Gold-poor and gold-rich porphyry and epithermal gold-silver deposits of Caenozoic and Cretaceous age in the western Pacific and central and eastern Europe are confined to predominantly andesitic continental margins and island arcs. The arc volcanic rocks overlie a complex non-oceanic basement of stacked nappes, the uppermost of which is often ophiolitic. The emplacement of ophiolite triggered a reversal of tectonic polarity, subduction and arc magmatism. Andesitic volcanism and the formation of a strato-volcano were followed by the ascent of magma and porphyry copper mineralisation. Regional propylitic alteration came from convecting, predominantly meteoric fluids. Magmatic degassing caused advanced argillic alteration. This is commonly unmineralised in perched water tables, but may sometimes host high sulphidation gold or enargite gold at deeper levels within the propylitic zone. The onset of extensional stress after the andesitic volcanism allowed meteoric water to circulate to depths of 5 km or more, with consequent cooling of an ascending magma body at depth and the development of low sulphidation epithermal gold mineralisation near and immediately above the sub-volcanic basement surface. All andesitic arcs are mineralised. Regional controls on their ore potential include the level of erosion and geological features in the basement that focus the ascent of fluids. Differences between the mineralisation of the European and the western Pacific arcs may reflect the presence of older, more granitic basements in many of the European arcs.

The two best known graphical methods for presenting and comparing comminution data are obtained by linearising the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann and the Rosin-Rammler size distribution equations. It is shown that the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann equation can cause excessive congestion in the 50 per cent oversize range and that, overall, the Rosin-Rammler is a better procedure. Examples are given

This paper describes the incipient heatings that occurred below ground in the High Main and Main seams at the mine between the years 1963 and 1966. The possible causes, effects and activities associated with such heatings are discussed in an attempt to establish the precautions necessary to minimize such occurrences. The assessment of as many "norms" as possible is made to enable the earliest detection and level of activity to be determined.

Microporous ceramic tubes (15 micrometre pore diameter) and PVC membranes (10 micrometre diameter) have been used as spargers in the electrowinning of copper from concentrated and dilute chloride electrolytes. At a current density of 600 A/m2 and a nitrogen gas sparging flow rate (at NTP) of 1.53 cm3/s per unit electrode length, it was possible to electrowin planar rather than powdery deposits with copper concentrations as low as 0.157 M. To obtain a planar deposit at higher concentrations of cupric chloride the most realistic optimum current density appears to be between 1 000 and 1 500 A/m2.

