stable process. In addition, this advanced approach allows for continuous improvement by identifying poor performing ore domains and improving the reagent suite using Solvay’s FM-100 approach to design appropriate solutions.

Artisanal and small-scale miners in Nigeria struggle to attract formal financing to upgrade their operations to a more sustainable form of small-scale mining operation. Literature shows that for an investment to attract formal sources of financing; the business must be considered creditworthy by potential lenders. This means that the credit risks associated with the investment must be bearable for the potential lender. This study looks at how artisanal and small-scale miners can attract formal funding, which will help them take the leap from artisanal state to a form of sustainable small-scale mining operation. This study evaluates the creditworthiness of artisanal and small-scale mining operators using key credit risk parameters identified in the literature and through primary investigation. A quantitative study is conducted on a sample of 100 artisanal and small-scale miner establishments in Nigeria to evaluate the effect of these identified credit risk parameters on creditworthiness. It is shown in this study that being a member of a mining cooperative society, which is a form of social collateral, best improves the chances of access to formal financing for miners within the sample group. This underpins the role of social collateral, in both the formal and informal economy, and its influence in improving the creditworthiness of a typical artisanal and small-scale miner.

Gas samples were taken from a wide range of target areas on dumps arising from coal mining activities. Some of the dumps had largely burned out, some were still burning, some were in the process of rehabilitation, and on others rehabilitation was essentially complete. It was found that rehabilitation was very effective in reducing emissions to tolerable levels. Even incomplete rehabilitation reduced the CO2 emissions to less than about 1 kg/m2/a, whereas some unrehabilitated areas showed emissions of over 100 kg/m2/a. Some areas where there was active combustion taking place were also sampled, and they showed as much as 7 000 kg/m2/a, but the areas concerned were very small and their total contribution accordingly low. Analyses were also made for SOx, NOx, NH3, and CH4, but these were generally (and unexpectedly) at very low levels. The mines sampled represented 53 per cent of all surface coal mining activity. Accordingly the estimated total emissions were scaled up, to arrive at estimates of 1950 000 ± 350 000 t/a C02, 2040 ± 580 t/a SOx, 306 ± 85t/a NOx, and 31 ± 9 t/a NH3 for all surface mines. Methane was detected only from burning coal, and due to the difficulty in sampling, no reliable estimate could be made of these methane emissions.

The application of refrigeration on deep South African gold mines is mostly achieved through the medium of chilled water which is produced in central installations either on surface or underground. The amount of refrigeration has been increasing rapidly over recent years, and the total installed capacity on all gold mines now exceeds 1000 MW(R), with annual running costs exceeding R100 million for electricity alone. Hence, there are strong incentives to design such installations for optimal cost-effectiveness. The duty required of these installations varies considerably, owing to daily and seasonal climatic changes and the varying nature of the water demand. It has long been recognized that a computer program to predict installation performance as a whole under any given conditions would be highly desirable. An interactive computer program, CHILLER, is described which enables the user to build an installation, consisting of any configuration of cooling towers, water storage reservoirs and packaged water chilling machines. Externally-dictated conditions such as the weather and chilled water demand must be specified, and all quantities under control of the installation, including internal water flow rates and compressor capacity regulators, must be set. The time-varying performance of the installation can then be simulated. Examples are given of the application of the program in the design of a new installation, and in evaluating the effect of any modifications to existing installations.

An evaluation was made of the wear and performance characteristics of liter bars, and the cost-life effectiveness of backing materials for rotary-mil liners. In a large run-of-mine mil in which the liter bars were mounted on grid liners of austenitic manganese steel (AMS), the liners had an average life that was five to six times that of equivalent unprotected liners. For a single mil, this is equivalent to annual savings in the cost of materials of up to R320 000, and to a downtime of 100 hours. Of the five materials tested in a large pebble mil grinding quartzitic ore, AMS grids and 'white iron' blocks performed best on a cost-life basis, with possibly improved performance from a real white cast iron. (The 'white iron' was shown by microstructural analysis to contain flake raphite and pearlite, being in reality a grey cast iron.) The high-chromium white iron had by far the longest predicted life, with mild steel a surprising second. Rubber was shown to last well in this type of mil. The wear rates of liners change during their lifetimes. The protective effect of liter bars was clearly illustrated by the reduction of over 40 per cent in the wear rates of the liners when the lifter bars were renewed to a height of 80 mm from a fully worn height of 35 mm.