Wheal Jane, situated between Truro and the Carnmenellis granite, is under development by Consolidated Gold Fields, Ltd., as a tin producer. The main or B lode comprises a complex cassiterite-sulphide ore located in shear zones along the footwall of the lowest of a series of porphyry dykes (elvans) which strike ENE and dip 35° north. Minor mineralisation follows other elvan contacts and sets of later steeply dipping fractures. The localisation and overall geometry of the deposit is explained in terms of the complex structural geology of the Lower Palaeozoic metasediments and the shape and manner of emplacement of the invading Hercynian granite of Cornwall. Variations in the thickness and grade of the orebody, and in the nature of the mineralisation, are shown to be structurally controlled by undulations of the footwall contact of the B elvan. "Synorogenic mafic intrusions are a common feature of the northern Appalachians. Two sulphide-bearing intrusions in central Maine that have been investigated revealed a number of important features that illustrate sulphide-silicate interaction that relates to magmatic sulphides. The Moxie Pluton is a large mafic intrusion emplaced during the Devonian Acadian orogeny. The Katahdin gabbro is a small mafic body that is probably genetically and temporally related to the Moxie Pluton. Both intrusions were formed bv the intrusion of variably fractionated magmas into irregular chambers and feeder zones. The southern half of the Moxie Pluton contains three small sulphide accumulations, whereas the Katahdin gabbro hosts a large, predominantly massive, sulphide body. Textural evidence clearly documents the magmatic origin of these sulphides.The three Moxie Pluton sulphide bodies are located at or very close to the intersection between the intrusion and the sulphidebearing Hildreths Formation. Sulphur assimilation, suggested by this relationship, is supported by the isotopically light (634S = —8 to —25) and the selenium-poor (S/Se - 25 000-48 000) character of the Moxie sulphides and correlation with the Hildreths Formation sulphides (S34S = —25, S/Se = 25 000-48 000). Isotopically light sulphur (534S = —20 to —21) and high S/Se ratios indicate that the majority of sulphur in the Katahdin sulphide body was also derived from an unexposed country rock source. The volume of sulphide in this example illustrates the potential efficiency of the sulphur assimilation process—so efficient in this case that marked dilution of the economic chalcophile elements resulted from the addition of so much external sulphur.The three Moxie Pluton sulphide occurrences are all impoverished in Ni and Cu (1.87-0.44% Ni; 0.72—0.32% Cu in massive sulphide), but contain normal Co contents (0.22-0.13%) relative to typical magmatic sulphides. The Katahdin sulphides show a greater Ni and Cu impoverishment (0.2% Ni; 0.1% Cu in massive sulphide) with similar Co (0.17%). The Ni content of the Moxie Pluton olivines document the fractional removal of sulphides during crystallization of the host magma, which resulted in the progressive depletion of the chalcophile metals in this magma. Modelling that involved the fractional crystallization of the magma coupled with the fractional removal of a specified proportion of sulphide has successfully duplicated the Moxie Pluton sulphide compositions. A similar magmatic model has been postulated for the Katahdin sulphides with a greater degree of sulphide fractionation. This latter model is again supported by extremely low Ni/forsterite ratios in olivines, though the compositional range is insufficient to document fractionation. These magmatic models are not unique, but they provide a relatively constrained and consistent explanation for the sulphide compositions.The Ni contents of olivines are the most important indicator of sulphide-silicate interaction in mafic magmas and have exploration potential. They provide a means of assessing the timing and extent of sulphur saturation in an intrusion and are a guide to the Ni content of a sulphide accumulation in equilibrium with olivine. In the Maine examples they provide strong evidence of the magmatic origin of the sulphide accumulations and justification for magmatic modelling."

Recent studies of the mineralisation at Avoca in southeast Ireland, Parys Mountain in Anglesey, and Coniston in the Lake District result in the proposal of a new metallogenetic model for mineral deposits in the Southern Caledonides. A regional pattern of metal zoning exists, an axial belt, including the major copper deposits, being bordered by areas with lead-zinc deposits. Conformable lenticular pyritic zones occur in the central belt, closely associated with acid volcanic sequences and, often, post-dating them. These zones are thought to have been formed in a marine environment, mineral growth taking place below the sediment-water interface, whereas magnetite-rich zones developed under different Eh and pH conditions. Stockworks containing appreciable copper and, in some cases, lead and zinc were developed at a later date, stratigraphically below the pyritic zones, by migrating hydrothermal chloride and metal-rich fluids. Complex lead-zinc-pyrite mineralisation resulted from the reaction between pyritic zones and the final fraction of the hydrothermal fluids. Crosscutting vein-type fissure infilling mineralisation occurs in every mineral field. These deposits apparently comprise a pulsatory metasomatic sequence, closely related to tectono-stratigraphic controls, ore localisation being influenced by the coincidence of suitable structures and pyritic shale horizons. The implications for mineral exploration are considered and it is concluded that the model offers an explanation for the existing pattern of metal zoning; and it may have wide applicability to mineral deposition in geosynclinal sequences.