Currency fluctuations affect the rand revenues of all exports of mineral commodities, as well as influencing their price on local markets. Of the more than 50 mineral commodities produced by South Africa, about 75 per cent derive 40 to 100 per cent of their revenues from exports. . Although supply and demand are largely beyond its control, management can maximize its revenues despite fluctuating overseas prices and exchange rates by using the right market at the right time. Management can operate in the futures markets, which involve a specific commitment to deliver a specific quantity of a standardized commodity at a set time in the future and at a price that is determined on a futures exchange in open auction; or management can use the options market, in which a producer can insure against the risk of a falling price by taking out a put-option, which gives the holder the right (but not the obligation) to sell the commodity at a stated price at an agreed time in the future. In the forward markets, management has three available tools; forward currency transactions, trading of currency options, and money market hedges. Revenues, currencies of exchange earnings, purchasing power of the rand, and world price trends are shown in over 40 diagrams and tables for the main mineral commodities produced in South Africa.

n today's marketplace with high metals prices, many operations are faced with the challenge of improving recovery and at the same time maximizing availability. New operations under feasibility studies have the same requirements, with the additional need for ever higher capacities. Economies of scale have proved a vital competitive advantage in the game of ore dressing. Flotation is the most widely used method for extracting valuable minerals from ore - despite its mature age of 100 years. Customer demand has driven the development to increasing cell sizes, and in most cases, this has brought the advantages of both lower capital expenditure and lower operational and maintenance cost. The challenge of scale up, however, is to meet the metallurgical performance requirements in the larger volumes. The paper outlines recent trends and developments in flotation technology, and presents new solutions designed to address the needs for increased capacities as well as improved performance. Whether the goal is to improve existing operations or to scale up new equipment, computer aided tools are playing a key role in shortening the development cycle and reducing costly trial-and-error tests in full scale. Using the new tools and validation thereof will be outlined, as well as the development principles behind the new solutions. Plant results and experiences with the new developments are presented and discussed in several cases around the world.

The Prieska deposit, mined between 1971 and 1991, is one of the world’s top thirty volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) base metal deposits. The Prieska Copper Mine in the Northern Cape Province was closed by Anglovaal when underground mining had extended to depths which did not allow for safe and economic extraction of the deposit at the time. The mine has a recorded historical production of over 1 Mt of zinc and 430 k tonnes of copper from 46.8 Mt of milled sulphide ore, achieving life-ofmine metal recoveries of 85% for copper and 84% for zinc into high quality concentrates (refer ORN ASX release 15 Nov 2019). Orion Minerals Ltd is currently investigating the feasibility of developing a new mine in the footprint of the historical Prieska Copper Mine, using the extensive remaining infrastructure, with the intent of extracting the unmined zinc-copper mineralisation from the Prieska deposit. This paper reports results on the flowsheet development philosophy on the hypogene ore, and challenges encountered in the process. This study initially failed to replicate historic copper and zinc recoveries employing the historic production flowsheet and reagent conditions unmodified on bench scale, as the copper and zinc were co-floating. Flowsheet modifications were therefore made to improve differential flotation and recovery, resulting in achieving comparable saleable products and recoveries from processing the hypogene ore on bench scale. Flotation variability test work on the hypogene ore focused on the use of the original flotation procedure and reagent suite using a sodium cyanide-zinc sulphate depressant system on the copper circuit, and it generated a saleable copper product of 20-26% Cu grade at 80-86% recovery. The zinc circuit generated a saleable zinc product grading at 48-55% Zn at 80-94% recoveries. Some zinc losses were due to the deportment of some zinc in sauconite. Despite the four-decade study on ultrasound’s (US) impact on mineral’s floatabilities, there is still not clarity regarding its role in mineral surface wettability. For this purpose, the present investigation endeavours ……the hydrophobicity and floatability characteristics of a chalcopyrite-pyrite-quartz (Cp- Py-Qtz) system in the presence and absence of an ultrasonic pre-treatment. The ultrasonic process was carried out by a sonopuls at a constant frequency of 20 kHz with an adjustable power level from 30 to 200 W. Initially, the impact of sonication time (15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 s as well as 10, 20 and 30 min) and power magnitude (30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 W) were evaluated while the dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity and pH were also monitored. Collector-less micro-flotation tests were carried out on the non-pre-treated and the US pre-treated samples at 60 W and 15 s. The samples’ hydrophobicities were determined by the drop shape analysis approach. The dissolved-oxygen level was varied using a mini bench pressurised water reactor to study the effect of O2(aq) concentration on the chalcopyrite and pyrite wettability characteristics. The results showed that the minerals’ hydrophilicities were relatively more sensitive to the sonication’s time than its power that resulted in reducing all three minerals’ hydrophobicities. In addition, it was found that the dissolved-oxygen content and creation of sub-micron sized bubbles led to an improvement on chalcopyrite and pyrite hydrophobicities. Finally, we proved that the Cp’s floatability increased and Qtz’s recovery reduced while being subjected to the ultrasonic irradiation (15 s at 60 W); however, Py’s recovery remained constant. This conclusion confirmed the possibility of a selective separation in ultrasound-assisted copper ore flotation. We recommend that further advanced investigations be conducted, using an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to thoroughly understand the surface modifications induced by the ultrasonication