Magnetite occurs in the reverberatory furnaces, blast furnace and converter (a) as the result of its presence in the materials charged, and (b) as the result of oxidation of the FeS in the charge in the absence of sufficient SiO2 to slag the FeO as it is produced and thus prevent its subsequent further oxidation. Magnetite is reduced by FeS according to FeS+3Fe3O4=10FeO+SO2 and similar reactions. This reaction is markedly affected by temperature and does not proceed to any important extent below about 1200°C. To ensure comparative freedom from magnetite it is therefore necessary to raise the temperature of the furnace to the highest practicable figure and to use plenty of siliceous flux. Since the maximum operating temperature is likely to be limited by the resistance of the refractories to attack by the slag, investigation of the factors affecting this attack should be helpful. It is reasonable to suppose that the formation of magnetite might be minimized by ensuring intimate admixture of matte and slag during conversion so that silica is readily available for combination with ferrous oxide as the latter is formed. The literature gives no clue to the importance of this factor and some experimental work on this aspect might be fruitful

Our ability to generate information and transport it about the planet on super highways of optical fibre is about to change the way in which we communicate, work and live. There is not a single aspect of our future that will go untouched by the communication and computing revolution that Is now upon us. The change we are about to witness will overshadow the impact of the printed word, industrial revolution and physical transport. The next major wave of information technology (TT) development will focus on the delivery of information and experience on demand, in the right form, at the right time, at the right price, to fixed or mobile terminals anywhere, over networks of optical fibre, radio, satellite and optical wireless. Bandwidth, distance and time will no longer be significant cost elements as service and access become dominant.

Following two years of laboratory research with bench scale reactors, a 9 m3 experimental process demonstration reactor was installed at Budelco's zinc refinery to treat their underlying groundwater. A 600-fold scale-up was successfully achieved. It has demonstrated that this anaerobic microbial process can remove a wide range of heavy metals and sulphate to the required levels. Extended operation of the demonstration unit has shown that the process is robust, can withstand wide variations in feed composition, rapidly recovers from operational upsets and is easy to start up and shut down. The metal sludge produced can be processed in a metal refinery to recover both metals and sulphur.

It is now widely accepted that the metal-rich waters found in the oil wells are possible present-day analogues of the mineralising solutions that formed the Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) deposits throughout mid-continental USA and elsewhere. A study characterising the trace-metal content provides additional circumstantial evidence for a genetic link between sediment-hosted mineral deposits and basin brines: Ag, Co, Ni, As and Mo, detected in the scale, are locally present in accessory minerals in MVT deposits and the levels of Ag found in the wells support the conclusion that sedimentary sources for silver should be considered in evaluating the origin of Pb-Zn-Ag deposits in sedimentary terrains

In the UK the development of the science of strata control has been strengthened by a resurgence of interest in the specialism of roofbolting and its associated techniques. The evolution of the theories and practices of strata bolting in roadway stabilisation is discussed. Practical experiences are considered, principally the use of Australian techniques, the relationship between bond strength and annulus and the effects of stress in the ground. Areas of new technology such as cable bolting, injection anchors and on-board bolters are also discussed. The recent advances in computer technology and rock testing equipment and methods have provided the opportunity to simulate ground behaviour under various conditions. Computer modelling developments and the use of techniques to predict ground behaviour are described.

"The komatnte-associated Fe-Ni-Cu sulphide mineralization at Kanihalda, Western Australia, is generally believed to be magmatic in origin, but a number of postmagmatic processes significantly modified the original distribution, structure, texture, mineralogy and chemistry of the ores. Two important types of mobilized magmatic sulphides are interpillow/interbreccia sulphides and hydrothermal vein-type sulphides. Interpillow and interbreccia sulphides occur interstitial to pillowed or volcaniclastic footwall metabasalts beneath or adjacent to the stratiform contact ore horizons. They are mineralogically and compositionally similar to massive ores (and are similarly depleted in PGE relative to the compositions of bulk samples of mined ores), but normally do not contain the distinctive chalco-phile ferrochromites characteristic of contact ores. They are interpreted as magmatic sulphides that have been mobilized from the overlying or adjacent massive sulphide layer during peak tectono-nietamorphism.Hydrothermal sulphide-quartz + albite veins also occur in the footwall metabasalt and contain unannealed deformation fabrics indicative of emplacement during retrograde metamorphism. The high Ni and Pd contents of these sulphides (7-13% Ni, up to 70 ppm Pd) indicate that the metals have been derived from the spatially associated komatiites and/or contact ores, consistent with the Pd depletion previously inferred for massive ores. Very low Ir contents and high Pd/Ir ratios of the vein-type sulphides confirm an aqueous transportation-deposition mechanism; hydrothermal transfer of PGE results in strong decoupling of Pd from Ir.There appears to be a complete continuum of sulphide mobilization at Kambalda ranging from whole-scale phy sical dislocation (fault offset ores) and selective mobilization (stringer sulphides) through nietamorphie replacement (interpillow/interbrec- cia sulphides) to jiydrothermal dissolution and redeposition (vein-type sulphides)."

The Pt and Pd occur alloyed with copper in small, irregularly-shaped grains, 0.25-5.0 micrometers in maximum dimensions. Grains of unalloyed native copper are also present. The grains are completely surrounded by or marginal to magnetite with inclusions of Ni-Fe-Co sulphides and native Ni-Fe, which is apparently a product of the serpentinisation process. Crystallisation of the Pt-Pd-enriched copper probably occurred at the same time, at low temperature, but the previous form of the Pt and Pd is unknown as no earlier PGE phases have been found. While Pt and Pd minerals are usually important in early-magmatic base-metal sulphides, Pt alloyed with Cu is extremely rare and apparently occurs only very late in the paragenetic sequence. A Cu alloy with Pd dominant over Pt and only minor amounts of other elements appears not to have been reported

The study included lode zones at Wheal Pendarves, South Crofty and Rosevale tin mines. Fluid inclusion-containing microfractures are a common feature of the granites and typically show a preferred orientation over quite a large area. The close proximity of a dominant vein or fault controls their density and orientation. They are important pathways for fluids and provide a marker for palaeo-fluid flow. Overprinting provides a reliable representation of the evolution of the hydrothermal fluids in a vein system from early magmatic fluids to late-stage meteoric and basinal brine input. Measurement of microfracture orientation allows estimation of the regional stress regime during a specific hydrothermal event. Since micro- and macro-structures can generally be reliably correlated, these studies assist in modelling the detailed development of complex vein systems. Microfracture density is a good measure of palaeo-permeability, with implications for control of wallrock alteration. The determination of the location and density of microfractures can assist the mine geologist in identifying the location of potentially economic vein structures where macroscopic markers are absent

Among the various theories proposed to account for the spontaneous ignjtion of coal, one which has at times been very strongly held is that the initial heating is due to the oxidation of iron pyrites. From the results described in this paper, it is possible to calculate roughly the rate of spontaneous heating of a specimen of finely-divided pyrites, on the assumption that all the heat developed is used in raising the temperature of the pyrites, and that none is lost. It is clear that where finely-divided pyrites occurs in considerable proportion among coal, it may be the chief factor in originating combustion, but that pyrites can only be the cause of a heating when it is present in considerable proportion, and in a very finely-divided state

The kinetics of the copper segregation process has been investigated. The experimental strategy used to isolate the rate-controlling reaction step is described. This step was found to be the chloridisation of the oxide copper minerals in the ore. The link between the rate of chloridisation and the overall rate of segregation is demonstrated experimentally. The influence on the kinetics of the various parameters in a TORCO system is examined and the implications are discussed

Two of the most important economies in coal-washing are in the actual washing of the coal and in a proper lay-out to reduce to a minimum the cost of labour for handling and washing. A guarantee is usually required for turning out a washed coal containing not more than 2% of free dirt and a resulting refuse with not more than 2% of free coal; any plant that gives results within such guarantees can he considered economical, provided that there are no other losses during the washing process. Various drainage arrangements and washery lay-outs are illustrated and discussed with respect to drainage, bunkers, sieves, settling tanks and conveyors and two further points considered: siding accommodation, which may become quite important with washeries of large capacity especially when the coal is brought in railway-wagons; and the irregularity with which the coal arrives.
